We investigated worker policing by egg eating in the ponerine ant Pachycondyla inversa, a species with morphologically distinct queens and workers. Colonies were split into one half with the queen and one half without. Workers in queenless colony fragments started laying unfertilized male eggs after three weeks. Worker-laid eggs and queen-laid eggs were introduced into five other queenright colonies with a single queen and three colonies with multiple queens, and their fate was observed for 30 min. Significantly more worker-laid eggs (range of 35-62%, mean of 46%) than queen-laid eggs (range of 5-31%, mean of 15%) were eaten by workers in single-queen colonies, and the same trend was seen in multiple-queen colonies. This seems to be the first well-documented study of ants with a distinct caste polymorphism to show that workers kill worker-laid eggs in preference to queen-laid eggs. Chemical analyses showed that the surfaces of queen-laid and worker-laid eggs have different chemical profiles as a result of different relative proportions of several hydrocarbons. Such differences might provide the information necessary for differential treatment of eggs. One particular alkane, 3,11-dimeC27, was significantly more abundant on the surfaces of queen-laid eggs. This substance is also the most abundant compound on the cuticles of egg layers. 相似文献

Inclusive fitness theory predicts that in colonies of social Hymenoptera headed by a multiple‐mated queen, workers should benefit from policing eggs laid by other workers. Foster & Ratnieks provided evidence that in the vespine wasp Dolichovespula saxonica, workers police other workers’ eggs only in colonies headed by a multiple‐mated queen, but not in those headed by a single‐mated one. This conclusion, however, was based on a relatively small sample size, and the original study did not control for possible confounding variables such as the seasonal colony progression of the nests. Our aim, therefore, was to reinvestigate whether or not facultative worker policing occurs in D. saxonica. Remarkably, our data show that in the studied Danish population, there was no correlation between worker–worker relatedness and the percentage of worker‐derived males. In addition, we show that variability in cuticular hydrocarbon profiles among the workers did not significantly correlate with relatedness and that workers therefore probably did not have sufficient information on queen mating frequency from the workers’ cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. Hence, there was no evidence that workers facultatively policed other workers’ eggs in response to queen mating frequency. Nevertheless, our data do show that the seasonal progression of the nest and the location in which the males were reared both explain the patterns of worker reproduction found. Overall, our results suggest that the earlier evidence for facultative worker policing in D. saxonica may have been caused by accidental correlations with certain confounding variables, or, alternatively, that there are large interpopulation differences in the expression of worker policing. 相似文献

Worker honeybees (Apis mellifera) usually only lay eggs when their colony is queenless. However, an extremely rare ''anarchistic'' phenotype occurs, in which workers develop functional ovaries and lay large numbers of haploid eggs which develop into adult drones despite the presence of the queen. Studies of such colonies can give important insights into the mechanisms by which worker sterility is maintained in normal colonies. Here we report on the results of a breeding programme which enhanced the frequency of the anarchistic phenotype. Colonies derived from queens inseminated only by worker-laid males showed up to 9% of workers with highly developed ovaries. In these colonies a large proportion of males arose from worker-laid eggs. Colonies headed by queens inseminated with 50% worker-laid drones and 50% queen-laid drones showed variable phenotypes. In most such colonies there was no worker reproduction. In some, many workers had highly developed ovaries, but no worker-laid eggs were reared. In one colony, many worker-laid eggs were reared to maturity. The results suggest that the anarchy phenotype results from a complex interaction of queen genotype, the worker genotype of subfamilies that successfully reproduce and of those that do not, and the external environment. 相似文献

Mutual policing is thought to be important in conflict suppression at all levels of biological organization. In hymenopteran societies (bees, ants, and wasps), multiple mating by queens favors mutual policing of male production among workers (worker policing). However, worker policing of male production is proving to be more widespread than predicted by relatedness patterns, occurring in societies headed by single-mated queens in which, paradoxically, workers are more related to the workers' sons that they kill than the queen's sons that they spare. Here we develop an inclusive-fitness model to show that a second reproductive conflict, the conflict over sex allocation, can explain the evolution of worker policing contrary to relatedness predictions. Among ants, and probably other social Hymenoptera, workers kill males to favor their more related sisters. Importantly, males are killed at the larval stage, presumably because workers cannot determine the sex of queen-laid eggs. Sex-allocation biasing favors worker policing because policing removes some males (the workers' sons) at low cost at the egg stage rather than at higher cost at the larval stage. Our model reveals an important interaction between two reproductive conflicts in which the presence of one conflict (sex allocation) favors the suppression of the other (male production by workers). 相似文献

In some ants, bees, and wasps, workers kill or "police" maleeggs laid by other workers in order to maintain the reproductiveprimacy of the queen. Kin selection theory predicts that multiplemating by the queen is one factor that can selectively favorworker policing. This is because when the queen is mated tomultiple males, workers are more closely related to the queen'ssons than to the sons of other workers. Earlier work has suggestedthat reproductive patterns in the German wasp Vespula germanicamay contradict this theory, because in some colonies a largefraction of the adult males were inferred to be the workers'sons, despite the effective queen mating frequency being greaterthan 2 (2.4). In the present study, we reexamine the V. germanicacase and show that it does support the theory. First, geneticanalysis confirms that the effective queen mating frequencyis high, 2.9, resulting in workers being more related to thequeen's sons than to other workers' sons. Second, behavioralassays show that worker-laid eggs are effectively killed byother workers, despite worker-laid eggs having the same intrinsicviability as queen-laid ones. Finally, we estimate that approximately58.4% of the male eggs but only 0.44% of the adult males areworker derived in queenright colonies, consistent with workerreproduction being effectively policed. 相似文献

