Summary Barley seeds have been germinated in gas mixtures containing ethylene (up to 20 vpm) and various amounts of oxygen (0.5–21.0 per cent). When oxygen was adequate, ethylene had no effect on germination but decreased root growth and increased top growth. Ethylene-treated roots were short, broad and curled. When inadequate oxygen slowed seedling growth, ethylene had no effect on roots but increased top growth. Effects of carbon dioxide concentration and of the residual effects of ethylene on seedling growth are also discussed.  相似文献

Immature Glycine max (L.) Merr. seeds initially at 50–70mg fresh weight were successfully grown and matured in vitroin detached pods. Surface sterilized pods were floated in aliquid medium containing 5 per cent sucrose, minerals, and glutaminein 125 ml Erlenmeyer flasks and incubated at 25 °C under350–400 µE m–1 s–1 white light. Seedswhich were matured in vitro increased tenfold in dry weight,were visually similar to commercial seeds of the same size,were tolerant to desiccation and germinated with normal seedlinggrowth. Excised pods transported dye from the pedicel to thegrowing seed within 120 min. Soya bean pod culture is a usefultechnique to study the influence of single or combinations ofchemical or environmental parameters on regulation of seed growth,seed maturation, and subsequent germination events without theconfounding interactions with the mother plant. Abscisic acid (ABA) was used as a reversible block to the progressof carrot seed germination in a practical seed treatment. Pre-treatingseeds with 10–4M ABA solution at 15 °C for 12 d gave93% germination of viable seeds on subsequent transfer to waterbefore radicle lengths became too long for fluid drilling. Thiscompared with only 31 % without pre-treatment ABA pretreatment significantly increased the synchrony of carrotseed germination and did not affect final percentage germinationor early seedling growth rates. The influence on carrot seed weight of cultivar, plant density,position of the seed on the plant, and of shading and removingumbels at different stages of growth was examined. CultivarDanvers produced seeds of approx. 2.5 mg, nearly twice as heavyas those of cv. Amsterdam with cv. Chantenay having an intermediateweight. Seeds from plants grown at 80 plants m–2 were,on average, approx. 20 per cent lighter than those from plantsgrown at 10 plants m–2 as were those from secondary thanprimary umbels. There were few differences in seed RGR betweencultivars, plant densities or seed positions and the differencesin seed weight produced by the treatments were largely associatedwith the duration of seed growth and with the volumes of theovary, ovule and embryo-sac at the time of fertilization. Shading(66 per cent reduction in irradiance) for the period of twoweeks before or two weeks after fertilization reduced seed weightcompared with unshaded plants. Removing the secondary and higherorder umbels from plants at these stages compared with no removalor removal at a later stage of growth increased seed weightof the remaining primary-umbel seed. Immature Glycine max (L.) Merrill seeds, initially between 50and 450 mg f. wt, were grown and matured successfully in vitro.Excised seeds were floated in a liquid medium containing 5 percent sucrose, minerals and glutamine in flasks incubated at25 °C under 300 to 350 µE m–2 s–1 fluorescentlight. During 16 to 21 d in culture, seeds grew to a matured. wt of 100 to 600 mg per seed at an average rate of 5 to 25mg d. wt per seed d–1 depending on initial size. Growthrates were maximal during the first 8 to 10 d in vitro but declinedwith loss of green colour in the cotyledons. Seed coats rupturedwith rapid cotyledon expansion during the first 2 d in culture.Embryos were tolerant to desiccation and 80 to 90 per cent germinatedif removed from culture before complete loss of green colour.The growth of excised seeds in vitro exceeded the growth ofseeds in detached pods, but when windows were cut in pods topermit direct exposure of seeds to the medium, seed growth wascomparable. Wheat seeds (Triticum durum) were stored under both hermeticand aerobic conditions at 25 °C with moisture contents from15 to 33 per cent. Under hermetic storage, seeds lost viabilitymore rapidly the higher the moisture content, whereas in aerobicstorage, seed longevity was enhanced as the moisture contentwas increased from 24 to 31 per cent, and over this range ofmoisture content the seeds survived longer under aerobic thanhermetic storage. On the contrary, an apparent reversal of thistrend occurred when moisture content was increased above 31per cent. The possibility that the changes in longevity occurring at highermoisture contents might be due to the activation of seed metabolismwas supported by the enhanced incorporation of [3H]leucine intoTCA insoluble material (indicating increased protein synthesis)and the reduced leakage of glucose (indicating increased membranerestitution) when seeds were allowed to achieve higher moisturecontents during the prehydration period. The highest level ofseed activation was found in seeds preconditioned to about 31per cent moisture content. Moreover, these seeds, when subsequentlystored under aerobic conditions, maintained a higher rate ofprotein synthesis and lower membrane permeability during thestorage period than seeds at lower water contents. It is suggested that seeds stored at a sufficient hydrationlevel in the presence of oxygen can sustain an effective metabolismduring extended storage, thus permitting the repair of cellulardamage. However, it might be possible that at about 33 per centmoisture content seed could suffer from an excessive advancementof metabolism. Components of seed yield of cv. Ultra (Lupinus albus L.) andcv. Unicrop (L. angustifolius L.) were measured when grown atthree densities. The low density (10 plants m–2) Unicropyield (34 g seed per plant) was 1.8 times that of Ultra as ithad more branches, pods and seeds per pod. Ultra seeds (310mg per seed) were heavier than Unicrop seeds (180 mg). The branchingpattern of Ultra was less dependent on plant density, henceat 93 plants m–2 it gave a higher per plant yield (7.4vs 6.4 g) than Unicrop at lower densities (83 plants m–2).Density had most influence on pod formation and only small effectson seeds per pod and seed weight. Yield components on the main-steminflorescence were influenced less by density than componentson branch inflorescences. Later formed, higher order generationsof inflorescences were most affected by increased inter- andintra-plant competition. Pod numbers on the main-stem were similarfor both species. Pods formed at higher flower nodes in Unicrop,but the lower flower nodes were less fertile than those in Ultra.Node position of flowers had no influence on seed set in main-stemUnicrop pods, but pods from higher nodes in Ultra formed fewerseeds. The cosmopolitan herb Rumex acetosella forms persistent soil seed banks and increases in cover after fire. We investigated how the interaction between seed age and fire affects seedling growth by exposing different‐aged seeds to heat, smoke, charcoal, and ash treatments. We measured growth of germinated seedlings that were transplanted and allowed to grow for 65 days in a greenhouse. Seedlings from seeds >8 years old did not reach an appropriate radicle length for transplantation. Seedling growth decreased with increasing temperature of the heat treatment. As seed age increased, growth decreased with smoke and charcoal, and increased with ash treatment. Height was negatively correlated with seed age. Our results suggest that fire and seed age could affect demographic responses of R. acetosella seedling populations. Post‐fire recruitment could be partially favored by the positive effect of nutrient input from ash on seedling growth. High fire intensities, however, would be detrimental to seedling vigor.  相似文献

