Relationships among seven species of the Aedes scutellaris subgroup and four of the Aedes albopictus subgroup were determined using restriction fragment analysis of mtDNA. Considerable polymorphism was found among species, with an average proportion of 0.338 restriction fragments being shared among them. Fitch-Margoliash, Wagner parsimony and UPGMA analyses revealed that the phylogeny based on mtDNA was only partially congruent with that based on allozymes and morphology. All three analyses, however, suggested that three species pairs, A. flavopictus-A. pseudalbopictus, A. pseudoscutellaris-A. riversi, and A. albopictus-A. polynesiensis were monophyletic with regard to their mtDNA. The results indicated that although the species in the A. scutellaris and the A. albopictus subgroups do not exhibit significant morphological divergence, their mtDNA has diverged extensively.  相似文献

Beginning in the mid-1950s, much progress has been made in studying various aspects of the genetics of mosquitoes, particularly involving several species of three principal genera,Aedes, Culex andAnopheles, that transmit important human diseases. Here I discuss selected areas of research involving formal genetics; genome structure, organization and evolution at the interspecific and intraspecific level; and evolutionary genetics of theAedes scutellaris group. Information and insights gained from in-depth analyses of these areas, particularly transmission genetics, cytogenetics and genetics of chromosomal rearrangements, and of mutagen-induced sexual sterility, have proved invaluable for the development of the theory and evaluation of feasibility of genetic control of natural populations. As a result, mosquitoes represent some of the best studied taxa at various levels of genetic organization. Recent developments in molecular genetics offer exciting possibilities for extension of these concepts.  相似文献

The delphacid Megamelus scutellaris Berg was evaluated for host specificity and potential impact as part of a biological control program targeting Eichhornia. crassipes. Survival and development of adults and nymphs were used as metrics with no-choice, two-choice, nymph transfer, and sustainability tests conducted under quarantine conditions. A total of 69 plant species were tested including 12 from the Pontederiaceae (including E. crassipes). Additionally, 27 native and 5 exotic associated wetland species and 11 economic species were tested. Megamelus scutellaris exhibited a high level of oviposition and developmental fidelity to E. crassipes by failing to sustain populations on any non-target test plant past the F1 generation. Nymph transfer tests which simulated potential spill-over events found that survival was virtually non-existent on associated wetland plants, regardless of taxonomic relatedness, including on Pontederia cordata, an important and widespread native species. Eichhornia crassipes plants exposed to two consecutive generations of feeding produced 66.9% less biomass and 73.4% fewer leaves than those in the controls. We conclude that Megamelus scutellaris is safe to release on E. crassipes in the United States.  相似文献

Adults and larvae of Coproica lugubris and Chaetopodella scutellaris (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae) occur in great numbers on cow droppings. Courtship behaviour and copulation were analyzed and compared. Striking differences were found in the complexity and number of courtship patterns. In contrast to C. lugubris, where males usually mount females without performing any displays, courtship of Ch. scutellaris is rather complex: a male approaches a female and positions himself facing her; he then starts to circle her in a fashion very similar to a male courtship pattern in Drosophila species. Females usually respond to circling with a typical behaviour pattern I called swaying. Its function is discussed. The complex courtship behaviour of Ch. scutellaris is interpreted as a mechanism for female choice. In Ch. scutellaris copulation takes about 60 min longer than in C. lugubris, but the mechanism based upon this obvious difference is not understood. Females of both species can effectively prevent males from copulating.  相似文献

Ethological isolation among eight species of mosquitoes in the Aedes scutellaris subgroup of the south Pacific was investigated by offering females a simultaneous choice between males of their own species and males of another species. The degree of ethological isolation between these largely allopatric, island-dwelling mosquitoes was associated with time since the species had become geographically isolated by the fragmentation of the Outer Melanesian Arc 2–10 mya. The degree of ethological isolation between species pairs was observed to be significantly correlated with the degree of genetic isolation based on other published studies of allozyme variation and percentage egg hatch from interspecific hybridizations. However, ethological isolation was asymmetrical for some species pairs within the same island region. Asymmetrical isolation was especially prominent in Polynesia, where females of two older species discriminated against males of newer species, while females of the newer species failed to discriminate.  相似文献

