The functional significance of morphological variation of the human mandible and masticatory muscles
W A Weijs 《Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica》1989,27(1-2):149-162
A review is given of what is known about the functional significance of variation of the morphology of the human mandible and jaw muscles. First, the mandible is a lever transferring muscular forces to the teeth. The angle between corpus and ramus and the width of the ramus are particularly relevant in this respect as they determine the mechanical advantage of the lever system and the capacity for sagittal (open-close) movement. The stability of the mandible in asymmetric bites is especially affected by the ratio between the intermolar and intercondylar distances. The repertoire of bite forces that can be generated at any tooth and the loading pattern of the temporomandibular joint are strongly dependent on the relative size of the masseter, temporalis and medial pterygoid muscles. Second, executing its function as a lever, the mandible is subjected to shearing, bending and torsional forces. The bony parts harbouring the teeth, joints and muscle attachments serve to counter these forces; additional strength is needed in three areas i.e. in the symphysis, the condylar neck and in the transition area between corpus and ramus. In human populations there are clear-cut patterns of correlation between some facial skeletal traits, jaw joint morphology and strength and line of action of the jaw muscles. As a result, facial morphologies can be distinguished with marked differences in mechanical performance of their masticatory apparatus. It is suggested that they emerge as a result of diverging environmental influences during postnatal growth. 相似文献

Mandibular kinematic and standardized surface electromyography (sEMG) characteristics of masticatory muscles of subjects with short lasting TMD of mild-moderate severity were examined.Volunteers were submitted to clinical examination and questionnaire of severity. Ten subjects with TMD (age 27.3 years, SD 7.8) and 10 control subjects without TMD, matched by age, were selected.Mandibular movements were recorded during free maximum mouth opening and closing (O–C) and unilateral, left and right, gum chewing. sEMG of the masseter and temporal muscles was performed during maximum teeth clenching either on cotton rolls or in intercuspal position, and during gum chewing. sEMG indices were obtained. Subjects with TMD, relative to control subjects, had lower relative mandibular rotation at the end of mouth opening, larger mean number of intersection between interincisal O–C paths during mastication and smaller asymmetry between working and balancing side, with participation beyond the expected of the contralateral muscles (P < 0.05, t-test). Overall, TMD subjects showed similarities with the control subjects in several kinematic parameters and the EMG indices of the static test, although some changes in the mastication were observed. 相似文献

Cephalometric distances, angles, and proportions were evaluated for 32 children 5 to 8 years of age treated for unilateral cleft lip and palate. The children were age and sex matched with untreated controls with normal skeletal relationships. The unilateral cleft lip and palate sample was treated by the same surgeon and orthodontist using the same techniques and appliances. Measures of overall facial proportions, facial convexity, and prognathism were not significantly different between the two groups. The primary group differences pertain to the posterior aspect of the maxilla, which is vertically short in the unilateral cleft lip and palate sample. Horizontally, the maxilla of the unilateral cleft lip and palate children was significantly longer, producing a steeper palatal plane. In addition, the zygoma and orbits of unilateral cleft lip and palate children were somewhat retruded; the posterior cranial base and total mandibular length also were longer in the unilateral cleft lip and palate children. 相似文献

