The 13C signature of organic carbon in estuarine bottom sediment in Louisiana Barataria Basin was used for estimating carbon flux from adjacent marsh. The stable carbon isotope composition of plants, soils and sediments from the basin were determined. The 13C content of marsh vegetation ranged from -26.3 to -27.8% for C3 freshwater vegetation in the upper basin to -13.0 to -13.3% for C4 vegetation in the lower basin. The 13C content of the highly organic marsh soils were similar to 13C content of vegetation present. The 13C content of organic carbon from bottom sediment of open water bodies ranged from 27.3 in the upper basin (freshwater) to 16.4 in bottom sediment of salt marsh ponds. The13C signature of organic carbon in bottom sediment from saline regions corresponded to the size of the body of water. The smaller salt marsh ponds contain sediment with 13C values close to that of the C4 plantSpartina alterniflora. Results suggest that phytoplankton rather thanSpartina alterniffora is the likely organic source in bottom sediment of the larger bay near the coast (e.g. Caminada Bay).  相似文献

The potential nitrogen sources for the primary production in the intertidal area are nitrogen compounds obtained from mineralization in the sediment and the water column, nitrogen fixation, outflow from rivers and groundwater seeping from the mainland. The available inorganic nitrogen in the adjacent coastal waters decreases from 50–80 μmol NO3 -/l and 6–15 μmol NH4 +/l in early spring to ca one tenth during the growing season. In the sediment of the tidal flats available ammonia and nitrate vary between 50 and 100 μmol/1 pw. In the salt marsh available ammonia increases from 200–300 nmol NH4 +/g fwt to approximately double the amount, and the available nitrate varies from 100–300 nmol NO3 -/g fwt (250–750 μmol NO3 -/l pw) to ca one third during the growing season. The exchange of NH4 +, NO2 - and NO3 - across the sediment water interface has been estimated during tidal cycles under light and dark conditions on the tidal flats. The flux of nitrogen was dependent on the flora and fauna as well as the time of the year. The tidal activity, frequency and length of inundation are considered the driving force in a two-way process between salt marshes and adjacent coastal waters. The role of marsh sediment, tidal water and sediments of the tidal flats as sites of accumulation, consumption and remineralization of organic matter is emphasized. The possible exchange of ammonia and nitrate between the salt marsh and the different compartments of the tidal water is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Lucerne is an important forage legume in the south and south-east of Sweden on well-drained soils. However, data is lacking on the apparent amount of nitrogen derived through N2 fixation by field-grown lucerne. This report provides basic information on the subject. The experiment was performed in a lucerne ley grown 40 km north of Uppsala. The input of nitrogen through fixation to the above-ground plant material of an established lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) ley was estimate by15N methodology during two successive years. The amount of fixed N was 242 kg N ha–1 in 1982 and 319 kg N ha–1 in 1983. The proportion of N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) was 70% and 80% for the two years respectively. The first harvest in both years contained a lower proportion fixed N. Both N2 fixation and dry matter production were enhanced during the second year, particularly in the first harvest. The Ndfa was 61% in the first harvest in 1982, compared to 72% Ndfa during the same period in 1983. This demonstrates the strong influence of environment on both dry matter production and N2 fixation capacity of the lucerne. In addition anin situ acetylene reduction assay was used in 1982 to measure the seasonal distribution of the N2 fixation and in 1983 to study the effect of soil moisture on the N2 fixation process. The seasonal pattern showed great dependence on physiological development and harvest pattern of the lucerne ley. The maximum rate of N2 fixation occurred at the bud or early flower stage of growth and was followed by a rapid decline as flowering proceeded. After harvest the nitrogenase activity markedly decreased and remained low during at least two weeks until regrowth of new shoots began. Irrigation doubled the nitrogenase activity of the lucerne in late summer 1983, when soil moisture content in the top soil was near wilting point. No changes in nitrogenase activity did occur in response to watering earlier during the summer, when the soil matric potential was around –0.30 MPa.  相似文献

