Female Spalangia cameroni produced more offspring from younger house fly pupae, both when given a choice of host ages and when not given a choice. Host age did not affect offspring survivorship. Offspring were larger when they had developed on younger hosts and the effect was independent of offspring sex. Having previously parasitized old hosts versus young hosts did not reduce a female's production of offspring in subsequent hosts. Females distinguished between young and old hosts both in the light and in the dark. Females did not distinguish between host ages prior to physical contact with the host but could distinguish by the time they first began exploring a host by tapping it with their antennae; thus, they could distinguish before drilling into a host.  相似文献

Maritime ringlet butterflies (Coenonympha nipisiquit McDunnough), an endangered species in Canada, inhabit salt marshes, which consist of microhabitat mosaics with varied larval survival rate. These microhabitats may influence the movement and reproductive behaviors of females, which in turn may affect population dynamics. I recorded behaviors and locations of females every minute with a GPS rover and calculated their move lengths and turning angles. Move lengths did not change in response to microhabitats, although turning angles became larger near bodies of water with sparse vegetation. Females spent a longer time in one location and oviposited more often where the principal larval host, Spartina patens (Aiton) Muhl., is abundant, regardless of larval survival rate. Older females tended to initiate flight more readily than younger females and spent more time flying and nectaring. Younger females were more fecund and spent a longer time at one location. Because young females tend to be less mobile and more fecund, the majority of oviposition should take place near eclosion sites. However, some eggs will be laid away from microhabitats favorable to larval survival when older females become mobile and move out of their natal microhabitats. Because it seems to have little potential to colonize new habitat on its own, monitoring population dynamics and habitat quality will be crucial for the persistence and recovery of this rare species.  相似文献

Effects of learning in two microhabitat specialists, Leptopilina boulardia Barbotin et al. and L. fimbriata Kieffer were compared to previous and new results of learning in the microhabitat generalist L. heterotoma Thomson. Females were given one or more oviposition experiences on hosts in different types of substrate. In all species oviposition experience affected the choice for a substrate, although this effect of learning was considerably less in L. fimbriata compared to the other two species. Patch times, known to be highly determined by experience in the generalist L. heterotoma, were much less flexible in the specialists. L. boulardi and L. fimbriata have fixed patch times on their natural substrate and have variable patch times on other substrates only. In all three species one oviposition affected the choice for a substrate. Additional ovipositions showed no different effect. An accumulative effect of the number of ovipositions on patch times was found in L. heterotoma only. Retention of the learning effect was only studied in L. boulardi, and was shown to be similar to that reported for L. heterotoma, i.e. two to three days. Although learning was found in both the generalist and the specialist species studied, it seems to affect their foraging behaviour differently.  相似文献

Females of the polyphagous, ectoparasitoid, Exeristes roborator (F.) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), learned an olfactory stimulus associated with an artificial host microhabitat in the laboratory. In a two-choice olfactometer, females previously given hosts only in association with one stimulus showed a greater tendency to visit exclusively, and spend time in, chambers containing a source of that stimulus, than control females. Learning of olfactory cues could act in conjunction with learning of visual cues to allow the parasitoid to identify accurately microhabitats that experience has taught it contain hosts. It could also allow the parasitoid to identify these resources when visual cues are not available.
Résumé Nous avons supposé que les femelles polyphages de l'ichneumonide ectoparasite, E. roborator (F.), pourraient apprendre les stimuli olfactifs liés au microhabitat artificiel dans lequel elles avaient attaqué leur hôte. 4 lots de femelles ont été placés dans des conditions différentes: le microhabitat des hôtes du premier lot était du Parafilm imprégné d'odeur de pomme; celui des hôtes du second était un Parafilm non traité. Les hôtes des lots témoins 3 et 4 étaient présentés respectivement avec les deux microhabitats et sans aucun microhabitat. Placées dans un olfactomètre statique contenant du Parafilm traité à la pomme et du Parafilm vierge, des femelles du lot 1 ont eu tendance à ne visiter que l'enceinte contenant du Parafilm traité à la pomme, elles ont passé environ 75% de leur temps dans cette enceinte. A l'opposé, les femelles des 3 autres lots ont eu tendance à ne visiter que l'enceinte sans odeur de pomme, et elles n'ont passé que 34 à 46% de leur temps dans l'enceinte traitée à la pomme. Les différences entre les réactions du lot 1 et des autres lots sont significatives, mais entre les lots 2, 3 et 4, elles ne le sont pas. Une expérience témoin confirme que les préférences des femelles du lot 1 ne sont pas innées; E. roborator a donc appris à reconnaitre les stimuli olfactifs du microhabitat sentant la pomme. L'apprentissage des signaux olfactifs liés au microhabitat de l'hôte pourrait s'effectuer seul ou en relation avec l'apprentissage de signaux visuels permettant au parasitoïde d'identifier avec précision les microhabitats d'un hôte convenable.

