The rapid growth of tissue banking and associated international organisations following the fall of the Berlin wall in 1991 is described. This surge in collaboration led to a world-wide constructive movement to use and to produce human tissues. As the years progressed industrialisation, led by the USA, improved the quality of tissue allografts but led higher costs and consolidation within the developing industry. The growth of litigation more than kept pace with the industrial progress. One landmark case is described, the outcome of which could revolutionise the current practices now applied to eliminate possible viral contamination of implanted tissue grafts.  相似文献

The Sapio Award was established in 1999 by the Sapio Group along with several Italian universities and research centers to recognize Italian scientists who have made a major contribution to the discovery or development of novel technologies in the fields of biotechnology, social and health services, nonotechnology and biosecurity in agricultural production and scientific distribution. The 2006 edition of the award meeting centered around the issues of tissue banks and biorepositories and translational medicine. The organizing committee divided this edition into a pre-meeting held in Milan on October 18, 2006 and a master meeting on October 19, 2006, held at the ISS in Rome. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) played an important role in the establishment of new tissue banks and the improvement of already existing ones in Latin America. The Agency strongly supported, through regional, interregional and national technical cooperation projects, providing equipment, expert missions and training for the production and application of human tissues for transplantation. From 1999 to 2005 five regional courses were given in Buenos Aires under the modality of 1-year distance learning training courses and 1-week face to face courses. The courses were organized by the IAEA, through the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) and the Faculty of Medicine of Buenos Aires University as Post Graduate Specialization Course. In 2005 the Latin American countries joined with Spain and Portugal, and created the Ibero American Network Council of Donation and Transplant (Red Consejo Iberoamericano de Donación y Trasplantes—RCIDT). The objective of this network is to cooperate among twenty-one Ibero American countries in organizational and legislative aspects, training of professionals, and ethical and social issues related to the donation and transplantation of organs, tissues and cells. The members of this Network work actively to harmonize the regulations and the control of donation and transplantation of human organs, tissues and cells. At present, in Latin America, more than 220 facilities of tissues banks are operating and tissue allografts are being produced by single and multi-tissue banks. The efforts made by the governments and professionals from the region allow the tissue banks to operate under quality systems and introduce new technologies.  相似文献

A tissue bank is accountable before the community in fulfilling the expectations of tissue donors, their families and recipients. The expected output from the altruistic donation is that safe and high quality human tissue grafts will be provided for the medical treatment of patients. Thus, undertakings of tissue banks have to be not only authorised and audited by national competent health care authorities, but also comply with a strong ethical code, a code of practices and ethical principles. Ethical practice in the field of tissue banking requires the setting of principles, the identification of possible deviations and the establishment of mechanisms that will detect and hinder abuses that may occur during the procurement, processing and distribution of human tissues for transplantation. The opinions and suggestions manifested by the authors in this paper may not be necessarily a reflection of those within the institutions or community they are linked to.  相似文献

This paper quantifies and analyses the water footprint of Tunisia at national and sub-national level, assessing green, blue and grey water footprints for the period 1996–2005. It also assesses economic water and land productivities related to crop production for irrigated and rain-fed agriculture, and water scarcity. The water footprint of crop production gave the largest contribution (87%) to the total national water footprint. At national level, tomatoes and potatoes were the main crops with relatively high economic water productivity, while olives and barley were the main crops with relatively low productivity. In terms of economic land productivity, oranges had the highest productivity and barley the lowest. South Tunisia had the lowest economic water and land productivities. Economic land productivity was found to explain more of the current production patterns than economic water productivity, which may imply opportunities for water saving. The total blue water footprint of crop production represented 31% of the total renewable blue water resources, which means that Tunisia as a whole experienced significant water scarcity. The blue water footprint on groundwater represented 62% of the total renewable groundwater resources, which means that the country faced severe water scarcity related to groundwater.  相似文献

Enrolment in external quality assurance programs is part of the accreditation process for medical laboratories in Australia, with the majority of Australian laboratories being enrolled in programs from RCPA Quality Assurance Programs Pty Limited, a company owned by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. An important feature of these programs is that they have been developed with the involvement and contribution of the profession. For example, the Chemical Pathology programs are a joint venture between the company and the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists (AACB). Some of the unique features of the programs are the composition of the material, the use of target values, the structure and information in the reports and the use of the internet for data entry and data review. Over the past thirty years, the development of these programs has made a significant contribution to the quality of laboratories in Australia.  相似文献

Probiotic products have gained popularity with consumers that expect that the products they consume are healthy and help them maintain health. Hence, the need and preferences of the consumers are translated into a product format concept. Probiotics have been used for a long time as natural components in supplements and functional foods, mainly in fermented dairy products. Most of the strains used as probiotics belong to the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. By definition, a strain has to have documented health benefits, in order to be called a probiotic. Although each bacterial strain is unique, there are some points that are essential when selecting a probiotic regarding the genetic stability, survival, and technical properties of a strain. Proper components, food matrices and production processes need to be selected since the matrices may affect the viability of the strain in the product and the intestine. Survival in the product is considered a requirement for the beneficial effects of probiotics.  相似文献

The genetic transformation of non-drosophilid insects is now possible with several systems, with germ-line transformation reported in published and unpublished accounts for about 12 species using four different transposon vectors. For some of these species, transformation can now be considered routine. Other vector systems include viruses and bacterial symbionts that have demonstrated utility in species and applications requiring transient expression, and for some, the potential exists for genomic integration. Many of these findings are quite recent, presenting a dramatic turning point in our ability to study and manipulate agriculturally and medically important insects. This review discusses these findings from the perspective of all the contributions that has made this technology a reality, the research that has yet to be done for its safe and efficient use in a broader range of species, and an overview of the available methodology to effectively utilize these systems.  相似文献

