The population dynamics of D. galeata was studied during the period May–July of 5 successive years in Bautzen Reservoir (Germany). Sampling intervals of 3–4 days and knowledge of the egg–age distribution made it possible to calculate recruitment of the population for each sampling interval. In every year, high Daphnia densities and high Secchi depth readings (clear-water stage) were recorded in spring. In two of the 5 years, Daphnia abundance remained on a high level throughout summer, whereas in the remaining 3 years a midsummer decline of Daphnia was observed. Birth rates declined while the abundance increased in spring in every year but the timing of this decline in relation to abundance and the onset of the clear-water stage revealed no obvious pattern, distinguishing between years with or without a midsummer decline. However, cumulative recruitment did reveal a clear pattern: in years without a midsummer decline, cumulative recruitment increased slowly, but continually, starting from a low level in early May. By contrast, in years with a midsummer decline, recruitment increased strongly during one week in May, starting from a relatively high density level (>30 ind. l–1). This quick increase was followed by extended periods with low recruitment. Consequently, in these years the population was dominated by a strong peak-cohort of about the same age during the clear-water stage. If all members of this cohort, while approaching their maximum life-span, die off during a short time interval, this may have a pronounced effect on the initiation of a midsummer decline. From an extensive literature search, evidence is provided that the findings of this study represent a demographic mechanism which is of general importance for the initiation of a midsummer decline in temperate waters.  相似文献

Increasingly large presence‐only survey datasets are becoming available for use in conservation assessments. Potentially, these records could be used to determine spatial patterns of plant species rarity and endemism. We test the integration of a large South Korean species record database with Rabinowitz rarity classes. Rabinowitz proposed seven classes of species rarity using three variables: geographic range, habitat specificity, and local population size. We estimated the range size and local abundance of 2,215 plant species from species occurrence records and habitat specificity as the number of landcover types each species’ records were found in. We classified each species into a rarity class or as common, compared species composition by class to national lists, and mapped the spatial pattern of species richness for each rarity class. Species were classed to narrow or wide geographic ranges using 315 km, the average from a range size index of all species (Dmax), based on maximum distance between observations. There were four classes each within the narrow and wide range groups, sorted using cutoffs of local abundance and habitat specificity. Nationally listed endangered species only appeared in the narrow‐range classes, while nationally listed endemic species appeared in almost all classes. Species richness in most rarity classes was high in northeastern South Korea especially for species with narrow ranges. Policy implications. Large presence‐only surveys may be able to estimate some classes of rarity better than others, but modification to include estimates of local abundance and habitat types, could greatly increase their utility. Application of the Rabinowitz rarity framework to such surveys can extend their utility beyond species distribution models and can identify areas that need further surveys and for conservation priority. Future studies should be aware of the subjectivity of the rarity classification and that regional scale implementations of the framework may differ.  相似文献

A decline in abundance towards a species' range boundary is often interpreted as evidence of a decline in individual success, and is usually assumed to reflect a decline in suitable environmental conditions. Gradual declines towards high latitude range boundaries are frequently attributed to limitations on organismal tolerance of cold temperature. Rarely have these two assumptions been empirically tested. The intertidal gastropod Collisella scabra declines monotonically in abundance from 435 to <1 m?2 over the northern 300 km of its geographic distribution. I examined temperature, adult performance (survival, growth, reproduction), and recruitment at five locations in this region of decline. Mortality ranged from 4.9 to 11.2% per month, but was highest at the lowest latitude study site. Growth rates ranged from 0 to 5.2 mm yr?1, but were generally lower at lower latitude sites. Gonad development was high in the three populations examined, but the possibility of infrequent spawning at high latitude sites could not be excluded. Finally, a comparison of performance differences among populations with temperature revealed clear effects of temperature on both growth and mortality; however, the patterns were not consistent with a hypothesis of cold stress at the range boundary. Overall there was little evidence for either reduced performance or increasing cold stress in low density high latitude populations. Over the same 300 km, recruitment declined monotonically from a mean of six recruits per 625 cm2 to less than one; suggesting that limitations on recruitment, rather that adult performance, are responsible for low abundance in marginal populations. Several hypotheses for the decline in recruitment are discussed in the paper and the most likely explanation appears to be an increase in the distance between populations at the range margin, reducing the chances that dispersing larvae find suitable habitat for settlement.  相似文献