Most probable numbers (MPNs) of methanogens in various salt marsh and estuarine sediments were determined with an anaerobic, habitat-simulating culture medium with 80% H2 plus 20% CO2 as substrate. Average MPNs for the short Spartina (SS) marsh sediments of Sapelo Island, Ga., were maximal at the 5- to 7-cm depth (1.2 × 107/g of dry sediment). Populations decreased to approximately 880/g of dry sediment at the 34- to 36-cm depth. There was no significant difference between summer and winter populations. In tall Spartina (TS) marsh sediments, average populations were maximal (1.2 × 106/g of dry sediment) in the upper 0- to 2-cm zone; populations from the 5- to 36-cm zones were similar (average of 9 × 104/g of dry sediment). Methanogenic populations for TS sediments of James Island Creek marsh, Charleston, S.C., were similar (average of 3 × 106/g of dry sediment) for all depths tested (0 to 22 cm), which was comparable to the trend observed for TS sediments at Sapelo Island, Ga. Sediment grab samples collected along a transect of James Island Creek and its adjacent Spartina marsh had MPNs that were approximately 20 times greater for the region of Spartina growth (average of 106/g of dry sediment) compared with the channel (approximately 5 × 104 methanogens per g of dry sediment). A similar trend was found at Pawley's Island marsh, S.C., but populations were approximately one order of magnitude lower. In vitro rates of methanogenesis with SS sediments incubated under 80% H2-20% CO2 showed that the 5- to 7-cm region exhibited maximal activity (51 nmol of CH4 g−1 h−1), which was greater than rates for sediments above and below this depth. SS sediment samples (5 to 7 cm) incubated under 100% N2 and supplemented with formate exhibited rates of methanogenesis similar to those generated by samples under 80% H2-20% CO2. Replacing the N2 atmosphere with H2 resulted in an eightfold decrease in the rate of methanogenesis. In vitro methanogenic activity by TS salt marsh sediments, incubated under 80% H2-20% CO2, was similar for all depths tested (0 to 22 cm). TS sediment samples (0 to 7 cm) supplemented with formate and incubated under 100% N2 had greater rates of methanogenesis compared with unsupplemented samples.  相似文献

Short-term sediment deposition was studied at four salt marsh areas in the Tagus estuary. In areas covered with Sarcocornia perennis, Sarcocornia fruticosa, Halimione portulacoides and Spartina maritima and also in the non-vegetated areas, sedimentation was measured as the monthly accumulation of sediments on nylon filters anchored on the soil surface, from August 2000 to May 2001. Our experiments were used also to determine the influence of the different plant species in vertical accretion rates. Short-term sedimentation rates (from 2.8 to 272.3 g m−2 d−1) did show significant differences when the four salt marshes studied in the Tagus estuary were compared to each others. Salt marshes closer to the sediment sources had higher sedimentation rates. Our results suggest that the salt marsh type and surface cover may provide small-scale variations in sedimentation and also that sediment deposition values do change according to the position of the different plant species within the salt marsh. Sedimentation is an essential factor in salt marsh vertical accretion studies and our investigation may provide support to help forecast the adaptative response of the Tagus estuary wetlands to future sea level rise.  相似文献

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the impact of red mud, the residue of the Bayer process for extracting alumina from bauxite, on wetland to investigate whether red mud can be used for wetland restoration. Two wetland species,Spartina alterniflora Loisel. andSagittaria lancifolia L., were used to test their response to the following substrate treatments: 100% marsh sediment, 100% red mud, a mixture of 50% marsh sediment and 50% red mud, a mixture of 50% red mud and 50% compost, and neutralized red mud. Each substrate treatment received two fertilization levels, fertilized (N–P–K) and unfertilized. Red mud could support the growth of the salt marsh species,Spartina alterniflora, but not the fresh marsh species.Sagittaria lancifolia. The high Na content and salinity of red mud, even when mixed with marsh sediment or compost, appeared to be the primary cause for the high mortality ofSagittaria in these substrates. Fertilization did not reduce the stress response ofSagittaria to red mud, but significantly increased the growth ofSpartina. Red mud is low in available N and P and required fertilizer or organic matter (e.g., compost) addition to increase fertility. In experiments with both fresh and salt marsh sediments, the concentrations of soluble heavy metals, with the exception of Mn, were not significantly greater for red mud than for marsh sediment. Thus, the release of heavy metals from red mud over the short-term may not pose an environmental concern. However, the mobilization of heavy metals over the long-term and the influence of plants in accumulating metals requires further investigation.  相似文献

