We investigate the patterns of abundance‐spatial occupancy relationships of adult parasite nematodes in mammal host populations (828 populations of nematodes from 66 different species of terrestrial mammals). A positive relationship between mean parasite abundance and host occupancy, i.e. prevalence, is found which suggests that local abundance is linked to spatial distribution across species. Moreover, the frequency distribution of the parasite prevalence is bimodal, which is consistent with a core‐satellite species distribution. In addition, a strong positive relationship between the abundance (log‐transformed) and its variance (log‐transformed) is observed, the distribution of worm abundance being lognormally distributed when abundance values have been corrected for host body size.
Hanski et al. proposed three distinct hypotheses, which might account for the positive relationship between abundance and prevalence in free and associated organisms: 1) ecological specialisation, 2) sampling artefact, and 3) metapopulation dynamics. In addition, Gaston and co‐workers listed five additional hypotheses. Four solutions were not applicable to our parasitological data due to the lack of relevant information in most host‐parasite studies. The fifth hypothesis, i.e. the confounded effects exerted by common history on observed patterns of parasite distributions, was considered using a phylogeny‐based comparison method. Testing the four possible hypotheses, we obtained the following results: 1) the variation of parasite distribution across host species is not due to phylogenetic confounding effects; 2) the positive relationship between mean abundance and prevalence of nematodes may not result from an ecological specialisation, i.e. host specificity, of these parasites; 3) both a positive abundance‐prevalence relationship and a negative coefficient of variation of abundance‐prevalence relationship are likely to occur which corroborates the sampling model developed by Hanski et al. We argue that demographic explanations may be of particular importance to explain the patterns of bimodality of prevalence when testing Monte‐Carlo simulations using epidemiological modelling frameworks, and when considering empirical findings. We conclude that both the bimodal distribution of parasite prevalence and the mean‐variance power function simply result from demographic and stochastic patterns (highlighted by the sampling model), which present compelling evidence that nematode parasite species might adjust their spatial distribution and burden in mammal hosts for simple epidemiological reasons.  相似文献

Monitoring quantitative parameters of parasitism by ligula intestinalis (Cestoda: Diphyllobothridae) was performed by examining 516 fish belonging to two introduced freshwater species: Rutilus rubilio (350 individuals) and Scardinius erythrophthalmus (166 individuals). These fish were collected in two dam reserves in Tunisia, Sidi Salem and Nebhana. The analysis of the aquatic bird's composition in these two reserves revealed the existence of piscivorous bird species that were previously reported as final host of Ligula. Monitoring the bird's composition highlighted higher relative abundance and frequency in Sidi Salem than in Nebhana dam reserve. The analyses of the prevalence, mean intensity and abundance of the parasite revealed the most important values in roach, Rutilus rubilio which seems to be the preferential second intermediate host of the parasite Ligula intestinalis in these environments. Comparative analysis of parasitism in both explored sites suggests that Ligula intestinalis presents two different strategies of infestation. In Sidi Salem reserve, which is larger than Nebhana and containing on important and diversified piscivorous species, the parasite infects a maximum of host individuals with low parasite mean intensity values. However, at Nebhana, which is a smaller reserve, the parasite infects fewer individuals than Sidi Salem but with higher mean intensity. The highest prevalence values were recorded in large size classes of roach species in Sidi Salem reserve.  相似文献

Distribution patterns, mean intensity and prevalence of Lernaeocera lusci (Copepoda, Pennellidae) in its 2 hosts Trisopterus luscus (Teleostei, Gadidae) and Merluccius merluccius (Teleostei, Merlucciidae) were examined, together with parasitic abundance and aggregation in relation to the size of the host. The mean parasite abundance and the variance to mean abundance ratio increased with host size, suggesting that the accumulation of this parasite had no noticeable impact on the structure of either host population. Merluccius merluccius being a newly colonized host in the Mediterranean, these results are discussed in relation to current ideas on the evolution of pathogenicity in heterospecific associations.  相似文献

