Two life-history variants of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), anadromous and lake-resident, have been previously identified in lakes of Southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. In accordance with classical life-history theory, it is hypothesised that anadromous charr will delay maturation in both size and age, and have increased fecundity (per spawning event) in comparison with lake-resident charr. Sagittal otoliths and biological data were collected for both life-history variants within the three studied lakes: Iqalugaarjuit, Qasigiat and Qinngu. Sagittal otoliths were embedded in epoxy resin, cross-sectioned for age determination, and imaged for back-calculation (size and age). Back-calculated data in each lake were fit to von Bertalanffy growth models for each life-history variant and compared via analysis of residual sums of squares. Anadromous charr had greater mean size at maturity and experienced a delay in mean age at maturity in comparison with lake-residents. The relationship between size and fecundity or egg diameter did not differ between the two life-history variants. Growth models indicate that the overall growth coefficients of lake-resident and anadromous charr were different in all three studied lakes. The Brody growth coefficient for all lake-resident charr populations was greater than anadromous individuals indicating that maximum length was reached at a rapid rate, resulting in a smaller asymptotic length. Indirect evidence suggests that anadromous and lake-resident charr belong to one reproductive population. Future genetic analysis is necessary to further determine the degree of divergence between the life-history variants.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation in the diet of anadromous Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, was determined from over 2500 prey-containing stomachs collected from three stock complex areas in northern Labrador. Based on the percent wet mass, sand lance, Ammodytes spp., capelin, Mallotus villosus, and sculpins, Triglops spp. and Myoxocephalus spp., were the most important components of the diet in the Voisey stock complex, with capelin, sand lance, and hyperiid amphipods, Parathemisto spp., dominating in the Nain region. In contrast, hyperiid amphipods and sculpins were the main prey items in the more northern Hebron–Saglek complex indicating that diet differs among stocks, and at times over limited spatial scales. The relative importance of prey varied with size of predator. Mean weight of charr has declined over time (p < 0.01), and for one stock complex, is highly correlated with the average quantity of capelin found in the stomachs (r = 0.66, p < 0.001). Dietary shifts observed in anadromous charr in some areas of northern Labrador could be associated, in part, with changes in the distribution of capelin in the northwest Atlantic Ocean, possibly as a result of anomalous ocean climate conditions.  相似文献

Relationships between the degree of anadromy, sex ratio and parr growth of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were investigated in Lake Storvatn in Hammerfest town, by estimating the densities of resident and anadromous charr in the lake, and by comparing the smolt characteristics of fish captured in the outlet river with those of fish of the same age in the lake. About two-thirds of the charr older than 5 years were anadromous. The sex ratio of smolts was approximately 1 : 1 and the frequency of mature male parr in the lake was low. As females tended to dominate the mature portion of the anadromous population, there was probably a relatively higher mortality among sea-run male smolts. The youngest smolts (3+ and 4+) were probably recruited from fast-growing parr in the littoral zone, while older smolts (>4+) may have been recruited from all habitats in the lake.  相似文献

Synopsis Seasonal changes in hypoosmoregulatory ability were compared in landlocked and anadromous strains of Arctic charr and Atlantic salmon. Seawater adaptability was assessed using periodic 48 h seawater challenge tests with 25. seawater. The landlocked strains of Arctic charr, two from northern Sweden and one from Southern Norway, displayed similar seasonal changes in seawater adaptability as the anadromous strain. Seawater tolerance increased during spring and remained high until the end of July — early August after which it declined. The two strains of Atlantic salmon displayed different seasonal patterns in hypoosmoregulatory ability. The anadromous strain showed a pronounced seasonal pattern with maximal seawater adaptability in early June. In contrast, seawater tolerance in the landlocked strain improved steadily during spring and remained high until late autumn. During the period of enhanced seawater tolerance, hypoosmoregulatory ability increased significantly with body size in both Arctic charr and anadromous Atlantic salmon. The minimum size at which fish were able to regulate plasma sodium following seawater transfer at a level comparable to freshwater levels (<170 mmol I–1) differed significantly between anadromous Atlantic salmon (ca. 14 cm) and Arctic charr (ca. 22 cm). The results show that seasonal changes in hypoosmoregulatory ability are present in both Atlantic salmon and Arctic charr, and that these physiological traits are retained in the corresponding landlocked strains. However, the seasonal pattern of seawater adaptability as well as the minimum size at which seawater tolerance occurs differs between the two species.  相似文献

