While the evolution of cooperative breeding systems (where non-breeding helpers participate in rearing young produced by dominant females) has been restricted to lineages with socially monogamous mating systems where coefficients of relatedness between group members are usually high, not all monogamous lineages have produced species with cooperative breeding systems, suggesting that other factors constrain the evolution of cooperative breeding. Previous studies have suggested that life-history parameters, including longevity, may constrain the evolution of cooperative breeding. Here, we show that transitions to cooperative breeding across the mammalian phylogeny have been restricted to lineages where females produce multiple offspring per birth. We find no support for effects of longevity or of other life-history parameters. We suggest that the evolution of cooperative breeding has been restricted to monogamous lineages where helpers have the potential to increase the reproductive output of breeders.  相似文献

Semelparity, which is multiplying once in a lifetime, is a rare reproductive strategy among mammals. Several species of the marsupial family Dasyuridae experience 100% male mortality following an intense mating period. We investigated seasonal physiological changes that may be associated with early mortality in the male Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana; Didelphidae) and compared these changes with those of semelparous, male dasyurids. Free-ranging male Virginia opossums (n=36) were collected during 2001 at the Oklahoma State University Cross Timbers Experimental Range. Seasonal data were collected on hematological, morphological, and helminth parameters of these individuals. We used one-way ANOVA to determine whether there were seasonal differences among means for each parameter. It appeared that male Virginia opossums experienced some physiological changes similar to those of male dasyurids exhibiting semelparity. All males collected in summer (August) were juveniles of the year. Lack of adult males in August suggests high mortality of this cohort during the breeding season. Opossum characteristics exhibiting the dasyurid semelparity syndrome included packed cell volume, adrenal mass, and helminth numbers. Minor lymphocytopenia, neutrophilia, and testosterone concentrations also were similar to semelparous dasyurids. However, a lack of change in serum cortisol concentration and body mass and dynamics in immunoglobulin protein, serum protein, and testes mass were not consistent with previous reports of semelparous dasyurid physiology. Evolutionary divergence and differences in breeding behavior between dasyurids and didelphids may be responsible for the lack of consistency between the taxa.  相似文献

It is commonly accepted that dasyurids (Marsupialia: Dasyuridae) radiated in the late Miocene or early Pliocene in response to a drying trend in Australia's climate as evidenced from the high diversity of dasyurids from modern arid environments compared with Miocene rainforest assemblages. However, mid‐Pleistocene dasyurid assemblages from cave deposits at Mt Etna, Queensland are more diverse than any previously known from rainforest habitats. New taxa will be described elsewhere, but include three new genera as well as new species of Dasyurus, Antechinus and Phascogale. Comparison of dasyurids from Mt Etna sites that are interpreted as rainforest palaeoenvironments with fossil and extant assemblages indicate that they are at least as diverse as those from modern arid environments. Thus Neogene diversification of dasyurids occurred in both arid and rainforest habitats, but only the former survived continuing aridification. Hence, aridification cannot be invoked for the diversification of all dasyurid lineages.  相似文献

In this study we investigated the male testicular activity and the reproductive condition of females in relation to their external reproductive characteristics (pregnant, lactating, post-lactating) in the phyllostomid bat Artibeus lituratus (Olfers, 1818). Five hundred and twenty six individuals were examined (197 males and 329 females) in the period December 2001 to May 2003. Throughout the study most males displayed large scrotal testes. Thirty-three males were randomly selected for histological examination at various times throughout the year and were found to have spermatogenic testes. The reproductive characteristics of the females indicated that they were reproductively active mainly during the wet season. Pregnancy occurs at the end of the dry season and parturition in the wet season. Most individuals captured after this season, mainly the females, were sexually immature. Our results suggest a seasonal monoestrous reproductive pattern for the species; however, adult males being fertile throughout the year could suggest polyoestry. Seasonal polyoestry is a possibility. There was, however, no evidence that females had more than one pregnancy per year.  相似文献