The stridulatory organ of the Crematogaster scutellaris (Olivier 1792) workers is being described, comparing their pars stridens present in six nests of this species, with one nest of Crematogaster auberti Emery 1869 and with the bibliographical data regarding other neighbouring species at our disposal. Both species and some Crematogaster scutellaris nests have shown significant differences. We propose several hypotheses which could explain these differences.  相似文献

Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Delphacidae) and Taosa (Cuernavaca) longula Remes Lenicov (Dictyopharidae) are specialist planthoppers that feed and reproduce on the invasive aquatic weed, Eichhornia crassipes (Martius) Solms-Laubach (Pontederiaceae). They overlap geographically in several regions of South America and may, therefore, interact and compete for food and microhabitat. Preliminary observations indicated that both species do not feed on the same part of the plant. We hypothesized that they partition the resource; hence, we studied (1) the feeding mechanism at the tissue level and (2) the spatial distribution of both species on the water hyacinth plant. Salivary sheaths were detected through histological sections of plant tissues using light microscopy. The location of either planthopper species on the plant was recorded when in the presence or absence of the other species. Both species produced true salivary sheaths, mostly branched (M. scutellaris: 82%; T. longula: 84%), ending in phloem (M. scutellaris: 56%; T. longula: 52%), and xylem tissues (M. scutellaris: 24%; T. longula: 28%). They resided on different parts of the water hyacinth plant even when they did not coexist; nymphs of T. longula occurred primarily on the back side of the leaf laminas, while nymphs of M. scutellaris occupied the basal zone of the petioles. This study shows that these planthoppers complement each other and could be used in combination as control agents for water hyacinth. Further experimental studies and field observations are necessary to quantify interactions.  相似文献

1. Interspecific competition among ants is common, and so is competitive exclusion among dominant ant species. In contrast, specific associations between non‐parasitic ant species are rare, especially in the temperate zones. As an exception, the subordinate ant Camponotus lateralis frequently co‐occurs with the dominant Crematogaster scutellaris but rarely with other dominant ants. 2. This association is one of various associations between Camponotus and Crematogaster species across the world. However, the mechanisms behind these co‐occurences are largely unknown. 3. In the present study, we therefore investigated the association of Ca. lateralis and Cr. scutellaris. We studied the spatial association of the nests, interspecific aggression, both species' cuticular hydrocarbon profiles, and their propensity to follow the other species' pheromone trails. 4. Crematogaster scutellaris usually attacked and displaced the generally submissive Ca. lateralis, but was significantly less aggressive at jointly used trails. Camponotus nests were always in close proximity to Crematogaster nests. 5. The cuticular hydrocarbons of both species consisted of alkanes with chain lengths between C21 and C35. The two species had 25 hydrocarbons in common, including mono‐, di‐, and tetramethyl alkanes. Despite this qualitative similarity, however, the quantitative hydrocarbon composition differed between the two species. 6. Camponotus lateralis followed artificial trails containing trail pheromones of Cr. scutellaris, but the latter did not follow Ca. lateralis trail pheromones. Interspecific trail‐following by Camponotus, but not vice versa, has been observed in another Camponotus–Crematogaster association and may be a more general mechanism that facilitates associations between the two ant genera.  相似文献

Water hyacinth, Pontederia crassipes (Martius) [≡Eichhornia crassip es (Martius) Solms-Laubach] (Pontederiaceae), is native to South America, but has expanded its range to many other regions of the world including South Africa. Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) was released as a biological control agent and has established in several regions. Recently, the indigenous species Echthrodelphax migratorius Benoit, (Hymenoptera: Dryinidae) was discovered in South Africa parasitising M. scutellaris. This newly discovered relationship might have repercussions for the efficacy of biological control of water hyacinth by the delphacid. The wasp may negatively impact M. scutellaris populations making it difficult for the agent to successfully manage the invasive weed. Contrarily, the parasitoid may be beneficial by keeping the M. scutellaris populations stable, serving as a natural enemy.  相似文献

The possible significance of nestmate recognition in prevention of robbing and parasitism in three species of stingless bees was assessed. Nestmate discrimination abilities vary among them; Melipona quadrifasciataworkers attacked 74% of nonnestmate conspecifics that were encountered, while M. scutellarisand M. rufiventriswere less discriminating, attacking only 14 and 60% of non-nestmates, respectively. In tests of interspecific interactions, M. quadrifasciataand M. scutellariswere the least mutually tolerant of all species pairs tested. Tests with Apis melliferashowed a high degree of intolerance by two of the three Meliponaspecies.  相似文献