Fish die-offs during warming events have rarely or ever been recorded within arctic watersheds. The 2001 mortality of anadromous brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) in the Sutton River in the Hudson Bay Lowlands may be the first documented case of an increasing number of such events, as climate warming affects north latitude systems. Warm air temperatures (daily maximums >30°C) combined with unusual thermal stratification conditions in the upstream lake appeared to have created the lethal conditions, but changing marine environments likely triggered the event. This highly productive brook charr population depends heavily on the local marine environment, not only for food, but also to moderate the continental climate of the region. The steadily shortening ice season in Hudson Bay appears to be greatly increasing the vulnerability of anadromous stocks to warming events.  相似文献

We studied abundance, annual survival, and recruitment of nine lake charr, Salvelinus namaycush, populations at the Experimental Lakes Area, Ontario, for periods of 9–24 years. We used the Jolly–Seber mark-recapture method to evaluate abundance and annual survival in all populations, and total catches of individual year classes to evaluate recruitment. Seven populations were unexploited and unaffected by whole-lake experiments. One population was exploited prior to mark-recapture study and another was affected by experimental acidification. Abundance ranged from 8 to 24 fish ha–1 in the unaffected populations. Annual survival ranged from 78% to 93%yr–1 in all populations except the exploited population. This population may have been additionally affected by northern pike, Esox lucius, predation. Yearly recruitment was relatively constant in all populations and related to lake charr abundance. Lake charr abundance did not recover in populations affected by exploitation or acidification. Unexploited lake charr populations were characterized by relatively constant abundance, high annual survival, and relatively constant annual recruitment.  相似文献

The Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus exhibits 1–4 sympatric morphs in postglacial lakes, of which one or two are epibenthic zoobenthos feeders, one is a limnetic planktivore and one is a piscivorous form. In addition, northern rivers support partly migratory populations with anadromous and freshwater resident fish. The morphs vary in their coloration, morphology, life history, behaviour and genetic characteristics. The morphs usually differentiate according to their ontogenetic stage at maturity, which parallels paedomorphism in amphibians. The young usually start as epibenthic zoobenthivores, but may become pelagic at a certain size according to the predation risk experienced at that time. From a length of > 20–25 cm, charr start to become piscivorous. The proportion of piscivorous fish increases with increasing body size. In partly anadromous populations, fish that mature before smolting become freshwater resident, the others anadromous. In some rivers, the morphs occupy separate niches (epibenthic and limnetic), from emergence onwards. The morphs exhibit different degrees of reproductive isolation that vary from a high degree of interbreeding to complete isolation. Usually, they spawn within morph (assortative mating), but alternative male mating behaviour (sneaking, fighting) may occur in stream‐spawning populations and at great depths in lakes. Morphologically specialized morphs appear to feed more effectively than intermediate forms, and selection according to feeding mode, site fidelity and associated assortative mating are prerequisites for the evolution of the different morphs. Charr morphs develop into stable feeding niches under conditions of intense intraspecific competition when there is little competition with other species. Sympatric morphs exhibit different degrees of speciation, but similar morphs in different systems are not individual species because of (1) their polyphyletic origin, (2) the supporting systems are often young, transient environments making the future situation for the populations uncertain, and (3) the genetic differentiation among morphs is low. Sympatric morphs may interbreed and produce fertile hybrids. Nevertheless, sympatric charr morphs should be managed as separate species. Changes in the natural conditions or human impacts to which the morphs are adapted will have a strong influence on the persistence and survival of each different morph.  相似文献

A common dimorphism in life-history tactic in salmonids is the presence of an anadromous pathway involving a migration to sea followed by a freshwater reproduction, along with an entirely freshwater resident tactic. Although common, the genetic and environmental influence on the adoption of a particular life-history tactic has rarely been studied under natural conditions. Here, we used sibship-reconstruction based on microsatellite data and an 'animal model' approach to estimate the additive genetic basis of the life-history tactic adopted (anadromy vs. residency) in a natural population of brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis. We also assess its genetic correlation with phenotypic correlated traits, body size and body shape. Significant heritability was observed for life-history tactic (varying from 0.52 to 0.56 depending on the pedigree scenario adopted) as well as for body size (from 0.44 to 0.50). There was also a significant genetic correlation between these two traits, whereby anadromous fish were genetically associated with bigger size at age 1 (r(G) = -0.52 and -0.61). Our findings thus indicate that life-history tactics in this population have the potential to evolve in response to selection acting on the tactic itself or indirectly via selection on body size. This study is one of the very few to have successfully used sibship-reconstruction to estimate quantitative genetic parameters under wild conditions.  相似文献

Brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) is a sentinel fish species which requires clean, cold water habitats. As such, many jurisdictions in the United States where brook charr are present use this species as an indicator of ecosystem health. In Michigan, groundwater-dominated streams are currently being impacted by increased groundwater withdrawal and land use/land cover changes which alter stream temperatures and their flow, and thus have the potential to significantly influence brook charr production and behavior. We quantified the influence of groundwater withdrawal and land use alteration on thermal habitat availability for brook charr using a groundwater modeling tool that estimated changes in baseflow to a stream segment based on changes to the groundwater system due to groundwater withdrawal and changes in rates of recharge related to landscape changes within a watershed. Projected stream temperature changes were calculated using a stream temperature modeling tool and compared to the range of temperature preferenda for brook charr in order to evaluate the potential impact of policy decisions regarding water extraction and land use/cover changes. The models predicted relatively small changes in both stream baseflow and consequently, stream temperature, with increased groundwater withdrawal rates. Land use/land cover alterations which we analyzed were shown to either mitigate or enhance the loss of brook charr thermal habitat as a result of groundwater withdrawal, depending on its relationship to recharge dynamics. This study emphasizes the importance of collaboration between water, land, and fisheries managers to ensure brook charr population viability, productivity, and sustainability in the face of environmental change, increasing water use and development in the watershed.  相似文献

Brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, often display alternate life history styles in coastal areas. In the Laval River, some brook charr remain freshwater residents, while others undergo seasonal migrations between freshwater and saltwater environments. In the present paper, we examined physiological (electrolyte concentrations, gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity, and thyroid hormone levels) as well as genetic differences (neutral genetic markers) between anadromous and river-resident fish from the Laval River. We also examined how artificial rearing conditions affected seasonal variations in the osmoregulatory physiology of a domestic strain derived from wild anadromous fish. Sympatric anadromous and resident forms of brook charr of the Laval River exhibited differences in gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity, plasma thyroxine (T4), and triidothyronine (T3) concentrations. In domestic anadromous charr, rearing conditions during development had no negative impact on osmoregulatory ability or on gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity. These results argued for an important hereditary component of gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity. However, the spring increase in T4 was present only in wild fish. Significant differences observed at microsatellite loci further suggested that at least some level of reproductive isolation may have occurred between anadromous and resident charr in the Laval River.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in hypoosmoregulatory capacity were studied in hatchery-reared offspring of a high-Arctic strain of anadromous Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, from Svalbard (79°N) and a sub-Arctic strain from Hammerfest, north Norway (70°N). The fish were held in freshwater under simulated, natural light conditions (Tromsø, 69°N) and natural water temperatures, and hypoosmoregulatory capacity was determined by seawater challenge tests between February and November. An improved hypoosmoregulatory capacity was seen in both strains at the time when their wild conspecifics migrate to the sea. The time when maximum hypoosmoregulatory capacity was achieved differed significantly between the two strains, suggesting that there may be genetic differences between the two populations in how environmental cues (e.g. temperature, photoperiod) entrain the development of seawater tolerance. The development and loss of hypoosmoregulatory capacity seemed to be more rapid and abrupt in the Svalbard charr than in the Hammerfest charr. This is hypothesised to be an adaptation to the stochastic and unpredictable variations in the time when the fish are allowed to migrate in the high-Arctic, and the need to prevent migration in years when the ice break occurs very late.  相似文献

Two groups of anadromous Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus ) (size 200–350 mm) reared in heated water (6–12° C) under simulated natural photoperiod were individually tagged and released in spring 1988. The fish were released at two sites, in the estuary of the River Halselva and in the fjord, 2 km from the river mouth. Growth, timing of migration and survival of these hatchery-reared fish was compared to that of wild anadromous charr of the same size over a 4-year period. The hatchery-reared charr had poorer growth than the wild fish during their first year in sea water. They also resided longer in the sea and had a slightly lower survival than wild fish. During the second year, hatchery-reared charr displayed good growth, and after the third sea-season the fish were ready for slaughter at a size of approximately 800g. The results suggest that the successful development of Arctic charr ranching will be dependent upon production and release strategies that lead to improved migratory and feeding behaviour of the fish during their first season at sea.  相似文献

