The basin off the Bellingshausen Sea, in contrast to other better known areas such as the Antarctic Peninsula and the Ross and Weddell Seas, has been little investigated due to remoteness and the prevalence of ice for most of the year. The present study focuses on an analysis of polychaetes collected from soft bottoms of this sea and off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula (Gerlache Strait) by means of a box-corer (25 × 25 cm) in two intensive surveys carried out during austral summers of 2002–2003 and 2005–2006 (BENTART-03 and BENTART-06). Three different polychaete assemblages were determined from the classification and ordination analyses of sampling stations based on the Bray-Curtis similarity index. One group of stations encompassed the deep stations from the shelf of the Bellingshausen Sea, the second one the shallower stations from the same area and the third one those stations located near the coast of Peter I Island and Gerlache Strait, off the Antarctic Peninsula. The environmental variables involved in segregating these groups were several sedimentary features (redox potential, gravel content) and depth. The present study provides further support to previous ones that considered the shelf of the Bellingshausen Sea as a differentiated region within the Southern Ocean, clearly distinct to the adjacent Weddell and Scott Seas and the Antarctic Peninsula.  相似文献

The association between the variability of phytoplankton biomass and community structure and the distribution of water masses around the Antarctic Peninsula were examined during austral summer 1993. Phytoplankton biomass showed high variability, and was dominated by an autotrophic flagellate (Cryptomonas sp.) that represented, on average, 91% of total phytoplankton biomass. The lowest phytoplankton biomasses were associated with the strongly mixed, saline, cold waters characteristic of the Weddell Sea water mass, and with the waters influenced by ice melt from the Bellingshausen Sea. The highest biomasses were found in the confluence of these water masses, where a front develops. Community composition also differed among water masses, with eukariotic picoplankton and diatoms having their highest relative contribution to community biomass in stations with Bellingshausen Sea and Weddell Sea water masses, whereas the abundance of Cryptomonas sp. was highest at the confluence of these waters. These results indicate that mesoscale processes, that determine water mass distribution, are of paramount importance in controlling the time and space variability of Antarctic phytoplankton.  相似文献

Recent studies have revealed increasing numbers of benthic invertebrate species producing pelagic larvae in Antarctic waters. This paper investigates temporal changes in larval abundance in shallow areas of Admiralty Bay. Plankton was collected from December to May of 2000/2001 and 2001/2002. Air and water temperature and solar radiation were significantly higher during the second year, characterising three seasonal periods early summer, late summer and early winter. Mean meroplankton abundance was 160 and 1,548 in d.100 m−3 for the first and second years, respectively. Mollusc veligers were dominant in both years. Analysis of variance showed that in 2001 veligers were present in the early winter and in 2002 they were synchronous with the late summer phytoplankton bloom; polychaetes and trochophors were concentrated in the early winter, while echinoderms and nemerteans were abundant in early summer. These results showed the importance of seasonality (i.e. a combination of air and water temperature, solar radiation and food supply) to the reproductive events of an Antarctic coastal nearshore environment.  相似文献

During November and December 1992, plankton samples were collected using a ring net of mesh size 200 m vertically hauled through a 600 m water column, at five stations along a transect running north from the Allison Peninsula in the Bellingshausen Sea. Three stations were located over the continental shelf; two of these were ice bound, whilst the third was at the ice edge. Two other stations were in deeper, ice-free water. Sixteen different larval and juvenile types were found representing seven phyla: Echinodermata, Nemertea, Coelenterata, Mollusca, Annelida, Arthropoda and Bryozoa, of which the first two were the most abundant. Larval numbers and types decreased with distance offshore and away from permanent sea ice. The presence of many stages of nemertean larval development within a short time scale, in an area where developmental tends to be slow, suggests that reproduction occurs over an extended period and that the larvae have a long planktonic phase. The increased size of later developmental stages of the nemertean larvae indicates they obtain nutrition within the water column during winter, when little particulate food is present.  相似文献

