A method of fostering calves onto nurse cows at the time of parturition of the elected nurse cow is described and compared with a traditionally fostered control group. The cow's own calf was removed before she had any contact with it and four pre-selected calves, which had been wiped with the amniotic fluid, were introduced to the cow within 2 min of parturition.A rapid, specific maternal bond was developed between the cow and her foster calves, resulting in no cross suckling and more uniform growth rates. As the calves were rapidly accepted by their foster dams, they were not subjected to the stresses associated with traditional fostering methods. This is reflected in their greater growth rates during the first 4 weeks.  相似文献

The aim of this project was to describe the behaviour of free-ranging cows and calves after birth and during growth to the age of 6 months. Ten bull and 10 heifer calves were followed from birth until first suckling. Calves were observed to record their position in the field once a day until 10 days of age. Focal observations of 5 bull and 5 heifer calves were made from 27 to 167 days of age.

Of the cows studied, 2 separated completely from the herd at calving. The calving sites were randomly distributed in the area available. After birth all cows licked their calves. The amount of licking between 0 and 30 min was significantly greater than that between 30 and 60 min after birth. The duration of the first suckling was significantly longer for heifer calves than for bull calves. Eleven of 17 calves changed area during the first day after birth. The duration of cows licking calves did not change significantly from 27 to 167 days of age, and was not correlated to duration of licking immediately after birth. Suckling frequency per hour, suckling time per hour and duration of each suckling did not change significantly from 27 to 167 days of age. Bull calves from 27 to 167 days of age had a significantly higher frequency than heifer calves of sniffings towards adult cows other than the mother and a significantly higher frequency of mountings of adult cows. Cows and calves spent more time together when the calf was a female than when it was a male, and more time when the weaning weight was low than when it was high.  相似文献

Background

Since 2006, cases of haemorrhagic diathesis in young calves have been observed with a much higher incidence than previously known. The syndrome, now uniformly called Bovine Neonatal Pancytopenia (BNP), is characterized by multiple (external and internal) haemorrhages, thrombocytopenia, leukocytopenia, and bone marrow depletion. Although various infectious and toxicological causes of bleeding disorders in calves have been ruled out, the aetiology of BNP remains unknown. However, field observations have led to the hypothesis that the aetiological principle may be transmitted to calves via colostrum.  相似文献

Maternal nutrition affects the development of the fetus and postnatal performance of the calf. Methionine may play a critical role in developmental programming and is likely deficient in beef cows fed low-quality forage. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of metabolizable methionine supply to lactating beef cows during the periconception period on performance of cows, calves, and subsequent offspring. This project involved two consecutive production cycles commencing at calving in which dietary treatments were fed to cows during the periconception period along with measurements on cows and initial calves in Production Cycle 1, and measurements on subsequent calves in Production Cycle 2. Brangus-Angus crossbred lactating beef cows (N = 108; age = 6.4 (2.8) year) were stratified by previous calving date and assigned to one of three supplements: (1) control, molasses plus urea at 2.72 kg/day as fed, (2) fishmeal, 2.27 kg/day molasses plus urea plus 0.33 kg/day as fed of fishmeal, and (3) methionine, 2.72 kg/day of molasses plus urea plus 9.5 g/day of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butanoic acid. Cows were fed supplements and low-quality limpograss (Hemarthria altissima) hay while grazing dormant bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flüggé) pastures during the 115-day periconception period from December 2014 to April 2015 in Production Cycle 1 only. Body weight change and milk yield of cows were measured during the periconception period in Production Cycle 1. Body weight of calves was measured at birth and weaning in both production cycles. Following weaning in Production Cycle 2, eight subsequent steer calves per treatment were individually housed for a 42-day metabolism experiment. Treatment did not affect (P > 0.10) BW change of cows, but cows fed methionine tended (P = 0.09) to produce more energy-corrected milk than control and fishmeal. Treatment did not affect (P > 0.10) 205-day adjusted weaning weight of calves in either production cycle. During the metabolism experiment, subsequent calves from dams fed fishmeal and methionine gained faster (P < 0.05) and had greater (P < 0.05) gain:feed than control calves. Methionine calves tended (P = 0.06) to have greater apparent total tract NDF and ADF digestibility and lesser (P < 0.05) blood glucose concentration than control and fishmeal calves. These data indicate that maternal methionine supply during the periconception period plays an important role in programming future performance of the offspring.  相似文献

