The major ribosomal DNA (rDNA) loci were localized on meiotic and mitotic chromosomes and in interphase nuclei of 18 ground-beetle species belonging to three tribes of the supertribe Carabitae by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), using a PCR-amplified 18S rDNA as a probe. Meiotic observations indicate that the 18S rDNA sequences are located on the largest autosomal bivalent in 12 species of Carabus , two species of Calosoma (both genera belonging to the tribe Carabini), and three sibling species of Ceroglossus chilensis (tribe Ceroglossini). The data suggest the occurrence of a conservative pattern in these three genera despite the chromosomal rearrangements that have led to karyotypes with higher chromosome numbers in Ceroglossus . A different result is found in Cychrus caraboides (tribe Cychrini), where ribosomal cistrons are located in two medium-sized autosomal pairs. Further species of Cychrini should be studied for corroborating the occurrence of molecular and karyotypical apomorphies in Cychrus with regard to the genera Carabus, Calosoma and Ceroglossus .  相似文献

A review of the ground beetles of the Ukrainian fauna is given. Almost 750 species from 117 genera of Carabidae are known to occur in the Ukraine. Approximately 450 species of ground beetles are registered in the Carpathian region. No less than 300 species of ground beetles are found in the forest zone. Approximately 400 species of Carabidae present in the forest-steppe zone are relatively similar in species composition to those in the forest territories. Some 450 species of Carabidae are inhabitants of the steppe zone. Representatives of many other regions of heterogeneous biotopes such as forest, semi desert, intrazonal, etc. can be found in the steppe areas. The fauna of Carabidae (ca. 100 species) of the lowlands of southern Ukraine (sandy biotopes), situated mostly in the Kherson region, is very peculiar. The fauna of the Crimean mountains contains about 300 species. Conservation measures for the Carabidae are discussed.  相似文献

The chromosomes of four species of Australian tiger beetle are documented. The male meioformulae of three species of Cicindela (tribe Cicindelini) were determined as follow: Cicindela cardinalba Sumlin 1987, n = 10 + X1 X2 X3Y; C. sp. ( saetigera group) and Cicindela gillesensis Hudson 1994, n = 11 + X1 X2 X3Y. The male meioformula of Megacephala whelani Sumlin 1992 (tribe Megacephalini) is n = 12 + XY. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to localize the 18S-28S ribosomal gene clusters on male mitotic and meiotic chromosomes and nuclei using a polymerase chain reaction-amplified ribosomal probe. Fluorescence in mitosis and meiotic first prophase stages in the three Cicindela species showed that rDNA genes are in two of the four chromosomes that form the sex vesicle. In M. whelani hybridization in mitosis and first metaphase stages indicate that rDNA genes are in three, medium- to small-sized, autosomal pairs. Silver staining of male meiotic nuclei reveals the presence of active nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) in the sex vesicle of the three species of Cicindela . The cytogenetic and evolutionary implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of the West Mediterranean lineages of the subtribe Scaritina have been investigated by studying the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase gene (COI) and the mitotic and meiotic chromosomes, including the localization of rDNA genes by fluorescence in situ hybridization. These sources of data are congruent and suggest the following conclusions: (1) the subgenus Parallelomorphus (genus Scarites ) is a monophyletic group according to molecular and karyotypic data, in agreement with its geographical distribution and morphological characters; (2) in the same genus, the subgenus Scallophorites seems to be monophyletic but includes two well-separated lineages – one represented by Scarites buparius (Forster, 1771) and Scarites occidentalis (Bedel, 1895) (both with multiple sex chromosomes), and one represented by Scarites hespericus (Dejean, 1831); (3) the nominal subgenus Scarites s.s . represented by Scarites eurytus (Fischer, 1828), is cladistically more closely related to subgenus Scallophorites than to subgenus Parallelomorphus ; (4) Distichus planus (Bonelli, 1813) belongs to a distinct clade that is well separated from Scarites, and shows more plesiomorphic states of COI sequence and chromosome number. In addition, the presence of two autapomorphies, such as rDNA sites located in the X chromosome, and an A + T rich intergenic spacer of about 120 bp between the stop codon of the COI gene and the tRNAleu, agree with the ranking of Distichus as a separate genus from Scarites .  相似文献

We characterized five microsatellite loci from Abax parallelepipedus, one of the most common forest ground beetles in central Europe. The polymorphism of the loci was assessed in 30 individuals from one population. The number of alleles ranged between two and 19 and the observed heterozygosities between 0.10 and 0.97. No deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium were detected for any of the markers.  相似文献