Increasing the concentration of CO2 in the air from the usual300 ppm to 1, 000 ppm in growth rooms with temperatures of 20°C during the 16-h light period and 15° C during the 8-hdark period increased the total dry weight of sugar-beet, barley,and kale by about 5o per cent. A further increase in CO, concentrationto 3, 300 ppm increased dry weight slightly more. These effectsoccurred with light intensities ranging from 3.7 to II.6 caldm–2 min–1 of visible radiation supplied by a mixtureof fluorescent and tungsten lamps, and were only slightly greaterwith the brighter light. Extra CO2 also increased leaf area,though relatively less than dry weight, and the number of barleyshoots but not of sugar-beet or kale leaves; it decreased leaf-arearatio, specific leaf area, and the ratio of tops to roots. Maizewas taller with extra CO2. Net assimilation rates in 1, 000 and 3, 300 ppm CO2 were about20 and 30 per cent respectively greater than in 300 ppm. Uptakeof CO2 in the light by complete tops and single leaves alsoincreased with increase in CO2 concentration. Photosynthesisof leaves of plants recently transferred to a new CO2 concentrationdepended only on that concentration and not on the originalone. Doubling the light intensity from 3.7 to 7.7 cal dm–2min–1 affected dry weight, leaf area, net assimilationrate, etc., similarly to a tenfold increase in CO2 concentration.  相似文献

The relationship between seedling characters and germination rate within a seed lot was studied in cauliflower, leek and onion seeds. Newly germinated seeds were selected after successive days of imbibition at 20°C and placed on slope tests to assess early seedling growth. In all three species seedling length decreased and the coefficient of variation of those seedling lengths increased with increasing number of days of imbibition required for germination. Slow germinating seeds in all three species produced fewer normal healthy seedlings than faster germinating seeds. The relevance of these results to pre-germinated seed sowing techniques is discussed.  相似文献