Bovine colostrum is important for neonates' health due to its nutritive and non-nutritive components. Heat treatment of colostrum is a well-established management tool, but it may influence colostrum components and affect the health status of calves. In our previous studies, we had shown that colostrum proteome and serum proteome of calves were altered by heat treatment to different degrees. Our objectives in this study were to investigate the effects of heat treatment on colostrum metabolome and the effect of feeding heat-treated colostrum on the serum metabolome of newborn calves. Further, the changes in serum metabolome from before to after colostrum feeding were characterized. Newborn Holstein female calves (n = 10) were randomized within pairs and fed heat-treated (n = 5; 60 °C, 60 min) or raw (n = 5) colostrum at 8.5% of birth BW by esophageal feeder within 1 h of birth. After a single colostrum feeding, calves were not fed until after the 8 h time point. Blood samples were taken immediately prior to feeding (0 h) and 8 h after feeding. The colostrum and serum metabolome were first analyzed using reverse-phase chromatography and tandem MS, and serum metabolome was then further analyzed using hydrophilic interaction chromatography and tandem MS. In colostrum metabolome, 458 features were identified and 328 were annotated and a trend of separation between raw and heat-treated colostrum could be observed through multivariate analysis. In serum metabolome, 3 360 features were identified and 1 439 were annotated, but no trend of separation was observed between the two groups of calves fed raw colostrum vs. heat-treated colostrum. The serum metabolome presented substantial differences comparing before (0 h) and after colostrum feeding (8 h); in particular, a tripeptide, β-homovaline-β-homoalanine-β-homoleucine, and 1-(2-acetamido-2-deoxy-α-d-glucopyranosyl)-1D-myo-inositol had higher concentrations after colostrum feeding than before, along with other metabolites that were not fully annotated. Based on a relatively small sample size, our findings point to the effect of heat treatment on the change of colostrum metabolome, but not on the change of serum metabolome of calves fed raw colostrum vs. heat-treated colostrum. Further studies using larger sample size and complementary analytical techniques are warranted to further explore potential heat treatment-induced alterations in colostrum metabolome.  相似文献

High-immune quality colostrum (IgG1 concentration ⩾50 g/l) is crucial for the health and development of the young calf. Studies on colostrum quality tend to focus on external factors such as breed, parity or dry period length, but few have focused on within-cow variations. Here we ran experiments to gain a deeper insight into within-cow variation in IgG1 concentrations in dairy cow colostrum. Trials were performed in an experimental farm, located in the Western part of France. Colostrum from each quarter and a composite sample (mix of four quarters) were concomitantly collected on 77 Holstein dairy cows just after calving to assess the influence of sample type on IgG1 concentrations. Variation in IgG1 concentrations during the first milking was studied on samples from nine cows collected every minute from the start of milking. Repeatability of colostral IgG1 concentration was estimated from 2009 and 2010 data on 16 healthy cows. IgG1 concentrations were tested using a radial immunodiffusion method. Sensitivity and specificity were similar regardless of sample type tested (individual quarter or composite milk). Mean average IgG1 concentration was 54.1 g/l in composite colostrum, and was significantly higher in hind quarter teats (56.2 g/l) than front quarter teats (53.1 g/l). Average IgG1 concentration did not change significantly during colostrum milking, and the variations observed (15% or less) were likely due to the laboratory method (CV 15%). IgG1 concentrations in dam colostrum increased slightly from 2009 to 2010 due to BW and parity effects. In 56% of cases, colostrum quality could have been assessed on either individual or composite colostrum samples collected at any time during the first milking without affecting the reliability of the measurement. However, in other cases, differences were significant enough to mean that estimates of average IgG1 concentration in colostrum from any one quarter would not be reliable. It is concluded that colostrum quality, from an IgG1 concentration point of view, could be assessed with a composite sample taken at any time during the first milking.  相似文献