In a number of wasps, bees, and in particular ponerine ants, quantitative and qualitative variation in the profile of cuticular hydrocarbons is associated with variation in fecundity and is likely to serve for communicating the reproductive status of an individual. Here, we demonstrate that the chemical profile on the cuticle of fertile workers and queens of the myrmicine ant Temnothorax unifasciatus is different from that of non-reproductive workers. Fertility and apparently also cuticular signatures are reversible under the influence of policing by worker aggression. Though no policing by egg-eating occurs in this species, queen and worker laid eggs also differed in their chemical profile. 相似文献

Fine structure of the dorsal ocellus of the worker honeybee 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The three dorsal ocelli of worker honeybees have been studied by light and electron microscopy. Each ocellus has a single flattened spheroidal lens and about 800 elongated retinular cells. Retinular cells are paired and form a two-part plate-like rhabdom between their distal processes. Each rhabdomere comprises parallel microvilli projecting laterally from the apposed retinular cells. Primary receptor cell axons synapse within the ocellus with ocellar nerve fibers of two different calibers. Each ocellus has eight thick fibers ca 10 m?m in diameter and several thinner ones less than 3 m?m in diameter. Fine structural evidence suggests that retinular axons end presynaptically on both types of ocellar nerve fibers. Since all retinular cells apparently synapse repeatedly with the thick fibers this involves a convergence of about 100:1. Thick fibers always terminate postsynaptically within the ocellus while thin fibers terminate presynaptically on other thin fibers, thick fibers or retinular axons. Structural evidence for synaptic polarization indicates that retinular cells and thick fibers are afferent, thin fibers efferent. Thus complex processing of the ocellar visual input can occur before the secondary neurons of the three ocelli converge to form the single short ocellar nerve which runs to the posterior forebrain. 相似文献

An investigation of the ABO blood groups, the sickle cell trait, and the ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide among four endogamous tribal groups of Bastar in Central India is reported. These tribles, the Raj Gonds, the Murias, the Bhatras and the Halbas are shown to resemble one another in the genetic traits investigated to a remarkable degree, despite genetic and social isolation from each other. It is suggested that similarities between the tribes is due to their having shared a common geographical environment for hundreds of generations. 相似文献

Comparative analysis of worker reproduction and policing in eusocial hymenoptera supports relatedness theory 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In many bees, wasps, and ants, workers police each other in order to prevent individual workers from selfishly producing their own male offspring. Although several factors can selectively favor worker policing, genetic relatedness is considered to be of special importance. In particular, kin selection theory predicts that worker policing should be more common in species where workers are more related to the queen's sons than to other workers' sons. Here we provide strong novel support for this theory based on a comparative analysis of policing and male parentage in 109 species of ants, bees, and wasps. First, an analysis of behavioral data confirms that worker policing occurs more frequently in species where workers are more related to the queen's sons than to other workers' sons. Second, an analysis of male parentage shows that a significantly higher percentage of the males are workers' sons in species where the workers are more related to other workers' sons. Both conclusions also hold if data are analyzed using phylogenetically independent contrasts. Although our analysis provides strong overall support for the theory that relatedness affects kin conflict over male parentage, there is also significant residual variation. Several factors that may explain this variation are discussed. 相似文献

Pore plates (placoid chemosensillae) on the antennae of dead worker honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) apparently retained a static electric charge that was significantly different from that of the surrounding cuticle. Residual charge resulted in the concentration of airborne particulate matter over the rim of exposed pore plates to the virtual exclusion of such deposition on surrounding cuticle. Postmortem integrity of polar lipids associated with the pore plate and adjacent sense cells is hypothesized as the source of the static potential. Such a lipoidal matrix, if functioning as an electret and if attracting odorous molecules to receptor cells from outside the odor stream of individual receptors, would greatly enhance receptor efficiency of living bees. 相似文献

Development of hypopharyngeal glands (HPG) of native honey bee workers (Apis mellifera jemenitica) and Carniolan hybrid bees reared under normal constipations was studied. The HPG development degree and acini surface were influenced with age. The development degrees increased gradually. The maximum developmental degree was recorded at 9-days old in both two races. The development decreased after 12 days. The HPG development degree and acini surface of all ages in native bees were significantly less than Carniolan hybrid bees.Histological studies on HPG showed that there were some differences between the glands of the two races at the maximum developmental stage (9-days). The staining of cell cytoplasm by haematoxylin and eosin was similar. However secretory cells numbers were more in Carniolan hybrid than the native one. 相似文献