Within any parasite species, variation among populations in standard infection parameters (prevalence, intensity and abundance) is an accepted fact. The proportion of hosts infected and the mean number of parasites per host are not fixed values across the entire geographic range of any parasite species. The question is whether this inter-population variation occurs within a narrow, species-specific range and is thus driven mainly by the biological features of the parasite, or whether it is substantial and unpredictable, leaving population parameters at the mercy of local conditions. Here, the repeatability of estimates of prevalence, intensity and abundance of infection was assessed across populations of the same parasite species, for 77 metazoan parasite species of Canadian freshwater fishes. Overall, parameter values from different populations of the same parasite species were more similar to each other and more different from those of other species, than expected by chance alone. Much of the variation in parameter values in the dataset was associated with differences between parasite species, rather than with differences among populations within species. This was particularly true for intensity and abundance of infection; in contrast, prevalence values, while somewhat repeatable among populations of the same species, still showed considerable variation. Among the higher taxa investigated (monogeneans, trematodes, cestodes, nematodes, acanthocephalans, copepods), there was no evidence that species of one taxon display intrinsically greater variation in population parameters than species of other taxa. Overall, the results suggest that intensity and abundance of infection are real species characters, though somewhat variable. This conclusion supports the view that the biological features of parasite species can potentially override local environmental conditions in driving parasite population dynamics.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to record different intermediate hosts of A. cantonensis and to determine the infection prevalence and intensity of this parasite in freshwater snails in relation to some ecological and biological factors. The study was conducted at Al-Salam irrigation Canal and Al-Abtal village (north Sinai) for one year, from March 2004 to February 2005. Thirteen species of freshwater snails of nine families were examined for A. cantonensis infection. Six species were found infected with A. cantonensis larvae. These species were L. carinatus, C. bulimoides, C. cyclostomoides, B. alexandrina, L. natalensis and M. tuberculta. The infection prevalence of A. cantonensis in the examined snails ranged from 0.63 to 2.24%. L. carinatus snail had the highest prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of A. cantonensis infection. Positive correlations were found between both prevalence and mean abundance of A. cantonensis and host size in L. carinatus and M. tuberculata. Negative correlations were detected between salinity and prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of larvae of A. cantonensis. The results demonstrated seasonal and spatial variation in the prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of infection among examined snails. In this study, A. cantonensis larvae were found in a wide range of freshwater snails and M. tuberculata snail was recorded as a new intermediate host for the first time. In conclusion, further investigations in other areas and controlled laboratory experiments of infection approaches are required to evaluate the possible threat of this parasite on humans.  相似文献

Crowding, i.e., the size of the infrapopulation inhabiting an individual host, is a major component of parasites' environment, which often influences both morphological and life-history characters (the so-called density-dependent characters) in different parasite taxa. Although crowding equals intensity in case of a single parasite individual, mean intensity of the host population does not define mean crowding of the parasite population. Crowding indices are notoriously hard to handle statistically because of the inherently large number of nonindependent values in data. In this study, we aim to investigate the apparently paradox features of crowding indices and to make some proposals and also to introduce statistical methods to calculate confidence intervals and 1-sample and 2-sample tests for mean crowding. All methods described in this study are supported by the freely distributed statistical software Quantitative Parasitology.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of population-level parameters of parasites, such as prevalence and mean intensity, require large sample sizes. The processing of such samples becomes an overwhelming task when parasites are abundant, as with trematode metacercariae in fishes. In the present study, a subsampling method reduced processing time while maintaining an accurate estimation of metacercariae prevalence and intensity across 3 trematode species and 2 fish species. By double sampling, we generated regression models to predict total intensity from a combination of subsamples. The key to this approach lies in choosing the best strategy from a large number of potential subsampling routines. We selected the most efficient routine by weighing the costs and benefits of each. This approach, however, could not provide an estimate of parasite abundance when no parasites occurred in the initial subsample. To estimate prevalence accurately, our subsampling algorithm prescribed an additional sampling sequence using a new, optimal regression model. In addition, we optimized the technique to measure three parasite species infecting a single host simultaneously. This efficient subsampling procedure decreased the overall processing time per host by up to 91% while obtaining accurate (R2 > 0.8) estimates for both prevalence and intensity.  相似文献

The distribution of the cestode Caryophyllaeides fennica in populations of the ide, roach, white bream and bream from the Rybinsk reservoir has been analyzed in regard to fish age. The relative abundance of C. fennica in populations of each host species was calculated as product of the helminthes abundance by the fish number in age groups. The highest prevalence and abundance of cestodes was found in the ide. All age classes of this species were infected, with the maximum in fishes of the age 3+ ... 5+. The roach is infected with C. fennica till only 10-year age; brean is infected till the age 4+. In the white bream C. fennica is an occasional parasite. The cestode number among hosts was as follows: bream--68%; roach--26%, ide--5%, white bream--1%. Different approaches to the estimation of the parasite abundance distribution among several host species (in terms of mean prevalence and intensity of the relative abundance of parasites) are discussed.  相似文献

