The jaws of Limnognathia maerski, Micrognathozoa, were investigated with light- and scanning electron microscopy. The study yielded several new structures and sclerites, including the ventral part of main jaw, the pharyngeal lamellae, the manus, the dorsal and ventral fibularium teeth, and a reinterpretation of the fibularium compartmentalization. Furthermore, it was shown that several jaw elements are composed of densely packed rods. Comparison with Rotifera and Gnathostomulida suggested that the micrognathozoan main jaw is homologous with the rotifer incus and the gnathostomulid articularium and that the pseudophalangids (the ventral jaws) and their associated sclerites correspond to the rotifer mallei. These results imply that Micrognathozoa is more closely related to Rotifera than to Gnathostomulida.  相似文献

A new gnathostomulid genus and species, Chirognathia dracula gen. et spec. nov., is described from intertidal surf grass (Phyllospadix) rhizomes on high-energy coasts of Vancouver Island (Canada) and Bodega Bay (California). The characteristics of the reproductive system place the new genus in Bursovaginoidea-Scleroperalia and features of the mouth parts (except for the absence of a jugum) assign it to the family Gnathostomulidae. Chirognathia nov. gen. is characterized by a delicate, transverse shield-shaped basal plate and by jaws with three tooth rows, of which the median appears as a bundle.  相似文献

Summary The fine structure of the spiral ciliary receptor of three gnathostomulid species is described. Each receptor bears a single cilium — with 9+2 axoneme, basal body and accessory centriole — rolled up in an internal cavity. Spherical and annular cavities are construed as two different types of spiral ciliary receptor. Relations to presumptive photoreceptors in other lower Bilateria and considerations of possible function of these gnathostomulid receptors are discussed.  相似文献

The degree of similarity between the 'pseudobranch type' and 'chloride type' cells in the pseudobranch of bass ( Dicentrachus labrax (L)), smelt ( Osmerus esperlangus ) and rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdneri ) was studied. The pseudobranch of bass and smelt contains two specialised cell types commonly known as 'chloride type' and 'pseudobranch type' cells, whereas rainbow trout only possess the latter type. 'Pseudobranch type' cells are characterised by the orderly arrangement of parallel tubules around their closely packed mitochondria. 'Chloride type' cells are identified by their highly branched tubular network, randomly distributed mitochondria, and the presence of an apical pit. Although ultra-structural changes were noted under osmotic stress, the 'chloride type' and 'pseudobranch type' cells remained distinguishable from each other and gave no reason to suggest that they were different forms of the same cell type. It was concluded that the two are distinct cell types, performing different, though possibly related, functions.  相似文献

A total of 99 clinical isolates of metallo-ß-lactamase-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa collected in Japan between 1998 and 2001 were studied for their susceptibilities to carbapenem agents and corresponding oprD gene mutations. The OprD sequence of each strain was grouped into two major classes, based on the pattern of alterations. Eighty strains (80.8%) were so-called 'full length type', whose OprD proteins were fully encoded. The remaining 19 strains (19.2%) were so-called 'defective type', which possessed deletions or major alterations that might cause conformational changes in the OprD porin protein. The changes in 'defective type' strains led to 15-, 17- and 23-fold increases in the geometric mean MIC for imipenem, meropenem and biapenem compared with 'full length type' strains, respectively. 'Full length type' strains were further classified into six carbapenem susceptible types with the exception of four carbapenem-resistant subtypes with additional amino acid substitutions at D43, G183, R154, G314, G316. However, 'defective type' strains were classified into four types as follows: 10 strains which contained a stop codon within the coding region; six strains which contained IS; one strain with a short deletion near the C-terminal domain; and two strains without a stop codon in the sequenced region. Western blot analysis using OprD antibody showed that binding abilities of OprD proteins against 'full length type' strains were normal, whereas those against 'defective type' strains were lost without exception. These results indicate that OprD structure and antimicrobial activities for carbapenem agents proved to be highly correlated in P. aeruginosa  相似文献

