Abstract:  Substrate distribution was studied in three adult colonies of the leaf-cutting ant Atta bisphaerica Forel, 1908 using dye. Some supply holes were mapped using baits made from small plastic straws impregnated with citric pulp. Two holes, equidistant from one another, were then selected in each nest. The colonies were excavated completely 24 h after bait placement. During excavation, fungus chambers were checked for dye. We observed that the dyed baits were distributed in all sectors and at all depths regardless of where the baits had been placed. This supported the hypothesis that toxic baits placed in a single supply hole are uniformly distributed throughout the colony.  相似文献

Pheidole oxyops builds subterranean nests, with an external architecture that is distinctive and easily recognizable by its wide and specific entrance hole, measuring up to 12.2 cm in diameter, denoting a pitfall-trap. In order to study the nests' internal architecture, seven nests were excavated; four were identified with neutral talc, while the others were cast in cement and then excavated. Measurements were made in order to gain a better understand- ing of their structures, and a photographic documentation was obtained as well. The excavations revealed that the nests are perpendicular relative to the ground, beginning with a cylindrical channel with a mean length of 13.5 cm, containing irregular formations, and whose diameter becomes progressively narrower until the first chamber is formed. As the channel continues, dish-like chambers appear, interconnected by channels that become progressively narrower and longer, while the chambers are arranged at greater distances from each other as nest depth increases. Both channels and chambers are located on the vertical projection of the entrance hole. Nests may reach a depth of up to 5.09 m, with a number of chambers ranging between 4 and 14.  相似文献

Abstract The nests of the mangrove ant Polyrhachis sokolova are found in soil in intertidal mangrove communities, and are thus inundated at high tides for several hours. Some of the nest galleries are flooded, but others retain air pockets, to which the ants retreat. During and following inundation, we measured carbon dioxide concentrations in air samples collected from different levels in the nests and from artificial 'control' holes in the mud. To account for the relative contribution of different sources of carbon dioxide, we also measured the carbon dioxide production by individual ants (including larvae and pupae) and small samples of mud collected near the ant nests. Nest carbon dioxide concentrations were high (2.5−11%) during and immediately following inundation, but the concentrations in the upper regions of the nest fell as soil water levels receded. However, at depths>10 cm below the level soil surface, the carbon dioxide concentrations remained relatively high and stable (at approximately 2%) over the 11 days between one high tide and the next. The contribution of the mud (and associated microorganisms) to the carbon dioxide concentration in the nests was substantial, and the contribution of the respiration of the ants was approximately 10−15% of the total. The carbon dioxide concentrations in the nests of this species during high tides are among the highest recorded for insect nests, suggesting that these ants may have unusual physiological attributes to match the behavioural and ecological challenges associated with living in the intertidal zone.  相似文献

A colony of the leaf-cutting Attine (Atta cephalotes isthmicola) ants was cultured and observed in the laboratory. During the 114 month life of the colony, a maximum garden volume of 54 L. was attained. The colony used a total of 139,902 g of substrate at a maximum rate of 2,660 g per month and occupied one hundred forty-four 1.25 L. chambers. Observations on the colony ranged from behavior of the castes to biochemistry and the absence of cholesterol. The dramatic display quality of Attine colonies for zoological exhibit is discussed.  相似文献

Material brought to midden piles of leaf-cutting ants is considered to be hazardous. It is therefore expected that midden workers should not re-enter the colony, to reduce pathogen transmission. Here, we examined whether the midden workers of Atta sexdens rubropilosa remain confined to the waste compartment and, if not, whether they could perform many different behaviors in the absence of specialized nestmates. Eleven subcolonies received either midden workers or non-midden workers in addition to pupae and 50 mL of fungus garden. Survival, fungal and brood care, foraging and waste manipulation were observed daily until subcolonies death. Subcolonies maintained by midden workers died earlier: average survival times were 13.92 and 22.66 days for midden and non-midden workers, respectively. Midden workers cared for the brood and foraged as non-midden workers did but they were not as efficient in caring for the garden. Activities related to waste manipulation were more frequently performed by midden workers. These results show that midden workers are not a behaviorally rigid caste and retain many labor capabilities being able to leave the waste compartment and perform internal activities in the absence of specialized internal workers.  相似文献