Understanding the mechanisms that shape plant distribution patterns is a major goal in ecology. We investigated the role of biotic interactions (competition and facilitation) and abiotic factors in creating horizontal plant zonation along salinity gradients in the Elbe estuary. We conducted reciprocal transplant experiments with four dominant species from salt and tidal freshwater marshes at two tidal elevations. Ten individuals of each species were transplanted as sods to the opposing marsh type and within their native marsh (two sites each). Transplants were placed at the centre of 9‐m2 plots along a line parallel to the river bank. In order to disentangle abiotic and biotic influences, we set up plots with and without neighbouring vegetation, resulting in five replicates per site. Freshwater species (Bolboschoenus maritimus and Phragmites australis) transplanted to salt marshes performed poorly regardless of whether neighbouring vegetation was present or not, although 50–70% of the transplants did survive. Growth of Phragmites transplants was impaired also by competition in freshwater marshes. Salt marsh species (Spartina anglica and Puccinellia maritima) had extremely low biomass when transplanted to freshwater marshes and 80–100% died in the presence of neighbours. Without neighbours, biomass of salt marsh species in freshwater marshes was similar to or higher than that in salt marshes. Our results indicate that salt marsh species are precluded from freshwater marshes by competition, whereas freshwater species are excluded from salt marshes by physical stress. Thus, our study provides the first experimental evidence from a European estuary for the general theory that species boundaries along environmental gradients are determined by physical factors towards the harsh end and by competitive ability towards the benign end of the gradient. We generally found no significant impact of competition in salt marshes, indicating a shift in the importance of competition along the estuarine gradient.  相似文献

Nitrogen cycling in Louisiana Gulf Coast brackish marshes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nitrogen fixation and nitrogen accumulation were measured in a Louisiana Spartina patens brackish marsh. Using the acetylene reduction technique calibrated with direct 15N2 assimilation, an equivalent of 90.0 µ g N g–1 yr–1 was fixed. Fixation was greater in the summer months and in the upper portion of the soil profile. Extractable ammonium increased with depth and was negatively correlated with ethylene production. Average ammonium concentration in the sediment was 39 µg NH4 +-N g–1 sediment. Cesium-137 dating of the soil profile showed the marsh was vertically accreting at a rate of 0.60 cm yr–1. Calculations using vertical accretion rate, bulk density, and total nitrogen content of sediment indicate that the marshes are accumumating 7.2 g Nm–2 yr–1 thus serving as a major nitrogen sink. Measured nitrogen fluxes were incorporated with existing flux measurement in developing a nitrogen budget for the marsh.  相似文献

Pore water composition, pyrite distribution and pyrite crystal morphology of sediments from salt marshes in the Eastern Scheldt, southwestern Netherlands, were examined from July 1984 to October 1986.Hydrology and marsh vegetation were the chief determinants of pyrite accumulation. In the bare sediments of pans in the low marsh, highly reducing conditions prevailed just below the surface. At these sites, practically all the incoming detrital pyrite (0.5–1% FeS2) was preserved. The in-situ formation of pyrites was negligible in these anoxic sediments. All incoming detrital pyrite was oxidized in the surface layers (0–10 cm) of the medium-high marsh overgrown withSpartina anglica. Pyrite was formed at a rate of 2.6–3.8 mol S-FeS2m–2yr–1 in a narrow range of depths (15–20cm), at the interface of the oxidizing and underlying reducing sediment. At this interface the concentration profiles of Fe2+ and dissolved S intersected. The role of the rhizosphere is discussed in connection with pyrite formation. No further pyrite formation occurred deeper in the sediment. This resulted in the build up of high concentrations of dissolved S and acid volatile sulfides (AVS). The decrease with depth in oxalate-extractable Fe indicated that most of the iron oxyhydroxides (70–80%) had been transformed to pyrite. Another 10–20% of oxalate-extractable Fe was present as AVS. The abundance of framboidal pyrite particles and the high concentrations of AVS and dissolved S indicated that the formation of pyrite occurred via iron monosulfide intermediatesThere was a linear relationship between the organic carbon and the S-FeS2 content in theSpartina overgrown reducing sediment. The mean C/S ratio was 4.2.  相似文献

