We assessed prezygotic (probability of spawning) and postzygotic (hatching success) reproductive isolation among the three ecologically and morphologically similar species in the Fundulus notatus species complex. We employed a multi-generation breeding experiment to test the hypotheses that karyotypic differences, body size differences, or geographic isolation among populations will increase pre or postzygotic reproductive barriers. Overall, prezygotic barriers were strong and postzygotic barriers weak in crosses of non-hybrid heterospecifics (F1 hybrid crosses) while prezygotic barriers were weaker and postzygotic barriers stronger in crosses involving hybrid individuals (F2 hybrid crosses and backcrosses). Prezygotic barriers among the two smaller species (Fundulus notatus and F. euryzonus) broke down rapidly; first generation hybrids spawned (F2 hybrid crosses and backcrosses) as frequently as parental forms in intraspecific crosses. There was no increase in postzygotic barriers among species with cytogenetic differences. There were increased prezygotic, but not postzygotic, barriers among geographically isolated populations of one species. While pure males and females were just as likely to spawn with hybrids, some types of hybrid females suffered from increased sterility, but not inviability, over hybrid males. Female sterility was only seen in hybrids with a Fundulus euryzonus parent, while other female hybrids produced viable eggs.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction of Rhopaloeides odorabile, a common Great Barrier Reef sponge, was quantified using histological sections from samples collected over two reproductive seasons. Rhopaloeides odorabile is viviparous and gonochoristic with a male biased sex ratio (2.5:1). Commencement and cessation of gametogenesis coincides with rising and falling sea surface temperatures (≈24–29°C). Spermatogenesis occurs from October until January. Females initiate oogenesis in September with the asynchronous development of oocytes, embryos and larvae occurring within the brood chambers. A larval release period of 5–6 weeks occurs during January and February. The minimum size of reproductive individuals was 176 cm3 for females and 192 cm3 for males. The total reproductive output for both sexes shows a positive correlation with size. A relative reproductive output index quantified the maximum reproductive investment at approximately 1 and 3% of the total choanoderm for females and males, respectively, which represents a lower range of reproduction in comparison to other viviparous sponges. Low reproductive output in R. odorabile may be offset by an extended spawning period, alleviating the risk of releasing larvae in potentially adverse conditions via one synchronised spawning event and increasing overall larval survival.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if individual ticks among the progeny of a single female Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus tick removed from cattle under natural conditions are the result of mating with one or several males. To this end, simulations were run using an existing dataset of genotypes from 8 microsatellite loci to predict the number of samples required and the best locus. Subsequently, 14–22 progeny from each of 15 engorged female ticks removed from three cows, and the engorged females themselves, were genotyped for the BmM1 locus and the minimum number of potential male parents was determined for each progeny group. Of the 15 progeny groups, 10 must have been sired by more than one male, as indicated by the presence of five unique alleles among the progeny or three unique alleles that could not have been contributed by the female. This finding demonstrates multiple paternity in R. microplus.  相似文献

The reproductive behaviors of the marine goby Asterropteryx semipunctata were studied at Sakurajima, Kagoshima, Japan. Spawning occurred from late June to early October with a peak at 3–4 days after the full and new moon. This semi-lunar cycle might be advantageous to reducing nest-egg mortality but may not to larvae dispersion. Large males maintained spawning nests, and females spawned a whole clutch at a nest but with multiple males during a season. Females were less likely to be choosy due probably to a predation risk and/or nesting male shortage. Smaller males adopted sneaking tactics, and some of them became nesting males.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to describe the peculiarities of pike spawning in mesotrophic Lake Rubikiai, to determine the spawning population structure and evaluate the influence of some environmental factors on year-class strength formation. The data were collected in April and May (1994–2011). A total of 1586 individuals were caught. The age of pike ranged from 1 to 12 years; 2–5-yearold males (96.0%) and 3–8-year-old females (89.1%) prevailed. The overall sex ratio of females to males was 1:4.1. One-year-old spawning males (26.5–28.5 cm) and two-year-old spawning females (31.5–35.5 cm) constituted 2.1% and 2.6%, respectively. Water temperature during the spawning period was relatively stable, between 4 and 6°C, during March and increased slightly towards 10°C in the middle of April. No correlation was observed between female length and spawning date. Year-class strength did not correlate with the last day of ice presence and the minimal water level at the end of spawning (WLmin), but statistically significantly negatively correlated with the maximum water level at the beginning of spawning (WLmax) and the difference between WLmax and WLmin. The mean annual survival rate for pike (aged ≥2) was 0.74 and the mean annual instantaneous mortality rate was 0.45.  相似文献