In the late 1980s, recruitment failures of the musselMytilus edulis led to economic problems in the mussel fishing and cultivation industries of northwestern Europe. As part of a collaborative study to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms affecting recruitment processes of mussels, plankton samples were collected regularly over a four-year period (1990–1993) from three stations in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea. The bivalve component of the plankton was dominated by the Solenidae, which was almost exclusively represented byEnsis americanus (= directus). M. edulis was the second most abundant species. Abundances of mussel larvae peaked 2 to 4 weeks after spawning maxima in the adult populations. Although variations in timing and amplitude of the total larval densities occurred, annual abundances ofM. edulis larvae remained stable during the study period, and regional abundance differences were insignificant. A close relationship was found between peaks in larval abundance and phytoplankton blooms. Differences in larval concentrations in the ebb and the flow currents were insignificant. Planktic mussel larvae measured between 200 μm and 300 μm, and successive cohorts were recognizable in the majority of samples. Most larvae were found to originate from local stocks, although imports from outside the area do occur.  相似文献

Summary Two cruises of the ARA/Islas Orcadas (late winter/early spring 1978 and late summer/early fall 1979) provided data which show that temporal variability of phytoplankton biomass and productivity in the oceanic wates of the Southwest Atlantic and Scotia Sea is insignificant when compared to the influence of geographical variability. Two bloom stations sampled during the late winter/early spring cruise had chlorophyll a concentrations and productivity values an order of magnitude higher than waters sampled from the same locations the following late summer/early fall. However, a comparison of 10 paired stations from the two cruises indicated no seasonal trend, as measured values of chlorophyll a and productivity from the first cruise were randomly larger or smaller than values measured during the second cruise. Consideration of individual stations from both seasons suggests the need to re-examine widely held notions regarding the effect of the Polar Front Zone and the island-mass effect on phytoplankton abundance and productivity. Higher-than-expected standing stock and productivity values at some open-ocean stations and at some stations within the Polar Front Zone indicate that looking for specific factors which promote localized enhancement or impoverishment of phytoplankton would be more useful than continuing with attempts to generalize Antarctic productivity data into broad seasonal or geographical patterns.In memory of Mary Alice McWhinnie (1922–1980)  相似文献

The abundance dynamics of adult dreissenids (Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas) and D. bugensis Andrusov) and of their larvae and the spatial distribution of the abundance of veligers and their role in the functioning of the plankton community have been analyzed on the basis of the data of original long-term monitoring (2004–2013) in Rybinsk Reservoir. The dreissenid veligers are most abundant in the summer time (July to August) when their number is comparable to that of the filter-feeding crustaceans and their biomass is close to that of rotifers. Before 2010 the production of veligers during the vegetation season comprised about 5% of the production of metazooplankton and the food consumption was about 1% of the primary production of phytoplankton. Pelagic invertebrate predators consumed about 90% of the production of veligers for the vegetation period. After 2010, the abundance of dreissenid larvae and their functional characteristics decreased by a factor of 5–6. Trophic relationships between zooplankton and veligers are discussed.  相似文献

Although frequent studies have been made on the benthos assemblages living in the Southern Ocean, few studies have dealt with molluscan assemblages and ecology. During the research programmes BENTART carried out in austral summers of 2003 and 2006 in a study area including Low Island, West Antarctic Peninsula, Bellingshausen Sea and Peter I Island, 45 stations were sampled using quantitative box-corer, Agassiz trawl, epibenthic sledge and rock dredge, at depths of 53–3,304 m. These data were used to search and analyse the malacological assemblages. A total of 2,889 living specimens of molluscs belonging to 139 species of shelled Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda were recoded. Gastropods were the best-represented in species richness, but the bivalves accounted the major abundance and Cyamiocardium denticulatum (460 individuals) was the most abundant species. Species richness varied from 1 to 37 species and diversity showed great variations at different stations. Four groups of stations of low similarities and some differences in faunistic composition were observed: one that gathers the Antarctic Peninsula and Peter I Island, one that also includes the Low Island, and two composed by stations of Bellingshausen Sea.  相似文献

