Host fishes (Boops boops) parasitized by the cymothoid isopod Meinertia oestroides show an atrophied tonuge: its length and its initial weight can decrease of about 50%. These morphological variations are connected with deep histological alterations, such as: A more or less important vanishing of epidermis. A disorganization of the connective tissue, by numerous invading blood cells. A total vanishing of cargilage and a partial vanishing of bone, resulting from the lysis of their own fundamental substance.  相似文献

Cymothoid fish parasites settle on hosts in ways that may impact fish health and energetics. High abundances of Artystone minima observed in Nannostomus beckfordi from the Jeju River in eastern Amazonia were investigated to answer the following questions: (a) What factors are associated with the high prevalence at this locality?; (b) Is high abundance associated with co‐infestation of alternative hosts?; and (c) Is parasite presence associated with host species growth and/or reproduction? Fish assemblages were sampled quarterly (August 2017–May 2018) from five habitats along with environmental data. Parasitic indices were calculated, and parasite presence used to evaluate differences in growth of hosts using analysis of covariance considering host sex and sampling season (wet vs. dry). Parasites were only abundant in one of the habitats, a large, shallow backwater bay with macrophytes. Abiotic environmental factors (flow and depth) likely impact parasite transmission and are, therefore, particularly important in producing these local patterns. Two secondary hosts, Hyphessobrycon cf. rosaceus and Moenkhausia collettii, were found in the wet season. Based on host biology compared to other fish in the habitat, parasite infestation is inferred to be depth associated and long‐term infestation is apparently limited in alternative hosts. Parasite presence was significantly associated with reduced weight (standardized for length) of female Nannostomus beckfordi in the wet season. Furthermore, ovaries of non‐parasitized females from the wet season presented a range of maturation stages, while parasitized females were all immature, indicating a significant association of parasites with host reproductive capacity. The free amino-acid composition of the sera of 4 species of Isopods Cymothoidae (Meinertia oestroides, Meinertia parallela, Emetha audouini, Anilocra physodes) are very similar, and present the same characteristics, both quantitatively and qualitatively, as those of free marine Isopods of the family Sphaeromatidae and Idoteidae. Five amino acids are preponderant (serin, prolin, glycin, alanin and taurin). The total concentration is relatively high (154.6-356.4 mg/100 ml) with respect to Decapods. In the parasites studied so far, the free amino-acid pattern (except prolin) is rather like that of the Teleost Fishes, whether they are potential hosts of Cymothoidae or not. The free amino-acid concentration of the blood of the Fishes does not seem to be impaired by the Cymothoidae parasitism.  相似文献

Age, growth and mortality of red bandfish, Cepola macrophrhalma (L.), from the western Aegean Sea were studied using the otoliths from 1113 fish and the length and weight of 3351 fish. Two regions were established (north and south of the Euripos Strait). The red bandfish grows allometrically (slope of length-weight regressions ≤2) and relatively rapidly until age 4 or 5 years. It is proposed that this rapid linear growth represents an adaptation which evolved to reduce the vulnerability of red bandfish to whole-fish swallowers. Back-calculated lengths-at-age showed significant differences between regions and between sexes. Males were larger than females after age 2 years. Maximum age of northern fish was also higher than southern fish (8 and 5 years respectively). Southern fish grow at a faster rate (K=0.379) but to a significantly smaller size (Lx=424.8mm t.l. , Wx=25.1 g) than northern fish (K=0.214, Lx=676.1 mm t.l. , Wx=90.9 g). Mortality rates (total and natural instantaneous mortalities) of southern fish were also higher than northern fish. We suggest that these variations represent responses to the different conditions of temperature and food availability prevailing in the two regions.  相似文献

Age and growth of Labeo bata (Ham.) was studied by the analysis of annuli found on the scale and by length-frequency distribution. The fish attained lengths of 131, 194, 236, 277, 314, 341 and 364 mm at the end of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th years of life respectively. The increase in length of scale bears a constant relationship with the increase in length of fish, and regression analysis yielded a straight line between scale and body length. Calculated values could be expressed as: Y = –2.534 + 0.064 XThe growth rate of the fish was found high during the 1st and 2nd years and decreased gradually afterwards till the 7th year. Both sexes showed more a or less similar growth rate and attained a similar longevity. Growth trend of the fish confirmed the von Bertalanffy growth equation: Lt = 450(l–e–0.2165(t+0.5963)) The seasonal growth curve was chiefly influenced by feeding intensity in fishes of 1st year class while in adults it was affected by feeding intensity as well as by maturation of the gonads.  相似文献