Germinated seeds of Lactuca sativa (L.) were placed in Petri-dishesin (2-chloroethyl)-trimethyl-ammonium chloride (CCC; 0.005–0.05M), KN03 (0.01 M), and KC1 (0.01 M) solutions, and incubatedfor 2 or 5 days under continuous light. CCC strikingly arrestedchlorophyll accumulation, and retarded cotyledon growth relativelylittle. The retardant inhibited 14C-leucine incorporation intobulk proteins of the cotyledons. KN03 and KC1 promoted cotyledongrowth and chlorophyll synthesis per cotyledon by about 150per cent, and about doubled protein synthesis. Potassium saltscompletely reversed the inhibitory effects of CCC on chlorophylland protein synthesis. It is suggested that the inhibition ofgreening by CCC is dependent on a prior inhibition of proteinsynthesis.  相似文献

We investigated effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), the donor of nitric oxide (NO), on the growth and hormonal system of wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) in normal conditions and after salt stress (2% NaCl). During germination of seeds treated with SNP (50–500 μM), we obtained the SNP concentration (200 μM) optimal for stimulation of seedling growth estimated by increase in seed germination capacity and seedlings' linear sizes and their fresh and dry biomass. A comparative analysis of SNP (200 μM) effects, after seed germination in the medium with SNP or pretreatment of 3-day-old seedlings, showed SNP ability to increase the wheat plant resistance to subsequent effects of sodium chloride salinity at both treatment methods. Protective SNP effects appeared in the reduction of stress inhibitory action on seedling growth rates and significant reduction in the level of lipid peroxidation and exosmosis of electrolytes. An important contribution to realization of the growth-stimulating and protective effects of NO is associated with its ability to influence the state of the hormonal system of wheat plants due to an increase in the concentration of hormones of a cytokinin nature under normal conditions and the prevention of a decrease in their level under stress.  相似文献

Seeds of calabrese and carrot treated with fungicide were sownin soil at three levels of moisture stress causing a range ofeffects on seed germination or seedling emergence. After periodsof up to 3 weeks the soil was either rehydrated directly, orrehydrated after a short period of severe dehydration. Seedand seedling losses appeared to be almost entirely due to seedlingdeath after germination in the conditions of severe dehydration,but even then some germinated seeds survived these conditions.Seed deterioration or death was implicated only in carrot whenseeds were dehydrated after being held for from 1 to 3 weeksin soil at —10 ? 105 Pa. Carrot seed of four commercial varieties was separated intofractions by means of round-hole sieves. A fraction containingseed slightly larger than the average of the original samplewas selected and called graded seed. Graded and ungraded seedbatches were separately mixed with water in the ratio 10: 7by weight, kept covered in petri-dishes for 24 h at 20 °Cand then dried by exposure to the air at the same temperature.Three cycles of this ‘hardening’ treatment werecarried out. The varieties differed in their response, but ingeneral the combined hardening and grading treatment was oftenmore effective than the separate treatments and resulted ina 25 per cent increase in seedling weight, a rise in the fieldemergence percentage from 64 to 75 per cent, and increases inyield of 10 per cent above a control of 46 t ha–1. Therapidity of seedling emergence was increased by the hardeningtreatment alone and the time over which the whole populationof seedlings emerged was reduced by the grading treatment only.Weather conditions caused a double ‘flush’ of germinationin part of the field experiment and the hardening treatmentreduced the proportion of undesirable second flush from 50 to30 per cent.  相似文献

Nitrogen fertilizer applied to sugar-beet increased plant androot dry weight and leaf area, and decreased the sugar contentof the roots per cent of both fresh and dry weight. Change inleaf area accounted wholly for the increase in plant dry weightproduced by nitrogen, because net assimilation rate was unaffected.Nitrogen did not alter the partition of the total assimilatebetween roots and shoots, but increased the fraction of totalassimilate entering the roots that was used in growth, at theexpense of that stored as sugar. Thus, plants with more nitrogenhad a smaller proportion of their root dry weight as sugar becausemore was metabolized in growth of the roots, and not becauseless entered the roots. The heavier roots of plants given more nitrogen were largerin cross-sectional area because the areas of both parenchymaand vascular zones of each peripheral ring within the root werelarger; the number of rings was not increased. Nitrogen increasedthe areas of the tissues in these zones by enlarging cell volumes,not by increasing the number of cells within the tissues. Increasein cell volume was accompanied by proportional increases inthe weights of non-sugar dry matter per cell and water per cell,but the amount of sugar per cell was proportional to cell volumeonly during the initial stage of cell expansion up to cell volumesof about 15x10–8 cm2; thereafter it was less than proportional,so that sugar per cent of both fresh and dry weight decreasedas cell size increased beyond 15x10–8 cm2. The relationof sugar per cell to cell volume was the same with both amountsof nitrogen given. This implies that increase in nitrogen supplymade the sugar concentration of the root less by increasingthe size of the root cells and not by a specific effect on sugarstorage.  相似文献