Tetranychus turkestani Ugarov and Nikolskii and Tetranychus urticae Koch RF (red form) (Acari: Tetranychidae) are closely related species. Previously, the two species were found in separate agricultural habitats in Israel. Here, additional collections were undertaken and mixed populations of the two species were found. Manipulation experiments were conducted in order to test whether sexual interactions occur when T. turkestani and T. urticae RF share the same host. Interspecific crosses showed that the two species are capable of producing viable F1 females, but that these females are sterile as their F2 eggs failed to hatch. This indicates a post-zygotic reproductive barrier, supporting the current placement of T. turkestani as a separate taxon. Mating behavior parameters revealed that males of both species courted virgin conspecific and heterospecific females at the same rate and readily tried to copulate with them. Female mate recognition seemed to be more reliable in T. turkestani than in T. urticae RF as the number of copulations was significantly higher and their duration significantly shorter in the T. turkestani interspecific (T. turkestani ♀ × T. urticae RF ♂) as compared to the intraspecific crosses, a phenomenon not observed in T. urticae RF. In mixed cultures, a significant reduction in female production was observed for T. urticae RF but not for T. turkestani, suggesting an asymmetric reproductive interference effect in favor of T. turkestani. The long term outcome of this effect is yet to be determined since additional reproductive factors such as oviposition rate and progeny survival to adulthood may reduce the probability of demographic displacement of one species by the other in overlapping niches.  相似文献

Sexually matured rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were experimentally infected with the pathogenic Cryptobia salmositica. Spawning female trout were more susceptible to cryptobiosis than sexually mature males. Most infected females (seven of nine) with eggs died before or shortly after spawning while all (nine) infected males survived the disease. Also, none of the uninfected females died. Males initially increased milt production and sperm concentration; however semen production declined as the disease progressed. Sperm from infected males fertilized more eggs than those from non-infected males. No differences in weight and survival were observed between progeny of infected and uninfected males.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted to understand the influence of host size on the reproductive performance of Nesolynx thymus, an ecto-pupal parasitoid of the uzi fly, Exorista bombycis, inflicting 10–20% loss to silkworm crops in the southern silk producing states of India. Two day-old adults of N. thymus were allowed to parasitize pupae of M. domestica, categorized into big and small at a parasitoid-host ratio of 1:20. After parasitoid adult eclosion, data on parasitization rate, developmental duration, male, female and total adult recovery per pupa and per female, sex ratio, adult size and adult longevity were recorded. The performance of first generation adults as influenced by host size was also recorded by allowing the first generation adults to parasitize three day-old pupae of E. bombycis. The parameters female and total progeny production per female, sex ratio, longevity, body length and wing span of males, females, head width of male, and abdomen length of female increased significantly with host size. No impact of host size was observed on performance of first generation adults.  相似文献

Dissections of mature and non-mature European hake males and females (N = 142) collected in waters off the western coast of Norway and in the Bay of Biscay (France) in 2004–2006 demonstrate for the first time that this gadoid species contains drumming muscles. There were differences in drumming muscles weight with body length, sex and maturity stage. This study shows that the difference between females and males is primarily manifested during the spawning season, seen both in the French and Norwegian samples. For the mature females the drumming muscles dry weight increases only slightly, if at all, with increase in total length. For mature males there is a corresponding rapid increase. There does not seem to be any consistent difference between the average dry weight of the drumming muscles in immature male and immature and mature female hake of the same length, tested on the Norwegian samples. Our results suggest that male hake, like the males of other gadoids studied, may produce sounds in the context of spawning.  相似文献