One hundred and one Angus cows (average weight 614 kg) and their bull calves (average weight 213 kg) grazing improved summer pastures were used to determine cow and calf intake of liquid supplement, and its effect on forage intake and performance. Forty-seven pairs had access to a 410 g CP/kg DM molasses-based liquid supplement in an open feeder and 54 pairs were not supplemented. The study was conducted in southwestern Montana from July 28 to October 3, 1997. Cows consumed significantly more supplement (0.3 kg/day) than calves (0.1 kg/day) but both consumed 0.5 g/kg bodyweight per day. Supplemented cows gained 0.12 kg/day more (p<0.05) than unsupplemented cows; however, there was no difference (p>0.10) in body condition score change. Average daily gain by supplemented calves was 30% greater (p<0.01) than average daily gain by unsupplemented calves. Forage intake (g/kg body weight) by both supplemented cows and calves was 64% greater (p<0.01) than forage intake by unsupplemented cows and calves. There was no difference (p>0.10) in milk intake between supplemented and unsupplemented calves. There was no difference (p>0.10) in time spent at the supplement feeder between cows and calves, averaging 5.0 min/day. Time at the feeder was lowest for 7-year-old cows, intermediate for 6- and 8-year-old cows, and highest for 9-year-old cows (p<0.10). There was no difference (p>0.10) in supplement feeding bouts/day between age groups of cows. Calf liquid supplement intake (g/kg body weight) and time spent at the supplement feeder were similar to intake and time spent at the feeder by cows. Liquid supplementation increased forage intake and average daily gain by cows and calves grazing improved forages in late summer. The cost for additional weight gained by the supplemented calves was US$ 0.33/kg and October cattle prices in Montana were US$ 1.64/kg. Liquid supplementation was cost effective under the conditions of this study.  相似文献

Glucocorticoids and colostrum feeding influence postnatal maturation of the somatotropic axis. We have tested the hypothesis that dexamethasone (Dexa) affects the somatotropic axis in neonatal calves dependent on colostrum intake. Calves were fed either with colostrum or with a milk-based formula (n = 14/group), and, in each feeding group, one-half of the calves were treated with Dexa (30 micro g. kg body wt-1. day-1). Pre- and postprandial blood samples were taken on days 1, 2, 4, and 5, and liver samples were taken on day 5 of life. Dexa increased insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, but decreased growth hormone (GH) and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-1 and -2 plasma concentrations and increased GH receptor (GHR) mRNA levels in liver. Dexa increased IGF-I mRNA levels only in formula-fed calves and increased hepatic GHR binding capacity, but only in colostrum-fed calves. Colostrum feeding decreased IGFBP-1 and -2 plasma concentrations and hepatic IGFBP-2 and -3 mRNA levels. In conclusion, Dexa and colostrum feeding promoted maturation of the somatotropic axis. Dexa effects partly depended on whether colostrum was fed or not.  相似文献

1. The IGF-I concentrations in colostrum on days 1 and 2 after parturition were higher than those in cow and neonate plasma. 2. The modest increase in GH concentrations in cow plasma around parturition would not be enough to stimulate IGF-I release by tissues. 3. The concentrations of insulin, GH and glucagon in colostrum were substantially lower than those in plasma.  相似文献