This review provides a synopsis of apogamous reproduction in ferns and highlights important progress made in recent studies of fern apomixis. First, a summary of the apomictic fern life cycle is provided, distinguishing between two pathways to diploid spore production that have been documented in apomictic ferns (premeiotic endomitosis and meiotic first division restitution) and briefly discussing the evolutionary implications of each. Next, recent trends in fern apomixis research are discussed, exposing a shift in focus from the observation and characterization of apomixis in ferns to more integrated studies of the evolutionary and ecological implications of this reproductive mode. Peer-reviewed contributions from the past decade are then summarized, spanning the identification of new apomictic lineages through to the developmental, phylogenetic, and population genetic insights that have been made in studies of fern apomixis during that time. Gaps in our understanding are also discussed, including the extent and implications of recombinant apomixis in ferns, the possible reversibility of reproductive mode (from apomictic to sexual) in ferns, and the genomic causes and consequences of apomixis in seed free vascular plants. To conclude, future directions for fern apomixis research are proposed in the context of modern technological advances and recent insights from studies of apomixis in other groups.  相似文献

Obesity is an escalating threat of pandemic proportions and has risen to such unrivaled prominence in such a short period of time that it has come to define a whole generation in many countries around the globe. The burden of obesity, however, is not equally shared among the population, with certain ethnicities being more prone to obesity than others, while some appear to be resistant to obesity altogether. The reasons behind this ethnic basis for obesity resistance and susceptibility, however, have remained largely elusive. In recent years, much evidence has shown that the level of brown adipose tissue thermogenesis, which augments energy expenditure and is negatively associated with obesity in both rodents and humans, varies greatly between ethnicities. Interestingly, the incidence of low birth weight, which is associated with an increased propensity for obesity and cardiovascular disease in later life, has also been shown to vary by ethnic background. This review serves to reconcile ethnic variations in BAT development and function with ethnic differences in birth weight outcomes to argue that the variation in obesity susceptibility between ethnic groups may have its origins in the in utero programming of BAT development and function as a result of evolutionary adaptation to cold environments.  相似文献

In recent years there has been an increasing number of papers showing how parasitism and pollution can interact with each other in aquatic organisms. Apart from parasitological aspects these interactions are also important in terms of ecotoxicological research. The current presentation aims at identifying three promising directions for future research in the interdisciplinary field of parasitology and ecotoxicology. 1. Parasites as sinks for pollutants within their hosts: Some parasites are able to reduce pollutant levels in the tissues of their host. The reduction of pollutants is an interesting implication since parasites are beneficial to their hosts from this perspective. In other cases free-living accumulation indicators may erroneously indicate low levels of pollution if they are infected with parasites. 2. Parasites as a diagnostic tool to test bioavailability of substances. In order to take up and accumulate pollutants the substances have to be metabolized by the host first. Accordingly, the detection of substances within endoparasites is a sign for the biological availability of pollutants. 3. Changes of biomarker responses of the host against pollutants. Parasites can alter physiological reactions of their hosts against pollutants in different ways. Therefore, in ecotoxicological studies, examining the question whether exposure to certain chemicals affects the physiological homeostasis of a test organism, it is important to use organisms that are known to be uninfected.  相似文献

The framework provided by Claude Shannon's [Bell Syst. Technol. J. 27 (1948) 623] theory of information leads to a quantitatively oriented reconceptualization of the processes that mediate conditioning. The focus shifts from processes set in motion by individual events to processes sensitive to the information carried by the flow of events. The conception of what properties of the conditioned and unconditioned stimuli are important shifts from the tangible properties to the intangible properties of number, duration, frequency and contingency. In this view, a stimulus becomes a CS if its onset substantially reduces the subject's uncertainty about the time of occurrence of the next US. One way to represent the subject's knowledge of that time of occurrence is by the cumulative probability function, which has two limiting forms: (1) The state of maximal uncertainty (minimal knowledge) is represented by the inverse exponential function for the random rate condition, in which the US is equally likely at any moment. (2) The limit to the subject's attainable certainty is represented by the cumulative normal function, whose momentary expectation is the CS-US latency minus the time elapsed since CS onset. Some basic effects of population genetics are derived governing the occurrences of alleles A(i)and genotypes A(i)A(j)among its members. A principle of extreme physical information (EPI) is used. These effects are (1) the equation of genetic change, (2) Fisher's theorem of partial change, (3) a new uncertainty principle, and (4) the monotonic decrease of Fisher information with time, indicating increased disorder for the population. General conditions of population change are allowed: fitness coefficients w(ij)generally changing with time [except in effect (2)], population randomly or non-randomly mating, and a general number of loci present within each chromosome. EPI is a practical tool for deriving probability laws. It is an outgrowth of a physical process that occurs during any act of measurement. Here the measurement is the random observation of a genotype A(i)A(j). This observation is to be used to estimate the time of the observation, called "evolutionary time". The measurement activity incurs errors in the estimated observation time and fitness value of the observed genotype. By the Cramer-Rao inequality, the product of the two uncertainties must exceed unity [effect (3)]. The Fisher information I in data space is postulated to originate in the space of the genotype where it had some generally larger value J. The EPI principle extremizes the loss of information (I--J) with I=1/2 J. The solution gives rise to effects (1) and (2). Finally, it is shown that effect (4) holds when the population approaches an equilibrium state, e.g. for time values greater than a threshold if fitness coefficients w(ij)are constant. EPI provides a common framework for deriving physical laws and laws of population genetics. The new effects (3) and (4) are confirmed through computer simulation.  相似文献