以国家Ⅱ级保护极小种群野生植物——对开蕨(Phyllitis scolopendrium)为研究对象,分析了在海拔729、1008m群落内,其种群大小、分布频度和密度,个体形态特征指标及其在种群内、种群间差异,苗高分布规律、相对苗高组替代年龄级结构,分布格局和群落各层次的物种多样性,群落的相似性。结果表明:对开蕨在自然分布区内为偶见种,呈斑块状分布。在400m~2内,海拔1008m处(01群落)种群密度为31株,样地分布频度为43.75%,最大密度15株/25m~2;海拔729m处(02群落)种群密度为91株,样地分布频度为93.75%,最大密度30株/25m~2。通过对其自然苗高,叶片数量,有孢子囊叶片数量,最大叶片长、宽值,最小叶片长、宽值,冠径,叶片厚度7个形态指标的分析显示,种群内变异较大,随着植株高度(年龄)的增加,其变异系数均随之减小而趋于稳定;种群间在自然苗高,最大叶片长度和宽度,成熟孢子叶片数量,冠径,叶片厚度上达到极显著差异(P0.01)。其苗高分布呈现双峰型,01种群波谷出现在15.1—20.0cm处;02种群波谷出现在10.1—15.0cm处,两群落均显示有一次较大的更新过程,同时01种群在40.1—45.0cm出现间断。年龄级分析得出,01种群划分为5个龄级,近于正态分布;02种群划分为4个龄级,为倒J型分布;两种群分别处于中龄期和幼龄期,没有出现衰退型年龄结构。格局分析得出,对开蕨种群均为聚集分布。两群落的乔木、灌木、草本层的Shannon-Wiener指数、Pielou均匀度指数、Marglef丰富度指数、生态优势度和种间相遇机率较低(与地带顶级植被相比)而且分布不均;对开蕨在两群落的草本层中重要值较低,仅为伴生种。两群落相似性分析显示,乔木、灌木、草本层的相似度指数分别为66.67%、69.23%和38.46%,草本层差异较大。  相似文献

树栖腹足类动物是红树林底栖动物的重要组成部分,其组成和分布受到红树植被的影响。因此,在红树林生态修复中,腹足类动物的恢复依赖于植被的发育。滨螺科(Littorinidae)锥滨螺属(Mainwaringia)动物是亚洲红树林的广布种,但针对其在红树林中的分布及种群特征的研究较少,对红树林植被恢复过程中锥滨螺属动物的恢复动态更是鲜有研究。调查了厦门下潭尾湿地秋茄(Kandelia obovata)红树林恢复初期,新记录种莱氏锥滨螺(Mainwaringia leithii)种群恢复的时间动态,并分析其与植被参数的关系。研究发现,红树林恢复初期,秋茄植被生长迅速,株高、冠幅、基径和覆盖度分别由0.5年生幼林的41.3 cm、25.0 cm、1.04 cm和25%增长为8年生样地的179.2 cm、76.7 cm、5.96 cm和95%。在秋茄胚轴种植6个月左右开始记录到莱氏锥滨螺的个体,其密度和生物量在1.5 a后达到最大(分别为136个/m2和1.86 g/m2),而后逐渐降低,种植3 a后秋茄林内莱氏锥滨螺仅零星分布。除8年生的样地,莱氏锥滨...  相似文献

There is increasing evidence that some natural disturbances are increasing in frequency and intensity with global change, but the effects of these changes on plant populations is poorly understood. It is estimated that for every 1°C increase in the summer mean minimum temperature, there is a 40% increase in hail damage. Severe hailstorms can cause large impacts on biological communities. In 2008, a strong hailstorm hit the speciose and endemic rupestrian vegetation in Serra do Cipó, Brazil. This event prompted us to record its effects on the narrowly distributed and threatened species Coccoloba cereifera (Polygonaceae). About 33 to 60% of the leaves on the 246 individuals surveyed were lost. The disturbance also influenced some of the physiological traits of C. cereifera, increasing the concentration of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoid) and polyphenols in the leaves. The most pronounced increase of chlorophyll was in young leaves (ca. 60%). Carotenoid content increased by ca. 50% in all leaf ages, while polyphenols increased tenfold. Contrarily, the endophyte richness decreased drastically after the event (from 104 to 33 species), only 12% of similar species remain. The hail storm strongly influenced all variables evaluated in this study, i.e., structure, physiology, and associated fungi. These results show that hailstorm had a dramatic and immediate impact on C. cereifera and may also severely affect other endemic or threatened plant species. Therefore, it is imperative that we broaden our knowledge on global climate change impacts for the conservation of native species.  相似文献