Abstract In this paper, we analyze and compare nest composition and architecture as well as worker relatedness in three related species of slave-making ants: Rossomyrmex anatolicus, R. minuchae, and R. quandratinodum. Colony structure within nests is an important trait in ants, especially in the case of mixed societies, when host and parasite coexist in the same nest. Data for their respective free-living hosts, Proformica korbi, P. longiseta and P. sp., are also provided. For our study, we integrated a meticulous excavation procedure with a genetic method. We conclude that the average number of parasites, as well as of slaves, is species-specific, whereas nest depth depends on the nest architecture of the host. The genus Rossomyrmex seems to be monogynous and monandrous, whereas Proformica shows differences in the number of queens and mating frequency. R. quandratinodum shows different traits in nest composition (host/parasite ratio: P/R) and architecture. The difference in traits may account for some differences in parasitism: raid process or avoidance of parasitism.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of insects is essential to perform control strategies, to improve sample techniques and to estimate economic losses. We aimed to determine the spatial distribution of nests of Acromyrmex crassispinus (Forel) in Pinus taeda plantations. The experiments were carried out in P. taeda plantations with different ages (treatments: recently-planted, three and six-year old plants). The study took place in Rio Negrinho and in Três Barras, SC. Three plots of one hectare were delimited in each treatment, and plots were divided in 64 sample units. The analysis of the dispersion index [variance/mean relationship (I), index of Morisita (Iδ) and k exponent of negative binomial distribution] showed that the majority of the samplings presented random distribution. Among the three distributions of probabilities studied: Poisson, positive binomial and negative binomial, the Poisson distribution was the best model to fit the spatial distribution of A. crassispinus nests in all samplings. The result was a random distribution in the plantings of different ages.  相似文献

Workers of the related ants Tetramorium impurum and T. caespitum mark the vicinity of their nest entrances in a species-specific manner, as seen by similarities between the behavior of nestmates and that of alien conspecifics (e.g., concerning aggregation, locomotion, orientation, tendency to move, and agonistic behavior). Additionally, they mark the inside of their nest entrances in a colony-specific manner, as seen by the following differences in behavior. Nestmates aggregate on these areas, walk rather slowly, but freely and essentially in the middle of the areas, come toward and very near such areas, are not inclined to escape, and are ready to attack possible intruders. Alien conspecifics do not aggregate, walk quickly, and are reluctant to stay on the areas, come neither toward nor very near the areas, are inclined to escape, and often open their mandibles, mainly when in front of a resident. The marking of the nest entrances is performed by T. impurum in 30 min and by T. caespitum in 15 min. If not reinforced, the marking by both species vanishes in 60 and 50 min, respectively. Extracts of hindlegs, metathorax, or metapleural glands produce in unmarked areas the ethological effect of marked entrances. It may be hypothesized that the marking factor is produced by the workers' metapleural glands and deposited onto the ground, via the hindlegs of ants leaving the nest. A worker's head has a species- but not a colony-specific ethological effect. An isolated alien conspecific's head is never attacked, whereas a thorax with abdomen is. This explains why, by opening its mandibles (and then presumably emitting a mandibular gland pheromone), a conspecific ant momentarily inhibits the attack of a nonnestmate. According to Hölldobler and Wilson (1990), the marking of the inside of T. impurum and T. caespitum nest entrances is a territorial and nest-entrance marking, whereas the marking of the close vicinity of the entrances is a home-range marking, as is the marking of the foraging area. These markings are in accordance with the fact that T. impurum foragers deposit their trail pheromone as far as the opening of the nest entrance.  相似文献

The effect of larval cuticle extract (larval pheromone) and venom gland extract (trail pheromone) on transport of formulated baits by Atta sexdens rubropilosa (Forel) was studied in the field and under laboratory conditions. In the laboratory, we observed the transport to the nest of baits impregnated with 10???L of venom gland extract (0.01 gland/bait) or 10???L of larval cuticle extract (0.05 larva/bait). The most transported impregnated bait was then tested in the field placing rubber septa impregnated with 100?mL of extract or with 100?mL of solvent with the baits at 0.2, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0?m away from the trail and from the nest entrance. Baits impregnated with venom gland extract were transported more often than baits formulated with larval cuticle extract. In field tests, the venom gland extract reduced the time required for ants to detect baits and increased the transport of baits displayed at 0.2?m from the foraging trail or nest entrance. The increase in the transport of impregnated baits and the lower time to be transported might help to reduce the loss of bait in the field and decrease the risk of active ingredient contacts with non-target species.  相似文献

The adaptation of nest size to its population is one of the most common processes, but little is known about the dynamics nest-building and -enlarging in social context. Furthermore, the mechanisms involved remain totally ignored. We present here the first results of such dynamics in the context of Lasius niger's nest excavation. We find, with an artificial but standardized method, a strong positive correlation between the number of ants and the final nest volume as well as the digging rate. Both grow almost proportionally to population. When the number of individuals is artificially increased (even slightly) in a nest, its dimension is systematically adjusted in the same way as initial excavation. In this process, digging acts as a negative feedback that controls nest enlargement. Experiments revealed that this negative control is due directly to the volume of the nest as well as the physiological or behavioral modification of ants after digging. Finally, amplification of activity was observed during the enlargement phase, suggesting the possible implication of self-organized processes in the volume control mechanism.  相似文献