Water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes (Pontederiaceae) is one of the world's worst invasive species, responsible for damaging aquatic systems in many warmer parts of the globe including north America, Africa, Asia and Australia. The planthopper Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Delphacidae) has been released in USA and approved for release in South Africa for biocontrol of water hyacinth. We assessed this agent for suitability for release in Australia and found that a related native aquatic plant, Monochoria cyanea (Pontederiaceae) is within the fundamental host range of this insect. Adult survival, oviposition and development of nymphs to adult was equally high on M. cyanea as on the target species, although the quality of these next generation adults was lower than those reared on the target species. This demonstrates that M. scutellaris is not sufficiently specific for release in Australia. Nymphal development to adults occurred only in very low numbers on the three other Australian species of Monochoria. M. cyanea only occurs in Australia so M. scutellaris is still a possible water hyacinth biocontrol candidate for other regions depending on the results of assessment of the risk to local species of Monochoria. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of modern biocontrol agent assessment and reinforces the importance of testing of local non-target species.  相似文献

Analysing the pollen stored by stingless bees allows identification of the diversity of flowering plants visited by these bees while collecting resources during a given period. However, few studies have focused on investigating the sharing of resources between species of native bees that coexist in transitional plant formations, which support conservation efforts and increase colony productivity. This study aims to describe the partitioning of pollen resources among colonies of two species of stingless bees in the state of the Bahia (Brazil) through the analysis of stored pollen. The study was conducted in neighbouring vegetation zones of the relevant species Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides and Melipona scutellaris by collecting monthly pollen samples stored by three colonies of each species over one year. The collected samples were treated using the acetolysis technique, and the partitioning of pollen resources between the two species was investigated through quali-quantitative analysis of the treated pollen. The results show that among the 16 pollen types belonging to a particular species or group identified in the Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides samples and the 18 identified in the Melipona scutellaris samples, 13 were shared by both species. The two most common pollen types stored by both species were from Mimosa arenosa (Fabaceae, Mimosoidae) and Eucalyptus sp. (Myrtaceae). These results demonstrate the niche similarity of pollen pasture between these two species and suggest that conservation efforts for these bee species should focus on the plant families most visited by bees.  相似文献

A comparison was made of karyotypes of 5 species in the Aedes scutellaris group and their hybrids. All species had 3 distinct pairs of metacentric chromosomes (2n=6). These were of similar lengths in Ae: malayensis and Ae. alcasidi, and in Ae. polynesiensis and Ae. pseudoscutellaris. However, chromosome 1 in Ae. polynesiensis and Ae. kesseli, and chromosome 2 in Ae. pseudoscutellaris and Ae. kesseli were of unequal lengths. Meiotic analyses revealed that chromosome asynapsis was frequently seen in species hybrids. There was a significant variation in chiasma frequencies between species and their hybrids. However, the mean chiasma frequency was species specific. In addition, the mean chiasma frequency of species hybrids and the extent of chromosomal asynapsis provided a measure of genetic homology between species. Based on the assumption that a dicentric bridge and an acentric fragment were due to a single crossover within a paracentric inversion loop the following conclusions are made. Ae. malayensis and Ae. alcasidi are polymorphic for one paracentric inversion in chromosome 1. Ae. polynesiensis and Ae. pseudoscutellaris, and Ae. pseudoscutellaris and Ae. kesseli are fixed for one paracentric inversion in chromosome 2. Similarly, Ae. polynesiensis and Ae. kesseli are fixed for one paracentric inversion in chromosome 1. These chromosomal differences between species are discussed with respect to hybrid fertility data reported earlier.  相似文献

Melipona scutellaris is a eusocial bee with potential to be used as a crop pollinator. This study aimed to identify pollen types used by Melipona scutellaris through the analysis of pollen loads and honey samples in colonies established in a coffee plantation. We analysed 117 pollen loads and pollen content of 15 honey samples. In the pollen loads, we identified 40 pollen types. Poincianella pyramidalis, Coffea arabica, Commelina villosa, Mimosa tenuiflora, Myrcia, Senna macranthera, Solanum and Syagrus coronata stood out as predominant pollen. We found a negative correlation between the abundances of the pollen types Coffea arabica and Mimosa tenuiflora during coffee flowering. In the honey samples, we recorded 33 pollen types. Eucalyptus and Machaerium occurred in frequencies of between 16 and 45%. Although Melipona scutellaris gathers resources from several plant species, its diet is based on a relatively narrow subset of plants.  相似文献