Summary Regular monitoring of populations of the subtidal limpet Patelloida mufria (Hedley), which were at naturally large densities (>1000/m2), showed that at the times when there were peaks in juvenile recruitment, the mortality of adults increased greatly. This produced a cyclical pattern in the density of adults, suggesting the juveniles play a partial regulatory role. Experimental manipulations were done to test the influence of overall density and the density of juveniles on the growth and survival of adults. These indicated that an increase in overall density reduced the rate of growth of individuals and increased the rate of adult mortality during the peaks in juvenile recruitment. Similarly, removing these juveniles as they recruited averted this decline in adult abundance. The proposed mechanism to explain these results is that the juveniles have a competitive advantage over adults as they are much smaller and therefore require less energy to survive. It is hypothesisied, therefore, that there will be a threshold of adult size below which the recruits will lose their competitive advantage. Furthermore, if their density became too great, the cover of crustose algae (which is the main food of this species) would be removed resulting in a rapid decline in the numbers of P. mufria. Such an occurrence could be the ultimate regulatory agent for this species.  相似文献

We examined the changes in spatial pattern that accompanied the population decline of the garden tiger moth, Arctia caja (L.) in Britain between 1968 and 1999 using Spatial Analysis by Distance Indices (SADIE) techniques. A principal co-ordinate analysis of all pair-wise spatial associations between years indicated three groupings of years: 1969–1978,1979–1990,1991–1999, which revealed three phases during the population decline: an early period with highly structured spatial pattern; a middle period with nearly random distribution overall; and a recent period with highly structured spatial pattern but small abundance overall. The change in spatial structure in the early 1980’s accompanied rapid changes in abundance but preceded a sharp decline in occupancy and confirms that the sharp decline in abundance included decreases from widespread high-density sites. Perhaps unusually, A. caja varied from spatially aggregated to randomly distributed and back to spatially aggregated, all while its abundance declined sharply. Present distribution pattern may reflect past abundance changes poorly in this species. Areas showing the greatest variation in abundance displayed the greatest range in spatial structure, but also the greatest stability of spatial pattern, indicating changes between extremes of spatial pattern occurred slowly. SADIE techniques are a powerful method to quantify temporal changes in spatial pattern and relate them to temporal changes in abundance.  相似文献

A two-phase grassland mosaic was described using species association measures and pattern analysis techniques on local frequency data from six transects of contiguous quadrats. One phase consisted of almost mono-specific patches of Setaria incrassata, which was negatively or not associated with ten common species. The other phase was dominated by Themeda triandra which was positively associated with several species. PQV analyses revealed similar, significant, anisotropic scales of contagion of Setaria and Themeda, with phases alternating over 9 m up-slope and 4 m along the contour. Setaria was associated with a tree canopy and deeper soils of higher organic carbon content than Themeda, which was negatively associated with tree canopies. Excavation of Setaria rhizomes indicated mean densities of 20.5 putative genets/m2 and 3.6 ramets per genet. Dense clonal growth, seedling recruitment and a competitive exclusion mechanism may contribute to patch maintenance.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between variation in age and shoot characteristics of the host plant Salix exigua Nuttall (coyote or sandbar willow) and the attack and survival of Euura sp. (an unnamed leaf-midrib galling sawfly). Variation in shoot characteristics resulted from reduced growth as willow ramets aged. Mean shoot length per ramet and mean longest leaf length per shoot decreased by 95% and 50% respectively between 1- and 9-year-old willow ramets. All measured shoot characteristics-shoot length, longest leaf length, number of leaves per shoot, and mean internode length-were significantly negatively correlated with ramet age (r 2 ranged from –0.23 to –0.41). Correlations between shoot characteristics were highly positive, indicating that plants also grew in a strongly integrated fashion (r 2 ranged from 0.54 to 0.85). Four hypotheses were examined to explain sawfly attack patterns. The host-plant hypothesis was supported in explaining enhanced larval sawfly survival through reduced plant resistance. As willow ramets aged, the probability of Euura sp. attack decreased over 10-fold, from 0.315 on 1-year-old ramets to 0.024 on 2- to 9-year-old ramets. As shoot length increased, the probability of sawfly attack increased over 100-fold, from 0.007 on shoots <100 mm, to 0.800 on shoots in the 1001–1100 mm shoot length class. These attack patterns occurred even though 1-year-old ramets and shoots >500 mm each represented less than 2% of the total shoots available for oviposition. Host plant induced mortality of the egg/early instar stage decreased by 50% on longer leaves and was the most important factor determining survival differences between vigorous and non-vigorous hosts. Sawfly attack was not determined by the resource distribution hypothesis. Although shoots <200 mm contained 82% of the total leaves available, they contained only 43% of the galls initiated. The attack pattern also was not explained by the gall volume hypothesis. Although gall volume increased on longer shoots, there was no significant variation in mid or late instar mortality over shoot length, as would be expected if food resources within smaller galls were limited. The natural enemy attack hypothesis could not explain the pattern of oviposition since predation was greater on longer shoots and leaves. In addition, larval survival was related to oviposition behavior. Due to a 69% reduction in late instar death and an 83% reduction in parasitism, survival of progeny in galls initiated close to the petiole base was 2.8 times greater than in galls initiated near the leaf tip. A 75% reduction in gall volume over this range of gall positions may account for the observed increases in late instar mortality and parasitism.  相似文献

