A model of nitrogen uptake and distribution is presented whichdescribes these processes in relation to the amount of availablesoil nitrate and the rate of plant growth. Nitrogen uptake iseither sink or source limited. Sink limitation is based on maximumN-concentrations of plant compartments. The N-uptake model iscombined with a photosynthesis model based on the productivity-nitrogenrelationship at the single-leaf level. The model is parameterizedusing cauliflower as an example crop. Applied to an independentdata set, the combined model was able to predict leaf, stemand inflorescence nitrogen concentrations with correlation coefficientsbetween predicted and simulated values of 0.89, 0.66 and 0.86,respectively. The influence of nitrogen supply and light intensityon leaf nitrate-N could also be predicted with good accuracy(r2 = 0.87). Dry matter production based on the productivity-Nrelationship and the partitioning into leaf, stem and inflorescencewas also reproduced satisfactorily (r2 = 0.91, 0.93 and 0.92,respectively). The development of vertical canopy gradients of leaf N has beenregarded as an adaptation to the light gradient that helps tomaximize canopy photosynthesis. In this study we report thedynamics of vertical leaf N distribution during vegetative growthof wheat in response to changes in N availability and sowingdensity. The question of to what extent the observed verticalleaf N distribution maximized canopy photosynthesis was addressedwith a leaf layer model of canopy photosynthesis that integratesN-dependent leaf photosynthesis according to the canopy lightand leaf N distribution. Plants were grown hydroponically attwo amounts of N, supplied in proportion to calculated growthrates. Photosynthesis at light saturation correlated with leafN. The vertical leaf N distribution was associated with thegradient of absorbed light. The leaf N profile changed duringcrop development and was responsive to N availability. At highN supply, the leaf N profiles were constant during crop development. At low N supply, the leaf N profiles fluctuated between moreuniform and steep distributions. These changes were associatedwith reduced leaf area expansion and increasing N remobilizationfrom lower leaf layers. The distribution of leaf N with respectto the gradient of absorbed irradiance was close to the theoreticaloptimum maximizing canopy photosynthesis. Sensitivity analysisof the photosynthesis model suggested that plants maintain anoptimal vertical leaf N distribution by balancing the capacityfor photosynthesis at high and low light. Simulated mixed swards of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL. cv. S23) and white clover (Trifolium repens L. cv. S100)were grown from seed under a constant 10°C day/8°C nighttemperature regime and their growth, and carbon and nitrogeneconomies examined. The swards received a nutrient solution, every second day, which contained either high (220 µgg–1) or low (40 µg g–1) nitrate N. The High-N swards had rates of canopy photosynthesis and drymatter production (over the linear phase of growth) similarto those previously shown by mixed swards at high temperature. The Low-N swards grew more slowly; canopy photosynthesis, ata given LAI, was similar to that at High-N but lower LAI's weresustained. Clover increased its contribution to total carbonuptake and total dry weight throughout the period in the Low-Ntreatment and, despite the fact that grass took up most of theavailable nitrate, clover maintained a consistently higher Ncontent by virtue of N2-fixation. At High-N, grass dominated throughout the measurement period.Earlier, when plants grew as spaced individuals, clover grewless well than grass, but once the canopy was closed it hada similar relative growth rate and thus maintained a steadyproportion of total sward dry weight. It is proposed that earlyin the development of the crop, leaf area production is thelimiting factor for growth, and that in this respect cloveris adversely affected by low temperature relative to grass.Later, as the LAI of the crop builds up, and the canopy becomesfully light intercepting, net canopy photosynthesis plays amore dominant role and here the higher photosynthetic rate perunit leaf area of the clover is crucial. Canopy gross photosynthesis of tall fescue receiving three tofour rates of N fertilization was studied under field conditionsduring three contrasting growing seasons. Under non-limitingN growing conditions, the growing seasons did