The antennae of Arenivaga have six types of chemoreceptor sensilla. Some of these have unusual morphological features which may be adaptations for survival in a dry habitat. The sensory dendrites are well protected by cuticular structures, and in some receptors stimulatory molecules must pass through long channels or through pores filled with strands to reach the sensory cells. Large grooved pegs (possibly pheromone receptors) are numerous on antennae of adult males, and grooved sensilla are described here in detail for the first time. Thin-walled pegs, present in males and females, do not have pore tubules or hollow filaments as observed in many other insects. Rather, they contain structures designated here as pore strands, since they have a dense core rather than a light center as previously described for pore tubules and filaments. These strands do not appear to be evaginations of the dendritec membrane, but are probably formed in association with the cuticular structures of the sensilla.  相似文献

Most mitotic mutants in Drosophila do not lead to lethality in early development despite the highly abnormal chromosome behaviour that they elicit. This has been explained as being the effect of maternally provided wild-type products. We have tested this hypothesis by studying cuticular clones derived from cells in which there has been loss of a marked Y chromosome due to chromosome nondisjunction in individuals homozygous for the mutation abnormal spindle who are progeny of heterozygous mothers. We have found that the size and frequency of these clones are higher than in control flies. Furthermore, by analysing flies whose female parents have different doses of the asp+ gene, we have found that there is a correlation between the amount of maternally contributed asp+ product and the frequency and size of cuticular clones. We have also estimated the time in development when the first mitotic mistakes take place, i.e. the time when maternal products are no longer sufficient to carry out normal cell division.  相似文献

Cuticular lipid compositions of all life stages of the stored product moth Plodia interpunctella have been determined. Eggs and adults of P. interpunctella have cuticular lipids consisting solely of hydrocarbons. The composition of eggs and adult females is qualitatively nearly identical with ca. 86 hydrocarbons (11 n-alkanes, 39 monomethyl alkanes, 19 dimethyl alkanes, 11 trimethyl alkanes and 6 monoenes) except females lack the 2-methyl alkanes found in eggs. Adult males have a hydrocarbon composition qualitatively nearly identical to females with the exception that they lack the monoenes. Larval and pupal cuticular lipids are dominated by a mixture of ca. 20 previously described 2-acyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones, with only minute amounts of n-alkanes on the larvae and pupae. The 2-acyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones are continuously secreted onto their silk webbing and food particles by the paired mandibular glands found in all larvae. Extracts from dissected mandibular glands have a qualitatively identical composition to larval cuticular extracts. The pupal stage (which does not have mandibular glands) is enclosed in a silk cocoon also coated with 2-acyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones laid down while the wandering stage larvae spin the cocoon. The 2-acyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones have physical properties which closely mimic those of cuticular hydrocarbons, including melting point and boiling point range and hydrophobicity. This is the first report of an insect with a life stage that does not use conventional cuticular lipids for conservation of water.  相似文献

Tardigrades are generally gonochoristic. Many moss-dwelling species propagate by parthenogenesis, but heterogony has not yet been found. Milnesium tardigradum, a carnivorous tardigrade, also has both sexes, but males are usually rare and many populations appear to have only parthenogenetic reproduction. Since 2000, I have maintained a thelytokous strain of Milnesium cf. tardigradum that originated from one female. Individuals of this strain were thought to be all females, but here I report that males have emerged in this strain at a very low frequency. This is the first report of the appearance of males in parthenogenetic tardigrades. On the first pair of legs of some individuals, I observed the modified claws characteristic of males of this species. It is unknown whether these males can actually function in sexual reproduction; however, they might allow some possibility of genetic exchange among clonal populations. No environmental factors that generate males were determined.  相似文献

