Stock enhancement is the main source of Acipenser gueldenstaedtii and A. stellatus recruitment in the Sea of Azov, where up to 30 million juveniles have been released in recent years. The hatchery production strategy aimed solely to produce and release the largest possible number of juveniles, utilizing only the most mature broodfish of the spring spawning run. Although monitoring of age, mass and physiological conditions of the broodstock during the period of hatchery breeding did not show significant changes, the spawning run was dramatically shortened from several months to just 15 days, and includes only fish with advanced gonadal maturity. Conservation of the Azov Sea species and their unique spawning ecotypes is currently supported by the Federal Living Gene Bank, which maintains over 9000 adults of eight endangered species. This paper summarizes the results of comparative analysis of biological characteristics such as growth, age of the first sexual maturation, relative fecundity, and morphological and physiological indices in wild and cultured specimens of different species and intraspecific groups of sturgeons. We conclude that there is a need for developing better hatchery technologies to maintain diversity of the stocks, through breeding protocols that maximize the genetic diversity of offspring based on evaluation of parentage and relatedness in farmed stocks by microsatellite loci.  相似文献

Since the late 20th century, the biomass of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. has increased. Hokkaido, northern Japan, is one of the main areas of chum salmon O. keta production in the North Pacific and intensive hatchery programs support the recent high abundance. However, proper management of naturally spawning populations is necessary to conserve healthy stocks of this species. In 2008, we started a program to assess the naturally spawning chum salmon populations in Hokkaido. Of the total of approximately 1,500 rivers in Hokkaido, 238 rivers with lengths of longer than 8 km (excluding those rivers used for hatchery broodstock collection) were surveyed in 2008 and 2009. The number of non-enhanced rivers found to contain naturally reproducing chum salmon was 59 (31.4% of surveyed rivers) and 50 (37.6% of surveyed rivers) rivers in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Including the rivers where hatchery broodstock were collected and rivers shorter than 8 km that contain naturally spawning chum salmon, chum salmon ascended at least 191 and 175 rivers in Hokkaido in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Repeated foot surveys indicated that the run timings of naturally spawning chum salmon may be affected by coastal commercial fisheries. This study showed that naturally spawning chum salmon remain in many rivers in Hokkaido where hatchery programs have been intensively conducted.  相似文献

The importance of genetic evaluations in aquaculture programmes has been increased significantly not only to improve effectiveness of hatchery production but also to maintain genetic diversity. In the present study, wild and captive populations of a commercially important neotropical freshwater fish, Brycon cephalus (Amazonian matrinchã), were analyzed in order to evaluate the levels of genetic diversity in a breeding programme at a Brazilian research institute of tropical fish. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA fingerprinting was used to access the genetic variability of a wild stock from the Amazon River and of three captive stocks that correspond to consecutive generations from the fishery culture. Although farmed stocks showed considerably lower genetic variation than the wild population, a significantly higher level of polymorphism was detected in the third hatchery generation. The results seem to reflect a common breeding practice on several hatchery fish programmes that use a small number of parents as broodstocks, obtaining reproductive success with few non‐identified mating couples. The obtained data were useful for discussing suitable strategies for the genetic management and biodiversity conservation of this species.  相似文献

Genetic variations within and between nine hatchery stocks and seven natural populations of abalone including Ezo-abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) and Kuro-abalone (H. d. discus) were assayed with nine microsatellite markers. Marked reductions of genetic variability in the hatchery stocks were recognized in the allelic diversity and mean heterozygosity compared with the natural populations. Thirteen of 16 significant HWE deviations in hatchery stocks revealed heterozygotes excess, while all natural populations did not show such a tendency. Highly significant F ST values were observed for all cases between the hatchery stocks, and between the hatchery stocks and natural populations. Genetic distance (D A) between each hatchery stock and the geographically proximal population (mean ± SD, 0.108 ± 0.035) were similar to those estimated for between the natural Ezo-abalone and Kuro-abalone (0.101 ± 0.021). The self-assignment test, which allocated individuals to their own stock with a high success rate, provided evidence of solid genetic differences among the nine hatchery stocks. These results suggests that the allelic composition and diversity in the natural populations was not necessarily reflected in the hatchery stocks owing to population bottleneck and genetic drift through seedling process, and thus the seedling and stocking practice of these hatchery stocks should take much notice of the results to conserve the genetic diversity of natural populations.  相似文献