not have a significanteffect on the maximum canopy gross photosynthesis (canopy grossphotosynthesis at saturating PAR) and the maximum light yield(quantum efficiency of the canopy at low PAR). In the absenceof N fertilization and for a similar LAI, the values of themaximum canopy gross photosynthesis were approximately equalto 70% of those obtained under non-limiting N conditions. Thisresponse of the tall fescue canopy to N concentration is muchsmaller than that reported at the leaf level. The reductionin canopy photosynthetic capacity with no N applied comparedto non-limiting N conditions is much less than the reductionobserved previously in above-ground dry matter accumulation. The effect of N fertilization on above-ground dry matter accumulationis due primarily to changes in C partitioning and the resultingfaster leaf area development and greater light interceptionrather than the effect of N on the canopy photosynthetic capacityper se .Copyright 1993, 1999 Academic Press Festuca arundinacea Schreb., photosynthesis, nitrogen, grass, carbon  相似文献

During vegetative growth, the vertical profile of leaf nitrogen(N) often parallels the profile of light distribution withinthe canopy. This is more advantageous in terms of canopy photosynthesisthan a uniform distribution of leaf N. We investigated the influenceof both reproductive growth and N supply on the profiles ofN and light in canopies of irrigated cotton crops (Gossypiumhirsutum L.). Regular samplings were made from soon after theonset of reproductive growth until crop maturity. Every 2 weeks,a 1 m2sample of the canopy was cut in four successive verticallayers of equal thickness. Leaf area and N concentration (%)in each layer were measured. The vertical N gradient becamemore marked with ongoing reproductive development. It is hypothesizedthat because of the high rate of growth after the onset of reproductivedevelopment and the long duration of this phase compared toother species, the whole canopy photosynthetic benefit thatwould accrue from maintaining the N gradient is likely to beaccentuated. The rate of decline in leaf N concentration ina layer was not related to either the initial concentrationin the leaves nor the boll load within the layer.Copyright 2001Annals of Botany Company Gossypium hirsutum, leaf nitrogen, light profile, nitrogen, nitrogen distribution, remobilization, reproductive growth  相似文献

The C balance of a tall fescue sward grown under different ratesof N fertilization in summer, autumn, and spring was calculatedusing models derived from measurements of shoot growth, canopygross photosynthesis, shoot respiration and of C partitioningto the roots. Under the diverse growing conditions associatedwith the seasons and the N fertilization, C utilization forabove- and below-ground biomass accumulation never exceeded39 and 14% of the canopy gross photosynthesis, respectively.Carbon losses attributed to root respiration and exudation, which were estimated by difference between canopy net photosynthesisand total growth, ranged between 3 and 30% of canopy gross photosynthesis.Seasonal differences in shoot growth could be attributed tothe amount of intercepted radiation, the radiation-use efficiencyand the C partitioning to the roots. The effect of N deficiencyon shoot growth can be attributed to its effects on canopy photosynthesis(principally resulting from changes in intercepted photosyntheticallyactive radiation) and C partitioning. In comparison with theeffect on shoot growth, the effect of the N deficiency on thecanopy gross photosynthesis per unit of light intercepted overthe regrowth cycle was limited. It is concluded that most ofthe effect of N fertilization on shoot growth is due to changesin C partitioning which result in faster leaf area developmentand greater light interception.Copyright 1994, 1999 AcademicPress Tall rescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb., carbon balance, nitrogen, grass, fertilization  相似文献

