Sex ratio and size structure constitute basic information in assessing reproductive potential and estimating stock size in fish populations. One hundred fifty-one individuals of Micropogonias furnieri caught by experimental otter trawls, in three zones (inner, central, and outer) of Sepetiba Bay between October 1998 and September 1999 were examined. Males outnumbered females (1.3:1.0) in all zones but no significant differences were detected. Only in the outer zone (5.0:1.0) were male/female rates significantly different according to the chi-square test. No temporal differences were observed in sex ratio. Fish size ranged from 81 to 244 mm total length (TL) with significant differences in 155 to 185 mm TL size classes, where males predominated, and a slightly higher number of females were observed for the smaller size class (TL = 95-150 mm). Size distribution varied according to the zone, with juveniles predominating in the inner and adults in the outer zone. Spatial difference in size structure observed in this study indicates that the inner bay is a rearing ground during the first life-cycle period, and movement toward the sea occurs as fish increase in size.  相似文献

Neuronal activity has been shown to be attenuated in cardiorespiratory and locomotor centers of the brain in response to a single bout of exercise in trained (TR) vs. untrained (UN) animals, but the mechanisms remain obscure. Based on this finding, dendritic branching patterns of seven brain areas associated with cardiorespiratory and locomotor activity were examined in TR and UN animals. Twenty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were kept in individual cages and divided into TR and UN. TR were provided with a running wheel and exercised spontaneously. After 85 or 120 days, exercise training indexes were obtained, including maximal oxygen consumption, percent body fat, resting heart rate, and heart weight-to-body weight ratios. The brain was removed and processed according to a modified Golgi-Cox procedure. Impregnated neurons from seven brain areas were examined in coronal sections: the periaqueductal gray, posterior hypothalamic area, nucleus of the tractus solitarius, rostral ventrolateral medulla, cuneiform nucleus, nucleus cuneatus, and cerebral cortex. Neurons were traced using a camera lucida technique and analyzed using the Sholl analysis of dendritic branching. t-tests were conducted to compare the mean number of intersections per neuron by grouping inner rings and outer rings and also comparing the total number of intersections per animal. There were significant differences between groups in the posterior hypothalamic area, periaqueductal gray, cuneiform nucleus, and nucleus of the tractus solitarius in the inner rings, outer rings, and the total number of intersections per animal. Our results show that dendritic fields of neurons in important cardiorespiratory and locomotor centers of the brain are attenuated in TR animals.  相似文献

Scales and opercular bones from 632 roach from the River Stour were used for age and back-calculated growth determinations. The scales had clearer inner annuli but operculars clearer outer annuli in fish more than nine years old. The annuli were laid in late May or early June at the beginning of the growth period. Growth was minimal between November and April. Roach from both rivers grow faster than those in most other European waters. Female roach grow faster than males; River Frome roach faster than those from the Stour. Spawning occurred in May and elaboration of gonads between September and May. Immature roach have an annual cycle in condition with a maximum in June and a minimum in early Spring. The condition of mature females is affected by the gonad cycle. The fecundity of Stour roach is represented by the formula: log egg number=4.43 log length (mm)—1.69. Approximately half of the Stour males attained sexual maturity at age III and most of the rest by age IV. Half of the females were mature at age IV and the remainder by age V. Both brood success and growth rate varied from year to year but independently of one another. Most Stour roach ate aquatic insect larvae and molluscs but algae were more frequent in the diet of larger fish.  相似文献

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor activity and the concentration of cholesterol were measured in the outer (glomerulosa/fasciculata) and inner (reticularis) zones of the adrenal cortex of the guinea pig to examine the relation between cholesterol content and LDL receptor activity. While the concentration of cholesterol was 2-3-times higher in the outer cortical zone, the maximum high-affinity binding capacity for LDL was essentially the same for the two zones, or slightly higher for the inner zone. Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) caused a significant increase in LDL receptor activity only in the outer zone, but led to a reduction in the cholesterol content in both adrenocortical zones. The treatment of animals with 17 alpha-ethinyl-estradiol also resulted in a reduction of cholesterol in both adrenocortical zones, but an increase in LDL receptor number only in the outer zone. The latter effect was partially reversed by the administration of dexamethasone. Aminoglutethimide, which was used in a dose that did not block steroidogenesis but did block the hydrolysis of cholesteryl esters in response to ACTH, did not prevent the ACTH-induced increase in LDL receptor number in the outer zone. Thus, the number of LDL receptors was increased in the zona fasciculata by ACTH in the absence of a reduction in cellular cholesterol content, while the number of LDL receptors in the zona reticularis was not increased by ACTH even in the face of a reduction in cellular cholesterol. Exclusive of the experiments employing aminoglutethimide, when the cellular cholesterol content was plotted against LDL binding activity, an excellent inverse correlation was revealed for the zona fasciculata, but essentially no correlation was noted for the zona reticularis. It is concluded that the outer and inner cortical zones of the guinea pig adrenal are quite distinct in the nature of their LDL receptor activity and regulation: the LDL receptor of the outer zone appears to function in a way similar to what has been reported for the whole adrenal cortex of other species in that receptor number correlates with tissue cholesterol content and is primarily regulated by ACTH; the LDL receptor number of the inner zone, however, does not correlate with tissue cholesterol content and is apparently not regulated by ACTH.  相似文献

