Effects of plant extracts on fecundity and fertility of mosquitoes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Rearing of Culex quinquefasciatus , Anopheles stephensi and Aedes aegypti larvae in water at concentrations less than the critical concentration for inhibition of adult emergence in 50% of treated larvae (EC50) of the ethyl acetate fractions of Calophyllum inophyllum seed and leaf, Solanum suratense and Samadera indica leaf extracts and the petrol ether fraction of Rhinocanthus nasutus leaf extract, from hatching to emergence significantly decreased the fecundity of the mosquitoes and the hatchability of their eggs. At the highest concentration of 50% EC50 of the extracts, the decrease in the fecundity over the control ranged between 62.4 and 87.4%. Sterility index of the mosquitoes reared in the media with the different extracts at this concentration ranged between 82.8 and 93.3%.  相似文献

The reproductive performance of 2484 gilts was recorded over a 12-month period at a large intensive piggery in southern Australia. Between 29 and 35 weeks of age, gilts were examined daily for response to the back-pressure test (BPT). Those subjectively assessed as showing a moderate or high response were taken to a boar for mating. Gilts that had showed a moderate response to the BPT on their first day of mating had lower average litter size than gilts showing a high BPT response (9.05 and 9.35 piglets, respectively; P < 0.05). A quantitative assessment of sexual receptivity was made while the gilt was with the boar. Gilts that were mated while showing low sexual receptivity on the first day of mating had poorer farrowing rate (78.1 vs. 83.1%, respectively; P < 0.05), as well as lower litter size (9.03 vs. 9.35 piglets, respectively; P < 0.05) than gilts that were mated when showing high sexual receptivity. A moderate BPT response was followed by either low sexual receptivity or failure to mate on 81.4% of occasions, compared with 12.8% for a high BPT response. Since 75% of gilts that showed a moderate BPT response on the first day of mating showed a high response on the following day, it was concluded that mating should only be attempted when gilts exhibit a high response to the BPT. The mean farrowing rate and litter size for gilts at their first farrowing was 82.4% and 9.31 piglets (8.62 alive and 0.69 dead), respectively.  相似文献

The approaches used by demographers and by epidemiologists for studying the fecundity of couples (i.e. their ability to conceive) have converged, whereas they were historically divergent. Demography traditionally focused on fertility - the circumstances in which livebirths occur - with the aim of predicting population changes, in particular. Demographers also rapidly became interested in fecundity, developing concepts such as fecundability and definitive sterility. The measurement of fecundability is based on determination of the time to pregnancy (TTP), the basic tool of the epidemiologist. However, while demographers were developing methods for estimating the distribution of fecundability among couples based on TTP, epidemiologists turned to methods for analysing the role of diverse factors potentially influencing fecundity at the individual level.  相似文献

The early-life developmental environment is instrumental in shaping our overall adult health and well-being. Early-life diet and endocrine exposure may independently, or in concert with our genetic constitution, induce a pathophysiological process that amplifies with age and leads to premature morbidity and mortality. Recently, this has become known as ‘programming’ but is akin to ‘maternal effects’ described for many years in the biological sciences and is defined as any influence that acts during critical developmental windows to induce long-term changes in the organisms'' phenotype. To date, such delayed maternal effects have largely been characterized in terms of susceptibility to cardiovascular or metabolic disease. Here, we review evidence from experimental animal species, non-human primates and man for an effect of the early-life nutritional environment on adult fecundity and fertility. In addition, using a database of pedigree sheep, we also specifically test the hypothesis that being born small for gestational age with or without post-natal growth acceleration directly programmes fertility. We conclude that there is a lack of compelling evidence to suggest pre-natal undernutrition may directly reduce adult fecundity and fertility, but may exert some effects secondarily via an increased incidence of ‘metabolic syndrome’. Possible effects of being born relatively large on subsequent fecundity and fertility warrant further investigation.  相似文献

Abstract:  The influence of different mating durations on fecundity and fertility has been studied in two aphidophagous ladybirds, Cheilomenes sexmaculata and Coelophora saucia . Pre-oviposition period decreased while fecundity and fertility increased with increase in mating duration in both the ladybird species. The increase in fecundity with longer mating durations is probably due to the female response because of cryptic female choice. Mating of 10-s duration resulted in oviposition but of unviable eggs probably because of lack of sperm transfer. A minimum duration of 1 min of mating was probably essential for fertilization of the eggs. Absence of spermatophore in the reproductive tract of females is indicative of direct sperm transfer in both the ladybird species. Trend of fertility (similar fertility at 1 and 5 min followed by increase at 60 min which was again similar to that at complete mating) indicates probable sperm transfer in spurts in C. sexmaculata while continuous transfer in C. saucia is indicated by continuous increase in fertility with increase in mating duration.  相似文献

Summary In this discussion an attempt is made to consider the extent to which rates of uptake by roots, as established in plant physiological research, can be used as supply rates towards the roots in the soil system. Multiplying measured total root length or surface in the field with rates of water influx gives amounts of water use that are usually somewhat higher than those actually occurring in the field. This may be due to the fact that the level of activity of older roots is unknown and cannot be taken into account. The high influx values of mineral nutrients obtained in physiological research can only be used if we can delineate the size and location of the actively absorbing root surface, define the actual soil-root contact and obtain more information on activity variations of roots during periods of stress.  相似文献