Background
Studies on the relationship between occlusal problems and the spine are of increasing interest. In this study, we monitored the sEMG activity of masticatory, neck, and trunk muscles during the treatment of scoliosis in young patients, and compared the data with a control of untreated group.Subjects and methods
Twelve white Caucasian patients (nine males and three females; mean age of 8.0 ± 1.5 years) with scoliosis and Class I occlusion (without crowding) were included in this study (study group). Fifteen healthy subjects (nine males and six females; mean age of 9.5 ± 0.8 years) were recruited as control group. The subjects were visited before they underwent the treatment of scoliosis, as well as after 3 (T1) and 6 months (T2) of their treatment for scoliosis. The patients were instructed to wear the device during sleep and during the day, according to the protocol given by their orthopedic. Results
The treated group showed statistically significant changes in the sEMG activity of masticatory, neck, and trunk muscles, both at rest and during MVC of the mandible with respect to T0. The masseter and the anterior temporalis showed a significant improvement in the asymmetry index from T0 to T2. On the other hand, subjects in the control group did not register much change. Conclusion
Our findings suggest that the use of a functional device for the treatment of scoliosis induces a significant reduction in the asymmetry index of the trunk muscles, as well as a significant increase in the contractility of masticatory muscles. 相似文献6.
One important limitation of mechanical analyses with strain gages is the difficulty in directly estimating patterns of stress or loading in skeletal elements from strain measurements. Because of the inherent anisotropy in cortical bone, orientation of principal strains and stresses do not necessarily coincide, and it has been demonstrated theoretically that such differences may be as great as 45 degrees (Cowin and Hart, 1990). Likewise, relative proportions of stress and strain magnitudes may differ. This investigation measured the elastic properties of a region of cortical bone on both the buccal and lingual surfaces of the lower border of the macaque mandible. The elastic property data was then combined with macaque mandibular strain data from published and a new in vivo strain gage experiment to determine directions and magnitudes of maximum and minimum principal stresses. The goal was to compare the stresses and strains and assess the differences in orientation and relative magnitude between them. The main question was whether these differences might lead to different interpretations of mandibular function. Elastic and shear moduli, and Poisson's ratios were measured using an ultrasonic technique from buccal and lingual cortical surfaces in 12 macaque mandibles. Mandibular strain gage data were taken from a published set of experiments (Hylander, 1979), and from a new experiment in which rosette strain gauges were fixed to the buccal and lingual cortices of the mandibular corpus of an adult female Macaca fascicularis, after which bone strain was recorded during mastication. Averaged elastic properties were combined with strain data to calculate an estimate of stresses in the mandibular corpus. The elastic properties were similar to those of the human mandibular cortex. Near its lower border, the macaque mandible was most stiff in a longitudinal direction, less stiff in an inferosuperior direction, and least stiff in a direction normal to the bone's surface. The lingual aspect of the mandible was slightly stiffer than the buccal aspect. Magnitudes of stresses calculated from average strains ranged from a compressive stress of -16.00 GPa to a tensile stress of 8.84 GPa. The orientation of the principal stresses depended on whether the strain gage site was on the working or balancing side. On the balancing side of the mandibles, maximum principal stresses were oriented nearly perpendicular to the lower border of the mandible. On the working side of the mandibles, the orientation of the maximum principal stresses was more variable than on the balancing side, indicating a larger range of possible mechanisms of loading. Near the lower border of the mandible, differences between the orientation of stresses and strains were 12 degrees or less. Compared to ratios between maximum and minimum strains, ratios between maximum and minimum stresses were more divergent from a ratio of 1.0. Results did not provide any major reinterpretations of mandibular function in macaques, but rather confirmed and extended existing work. The differences between stresses and strains on the balancing side of the mandible generally supported the view that during the power stroke the mandible was bent and slightly twisted both during mastication and transducer biting. The calculated stresses served to de-emphasize the relative importance of torsion. On the working side, the greater range of variability in the stress analysis compared to the strain analysis suggested that a more detailed examination of loadings and stress patterns in each individual experiment would be useful to interpret the results. Torsion was evident on the working side; but in a number of experiments, further information was needed to interpret other superimposed regional loading patterns, which may have included parasagittal bending and reverse parasagittal bending. 相似文献

The article describes part of a research project aiming to develop a new modular software tool for the individual dynamic numerical simulation of the human mandible using the finite element method (FEM). Its planned use in the clinical setting makes it very important to validate the results of the simulations. Here, the function of the masticatory muscles is to be tested. On the basis of biomechanical data from the literature, standard movements, such as closing the mouth, forward movement, lateral movement or backward movement, were dynamically simulated. Apart from muscle activity, the movements of the mandible are defined by the temporomandibular joint. At present, translating the condylar dynamics to the simulation still poses problems. For this reason, therefore, simulations of the two extreme cases "fixed" and "force-free" condyles are compared. While in the case of fixed condyles, some of the movements could be reproduced either not at all or only weakly, in the case of force-free condyles, all standard movements were reproduced qualitatively, albeit without the guiding effect of the joint capsule or the articular disc. 相似文献

