ABSTRACTMetamorphosis season of megalopae to the first crab stage in snow crab Chionoecetes opilio and red snow crab C. japonicus was inferred by culturing wild-born megalopae collected from the Sea of Japan. Metamorphosis occurred from late June to late July (mainly in July) in snow crab, and from early July to early October (mainly from August to September) in red snow crab. The number of days required from the time of collection to metamorphosis was less than the intermoult period previously reported for snow crab megalopae. However, the developmental period of the megalopae was estimated as substantially longer in red snow crab than in snow crab. Previous studies have shown that the hatching season and the period of the zoeal stage in both two species are similar. These results suggest that a different metamorphosis season between the two species would be due to a difference in their megalopal intermoult period. 相似文献

For most of the family Porcellanidae, which comprises 283 species, larval development remains to be described. Full development has been only described for 52 species, while part of the larval cycle has been described for 45 species. The importance of knowing the complete larval development of a species goes beyond allowing the identification of larval specimens collected in the plankton. Morphological larval data also constitute a support to cladistic techniques used in the establishment of the phylogenetic status (see Hiller et al. 2006, Marco-Herrero et al. 2013). Nevertheless, the literature on the larval development of this family is old and widely dispersed and in many cases it is difficult to collect the available information on a particular taxon. Towards the aim of facilitating future research, all information available on the larval development of porcellanids has been compiled. Following the taxonomic checklist of Porcellanidae proposed by Osawa and McLaughlin (2010), a checklist has been prepared that reflects the current knowledge about larval development of the group including larval stages and the method used to obtain the larvae, together with references. Those species for which the recognised names have been changed according to Osawa and McLaughlin (2010) are indicated. 相似文献

Mud crabs, Scylla spp. , are commercially important in many Indo-Pacific countries. The larval development of mud crabs has been reported previously as five zoeal and one megalopal stages. This paper reports larval rearing experiments that revealed variability in larval developmental stages in the mud crab Scylla paramamosain, one of four mud crab species. In addition to normal five zoeal stages, an alternative pathway of developing through six zoeal stages was observed for the crab. There were evidences suggested that the appearance of the additional Zoea-VI larvae was associated with unfavourable dietary conditions, including poor quality of diet, inadequate quantity of dietary supply and a period of starvation for newly hatched larvae. Based on exuviae and larval specimens, the morphology of the additional Zoea-VI larvae was described. 相似文献

The spider crab Platymaia wyvillethomsoni was reared in the laboratory, from hatching to the megalopal stage at 20°C. The larval development comprises two zoeal stages and a megalopa. The zoeal stages are described for the first time and compared with those of the four known species of the family Inachidae from the northern Pacific. The zoeal characters (carapace spines, antenna, mouthpart appendages, pleon and telson fork) of P. wyvillethomsoni are significantly different from those of two Achaeus species from northern Pacific and other inachid genera (Inachus and Macropodia) from the Atlantic. Therefore, this species should not be placed in the family Inachidae based on zoeal morphology. A provisional key for the identification of known zoeae of the family from the northern Pacific is provided. 相似文献

Summary The larval, megalopal and early juvenile stages of Pagurus granosimanus are described, illustrated and compared with other North Pacific species of the genus. Morphologically, the zoeae of P. granosimanus appear most similar to the Japanese P. brachiomastus in the majority of characters, but share the endopodal setation of the third maxilliped with a second Japanese species, P. pectinatus. The megalopae of P. granosimanus are unlike those of other North Pacific species in having 5+5 marginal setae on the telson, rather than the customary 4+4, or less frequent 3+3. Comparison of juvenile characters is limited to pleopodal changes among the regional species for which data are available. P. granosimanus is unusual in undergoing complete pleopodal loss at the second crab stage with return of left pleopods in the fourth stage. 相似文献

The entire cycle of larval development of the spider crab Pugettia quadridens (de Haan, 1850) (Decapoda: Majidae), widespread in Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) is studied under the laboratory conditions. The development cycle of this species comprises prezoea, zoea I, zoea II, and megalopa. At a temperature of 18–20° C larval development took from 11 to 15 days. Zoea II is described in detail for the first time. Many morphological characters are found distinguishing zoea and megalopa of P. Quadridens in Russian waters from the larvae of this species in Japanese and Korean waters. Some characters of larvae are similar in P. Quadridens and the related species of the genus Pugettia. The larvae of P. Quadridens occur in the plankton of Vostok Bay from late June to late October with a density up to 5 ind/m3 at a surface water temperature of 13–21°C. They are easily distinguished from the other brachyuran larvae of this region by the absence of lateral spines on the carapace.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Biologiya Morya, Kornienko, Korn. 相似文献