A slightly modified Giemsa smear procedure consistently demonstrated Wolbachia pipientis in Culex pipiens and the Wolbachia species of infected members of the Aedes scutellaris group. Aposymbiosis was induced in Aedes polynesiensis by treatment with 0.017 mg/ml tetracycline hydrochloride or by rearing larvae at temperatures of 32–33°C for 5–7 days. Aposymbiotic females were incompatible with infected males but the reciprocal cross was fertile. By light and electron microscopy wolbachiae were found in ovaries of Aedes albopictus, A. cooki, A. Niuafo'ou sp., A. polynesiensis from American Samoa and Tahiti, A. riversi, A. Tafahi sp., and A. upolensis. Wolbachiae were not detected in A. alcasidi, A. oceanicus, A. triseriatus, Culex peus, two laboratory colonies of C. pipiens, Culiseta incidens, Toxorhynchites amboinensis, or T. brevipalpis. Wolbachiae were found also in the ovarian follicular epithelium of A. albopictus. This is the first record of mosquito wolbachiae in nongerminal gonadal tissue.  相似文献

The DNA probes, P1887, P2405, P2056 (being specific tags for Aedes aegypti genes coding for ribosomal RNA) and a centric heterochromatin probe, K20-1A5, were chosen to hybridize the metaphase chromosomes from the testes of four mosquito species, Culex pipiens, Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Aedes triseriatus. In addition, a single plasmid, P2392, which contained the three probes, P1887, P2405 and P2056, was also used as chromosome landmark in aedine species. Only the Aedes aegypti metaphase chromosome 1-specific tag, P1887, was conserved in Aedes albopictus, Aedes triseriatus, and Culex pipiens metaphase chromosomes. Aedes triseriatus exhibited two gene loci, on chromosomes 1 and 3, coding for ribosomal RNA per haploid genome. When the specific probes for chromosomes 2 and 3, 2405 and 2056, were used in the fluorescence in situ hybridization technique against the metaphase chromosomes the fluorescent signals were not seen in Aedes albopictus, Aedes triseriatus or Culex pipiens. Also the centric heterochromatin probe, K20-1A5, exhibited strong fluorescent signals on chromosomes 1, 2 and 3 of Aedes aegypti. These fluorescent signals were not observed in metaphase chromosomes derived from the other aedine species, indicating that the centromere sequence can vary within the species.This paper was presented at the Second Arab Conference on Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, held in the Kingdom of Bahrain, 15–17 April, 2002 and is published here with the endorsement of the Co-ordinator of the Scientific Committee, Professor Essam H. Satellite DNAs (satDNAs) and transposable elements (TEs) are among the main components of constitutive heterochromatin (c-heterochromatin) and are related to their functionality, dynamics, and evolution. A peculiar case regarding the quantity and distribution of c-heterochromatin is observed in the genus of bees, Melipona, with species having a low amount of heterochromatin and species with high amount occupying almost all chromosomes. By combining low-pass genome sequencing and chromosomal analysis, we characterized the satDNAs and TEs of Melipona quadrifasciata (low c-heterochromatin) and Melipona scutellaris (high low c-heterochromatin) to understand c-heterochromatin composition and evolution. We identified 15 satDNA families and 20 TEs for both species. Significant variations in the repeat landscapes were observed between the species. In M. quadrifasciata, the repetitive fraction corresponded to only 3.78% of the genome library studied, whereas in M. scutellaris, it represented 54.95%. Massive quantitative and qualitative changes contributed to the differential amplification of c-heterochromatin, mainly due to the amplification of exclusive repetitions in M. scutellaris, as the satDNA MscuSat01-195 and the TE LTR/Gypsy_1 that represent 38.20 and 14.4% of its genome, respectively. The amplification of these two repeats is evident at the chromosomal level, with observation of their occurrence on most c-heterochromatin. Moreover, we detected repeats shared between species, revealing that they experienced mainly quantitative variations and varied in the organization on chromosomes and evolutionary patterns. Together, our data allow the discussion of patterns of evolution of repetitive DNAs and c-heterochromatin that occurred in a short period of time, after separation of the Michmelia and Melipona subgenera.