Unlike most species of deer, Reeves' muntjac does not have a seasonal reproductive cycle. Births are equally distributed throughout the year and, irrespective of season of birth, females start breeding when they have reached a minimum body weight of about 10 kg. A significantly smaller proportion of females is born in the autumn/winter than the spring/summer, but there is no effect of maternal age or condition on foetal sex ratios for first or subsequent pregnancies. Whilst aseasonal breeding increases female productivity, males are only able to hold territories encompassing the ranges of a number of does for a relatively short period of time. It is argued that for muntjac there is much less inter-sexual variation in lifetime reproductive success than for seasonally-breeding polygynous cervids. Hence, although muntjac are sexually dimorphic and polygynous, females do not invest preferentially in male offspring.
Young males can be fertile from 36 weeks of age, when their first antlers are still in velvet. Whilst season of birth has no effect on the rate of sexual development in females, it does for males, with autumn-born male fawns attaining sexual maturity earliest. This accelerated development occurs in the period following independence from the mother, and there is no evidence of a maternal cost in producing male fawns. Since the canine tusks are the main weapons for intra-sexual conflict, there could be clear gains in terms of reproductive success for males that attain sexual maturity, adult weight and adult tusk size quickly, even though their first antlers are much smaller than those of older bucks. The hypothesis is presented that, for muntjac, the majority of a male's lifetime reproductive success is achieved relatively early in life when the canine tusks are in pristine condition, and that bucks lose their territories, and associated access to oestrous does, once the canines are broken.  相似文献

Recent molecular studies have provided estimates of phylogeny for nearly all living and recently extinct species in the Order Dasyuromorphia, the dominant clade of insectivorous‐carnivorous marsupials in Australasia. We review these studies along with morphology‐based ones, and present an analysis of all cytochrome b, 12S rRNA, and protamine Pl gene sequences available. In light of these results, we provide a revised suprageneric classification and assess the implications of molecular and paleontological data for dasyurid cladogenesis. Molecular results divide extant dasyurids (Dasyuridae) into four major clades apart from the numbat (Myrmecobiidae) and thylacines (Thylacinidae). We recognize these clades as tribes Dasyurini (Dasyurus, Phascolosorex, and allied genera) and Phascogalini (Antechinus, Murexia, Phascogale) in the Subfamily Dasyurinae, and tribes Sminthopsini (Sminthopsis, Ningaui, Antechinomys) and Planigalini (Planigale) in the Subfamily Sminthopsinae. Each tribe shows a basal radiation of lineages corresponding to genera or species groups. Our results concur with the most recent previous synthesis of dasyurid phylogeny in many respects, but subsumption of New Guinean ‘phascolosoricines’ and ‘muricines’ within Dasyurini and Phascogalini, respectively, constitute significant differences. In particular, the sister‐pairing of ‘phascolosoricines’ with a Dasyurus‐Sarcophilus clade implied by molecular data is difficult to reconcile with anatomy. Divergence rates of mitochondrial sequences are calibrated approximately by comparing thylacine‐to‐dasyurid distances with the age of the oldest thylacinid (Badjcinus, latest Oligocene). Estimated cladogenic dates suggest that extant subfamilies shared a common ancestor around 24 Mya and that major radiations began late in the mid‐Miocene, consistent with the results of previous paleontological studies. The late‐middle and late Miocene corresponds to an episode of faunal turnover in Australian marsupials (including the decline of thylacinid and bandicoot genera, as well as the rise of dasyurids) and to a time when uplift of the New Guinean highlands accelerated the transition from rainforest to drier habitats. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that continent‐wide climate changes modulated macroevolution across these independent marsupial clades.  相似文献

We report the complete DNA sequences of the protamine P1 gene and flanking regions for 13 species of the marsupial family Dasyuridae. The structure of the protamine locus is conserved in dasyurids and consists of two exons (of lengths 142–151 and 47 bp) separated by an intron (208–240 bp). A key feature of the dasyund intron is a 38–40 by duplication found in all species examined to date. This duplication apparently predates the radiation of modern dasyurid lineages and may be homologous to a similar feature in the marsupial mole (Notoryctes). Sequences from a species of Planigale demonstrate that this genus is unique among marsupials in possessing cysteine residues in its protamine P1 molecules. Cysteines may provide enhanced chemical stability for condensed sperm nuclei, a physiological feature that would converge on the common eutherian pattern. Phylogenetic analysis of the protamine genes yields a tree that is largely congruent with previous molecular systematic studies in two areas: (1) There are three main dasyurid lineages corresponding to the Sminthopsinae, Dasyurinae, and Phascogalinae; (2) Dasyurinae and Phascogalinae are sister groups. This study is the first estimate of dasyurid relationships based on a nuclear DNA sequence. Correspondence to: J.D. Retief  相似文献