Some social insects produce workers of variable size and/or shape. One hypothesis to explain such variation is that it increases colony efficiency in performing diverse tasks, with greater efficiency leading to greater colony-level fitness. Using the granivorous ant Messor pergandei, which produces a unimodal distribution of worker sizes, I explored two corollaries of this ergonomic hypothesis: that there should be detectable task-matching and that the mean size should shift predictably with a change in task. In five experiments conducted in different years and sites in California deserts, colonies were baited with fragments of wheat or millet ground and sieved to different sizes. In six of eight colonies so baited the minimum linear dimension or mass of seeds carried by foragers was significantly related to forager size, with r2 values ranging from 3 to 30%. In four of the five experiments, colonies were subsequently baited with either large seed fragments alone or small fragments alone. In three of these four experiments I detected a rapid response, over a few hours or days, in which foragers deployed by colonies shifted to larger or smaller mean size in directions predicted by size of the bait. These results suggest that an ergonomic function is one contributor to worker size polymorphism in M. pergandei. Although task-matching did not explain a substantial amount of the variance in forager size in all experiments, the rapid size shifts provide behavioral evidence that task-matching is important to colonies.  相似文献

Summary The Southeast Asian antTetraponera sp. nearattenuata F. Smith inhabits internodes of large bamboo species that it shares with symbiotic pseudococcids. It finds access to this nesting habitat via small holes made by wood-boring insects. During heavy rain, runoff water collects in these punctured internodes. TheTetraponera workers remove the water by ingesting it, walking to the entrance hole, and regurgitating it to the outside. In this way, they 1) reduce the danger of colony members drowing, 2) enable their symbionts to feed also on the internode floor, and 3) prevent excessive growth of microbes in the nest.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of physical and chemical factors on transport and use of substrate for Atta sexdens rubropilosa workers. Three types of rectangular fragments were used to study the physical influence factors: filter paper with paraffin, filter paper without paraffin and polyester film. To study the chemical factors, some fragments were impregnated with organic extract of orange albedo, others were soaked with soybean oil and for the remaining ones nothing was applied. The fonowing parameters were evaluated: (i) attractiveness of substrate for transport and number of loading workers per treatment; (ii) foraged material incorporation; (iii) rejection by numbers of fragments deposited in the garbage or beside the fungus garden. All the polyester film fragments carried out to the fungus garden were subsequently rejected. We verified that chemical factors of the substrate were more quickly detected by the workers, whereas physical factors were used as a criterion in the decision-making to reject or accept the substrate collected.  相似文献

Summary Group recruitment during foraging was observed in a primitive ponerine ant,Amblyopone sp. (reclinata group) under laboratory condition. Workers searched for prey singly; however, if a item of prey was stung by a worker, other ants joined the attack. After the prey became immobile, one of the workers laid a trail directly toward the nest. This scout worker recruited additional workers (between 3 and 33). They formed a single file procession to the point of prey capture, and cooperatively transported the prey. A scout worker could stimulate nest workers to leave the nest without direct contact, and the recruited workers could trace the trail without guidance by the scout worker. This is the first report of recruitment behavior during foraging in the primitive antAmblyopone.  相似文献

We describe the isolation and characterization of 11 microsatellite loci in the sociobiologically enigmatic ant Lasius austriacus. The polymerase chain reaction primers were tested on a population in East Austria. The number of alleles ranged from four to 19 and the observed heterozygosity from 0.200 to 0.900. Cross‐species amplification tests were performed, with some loci polymorphic in all species tested, for the closely related invasive species Lasius neglectus, three further Lasius species, another formicine, Formica polyctena, and the invasive myrmicine species Tetramorium tsushimae.  相似文献

Summary The nest structure and colony cycle of a population of Allegheny mound ants,Formica exsectoides, were examined in central Michigan. The dispersion pattern of mounds was random. Nest structure and presence of brood were primarily determined by excavation of twenty-three nests over three intervals from June through September. Additional excavations of five nests in 1990 and ten nests in 1991 provided further details on nest structure and colony cycle. Most galleries occurred within the mound and upper 30 cm of soil, but some activity reached depths of 100 to 270 cm. Depth of nests showed little correlation with external measurements of height and diameter. Immature stages were recovered from two strata: the upper 20 cm of nest and mound and the lowest nest depths. Alate sexual forms were found in or near the mound in July, and numerous dealate queens were collected in September from peripheral galleries near the soil surface.  相似文献