The Bellingshausen Sea is one of the most remote and least surveyed seas of the Southern Ocean, so that little was known about benthic communities and those factors that determine community structuring until recently. The present work aims at characterizing the structure and spatial distribution of echinoid assemblages in the Bellingshausen Sea, as well as identifying the environmental factors that determine assemblage structuring. Echinoids were collected at 32 stations using an Agassiz trawl, at depths of 86–3,304?m, during BENTART oceanographic expeditions led in 2003 and 2006. Sediment and bottom water properties were analysed using an USNEL-type box corer and a Neil Brown Instrument System Mark III CTD, respectively. Echinoids were found at all stations, except Peter I Island. Seventeen species were identified, representing 22?% of the echinoid species present in the Southern Ocean and increasing twofold the number of species recorded in the Bellingshausen Sea so far. The echinoid fauna is dominated by the very abundant species Sterechinus antarcticus. Depth is the key factor that determines the nature of echinoid assemblages, which are mainly divided into the continental shelf, the slope and the deep-sea basin. In addition, sediment properties, namely redox values, organic matter and mud content, best match species dispersion on the shelf. Sediment properties affect echinoid distribution depending on species food range and feeding strategy. As it might be expected, sediment properties more strongly influence specialist feeders (Schizasteridae and Cidaridae) than generalists (Echinidae).  相似文献

Although scientific knowledge about the biodiversity of Antarctic benthic hydrozoans has considerably increased in recent years, little is known about their spatial distribution and underpinning factors. Trying to contribute to filling this gap, benthic hydroid spatial distribution in the Bellingshausen Sea (Southern Ocean) was studied. Samples were collected at 32 stations at depths between 86 and 3,304 m during Spanish Antarctic expeditions in 2003 and 2006. Sediments and bottom water properties were analyzed using an USNEL-type box corer and a Neil Brown Instrument System Mark III CTD, respectively. Forty species were reported (Acryptolaria sp., Stegopoma plicatile, Staurotheca dichotoma having the highest percentages of occurrence), representing ca. 19 % of the species richness of the known benthic hydroid fauna of the Southern Ocean. Three well-defined assemblages (shallow, deep and transitional) were established based on significant differences in species occurrence. Benthic hydroid spatial distribution in the Bellingshausen Sea seems to be controlled mainly by depth and substrate (most hydrozoan species are epibiotic), by species dispersal abilities and by species resilience to changing hydrodynamic conditions. The level of species richness found in the present study, compared with other Antarctic areas, gives support to arguments stated by authors against the idea that the Bellingshausen Sea is “a benthos desert” controlled by oligotrophic conditions and intense iceberg traffic.  相似文献

This study was conducted as part of the second Russian American long-term census of the Arctic in 2009 with sampling across the territorial of the Russian Federation in the Chukchi Sea since recent information regarding the standing stocks of pico- and nano-plankton is very limited. Using flow cytometry, small size fractions of the phytoplankton (<20 μm) obtained during the cruise were analyzed for the contributions of pico- and nano-eukaryotic phytoplankton and prokaryotic phytoplankton for the first time in the Chukchi Sea. The salinity and temperature in the southern part were significantly higher than those in the northern part of the Chukchi Sea. The abundance of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus represented about 30 % of total small phytoplankton cells with their cell abundances reaching 295 and 590 cells ml?1, respectively, although a significant portion (about 70 %) of the small phytoplankton community (<20 μm) was pico- and nano-eukaryotic plankton in the Chukchi Sea. Among different environmental factors, we found that temperature and NH4 concentrations were significantly positively correlated with the abundance of total phytoplankton, pico- and nano-eukaryotes, Prochlorococcus, and Synechococcus. Projected higher water temperature and increase in NH4 concentration condition in the Arctic Ocean as well as the Chukchi Sea could have fostered more small phytoplankton communities especially Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus.  相似文献