Geomorphology, vegetation and tidal fluxes are usually identified as the factors introducing variation in the flushing of particulate organic matter (POM) from tidal marshes to adjacent waters. Such variables may, however, be insufficient to explain export characteristics in marshes inhabited by ecosystem engineers that can alter the quantity and quality of POM on the marsh surface that is subject to tidal flushing. In this study we evaluated the balance between transfer of buried sedimentary organic carbon (C) to the marsh surface due to crab excavation (measured from the mounds of sediment excavated from burrows) and outputs of C from the surface due to sediment deposition within crab burrows (estimated from sediment deposited within PVC burrow mimics), in a Southwestern Atlantic salt marsh supporting dense (approximately 70 ind m−2) populations of the crab Chasmagnathus granulatus. C excavation by crabs was much greater than deposition of C within crab burrow mimics. Per area unit estimates of the balance between these two processes indicated that crabs excavated 5.98 g m−2 d−1 and 4.80 mg m−2 d−1 of total and readily (10 d) labile C, respectively. However, sediments excavated by crabs showed a significantly lower content of both total and readily-labile C than sediment collected in burrow mimics. This indicates that ecosystem engineering by burrowing crabs causes a net decrease in the concentration of C in the superficial sediment layers and, thus, an overall decrease in the amount of C that can be washed out of the marsh by tidal action. Incorporating the in situ activities of ecosystem engineers in models of marsh export should enhance understanding of the function of marshes in estuarine ecosystems.  相似文献

Floating marshes occur over 70% of the western Terrebonne Basin, Louisiana, USA, freshwater coastal wetlands. They are of several types: A free-floating thick-mat (45–60 cm) marsh dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia; a thick mat marsh dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia that floats part of the year, but whose vertical floating range is damped compared to adjacent water; and an irregularly-floating thin mat (< 30 cm) dominated by Eleocharis spp. in the spring and Ludwigia leptocarpa and Bidens laevis in the summer and fall. Floating mats must be almost entirely organic in order to be buoyant enough to float. The western Terrebonne wetlands receive large winter/spring supplies of suspended sediments from the Atchafalaya River. Even though sediment concentrations in the adjacent bayou are as high as 100 mg l–1, the Panicum hemitomon/Sagittaria lancifolia free-floating marsh probably receives no over-surface sediments since it floats continuously. The bulk density data of the damped-floating marsh, however, suggest some mineral sediment input, probably during winter when this marsh is submerged. These two types of floating marsh could not have developed in the present sediment regime of the Atchafalaya River, but as long as they remain floating can continue to exist. Thin floating mats are found in areas receiving the least sediment (<20 mg 1–1 suspended sediment concentration in adjacent bayous). This low sediment environment probably made possible their formation within the past 20 years. They may represent a transitional stage in mat succession from (1) existing thick-mat floating marsh to a degrading floating marsh, or (2) a floating marsh developing in shallow open water.Corresponding editor: D. The aerobic polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degrading microbial communities of two petroleum-impacted Spartina-dominated salt marshes in the New York/New Jersey Harbor were examined using a combination of microbiological, molecular and chemical techniques. Microbial isolation studies resulted in the identification of 48 aromatic hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial strains from both vegetated and non-vegetated marsh sediments. The majority of the isolates were from the genera Paenibacillus and Pseudomonas. Radiotracer studies using 14C-phenanthrene and 14C-pyrene were used to measure the PAH-mineralization activity in salt marsh sediments. The results suggested a trend towards increased PAH mineralization in vegetated sediments relative to non-vegetated sediments. This trend was supported by the enumeration of PAH-degrading bacteria in non-vegetated and vegetated sediment using a Most Probable Numbers (MPN) technique, which demonstrated that PAH-degrading bacteria existed in non-vegetated and vegetated sediments at levels ranging from 102 to 105 cells/g sediment respectively. No difference between microbial communities present in vegetated versus non-vegetated sediments was found using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (of the 16S rRNA gene) or phospholipid fatty acid analysis. These studies provide information on the specific members and activity of the PAH-degrading aerobic bacterial communities present in Spartina-dominated salt marshes in the New York/New Jersey Harbor estuary.  相似文献