The sperm allocation pattern of a copulating marine cottid fish, Alcichthys alcicornis, was investigated. A total of 86 mating events using six males were conducted in aquarium tanks over 10 days, and in 36 of them, spermatozoa were collected using a false copulation method. Males released 3–8 × 108 spermatozoa in early events, with the number decreasing gradually during subsequent mating events. This sperm allocation was represented as an “early investment and tapering” pattern. It was discussed why males have significantly higher sperm release in early spawning events. The reproductive behavior consists of spawning and subsequent copulation. Spermatozoa have the ability to fertilize eggs from multiple clutches, and in earlier produced clutches the level of sperm competition should be relatively low. In addition, if early spawn happens to be the first spawn with a female, spermatozoa that are released into the water column after spawning are responsible for fertilizing the female’s first clutch. The probability of this occurring should decrease dramatically as the season progresses, due to the highly synchronous seasonal spawning of females. All of these factors should select for high sperm numbers in early ejaculates. Based on such reproductive ecology of A. alcicornis we hypothesize that this sperm allocation pattern is an adaptive reproductive strategy in response to egg availability and sperm competition occurring within the ovarian cavity.  相似文献

The toxicity of para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), the main arthropod-repellent compound in the oil of the lemon eucalyptus, Corymbia citriodora, was evaluated against nymphs of Ixodes ricinus using five methods (A–E) of a contact toxicity bioassay. Mortality rates were estimated by recording numbers of dead nymphs at 30 min intervals during the first 5 h after the start of exposure and at longer intervals thereafter. The mortality rate increased with increasing concentration of PMD and duration of exposure with a distinct effect after 3.5 h. From the results obtained by methods A, C and E, the LC50 range was 0.035–0.037 mg PMD/cm2 and the LC95 range was 0.095–0.097 mg PMD/cm2 at 4 h of exposure; the LT50 range was 2.1–2.8 h and the LT95 range was 3.9–4.2 h at 0.1 mg PMD/cm2. To determine the duration of toxic activity of PMD, different concentrations (0.002, 0.01, 0.1 mg PMD/cm2) were tested and mortality was recorded at each concentration after 1 h; thereafter new ticks were tested. This test revealed that the lethal activity of PMD remained for 24 h but appeared absent after 48 h. The overall results show that PMD is toxic to nymphs of I. ricinus and may be useful for tick control.  相似文献

29 quantitative and 18 qualitative skull characters were studied in the African large barbs (Barbus intermedius complex) from Lake Tana (Ethiopia). Based on results of principle components analysis phenetic relationships of 12 morphotypes were assessed. External features diagnostic of the morphotypes were found in individuals substantially different in the skull characters. The obtained data along with the data on morphological diversity of large barbs from Ethiopia beyond the Lake Tana basin suggest origination of the Lake Tana complex of forms from a complex of forms that existed in the upper reaches of the Blue Nile before the lake came into being, and the extant morphotypes of the Lake Tana barbs originated from three or four forms that composed the ancestral riverine local complex.  相似文献

Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), commonly called gram pod borer, is a serious pest of pulse crops in India and damages chickpea (Cicer arietinum L). On average a 30% crop loss is reported. One of the potential natural enemies reported for its biological control is Campoletis chlorideae Uchida (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), an idiobiont parasitic wasp that attacks second instar larvae of the pod borer. Male-biased sex ratios hinder efforts to mass release parasitic Hymenoptera for biological control by making the production of females costly. Parental age at time of mating is known to affect the progeny sex ratio in some Braconidae. In this view, we examined the reproduction and survival of the parasitoid C. chlorideae in the laboratory [22 ± 4°C, 70 ± 10% R.H. and 10:14 h light:dark photoperiod]. All the nine (i.e. 3 × 3) combinations of possible mating were made for males and females, being each of different age groups (0–12, 48–60 and 96–108 h old). Second instar larvae of the pod borer were reared on chickpea and exposed to mated females of different mating age group combinations. Results revealed that (a) newly emerged females (0–12 h old) mated to aged males yielded more progeny contrasted to the older females inseminated by newly emerged males (0–12 h old). This implies that increased maternal age at mating caused greater reduction in the progeny yield than that of paternal age; (b) the progeny sex ratio was lowest (0.344 ± 0.057) (mean ± SD) when parents mated just after emergence (0–12 h old). It became more and more male biased as parents were deprived of mate and was highest (0.666 ± 0.701) for 96–108 h old parents. The analysis of variance of the data shows that mate deprived males caused greater contribution in the production of sons, resulting a male-biased progeny sex ratio. Our conclusion indicate that newly emerged parasitoids (0–12 h old) are most fecund and should be used in rearing practices in order to enhance the progeny yield, particularly with respect to daughters. The PROMOTION OF CELL SURVIVAL 1 (PCS1) gene, encoding an aspartic protease, has an important role in determining the fate of cells in embryonic development and reproduction processes in Arabidopsis. To explore the potential function of the PCS1 gene in generating reproductive sterility, we placed the PCS1 gene under the control of an 1,869-bp nucleotide sequence from the 3′ end of the second intron (AG-I) of Arabidopsis AGAMOUS and CaMV 35S (–60) minimal promoter [AG-I-35S (60)::PCS1], and introduced it into tobacco. RT–PCR results demonstrated that the PCS1 gene driven by AG-I-35S (60) chimeric promoter was expressed only in anthers and carpels in the reproductive tissues of transgenic tobacco. Compared to wild-type plants, all AG-I-35S (60) and AG-I-35S (60)::PCS1 transgenic lines showed a normal phenotype throughout the vegetative growth phase. However, during the reproductive stage, most AG-I-35S (60)::PCS1 transgenic plant anthers displayed delayed dehiscence, failed dehiscence, petalody and hypoplasia, and the pollen grains had different shapes and sizes with a distorted, shrunken, or collapsed morphology. Moreover, three transgenic lines, PCS1-1, PCS1-3 and PCS1-4, showed higher sterility than wild-type and AG-I-35S (60) transgenic plants, respectively. These results showed that the construct of AG-I-35S (60)::PCS1 was partially effective at preventing seed set and provided a novel sterility strategy.  相似文献

Various aspects of the reproductive biology of two archer fishes Toxotes chatareus and Toxotes jaculatrix were studied to describe gonad development, spawning season, sex ratio, and fecundity. Spawning season was assessed using monthly changes in gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological inspection of the gonads. Both species exhibit two modes of oocytes; a mode of small primary growth oocytes and a single mode that increases with size as oocytes sequester vitellogenin and undergo maturation, showing the synchronous oocyte development typical of total spawners. Based on GSI values and advanced stages of oocyte maturity, T. chatareus and T. jaculatrix, females appear to spawn from November to December. The average fecundity of female T. chatareus was 55 000 ± 5538 eggs, and T. jaculatrix was 50 000 ± 3440 eggs; fecundity ranged from 20 000 to 150 000 eggs for both species, with relative fecundities of 600 to 1100 eggs/g body weight, and a mean value of 800 ± 32 for T. chatareus; relative fecundity ranged from 500 to 1100 with a mean value of 700 ± 23 for T. jaculatrix. Sex ratio, defined as the proportion of males to females, was 2.2 and 2.5 in T. chatareus and T. jaculatrix, respectively. The apparent abundance of males in samples could be due to females being positioned lower in the water column and therefore being sampled less frequently. Our results indicate that in both species, spawning occurs between the months of November and December during the monsoon season, which provides the mangrove coastal waters inhabited by these species with an abundance of food resources and additional floodplain nursery habitat for larvae and juveniles.  相似文献