Measuring the Canopy Net Photosynthesis of Glasshouse Crops   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A null balance method is described for measuring net photosynthesisof mature canopies of cucumber and other protected crops overperiods of 10 min in a single-span glasshouse (c. 9m x 18m inarea). Accuracy of control of the CO2 concentration in the greenhouseatmosphere is within ±10 vpm of the normal ambient level(c. 350 vpm). The amounts of CO2 used in canopy net photosynthesisare measured with linear mass flowmeters accurate to within±0.80g. The total errors incurred in measuring canopynet photosynthesis at an ambient CO2 level are estimated tobe of the order of ± 1·2% in bright light (350W m–2, PAR)and ±3·6% in dull light (100W m–2, PAR). Measurements of the rates of net photosynthesis of a maturecanopy of a cucumber crop were made at near-ambient CO2 concentrationsover a range (0–350 W m–2) of natural light fluxdensities. A model of light absorption and photosynthesis applicableto row crops was used to obtain a net photosynthesis versuslight response curve for the cucumber crop. At a light fluxdensity of 350 W m–2 the fitted value of canopy net photosynthesiswas 2.65 mg CO2 m–2s–1 (equivalent to over 95 kgCO2 ha–1h–1). The results are discussed in relationto the need for CO2 supplements to avoid depletion in both ventilatedand unventilated glasshouses during late spring and summer. Dynamic Model of Leaf Photosynthesis with Acclimation to Light and Nitrogen   总被引:16,自引:3,他引:16
A simple model of photosynthesis in a mature C3leaf is described, based on a non-rectangular hyperbola: the model allows the high-lightasymptote of that equation (Pmax) to respond dynamically tolight and nitrogen. This causes the leaf light response equationto acclimate continuously to the current conditions of lightand N nutrition, which can vary greatly within a crop canopy, and through a growing season, with important consequences forgross production. Predictions are presented for the dynamicsof acclimation, acclimated and non-acclimated photosyntheticrates are compared, and the dependence of leaf properties onlight and N availability is explored. There is good correspondenceof predictions with experimental results at the leaf level. The model also provides a mechanism for a down regulation ofphotosynthesis in response to increased carbon dioxide concentrations, whose magnitude will depend on conditions, particularly of nitrogennutrition.Copyright 1998 Annals of Botany Company Leaf, photosynthesis, hyperbola, model, C3, acclimation, light, nitrogen.

Structure of forest canopies as related to their primary productivity   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Some structural features of forest canopy were analysed in relationto their role in photosynthetic production by forest communitieswhich are thought to produce more organic matter than herbaceouscommunities under the same environment. 1) Leaf area density was found to be much smaller in forestthan in herbaceous canopies. 2) Light extinction in forest canopy followed the BEER-LAMBERT'Slaw as was found for herbaceous canopy, though the coefficientof light extinction (K) was relatively small in the former. 3) A geometrical model was proposed to account for the smallvalue of K and the resultant large leaf area index, based onthe characteristically clustered distribution of tree leavesin forest canopy. 4) Stratification in forest community was interpreted as theuneven vertical distribution of leaf area density. 5) Deterioration of leaf functions, such as photosynthesis andrespiration, toward the bottom of forest canopy was noticed. 6) An attempt to estimate total canopy photosynthesis is presentedtaking this into consideration. 7) A new method for estimating total canopy respiration is proposedand discussed. 1Contributions from JIBP-PT No. 36. The rates of canopy and individual leaf photosynthesis and 14Cdistribution for three temperate forage grasses Lolium perennecv. S24, L. perenne cv. Reveille and Festuc'a arundinacea cv.SI70 were determined in the field during a summer growth period.Canopy photosynthesis declined as the growth period progressed, reflecting a decline in the photosynthetic capacity of successiveyoungest fully expanded leaves. The decline in the maximum photosyntheticcapacity of the canopies was correlated with a decline in theirquantum efficiencies at low irradiance. Changes in canopy structureresulted in changes in canopy net photosynthesis and dark respiration. No clear relationships between changes in the environment andchanges in canopy net photosynthesis and dark respiration wereestablished. The relative distributions of 14C in the shootsof the varieties gave a good indication of the amount of drymatter per ground area in the varieties.  相似文献