The Caspian Sea, the largest inland closed water body in the world, has numerous endemic species. The Caspian brown trout (Salmo trutta caspius) is considered as endangered according to IUCN criteria. Information on phylogeography and genetic structure is crucial for appropriate management of genetic resources. In spite of the huge number of studies carried out in the Salmo trutta species complex across its distribution range, very few data are available on these issues for S. trutta within the Caspian Sea. Mitochondrial (mtDNA control region) and nuclear (major ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 1, ITS-1, and ten microsatellite loci) molecular markers were used to study the phylogeography, genetic structure, and current captive breeding strategies for reinforcement of Caspian trout in North Iranian rivers. Our results confirmed the presence of Salmo trutta caspius in this region. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated its membership to the brown trout Danubian (DA) lineage. Genetic diversity of Caspian brown trout in Iranian Rivers is comparable to the levels usually observed in sustainable anadromous European brown trout populations. Microsatellite data suggested two main clusters connected by gene flow among river basins likely by anadromous fish. No genetic differences were detected between the hatchery sample and the remaining wild populations. While the current hatchery program has not produced detectable genetic changes in the wild populations, conservation strategies prioritizing habitat improvement and recovering natural spawning areas for enhancing wild populations are emphasized.  相似文献

We collected all available information (i.e. international and local journals, conference proceedings, theses, technical reports) on the spawning season (n = 511 stocks, 168 species), gonadosomatic index (n = 237 stocks, 81 species) and sex ratio (n = 97 stocks, 68 species) of Mediterranean marine fish. The 511 stocks represented 20 orders (most were Perciformes, 283 stocks) and 65 families (most were Sparidae: 17 species and 63 stocks). Overall, 346 stocks (128 species) spawned between April and August, 139 stocks (60 species) between September and March, while the remaining 26 stocks (13 species) were all-year-round spawners. In addition, 174 stocks (34.1%) were characterised by an extended (>4 months) spawning season, but, for most stocks (332 stocks, 64.4%), spawning duration ranged from 2 to 4 months inclusive. Regardless of the onset and the duration of spawning, the spawning period of 284 and 287 stocks included June and July, respectively, indicating that most Mediterranean species are summer spawners. Female gonadosomatic index ranged between 0.06 and 37 (mean ± SE = 8.55 ± 0.647, n = 95) and was significantly higher (t-test: t = 5.58, P < 0.001) than the corresponding male one, which ranged between 0.06 and 30 (mean ± SE = 4.21 ± 0.431, n = 95). Congeneric species that occupied the same area and share the same requirements exhibited successive and non-overlapping spawning (e.g. Sparidae in the Adriatic Sea, Mugilidae in the Ionian Sea and Tunisian waters). The knowledge of the spawning period coupled with information on spawning and nursery grounds and detailed knowledge of mating systems, social interactions, maturity and fecundity may be very useful for fisheries management.  相似文献

The Korean starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus, is economically valuable coastal resident fish species. However, the annual catch of this fish has fluctuated and suffered major declines in Korea. We examined the genetic diversity and population structure for four wild populations and three hatchery stocks of Korean starry flounder to protect its genetic integrity using nine microsatellites. A group of 339 genotypes belonging to seven populations were screened. High degrees of polymorphism at the microsatellite loci were observed within both the wild and hatchery populations. Compared to the wild populations, genetic changes, including reduced genetic diversity and highly significant differentiation, have occurred in cultured stocks. Significant population differentiation was also observed in wild starry flounder populations. Similar degrees of inbreeding and significant Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium deviations were detected in both the wild and the hatchery populations. The genetic connectivity pattern identified four distinct metapopulations of starry flounder in Korea by clustering in the phylogenetic tree, Bayesian analyses, molecular variance analysis, PCA and multidimensional scaling analysis. A pattern of isolation-by-distance was not significant. This genetic differentiation may be the result of the co-effects of various factors, such as historic dispersal, local environment or anthropogenic activities. These results provide useful information for the genetic monitoring of P. stellatus hatchery stocks, for the genetic improvement of this species by selective breeding and for designing suitable management guidelines for the conservation of this species.  相似文献