Clonal plants have the ability to spread and survive over long periods of time by vegetative growth. For endangered species, the occurrence of clonality can have significant impacts on levels of genetic diversity, population structure, recruitment, and the implementation of appropriate conservation strategies. Here we␣examine clone structure in three populations of Ambrosia pumila (Nutt.) Gray (Asteraceae), a federally endangered clonal species from southern California. Ambrosia pumila is a perennial herbaceous species spreading from a rhizome, and is frequently found in dense patches of several hundred stems in a few square meters. The primary habitat for this species is upper terraces of rivers and drainages in areas that have been heavily impacted by anthropogenic disturbances and changing flood regimes. RAPD markers were employed to document the number and distribution of clones within multiple 0.25 m2 plots from each of three populations. Thirty-one multi-locus genotypes were identified from the 201 stems sampled. The spatial distribution of clones was limited with no genotypes shared between plots or populations. Mean clone size was estimated at 9.10 ramets per genet. Genets in most plots were intermingled, conforming to a guerrilla growth form. The maximum genet spread was 0.59 m suggesting that genets can be larger than the sampled 0.25 m2 plots. Spatial autocorrelation analysis found a lack of spatial genetic structure at short distances and significant structure at large distances within populations. Due to the occurrence of multiple genets within each population, the limited spread of genets, and a localized genetic structure, conservation activities should focus on the maintenance of multiple populations throughout the species range.  相似文献

The abundant centre hypothesis (ACH) assumes that population abundance, population size, density and per‐capita reproductive output should peak at the centre of a species' geographic range and decline towards the periphery. Increased isolation among and decreased reproductive output within edge populations should reduce within‐population genetic diversity and increase genetic differentiation among edge relative to central populations. The ACH also predicts asymmetrical gene flow, with net movement of migrants from the centre to edges. We evaluated these ecological assumptions and population‐genetic predictions in the endemic flowering plant Leavenworthia stylosa. Although populations were more spatially isolated near range edges, the geographic centre was surrounded by and not coincident with areas of peak population abundance, and plant density increased towards range edges. Per‐capita seed number was not associated with distance to the range centre, but seed number/m2 increased near range edges. In support of ACH predictions, allelic diversity at 12 microsatellite loci declined with distance from the range centre, and pairwise FST values were higher between edge populations than between central populations. Coalescent analyses confirmed that gene flow was most infrequent between edge populations, but there was not an asymmetric pattern of gene flow predicted by the ACH. This study shows that among‐population demographic variability largely did not support the ACH, while patterns of genetic diversity, differentiation and gene flow were generally consistent with its predictions. Such mixed support has frequently been observed in tests of the ACH and raises concerns regarding the generality of this hypothesis for species range limits.  相似文献

Question: Spatial prediction of plant populations is essential for conservation management. This is especially true for rare and/or threatened endemic species, for which knowledge of determinants of distribution is necessary to mitigate threats and counteract decline. We therefore ask if the distribution of an endemic species can be accurately predicted by georeferenced environmental variables or, if anthropogenic variables also need to be taken into account. Location: Alps, Hautes‐Alpes, France. Methods: Potential distribution area and abundance of Eryngium spinalba were predicted with logistic regression and ordinal logistic regression, respectively, in a 57‐km2 watershed. Results: Aspect, global solar radiation in March, elevation and grazing pressure were the main predictors of the probability of occurrence of Eryngium spinalba. Taking into account the persistence of agro‐pastoral activities by diachronic analysis (Napoleonic cadastral map and orthorectified photographs) improved predictions from the model and the level of spatial concordance with independent surveys. Conclusions: Niche modelling improved our understanding of the distribution of this threatened species which, in the context of land abandonment, is diminishing as a result of the decline of its favoured habitats. The key role of pastoral activities and historic continuity for its distribution and persistence was clearly demonstrated.  相似文献