Microhabitat use in a mediterranean riverine fish assemblage   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Summary We examined microhabitat use in Barbus graellsii, Barbus haasi, Chondrostoma toxostoma, Rutilus arcasii, and Salmo gairdneri over a 19 month period in the upper Rio Matarraña, Spain. B. graellsii and Ch. toxostoma exhibited non-random microhabitat use during all seasons and preferentially occupied deep microhabitats with heterogeneous substrates. During the majority of seasons in which they were present, B. haasi and R. arcasii occurred in microhabitats similar to those occupied by B. graellsii and Ch. toxostoma. S. gairdneri was over-represented in high velocity microhabitats with erosional substrates. We did not observe any evidence of interspecific interference competition or avoidance. Substrate composition did not appear to affect microhabitat use outside of its covariation with depth and velocity. Seaonal variation in microhabitat use by B. graellsii, B. haasi and Ch. toxostoma was strongly correlated with seasonal changes in microhabitat availability. S. gairdneri, however, occurred closer to the substrate when average velocities were high. Larger B. graellsii and B. haasi sometimes occupied deeper, higher velocity microhabitats than did smaller specimens. Larger B. graellsii also occasionally occurred farther from shelter than did smaller specimens; the reverse was true for B. haasi. Larger Ch. toxostoma sometimes were found farther from both the substrate and shelter than smaller individuals, whereas smaller specimens occasionally inhabited deeper areas with more depositional substrates than did larger Ch. toxostoma. During Late Summer 1985, smaller Ch. toxostoma also occupied microhabitats with higher velocities than did larger specimens. A comparison of microhabitat use for two species present in both upper and lower portions of the Matarraña indicated that most differences in microhabitat use could be attributed to inter-site differences in microhabitat availability. The data suggest, hovever, that both species shifted to more protected microhabitats in the higher velocity site. Assemblage members generally occupied statistically distinguishable microhabitats and could be classified as: 1) high-velocity upper water column (S. gairdneri), 2) low velocity lower water column (B. graellsii, Ch. toxostoma and R. arcasii), and 3) shelter-oriented benthic (B. haasi). The introduction of S. gairdneri during Winter 1984 did not produce microhabitat shifts in any of the native species. Whether or not the native species affected microhabitat use in S. gairdneri is unknown. Interspecific competition for space, however, did not appear to strongly influence microhabitat use among the native species.  相似文献

Understanding processes affecting the distribution and abundance of organisms is a central issue in ecology and conservation biology. In northwestern Madagascar, we found an uneven distribution pattern of the golden-brown mouse lemur (Microcebus ravelobensis) and the grey mouse lemur (M. murinus). In one area (JBA) the two species lived sympatrically, whereas in another forest area (JBB) Microcebus ravelobensis occurred exclusively. To investigate whether differences in forest structure may explain this uneven distribution, we conducted a microhabitat analysis and related it to specific distribution. In JBA the habitat of Microcebus ravelobensis was characterized by a higher percentage of trees with many lianas and a higher cover of the herb layer, whereas that of M. murinus had a higher number of trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) >10 cm. The comparison of the forest structure of the microhabitats of the two species between JBA and JBB revealed further differences. The cover of the overstory, the percentage of trees without lianas and the number of larger trees (DBH >10 cm) among the microhabitats were higher for Microcebus murinus in JBA than for M. ravelobensis in JBB whereas the microhabitats of M. ravelobensis at the two sites did not differ concerning these vegetation structures. Differences between the two species coincide with those of resources important for survival. Our results indicate the importance of microhabitat analyses for the understanding of distribution patterns of species and for successful conservation planning.  相似文献