The role of salt marshes as nitrogen sink is examined taking into consideration the seasonal variation of above and belowground biomass of Spartina martima and Halimione portulacoides in two marshes from Tagus estuary, Pancas and Corroios, and the degradation rates of belowground litter. Total nitrogen was determined in plant components, decomposing litter and sediment. Biomass was higher in Corroios, the saltier marsh, with 7190 g m−2 y−1 dw of S. maritima and 6593 g m−2 y−1 dw of H. portulacoides and the belowground component contributed to 96% and 90% of total biomass, respectively. In the other marsh, Pancas, belowground biomass contributed to 56% and 76% of total biomass for S. maritima and H. portulacoides, respectively. Litterbag experiment showed that between 25% and 50% of nitrogen is lost within the first month and remained relatively constant in the next four months. Slower decomposition is observed in sediments with higher nitrogen concentration (max. 0.7% N in the saltier marsh). Higher concentrations of N were found in the sediment upper layers. Considering the sediment-root system, most of the nitrogen is stored in the sediment compartment and only about 1–4% of the total N was found in the roots. Considering these results, Tagus salt marshes act as a sink for nitrogen.  相似文献

Thiobacillus intermedius was isolated from a salt marsh sediment with an interstitial water salinity of 30. This bacterium was cultured in a chemostat for 9 months. The optimum salinity for CO2 fixation by this Thiobacillus was 10, much less than the salinity of its natural environment. Respiration of cultures increased at high salinities and the pathway of thiosulfate oxidation was altered so that polythionates accumulated rapidly. One ecological conclusion from these results is that in nature this bacterium probably grows at its maximum possible rate only rarely.  相似文献

This study investigated the trophic shift of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) thinlip grey mullet Liza ramada and golden grey mullet Liza aurata during their recruitment in a salt marsh located on the European Atlantic Ocean coast. Stable‐isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of the fishes followed a pattern, having enrichments in 13C and 15N with increasing fork length (LF): δ13C in fishes < 30 mm ranged from ?19.5 to ?15.0‰, whereas in fishes > 30 mm δ13C ranged from ?15.8 to ?12.7‰, closer to the level in salt‐marsh food resources. Large differences between the δ15N values of mugilids and those of food sources (6·0‰ on average) showed that YOY are secondary consumers, similar to older individuals, when feeding in the salt marsh. YOY mugilids shift from browsing on pelagic prey to grazing on benthic resources from the salt marsh before reaching 30 mm LF. The results highlight the role of European salt marshes as nurseries for juvenile mugilids.  相似文献