Within the populations of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus in Storvatn and Rungavatn, Norway, fish that attained the largest size in the late parr stage migrated as 4+ smolts, fish that attained a medium size became 5+ smolts, and the smallest parr became lake residents. Within the last 2 years of the parr stage, those that became anadromous had a lower growth rate during the winter and early summer than those that became resident, and vice versa in late summer. Thus, anadromous fish grew faster in the parr stage, but in years prior to migration, their growth pattern seemed to differ from that of parr that became resident. Due to early size differences between parr that became anadromous or resident, it is suggested that some of the basis for the decision to smoltify or not in charr depends on the growth rate through the whole parr stage, but with significant modification by the local environment. Rungavatn parr had a significantly higher population density (5 ×), higher lipid content and mortality, an earlier maturation, a lower rate of growth, and only one-third the degree of anadromy than those from Storvatn. It is suggested that the two charr populations have evolved different life-history adaptations due to unequal growth, energy allocation and competition opportunities in the lakes.  相似文献

Otoliths of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, from north Labrador were examined to gather life history information pertinent to anadromous migrations. Wavelength dispersive electron microprobe measurements confirm the presence of strontium in otolith tissue. Trace element analyses of charr otoliths imply that otolith strontium/calcium concentration ratios are related to external environmental factors with salinity having a great influence. Otoliths clearly record habitat shifts consistent with migration across major salinity boundaries. Most charr first migrate to sea following at least 2 years in freshwater. Generally, when anadromy begins, it continues annually. Robust relationships in otolith chemistry, combined with macrostructure patterns in field-captured specimens, provide time-series data describing individual migrational histories. Validation studies are still required in order to couple information contained within daily increments with chemical analyses to infer additional temporal events in diadromous migrations. The circumpolar Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, is ideal for studying how environmental factors affect life history in fishes. Charr populations demonstrate a tremendous ecological plasticity and adaptations to harsh environments. Arctic charr is the only freshwater fish on Svalbard, including anadromous, resident, and landlocked stocks. Freshwater lake systems on Svalbard are characterized by very low water temperatures, long-term or even permanent ice cover, and low levels of nutrients. Food is thus limited and may lead to growth stagnation and early maturity in Arctic charr. The individual growth pattern may alternatively follow a sigmoid-shaped curve, caused by a shift to either cannibalistic or anadromous (migration to sea) behaviour. In lake systems that include migratory charr, the population may consist of a mixture of parr, postsmolt, and adult migratory individuals, as well as small-sized resident, large-sized resident (cannibals), and large formerly resident individuals transformed to anadromy. Our study in the Lake Dieset watercourse (79°N), Svalbard, demonstrates that the annual water flow in the outlet river is strongly correlated to air temperatures and provides a passage to the sea, allowing the charr access to the nutrient-rich seawater environment, during at most two months each year. During one of the years studied, the youngest and small-sized part of the sea-going stock was prevented from ascending the river and probably suffered mortality during winter. The migratory window of the Arctic charr in Lake Dieset is therefore highly variable among years and thus unpredictable. We hypothesize that in worst case scenarios (cold years, low water discharge), climatic variations may occasionally prevent charr from migrating upstream in Svalbard lake systems in late autumn, resulting in high mortality in the population.  相似文献

Little research has been conducted on effects of iteroparous anadromous fishes on Arctic lakes. We investigated trophic ecology, fish growth, and food web structure in six lakes located in Nunavut, Canada; three lakes contained anadromous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) whereas three lakes did not contain Arctic charr. All lakes contained forage fishes and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush; top predator). Isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) of fishes and invertebrates did not differ between lakes with and without anadromous Arctic charr; if anadromous Arctic charr deliver marine-derived nutrients and/or organic matter to freshwater lakes, these inputs could not be detected with δ13C and/or δ15N. Lake trout carbon (C):nitrogen (N) and condition were significantly higher in lakes with Arctic charr (C:N = 3.42, K = 1.1) than in lakes without Arctic charr (C:N = 3.17, K = 0.99), however, and ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) condition was significantly lower in lakes with Arctic charr (K = 0.58) than in lakes without Arctic charr (K = 0.64). Isotope data indicated that pre-smolt and resident Arctic charr may be prey for lake trout and compete with ninespine stickleback. Linear distance metrics applied to isotope data showed that food webs were more compact and isotopically redundant in lakes where Arctic charr were present. Despite this, lake trout populations in lakes with Arctic charr occupied a larger isotope space and showed greater inter-individual isotope differences. Anadromous Arctic charr appear to affect ecology and feeding of sympatric freshwater species, but effects are more subtle than those seen for semelparous anadromous species.  相似文献