Cicindela littoralis and Cicindela flexuosa were analysed at population level to determine the localization and activity of ribosomal genes. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), using a PCR‐amplified 18S rDNA fragment as a probe, revealed the presence of polymorphism regarding the number of chromosomes with ribosomal genes as well as their localization within the genome. Nine populations of C. littoralis showed a consistent pattern of two loci located in an autosomal pair (active during spermatogenesis as shown by silver staining) and one locus located in one of the multiple X chromosomes (silent during spermatogenesis), whereas individuals from the population of Punta Entinas showed only signals in the autosomal pair, lacking the heterosomal locus. In C. flexuosa, two patterns were also observed. Nine populations showed two loci in an autosomal pair whereas individuals from the population of San Pedro del Pinatar showed the two loci located in the heterosomes (one of the multiple Xs and in the Y). The hypothesis that these two different populations may reflect a status of well‐differentiated phylogenetic entities is not supported for C. littoralis after the phylogenetic analysis of a fragment of the cytochrome oxidase I gene.  相似文献

Dalyat mirabilis Mateu 2002 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) is a cave species recently described from SE Spain, which, based on morphological analyses, has been related to the Promecognathinae (with one genus in western North America and four genera in South Africa). In this paper, we investigated the phylogenetic relationships of the main lineages of family Carabidae, and the placement of Dalyat among them, with the 18S rRNA full sequence and a fragment of wingless with the use of parsimony, a fast maximum likelihood algorithm (implemented in the program phyml ), and Bayesian posterior probabilities. Although with wingless alone the relationships of Dalyat were not robustly supported, both with 18S rRNA and in a combined analysis there was a strong support for a sister relationship between Promecognathus and Dalyat with the three methods used. Using a molecular-clock approach the two lineages were estimated to have diverged at a similar (or slightly earlier) age than the origin of Harpalinae, known to have radiated in the Cretaceous. This is compatible with a vicariant origin of the lineage leading to Dalyat because of the isolation of the Iberian plate from Pangea in the late Jurassic to early Cretaceous. Other robust relationships within the Carabidae are the monophyly of Harpalinae (including Morionini, Peleciini and Pseudomorphini), its sister relationship with Brachininae, and the inclusion of these two subfamilies together with Scaritini and the austral Psydrinae in a strongly supported clade (the 'higher' Carabidae).  相似文献

Non-specfic carboxylesterase and glutathione S-transferase activity was measured in the ground beetle, Pterosthicus oblongopunctatus (Coleoptera: Carabidae), from five sites along a gradient of heavy metal pollution. A previous study determined that beetles from the two most polluted sites (site codes OLK2 and OLK3) were more susceptible to additional stressors compared with beetles from the reference site (Stone et al., Environ. Pollut. 113, 239-244 2001), suggesting the possibility of physiological impairment. Metal body burdens in ground beetles from five sites along the gradient ranged from 79 to 201 microg/g Zn, 0.174 to 8.66 microg/g Pb and 1.14 to 10.8 microg/g Cd, whereas Cu seemed to be efficiently regulated regardless of metal levels in the soil. Beetle mid- and hindguts were homogenized and the soluble fraction containing glutathione S-transferase (GST) and carboxylesterase (CaE) was assayed using kinetic analyses. Significantly higher levels of GST were found only in female beetles from the most polluted sites (OLK2 and OLK3; P=0.049, P<0.001, respectively) compared with the reference site (OLK7). In addition, OLK3 females had significantly higher levels of CaE compared with the reference beetles (P=0.01). Male beetles did not differ in enzyme activity along the metal gradient. Overall, obvious trends in detoxification enzymes were not detected in ground beetles in association with metal body burdens.  相似文献

Five microsatellite loci were isolated from the Galápagos caterpillar hunter Calosoma granatense. Polymorphism ranges from four to 14 alleles, and observed and expected heterozygosities range from 0.138 to 0.889 and 0.197–0.902, respectively. Cross‐amplification of the developed primers was successful in the related species C. leleuporum.  相似文献