Beach communities of eastern North America are commonly dominated by the native perennial grass Ammophila breviligulata. It typically co-occurs with a variety of annual grasses and herbs in the pioneer zone. To determine the potential significance of this vigorous clonal species to the annual community, density, spatial distribution, seed production and potential seed rain were quantified for three focus species (Triplasis purpurea, Cenchrus tribuloides, and Heterotheca subaxillaris) in a 45×40 m section of coastal beach on Staten Island, New York, USA. During autumn 2000, five 40 m transects (10 m apart) were established perpendicular to shore; ramet density for Ammophila, and densities and per capita seed production for the three species, were estimated in 150 contiguous quadrats (35 cm × 30 cm) per transect. Both Triplasis and Cenchrus were more likely to occur in quadrats without Ammophila. Per capita seed production of Cenchrus and Heterotheca showed a curvilinear decrease with increasing numbers of Ammophila ramets. Mean seed rain per m2 was significantly reduced in the presence of Ammophila for all three focus annuals. In this beach community, Ammophila acts as an ecosystem engineer, but has a mostly negative influence on the distribution, density, and reproduction of the co-occurring annuals. Results suggest that continual, deliberate planting of A. breviligulata could be detrimental to the abundance and diversity of native annual herbs on the eastern coasts of North America.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in abundance and distribution pattern of soil micro-arthropods were studied in connection with a few environmental factors in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) plantation. The soil arthropods were sampled from three different depths at intervals of two months for two years. Of the collected animals (total 51000–155000 m−2), Collembola (20000–76000 m−2), oribatid mites (19000–55000 m−2) and carnivorous mites (6200–21000 m−2) were the numerically dominant animal groups. Low seasonal variations in abundance indicated their seasonal stability in population levels. The trends in seasonal fluctuation were similar among these groups and between the two years, showing bimodal pattern with little peaks in early summer and winter. The pattern of seasonal fluctuation in abundance of carnivorous mites (P d) was significantly synchronized with that in the total abundance of Collembola and oribatid mites (P τ). Thus, the number-ratios (P d/P τ) were fairly constant, ranging from 0.10 to 0.25. Seasonal changes in vertical distribution of the three animal groups showed a similar pattern for both years. The downward migrations were shown to be more affected by low temperatures in winter accompanied by snow coverage rather than by the desiccation of the surface soil in summer. All the three groups demonstrated as a whole slightly aggregated patterns of horizontal distribution throughout the two years. Temporal increases in the patchiness indices were observed from summer to autumn when the moisture content of the surface soil was low.  相似文献

Mammals are hypothesized to either promote plant diversity by preventing competitive exclusion or limit diversity by reducing the abundance of sensitive plant species through their activities as browsers or disturbance agents. Previous studies of herbivore impacts in plant communities have focused on tree species and ignored the herbaceous community. In an experiment in mature-phase, tropical moist forest sites in central Panamá, we studied the impact of excluding ground-dwelling mammals on the richness and abundance of herbs in 16, 30×45-m plots. Within each plot, we censused the herbaceous community in 28, 2×2-m subplots (1,792 m2 total area sampled). We identified over 54 species of herbs averaging 1.21 ramets m−2 and covering approximately 4.25% of the forest floor. Excluding mammals for 5 years had no impact on overall species richness. Within exclosures, however, there was a significant two-fold increase in the density of rare species. Overall herbaceous density and percent cover did not differ between exclosures and adjacent control plots, although cover did increase over time. Mammalian exclusion significantly increased the total cover of three-dominant herb species, Pharus latifolius, Calathea inocephala, and Adiantum lucidum, but did not affect their density. This study represents one of the most extensive herbaceous community censuses conducted in tropical forests and is among a few that quantify herbaceous distribution and abundance in terms of both density and cover. Additionally, this work represents the first community level test of mammalian impacts on the herbaceous community in a tropical forest to date. Our results suggest that ground dwelling mammals do not play a key role in altering the relative abundance patterns of tropical herbs in the short term. Furthermore, our results contrast sharply with prior studies on similar temporal and spatial scales that demonstrate mammals strongly alter tree seedling composition and reduce seedling density. Thus, we question the pervasiveness of top–down control on tropical plant communities and the paradigm that defaunation will inexorably lead to widespread, catastrophic shifts in plant communities.  相似文献