During January March 1996 the U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources program carried out an extensive multidisciplinary study in a 40,000 km2 sampling grid around Elephant Island, Antarctica. The physical, chemical, optical, and biological characteristics of the upper water column (0–750 m) were determined at 91 hydrographic stations. Analysis of the temperature and salinity data showed that six different hydrographic zones could be differentiated. The biological (phytoplankton distribution and abundance) and chemical (inorganic nutrient concentrations) data also showed characteristic differences within each of these six zones. In spite of high concentrations of inorganic N, P, and Si in all six zones, all stations in the northwest portion of the sampling grid (Drake Passage waters) showed very low chlorophyll-a concentrations in surface waters and a sub-surface maximum at increased depth. As stations in this zone have a relatively stable upper mixed layer of 40 m, excess macro-nutrients, and adequate solar radiation for maximal photosynthetic rates, this suggests that rates of primary production in this zone are limited by a micro-nutrient such as Fe. Phytoplankton abundance was much greater in the Bransfield Strait, in waters influenced by Bellingshausen Sea Water, and in the frontal zones where these water masses mix with Drake Passage waters. Relatively low and deeply distributed phytoplankton abundance was found at all stations in the southeastern portion of our sampling grid, where the upper water column was very weakly stratified and showed the characteristics of Weddell Sea water. The areas of enhanced phytoplankton biomass in the AMLR sampling grid roughly correspond to the areas where krill are generally also found in greater abundance. The overall biological productivity of the Elephant Island region would thus appear to be dependent upon the circulation patterns of the major water masses that intrude into this area. Relatively warm (12.50–12.75°C) and high-salinity[<35.640 practical salinity units (PSU)] water flowing eastwardwas detected at the shelf-break during a cruise carried Outin the southern Bay of Biscay in Spring 1987. The slope currentinduced the formation of a convergent front separating well-mixedoceanic waters from haline-stratified coastal waters. Very highconcentrations of dissolved oxygen (295 µmol kg–1)and chlorophyll a(>4.5 mg m–3) were found at the outeredge of the frontal boundary. Small autotrophic flagellatesdominated the phytoplankton community. Primary production peakedat the boundary region. Estimated phytoplankton growth ratesindicated that active growth was taking place, with lower turnovertimes integrated over the water column at the frontal station(2.5–5 days) than at coastal (1.5–2.8 days) or oceanic(1.5–3.5 days) stations. The lowest doubling times (1–2days) were calculated for surface frontal populations. Accumulationof zooplankton was also observed associated with the convergentphysical structure, although this relationship was less markedthan for phytoplankton. Copepods, mainly Paracalanus parvus,Acartia clausi and Oithona helgolandica, formed the bulk ofthe mesozooplankton biomass. Compatibility between the sizeof phytoplankton cells and copepod size spectra indicate highfood availability for these animals, particularly in the vicinityof the front. The distribution of fish eggs and fish larvaewas also coupled with the slope current-induced front. Sardinelarvae were more abundant at the coastal side of the front,whereas larval stages of blue whiting reached the highest densitiesat off-shelf stations. Larvae of lamellibranch molluscs andbryozoa were restricted to nearshore waters, as the frontalboundary prevented larval dispersion to the open ocean. Theresults presented in this paper suggest that the Iberian slopecurrent and its associated shelf-break frontal structure werecrucial in controlling phytoplankton primary production, activityof grazers, distribution of larvae of fishes and benthic invertebrates,and ultimately in determining the structure of the pelagic foodweb in the southern Bay of Biscay during the seasonal periodof vertical mixing.  相似文献

Summary Planktonic diatoms were sampled in the ice-edge zone of the Bellingshausen Sea during the early austral spring of 1990 and of the Weddell Sea during the late spring of 1983, the autumn of 1986, and the winter of 1988. The four cruises in the Antarctic marginal ice edge zones, combined with the summer cruise in Prydz Bay during a brief ice-free period (1988) provided us with opportunities for spatial and seasonal studies of diatom abundance and distribution in the water column. Cells from discrete water samples from 73 stations near the marginal ice-edge zones during all seasons were counted to gain quantitative information on the composition, abundance, and distribution of diatoms. Diatom abundance was dominated by the pennate diatom, usually nanoplanktonic, Fragilariopsis cylindrus (Grunow) Krieger, during all five cruises. The highest integrated numbers of F. cylindrus were found during the summer cruise with 7.9 × 1010 cells m–2 and the lowest numbers were found during the winter cruise with 1.1 × 108 cells m–2. The average integrated abundance of F. cylindrus from the five cruises was about 35% of the total diatom abundance. The overall spatial pattern of F. cylindrus near the marginal ice-edge zones during the five seasonal cruises were similar with the highest number of cells in open waters compared to ice-covered waters. When all 73 stations during the five cruises were included in the correlation analysis, the abundance of total diatoms was positively correlated with the abundance of F. cylindrus, suggesting that the ice-edge pulses of diatom assemblages in the water column largely reflected its abundance. Cluster analysis revealed that the stations in marginal ice-edge zones were not only separated by seasons and locations, but they also separated based on location of stations in relation to the ice edge (open water stations vs. ice-covered stations).  相似文献