Fertilized residual eggs were observed in the ovaries of spent females of a non-copulatory sculpin Hemilepidotus gilberti Jordan and Starks. Fertilized eggs were present in 23 of 35 females, and approximately 38% of the total residual eggs (n=227) were fertilized. These eggs were thought to be fertilized facultatively with spermatozoa that entered the ovary through ovarian fluid during spawning. The high calcium concentration (1.42+/-0.21 mM kg(-1)) in ovarian fluid, which is beyond the threshold concentration required for fertilization, may allow internal fertilization to occur. Embryos at various developmental stages were observed, but all were deformed and surrounded by unhardened chorions. Since no larvae were observed, all the fertilized residual eggs would have degenerated in the ovary in accordance with other unfertilized residual eggs. These observations suggest that the ovary of the oviparous fish H. gilberti is an unsuitable environment for embryos to develop, possibly because it may be unable to supply developing embryos with needed elements, such as oxygen.  相似文献

鱼鳞主要由表层的钙化层和内部的胶原纤维层构成,为提取鱼鳞胶原蛋白,首先要脱除鱼鳞表面的钙化层。本文主要研究鲤鱼鱼鳞在盐酸脱钙过程中的变化。鱼鳞在盐酸脱钙过程中外部形态首先发生变化,钙化层溶解变薄,鱼鳞的柔软性增加。随着脱钙过程的进行,盐酸逐渐渗透到鱼鳞内部。经过盐酸处理后鱼鳞的力学性质发生很大的改变,断裂强度大大降低,只有原始鱼鳞的1/3~1/4。说明鱼鳞中以羟基磷灰石为主要成分的无机物层对保护鱼鳞起到了很大的作用,也为鱼鳞坚韧的质构发挥了重要的作用。  相似文献

Groups of Sarotherodon mossambicus were treated with androgen by immersion or oral treatment at various stages of development. Fish were allowed to mature and the effects of treatment on gonadal and behavioral differentiation were examined. The effects of treatment on gonadal differentiation were assessed by determining the sex ratio for each group. Three treatments resulted in sex ratios significantly different from the 1:1 sex ratio obtained in untreated fish. Behavioral differences were detected between groups of males in three measures of territorial defense and aggression, and differences were detected between groups of females in two measures of male-female courtship interaction. A second experiment determined that early-treated females were more sensitive to a second androgen treatment later in life than females not exposed to androgen during development. A number of sex-reversed genetic females functioning as males were detected in two treatment groups with predominantly male sex ratios. There were no differences in the behavior of sex-reversed and non-sex-reversed male fish from the same treatment group. This study establishes that hormone treatments administered during development influence behavioral differentiation in a teleost.  相似文献

This work examines the influence of mating on ovarian follicle development in Triatoma infestans. The observations were carried out on both virgin and mated females, which were killed at various times after their emergence. There was no difference in the ovarian development of both experimental groups during the first gonadotrophic cycle. By the 7th day mated females as well as virgin females showed vitellogenic oocytes. The coriogenesis and ovulation process began on the 13th day after imaginal moulting. However we could observe that egg-laying was dependent on mating. Mated females laid eggs whereas virgin females did not lay eggs. However ovarian production was significantly greater in the mated females. It is suggested that in T. infestans mating stimulates egg-laying but it does no influence the oogenesis and ovulation process.  相似文献