Seasonal activities of the digestive enzyme trypsin were measured between August 1998 and May 1999 to study different nutritional strategies of the two copepods Pseudocalanus minutus and Oithona similis in the Arctic Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) using a highly sensitive fluorescence technique. Stage-, depth- and season-specific characteristics of digestive activity were reflected in the trypsin activity. P. minutus females and stage V copepodids (C) had highest trypsin activities in spring during reproduction (197.5 and 145.7 nmol min−1 ng C−1, respectively). In summer stages CIII–V and in autumn stages CIV and V had high activities (80–116 nmol min−1 ng C−1) in the shallow layer (< 100 m) presumably as a consequence of prolonged feeding before descending to overwintering depth. Trypsin activities at depth (> 100 m) in summer and autumn were low in stages CIII and CIV (29–60 nmol min−1 ng C−1) and in winter in all stages in both layers (20–43 nmol min−1 ng C−1). Based on low trypsin activity, males most likely did not feed. In O. similis, the spring phytoplankton bloom did not significantly affect trypsin activity as compared to the other seasons. O. similis CV and females had high trypsin activities in summer in the deep stratum (304.5 nmol min−1 ng C−1), which was concomitant with reproductive processes and energy storage for overwintering. In autumn, stage CV and female O. similis had significantly higher activities than stage CIV (130–152 versus 78 nmol min−1 ng C−1), which is in accordance with still ongoing developmental and reproductive processes in CVs and females. Comparisons of both species revealed different depth-related responses emphasizing different nutritional preferences: the mainly herbivorous P. minutus is more actively feeding in the shallow layer, where primary production occurs, whereas the omnivorous O. similis is not as much restricted to a certain depth layer, when searching for food. P. minutus had lower levels of trypsin activity during all seasons. In contrast to P. minutus, higher enzyme activities in males of O. similis suggest that they continue to feed and survive after fertilization of females.  相似文献

To investigate the life history and ecology of the mudskipper Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus, observations and collection were made on coastal mudflats in southern Korea. Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus was active from May to September on the mudflats, exclusively occupying rough and elevated or sloped mudflats of the seashore or the stream mouth, usually vegetated with halophilous grasses. The congeneric species, P. modestus, mainly occurred on extensive low-elevation and level mudflats with no visible vegetation. An apparent alternation of habitat use by P. modestus took place on mudflats at the stream mouth in mid-October, when P. magnuspinnatus began wintering in its burrow and P. modestus came onto the vacated mudflats to construct burrows for wintering. The active season for P. magnuspinnatus at 17°C or higher air temperature was a little shorter than that of P. modestus. Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus constructed a burrow for the entire season in the highest area of the intertidal mudflat, where they hid themselves during high tide or when frightened, whereas P. modestus were likely to use any burrow constructed by other animals or sunken places to hide. The main stomach contents of P. magnuspinnatus were crabs and gammarids. During the reproductive season from May to July, P. magnuspinnatus performed mating behaviors and constructed a spawning burrow similar to the ones known for P. modestus, except their body color turned dark and quivering body movements were observed in the mature male instead of a pink or orange body color and wiggling body movements as in P. modestus. Eggs, measuring 1.56–1.69 mm in major axis and 0.94–1.0 mm in minor axis, were laid on the ceiling and the side wall of the “J”-shaped spawning room generally known for Periophthalmus species. Young of both species started to occur on the mudflat in June.  相似文献