The ability to recognize individuals is an important aspect of social interactions, but it can also be useful to avoid repeated matings with the same individual. The Coolidge effect is the progressive decline in a male's propensity to mate with the same female combined with a heightened sexual interest in new females. Although males that recognize previous partners and show a preference for novel females should have a selective advantage as they can distribute sperm evenly among the females they encounter, there are few invertebrate examples of the Coolidge effect. Here we present evidence for this effect in the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides and examine the mechanism underlying the discrimination between familiar and novel mates. Burying beetles feed and reproduce on vertebrate carcasses, where they regularly encounter conspecifics. Males showed greater sexual interest in novel females (virgin or mated) than in females they had inseminated before. The application of identical cuticular extracts allowed us to experimentally create females with similar odours, and male responses to such females demonstrated that they use female cuticular patterns for discrimination. The chemical analysis of the cuticular profile revealed greater inter-individual variation in female than in male cuticular patterns, which might be due to greater selection on females to signal their individual identity.  相似文献

Some models of sexual selection predict that individuals vary in their genetic quality and reveal some of this variation in their secondary sexual characteristics. Alpine whitefish (Coregonus sp.) develop breeding tubercles shortly before their spawning season. These tubercles are epidermal structures that are distributed regularly along the body sides of both males and females. There is still much unexplained variation in the size of breeding tubercles within both sexes and with much overlap between the sexes. It has been suggested that breeding tubercles function to maintain body contact between the mating partners during spawning, act as weapons for defence of spawning territories, or are sexual signals that reveal aspects of genetic quality. We took two samples of whitefish from their spawning place, one at the beginning and one around the peak of spawning season. We found that females have on average smaller breeding tubercles than males, and that tubercle size partly reveals the stage of gonad maturation. Two independent full-factorial breeding experiments revealed that embryo mortality was significantly influenced by male and female effects. This finding demonstrates that the males differed in their genetic quality (because offspring get nothing but genes from their fathers). Tubercle size was negatively linked to some aspects of embryo mortality in the first breeding experiment but not significantly so in the second. This lack of consistency adds to inconsistent results that were reported before and suggests that (i) some aspects of genetic quality are not revealed in breeding tubercles while others are, or (ii) individuals vary in their signaling strategies and the information content of breeding tubercles is not always reliable. Moreover, the fact that female whitefish have breeding tubercles of significant size while males seem to have few reasons to be choosy suggests that the tubercles might also serve some functions that are not linked to sexual signaling.  相似文献

The cuticle of C. elegans is a highly resistant structure that surrounds the exterior of the animal(1-4). The cuticle not only protects the animal from the environment, but also determines body shape and plays a role in motility(4-6). Several layers secreted by epidermal cells comprise the cuticle, including an outermost lipid layer(7). Circumferential ridges in the cuticle called annuli pattern the length of the animal and are present during all stages of development(8). Alae are longitudinal ridges that are present during specific stages of development, including L1, dauer, and adult stages(2,9). Mutations in genes that affect cuticular collagen organization can alter cuticular structure and animal body morphology(5,6,10,11). While cuticular imaging using compound microscopy with DIC optics is possible, current methods that highlight cuticular structures include fluorescent transgene expression(12), antibody staining(13), and electron microscopy(1). Labeled wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) has also been used to visualize cuticular glycoproteins, but is limited in resolving finer cuticular structures(14). Staining of cuticular surface using fluorescent dye has been observed, but never characterized in detail(15). We present a method to visualize cuticle in live C. elegans using the red fluorescent lipophilic dye DiI (1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate), which is commonly used in C. elegans to visualize environmentally exposed neurons. This optimized protocol for DiI staining is a simple, robust method for high resolution fluorescent visualization of annuli, alae, vulva, male tail, and hermaphrodite tail spike in C. elegans.  相似文献