Photosynthetic responses to salinity in two clones of Agrostis stolonifera   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Abstract The response of photosynthesis, Fe, to salinity was examined in two clones of Agrostis stolonifera, one derived from a salt marsh (SM) and the other from an inland site (IL). The response of young and old leaves was examined over one week of salt treatment and changes in leaf water relations and concentrations of Na+, Cl? and K+ ions were also monitored. Sodium+ and chloride? concentrations rose much more sharply in the older leaves of both clones and Fe declined to ca. zero by Day 4. Fe in the young leaves of the SM clone was unaffected by salt whilst the young leaves of the IL clone showed a 20% reduction in Fe within 24 h of salt application. This decline was due to a decline in stomatal conductance and a reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the mesophyll and was associated with a greater accumulation of Na+ and Cl? ions and loss of K+ ions than in the SM clone. The significance of the salt exclusion from the young leaves of the SM clone to its growth on the salt marsh is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Legume-Rhizobium symbiotic nitrogen (N2) fixation plays a critical role in sustainable nitrogen management in agriculture. The nitrogen fixed by the root nodules not only affects the nitrogen cycle of nature, but is also of great economic importance. A number of physiological and biochemical processes in the nodules are affected by salt stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) in moderating toxic effects of salt stress on nodular metabolism in Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh (pigeonpea) cv. Manak. Exposure of plants to salinity stress (4, 6 and 8 dSm?1) caused ionic imbalance, which resulted in increased Na+ and reduced K+ and Ca2+ contents in the nodules. Salinity induced increased synthesis and accumulation of proline and glycine betaine. Salt stress significantly increased the antioxidant enzyme activities in the nodules of all plants. Nodular growth suffered remarkably and a marked decline in nodule biomass was observed under salt stress. Leghemoglobin content and acetylene reduction activity (ARA) also declined under saline conditions. AM could significantly improve nodule dry mass, leghemoglobin content and nitrogenase activity, and phosphorus content under salt stress. Activities of antioxidant enzymes increased markedly in nodules of mycorrhizal-stressed plants. This study suggested a correlation between improved functional efficiency of nodules and higher osmolyte accumulation and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities of AM plants under stressed conditions relative to the nodules of uninoculated plants.  相似文献

A growing number of studies have assessed the functional equivalency of restored and natural salt marshes. Several of these have explored the use of functional trajectories to track the increase in restored marsh function over time; however, these studies have disagreed as to the usefulness of such models in long‐term predictions of restored marsh development. We compared indicators of four marsh functions (primary production, soil organic matter accumulation, sediment trapping, and maintenance of plant communities) in 6 restored and 11 reference (matched to restored marshes using principal components analysis) salt marshes in the Great Bay Estuary. The restored marshes were all constructed and planted on imported substrate and ranged in age from 1 to 14 years. We used marsh age in a space‐for‐time substitution to track constructed salt marsh development and explore the use of trajectories. A high degree of variability was observed among natural salt marsh sites, displaying the importance of carefully chosen reference sites. As expected, mean values for constructed site (n = 6) and reference site (n = 11) functions were significantly different. Using constructed marsh age as the independent variable and functional indicator values as dependent variables, nonlinear regression analyses produced several ecologically meaningful trajectories (r 2> 0.9), demonstrating that the use of different‐aged marshes can be a viable approach to developing functional trajectories. The trajectories illustrated that although indicators of some functions (primary production, sediment deposition, and plant species richness) may reach natural site values relatively quickly (<10 years), others (soil organic matter content) will take longer.  相似文献

In order to shed new light on the mechanisms of salt-mediated symbiotic N2-fixation inhibition, the effect of salt stress (75 mM) on N2-fixation in pea root nodules induced by R. leguminosarum was studied at the gene expression, protein production and enzymatic activity levels. Acetylene reduction assays for nitrogenase activity showed no activity in salt-stressed plants. To know whether salt inhibits N2-fixing activity at a molecular or at a physiological level, expression of the nifH gene, encoding the nitrogenase reductase component of the nitrogenase enzyme was analyzed by RT-PCR analysis of total RNA extracted from nodulated roots. The nifH messenger RNA was present both in plants grown in the presence and absence of salt, although a reduction was observed in salt-stressed plants. Similar results were obtained for the immunodetection of the nitrogenase reductase protein in Western-blot assays, indicating that nitrogen fixation failed mainly at physiological level. Given that nutrient imbalance is a typical effect of salt stress in plants and that Fe is a prosthetic component of nitrogenase reductase and other proteins required by symbiotic N2-fixation, as leghemoglobin, plants were analyzed for Fe contents by atomic absorption and the results confirmed that Fe levels were severely reduced in nodules developed in salt-stressed plants. In a previous papers (El-Hamdaoui et al., 2003b), we have shown that supplementing inoculated legumes with boron (B) and calcium (Ca) prevents nitrogen fixation decline under saline conditions stress. Analysis of salt-stressed nodules fed with extra B and Ca indicated that Fe content and nitrogenase activity was similar to that of non-stressed plants. These results indicate a linkage between Fe deprivation and salt-mediated failure of nitrogen fixation, which is prevented by B and Ca leading to increase of salt tolerance.  相似文献