Convergent evolution in primates and an insectivore 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The cardiovascular risk factor LPA has a puzzling distribution among mammals, its presence being limited to a subset of primates and a member of the insectivore lineage, the hedgehog. To explore the evolutionary history of LPA, we performed extensive genomic sequence comparisons of multiple species with and without an LPA gene product, such as human, baboon, hedgehog, lemur, and mouse. This analysis indicated that LPA arose independently in a subset of primates, including baboon and human, and an insectivore, the hedgehog, and was not simply lost by species lacking it. The similar structural domains shared by the hedgehog and primate LPA indicate that they were formed by a unique molecular mechanism involving the convergent evolution of paralogous genes in these distant species. 相似文献

Summary. To determine whether and how honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) queens control the proportion of male reproductives, experiments were done with colonies under two nutritional conditions at two seasons. During the reproductive season the proportion of male eggs laid by queens under insufficiently-food-supplied conditions was lower than that under sufficiently-food-supplied conditions. The smaller proportion of male egg production could not be accounted for by cannibalization of male eggs by workers. The workers' allocation to male cell construction did not differ between sufficiently- and insufficiently-food-supplied conditions. During the non-reproductive season, however, queens showed much reduced or nearly no production of male eggs, even if the colonies were sufficiently supplied with food. These results suggest that the honeybee queen adjusts the egg sex ratio by referring to both the nutritional resources and their own intrinsic seasonal factors. 相似文献

In biology, natural selection is the main explanation of adaptations and it is an attractive idea to think that an analogous force could have the same role in cultural evolution. In support of this idea, all the main ingredients for natural selection have been documented in the cultural domain. However, the changes that occur during cultural transmission typically result in convergent transformation, non-random cultural modifications, casting some doubts on the importance of natural selection in the cultural domain. To progress on this issue more empirical research is needed. Here, using nearly half a million experimental trials performed by a group of baboons (Papio papio), we simulate cultural evolution under various conditions of natural selection and do an additional experiment to tease apart the role of convergent transformation and selection. Our results confirm that transformation strongly constrain the variation available to selection and therefore strongly limit its impact on cultural evolution. Surprisingly, in our study, transformation also enhances the effect of selection by stabilising cultural variation. We conclude that, in culture, selection can change the evolutionary trajectory substantially in some cases, but can only act on the variation provided by (typically biased) transformation. 相似文献

Establishment of characteristic gut bacteria during development of the honeybee worker 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Previous surveys have shown that adult honeybee (Apis mellifera) workers harbor a characteristic gut microbiota that may play a significant role in bee health. For three major phylotypes within this microbiota, we have characterized distributions and abundances across the life cycle and among gut organs. These distinctive phylotypes, called Beta, Firm-5, and Gamma-1 (BFG), were assayed using quantitative PCR, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) microscopy, and the experimental manipulation of inoculation routes within developing bees. Adult workers (9 to 30 days posteclosion) contained a large BFG microbiota with a characteristic distribution among gut organs. The crop and midgut were nearly devoid of these phylotypes, while the ileum and rectum together contained more than 95% of the total BFG microbiota. The ileum contained a stratified community in which the Beta and Gamma-1 phylotypes dominated, filling the longitudinal folds of this organ. Deep sequencing of 16S rRNA genes showed clear differences among communities in midgut, ileum, and rectum. In contrast with older workers, larvae and newly emerged workers contain few or no bacteria, and their major food source, bee bread, lacks most characteristic phylotypes. In experiments aimed at determining the route of inoculation, newly emerged workers (NEWs) sometimes acquired the typical phylotypes through contact with older workers, contact with the hive, and emergence from the brood cell; however, transmission was patchy in these assays. Our results outline a colonization pattern for the characteristic phylotypes through A. mellifera ontogeny. We propose the names "Candidatus Snodgrassella alvi" and "Candidatus Gilliamella apicola" for the Beta and Gamma-1 phylotypes, respectively. 相似文献

In the honeybee Apis mellifera, a sting pheromone produced by sting glands plays an important role in coordinating defensive behavior. This pheromone is a blend constituted by several components. Little is known about the neural substrates underlying sting pheromone processing in the bee brain. Here, we investigated the neural activity elicited by eight components (five acetates and three alcohols) of the sting pheromone, and by real bee stings at the level of the antennal lobe (AL) of worker honeybees. We used in vivo calcium imaging to record odor-induced neural activity of 22 identified glomeruli in the AL. We found that acetates mainly activated medial glomeruli while alcohols mainly activated lateral dorsal glomeruli. The sting preparation evoked a glomerular pattern that was clearly distinct from those of individual pheromone components. No particular region of the imaged AL was found to process sting pheromone or any of its components. Further analyses in a putative honeybee olfactory space showed that the neural activity elicited by sting preparation cannot be linearly predicted by those of pheromone components and that such components are not clearly separated from non-sting pheromone odors. We conclude that sting pheromone is processed in the worker honeybee AL following the same principles of general odors so that the chemical structure of odorants is the main determinant of glomerular activation, rather than their pheromonal values. We cannot exclude, however, that the distinctness of sting-pheromone representation with respect to that of its components constitutes a form of specialized neural processing strategy for this kind of substance. 相似文献