The males of many species of New World Phlebotomines produce volatile terpenoid chemicals, shown in Lutzomyia longipalpis s.l. to be sex/aggregation pheromones. Pheromone is produced by secretory cells which surround a cuticular reservoir which collects the pheromone and passes it through a cuticular duct to the surface of the insect. The pheromone then passes through specialised cuticular structures on the abdominal surface prior to evaporation. The shape and distribution of the specialised structures are highly diverse and differ according to species. In this study we used SEM to examine the interior cuticular pheromone collection and transport structures of 3 members of the Lu. longipalpis s.l. species complex and Migonemyia migonei. We found a new structure which we have called the manifold which appears to be a substantial extension of the interior tergal cuticle connected in-line with the cuticular duct and reservoir. The manifold of the Campo Grande member of the complex is longer and wider than the Jacobina member whereas the manifold of the Sobral member was shorter than both other members of the complex. Overall, the secretory apparatus of the Sobral member was smaller than the other two. The manifold of M. migonei was very different to those found in Lu. longipalpis s.l. and was positioned in a pit-like structure within the tergal cuticle. The secretory reservoir was connected by a short duct to the manifold. Differences in the size and shape of the manifold may be related to the chemical structure of the pheromone and may have taxonomic value. Examination of the interior cuticle by SEM may help to locate the secretory apparatus of vector species where pheromonal activity has been inferred from behavioural studies but the external secretory structures or pheromones have not yet been found.  相似文献

Males, queens and workers of stingless bees show differences in external morphology, behaviour and roles within a colony. In addition, each individual has a cuticular chemical signature responsible for mutual communication that is essential for maintaining the integrity of the colony. In this paper we characterize the cuticular hydrocarbon composition of newly emerged diploid and haploid males, workers and virgin queens of Melipona quadrifasciata by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. This is the first time that the cuticular profile of diploid males in a species of stingless bee has been characterized. We found differences in the cuticular hydrocarbon composition among males, workers and virgin queens, recording both qualitative and quantitative differences among individuals of different phenotypes. However, no compound was found exclusively in diploid males. The cuticular chemical profiles of haploid and diploid males were very similar to those of workers. Moreover, the cuticular lipids of males and workers were significantly different from those of queens. Tricosane, pentacosene-2 and 7-methyl-heptacosane were the compounds responsible for this significant separation. This result correlates with the behavioural and morphological differences among these phenotypes.  相似文献

When individuals receive different returns from their reproductive investment dependent on mate quality, they are expected to invest more when breeding with higher quality mates. A number of studies over the past decade have shown that females may alter their reproductive effort depending on the quality/attractiveness of their mate. However, to date, despite extensive work on parental investment, such a differential allocation has not been demonstrated in fish. Indeed, so far only two studies from any taxon have suggested that females alter the quality of individual offspring according to the quality/attractiveness of their mate. The banggai cardinal fish is an obligate paternal mouth brooder where females lay few large eggs. It has previously been shown that male size determines clutch weight irrespective of female size in this species. In this study, I investigated whether females perform more courtship displays towards larger males and whether females allocate their reproductive effort depending on the size of their mate by experimentally assigning females to either large or small males. I found that females displayed more towards larger males, thereby suggesting a female preference for larger males. Further, females produced heavier eggs and heavier clutches but not more eggs when paired with large males. My experiments show that females in this species adjust their offspring weight and, thus, presumably offspring quality according to the size of their mate.  相似文献

Summary InB. terrestris diploid males develop normally into adults (Duchateau et al., 1994). The diploid males are similar in appearance to the haploid males, except that they are smaller. The size of the testis of diploid males, relative to the length of the radial cell, is smaller than that of haploid males. There is overlap in the frequency distribution with respect to body size and testis size. The spermatozoa of diploid males are larger than those of the haploids and the vasa deferentia contain fair less spermatozoa than those of haploid males of the same age. Countings and measurements of the spermatozoa, therefore, can give the best indication about the ploidy of the males. Diploid males are successful in mating. They mate at a younger age than haploid males and they die sooner. The number of vial offspring of diploid males, however, is very low. No queen that mated with a diploid male produced a colony, but a few queens did produce some progeny. These might have been triploid males and workers. InB. terrestris higher ploidy results in smaller individuals, whereas in several other species of the Hymenoptera it has been found to result in larger individuals.  相似文献