The larval development of three crabs of the Varunidae family, (Hemigrapsus sanguineus, H. penicillatus, and H. longitarsis), widely spread in Russian waters of the Sea of Japan, were studied under laboratory conditions. At a temperature of 20–22°C and a salinity of 32‰ about 30% of larvae a complete developmental cycle, including five zoeal stages and megalopa, took from 22 to 30 days. All larval stages are illustrated and described in detail. Zoea I and zoea II of the studied crabs are not distinguishable. Zoea III–V of these species differ in the number of dorsomedial setae on the abdominal somite I and in the number of setae on the posterodorsal arch. The megalopae of three Hemigrapsus species possess a different number of segments, aesthetascs and setae on the antennular exopod. In spite of the great similarity of larvae of genera Hemigrapsus and Eriocheir, the latter possesses a number of distinctive features in all developmental stages, supporting the separation of these genera. 相似文献

The morphology and function of the male reproductive system in the spider crab Maja brachydactyla, an important commercial species, is described using light and electron microscopy. The reproductive system follows the pattern found among brachyuran with several peculiarities. The testis, known as tubular testis, consists of a single, highly coiled seminiferous tubule divided all along by an inner epithelium into germinal, transformation, and evacuation zones, each playing a different role during spermatogenesis. The vas deferens (VD) presents diverticula increasing in number and size towards the median VD, where spermatophores are stored. The inner monostratified epithelium exocytoses the materials involved in the spermatophore wall formation (named substance I and II) and spermatophore storage in the anterior and median VD, respectively. A large accessory gland is attached to the posterior VD, and its secretions are released as granules in apocrine secretion, and stored in the lumen of the diverticula as seminal fluids. A striated musculature may contribute to the formation and movement of spermatophores and seminal fluids along the VD. The ejaculatory duct (ED) shows a multilayered musculature and a nonsecretory pseudostratified epithelium, and extrudes the reproductive products towards the gonopores. A tissue attached to the ED is identified as the androgenic gland. 相似文献

In this study, we analyzed the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of a hydrothermal vent crab Xenograpsus testudinatus (Decapoda: Brachyura) obtained from the hydrothermal vents off Kueishantao Island, Taiwan, which extend from the deep sea Okinawa Trench. The mitogenome of X. testudinatus was 15,796 bp in length and contained the same 37 genes (e.g. 2 rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, and 13 PCGs) found in other metazoan mitogenomes. Analysis of the structural mt gene order in X. testudinatus revealed that the 13 PCGs, excluding a translocation of ND6-Cyt b cluster, were similarly ordered when compared to the pancrustacean ground pattern; however the tRNAs were severely rearranged. Phylogenetic analysis of decapod mitogenomes showed that the molecular taxonomy of the vent crab was in accordance with its morphological systematics. Together, these findings suggest that the vent crab studied here has little mitochondrial genetic variation when compared with morphologically defined conspecifics from other marine habitats. 相似文献

Larval development in crabs is characterized by a striking double metamorphosis in the course of which the animals change
from a pelagic to a benthic life style. The larval central nervous system has to provide an adequate behavioural repertoire
during this transition. Thus, processes of neuronal reorganization and refinement of the early larval nervous system could
be expected to occur in the metamorphosing animal. In order to follow identified sets of neurons throughout metamorphosis,
whole mount preparations of the brain and ventral nerve cord of laboratory reared spider crab larvae (Hyas araneus) were labelled with an antibody against the neurotransmitter serotonin. The system of serotonin-immunoreactive cell bodies,
fibres and neuropils is well-developed in newly hatched larvae. Most immunoreative structures are located in the protocerebrum,
with fewer in the suboesophaegeal ganglia, while the thoracic and abdominal ganglia initially comprise only a small number
of serotonergic neurons and fibres. However, there are significant alterations in the staining pattern through larval development,
some of which are correlated to metamorphic events. Accordingly, new serotonin-immunoreactive cells are added to the early
larval set and the system of immunoreactive fibres is refined. These results are compared to the serotonergic innervation
in other decapod crustaceans. 相似文献