The distribution, total length ( L T) frequency and diet of Patagonotothen guntheri are described from 14 bottom trawl surveys conducted on the Shag Rocks and South Georgia shelves in the austral summers from 1986 to 2006. Patagonotothen guntheri (80–265 mm L T) were caught on the Shag Rocks shelf from depths of 111 to 470 m, but no specimens were caught on the South Georgia shelf. Multiple cohorts were present during each survey and L T-frequency analysis of these cohorts suggests that growth was slow (von Bertalanffy K = 0·133). Evidence from stomach contents and acoustic data (2005 and 2006) showed that P. guntheri is primarily a pelagic feeder, migrating from the sea floor towards the surface to feed during daylight. The diet of smaller fish (<140 mm) was dominated by copepods, predominantly Rhincalanus gigas , whilst larger fish principally consumed the pelagic hyperiid amphipod, Themisto gaudichaudii and Antarctic krill Euphausia superba . Some larger fish also took benthic prey.  相似文献

We evaluated the effects of inbreeding on traits related to territorial dominance and tested whether the magnitude of inbreeding depression (ID) was modified by social environment in Coho salmon. Evaluation of behaviour in paired contests between juvenile salmon with different inbreeding (low, LI=9.5%; medium, MI=29.6%), did not show significant differences between their capacities for establishing territorial dominance (mean aggressiveness score, LI=20.0+/-22; MI=16.7+/-23 or for feeding attempts, LI=18.3+/-12; MI=21.1+/-12). However, fish with low inbreeding (LI) showed almost twice the aggressive pursuit of fish with medium inbreeding (MI), and had a higher specific growth rate (SGR) in culture (SGR(MI)=1.83+/-0.58; SGR(LI)=2.20+/-0.67). Additionally, we found evidence that the magnitude of ID was modified by social environment: (1) Masking: In small groups of fish (N=20), large dominant fish of MI, cultivated with small subordinate fish of LI, showed the same SGR as dominant fish of LI cultivated with small subordinate fish of MI. (2) Magnifying: A significant effect of ID on juvenile survival was detected only in high-density competitive environments. Thus, the number of lethal equivalents was 2.70 at high-density, and only 0.24 in a low-density environment. Our results show that differences in size associated with territorial dominance may mask deleterious effects of inbreeding under certain conditions, and support the concept that intraspecific competition usually magnifies the deleterious effects of inbreeding.  相似文献

The porthole shovelnose catfish, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, is the sixth largest pimelodidae of the Pantanal. Its age and growth were studied using pectoral fin-spines from fish collected in the Cuiabá river basin, Pantanal. The fish, which came from commercial and experimental fisheries, were all caught with hook and line. Growth-ring formation time could not be defined through the Kruskal-Wallis test on marginal increment (H = 4.142; p = 0.247). Nevertheless, decrease in the marginal increment index occurring as waters recede suggests this as the probable time when growth rings form. Estimation of the parameters of von Bertalanffy growth curve, adjusted through nonlinear regression to observed fork lengths, with L(infinity) fixed at 64 cm, were: k = 0.222 year(-1); t(o) = -2.149 years. Individual life span was estimated at 11.4 years. The results suggest that fork length is a good predictor of age for individuals of this species.  相似文献

Wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were sampled from five lakes in each of two metal contamination gradients in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada (n = 1324) and Rouyn-Noranda, Québec, Canada (n = 1125) in the spring and summer of 2002 and 2003, respectively, in order to examine growth patterns, longevity, and the influences of season and region on fish condition. Fish from Rouyn-Noranda began rapid growth at a young age, whereas fish from Sudbury lakes showed slow growth rates between ages 0–3, after which growth rates improved. Fish from contaminated lakes grew faster and died younger than fish from reference lakes in both contamination gradients. Fish from Sudbury had lower condition than in Rouyn-Noranda, higher condition occurred in summer than spring, and fish from contaminated lakes had lower condition than those from cleaner lakes. Tissue Zn concentrations were correlated with fish condition and showed strong temporal stability. However, it is more likely that Zn covariates, such as Cd or Cu (which were more temporally variable) influenced condition, suggesting that long-term, broad-scale processes are more important than short-term, lake-specific processes for establishing growth patterns, longevity, and fish condition in metal-contaminated systems. Results from this study reveal that fish condition must be interpreted in the light of regional, seasonal, and other factors that can potentially influence fish growth patterns. Ecological risk assessments that fail to take these factors into account may draw erroneous conclusions about risk to indigenous populations.  相似文献