Sexual differences in the foraging behaviour of parents have been observed in a number of sexually sizedimorphic birds, particularly seabirds, and the usual inference has been that these sex-specific differences are mediated primarily by differences in body size. To test this explanation, we compared the foraging behaviour of parents in a monomorphic seabird species, the northern gannet Morus bassanus. Using specially designed instruments and radio telemetry we found that individuals of both sexes were consistent in the directions and durations of their foraging trips. However, there were significant differences in the foraging behaviour of males and females. Female gannets were not only more selective than males in the areas where they foraged, but they also made longer, deeper dives and spent more time on the sea surface than males. As the sexes are morphologically similar in this species, then these differences are unlikely to have been mediated by body size. Our work highlights the need to investigate sexual differences in the foraging behaviour of seabirds and other species more closely, in order to test alternative theories that do not rely on differences in body size.  相似文献

Envipnmental cues,mainly photoperiod and temperature,are known to control female adult reproductive diapause in several insect species.Diapause enhances female survival during adverse conditions and postpones progeny production to the favorable season.Male diapause(a reversible inability to inseminate receptive females)has been studied much less than female diapause.However,if the males maximized their chances to fertilize females while minimizing their energy expenditure,they would be expected to be in diapause at the same time as females.We investigated Drosophila montana male mating bchavior under short-day conditions that induce diapause in females and found the males to be reproductively inactive.We also found that males reared under long-day conditions(reproducing individuals)court reproducing postdiapause fermales,but not diapausing ones.The diapausing fies of both sexes had more long-chain and less short-chain hydrocarbons on their cuticle than the reproducing ones,which presumably increase their survival under stressful conditions,but at the same time decrease their attractiveness.Our study shows that the mating behavior of females and males is well coordinated during and afier overwintering and it also gives support to the dual role of insect cuticular hydrocarbons in adaptation and mate choice.  相似文献

Introduced populations of the small Indian mongooseHerpestes javanicus (Geoffroy St. Hilaire, 1818), in Hawaii have been shown to include male breeding coalitions. Young individuals of this species stay with their mothers until they reach adult size, suggesting that young males are not exposed to the full pressure of intrasexual competition until they have completed skeletal development. It was hypothesized that variance of male skeletal characteristics should therefore be similar to the variance seen in females. It has been observed that adult males with small body mass are not typically members of breeding coalitions, suggesting that body mass is a key factor in male intraspecific competition. It was thus hypothesized that variance in male mass should exceed that in female mass. These hypotheses were tested by direct measurement of live animals in the field and by measurement of museum specimens. Both hypotheses were strongly supported. A significant correlation was also found between male body length and variance in male mass, but no correlation was found among females. It is suggested that males with low body length, like females, maintain only as much mass as is physiologically required, whereas long males maximize their mass with varying degrees of success, to facilitate intrasexual competition.  相似文献

The pheromone-detecting sensilla placodea are significantly more numerous than other sensory structures in the antennae of the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Their abundance in males is nearly twice of that in females, showing a clear sexual dimorphism. Externally, they have a tortoise shell-like round cuticular plate containing a few polygonal plates separated by narrow ridges. Internally, they house two long dendrites that branch and terminate near fine cuticular pores. They have a system of two bipolar neurons accompanied by three enveloping cells, resembling sensilla trichodea in moths. The conspicuous difference with the latter is that the sensillum-lymph cavity near the outer cuticle is funnel-shaped, into which the tormogen cell projects numerous microvilli whose tips approach the terminal branches of the dendrites.  相似文献

