Summary The effect of 11 fungicides, viz Aliette, Bayleton 5, Benlate, Dithane M45, Euparene, Karathane, Orthocide 83RP, Pelt 44, Tilt C, Tilt 125 and Tripomol 80, on vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in leek and wheat growing in a calcined clay was studied in the greenhouse at four concentrations applied to the foliage. Fungicides had minimal effects when applied to leek or wheat plants with well-established mycorrhiza. Mycorrhizal infection was not drastically affected by any fungicide at any application level. However, mycorrhizal infection of leek plants was reduced by systemic fungicides, and that of wheat by non-systemic fungicides. Aliette was the only fungicide that stimulated mycorrhizal development.  相似文献

In a 2-year experiment at an open-air ozone fumigation field, the effects of fungicide application and low-level ozone exposure, single and combined, on fine root and mycorrhiza condition of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings were studied. Two different fungicides, copper oxychloride and propiconazole, with different modes of actions, were used. Propiconazole treatment reduced mycorrhizal infection in both years while copper oxychloride treatment and ozone exposure slightly stimulated mycorrhizal infection after the first year. Different mycorrhizal morphotypes showed different kinds of responses to the two fungicides. Light brown morphotype appeared to be the most sensitive one to propiconazole treatment. After the second year, ectendomycorrhizas disappeared in propiconazole treatment while in control treatment ectendomycorrhizas formed the majority of the light brown morphotype. The root biomass was not affected by fungicide treatments, but ozone exposure increased the total amount of short roots and the fresh weight of propiconazole treated roots. No significant differences in the concentrations of ergosterol, starch and total phenolics in pine roots between treatments were found. However, ergosterol concentration correlated positively with the mycorrhizal infection level. Both fungicides reduced the soil respiration compared to controls. At the ultrastructural level, both fungicides caused increased transparency and gradual granulation and degeneration of cytoplasm in the fungal symbiont of mycorrhizal short roots. Slightly elevated ozone did not have harmful effects on root ultrastructure. These results suggest that fungicides have deleterious effects on the quantity and quality of mycorrhizas in Scots pine roots and also side-effects on non-target soil fungi. Some of these deleterious effects were noticeable only at the ultrastructural level. Received: 23 June 1997 / Accepted: 11 December 1997  相似文献

The effect of three pesticides on the initiation and early development of arbuscular mycorrhiza in cotton was examined in experiments under controlled conditions. The fungicides Terrazole and Terraclor initially inhibited mycorrhizal infection of roots of cotton. The inhibition disappeared after 4 weeks, and neither fungicide had a lasting effect. The nematicide Fenamiphos slightly increased shoot dry weight at 6–10 weeks from planting and had no effect on mycorrhizal infection. We conclude that these pesticides have no sustained, detrimental effect on mycorrhizal infection or growth of cotton seedlings when applied at recommended rates. Accepted: 30 May 1997  相似文献

Summary We examined how mycorrhizal infection byGlomus etunicatum Becker and Gerd. affected flowering phenology and components of reproduction in eight wild accessions and two cultivars ofLycopersicon esculentum Mill. We did this by performing a detailed demographic study of flower, fruit and seed production. Mycorrhizal infection had variable effects on the ten accessions. Infection significantly decreased the time taken to initiate flowering in some accessions. In addition, infection increased flowering duration in some accessions. In many accessions, infection significantly increased seed production, primarily by increasing the number of inflorescences and infructescences. In some accessions, mycorrhizal infection also increased the proportion of flowers that produced mature fruits or the number of seeds per fruit. Among accessions, shoot phosphorus content was correlated with seed productivity for both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. However, non-mycorrhizal plants produced more seed biomass per mg of shoot phosphorus than mycorrhizal plants.  相似文献

Mycorrhizal infection of Abutilon theophrasti Medic, increased seed quality and resultant offspring performance, but the improvement varied significantly with the timing of seed production. In general, offspring from mycorrhizal plants were superior to offspring from non-mycorrhizal plants, but the difference was greatest for the early cohort of seeds. Because increased seed size and quality can affect subsequent offspring competitive ability, increased variability in seed size and quality due to mycorrhizal infection may have an important impact on population dynamics of A. theophrasti.  相似文献