Studies of various biological tissues have shown that residual strains are important for tissue function. Since a force balance exists in whole wall thickness specimens cut radially, it is evident that layer separation is an important procedure in the understanding of the meaning of residual stresses and strains. The present study investigated the zero-stress state and residual strain distribution in a three-layer model of the pig oesophagus. The middle part of the oesophagus was obtained from six slaughterhouse pigs. Four 3-mm-wide rings were serially cut from each oesophagus. Two of them were used for separating the wall into mucosa-submucosa, inner and outer muscle layers. The remaining two rings were kept as intact rings. The inner and outer circumferences and wall thickness of different layers in intact and separated rings were measured from the digital images in the no-load state and zero-stress state. The opening angle was measured and the residual strain at the inner and outer surface of different layers and the intact wall were computed. Compared with intact sectors (62.8+/-9.8 degrees ), the opening angles were smaller in the inner muscle sectors (37.2+/-11.4 degrees , P<0.01), whereas the opening angles of mucosa-submucosa (63.9+/-6.8 degrees ) and outer muscle sectors (63.9+/-6.8 degrees ) did not differ (P>0.1). Referenced to the zero-stress state of the intact sectors, the inner and outer residual strains of the intact rings was -0.128+/-0.043 and outer residual strain was 0.308+/-0.032. Referenced to the "true" zero-stress state of separated three-layered sectors, the inner residual strain of intact rings were -0.223+/-0.021 (P<0.01) and 0.071+/-0.022 (P<0.01). Referenced to the "true" zero-stress state, the residual strain distribution of different layers in intact rings was shown that the inner surface residual strain was negative at mucosa-submucosa and inner muscle layers and was positive at outer muscle layer, whereas the outer surface residual strain was negative at the mucosa-submucosa layer and positive at the inner and outer muscle layers. For the separated different layered rings, the inner residual strain was negative and outer residual strain was positive; however, the absolute values did not differ (P>0.1). In conclusion, it is possible to microsurgically separate the oesophagus into three layers, i.e., mucosa-submucosa, inner muscle and outer muscle layers, the residual strain differ between the layers, and the residual strain distribution was more uniform after the layers were separated.  相似文献

The division of chloroplasts (plastids) is critical for the viability of photosynthetic eukaryotes. Previously we reported on the chloroplast division apparatus, which consists of inner and outer double or triple rings (PD rings). Chloroplasts are assumed to arise from bacterial endosymbionts, while bacterial division is instigated by a bacterial cytokinesis Z-ring protein (FtsZ). Here we present immunofluorescence and electron-microscopic evidence of chloroplast division via complex machinery involving the FtsZ and PD rings in the higher plant Pelargonium zonale Ait. Prior to invagination, the FtsZ protein was attached to a ring at the stromal division site. Following formation of the FtsZ ring, the inner stromal and outer cytosolic PD rings appeared, signifying the initiation of invagination. The FtsZ ring and the PD rings were found at the leading edge of chloroplast constriction throughout division. During chloroplast division, neither the FtsZ nor the inner rings changed width, but the volume of the outer ring gradually increased. We suggest that the FtsZ ring determines the division region, after which the inner and outer PD rings are formed as a lining for the FtsZ ring. With the outer ring providing the motivating force, the FtsZ and inner PD rings ultimately decompose to their base components.  相似文献

Using an immunofluorescence technique on ovarian sections, zona-immunoreactive components were detected in the cytoplasm of the oocyte from the beginning of its growth, when it is surrounded by only a thin squamous follicular cell layer, up to the end of its growth. In parallel with oocyte growth, the staining intensity decreased in the ooplasm. No staining was observed in the cytoplasm of the granulosa cells during normal follicular development in adult cyclic females. However, staining of the granulosa cells was observed at some stages of follicular development in immature females. This staining was especially evident in the ovaries of immature females (22 or 26 days old) stimulated with PMSG. In addition, the staining of the granulosa cells was consistently observed in ovaries showing an abnormal histology. Increased staining of the zona at its outer and inner regions could be distinguished in normal follicles, but when staining occurred on the granulosa cells no such pattern was observed over the zona matrix. These studies indicate that the oocyte itself but not the granulosa cells elaborates the native immunogenic material of the zona pellucida. The administration of PMSG at particular stages of ovarian differentiation interferes with follicular development leading to an abnormal extracellular assembly of the zona and its degradation (phagocytosis) by the surrounding granulosa cells.  相似文献

Summary A method for preparation of biological specimens for electron probe X-ray microanalysis is described, that aims at retaining the original elemental distribution within the tissue at the cellular level. The tissue is without any chemical fixation, quench-frozen, and 16-m sections are prepared with a conventional cryomicrotome, transferred to a carbon specimen holder and freeze-dried.Adjacent serial sections, collected on glass slides and stained with various histological procedures, are used to correlate the data obtained by X-ray microanalysis with other histochemical information on the same cell or tissue.To demonstrate the possibilities of the method, sections of the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris were analyzed. In the chloragogenous cells, high concentrations of Ca, Zn and P were found. The inner and outer muscle layer show slightly different properties, both with regard to elemental composition and to myofibrillar ATPase activity.  相似文献