Coccoloba cereifera (Polygonaceae) is an extremely rare endemic shrub found exclusively in the rupestrian fields of Serra do Cipó, southeastern, Brazil. We assessed the genetic diversity and structure across the single occurrence area of C. cereifera. The genetic variation at 13 microsatellite loci was estimated from 139 individuals sampled in nine patches. The number of alleles per locus varied from two to ten; the expected and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.324 to 0.566 and 0.337 to 0.529, respectively. Microsatellites detected low but statistically significant levels of differentiation among patches (F ST = 0.123, R ST = 0.105), whereas Mantel test results showed a weak but significant pattern of isolation by distance (r 2 = 0.31, P < 0.002). Bayesian clustering indicated two subdivisions connected via admixture. Habitat heterogeneity across the drainage basin of the Rio Indequicé is likely limiting gene flow within patches of the geographically restricted population. While there is currently no evidence for a direct genetic risk to species survival, the apparent natural segregation occurring within the species could be exacerbated by future land use changes and the influx of alien species which could lead to demographic reductions in population size leading to a reduction in genetic diversity and an increase in population subdivision. We suggest that maintaining the integrity of the habitat within the small range of the species and continued monitoring of the effects of alien species would be the wisest use of management resources.  相似文献

为了探究贵州习水国家级自然保护区特有植物习水杜鹃(Rhododendron xishuiense)种群现状,揭示该种群动态及濒危原因,加强对该种群的保护,在该保护区设置了13条样线,调查习水杜鹃在保护区的分布情况。对现存习水杜鹃分布地开展样地调查,采用4个多样性指数和Raunkiear生活型系统分析习水杜鹃分布群落的结构,通过空间代替时间得到种群年龄结构,据此编制静态生命表,并绘制存活曲线及4个生存函数曲线分析习水杜鹃种群的动态特征。结果表明,共有维管植物27科42属65种,其中种子植物24科39属62种,蕨类植物3科3属3种。以高位芽的物种数最多,有56种,占物种总数的86.15%,其次是地上芽植物、地面芽植物、地下芽植物。群落的多样性指数均表现为乔木层>灌木层>草本层,乔木层占有绝对的优势地位。种群年龄结构呈“金字塔”型,种群幼苗个体相对于整个种群数量较多;种群存活曲线属于DeeveyⅡ型,个体数量随着年龄的增加而不断减少;种群生存率持续下降,尤以中后期减少速度较快,种群衰退。习水杜鹃种群分布范围狭窄,分布群落物种多样性高,幼苗相对较多表现为增长型,但种群总量极少,且遭...  相似文献

Although clonal growth is a dominant mode of plant growth in wetlands, the importance of clonal integration, resource sharing among ramets, to individual ramet generations (mother and daughter) and entire clones of coexisting species has not been well investigated. This study evaluated the significance of clonal integration in four sedge species of varying ramet aggregations, from clump-forming species (Clumpers –Carex sterilis, Eleocharis rostellata), with tightly aggregated ramets (rhizomes<1cm), to runner species (Runners –Schoenoplectus acutus, Cladium mariscoides), with loosely aggregated ramets. We manipulated clonal integration by either severing connections between target mother and daughter ramets or leaving connections intact, and then planted them in an intact neighborhood of a fen in Michigan, USA. We measured growth parameters of original and newly produced ramets over two growing seasons and conducted a final biomass harvest, to address four hypotheses. First, we expected integrated clones to accumulate more biomass than severed clones. However, final clone-level biomass and ramet production were the same for both treatments in all species although severing initially stimulated ramet production by Schoenoplectus and produced a more compact ramet aggregation in Cladium. Second, we hypothesized that mother ramets would experience a cost of integration, through reduced ramet or biomass production, while daughters would experience a benefit, through increased resource availability from mothers. Mother ramets of Cladium suffered a cost from integration, while Schoenoplectus mothers suffered a slight cost and Carex daughters saw a slight benefit. Finally, we hypothesized that integration would be more active in runner species than in clumper species. Indeed, we documented more active integration in runners than clumpers, but none of the study species were dependent upon integration for growth or survival once daughter ramets were established with their own roots and shoots. This study demonstrates that integration between established ramets may not be the most important advantage to clonal growth in this wetland field site. The loss of integration elicited varied responses among coexisting species in their natural habitat, somewhat but not completely related to their growth form, suggesting that a combination of plant life history traits contributes to the dependence upon clonal integration among established ramets of clonal species.  相似文献