Two cod stocks (western Baltic cod, WBC, and eastern Baltic cod, EBC) are managed in the Baltic Sea which is characterized by different main spawning areas and different main spawning periods. In this study we analyse the spatial and temporal occurrence of spawning individuals of both cod stocks in the main spawning grounds of the Baltic Sea based on eight microsatellite loci. Our results suggest that EBC (Gadus morhua callarias) has formed currently temporally stable, substantially homogeneous population not only in the Bornholm Sea (ICES SD: 25) but also in the Arkona Sea (ICES SD: 24). The presented analyses proved that EBC (G. m. callarias) can temporarily also spawn in the Belt Sea.  相似文献

Artificial breeding programmes commonly lead to domestication, which is associated with many behavioural differences that can reduce the success of animals released into natural environments. To better understand the factors contributing to domestication, we used a captive population of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) to partition hormonal and behavioural differences to effects of the breeding method and rearing environment. We compared 9‐mo‐old juveniles from three lines that shared a common genetic background: (1) the Channel line produced by natural spawning and reared in a low‐density environment with a natural substrate for approx. 6 mo before being transferred to the hatchery; (2) the Hatchery line produced by artificial spawning; and (3) the Transfer line produced by natural spawning but reared in the hatchery from the eyed‐egg stage. Plasma concentrations of 11‐ketotestosterone (11‐KT) and cortisol were measured in groups of 150 fish and again after 4 d of social interactions in groups of six fish. There was no difference in 11‐KT among lines in large groups, but in small groups, Transfer fish had lower 11‐KT concentrations and were significantly less aggressive than both Channel and Hatchery fish. Regardless of group size, concentrations of the stress hormone cortisol were nearly twofold higher in Channel fish than in Hatchery and Transfer fish. Furthermore, the elevated cortisol concentrations in Channel fish were associated with 35% lower feeding rates than in the other two lines. Our study details complex behavioural and hormonal responses to breeding method and rearing environment in juvenile salmon.  相似文献

To assess whether parental mate choice and early rearing in a semi‐natural spawning channel may benefit the culture of Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 90 day growth trials were conducted using hatchery O. tshawytscha (hatchery), mate choice O. tshawytscha (i.e. the offspring of parents allowed to choose their own mate) that spent 6 months in a spawning channel prior to hatchery rearing (channel) and mate choice O. tshawytscha transferred to the hatchery as fertilized eggs (transfer). During the growth trials, all O. tshawytscha stocks were reared separately or in either mixed channel and hatchery or transfer and hatchery groups for comparison of performance to traditional practices. After 60 days in fresh water, all O. tshawytscha were transferred to seawater for an additional 30 days. Reared separately, all stocks grew c. 4·5 fold over 90 days but specific growth rate (G) and food conversion efficiency were higher in fresh water than after seawater transfer on day 60. In contrast, hatchery O. tshawytscha from mixed hatchery and channel and hatchery and transfer growth trials had a larger mass and length gain than their counterparts on day 60, but reduced G in seawater. In general, plasma levels of growth hormone, insulin‐like growth factor I and cortisol did not differ among any O. tshawytscha groups in either the separate or mixed growth trials. Despite some differences in gill Na+,K+‐ATPase activity, all O. tshawytscha had a high degree of seawater tolerance and experienced virtually no perturbation in plasma chloride following seawater transfer. Overall, all O. tshawytscha exhibited similar growth and seawater performance under traditional hatchery conditions and any benefit derived from either parental mate choice or semi‐natural early rearing environment was only observed in the presence of mutual competition with hatchery O. tshawytscha.  相似文献