Aims and methods Ground beetle and satellite‐derived land cover data from 1687 United Kingdom 10 km national grid squares were used to assess the relationship between species pool and cover data in Great Britain using fuzzy classification and constrained ordination. Results Ground beetle species pools classified into nine groups which were related to land cover variables using constrained ordination. There was a strong relationship between upland land cover and three ground beetle groups. Deciduous woodland, coastal and tilled land were associated with three other groups. Three further groups did not appear to be strongly associated with any particular cover, but differed in geographical position. Conclusion The distribution of species pools derived from the British national recording scheme at the 10 km scale was strongly related to satellite‐derived land cover data. There appears to be considerable potential for the use of a synthesis of land cover and ground beetle data in the monitoring of environmental change over a large, countrywide, area.  相似文献

The advent of GIS technology and the World Wide Web, respectively, facilitate analysing geographical relationships and electronically storing and exchanging biogeographic data. This paper illustrates GIS technology with a study of the subgenus Anisodactylus Dejean (Insecta: Coleoptera: Carabidae: genus Anisodactylus). Species are concentrated in three centres of biodiversity in North America and in four in lands near the western Mediterranean. These centres largely correspond to current areas of wetlands. Eurasia has fewer species than expected based on its area, probably because large portions have habitats unfavourable for the subgenus and/or are poorly collected for Carabidae. Members of the subgenus are primarily adapted to areas with January temperatures between ?10 and 10 °C, July temperatures from 10 to 30 °C and mean annual precipitation from 20 to 200 mm. Cold is apparently a major limiting factor because it typically occurs during several consecutive months of winter and is difficult to escape except by hibernation. Heat is less of a stress when moisture is sufficient. The size of geographical ranges is often larger in the North than in the South and correlates with the latitude of the centre of ranges at r =0.42 (level of significance=0.05). Geographic ranges are often smaller in western North America and in the western Mediterranean than elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Explanations for the smaller sizes include portions of western North America having unfavourable desert or montane habitats, the Rocky Mountains and deserts barring eastward dispersal of species, and the smaller size and more patchy distribution of climatic zones and habitats. In North America geographical ranges west of the Rocky Mountains are north–south elongated because they track primarily north–south orientated climatic zones and because mountains and deserts bar eastward extension. Ranges in north-eastern and north-central North America tend to extend east–west along temperature isotherms. In Eurasia many ranges are stretched east–west because of the shape of the continent and because many northern and southern areas lack suitable habitats. Species with relatively high numbers of apomorphic character states cluster in western Eurasia and to a lesser extent in western North America. The North American centres of biodiversity are post-Wisconsin phenomena while those near the western Mediterranean probably date from the Oligocene or Miocene.  相似文献

External and internal thoracic structures of two carabid species (Trechini) were examined and documented with different techniques. The study has a main focus on the eyeless cave-dwelling specialist Sinaphaenops wangorum, but detailed information is also provided for a species occurring in cave entrances. The phylogenetic background of the structural features of the thoracic skeletomuscular system was addressed. The thoracic morphology of the examined species was compared to conditions observed in previously studied carabids and non-related subterranean leiodids (Staphylinoidea) in order to identify cave adaptations. Main thoracic character complexes linked with cavernicolous habits in Trechini are elongation of the pro- and mesothorax and the legs, and a complete and irreversible reduction of the flight apparatus. The lost flight capacity is linked with a far reaching modification of skeletal elements of the metathorax including a strongly shortened and simplified metanotum, a shortened metaventrite, and completely reduced wings and sclerites of the wing base. The elongate prothorax together with the long and slender head and elongated legs distinctly increases the activity range in the subterranean lightless environment, which likely facilitates foraging of the carnivorous beetles. Some of the observed features like wing loss and elongation of the anterior thorax and legs are also found in some cave-dwelling Leiodidae (Leptodirini), whereas some other subterranean members of the staphylinoid family have a compact body and legs of normal length. In contrast to the predaceous Trechini, Leptodirini are scavengers.  相似文献