The predatory copepod Acanthocyclops americanus is commonly found in shallow ponds and lakes in Mexico. We tested the survivorship and reproduction-related variables of this copepod, isolated from Lake Huetzalin (Xochimilco, Mexico City), on four mixed diets comprising two algal concentrations (0.8 × 106 and 1.6 × 106 cells ml−1 of Scenedesmus acutus) and two rotifer densities (1 and 8 ind. ml−1 of Brachionus havanaensis). Survivorship patterns of naupliar and adult stages of A. americanus were evaluated at 24 ± 1°C. The demography experiments were initiated with five females and five males (1:1 ratio, 5th copepodites) into each of the 16 test [= 4 diet combinations × 4 replicates (cohorts)] jars containing 50 ml medium and with one of the chosen algal-rotifer diets. Data on the survival of naupliar and copepodites (up to V) showed a high death rate (80%) in A. americanus by the time nauplii reached the adult stage. The duration of developmental time for nauplii and the copepodite V (C-V) was about 28 days by which time A. americanus became adults. Food combination had a significant effect on both survival and duration of the naupliar and C-V but not on the development time in C-I, C-II, C-III, and C-IV. Naupliar stages showed highest life expectancy at low food levels (rotifers or alga). Adult male and female copepods showed better survival under higher availability of rotifers in the medium, while higher algal density resulted in steep mortality during the first days. Average adult lifespan and life expectancy of A. americanus varied from 19 to 23 days, depending on the diet combination. Age-specific reproductive output (m x ) of female A. americanus showed low reproduction (<10 offspring per female on any given day) when raised on low rotifer density, regardless of the algal concentration. On the other hand, enhanced offspring production (average of about 50 nauplii per female) was recorded when the rotifer density was higher (i.e., 8 ind. ml−1). Gross and net reproductive rates varied from 48 to 438 and 27 to 318 offspring per female, respectively. In general, higher availability of rotifers in the medium resulted in higher (8–10 times as compared to those in low rotifer density) gross and net reproductive rates. There was no significant difference in the generation time (13–14 days) in relation to the diet combination. The rate of population increase (r) (range: 0.29–0.69 per day) increased with greater abundance of B. havanaensis in the medium. Thus, our study showed that inclusion of animal protein in the diet is necessary for high population growth rates of A. americanus.  相似文献

Changes in spawning habitat of northern pike (Esox lucius) may affect their segregation from and coexistence with the closely related muskellunge (E. masquinongy). We estimated the areal coverage of robust and shallow emergent vegetation in three shared-spawning bays in the Upper St. Lawrence River from aerial photographs taken from 1948 to 2003. Robust emergent vegetation (e.g., cattail) increased in coverage by 155–241% while shallow emergents (sedges) decreased by 46–96%. The loss of sedges, an important northern pike-spawning habitat, may facilitate greater spawning overlap in offshore-submersed aquatic vegetation within bay habitats used by muskellunge. Development rates and characteristics of northern pike and muskellunge eggs and larvae were compared to better understand the implications of greater spawning overlap. Northern pike eggs developed faster than muskellunge eggs at temperatures of 4.7–19°C, and adhesive eggs and the presence of adhesive papillae were present in both species. Equations were used to predict degree-day requirements for hatching and swim-up in three habitats (shallow emergents, bay, and offshore shoal) along a temperature gradient. Northern pike required more estimated degree days to reach hatching in bay and offshore shoal habitat relative to shallow emergent habitat due to cooler temperatures. Significant spawning overlap is known to occur within bay habitats, but poor success of northern pike in deep bay habitats and overall reductions in abundance are hypothesized to currently buffer muskellunge from potential negative interactions between these species. Morphological and genetic differences between red and yellow morphotypes of Sebastes owstoni were investigated, utilizing 277 males [84.0–194.3 mm in standard length (SL)] and 542 females (92.3–251.5 mm SL) from the Sea of Japan. All males smaller than 120 mm SL were characterized by red body color. The frequency of specimens with yellow body color thereafter increased gradually with SL, all specimens larger than 170 mm SL being yellow. The specimens with yellow body color were observed throughout the year. All females smaller than 170 mm SL were characterized by red body color, the frequency of specimens with yellow body color tending to slightly increase with SL. However, most females had red body color, except for 16 specimens (177.7–241.5 mm SL) that were yellow, growth-related color change from red to yellow being uncommon. Morphological analysis of 49 males (107.6–193.3 mm SL) and 68 females (108.7–241.5 mm SL) showed the head length, orbit diameter, lower jaw length, and predorsal length to be relatively greater, but the distance between the pelvic and anal fins less, in males. A discriminant analysis using Mahalanobis distances resulted in 100% correct assignment of specimens to sex, regardless of SL and body color. In addition, no genetic differences were apparent between red and yellow individuals in mitochondrial DNA sequence analyses from the threonine tRNA to the first half of the control region (498 bp). Accordingly, the differences in body color, maximum size, and the five morphometric characters listed above were considered to represent sexual dimorphism. That evidenced by body color was considered to appear after that shown by morphometric characters, some exceptions in the former occurring in females. This is the first report of permanent sexual dimorphism in body color in Sebastes.  相似文献