The ability to learn plant volatiles in Cotesia kariyai females was examined by wind tunnel bioassays. Searching experience on a host-infested corn plant increased subsequent flight responses of females to the infested plant. Females experiencing host by-products together with the volatiles extracted from infested leaves one time showed an increased response. However, such behavioral changes were not observed in females which experienced only the host by-products or the volatiles. Thus, the increased response is considered to be preference learning. Multiple experiences of C. kariyai with host by-products together with the volatiles did not increase their flight response to the volatiles. Furthermore, this learned response gradually decreased within 2 days. These behavioral modifications based on experience would be advantageous for C. kariyai to locate their polyphagous hosts efficiently.  相似文献

Summary Non-specificity of part of the sex pheromone system of three species of reptile tick has previously been suggested to result in reproductive interference between the species when they attach to the same host (Andrews et al. 1982). Two of the species, Aponomma hydrosauri and Amblyomma limbatum, have common aggregation pheromones which act when the ticks are detached from their hosts. As each species tends to occupy spatially separated microhabitats, the similarity of the aggregation pheromone could lead to interference between species when off their hosts by inducing one species to move away from its preferred microhabitat into that occupied by the other species. This study demonstrates that coaggregations of both species do occur, but that neither species shows a statistically significant shift in microhabitat preference attributable to interactions between species. We suggest that the behaviours leading to microhabitat choice in each species override the influence of the common aggregation pheromone.  相似文献

The solitary parasitoids Aphidius erviHaliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and Aphelinus asychisWalker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) attacked but generally did not oviposit in pea aphids parasitized by the other species. Wasps selectively oviposited in unparasitized hosts when given a choice. Host discrimination depended on the recognition of internal cues. Females of A. asychiseither could not recognize or ignored A. ervi'sexternal host marking pheromone. Under most conditions, A. ervisurvived in superparasitized hosts, killing competing A. asychislarvae by physical attack and possibly physiological suppression. The outcome of larval competition was not affected by oviposition sequence or age difference between larvae; A. asychissurvived only when it had substantially completed larval development before the host was superparasitized by A. ervi.It is suggested that competition for host resources incurs a cost, for the winner in terms of reduced size or increased development time and for the loser in terms of lost progeny and searching time. Consequently, heterospecific host discrimination can be functional. Internal, and probably general, cues enable wasps to recognize and avoid oviposition in hosts already parasitized by an unrelated species.  相似文献

The host-foraging behavior of female entomophagous parasitoids is commonly modified by positive associative learning. Typically, a rewarding experience (e.g., successful oviposition in a host) increases a female's foraging effort in a host microhabitat of the type associated with that experience. Less well understood are the effects of unrewarding experiences (i.e., unsuccessful foraging). The influence of unrewarding experience on microhabitat choice and residence time within a microhabitat was examined for the eucoilid parasitoid,Leptopilina heterotoma, in laboratory and greenhouse assays. As determined previously, females which oviposited successfully in either of two microhabitat types (fermenting apple or decaying mushroom) strongly preferred to forage subsequently on that microhabitat type. However, failure to find hosts in the formerly rewarding microhabitat caused females to reverse their preference in favor of a novel microhabitat type. The effect, though striking, was transient: within 1–2 h, the original learned preference was nearly fully restored. Similar effects of unrewarding experiences were observed with respect to the length of time spent foraging in a microhabitat. As determined previously, oviposition experience in a particular microhabitat type increased the time spent foraging in a patch of that microhabitat type. However, failure to find hosts in the patch caused the time a wasp spent in the next unoccupied patch of that type to decrease to almost nothing. In addition, there was a tendency for an unrewarding experience on a formerly rewarding microhabitat type to extend the time spent in a patch of a novel type. The function of the observed effects of unrewarding experiences is discussed.  相似文献