Ultrastructure of microhairs is described for 17 species of Poaceae, involving four subfamilies and the 'chloridoid', 'panicoid' and 'Enneapogon' morphological types. The plasma membrane invaginations known as partitioning membranes implicated in salt secretion were found in the basal cells of only some of the 'chloridoid type' microhairs. They were absent from 'panicoid type' microhairs, but present in the cap cells of the 'Enneapogon type'. Characteristics common to known secretory tissues, however, were observed in all microhairs studied, implying secretory activity in all the morphological types.  相似文献

The phylogeny of the obscure metazoan phylum Gnathostomulida has previously only been addressed with cladistic analyses of morphological data. In the present study DNA sequence data from four molecular loci, including 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, histone H3 and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, are added to a revised morphological data matrix. The data set represents 23 gnathostomulid species that are analyzed under direct optimization using parsimony as the optimality criterion. The results obtained from analyzing the four molecular loci and combined morphological and molecular data under different parameter sets are generally very congruent, and differ only on minor points. The results clearly support gnathostomulid monophyly, as well as the basal division of Gnathostomulida into Filospermoidea and Bursovaginoidea. Filospermoidea were represented by species of Haplognathia and Cosmognathia, and generic monophyly is supported for both groups. Within Bursovaginoidea, Conophoralia (= Austrognathiidae) and Scleroperalia appear as sister groups. Monophyly of Mesognathariidae was confirmed as well, whereas the relationships between species of Gnathostomulidae and Onychognathiidae were contradicted by the molecular data when compared to morphological observations. ©The Willi Hennig Society 2006.  相似文献

The purified cytochrome b-c1 complex of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides has two b cytochromes distinguishable by optical, thermodynamic and electron paramagnetic resonance criteria (gz values are approximately equal to 3.75 and approximately equal to 3.4). EPR features typical of a Rieske iron sulfur cluster (g values of 2.03 1.90 and 1.81) and a c1 type cytochrome (g approximately equal to 3.4) were also observed. The b and c1 cytochromes were individually purified from the complex. The cytochrome c1 retained its native EPR spectrum. The b cytochrome lost over 90% of the intensity from the 'b566 type' heme site (g approximately equal to 3.75), while the 'b561 type' heme site (g approximately equal to 3.4) retained its native EPR spectrum.  相似文献

The Japanese Ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis Temminck & Schlegel is the sole representative of the salmoniform family Plecoglossidae. The Ayu is remarkable for its dentition which in adults comprises groups of diagonally arranged comb-like teeth in the outer tissue of the jaws. In juveniles (below 63 mm SL) the teeth are attached normally to the jaws. The transition of tooth form is correlated with a switch from zooplanktivory to algal or aufwuchs grazing. The present study follows the development of the teeth, jaws, oral cavity ethmoid and suspensorial elements in specimens ranging in size from 41–70 mm SL. The possible mode of function of the adult dentition is discussed. Comparisons are made with the jaws of other salmoniform fishes and a suite of supposed apomorphic characters are identified which are also shared with certain genera of the family Osmeridae, thus supporting the ideas of others that the Osmeridae is a paraphyletic assemblage.  相似文献

The design of minimum-weight structures that retain their integrity under dynamic loading regimes has long challenged engineers. One solution to this problem found in both human and biological design is the optimization of weight and strength by hollowing a structure and replacing its inner core with supportive struts. In animals, this design is observed in sand dollar test, avian beak, and the cancellous bone of tetrapod limbs. Additionally, within the elasmobranch fishes, mineralized trabeculae (struts) have been reported in the jaws of durophagous myliobatid stingrays (Elasmobranchii: Batoidea), but were believed to be absent in basal members of the batoid clade. This study, however, presents an additional case of batoid trabeculation in the lesser electric ray, Narcine brasiliensis (Torpediniformes). The trabeculae in these species likely play different functional roles. Stingrays use their reinforced jaws to crush bivalves, yet N. brasiliensis feeds by ballistically protruding its jaws into the sediment to capture polychaetes. In N. brasiliensis, trabeculae are localized to areas likely to experience the highest load: the quadratomandibular jaw joints, hyomandibular-cranial joint, and the thinnest sections of the jaws immediately lateral to the symphyses. However, the supports perform different functions dependent on location. In regions where the jaws are loaded transversely (as in durophagous rays), "load leading" trabeculae distribute compressive forces from the cortex through the lumen of the jaws. In the parasymphyseal regions of the jaws, "truss" trabeculae form cross-braces perpendicular to the long axes of the jaws. At peak protrusion, the jaw arch is medially compressed and the jaw loaded axially such that these trabeculae are positioned to resist buckling associated with excavation forces. "Truss" trabeculae function to maintain the second moment of area in the thinnest regions of the jaws, illustrating a novel function for batoid trabeculation. Thus, this method of structural support appears to have arisen twice independently in batoids and performs strikingly different ecological functions associated with the distribution of extreme loading environments.  相似文献