The formation of the plastid-dividing ring (PD ring) and mitochondrion-dividing ring (MD ring) was studied in a highly synchronous culture of the unicellular red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae. The timing and the order of formation of the MD and PD rings were determined by observing organelles around the onset of their division, using transmission electron microscopy. In  C. merolae, there is one chloroplast and one mitochondrion per cell, and the shape of the chloroplast changes sequentially from acorn-like, to round, to trapezoidal, to peanut-shaped, in that order, during the early stage of chloroplast division. None of the cells with acorn-shaped or round chloroplasts contained organelles with PD rings or MD rings, while all of the cells with peanut-shaped chloroplasts contained organelles with both PD rings and MD rings. In cells with peanut-shaped chloroplasts, the PD and MD rings were double ring structures, with an outer ring located on the cytoplasmic face of the outer membrane of the organelle, and an inner ring located in the matrix beneath the inner membrane. These results suggested that the double ring structures of the PD ring and the MD ring form when chloroplasts are trapezoidal in shape. Detailed three-dimensional observation of cells with trapezoidal chloroplasts revealed the following steps in the formation of the double ring structures of the PD and MD rings: (i) the inner ring of the PD ring forms first, followed by the outer ring; (ii) then the MD ring forms and becomes visible; (iii) when the double ring structures of the two rings have formed, the microbody then moves from its remote location to the plane of division of the mitochondrion and contraction of the PD and MD rings commences. These steps were also confirmed by computer-aided three-dimensional reconstruction of the images from serial thin sections. This study reveals the order of formation of the double ring structures of the PD and MD rings, and the behavior of the microbody around the onset of division of plastids and mitochondria. The results also provide the first evidence that the inner PD ring is not a tension element formed by the contractile pressure but a definite structure, independent of the outer ring. It has been shown previously that dendritic branching in cardiorespiratory and locomotor brain areas can be attenuated with exercise training (ET). It was not known whether this process was reversible. Twenty-three (n = 23) male Sprague-Dawley rats were individually caged and divided into two groups: untrained (UN; n = 11) and detrained (DTR; n = 12). DTR were provided with a running wheel at 21 days of age and exercised spontaneously. After 120 days (70 days of ET followed by 50 days of detraining), ET indexes were obtained, including maximal oxygen uptake, percent body fat, resting heart rate, and heart weight-to-body weight ratios. The brain was processed according to a modified Golgi-Cox procedure. Impregnated neurons from the periaqueductal gray (PAG), posterior hypothalamic area (PH), nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS), and cuneiform nucleus (CfN) were examined in coronal sections. Neurons were traced using a camera lucida technique and analyzed using the Sholl concentric ring analysis of dendritic branching. t-Tests compared the mean number of intersections per neuron by grouping inner rings, outer rings, and total number of intersections per animal. There were no significant differences between UN and DTR in PH, PAG, CfN, and NTS in the inner rings, outer rings, and total number of intersections per animal. A separate group of animals was used to show that a training effect in the CfN and NTS was present at 56 days of ET. Our results show that dendritic attenuation resulting from 70 days of ET in PH, PAG, CfN, and NTS is completely reversed with 50 days of detraining.  相似文献