Shallow lakes can occur in two alternative stable states, a clear-water state and a turbid state. This is associated with separate assemblages of fish, zooplankton and plants. Little is known about whether macroinvertebrate assemblages differ across both stable states. This study investigated this in a connected set of three turbid and three clear-water shallow lakes. To overcome confounding effects of differences in spatial structure of macrophytes in turbid and clear-water lakes, we sampled three microhabitats that occurred in both alternative stable states: open water, sago pondweed (Potamogeton pectinatus) and reed (Phragmites australis). Univariate analyses indicated no differences in the number of organisms, taxon richness or diversity between turbid and clear-water lakes. Multivariate analysis, however, showed significant differences in the macroinvertebrate community structure of both stable states. Nine taxa explained a significant amount of the variation between both lake types, of which seven preferred the clear-water lakes. The number of organisms and the taxon richness were higher in reed than in the other microhabitats, but diversity and evenness did not differ among the microhabitats. Multivariate analyses could separate all three microhabitats. Eight taxa, mainly detritus feeders and collector–gatherers, explained most of the variation in the data and preferred the reed microhabitat. The effects of stable state (6.8% explained variance) and microhabitat (13.1% explained variance) on the macroinvertebrate assemblages were largely independent from each other (1.5% shared variance). Although macroinvertebrates are not implemented in the initial theory of stable states, our results show clearly different assemblages across both stable states.  相似文献

The patterns of microhabitat use were investigated in three coexisting epizoic algae on an intertidal gastropod, Lunella correensis in an attempt to enhance understanding of the niche relations among ecologically similar species in a space-limited environment. Our analysis of field-derived data showed clear spatiotemporal partitioning of shell microhabitats by epizoic algae with different degrees of resource specialization. As a substrate-specializing, obligate epizoic alga, Pseudocladophora conchopheria occupied wider micro-niches on the host of different sizes than facultative epizoic algae (encrusting rhodophytes, crustose Corallina and Gelidium). While Pseudocladophora demonstrated uniform use of all shell microhabitats on hosts of all sizes, crustose Corallina and Gelidium showed more varied microhabitat use with shifting positions on hosts of different sizes. Furthermore, in addition to slight differences in microhabitat use, crustose Corallina and Gelidium demonstrated differences in their interspecific relationship with Pseudocladophora. Our generalized linear models (GLM) analyses indicated that the occurrence/abundance of crustose Corallina was negatively affected by Pseudocladophora but that of Gelidium was positively affected, while Pseudocladophora appeared to be competitively inferior to both rhodophytes when they co-occurred on hosts of relatively large sizes. The present study, therefore, points to variable niche partitioning among algae even on a small spatial scale, which may result from complex interactions between spatio-temporal substrate heterogeneity on a live host and interspecific interactions.  相似文献

Olfactory responses of parasitoids can be variable. This was shown by olfactometer experiments with females of two sibling Asobara species, larval endoparasitoids of Drosophilidae. Oviposition experiences of adult female parasitoids significantly altered their behavioural responses in microhabitat and host location. Females needed prior exposure to a host before they were capable of using volatile compounds related to the presence of their host. Asobara tabida (Nees) attacks Drosophila in fermenting fruits and A. rufescens (Foerster) attacks Drosophilidae in decaying plant materials. Naïve females show a strong preference for the odour of their own microhabitat. After experience with their own host and microhabitat, females were repelled by odours of the other microhabitat. Enforced experience with this repellent microhabitat in the laboratory modified the olfactory response from repellency to attraction. It was shown that even the microhabitat odour preference pattern could be changed through experience. This kind of behavioural flexibility may be the rule rather than the exception in many other Hymenopterous parasitoids.  相似文献

The frosted elfin (Callophrys irus) is a localized and declining butterfly found in xeric open habitats maintained by disturbance. We described the effects of woody plant canopy cover, topography and host plant size and density on the quality of microhabitat of wild indigo (Baptisia tinctoria) host plants containing late instar frosted elfin larvae at four study sites in southeastern Massachusetts, United States. We also assessed whether females preferentially depositing eggs on host plants within specific microhabitats, therefore conferring greater survivorship to the larvae through the late-instar stage. We found that moderate amounts of canopy cover and large plant size characterized larvae-occupied host plants. In the absence of tree canopy cover, late instar larvae density remained low even when host plant density was high. However, females oviposited on wild indigo plants without regard to any of the vegetative or environmental variables we measured. These results indicate that canopy cover was an important characteristic of microhabitats containing late instar larvae, and late instar larvae occupancy was determined by suitable microhabitat conditions, and not female oviposition selection. Managing for canopy cover and microhabitat heterogeneity within relatively open habitats is recommended for the maintenance of frosted elfin populations.  相似文献