Near-ultraviolet or ‘black’ light applied continuously from the start of incubation, facilitates tests for Phoma betae on sugar-beet seed by stimulating the production of pycnidia and restricting mycelial growth of P. betae and other fungi. Pretreatment of the seed with dilute sodium hypochlorite decreases the number of seeds with P. betae by removing superficial infection, but some of this is of significance in the field. Rubbing beet seed also decreased counts of P. betae in the laboratory and increased field emergence, primarily by removing the fungus. Griseofulvin sprayed on beet-seed plants either 2 wk or 2 days before harvest significantly decreased seed infection with P. betae, but not to a level at which further seed treatment could be omitted.  相似文献

研究了侧柏(Platycladus orientalis)根、枝、叶、果实不同浓度水提取物及枝叶挥发油对油松种子萌发和幼苗生长的他感效应。结果表明:侧柏各器官及挥发油都含有化感物质,均对油松种子萌发及幼苗生长表现出“高抑低促”效应,而且低浓度时的促进作用明显强于高浓度时的抑制作用。与对照相比,在浓度为2 mg·mL-1时,侧柏根水提取物对油松幼苗根长和鲜重的促进能力最强,其根长和鲜重分别比对照提高了79.78%和376.60%;侧柏叶水提取物对油松幼苗苗高促进能力最强,比对照提高了102.41%;侧柏枝水提取物对油松种子发芽的促进能力最强,发芽率比对照提高了65.63%。而在浓度为30 mg·mL-1时,除了侧柏根和枝水提取物对油松种子萌发(87.50%)和鲜重(85.11%)表现出明显的抑制作用外,其它提取物对油松幼苗根长和苗高生长的抑制作用均不明显。侧柏枝叶挥发油对油松种子萌发,幼苗生长均表现为促进作用,特别对油松种子萌发具有显著的促进作用,其促进率达70.37%。说明侧柏和油松混交,可能有利于油松树木生长及生产力的提高。  相似文献

Merr.] develop, they undergoa change in seed moisture. When excised prematurely from thepod and planted, seeds do not exhibit seedling growth until63 d after flowering (DAF) when the seed moisture has fallenbelow 60%. In contrast, seed germination (radicle protrusion)can occur when seeds as young as 35 DAF (68–79% moisture)are excised, but this germination docs not lead to comparableseedling growth frequencies unless seeds are first given a moistureloss treatment to artificially reduce their moisture below 60%.A moisture loss treatment applied at 35 DAF thus enables seedto undergo the transition from germination (cell expansion)to seedling growth (cell division and expansion) to the extentthat treated immature seed have a vigour index comparable toseeds matured on the plant (100%). The pattern of protein synthesisin vivo was examined in 35 DAF seed using [35S]-methionine incorporation.When moisture loss treatment was applied for 24 h to 35 DAFseeds, seeds synthesized several new polypeptides when comparedwith untreated seeds at the same developmental stage. The sameseed samples showed 0% seedling growth in the absence of moistureloss treatment and 80% seedling growth when the treatment hadbeen applied. Moisture loss from soybean seeds appears to bea prerequisite for the synthesis of new proteins which may bepart of the metabolic process or processes that allow the soybeanseed to undergo the transition from seed germination to seedlinggrowth. Crisp lettuce plants cv. Saladin were grown from the time they started flowering, at 20/10°C (16 h day, 8 h night), 25/15°C and 30/20°C in glasshouses on two occasions in 1985. Yields of seed increased from, on average, 15 g to 27 g and then fell to 20 g per plant with progressive increases in temperature. The number of mature florets per plant increased with temperature but the number of seeds per mature floret was lower at 20/10°C and 30/20°C than at 25/15°C. An increase in temperature reduced mean seed weight by up to 45%, seed volume by 15%, cell numerical volume density (Nv) by 27% and the number of cells per seed by 39%. Percentage seed germination reached a maximum early in seed development at the stage when the pappus appeared through the involucral bracts. Differences in percentage germination and vigour of seeds (slope test) from different temperatures were accounted for largely by the effects on mean seed weight. However, when germinated at 30°C seeds produced at 30/20°C germinated more readily than those produced at 25/15°C or 20/10°C. Seed vigour gradually increased with an increase in the length of storage after harvest, reaching a maximum after 260 days. In general, seeds produced at 25/15°C exhibited a greater variation in numbers of seeds per floret, Nv, seed weight, times of seedling emergence, seedling and mature head weight than seeds produced at lower or higher temperatures.  相似文献