Small communities of S24 ryegrass were grown under supplementarylights in a glasshouse at 20°C, and abundantly suppliedwith a complete nutrient solution containing 300 p.p.m. of nitrogen, until they had a leaf area index of 5 and fully interceptedthe light. Half were then given a solution containing only 3p.p.m. of nitrogen (LN) while the rest were kept at 300 p.p.m.(HN). The LN plants had a rate of single leaf photosynthesis lowerthan that of the HN plants at all but the lowest light intensities(33 per cent lower at the saturating irradiance of 170 W m–2).Similarly, the LN communities had rates of canopy gross photosynthesis(Psc) markedly lower than those of the HN communities. A comparisonof the observed rates of Psc with those predicted by a mathematicalmodel of canopy photosynthesis indicated that it was the effectof nitrogen on single leaf photosynthesis, rather than differencesbetween the communities in leaf area, which led to the observeddifferences in Psc. The superiority of the HN communities in terms of Psc was partlyoffset by a higher rate of respiration so that they only exceededthe LN communities in terms of canopy net photosynthesis atirradiances in excess of 180 W m–2, and produced only15 per cent more total dry matter. Nevertheless, the HN plantsdirected less of that dry matter into root and more into topsso that they came to possess twice the weight of live laminae, and the HN communities twice the leaf area, of their nitrogendeficient counterparts. The rate of net photosynthesis (P) of whole plant stands oftomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), cucumber (Cucumis sativusL.) and sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) was measured in sixlong-term experiments in large greenhouses under normal operatingconditions and CO2-concentrations between 200 and 1200 µmolmol-1. The objective was to quantify the responses to lightand carbon dioxide and to obtain data sets for testing simulationmodels. The method of measuring canopy photosynthesis involvedan accurate estimation of the greenhouse CO2 balance, usingnitrous oxide (N2O) as tracer gas to determine, on-line, theexchange rate between greenhouse and outside air. The estimatedrelative error in the observed P was about ± 10%, exceptthat higher relative errors could occur under particular conditions. A regression equation relating P to the photosynthetically activeradiation, the CO2 concentration and the leaf area index explained83-91% of the variance. The main canopy photosynthesis characteristicscalculated with the fitted regression equations were: canopyPmax 5-9 g m-2 h-1 CO2 uptake; ratio Pmax/LAI 1·5-3 gm-2 h-1; light compensation point 32-86 µmol s-1 m-2;light use efficiency (quantum yield) at low light 0·06-0·10µmol µmol-1 and CO2 compensation point 18-54 µmolmol-1. The results were related to the prevailing conditions.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Canopy photosynthesis, Capsicum annuum L., carbon dioxide, CO2, CO2 balance, CO2 use efficiency, cucumber, Cucumis sativus L., glasshouse, greenhouse, light use efficiency, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., sweet pepper, tomato, tracer gas  相似文献

Several leaf photosynthesis models were developed from wellcontrolled experiments in growth chambers. However, only a fewhave been validated under greenhouse conditions for their quantitativeand qualitative adequacy. In this paper, rates of net photosynthesisfor a tomato crop (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) were measuredin a semi-commercial greenhouse (615 m3) for a significant timeperiod. Concomitant measurements of climatic conditions andLAI were used for simulation of net photosynthesis using theTOMGRO model which integrates Acock's model for photosynthesiscalculations. From simulations and from sensitivity analysis, the prediction of net photosynthesis appeared to be very sensitiveto the quantum use efficiency. The Acock model with originalparameters underestimated the net photosynthesis rate, but anincrease in the quantum use efficiency by 10% gave a good fit.In an effort to generalize the validity of the model, a residualanalysis was performed and showed a systematic bias relatedto light intensity intercepted by the canopy. The Marquardtalgorithm was used to adjust our data to the model but did noteliminate residual heterogeneity of variance with new parametervalues. On the basis of collected data, the criteria of goodnessof fit used showed that the photosynthesis model is inadequatein describing the CO2-balance of the greenhouse agrosystem. However, it was determined that it could be used as a submodelwithin a more complex model for predicting growth and development.Copyright 1999 Annals of Botany Company Greenhouse, CO2-balance, photosynthesis, TOMGRO model, Acock's model, residuals, tomato Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.  相似文献

Effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment to a level above 600 parts10–6 on leaf and canopy gas exchange characteristics wereinvestigated in Trifolium repens, using an open system for gasexchange measurement. The cuvettes of the system served as growthchambers, allowing continuous measurement in a semi-controlledenvironment of ±350 and ±600 parts 10–6CO2, respectively. Carbon balance data were compared with cropyield and effects on the canopy level were compared with measuredleaf responses of photosynthesis and stomatal behaviour. Photosyntheticstimulation by high CO2 was stronger at the canopy level (103%on average) than for leaves (90% in full light), as a consequenceof accelerated foliage area development. The latter increasedabsolute water consumption by 16%, despite strong stomatal closure. The overall result was a 63% improvement in canopy water useefficiency (WUE), while leaf WVE increased almost 3-fold insaturating light. The stomatal response was such that, whilethe internal CO2 concentration in the leaf, ch increased withrising atmospherical CO2 concentration, ca, ci/ca was somewhatdecreased. Total canopy resistance, Rc, was generally lowerat high CO2 levels, despite higher leaf resistance. Higher canopyCO2 loss at night and faster light extinction in a larger-sizedhigh CO2 canopy were major drawbacks which prevented a furtherincrease in dry matter production (the harvest index was increasedby a factor 1.83). Simulated mixed swards of Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) cv. S23 and White clover (Trifolium repens L.) cv. S100were grown from seed under a constant 20 °C day/15 °Cnight temperature regime and their growth and carbon economyexamined. The swards received a nutrient solution daily, whichcontained either High (220 mg l1) or Low (10 mg l–1)nitrate N. Rates of canopy photosynthesis and respiration, and final drymatter yields were similar in the two treatments although theproportions of grass and clover differed greatly. The Low-Nswards were made up largely of clover. The grass plants in theseswards had high root: shoot ratios and low relative photosyntheticrates – both signs of N deficiency – and were clearlyunable to compete with the vigorously growing Low-N clover plants. These had higher relative growth rates and dry matter yieldsthan their High-N counterparts. In the High-N swards clovercontributed around 50 per cent to the sward dry weight throughoutthe measurement period despite having a smaller proportion ofits dry weight in photosynthetic tissue (laminae) than grassover much of it. The latter was compensated for, initially bya higher specific leaf area than grass, and later by a higherphotosynthetic rate per unit leaf weight. The results are discussedin relation to observed declines in the clover content of swardsafter the addition of nitrogen fertilizer in the field. The Effect of Temperature on the Photosynthesis of Ryegrass Canopies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In bright light, the rate of gross photosynthesis of ryegrasscanopies increased with increasing temperature between 10 and25 °C, in keeping with an increase in the photosynthesisof their constituent leaves. The increase in canopy gross photosynthesisoccurred irrespective of the leaf area index, which would affectthe proportion of the leaves in bright light. Because the responseof gross photosynthesis to temperature was similar to that ofrespiration, net photosynthesis also increased with temperature, irrespective of the relative magnitude of the two processes. However, these increases in photosynthesis were observed whilethe saturation deficit of water vapour was kept small (lessthan 3 g m–3). The photosynthesis of both leaves and canopieswas reduced when measured at a greater saturation deficit; indicatingthat the increasing saturation deficit, which frequently accompaniesincreasing temperature in the field, may obscure the effectof temperature on photosynthesis. Lack of control of saturationdeficit as measurement temperature is increased may explainwhy some workers have failed to detect a positive effect oftemperature on photosynthesis. Effects of Nitrogen Nutrition on Photosynthesis in Cd-treated Sunflower Plants   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Increased