Males of some invertebrate species transfer large ejaculates, and many of the substances contained therein are incorporated by females into their somatic and ovarian tissues. These incorporated substances are expected to be energetically costly for males to produce, but benefit males by enhancing their fertilization success and/or the viability of their offspring. A better understanding of the evolution and maintenance of this important reproductive strategy should come from phylogenetic examination. We therefore quantified the extent of ejaculate incorporation by females of 34 species of Drosophila. Substantive amounts of male-derived proteins were more frequently detected in female somatic tissue than in ovarian tissue. Substantive ejaculate incorporation by females was found to have arisen numerous times across the phylogeny and tended to be lineage specific in expression. The extent to which evolution of a nutritive function of the ejaculate may have been influenced by phylogenetic history in the genus Drosophila is discussed. Macroevolutionary relationships between the amount of ejaculate incorporated by females and other features of species' reproductive and life-history biology, including body size, sperm length, the formation of an insemination reaction in females, and sex-specific ages of reproductive maturity, also were examined after controlling for phylogenetic effects.  相似文献

In summary, the reproductive cycles of C. minutas and C. brachyotis are shown in Fig. 12. Reproduction of both species is seasonal and continuous bimodal polyoestry, however, reproduction of neither species is linked to rains nor the general season of flowering/fruiting of trees.
Adult females of both species produce 2 litters/yr, 1 neonate/birth. Within each species, the females are in reproductive synchrony, with young born in two distinct seasons (3–4 months each) of parturition 5–7 months apart, centring about the two seasons of less rain, which may correspond to the fruiting of certain species of trees (e.g. mangoes for C. brachyotis ). Each parturition is followed by postpartum oestrus. Gestation spans about 5–6 months, with embryonic development delayed or arrested in early stages. Both sexes of C. minutas (and probably also C. brachyotis ) attain sexual maturity at about 7 months, with females giving birth the first time at about 12 months.  相似文献

The callitrichines are a specialized radiation of primates that are characterized in part by variable social systems and cooperative infant care. Callimico goeldii, unlike the other callitrichines, have single rather than twin offspring, reducing the need for allocare and permitting synchronous breeding within groups. Low mortality rates among offspring and unstable social groups are suggested to be possible factors that have led to single births among C. goeldii. Single offspring may benefit from greater maternal investment and more frequent food sharing than twin offspring, factors that may help to explain why C. goeldii reaches sexual maturity more rapidly than other callitrichines. In addition, increased breeding opportunities for young C. goeldii females may have selected for rapid maturation rates among this species. Postpartum ovulation and aseasonal resource availability appear to permit females to have biannual birth seasons, further increasing the potential reproductive output.  相似文献

The structural features of the epididymis and the number and distribution of spermatozoa along the duct, during the breeding season, were examined in two semelparous and three iteroparous dasyurid marsupials. Total numbers of epididymal spermatozoa were extremely low in all of these species when compared with epididymal sperm numbers in most other marsupials and eutherian mammals. Although semelparous dasyurids had significantly more epididymal spermatozoa than itcroparous species, very few spermatozoa were seen in the distal cauda epididymidis of any of the species examined. This coincided with distinct changes in duct shape and the surface area of the lumen in caudal regions which resulted in a reduced sperm storage capacity in the cauda epididymidis of these species. The data suggest that, like Antechinus stuartii (Taggart & Temple-Smith, 1990a), sperm content of the ejaculates in these species will be extremely low, and that sperm motility and/or transport in the female tract is highly efficient. The functional and evolutionary significance of the reproductive strategies of semelparous and iteroparous dasyurid marsupials is still obscure and further study is needed to determine if the length of sperm storage in the female and sperm competition for storage sites is related to sperm distribution in the male and mating activities. This study does, however, clearly indicate that large numbers of spermatozoa are not required to ensure successful fertilization in either semelparous or iteroparous members of the family Dasyuridae.  相似文献

Many small desert dasyurids employ torpor almost daily during winter, because cold nights and low food availability impose high energetic costs. However, in Western Australia the arid zone extends into tropical, coastal regions, where winter temperature conditions are far less severe. We studied the thermal biology and activity patterns of free-ranging kaluta (~27 g), a dasyurid restricted to these tropical spinifex deserts, during the Austral winter (June–July) and in addition quantified activity patterns in captivity. Unlike most dasyurids, wild and captive kalutas were almost exclusively diurnal and retreated into underground burrows during the night. Despite being active during the warmer part of the day, kalutas entered torpor daily. However, torpor patterns differed remarkably between males and females. While females spent most of the night torpid at body temperatures (T b) as low as 21°C, close to soil temperature, males entered multiple short and shallow bouts (T b > 25°C) during the night. Males also maintained higher T bs during the early morning when active, occupied larger home ranges and covered greater distances while foraging than females. Hence, males appear to expend more energy than the similar-sized females both while foraging and during the rest phase. We propose that physiological as well as behavioural preparations for the September mating season that culminate in a complete male die-off might already impose energetic costs on males during winter.  相似文献