This review summarizes findings concerning the unique developmental characteristics of mouse head muscles (mainly the masticatory
and tongue muscles) and compares their characteristics with those of other muscles. The developmental origin of the masticatory
muscles is the somitomeres, whereas the tongue and other muscles, such as the trunk (deep muscles of the back, body wall muscles)
and limb muscles, originate from the somites. The program controlling the early stages of masticatory myogenesis, such as
the specification and migration of muscle progenitor cells, is distinctly different from those in trunk and limb myogenesis.
Tongue myogenesis follows a similar regulatory program to that for limb myogenesis. Myogenesis and synaptogenesis in the masticatory
muscles are delayed in comparison with other muscles and are not complete even at birth, whereas the development of tongue
muscles proceeds faster than those of other muscles and ends at around birth. The regulatory programs for masticatory and
tongue myogenesis seem to depend on the developmental origins of the muscles, i.e., the origin being either a somite or somitomere,
whereas myogenesis and synaptogenesis seem to progress to serve the functional requirements of the masticatory and tongue
muscles.

Cross sections of normal and dystrophic digastric, masseter and temporalis muscles from 7-week-old mice were studied by histomorphological and histomorphometrical methods in the light microscope. The histomorphological part of the study revealed marked differences in morphology between normal and dystrophic muscles. Mutual differences between the dystrophic muscles were also observed. Comparisons of the parameters chosen for the histomorphometrical part of the study, i.e., cell size and number of centrally positioned nuclei in a given number of fibers, revealed that the digastric muscle seems to be the least affected and the masseter muscle the most affected by the disease. 相似文献

In the masticatory muscles, the development of bundles of the tendon was examined: they were composed of many collagen fibers and a few elastic fibers. In the masseter muscle, the property of the tendon differs in the distribution and size of collagen fibers and elastic fibers in comparison with those of other masticatory muscles. This difference is concerned with the kinetic force for the stress or the stretch of each tendon and muscle during jaw movement. 相似文献

In a previous paper (Hiraba and Sato 2004) we reported that an accurate mastication might be executed by the cortical processing in bilateral masticatory area (MA)and motor cortices. The aim of this study was to determine if cats with lesion of either unilateral or bilateral MA showed changes in mastication. After exploring mechanoreceptive fields and motor effects of mastication-related neurons (MRNs) in MA using the single unit recording and intracortical microstimulation methods, we made various lesions in MAs with injections of kainic acid (0.1%, 2.0 microl). Since the MA was divided into facial (F) and intraoral (I) projection areas as reported in the previous paper, cats with the unilateral lesion in F or I, and with the bilateral lesion in F and F, I and I or F and I (F on one side and I on other side) were prepared. Cats with unilateral lesion in F or I and with bilateral lesion in F and I showed no changes in mastication except for prolongation of the food intake and masticatory periods. Cats with bilateral lesion into F and F, or I and I showed wider jaw-opening during mastication. Particularly, the latter group showed enormous jaw-opening, delay in the start of mastication and difficulty in manipulating food on the tongue. In all cats with lesions of each type, masticatory and swallowing rhythms remained normal. These findings suggest that accurate mastication is executed by the close integration between F and F and I and I of the bilateral MA. 相似文献

With the aid of histochemical and electrophoretic techniques activities for esterase and esterprotease were investigated in the digastric and masseter muscles from normal and dystrophic mice. The substrates used were -naphthyl acetate and N-acetyl-l-alanine -naphthyl ester. According to the microscopic observations of the dystrophic muscles the histopathological changes in the masseter muscle were much more pronounced than in the digastric muscle. The connective tissue surrounding the myofibers of the dystrophic masseter contained a large number of cells with pronounced enzyme activity. Among them were mast cells that were strongly stained for esterprotease. The connective tissue of the dystrophic digastricus was much less infiltrated with cellular elements reacting for esterprotease. In zymograms the normal digastricus, the dystrophic masseter and the dystrophic digastricus showed a strong activity for certain isoenzymes that were absent or weakly expressed in the normal masseter. This study was supported by grand No. 12-6516 from the Danish Medical Research Council 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate longitudinal changes with age in the kinetic response to cycling at heavy-intensity exercise in boys and girls. Twenty-two prepubertal children (13 male, 9 female) carried out a series of exercise tests on two test occasions with a 2-yr interval. On each test occasion, the subject completed multiple transitions from baseline to 40% of the difference between their previously determined V-slope and peak O(2) uptake (Vo(2)) for 9 min on an electronically braked cycle ergometer. Each subject's breath-by-breath responses were interpolated to 1-s intervals, time aligned, and averaged. The data after phase 1 were fit with 1) a double exponential model and 2) a single exponential model within a fitting window that was previously identified to exclude the slow component. There were no significant differences in the parameters of the primary component between each model. Subsequent analysis was carried out using model 2. The Vo(2) slow component was computed as the difference between the amplitude of the primary component and the end-exercise Vo(2) and was expressed as the percent contribution to the total change in Vo(2). Over the 2-yr period, the primary time constant (boys 16.8 +/- 5.3 and 21.7 +/- 5.3 s, girls 21.1 +/- 8.1 and 26.4 +/- 8.4 s, first and second occasion, respectively) and the relative amplitude of the slow component (boys 9.4 +/- 4.6 and 13.8 +/- 5.3%, girls 10.3 +/- 2.4 and 15.5 +/- 2.8%, first and second occasion, respectively) significantly increased with no sex differences. The data demonstrate that children do display a slow-component response to exercise and are consistent with an age-dependent change in the muscles' potential for O(2) utilization. 相似文献