We developed a rapid effective method for accurate estimation of intensity for the monogenean Lepidotrema bidyana, a gill parasite of silver perch Bidyanus bidyanus. This parasite requires monitoring because high-intensity infections reduce host growth and can lead to secondary bacterial and fungal infections. The most accurate method for counting L. bidyana was visual examination of fresh gills. There was a significant relationship between fish size and parasite intensity; however, there was no significant relationship between fish condition and parasite intensity. Parasite intensity estimates were generated by using the mean intensity of worms on the posterior hemibranch on the first left gill arch, compared to the total mean intensity of worms on all hemibranchs. Estimates were validated by predicting L. bidyana intensity from a random sample of silver perch obtained from aquaculture ponds. Parasite intensity estimates correlated strongly to real counts, and this method can be used to accurately predict parasite intensity on an individual host, and thus represents an improvement over previous methods.  相似文献

In this study, we tested which host species’ characteristics explain the nature and level of parasitism for host damselfly (Coenagrionidae)–water mite (Arrenuridae) parasite associations. Prevalence and intensity of mite parasites, and mite species richness were examined in relation to geographic range size, regional occurrence, relative local abundance, phenology and body size of host damselfly species. A total of 7107 damselfly individuals were collected representing 16 species from 13 sites in southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec, Canada. Using comparative methods, differences in prevalence and intensity of parasitism could be predicted by a host species’ geographic range and phenology. Barcoding based on Cytochrome Oxidase I revealed 15 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) for mite species. The number of mite OTUs known to infest a given host species was explained by a host species’ regional occurrence. Our findings demonstrate the need to measure factors at several ecological scales in order to understand the breadth of evolutionary interactions with host–parasite associations and the selective ‘milieu’ for particular species of both hosts and parasites.  相似文献

Water quality greatly influences the population density of aquatic biota, including parasites. In order to evaluate the relationship between fish parasites and water quality in Kashmir Himalayas, we assessed helminth parasite densities in Schizothorax niger Heckel, 1838 (an endemic cyprinid fish of Kashmir) from three lakes, namely Anchar, Manasbal and Dal, which reflected the varied stages of eutrophication. The overall prevalence of helminth infections was higher in the hypertrophic Anchar Lake (prevalence = 18.6%) compared to Manasbal Lake, which was the least eutrophied (prevalence = 6.4%). Furthermore, mean prevalence of monoxenous and heteroxenous parasites was higher in lakes containing higher levels of water degradation (Anchar and Dal). The mean number of helminth species per fish host was the highest in the hypertrophic lake (1.3 ± 0.3) in comparison to the least eutrophic lake (0.2 ± 1.5). Variability of calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean intensity and mean abundance) revealed that helminth parasite composition in the fish was affected by the lakes' environmental stress (degraded water quality). Therefore, data on the density of helminth parasites in fish can provide supplementary information on the pollution status of a water body.  相似文献

Several epidemiological models predict a positive relationship between host population density and abundance of directly transmitted macroparasites. Here, we generalize these, and test the prediction by a comparative study. We used data on communities of gastrointestinal strongylid nematodes from 19 mammalian species, representing examination of 6670 individual hosts. We studied both the average abundance of all strongylid nematodes within a host species, and the two components of abundance, prevalence and intensity. The effects of host body weight, diet, fecundity and age at maturity and parasite body size were controlled for directly, and the phylogenetically independent contrast method was used to control for confounding factors more generally. Host population density and average parasite abundance were strongly positively correlated within mammalian taxa, and across all species when the effects of host body weight were controlled for. Controlling for other variables did not change this. Even when looking at single parasite species occurring in several host species, abundance was highest in the host species with the highest population density. Prevalence and intensity showed similar patterns. These patterns provide the first macroecological evidence consistent with the prediction that transmission rates depend on host population density in natural parasite communities.  相似文献

Four computational methods for estimating mean fecundity are compared by Monte Carlo simulation. One of the four methods is the simple expedient of estimating fecundity at sample mean length, a method known to be downwardly biassed. The Monte Carlo study shows that the other three methods reduce bias and provide worthwhile efficiency gains. For small samples, the most efficient of the four methods is a 'bias adjustment', proposed here, that uses easily calculated sample statistics. For large samples, a numerical integration method has the highest efficiency. The fourth method, a 'direct summation' procedure which can be done easily in many statistical or spreadsheet programs, performs well for all sample sizes.  相似文献

Grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio Holthuis and P. vilgaris (Say), were collected at 11 localities along the coast of Georgia and surveyed for digenetic trematode metacercariae. The effect of trematode infection on grass shrimp fitness was also examined. Microphallus turgidas (Leigh) was the only trematode observed. The prevalence of metacercarial cysts of this parasite in P. pugio (75%) was higher than in P. vulgaris (24%), as were the mean intensity, abundance, and population density (no. cysts/cm host body length) of the parasite. Infected shrimp were found at every collection locality and parasite prevalence and density were greatest in P. pugio from higher salinity localities (> or = 20 parts per thousand [ppt]). There was no relation between host body size and parasite density in P. vulgaris, and parasite density increased with host body size in P. pugio, suggesting that the parasite does not affect host survival. There was no relation between parasite density and shrimp egg mass, but nonovigerous female P. pugio were more heavily infected than ovigerous ones. In addition, 1 metacercaria of M. turgidus in each of 2 specimens of P. vulgaris was parasitized by the haplosporidian Urosporidium crescens De Turk. This represents a new shrimp host record for this hyperparasite.  相似文献

In the Patagonian Andean region, 2 species of diplostomatids parasitize the brains of Galaxias maculatus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate seasonal variation, spatial variation, and association with host age in the transmission of Tylodelphys barilochensis and T. crubensis in several oligotrophic lakes in Argentinian Patagonia. Fishes were captured monthly in Lake Gutiérrez and bimonthly in Lake Escondido. One summer or autumn sample was also taken in several other Patagonian lakes. Infection parameters were calculated and compared using nonparametric tests. The 2 species co-occurred in most of the sampled lakes, with high values of prevalence and mean intensity. In Lake Gutiérrez and Lake Escondido, the intensity of both diplostomatid species did not show significant differences between sexes and co-varied with host length. All age classes were infected; maximum prevalence values were reached before maximum mean intensity values in the 1-yr age class. A seasonal pattern of prevalence and mean intensity of the 2 parasite species with autumn mean intensity values differing significantly from those of the other seasons was evident only in Lake Gutiérrez.  相似文献

Seasonal occurrence of Opechona pyriforme metacercariae in the Eirene tenuis population from Laguna Madre, Mexico was analyzed in zooplankton samples collected in October 1997 and January, May, and July 1998. Eirene tenuis medusae were present in May, July, and October, although parasites were found only in October and July samples. Host population density was positively correlated with both surface water temperature and salinity. Total sample prevalence was 3.74%, mean abundance of the parasite was 0.06, and intensity of infection ranged between 1 and 59 metacercariae/host. Prevalence differed significantly among seasons, while intensity of infection did not. Parasite distribution was found to be highly aggregated. Although O. pyriforme infected hydromedusae of all sizes, prevalence was higher in sizes above 2.11 mm umbrella diameter. Additionally, a tendency towards increasing intensity of infection values with increasing umbrella diameter of medusae was observed. This is the first record of E. tenuis as a second intermediate host of O. pyriforme, as well as the first record of this helminth in the Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

The Chinese sleeper Perccottus glenii Dybowski, 1877 is an invasive fish species rapidly expanding in Siberia and Europe. Its native range encompasses the Far East region of Russia, northeastern China and northern North Korea. We studied species composition, prevalence, mean abundance and variance of mean abundance of macroparasites of the Chinese sleeper in the native and the introduced range. The species composition of the parasite component communities differed considerably in the native and the introduced range. The frequency distributions of prevalence, mean abundance and variance of mean abundance of the parasites did not demonstrate any significant differentiation between the two parts of the host range. However, an analysis of the abundance–occupancy and the abundance–variance relationships revealed that the parasite component communities in the two parts of the host range were quite distinct. In the native range, prevalence increased faster and variance increased more slowly with the increasing abundance of the parasites than in the introduced range. These features are mostly associated with considerably increased prevalence, abundance and aggregation of the host-specific cestode Nippotaenia mogurndae in recipient water bodies as compared with the native habitats.

An epidemiological survey of anisakids was carried out on 209 specimens of greater forkbeard (Phycis blennoides) and 58 of forkbeard (Phycis phycis) captured off the Mediterranean coasts of Andalucía (southern Spain). Four species of nematodes were identified: Anisakis simplex s.l., Anisakis physeteris, Hysterothylacium aduncum and Hysterothylacium fabri. The total prevalence was 62.06% in the forkbeard and 58.85% in the greater forkbeard. The highest values of prevalence (56.90%), mean intensity (5.21) and mean abundance (2.96) were all obtained for H. fabri in the forkbeard. The most frequent parasite in the greater forkbeard was H. aduncum with 51.20% prevalence and values of 3.00 and 1.53 for mean intensity and mean abundance, respectively. The infestation parameters were also analyzed according to the host length, observing a maximum of parasitized fish (91.67%) in samples of P. blennoides longer than 40 cm, while in P. phycis, the highest prevalence (82.35%), conditioned by H. fabri parasitization, was found in fish with lengths between 30 and 35 cm.  相似文献