Rapid synchronization of hamster estrous cycles was achieved by administration of two subcutaneous injections of 7.5 μg of estradiol, given 24 hr apart, followed by one injection of 1 mg of progesterone/135 g body weight, given 20 hr after the last estradiol injection. Behavioral estrus occurred 4 hr after the injection of progesterone. Synchronized animals were mated during the second natural estrus following hormone treatment. Abnormal vaginal discharges were noted in most animals during the first few days after treatment, and, occasionally, a dissociation between behavioral and vaginal estrus was observed. However, by the second natural estrus after treatment, 69% of the colony demonstrated synchronized estrous cycles, both vaginally and behaviorally, and all abnormal discharges disappeared. The fertility rate was comparable to that in the colony from which the treated animals were taken, and the gestation period was normal, with an 8-hr range in onset of parturition. Offspring were normal in litter size, body weight, time of eye and vagina opening, sex ratio, and regularity of estrus. It was concluded that the technique is suitable for use by investigators interested in litter size and neonate development, in addition to those requiring time-mated or behaviorally synchronized animals. With the information gained from the experiment, a treatment schedule was devised which would produce 94% synchronization in a colony.  相似文献

The effect of twenty five amino acid analogues at various concentrations upon the adult olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae Gmelin (Diptera: Tephritidae), was tested. Insect survival was significantly shortened by the following amino acid analogues: (in parentheses are indicated the antagonized amino acids) D-cycloserine (alanine), L-glutamic acid--hydrazide (glutamine), DL-allyl-glycine (cysteine), L-canavanine (arginine), L-methionine-DL-sulfoximine (methionine) and 3,4-dehydro-DL-proline (proline). Fecundity was significantly reduced by the same analogues plus aminoethanesulfonic acid (glycine), taurine (alanine), L-norvaline (leucine), a-methyl-DL-serine (serine), DL-hydroxyglutamic acid (glutamic acid), (S)-2-(aminoethyl)-L-cysteine (lysine), a-methyl-DL-methionine (methionine) and a-methyl-DL-histidine (histidine). All the above amino acid analogues also depressed egg-hatching with the exception of taurine, DL-hydroxyglutamic acid, DL-allyl glycine, a-methyl-DL-methionine and a-methyl-DL-histidine. Finally, y-glutamyl-p-nitroanilide (glutamic acid), crotyl-glycine (methionine), DL-7-azatryptophan and 5-methyl-DL-tryptophan (tryptophan), DL-1,2,4 triazole-3-alanine (histidine) and DL-pipecolic acid (proline) did not affect any of the parameters tested.  相似文献

The occurrence of female remating has been widely reported in insects and the frequency at which it occurs and the factors driving females’ remating behavior have been shown to be both species specific and variable within species. Herein, we studied the remating behavior of females from a well established laboratory colony and a wild population of the South American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), under laboratory conditions. Latency to first mating (number of days from the onset of the experiment until the first copula) was shorter for remating females than for females that did not remate. Two‐day fecundity was higher for females that did remate than for monogamous females. Egg hatch was sustained after remating and was not affected by the number of times the female mated. However, when females willing to remate were prevented from doing so, percent egg hatch showed a significant drop. These results and the fact that remating occurred more often in more fecund females than in less fecund ones suggest that remating may be a response to sperm depletion. Remating frequency was similar in laboratory and wild flies, but 2‐day fecundity was higher for laboratory than for wild females of similar mating status. Also, the length of the refractory period (time between first and second copulation) was longer for wild than for laboratory females. Differences between strains could be the result of artificial selection. Results are discussed from a theoretical and applied perspective in the context of direct benefits to females.  相似文献

One to three embryos were transferred to three groups each of 12 Kenya Merino ewes to establish if uterine capacity is a limiting factor to reproductive performance in this breed of sheep, in a tropical environment. A fourth group of 12 ewes received three embryos following superovulation. Multiple transfers increased the number of lambs born per pregnant ewe. However, although superovulation significantly (P<0.01) increased endogenous progesterone levels in Group 4 recipient ewes, it did not improve either their conception or lambing rates. Peri- and post-natal losses increased with the number of embryos trnasferred and with the litter size. Consequently, the same number of lambs were weaned per recipient ewe in all four groups. It is concluded that although the uterine capacity of the Kenyan Merino ewes is higher than their natural ovulation rates require, increasing the litter size will not necessarily increase the number of lambs weaned.  相似文献

The egg production by fish of various lengths is plotted and a curvilinear regression for standard and total length fitted. The number of eggs produced is approximately equal to the square of the total length in centimetres of the parent fish. The brood numbers of 460 females are plotted against length, and linear regressions for mean brood number and mean fry number fitted. The relationship between the expressions for numbers of fry brooded and egg production gives an estimate of brooding efficiency that decreases with increasing parent length. Individual female fish show signs of reripening and the timing of this process is estimated from gonad state and from the length of fry brooded in the mouth. The relationship between fecundity (egg production) and fertility (fry brooded) is considered and the effect of maturation size, growth rate and spawning frequency assessed.  相似文献

Understanding the pattern of ovarian follicle development is seen as an important step leading to the development of techniques that maximise fertility in sheep. Repeated observations of the growth of individual follicles have led to the understanding that follicles develop in a wave-like pattern during the oestrous cycle, with two to four waves per cycle being the most common. The ease with which follicle waves are described seems to depend on the their frequency and the number of follicles per wave. There is evidence for the largest follicle(s) of a follicle wave inhibiting the development of other follicles; however, in some cases this is not apparent as other follicle waves emerge when a previous large, healthy follicle is still present. Follicle development can be manipulated using exogenous gonadotrophins or progestagens and these have been shown to alter the number or age profile of developing follicles. The ovulation of aged follicles in cattle clearly has a detrimental effect on fertility, but this relationship is less clear and seems to be less critical in sheep. Recent findings at the molecular level show that the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) and their receptors are critically involved in the control of ovulation rate, but fully understanding their mechanism remains to be described. This highlights the potential for the integration of molecular and physiological findings to better develop methods to manipulate follicle development and reproduction in sheep.  相似文献