The time courses of chloroplast and mitochondrial division and the morphological changes in the plastid-dividing ring (PD ring) and mitochondrion-dividing ring (MD ring) during chloroplast and mitochondrial division were studied in Cyanidioschyzon merolae De Luca, Taddei and Varano. To accomplish this, chloroplast and cell division of living cells were continuously video-recorded under light microscopy, and the morphological changes in the PD and MD rings were analyzed quantitatively and three-dimensionally by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Under the light microscope, the diameters of the chloroplast and the cell decreased at uniform velocities, the speed depending on the temperature. To study in detail the sequential morphological change of the mitochondrion in M phase and the contractile mechanism in the divisional planes of the chloroplast and the mitochondrion, we observed the PD and MD rings, which are believed to promote contraction, under TEM, using the diameter of the chloroplast as an index of the time. Three PD rings (an outer PD ring on the cytoplasmic face of the outer envelope, a middle PD ring in the intermembrane space, and an inner PD ring on the stromal face of the inner envelope) were clearly observed, but only the outer MD ring could be observed. The PD ring started to contract soon after it formed, while the contraction of the MD ring did not occur immediately after formation, but was delayed until the contraction of the PD ring was almost complete. Once the MD ring began to contract, the rate of decrease of its circumference was 4 times as high as that of the PD ring. As the outer PD and MD rings contracted, they grew thicker and maintained a constant volume, while the thickness of the inner PD ring did not change and its volume decreased at a constant rate with contraction. In the early stage of contraction, the widths of the three PD rings increased in order, from the outer to the inner ring. With contraction, their widths changed at different rates until they came to have much the same width. In cross-section, the MD ring was wider where it was next to the chloroplast than at the opposite side, adjacent to the nucleus in the early stage of contraction. By the late stage, the widths of the two sides became equal. In our observations, the microbody elongated along the outer MD ring and touched the outer PD ring during contraction of the PD and MD rings. These results clearly revealed differences between the mode of contraction of the outer, middle, and inner PD rings, and between the PD and the MD rings. They also revealed the coordinated widening of the three PD rings, and suggested that the microbody plays a role in the contraction of the PD and MD rings. The present study attempted for the first time to explore the importance of photoperiod in the regulation of seasonal ovarian functions in any subtropical major carp. Adult Indian major carp Catla catla were transferred to a long photoperiod (LP; LD 16:8) or a short photoperiod (SP; LD 8:16) for 30 days on 4 dates corresponding to the beginnings of 4 reproductive phases in an annual cycle, and responsiveness of the ovary was evaluated by comparison with the gonadal weight (I(G)), relative number of developing oocytes, serum levels of vitellogenin, and the activity of 2 important steroidogenic enzymes, that is, Delta(5)3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and 17.beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, in the ovary of fish in a natural photoperiod. Exposure of fish to LP during the preparatory phase (February-March) resulted in a significant (p < 0.001) increase in the values of vitellogenin and in the activity of both the steroidogenic enzymes but not in the ovarian weight and in the relative number of different stages of oocytes. A more stimulatory influence of LP was noted during the prespawning phase (April-May), when precocious maturation of ovary was evident from a significant (p < 0.001) rise in the values of each studied features of ovarian functions. However, no ovarian response was found when the fish were transferred to LP during the spawning (July-August) and the postspawning (September-October) phases. On the other hand, the SP was found to have an inhibitory influence on ovarian growth and maturation during the prespawning and the spawning phases or to have no influences on ovarian functions during the preparatory and the postspawning phases of an annual cycle. The results of our study provide the first evidence that photoperiod per se plays an important role in the seasonal maturation of ovary in a subtropical freshwater major carp.  相似文献

A variant strain that produced spores lacking exosporium was isolated from a culture of Bacillus megaterium QM-B1551. Two additional spore morphotypes were obtained from the parent and variant strains by chemical removal of the complex of coat and outer membrane. Among the four morphotype spores, heat resistance did not correlate with total water content, wet density, refractive index, or dipicolinate or cation content, but did correlate with the volume ratio of protoplast to protoplast plus cortex. The divestment of integument layers exterior to the cortex had little influence on heat resistance. Moreover, the divestment did not change the response of either the parent or the variant spores to various germination-initiating agents, except for making the spores susceptible to germination by lysozyme. The primary permeability barrier to glucose for the intact parent and variant spores was found to be the outer membrane, whereas the barrier for the divested spores was the inner membrane.  相似文献

The timing and manner of disassembly of the apparatuses for chloroplast division (the plastid-dividing ring; PD ring) and mitochondrial division (the mitochondrion-dividing ring; MD ring) were investigated in the red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae De Luca, Taddei and Varano. To do this, we synchronized cells both at the final stage of and just after chloroplast and mitochondrial division, and observed the rings in three dimensions by transmission electron microscopy. The inner (beneath the stromal face of the inner envelope) and middle (in the inter-membrane space) PD rings disassembled completely, and disappeared just before completion of chloroplast division. In contrast, the outer PD and MD rings (on the cytoplasmic face of the outer envelope) remained in the cytosol between daughter organelles after chloroplast and mitochondrial division. The outer rings started to disassemble and disappear from their surface just after organelle division, initially clinging to the outer envelopes at both edges before detaching. The results suggest that the two rings inside the chloroplast disappear just before division, and that this does not interfere with completion of division, while the outer PD and MD rings function throughout and complete chloroplast and mitochondrial division. Regional distribution of angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) in the rat kidney was studied. The ACE activities in the inner cortex and outer medulla were about 10 and 5 times those in the outer cortex, respectively. The activity in the inner medulla or papilla was much the same as that in the outer cortex. Immunofluorescence was greatest in the proximal tubules in the inner cortex, while the outer medulla and the inner medulla or papilla showed a weak fluorescence. The brush border membranes isolated from the inner cortex also possessed about 10 times the ACE activity seen in the outer cortex. The results indicate that the major source of renal ACE is not the proximal convoluted tubules in the outer cortex, but rather the brush border membranes of proximal tubules in the inner cortex. The contribution of ACE in the inner cortex would therefore be predominant.  相似文献