The native European flat oyster Ostrea edulis is listed in the OSPAR Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (species and habitat protection) and in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. Once extremely abundant in the nineteenth century, European stocks of O. edulis have declined during the twentieth century to rare, small, localised populations due to overexploitation, habitat degradation and, most recently, the parasitic disease bonamiosis. Selective breeding programmes for resistance to bonamiosis have been initiated in France and Ireland. High genetic diversity and bonamiosis-resistance would be important features of any sustainable restoration programmes for O. edulis. Oysters were sampled across Europe from four hatchery sources, four pond-cultured sources and four wild, but managed fisheries and were genotyped at five microsatellite loci. Hatchery-produced populations from small numbers of broodstock showed a significant loss of genetic diversity relative to wild populations and pedigree reconstruction revealed that they were each composed of a single large full-sib family and several small full-sib families. This extremely low effective population size highlights the variance in reproductive success among the potential breeders. Pond-cultured oysters were intermediate in genetic diversity and effective population size between hatchery and wild populations. Controlled hatchery production allows the development of bonamiosis-resistant strains, but at the expense of genetic diversity. Large scale pond culture on the other hand can provide a good level of genetic diversity. A mixture of these two approaches is required to ensure a healthy and sustainable restoration programme for O. edulis in Europe.  相似文献

The pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus conservation propagation program has augmented declining wild populations since the 1990s and the older age classes of hatchery‐origin fish are beginning to reach sexual maturity in the wild. Currently, the majority of the information available on the age and size at first maturity and spawning periodicity for pallid sturgeon in the upper basin is from captive hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon (i.e. age and size at first maturity and spawning periodicity) or from wild pallid sturgeon artificially spawned in the propagation program (i.e. spawning periodicity). The purpose of this study was to document age and size at first maturity and spawning periodicity of known age hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon that have reached maturity in the wild. Radio‐tagged pallid sturgeon in the upper Missouri River upstream of Fort Peck Reservoir were serially sampled in the early‐spring over multiple years and assigned to reproductive classifications each year based on sex‐steroid concentrations. The youngest reproductively‐active male hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon sampled was 14.5 years old and the youngest female was 18. Hatchery‐origin males were observed having annual (N = 3) and biennial (N = 2) reproductive cycles. The observed spawning periodicity was similar to what has been reported elsewhere for the species. The youngest mature fish in this study are older and larger than what has been reported for those retained in captivity, indicating that body size alone is not a reliable predictor of maturity for pallid sturgeon.  相似文献

Zostera noltii is an important species of eelgrass occurring along European, north African, Mediterranean, Black Sea and Azov Sea coasts. Nine microsatellite loci were developed and no linkage disequilibrium was observed. Cross‐amplification was observed for all loci (polymorphic) in Z. japonica; only four loci amplified (monomorphic) in Z. marina.  相似文献

Biochemical genetic marking of Sea of Azov-Black Sea shads (Alosa immaculata, A. caspia, and A. maeotica) of three local stocks—Danube, Dnepr, and Azov—was performed based on an analysis of 19 enzyme loci and a series of loci coding muscle structural proteins. The high degree of monomorphism and the absence of any differences in the allele pools are shown, thus confirming their conspecificity. It seems that Caspian, Brazhnikov, and Pontic shads are only morphologically discrete forms and their species rank is unjustified. In truth, they are local and migratory ecomorphs that are almost always present in anadromous fish species.  相似文献

Three populations (Azov, Caspian, and Black Sea) of Russian sturgeon Acipenser queldenstaedtii were tested for polymorphism at nuclear (RAPD and microsatellites) and mitochondrial (PCR identification of two mitotypes) markers. In addition, morphometric analysis of he representatives of Azov population was carried out. According to the morphological characters, the Black Sea population occupied an intermediate position between the Caspian and Azov populations, reflecting the phylogeography of this species. In agreement with the morphometric data, genetic distances (the data of STR analysis) also placed the Black Sea population between the Caspian and Azov populations (F ST = 0.058 and 0.043). The genetic distance between the Azov and Caspian population was somewhat higher (F ST = 0.070). The highest allelic polymorphism at four microsatellite loci was found observed in Caspian population, while the lowest polymorphism was in the Sea of Azov. RAPD analysis distinguished high polymorphism within the populations, although it was not feasible for interpopulation analysis. Using the method differentiating the “baerii-like” and typical “gueldenstaedtii” mitotypes, the absence of the “baerii-like” marker in the Black Sea population was demonstrated. The frequency of this marker in Caspian and Azov populations constituted 31.1 and 1.8%, respectively. Possible evolutionary reasons for the interpopulation differences observed are discussed.  相似文献