The biology of a Scottish population of the small bothid flatfish, Arnoglossus laterna , was studied from January 1975 until September 1976. The data were taken from monthly samples totalling over 500 fish trawled in 18–36 m on a soft mud bottom. Otoliths were used for age determination and a growth curve was constructed which showed that most growth occurs in the first 2–3 years of life. The maximum age recorded was 8+ years. The fish first mature sexually in their second year at a standard length of 6–7 cm and the short spawning season lasts from the late June to August. Fecundity is length-dependent and the relationship could be described by the regression equation: log fecundity = 3·3472 log standard length (mm) -2·1064. The diet consists mainly of decapod crustaceans (particularly crangonid shrimps), polychaetes, mysids and small fish.  相似文献

Growth parameters were estimated for Moenkhausia dichroura (Kner, 1858) (Characiformes, Characidae), a small-sized and very abundant fish of the Pantanal lentic habitats commonly known as "pequira ". A method based on the length frequencies distribution and the ELEFAN I routine from the FISAT program were used. The fish were collected in the Baia da On?a, an oxbowlake of the sub-region Pantanal of Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, from June to December 1988. The standard length of the captured fishes ranged from 29 to 76 mm with an average of 53 mm. The estimated growth parameters were L(infinity) = 81 mm (standard length), k = 0.85 year(-1), C = 0.89, WP = 0.6 (Rn = 0.285). The WP indicated that growth reduction occurred in July, when the lowest temperature of the year was registered. The growth curve showed that captured individuals belonged to three cohorts. The obtained results seem robust and quite compatible with the biology of the fish and its adjustment to the environment. M. dichroura, in spite of not being a direct fishing interest, is an important species in terms of its ecological aspects, due to its abundance and high growth rate, and as a great food source for aquatic organisms and specially for larger fish of economic value. Considering the information gap about small fish, the parameters estimated for pequira constitute a comparison base for other growth studies of small-sized fish species of tropical environments.  相似文献

Juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) are omnivorous, and the question asked in this study is how they affect on their environment? Do they mainly act as predators on the cladoceran zooplankton or do they compete with the cladocerans for phytoplankton? This problem was studied in three ponds with and three ponds without small tilapia (3–5 cm). The fish growth rate, the succession of plankton species and the changes in abiotic conditions, were monitored over a period of 67 days. The fish biomass was kept low and the mean was approximately constant (12.6 g m?2) during the experiment. Phosphate was added to avoid phytoplankton nutrient limitation. Although the diet of Nile tilapia contained both phytoplankton and zooplankton, the fish affected the ecosystem in a similar way as zooplanktivorous fish. The fish ponds got more phytoplankton due to increase of Chlorophyta. Effects on the other phytoplankton groups Euglenophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cryptophyta and Cyanophyta could not be registered. The ponds without fish had higher densities of Daphnia lumholtzi and D. barbata. The other Cladocerans seemed less influenced by fish presence. The relative fish growth rate was most positively correlated with the density of Daphnia lumholtzi, Diaphanosmoa excisum and Bosmina longirostris. Tilapia seemes to have two feeding modes: (1) preying on large zooplankton and (2) unselective filtration of small planktonic organisms such as phytoplankton. In our experiment the first feeding mode affected the ecosystem more than the second.  相似文献