Summary The first zoeal stages of eleven species of Sesarmidae from the Indo-West Pacific were obtained from ovigerous females. Those of Labuanium scandens, L. rotundatum, L. trapezoideum, L. politum, Metasesarma aubryi, Pseudosesarma crassimanum, Stelgistra stormi, and Sesarmops impressum, are described for the first time, while the first zoeal stages of Clistocoeloma merguiense, Metasesarma obesum and Sesarmops intermedium are re-described. Larval characters of all these species are compared with previously described ones for the family and morphological features are re-evaluated. Minute spines on the telson of the zoeae are described as a new larval character in Sesarmidae and their presence or absence in other grapsoid groups is discussed. The results demonstrate that a recurrent combination of reliable larval characters distinguishes zoeae and megalopae of the examined sesarmids from the rest of the Grapsoidea. This appears to be consistent with recent studies that redefine the Sesarmidae. 相似文献

Orcovita miruku, new species, is described from Ishigaki Island, southern Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Orcovita miruku is easily distinguished from the other congeners by the presence of three teeth (including external orbital angle) on the
anterolateral margin of the carapace. Orcovita angulata may be allied to O. miruku, but there are a number of differences in the characters of the carapace and the ambulatory legs. The holotype, obtained
from an anchiline pool in a limestone excavation, is the only specimen collected thus far, and this is the first record of
an anchiline crab from Japan. 相似文献

The stomach of decapods is a complex organ with specialized structures that are delimited by a cuticle. The morphology and ontogeny of the stomach are largely described, but few studies have focused on the morphology of its cuticle. This study examined the morphology of the stomach cuticle of cardiac sacs, gastric mill ossicles, cardio-pyloric valve and pyloric filters, and during various stages (zoea I and II, megalopa, first juvenile, and adult) of the common spider crab Maja brachydactyla using dissection, histology and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that cuticle morphology varies among structures (e.g., cardiac sacs, urocardiac ossicle, cardio-pyloric valve, pyloric filters), within a single structure (e.g., different sides of the urocardiac ossicle) and among different life stages. The cuticle during the larval stages is very thin and the different layers (epicuticle, exocuticle, and endocuticle) are infrequently distinguishable by histology. Major changes during larval development regarding cuticle morphology are observed after the molt to megalopa, including the increment in thickness in the gastric mill ossicles and cardio-pyloric valve, and the disappearance of the long thickened setae of the cardio-pyloric valve. The cuticle of all the stomach structures in the adults is thicker than in larval and juvenile stages. The cuticle varies in thickness, differential staining affinity and morphology of the cuticle layers. The structure–function relationship of the cuticle morphology is discussed. 相似文献

Prevalence of bacteria in the spermathecae of female snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio (Brachyura: Majidae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The spermathecal contents of primiparous, multiparous and barren female snow crabs were observed by a scanning electron microscope. Bacteria colonies were observed with a significantly higher frequency in the spermathecae of primiparous and old barren females. Bacteria infect the spermathecae and destroy the spermatophores and spermatozoa inside. These observations suggest that bacteria in the spermathecae do not exclude opportunistic microbes by modifying pH of the medium as suggested in the literature. The prevalence of bacteria in primiparous and old barren females suggests that they infect individuals with a weak anti-microbial protection. The absence of bacteria in the highly acidic seminal fluid derived from males upon copulation suggests that it may provide anti-microbial protection. Bacteria do not seem to be able to survive in an anaerobic environment for a long period. 相似文献

Complete larval development of Crangon hakodatei Rathbun isdescribed, based on material hatched in the laboratory fromovigerous females. The species has six zoeal stages and onepostlarval stage. The morphological characters of the larvaland postlarval stages are described with illustrative figuresand compared with those of two congeneric species. The zoealstages of C. hakodatei can be distinguished from those of otherCrangon species in the number of segments of the antennule peduncle, the number of setae on the antennal scale and basis of the maxillipeds, and the stages of appearance of pereiopods. The first zoealstage in the seven species of Crangon are compared and an annotatedkey for distinguishing them is also provided. 相似文献