The paper describes the contemporary status of sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea. The effect of natural reproduction and hatchery production on sturgeon population restocking is estimated. Variations in the status of spawning populations of sturgeons migrating into the Volga River were analysed. Recommendations on appropriate measures for conservation of the Caspian sturgeon stocks are presented.  相似文献

A survey‐based assessment of an eastern Mediterranean data‐limited black anglerfish (Lophius budegassa; Spinola, 1807) stock was carried out to elucidate its population and exploitation trends. A catch‐based method was also applied to estimate its maximum sustainable yield (MSY). The effect on the long‐term spawning stock biomass and yield of a wide range of exploitation regimes (combinations of F and selectivity) was investigated using an age‐structured population model parameterised for Mediterranean anglerfish stocks. The analysis indicated an increasing trend of anglerfish fishing mortality (F) in the eastern Mediterranean from the mid‐1990s onwards, and that recent catches were 41% higher than the median MSY estimate. Catching Mediterranean anglerfish at least three years after they mature at an = 0.4–1 year?1 would ensure high yields at sustainable levels of stock depletion. Examination of the empirical exploitation regimes in five anglerfish stocks across the Mediterranean Sea illustrates their unfulfilled potential for higher sustainable yields, mainly due to overexploitation of juveniles.  相似文献

Ecologists have examined the synchronization of population dynamics across space as a means to understand how populations respond to climate variation. However, response diversity may reflect important variation among local population dynamics driven by population‐specific responses to regional environmental change. We used long‐term data on sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka from pristine watersheds of southwestern Alaska to show that populations spawning in close proximity (<40 km) to one another have a limited degree of synchrony in their dynamics, even after accounting for density‐dependent processes. In fact, the dynamics of local populations of stream‐spawning sockeye salmon were no more coherent than those of stocks at a much coarser resolution across this region of Alaska. We examined four hypotheses to explain the observed patterns of asynchrony among stream‐spawning populations, and found that populations spawning in dissimilar habitats, and using different nursery lakes were less synchronized in their productivity. Similarity in the age structure of spawning adults was less correlated with synchrony in productivity. These results emphasize the importance of maintaining diverse spawning and rearing habitat for the conservation of Pacific salmon, and should guide conservation planning for Pacific salmon populations in regions where natural dynamics have been altered by habitat loss, hatchery practices, and over‐fishing.  相似文献

Hatchery and wild juvenile populations of steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss and coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch , in a small coastal watershed in central California, were sampled throughout the year in a stream and at a hatchery. Both species grew faster in captivity than in the wild. Hatchery fish of both species had elevated gill Na+, K+‐ATPase activity, and thus were ready to enter sea water when planted during the wild fish migration. Downstream migrant trapping and stream surveys indicated that hatchery smolts went to sea soon after planting, consequently avoiding the effects of competition and predation that commonly occur when hatchery‐bred juveniles are released. Adult steelhead were also sampled throughout the watershed. The return of hatchery steelhead was highly synchronized with that of wild steelhead, indicating that hatchery propagation had no adverse effects on the timing of the run. A disproportionate number of hatchery steelhead returned to the tributary where the hatchery was located, despite being planted throughout the watershed. Hatchery steelhead did not differ in mean age or size from wild steelhead. Observations of spawning indicated that hatchery and wild steelhead interbreed. Competition for mates or spawning substratum was rarely observed between hatchery and wild steelhead. Many of the problems commonly associated with artificial propagation can be avoided in small coastal watersheds when wild broodstock are used and fish are released as smolts.  相似文献