Basic impairments of the muscular fibre in fractures of the lower jaw with different localization within terms from several hours to several weeks in persons with various clinical course were studied with help of electronic microscopy. Following treatment of the injury with a "quiet" course, in the tissues studied there was activation of reparative processes up to normalization of the submicroscopic structures. Despite the given treatment, the injury accompanied with predominance of destructive changes in the muscular tissue. In the muscles, a disturbed permeability of depolarization waves was revealed, they causing contraction and relaxation of the muscles. 相似文献

The occurrence and distribution of muscle spindles was studied in histochemically and conventionally stained serial cross sections of 6-week-old and adult rat masticatory and suprahyoid muscles. Spindles were present in moderate to large numbers in jaw closers, but they were absent in jaw openers and two of four muscles of an accessory suprahyoid group. In jaw closers, 67% or more of the total spindle population was concentrated relatively distant from the temporomandibular joint, in muscle portions which contained large numbers of extrafusal fibers reacting strongly for oxidative enzymes. Because of their location, spindles in these portions should be stretched more and, subsequently, should respond with a greater afferent discharge at any given muscle length than spindles situated nearer to the joint. Spindles in jaw closers, especially the medial pterygoid and deep masseter, often occurred in clusters and complex forms near the terminal branching of intramuscular nerve trunks. No such concentrations were seen in the two muscles of the accessory suprahyoid group that had spindles. The association in jaw closers of spindles with extrafusal fibers high in oxidative enzyme activity is consistent with the view that spindles are the sensory component of a reflex system that recruits these fibers for finely-graded contractions in response to small internal length-changes of the muscle (Botterman et al., '78); however, in jaw openers and two muscles of the accessory suprahyoid group, the absence of spindles, coupled with the presence of large populations of extrafusal fibers high in oxidative enzyme activity, is not easily reconciled with this concept. 相似文献

1. At the age of 20 postnatal days, more than a half of the dogs (13/20) showed incisor eruption. At the age of 25 postnatal days, half of the dogs (10/20) showed molar eruption. 2. At the age of 24 postnatal days, half of the dogs (10/20) started chewing behavior. 3. EMG amplitudes of temporal muscle were larger than that of masseter muscle until 26.5 days after birth, but they were reversed at 26.5 days after birth. 4. This suggests that in dogs the earlier teeth erupted, the earlier the dominant oral behavior was changed from suckling to mastication, and concomitantly the dominant muscle for the oral behavior was changed from the temporal to the masseter muscle. 相似文献

Age-related changes in running kinematics have been reported in the literature using classical inferential statistics. However, this approach has been hampered by the increased number of biomechanical gait variables reported and subsequently the lack of differences presented in these studies. Data mining techniques have been applied in recent biomedical studies to solve this problem using a more general approach. In the present work, we re-analyzed lower extremity running kinematic data of 17 young and 17 elderly male runners using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification approach. In total, 31 kinematic variables were extracted to train the classification algorithm and test the generalized performance. The results revealed different accuracy rates across three different kernel methods adopted in the classifier, with the linear kernel performing the best. A subsequent forward feature selection algorithm demonstrated that with only six features, the linear kernel SVM achieved 100% classification performance rate, showing that these features provided powerful combined information to distinguish age groups. The results of the present work demonstrate potential in applying this approach to improve knowledge about the age-related differences in running gait biomechanics and encourages the use of the SVM in other clinical contexts. 相似文献