[3H]Mannose-labeled glycopeptides in the slices after partial hepatectomy were characterized by column chromatography using Sephadex G-50, DE-52 and Con A-Sepharose, and further by digestion with alpha-mannosidase and endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase H. They contained both 'complex type' and 'high-mannose type' oligosaccharides. A higher proportion of 'complex type' oligosaccharides was contained in regenerating liver 24 h after partial hepatectomy than in control. This tendency was increased gradually with time and was most pronounced at 144 h. In our previous studies, the activities of microsomal N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase towards endogenous and exogenous acceptors at 144 h after partial hepatectomy were shown to exceed most prominently that in control. No differences in the oligosaccharides were observed at 240 h when the deficit of liver had been restored. The oligosaccharides of glycopeptides in the incubation media were mostly 'complex type' and the differences between regenerating liver and control were observed only at 144 h. These results suggest that oligosaccharide processing of glycoproteins is regulated at the transfer step of peripheral N-acetylglucosamine to core oligosaccharides 144 h after partial hepatectomy, and that these alterations in oligosaccharides of glycoproteins may be related to hypertrophy and hyperplasia of hepatic cells in liver regeneration.  相似文献

Some of its members have protrusible upper jaws and some do not. Photographs have been taken of two species of Cyprinodontoidei feeding, to discover how they use their jaws, which are protrusible. The anatomy and mechanisms of the jaws of these and of various other Atheriniformes have been studied. The terminology of the kinematics of machines is used in a general discussion of the mechanisms of teleost jaws. A series of compounds combining the naphthylpiperazine and thienopyran scaffolds has been prepared and evaluated for 5-HT reuptake inhibition with 5-HT1D antagonist activity. The design of these compounds has been based on the 'overlapping type' strategy where two pharmacophores are linked in a single molecule. This study investigates the origin of jaws by re-assessing homologies between the oropharyngeal regions of Agnatha and Chondrichthyes. In accordance with classical theory, jaws are interpreted as the most anterior arches of the ventilatory branchial basket. It is proposed that jaws first enlarged for a ventilatory function, i.e. closing the jaws prevented reflux of water through the mouth during forceful expiration. Next, they enlarged further to grasp prey in feeding. As they enlarged, the jaws tilted forward, squeezing the ancestral oral cavity in front of them ('old mouth') into a slit between the jaws and lips. Simultaneously, the anterior part of the pharynx behind the jaws was pulled forward and became a 'new mouth' (the buccal part of the buccopharyngeal cavity of gnathostomes). During the transition to gnamostomes, the premandibular cheeks and lips of the old mouth remained in place, and are represented in ammocoete lampreys, chimaeroids, and sharks. The stages in the evolution of gnathostomes, driven by selection for increasing activity, are modelled as: ancestral vertebrate (with unjointed branchial arches) to early pre-gnathostome (jointed internal arches and stronger ventilation) to late pre-gnadiostome (with mouth-closing, ventilatory 'jaws') to early gnathostome (feeding jaws).  相似文献