Musculoskeletal markers are frequently used to reconstruct past lifestyles and activity patterns. Yet the reliability of muscle marker measurements has been called into question because they may be confounded by body size. In this study, an aggregate muscle marker variable was calculated using 20 insertion sites (14 femoral, 6 tibial), and I examined their effects on lower limb size (as a proxy for body size), age, and sex. Analyses were made of a sample of 77 (57 males, 20 females) Native British Columbians (3,500-1,500 years BP) and 18th century Quebec prisoners. Muscle markers were measured using two-point observer rating scales; size was measured by standard methods; and age and sex were determined through pelvic, cranial, and dental morphology. Lower limb muscle markers correlated with: age, r=0.61; lower limb size, r=0.52; and sex, r=0.49; P <0.001. Older individuals had higher muscle marker scores, as did larger individuals and males. Based on partial correlations and regression analyses, age was the best overall predictor of lower limb muscle markers.  相似文献

Humans are inherently fascinated by exaggerated morphological structures such as elk antlers and peacock trains. Because these traits are costly to develop and wield, the environment in which they are used can select for specific sizes or shapes to minimize such costs. In aquatic environments, selection to reduce drag can constrain the form of exaggerated structures; this is presumably why exaggerated morphologies are less common in aquatic environments compared to terrestrial ones. Interestingly, some crayfish species possess claws with an exaggerated gape between their pinching fingers, but the function of this claw gape is unknown. Here, I describe and test the function of the exaggerated claw gape of the New River crayfish, Cambarus chasmodactylus. Specifically, I test the hypothesis that the claw gape aids in movement against flowing currents. I found that both claw size and gape size were sexually dimorphic in this species and that males have disproportionately larger gapes compared to females. By experimentally covering their claw gape and testing crayfish locomotor performance, I found that individuals with their gape blocked were 30% slower than crayfish with a natural gape. My results highlight a unique adaptation that compensates for wielding an exaggerated structure in aquatic environments.  相似文献

It has been suggested that mating behaviours require high levels of cognitive ability. However, since investment into mating and the brain both are costly features, their relationship is likely characterized by energetic trade-offs. Empirical data on the subject remains equivocal. We investigated if early sexual maturation was associated with brain development in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), in which males can either stay in the river and sexually mature at a small size (sneaker males) or migrate to the sea and delay sexual maturation until they have grown much larger (anadromous males). Specifically, we tested how sexual maturation may induce plastic changes in brain development by rearing juveniles on either natural or ad libitum feeding levels. After their first season we compared brain size and brain region volumes across both types of male mating tactics and females. Body growth increased greatly across both male mating tactics and females during ad libitum feeding as compared to natural feeding levels. However, despite similar relative increases in body size, early maturing sneaker males maintained larger relative brain size during ad libitum feeding levels as compared to anadromous males and females. We also detected several differences in the relative size of separate brain regions across feeding treatments, sexes and mating strategies. For instance, the relative size of the cognitive centre of the brain, the telencephalon, was largest in sneaker males. Our data support that a large relative brain size is maintained in individuals that start reproduction early also during fast body growth. We propose that the cognitive demands during complex mating behaviours maintain a high level of investment into brain development in reproducing individuals.  相似文献

Platypus koryoensis (Murayama) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Platypodinae) is a minute ambrosia beetle that can cause significant damage to live oak trees (Quercus mongolica) along with its symbiotic pathogenic fungus (Raffaelea sp.). Although both sexes of the beetle have a number of cuticular depressions for carrying microorganisms, only the females have mycangia that are typical in size on the pronotum. The mycangial cavities are filled with a mass of amorphous substances including yeast-like spores. In addition, mycangial cavities are equipped with cuticular pores which release substances to support symbiotic microorganisms during storage. Small depressions of both sexes can be subdivided into two clusters according to their relative sizes and locations. Although they have a typical cuticular peg (basiconic sensillum), they also share a common morphological characteristic with the typical mycangium of female: a round outlet and an invaginated reservoir containing a mass of secretory substances. Accordingly, our fine structural data suggest that both the female mycangia and the clusters of small cuticular depressions in both sexes also have a mycangial function in common regardless of their relative size and location.  相似文献