The tribe Harpalini is a group of ground beetles with a world-wide distribution that comprises approximately 2000 species and about 238 genera and subgenera. Hypotheses about the phylogenetic relationships of the subtribes of Harpalini are implicit within the systematic criteria put forward by different authors. A 759 bp fragment of the mitochondrial COI was sequenced in 119 specimens (107 species) of 52 genera and subgenera that represent the main lineages of Harpalines, and 3 species of other tribes used as outgroups. A hierarchical study of sequence divergence (under uncorrected and corrected models) and ts:tv ratio pattern analyses were carried out at different taxonomic levels. A low saturation rate was detected at first and second codon positions, whereas A+T richness causes a low transitions:transversions ratio, which suggests--a priori--a high rate of saturation at the third codon position. A progressive accumulation of sequence divergence and a decreasing ts:tv ratio were found from lower to higher taxonomic levels. MP strict consensus, ML, and minimum evolution distance (under ts+tv and tv only schemes) trees showed similar major clades within the tribe. The subtribe Ditomina is a monophyletic lineage with close affinities to the subtribe Harpalina. Harpalina is a polyphyletic lineage as the genus Daptus is always related to members of the subtribe Stenolophina, and the Selenophorines resulted a polyphyletic group related to the subtribe Anisodactylina. Main lineages proposed by Noonan [Quaest. Entomol. 9 (1973) 266] within the subtribe Anisodactylina have been corroborated in this study. The Australian genus Phorticosomus is not related to Ditomina but to the Australian Notiobioids lineage. Most taxa of the subtribe Stenolophina are always included in the same clade, together with taxa of the subtribe Pelmatellina, which might be considered as a lineage of Stenolophina related to Bradycellus and Dicheirotrichus. The subtribe Amblystomina lacks a well-supported relationship to the other subtribes of Harpalini and could not be consistently related to any of them.  相似文献

Eucamaragnathus desenderisp. n., a new ground beetle species of the tribe Hiletini, is described from eastern and southern Africa and dedicated to the recently deceased Belgian carabidologist Konjev Desender. The new taxon is known so far from localities in Zambia (Mukuku, southeast of Mansa) and in South Africa (Bothaville, south of Klerksdorp). The new species belongs to the Eucamaragnathus castelnaui group and is characterized by shape of pronotum, smooth or sparsely punctate pronotal transverse impression, characters of male genitalia and elytral striae continued to the apex. Illustrations of the habitus, the median lobe and its internal sac and several other morphological features are presented. An updated identification key to the African Eucamaragnathus species is given.  相似文献

Increased interest in biomass harvesting for bioenergetic applications has raised questions regarding the potential ecological consequences on forest biodiversity. Here we evaluate the initial changes in the abundance, species richness and community composition of rove (Staphylinidae) and ground beetles (Carabidae), immediately following 1) stem-only harvesting (SOH), in which logging debris (i.e., tree tops and branches) are retained on site, and 2) whole-tree harvesting (WTH), in which stems, tops and branches are removed in mature balsam fir stands in Quebec, Canada. Beetles were collected throughout the summer of 2011, one year following harvesting, using pitfall traps. Overall catch rates were greater in uncut forest (Control) than either stem-only or whole-tree harvested sites. Catch rates in WTH were greater than SOH sites. Uncut stands were characterized primarily by five species: Atheta capsularis, Atheta klagesi, Atheta strigosula, Tachinus fumipennis/frigidus complex (Staphylinidae) and to a lesser extent to Pterostichus punctatissimus(Carabidae). Increased catch rates in WTH sites, where post-harvest biomass was less, were attributable to increased catches of rove beetles Pseudopsis subulata, Quedius labradorensis and to a lesser extent Gabrius brevipennis. We were able to characterize differences in beetle assemblages between harvested and non-harvested plots as well as differences between whole tree (WTH) and stem only (SOH) harvested sites where logging residues had been removed or left following harvest. However, the overall assemblage response was largely a recapitulation of the responses of several abundant species.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships of the Antiperyphanes Complex of the genus Bembidion are inferred using DNA sequences from seven genes (two nuclear ribosomal, four nuclear protein coding, and one mitochondrial protein coding). Redefined subgenera within the complex are each well-supported as monophyletic. Most striking was the discovery that a small set of morphologically and ecologically heterogeneous species formed a clade, here called subgenus Nothonepha. This unexpected result was corroborated by the discovery of deep pits in the lateral body wall (in the mesepisternum) of all Nothonepha, a trait unique within Bembidion. These pits are filled with a waxy substance in ethanol-preserved specimens. In one newly discovered species (Bembidion tetrapholeon sp. n., described here), these pits are so deep that their projections into the body cavity from the two sides touch each other internally. These structures in Bembidion (Nothonepha) are compared to very similar mesepisternal pits which have convergently evolved in two other groups of carabid beetles. The function of these thoracic pits is unknown. Most members of subgenus Nothonepha have in addition similar but smaller pits in the abdomen. A revised classification is proposed for the Antiperyphanes Complex.  相似文献