The microsporidium Unikaryon polygraphi sp.n., a pathogen of Polygraphus poligraphus in Austria is described based on light microscopic and ultrastructural characteristics. All life stages have isolated nuclei. Sporogony ends with uninucleate single sporoblasts and spores. Mature oval spores measure 2.5–3.0 μm × 1.0–1.5 μm. The larger spores (3 × 1.5 μm) belong to the `early spore type' with a polar filament coiled in five turns and the smaller spores (2.5 × 1 μm) with polar filament coiled in 6/7 turns belong to the `environmental spore type'. Columnar cells of the midgut, longitudinal and circular muscles and the secretory part of Malpighian tubules of adult beetles are infected. The jaw apparatus and suspensorium of adult Tetraodontiformes are well adapted to a durophagous feeding habit. Anatomical indicators are the short, stout jaws and a suspensorium in which the quadrate lies in the same vertical plane as the autopalatine. In contrast, the palatoquadrate of larval Tetraodontiformes generally resembles that of larval percomorphs – a more posteriorly positioned quadrate and a slender and long Meckelian cartilage. Among Tetraodontiformes, the Triacanthodidae retain a protrusible upper jaw and a versatile suspensorium. The jaws of the Balistoidei have greater mobility achieved by a reduced autopalatine that has lost its bony contact with the suspensorium. In contrast to the Balistoidei, the beak‐like jaws of the Tetraodontoidei lack individual teeth in the biting part of the jaws. The autopalatine is enlarged, which results in immobilization of the ethmopalatine articulation. The Ostraciidae are exceptional in having the distal part of the autopalatine reduced, while the proximal part remains attached to the suspensorium.  相似文献

Field and flume experiments with modern Nautilus pompilius establish two prerequisites to recognize in situ preservation of fossil cephalopod shells (soft parts were within body chamber in situ at the time of fossilization): occurrence of the upper jaw within the body chamber and the position of jaws within the body chamber. Morphology of shells and jaws in modern and fossil nautiloids is so similar that these prerequisites can be applied for fossil nautiloids and provide implications for ammonoids. The upper jaws of Nautilus start to move at a water velocity of > 0.2 m/s, when the shells are reoriented with the aperture downstream; jaws are therefore unlikely to be secondarily deposited near the shell aperture by bottom currents. The lower jaws, moved at the velocity of > 0.1 m/s, can be deposited around the shell aperture by weak current (0.1–0.2 m/s in velocity), but never enter the inside of body chamber. Neither jaw is likely to be separately and selectively displaced from the inside of the body chamber through scavenging of the soft parts by burrowing infaunal animals. An upper jaw preserved inside the body chamber, together with a lower jaw, is thus a reliable indicator of in situ preservation; a sole lower jaw preserved around the shell aperture is likely to be secondarily deposited. Sedimentary structures inferring rapid burial events and jaw size are useful as additional evidence. Smaller jaws were more likely to be displaced from the body chamber by scavenging by infaunal animals after in situ burial, so that smaller jaws preserved within the body chamber suggest less scavenging. These findings are crucial to interpreting the taphonomic history and palaeo-ecology of fossil cephalopods.  相似文献

The hingement of cytheracean ostracods is a very significant character for taxonomy. In some taxa, adult hinge characters develop abruptly at the last moult, whilst in others no significant change of hingement is observed throughout ontogeny. These two types of hinge development are regarded to as 'leap type' and 'gradual type', respectively. In the five major cytheracean families examined, heterochronic relationships were detected in 11 pairs, i.e. in each family, the adult hinge character of the gradual-type taxon corresponds to the A-1 hingement of the leap-type taxon. Furthermore, these 11 heterochronic pairs can be classified into two categories. The first are 'complete pairs', in which the adult hinge character of gradual-type taxa can be almost completely identified in the A-1 of the counterpart leap-type taxa. The second group are 'incomplete pairs', in which the relationship is not so complete. Palaeontological evidence indicates that in most cases the heterochronic evolution is characterized by paedomorphosis, because the leap type always has the older fossil record than the gradual type in each pair. Most of the gradual-type species of complete pairs originated in the Miocene, while all the gradual-type species of incomplete pairs appeared in and after the Pleistocene. Heterochronic changes must occur universally in the cytheracean ostracods, but the degree of completeness of the heterochronic pair seems to be related to the age of speciation.  相似文献

A study of the tissues of the teeth and jaws in piranhas, using the scanning electron microscope and various techniques of light microscopy, revealed many dental adaptations related to the specialized feeding habits of these carnivorous fishes. The dentition is primarily sectorial, although some anterior teeth may be used in grasping. The scissor-like rows of teeth are maintained by the specialized pattern of tooth replacement. The bones of the jaws and the tooth attachment support the teeth very firmly. In its structural organization, the enameloid covering the teeth closely resembles that on the sectorial teeth of sharks and is adapted to the probable stress patterns set up in biting.  相似文献