Repeated measurements of food intake made on juvenile Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , held under different rearing conditions enabled examination of the effects of environmental manipulations on both intra– and inter–individual variations in food intake to be made. This permitted the assessment of the influences of differential food acquisition on individual growth rates and biomass gain. When charr were held in isolation individual fish showed relatively little day–to–day variability in food intake and inter–individual differences in intake were small ('base–fine' values). All fish exhibited positive rates of growth and the overall range was narrow. Nevertheless, there was a highly significant positive correlation between food intake and growth, indicating that those individuals that consumed the greatest quantities of food were also those that had the highest rates of weight gain. The rearing of charr in groups led to increases in both intra– and inter–individual variations in food intake to levels considerably above 'base–line'. This increased variability in food intake was reflected in rates of weight gain being more variable amongst the charr reared in groups, with fish that lost weight often being recorded. Manipulation of the rearing environment had marked influences upon intra–individual variability in food intake, inter–individual differences in food acquisition and rates of weight gain. High stocking densities and exposure of the fish to moderate water currents were most effective in reducing levels of variability to approach those observed under 'base–line' conditions.  相似文献

Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, tend to form stunted populations presumably due to competition for limited resources. In this context a long-term intensive fishery programme aiming at reducing charr density, and thereby increasing growth and harvestable sizes, was initiated in the early 1980s in a Norwegian alpine lake. Here we present long-term data on catch statistics and changes in mean weights of charr caught with gill nets on spawning grounds, as well as changes in mean weight of juvenile charr caught with funnel traps during the 1990s. Furthermore, we present results from shorter-term studies on growth, size- and age-distribution, and size-related habitat and resource utilisation of Arctic charr and brown trout, Salmo trutta, in this lake. Mean weight (± SD) of charr caught on the spawning grounds increased significantly from 129.8g (±11.9) in the years 1982–1990 to 213.1g (±37.8) in the years 1996–1999, whereas catch per unit of effort decreased significantly. Mean weight of juveniles caught in funnel traps increased significantly from 21.2g (±6.9) in 1993 to 41.9g (±14.8) in 1999. Apparently the increase in weight of spawning charr coincided with the onset of trap fishing for juvenile charr. Compared to generally shallow dwelling trout, charr grew rapidly and were generally found in deeper areas of the lake. Charr went through a distinct size-related niche shift from mainly consuming small zooplankton in the pelagic to consuming large benthic prey in shallower waters. Resource and habitat utilisation in different size-groups of charr and trout are discussed with respect to possible competitive and predatory intra- and interspecific interactions, and with regard to management of charr populations.  相似文献

Synopsis We tested the hypothesis that anadromous salmonids are guided on their homeward migration by population-specific pheromones. Our findings do not support the hypothesis. Wild migrant Arctic charr,Salvelinus alpinus, from Ikarut River, Labrador were transferred and held in a tributary previously uninhabited by anadromous fish. None of the charr migrating up Ikarut River entered the tributary after fish were transferred. Similarly, migrant charr, which were caught in Ikarut River and released in the tributary below the captive fish, did not remain in the tributary. We re-evaluated the data which have been used to uphold the concept of pheromone attraction in salmonid migration and concluded that support for the hypothesis is unsubstantiated.  相似文献

The north and south basins of Windermere in the English Lake District, UK, support autumn- and spring-spawning populations of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, which have been studied since the 1930s. Continuous investigations of the population dynamics of Arctic charr at this lake have involved gill netting since 1939, collection of fishery catch-per-unit-effort data since 1966, and hydroacoustic surveys since 1990. Analysis of these and associated long-term data on the abiotic environment and other components of the fish communities revealed recently contrasting fortunes of the Arctic charr populations of the north and south basins, the latter of which has been significantly impacted by eutrophication while both basins have shown elevated water temperatures and increasing roach, Rutilus rutilus, populations. Despite the introduction of phosphate stripping in 1992 and some subsequent initial improvement, the hypolimnion of the south basin still remains significantly eutrophicated and the fishery catch-per-unit-effort in this basin is now at record low levels. In addition, the spatial distribution of roach has expanded to form significant components of the fish communities of inshore and offshore surface habitats, where this cyprinid may compete with Arctic charr for zooplanktonic prey. It is concluded that the Arctic charr populations of Windermere, particularly those of the south basin, currently face a number of significant environmental pressures and continued management action is required to ensure their survival.  相似文献