nitrogen supply stimulates plant growth and photosynthesis.Since it was shown that heavy metals may cause deficienciesof essential nutrients in plants the potential reversal of cadmiumtoxicity by increased N nutrition was investigated. The effectson photosynthesis of low Cd (0, 0.5, 2 or 5 mmol m-3) combinedwith three N treatments (2, 7.5 or 10 mol m-3) were examinedin young sunflower plants. Chlorophyll fluorescence quenchingparameters were determined at ambient CO2and at 100 or 800 µmolquanta m-2 s-1. The vitality index (Rfd) decreased approx. three-timesin response to 5 mmol m-3Cd, at 2 and 10 mol m-3N. The maximumphotochemical efficiency of PSII reaction centres (Fv/ Fm) wasnot influenced by Cd or N treatment. The highest Cd concentrationdecreased quantum efficiency of PSII electron transport (II)by 30%, at 2 and 10 mol m-3N, mostly due to increased closureof PSII reaction centres (qP). Photosynthetic oxygen evolutionrates at saturating CO2were decreased in plants treated with5 mmol m-3Cd, at all N concentrations. The results indicatethat Cd treatment affected the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP)regeneration capacity of the Calvin cycle more than other processes. At the same time, the amounts of soluble and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphatecarboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) protein increased with Cd treatment.Decreased photosynthesis, but substantially increased Rubiscocontent, in sunflower leaves under Cd stress indicate that asignificant amount of Rubisco protein is not active in photosynthesisand could have another function. It is shown that optimal nitrogennutrition decreases the inhibitory effects of Cd in young sunflowerplants. Microswards of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were grownin controlled environments at 10/7, 18/13 and 26/21 °C day/nighttemperatures. The vertical distribution of leaves of differentages and their rates of 14CO2-uptake in situ were studied. Extending petioles carried the laminae of young leaves throughthe existing foliage. A final position was reached within 1/4to 1/3 of the time between unfolding and death. Newly unfoldedleaves had higher rates of 14CO2-uptake per leaf area than olderones at the same height in the canopy. At higher temperatures, the decrease with age was faster. However, the light-photosynthesisresponse of leaves which were removed from different heightsin the canopy varied much less with leaf age than did the ratesof 14CO2-uptake in situ. The comparison of the rates of 14CO2-uptake in situ with thelight-photosynthesis response curves suggests that young leavesreceive more light than older ones at the same height in thecanopy. This would imply that young white clover leaves havethe ability to reach canopy positions having a favourable lightenvironment. This ability may improve the chances of survivalof white clover in competition with other species. To better understand source-sink interactions, this work focusedon the influence of fruit number on leaf area and photosyntheticactivity in cantaloupe. To this end, flowers were removed over2 years on two Charentais cultivars to obtain single-fruit plantsand plants with an unrestricted fruit load (which set two tofive fruits and constituted control plants). At the whole plantscale, net photosynthesis was reduced by about 30% under highfruit load. At the leaf scale, a submodel of stomatal conductancewas fitted to the data and was included in a rectangular hyperbolamodel of leaf photosynthesis. Maximum leaf net photosynthesisaveraged 14.83 µmol CO2m-2s-1at 1000 µmol quantam-2s-1. Light use efficiency was not affected by fruit loadand equalled 0.040 mol CO2mol-1quanta. Leaf area of plants withunrestricted fruit load decreased after 24 days from pollination, while the leaf area of single-fruit plants was still increasing. The decrease was due to production of fewer new leaves per day, whereas the number of senescent leaves and the size of individualleaves were not affected by the treatment. Under high fruitload, cultivar Galoubet developed a larger projected leaf areathan cultivar Talma. Thus it is concluded that: (1) large cantaloupefruits may divert a large amount of assimilates away from, andgrow at the expense of, the canopy; and (2) photosynthesis ofthe canopy was lowered because leaf area was reduced whereasphotosynthetic rate of leaves was not altered.Copyright 1998Annals of Botany Company.