Delayed female reproduction in equilibrium and chaotic populations   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Behavioural and life history polymorphisms are often observed in animal populations. We analyse the timing of maturation and reproduction in risky and resource-limited environments. Field and laboratory evidence suggests that female voles and mice, for example, can adjust their breeding according to the level of risk to their own survival and to survival probabilities and recruitment of young produced under different environmental conditions. Under risky or harsh conditions breeding can be postponed until later in the current breeding season or even to the next breeding season. We develop a population dynamics and life history model for polymorphism in reproduction (co-existence of breeding and non-breeding behaviours) of females in an age-structured population, with two temporally distinct mating events within the breeding season. We assume that, after overwintering, the females can breed in spring and again in summer or they can delay breeding in spring and breed in summer only. Young females born in spring can either mature and breed in summer or stay immature and postpone breeding over the winter to the next breeding season. We show that an evolutionarily stable breeding strategy is either an age-structured combination of pure breeding behaviours (old females breed and young delay maturity) or a mixed breeding behaviour within age-classes (a fraction of females breed and the rest of the age class postpones breeding). Co-occurrence of mixed reproductive behaviour in spring and summer within a single breeding season is observed in fluctuating populations only. The reproductive patterns depend on intraspecific, possibly interspecific, and ecological factors. The density dependence (e.g. social suppression) and predation risk are shown to be possible evolutionary mechanisms in adjusting the relative proportions of the different but co-existing reproductive behaviours.  相似文献

The southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) is a seasonal breeding, burrowing marsupial adapted to a semi-arid environment and the closest relative of the endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii). Females typically give birth to one to two young every 3 years with young weaned at 360-400 days. This study examined the occurrence of polyoestry in a wild population of southern hairy-nosed wombats, and in particular the ability of this species to produce additional offspring in the same breeding season if a young was prematurely lost or removed. Pouch young were removed during the breeding seasons of 1996/1997 and 2003. No females from the 1996 (n=3)/1997 (n=3) group gave birth to a second pouch young in the same breeding season. However, two females in this group gave birth to young the following season. In contrast, all the 2003 group of females (n=6) produced a second offspring in the same breeding season after removal of pouch young (RPY). The reason for the different response to RPY between the two groups is unknown. These studies confirm that southern hairy-nosed wombats are polyoestrus in the wild and are capable of producing more than one offspring in a single breeding season. Females that failed to return to oestrus in the breeding season that pouch young were removed bred again in the following season. Rapid replacement of southern hairy-nosed wombat pouch young in the same breeding season as RPY suggests that this procedure, linked to either hand-rearing or interspecific cross-fostering, should be seriously considered as a priority conservation action to increase the population size of the critically endangered sister species, the northern hairy-nosed wombat.  相似文献

Sexually selected traits can be expected to increase in importance when the period of sexual behavior is constrained, such as in seasonally restricted breeders. Anolis lizard male dewlaps are classic examples of multifaceted signaling traits, with demonstrated intraspecific reproductive function reflected in courtship behavior. Fitch and Hillis found a correlation between dewlap size and seasonality in mainland Anolis using traditional statistical methods and suggested that seasonally restricted breeding seasons enhanced the differentiation of this signaling trait. Here, we present two tests of the Fitch–Hillis Hypothesis using new phylogenetic and morphological data sets for 44 species of Mexican Anolis. A significant relationship between dewlap size and seasonality is evident in phylogenetically uncorrected analyses but erodes once phylogeny is accounted for. This loss of strong statistical support for a relationship between a key aspect of dewlap morphology and seasonality also occurs within a species complex (A. sericeus group) that inhabits seasonal and aseasonal environments. Our results fail to support seasonality as a strong driver of evolution of Anolis dewlap size. We discuss the implications of our results and the difficulty of disentangling the strength of single mechanisms on trait evolution when multiple selection pressures are likely at play.  相似文献