During a three-year plankton monitoring at the island of Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea), pelagic larvae ofScoloplos armiger (O. F. Müller, 1776) were observed to occur regularly from February to April. Up to the present day, only benthic development within egg cocoons has been described (Anderson, 1959). Planktonic larvae comprise early, ovoid trochophores up to advanced stages with 11 setigers. The main morphological difference between the two larval types is the more numerous differentiation of lateral cilia by the pelagic larvae. Annual alterations in appearance and abundance suggest that reproduction is correlated with water temperature.  相似文献

The benthic macroinvertebrates in the Kenya waters of Lake Victoria (ca. 1400 km2) were surveyed during four 10 day sampling periods in February, April, August and November 1984. Fourty three taxonomic groups were recorded. Oligochaetes, molluscs and dipteran larvae were the most abundant and widely distributed groups. The dominant oligochaetes were Branchiura sowerbyii Beddard and the swamp worm Alma emini Michaelsen, which were abundant in all silty and soft mud areas in both littoral and open water zones. Melanoides tuberculata Müller, Bellamya unicolor Olivier and Caelatura spp. were the most abundant molluscs. Different patterns were observed between near-littoral stations (<8 m deep) and deep water stations (8–40 m deep). After 10 years (1994), the macroinvertebrates of Lake Victoria were examined again. No evidence was found of seasonal changes in the composition or benthos density, although local changes occurred in some species which were attributed to swarming behaviour or larval settlement patterns. The spatial distribution of the fauna may be influenced primarily by oxygen availability and industrial effluent discharged from paper mill and agro-based industries in the catchment of the lake. There has been a shift in abundance, from an Oligochaeta and Insecta dominated community in 1984, to the present community dominated by Mollusca and Oligochaeta. The ecological role of the benthic community and its recent changes to fisheries production in the lake is discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper was to study the spatial distribution, abundance and composition of fish larvae in the northern Ionian Sea. Samples were collected to the 600 m depth with an electronic multinet BIONESS during the “INTERREG Italia-Grecia” oceanographic cruise carried out in March 2000 off the Apulian Italian coast. A total of 46 species of teleost early stages were collected, belonging to 38 genera and 22 families. Over 52% of the larvae identified were mesopelagic species, almost 27% were demersal and about 21% pelagic. A total of 307 myctophids, 69 clupeids and 61 gadid post-larvae dominated the community. Benthosema glaciale (mean 6.1 mm SL) was the most abundant species (21.6%), the most frequent in the samples (28.8%), and dominant in the whole study area (mean 1.4 ind/100 m3). Particular attention was given to the horizontal and vertical distribution and abundance of the three dominant post-larval species: Benthosema glaciale, Sprattus sprattus sprattus and Notoscopelus elongatus. The Pearson coefficient (R = 0.734) showed a high correlation between total zooplankton and fish larval assemblages in terms of spatial distribution abundance values. Regarding the vertical distribution of fish larvae, Sorensen’s index (S = 0.69) showed that fish larvae and total zooplankton abundance peaks co-occurred along the water column.  相似文献

The unknown benthic ichthyofauna of the Bellingshausen Sea was analysed. Some data concerning the ichthyofauna of Peter I Island were also included. A total of 583 specimens belonging to 32 species were collected mainly by an Agassiz trawl and baited traps set between 86 and 1,947 m depth. A total of 72.2% of the specimens (89.0% of them Nototheniidae) were caught with the Agassiz trawl, whereas 27.8% of the individuals (90.1% of them Zoarcidae) were captured with traps. The Bellingshausen Sea ichthyofauna was dominated by Zoarcidae (43.9% of individuals, 35.8% by weight) and Nototheniidae (43.0 and 15.2%, respectively). Twenty-two of the 23 species captured in the Bellingshausen Sea are reported for the first time from this area. Trematomus scotti was the dominant nototheniid in the Bellingshausen Sea whereas Lepidonotothen larseni was dominant off Peter I Island.  相似文献