Summary Two laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the ovipositional preferences of the egg parasitoidOoencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) for parasitized and unparasitizedMegacopta punctatissimum Montandon (Hemiptera: Plataspidae). Females that had never oviposited or that had not oviposite for 3 days preferred recently parasitized hosts more than unparasitized hosts. The preference for recently parasitized hosts appeared to be mediated by the punctures in already parasitized hosts made by the ovipositor of the first female. Survival of the parasitoid progeny was lower in recently parasitized hosts than in unparasitized hosts. However, handling time of parasitized hosts was extremely short relative to that of unparasitized hosts, because the superparasitizing female could use the punctures made by the previous females. It is concluded that the females preferred the parasitized hosts over unparasitized hosts because the benefit of saving time and energy for drilling was more than the cost of progeny survival.  相似文献

We used foraging trays to compare how oldfield mice, Peromyscus polionotus, altered foraging in response to the presence of fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, and in the presence of direct (predator urine) and indirect (sheltered or exposed microhabitat, moonlight, and precipitation) indicators of predation risk. Foraging reductions elicited by S. invicta were greater than reductions in response to well-documented indicators of risk (i.e., moonlit nights) and the presence of predator urine. The presence of S. invicta always led to reduced foraging, but the overall impact of S. invicta was dependent upon microhabitat and precipitation. When S. invicta was not present, foraging was greater in sheltered microhabitats compared to exposed microhabitats. S. invicta made sheltered microhabitats equivalent to more risky exposed microhabitats, and this effect was especially pronounced on nights without precipitation. The effect of S. invicta suggests that interactions with S. invicta may entail a potentially heavy cost or that presence of S. invicta may represent a more reliable indicator of imminent competition or predation compared to indirect cues of risk and predator urine. The presence of S. invicta led to reduced foraging under situations when foraging activity would otherwise be greatest (i.e., under vegetative cover), potentially reducing habitat quality for P. polionotus and the distribution of seeds consumed by rodents.  相似文献

Females of the larval parasitoidCotesia glomerata (L.) use plant-associated cues to locate their lepidopteran host,Pieris rapae L. In this study we investigated the influence of four host plant species,Brassica oleracea var.acephala (‘Vates’ kale),Tropaeolum majus (nasturtium),Lunaria annua (honesty), andCleome spinosa (spider flower), on two components of the host selection process inC. glomerata, namely, attraction and host acceptance. Choice tests in a flight tunnel showed that parasitoids were attracted to some host plant species more than to others in the absence of host larvae.B. oleracea was the most attractive plant species, followed byL. annua, T. majus, andC. spinosa. In previous studies it was shown thatB. oleracea carries highly suitable hosts forC. glomerata and that, in the field, parasitization rates on this plant were the highest. When host larvae were reared on the four host plant species and then transferred to a common substrate (B. oleracea var.capitata, cabbage), plant species that had served as diet for the hosts did not have a significant effect on acceptance for parasitization. Thus, parasitoids were attracted to host plant species differentially, but they did not discriminate among host larvae based on the dietary history of their hosts. ForC. glomerata, it appears that phytochemistry mediates host selection more by influencing parasitoid attraction than it does by affecting host acceptance.  相似文献

  • 1 Three aspects of prey utilization are documented in a guild of spider-hunting pompilid wasps at a Breckland heath site: female phenology, size, and microhabitat utilization.
  • 2 Twenty-four species were present at the site, 59% of the British fauna. Ten species individually represented more than 1% of the guild.
  • 3 Pompilid abundance peaked in early July and mid-late August. Anoplius viaticus had a different life-history from other common guild members, making its inclusion in the guild questionable.
  • 4 Most species represented by large samples occurred in all microhabitats and time intervals, and all species overlapped in size with all other species except A. viaticus. Arachnospila anceps was numerically dominant in all microhabitats and most time intervals.
  • 5 Mean pair-wise overlaps in phenology and microhabitat utilization were significantly lower than predicted by null models, consistent with the idea that interspecific competition has been important in determining guild structure.
  • 6 Female size is highly correlated with prey size, but the distribution of mean female sizes did not generally differ from null expectations.
  • 7 Interpretation of comparisons with null models is problematic, particularly because it is difficult to quantify evolutionary ‘favourability’ of different resource states. Null models are currently of limited use because the patterns expected to result from key processes such as competition are uncertain in multi-dimensional systems.