We reassessed the phylogenetic relationships of dasyuromorphians using a large molecular database comprising previously published and new sequences for both nuclear (nDNA) and mitochondrial (mtDNA) genes from the numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus), most living species of Dasyuridae, and the recently extinct marsupial wolf, Thylacinus cynocephalus. Our molecular tree suggests that Thylacinidae is sister to Myrmecobiidae + Dasyuridae. We show robust support for the dasyurid intrafamilial classification proposed by Krajewski & Westerman as well as for placement of most dasyurid genera, which suggests substantial homoplasy amongst craniodental characters presently used to generate morphology‐based taxonomies. Molecular dating with relaxed molecular clocks suggests that dasyuromorphian cladogenesis began in the Eocene, and that all three dasyuromorphian families originated prior to the end of this epoch. Radiation within Thylacinidae and Dasyuridae had occurred by the middle to late Oligocene, consistent with recognition of primitive thylacinids (e.g. Badjcinus turnbulli) in the later Oligocene and of putative dasyurids (e.g. Barinya wangala) by the early Miocene. We propose that all four extant dasyurid tribes were in existence by the early Miocene and that most modern dasyurid genera/species were established before the later Miocene. This is in marked contrast to the popularly accepted advocation of their origins in the latest Miocene–early Pliocene. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Male-male Competition and Reproductive Success in Elephant Seals   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Male-male competition and reproductive success of northern elephantseals, Mirounga augustirostris, was studied for six consecutivebreeding seasons at Año Nuevo Island, California. Theconclusions were as follows: (i) Less than one third of themales in residence copulate during a breeding season. A fewmales are responsible for the majority of copulations, (ii)The number and age of males copulating varies with: (a) haremlocation and topography, (b) the number of estrous females inthe harem, and (c) the number of males competing for females,(iii) Copulation frequency is related directly to success inmale-male competition, i.e., social rank. (iv) The same individualsmay dominate breeding for three consecutive breeding seasons.(v) Successful males die within a year or two after their reproductivepeak. (vi) The reproductive success of most males is nil orlow because many die before reaching breeding age and some ofthose that reach maturity are prevented from mating by the highestranking males. (vii) Individual strategies have important consequencesfor reproductive success, (viii) Male-male competition is amajor cause of pup mortality prior to weaning. The potential reproductive success of males is much greaterthan that of females. Changes in colony number and compositionaffect the reproductive success of males as well as females.  相似文献

Male investment in testes and sperm duct gland in the polygamous nest breeding two-spotted goby Gobiusculus flavescens (Fabricius) was investigated in relation to time in reproductive season and individual physical parameters. This small teleost fish is most likely the most abundant species found along the rocky shores of the North East Atlantic. The two-spotted goby has a single reproductive season, during which nest-caring males can raise several clutches of offspring. According to the literature the males are on average larger than the females. Here we report for the first time a population showing a reversal of this trend, with males on average being smaller than females, a difference likely caused by a large proportion of small males. Early in the breeding season these small males have typical sneaker characters, with relatively large testes and small seminal duct glands compared to the larger dominant territorial males. The presence of these two alternative male reproductive tactics is confirmed by histological studies, which shows the presence of sperm in the sperm duct glands (SDG) of smaller males, but not in the SDG of intermediate and larger males. To our knowledge, males with typical sneaker characters have not been reported in earlier studied populations of two-spotted goby. Interestingly we found that testes investment declined significantly over the course of the breeding season, and that this reduction was significantly more pronounced in small compared to the large males. Further, a significant increase in seminal duct gland (SDG) mass was observed for the smaller males over the breeding season. We propose that this indicates a possible shift in mating tactic by smaller males from a parasitic to a nest-holding tactic over the course of the breeding season. Thus, the observed size dependent plasticity in investment in SDG over time suggests that the reproductive tactic of G. flavescens is conditional, and possibly influenced by mate availability and male—male competition.  相似文献

The present work describes the relationship between age and reproductive investment in the grass goby females in the Venice Lagoon. Age was estimated by otoliths reading, while reproductive investment was assessed by either the relative number of mature females across the breeding season and their gonadosomatic index. Females from different size/age classes differed in the timing and level of reproductive investment. The oldest females (3+ years old) appeared earlier in the spawning habitat, investing more at the beginning of the breeding season. In turn a later arrival in the spawning habitats has been observed for younger females (0+) and smaller individuals of 1+ and 2+ age classes. Present results gave evidence of an earlier age/size at sexual maturity of the grass goby in the Venice Lagoon compared to previous information on the species from the same lagoon and from other Mediterranean areas. Results were discussed in the light of previous data on reproductive strategy of nesting males and of the relationship between fishing pressure and life history traits in the Venice lagoon.  相似文献