Transfer of sufficient immunoglobulin G (IgG) to the neonatal calf via colostrum is vital to provide the calf with immunological protection and resistance against disease. The objective of the present study was to determine the factors associated with both colostral IgG concentration and colostral weight in Irish dairy cows. Fresh colostrum samples were collected from 704 dairy cows of varying breed and parity from four Irish research farms between January and December 2011; colostral weight was recorded and the IgG concentration was determined using an ELISA method. The mean IgG concentration in the colostrum was 112 g/l (s.d. = 51 g/l) and ranged from 13 to 256 g/l. In total, 96% of the samples in this study contained >50 g/l IgG, which is considered to be indicative of high-quality colostrum. Mean colostral weight was 6.7 kg (s.d. = 3.6 kg) with a range of 0.1 to 24 kg. Factors associated with both colostral IgG concentration and colostral weight were determined using a fixed effects multiple regression model. Parity, time interval from calving to next milking, month of calving, colostral weight and herd were all independently associated with IgG concentration. IgG concentration decreased (P < 0.01) by 1.7 (s.e. = 0.6) g/l per kg increase in the colostral weight. Older parity cows, cows that had a shorter time interval from calving to milking, and cows that calved earlier in spring or in the autumn produced colostrum with higher IgG concentration. Parity (P < 0.001), time interval from calving to milking (P < 0.01), weight of the calf at birth (P < 0.05), colostral IgG concentration (P < 0.01) and herd were all independently associated with colostral weight at the first milking. Younger parity cows, cows milked earlier post-calving, and cows with lighter calves produced less colostrum. In general, colostrum quality of cows in this study was higher than in many previous studies; possible reasons include use of a relatively low-yielding cow type that produces low weight of colostrum, short calving to colostrum collection interval and grass-based nutritional management. The results of this study indicate that colostral IgG concentration can be maximised by reducing the time interval between calving and collection of colostrum.  相似文献

It is shown that in summer the level of sodium, potassium and calcium in the colostrum and milk serum of cows for the first ten days of lactation is 1.5-2.0 times higher and the content of inorganic phosphorus lower than the analogous indices for cows in winter-spring. The concentration of iron, copper, zinc and chlorides in the colostrum and milk serum of cows in different seasons is unchanged.  相似文献

Twelve neonatal calves were experimentally infected with oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum. Six calves in group A fed hyperimmune colostrum at birth had significantly less diarrhea and shed oocysts for less time than did 6 calves in group B fed colostrum from cows that were not hyperimmune. Calves in group A had diarrhea for 0-4 days (means = 2.3 days), whereas calves in group B had diarrhea for 4-6 days (means = 5.0 days). Calves in group A shed oocysts for 4-9 days (means = 6.2 days), whereas calves in group B shed oocysts for 7-11 days (means = 8.5 days). These findings indicate that passive lacteal immunity conferred partial protection against cryptosporidiosis. Whether such protection was provided by the immunoglobulins that were highly elevated in the colostrum (greater than 1:200,000 for IgG1, IgM, and IgA) and constituted a large part of the circulating antibody in the calves, or by other biologically active factors, such as cytokines, is undetermined.  相似文献

Bovine oocytes were bisected, stained with Hoechst 33342 and observed under a fluorescent microscope to identify nucleated and enucleated demi-oocytes. Other oocytes were bisected but not stained, or bisected and only half of each oocyte stained, and viewed under a fluorescent microscope. The oocytes were then used for nuclear transfer by fusing them with embryonic blastomeres from a 5-6 day bovine embryo. The fusion rate and proportion developing into compact morulae or blastocysts was compared among different types of demi-oocytes. Expt 1 examined the effect of staining and indicated no effect on either fusion rate or embryonic development whether or not the oocytes were stained. In Expt 2, stained and unstained nucleated and enucleated oocytes were compared. As in the first experiment, there were no differences between stained and unstained demi-oocytes. There was no difference between fusion rates of nucleated and enucleated oocytes. However, there was a significant difference in embryonic development between nucleated (10.4%) and enucleated (22.6%) demi-oocytes (P less than 0.05). In a final experiment, stained and unstained enucleated oocytes were used for nuclear transfer and the resulting embryos transferred into recipient cows. There was no difference in pregnancy rates or in the number of normal calves born whether stained or unstained recipient oocytes were used. Results from these experiments indicate that Hoechst staining and fluorescent microscopy can be used to identify enucleated demi-oocytes, and that these can be used for nuclear transfer, and result in viable embryos and normal calves.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