When access to food is restricted, faster growing fish may be those whose behaviour is relatively unaffected by the presence of nearby conspecifics. Behavioural experiments were carried out to determine the relation between growth and motor activity levels in crowded and uncrowded conditions, and measures of aversion/attraction to groups of conspecifics. Two experimental groups of Or)-ius laripes (Temminck and Schlegel) were grown for several weeks in two environments manipulated so as to maximize differences in social interactions. In the high interaction environment (HI), food was provided inside a floating cork ring. In the low interaction environment (LI), food was spread over the container's surface. Fish were measured at the end of the growth period and tested for their activity levels in the presence of conspecifics and for their preference for, or tolerance of crowded conditions. The correlation between motor activity and growth was significantly more positive in the HI environment than in the LI environment. The relationship between preference for crowded conditions and growth was negative for both groups of fish, although less so for HI than for LI. We conclude that artificial selection for faster growth may produce more aggressive fish only under very high levels of forced social interaction (competition), if at all. Under conditions of reduced social interaction, the social-aversive or socially indifferent fish grow faster.  相似文献

Clarias gariepinus is a threatened highly prized species used for some elite ceremonies by the local communities. Artisanal fishers take advantage of this species annual breeding migration from the lower Cross River to the floodplain lakes in Mid-Cross River during the rainy season, and some migrant stocks are not able to spawn. Since there is a lack of information on this species population dynamics in the Mid-Cross area, this study aimed to evaluate the age, growth and mortality to support the development of effective management plans. For this, monthly overnight gill net catches (from 6 to 72mm mesh sizes) were developed between March 2005 and February 2007. Growth parameters were determined using the FiSAT II length-frequency distribution. A total of 1 421 fish were collected during the survey. The asymptotic growth (L(infinity)) was 80.24cm, growth rate (K) was 0.49/year while the longevity was 6.12 years. The annual instantaneous rate of total mortality (Z) was 2.54/year and the natural mortality (M) was 0.88. Fishing mortality (1.66/year) was higher than the biological reference points (F(opt) = 0.83 and F(limit) = 1.11) and the exploitation rate (0.66) was higher than the predicted value (E(max) = 0.64) indicating that C. gariepinus was over exploited in the Mid-Cross River-Floodplain ecosystem. Some recommended immediate management actions are to strengthen the ban of ichthyocide fishing, closure of the floodplain lakes for most of the year, restricted access to the migratory path of the fish during the flood period and vocational training to the fishers. In order to recover and maintain a sustainable harvest, I suggest that a multi-sector stakeholder group should be formed with governmental agents, community leaders, fishers, fisheries scientists and non-governmental organizations. These short and long term measures, if carefully applied, will facilitate recovery of the fishery.  相似文献

The biology and fisheries of Tilapia mariae, the only tilapiine cichlid fish in the Iba Oku (Uyo, Nigeria) wetland stream was studied. There were more females than males in the population. The smallest sexually mature female fish was 11.0 cm total length (TL) while the size at 50% maturity was 17.1 cm TL. Absolute fecundity (Fe) ranged from 953 to 3200 eggs and was positively correlated with TL. The fish bred year‐round with peaks in November, March–April and July–September. The seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) was fitted to the 12 consecutive months length–frequency data (n = 2439) to obtain a VBGF with the following parameters: L∞ (asymptotic length) = 30.4 cm TL, K (growth coefficient) = 0.4 year?1, C (amplitude of growth oscillation) =0.4, and WP (winter point) = 0.9. The seasonalized length‐converted catch curve method gave Z (instantaneous total mortality coefficient) as 1.75 year?1, M (instantaneous natural mortality coefficient) was 0.99 year?1 while F (instantaneous fishing mortality coefficient) was 0.76 year?1 and E (=F/Z the current exploitation rate) was 0.43. Length at first capture (Lc) was 17.7 cm TL. The fish was recruited to the fishery year‐round with two pulses. From the Beverton and Holt relative yield per recruit analysis via the selection ogive procedure, Emax (predicted maximum exploitation rate) was 0.54. The stock was not overexploited, since E < Emax. This study also showed that the fish is an r‐selected species with a few K‐selected traits.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of mosquito fish to various salt concentrations. Mosquito fish, Gambusia affinis , (total length (T.L.) 27–37 mm) were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water to various salinities (S). Low mortality (10%) occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water (S = 0·5‰) to 50% sea water (S = 19·5‰ Through gradual adaptation 65·0% of the fish were able to tolerate 100% sea water for 7 days. After a 7 -day stay in sea water, fish were readapted to fresh water during a 3-h period. The results indicate that they were well able to tolerate the abrupt change. Through a gradual adaptation fish were also able to tolerate salinities ranging from 39·0‰ (100% sea water) to 58·8‰  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology, growth and age composition ofOreochromis mossambicus (Peters) were studied in two Brisbane reservoirs during 1981–1983. The life history was assessed in terms of altricial and precocial tendencies after Noakes & Balon (1982). Fish from both reservoirs had a precocial life history style, showing delayed maturation at 12–15 months, at minimum sizes of 152 mm standard length in males and 174 mm standard length in females. The minimum size of fish at maturity was 0.51–0.73 of maximum size. Mean fecundity was 1360 (± 117.2 standard error) in North Pine Dam and 2107 (220.4 standard error) in Tingalpa Reservoir. This difference was significant (p<0.01). Oöcyte diameter ranged from 1.7–2.6 mm. Overall sex ratio was 1:1 but males predominated amongst fish larger than 200 mm standard length. Stocks consisted mainly of three age groups and the oldest fish caught were 3+ years old. Growth rates were high in both populations. Length-weight relationships conformed to the allometric formula W = aLn and were consistent with data on growth rates. High growth rates are attributed to the high productivity of both reservoirs and the small size of the populations relative to food resources, which are not utilized directly by other fishes. These factors probably also account for the precocial life history style exhibited, compared to the altricial life history style ofO. mossambicus in Lake Sibaya, South Africa, a food-restricted environment.  相似文献

Four natural ingredient diets similar in nutrient composition (crude protein = 42–44%; P/E ratio = 115–120 mg/kcal) but different in protein sources, were formulated and fed to hatchery-reared catfish to measure the relative performance of the catfish fed alternative broodstock diets. The control feed was a combination of fish-by-catch and commercial fish pellets. In trial I, growth of the catfish was slow over a 36-week period, but some fish became gravid. Diets 1, 2, and 3 and the control feed were tested in trial II. Growth of fish did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) and female fish in all treatments became gravid. For fish induced to spawn from April to August (1994), hatching rate showed significant differences among treatments (P < 0.05). Relative fecundity, fertilization and hatching rates, and production of 3-day-old larvae were significantly different among fish induced to spawn in November (1994) when another incubation setup was used. Among the diets, diets 2 and 3 best enhanced reproductive performance of the catfish.  相似文献

A sample of 198 asp (Aspius aspius) was collected over a 28.5 km long section of the Danube River, upstream and downstream from the mouth of the Sava River, in order to provide information on population structure, diet, growth, and condition of this species. Total body lengths of sampled fish were 90–405 mm, and body weights 5–567 g. The sample was predominantly sub‐adult fish aged 0+ to 4+ years. Sexually immature asp prevailed over the sexually mature asp. The sex ratio (1.4 : 1) was biased toward males. Male asps in the Danube become sexually mature only in their fifth year of life, and the females even later, as no sexually mature females were caught. The diet spectrum consists exclusively of fishes; of seven determined prey species, most important are bleak Alburnus alburnus, roach Rutilus rutilus, and goldfish Carassius auratus. Highest value of the seasonal vacuity index is in November (Iv = 94.1), and the smallest in July (Iv = 35.6). Trophic niche breadth is largest in May (H = 1.40), and smallest in November (H = 0.00). The largest average number of prey items is found in age class 4+ (2.33), the smallest in age class 0+ (1.00). Von Bertalanffy growth parameters are L = 526.46, K = 0.28, and t0 = 0.22. The length–weight relationship is described as log W = ?5.16 + 3.03 log L. Fulton’s condition factor increases with fish length, from 0.70 to 0.83. Regarding seasonal fluctuations, this factor begins to increase in late spring, with the trend continuing until autumn, and then decreasing from autumn to spring.  相似文献

Age and growth of Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda Bloch, 1793) were determined in the Black Sea and Sea of Marmara from October 2003 to May 2005. A total of 694 samples ranging from 23.5 to 71 cm total length was collected; age estimates were carried out on otoliths of 248 fish. Male and female fish ages were estimated as up to 3+. The length–weight relationship and the von Bertalanffy growth curve (TVBGF) were described for all individuals as: W = 0.0054L3.215 and Lt = 68.01 [1 ? e?0.895 (t + 0.395)]. These data are discussed in relation to other growth studies of S. Sarda in the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献