We show here that seed reserves in Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. and Zea mays L. (maize) are important for mycorrhizal formation and seedling growth. Seed reserve removal reduced mycorrhizal formation markedly in Leucaena but not in maize, except at 15 and 45 days after seed reserve removal. Partial or total removal of seed reserves decreased plant growth and tissue nutrient concentrations in both hosts. Nodule number in Leucaena, which was related positively to plant biomass and mycorrhizal infection levels, was reduced when one or both cotyledons were severed. Leucaena seedlings without or with partial seed reserves had higher nutrient use efficiencies throughout seedling growth. But such an effect was observed only initially in maize. Seed reserve removal increased the specific absorption rates of nutrients in both hosts. Phosphorus absorption rate was significantly and positively related to root infection levels in both Leuceana and maize. Though the growth rates of plants without seed reserves were low initially, these plants had higher growth rates during later stages. We conclude that seed reserves are not only important for seedling growth, but also for mycorrhizal formation and nodulation. Received: 15 July 1999 / Accepted: 6 December 1999  相似文献

To test the effect of seed treatment with fungicides on the development of mycorrhizal fungi, bean seeds were treated with fungicide dry or vehicled in the organic solvents, ethanol or dichloromethane and then planted in soil inoculated with the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus macrocarpum and/or the plant pathogenic fungus Fusarium solani. Measurements were made at 4 day intervals, to evaluate the location and extent of colonization of either Glomus macrocarpum or Fusarium solani in the root system. Most combinations of fungicide-solvent had little effect on the extent of colonization by each fungus individually. However, when both fungi were inoculated together, symptoms of F. solani were seen only in the tips of roots which indicate that the mycorrhizal fungus was able to limit the occurrence of the pathogenic fungus.  相似文献

Summary The objective of this study was to determine whether infection of Avena fatua L. plants by the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith could influence the vigor of the offspring generation. Two experiments demonstrated that mycorrhizal infection of the maternal generation had slight but persistent positive effects on offspring leaf expansion in the early stages of growth. In two other experiments, mycorrhizal infection of mother plants had several long lasting effects on their offspring. Offspring produced by mycorrhizal mother plants had greater leaf areas, shoot and root nutrient contents and root:shoot ratios compared to those produced by non-mycorrhizal mother plants. Moreover, mycorrhizal infection of mother plants significantly reduced the weight of individual seeds produced by offspring plants while it increased the P concentrations of the seeds and the number of seeds per spikelet produced by offspring plants. The effects of mycorrhizal infections of maternal plants on the vigor and performance of offspring plants were associated with higher seed phosphorus contents but generally lighter seeds. The results suggest that mycorrhizal infection may influence plant fitness by increasing offspring vigor and offspring reproductive success in addition to previously reported increases in maternal fecundity.  相似文献

The combined effect of Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizae (VAM) and Rhizobium on the cold season legumes, lentil and faba bean, as well as on summer legume, soybean, were studied in soils with low indeginous VA mycorrhizal spores. Inoculation of the plant with VA mycorrhizal fungi increased the level of mycorrhizal root infection of lentil, faba bean and soybean. The inoculation with Rhizobium had no significant effect on VA mycorrhizal infection percent, but VA mycorrhizal inoculation increased nodulation of the three legumes. The inoculation with Rhizobium alone significantly increased plant dry weight and N content of lentil and faba bean as well as seed yield of soybean. VA mycorrhizal inoculation also significantly increased plant dry weight and phosphorus content of the plants as did fertilization with superphosphate. Rock phosphate fertilization, however, had no significant effect on plant growth or phosphorus uptake. The addition of rock phosphate in combination with VA mycorrhizal inoculation significantly increased plant dry weight and P uptake of the plants. The dual inoculation with both rhizobia and mycorrhizae induced more significant increases in plant dry weight, N and P content of lentil and faba bean as well as seed yield of soybean than inoculation with either VA mycorrhizae or Rhizobium alone.  相似文献

Mycorrhizal growth in pure cultures in the presence of pesticides   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The effects of pesticides on 64 ectomycorrhizal fungi of boreal forest trees were studied in vitro. The pesticides (fungicides: benomyl, chlorothalonil, copper oxychloride, maneb and propiconazole; herbicides: chlorthiamid, glyphosate, hexazinone, linuron and terbuthylazine; insecticide: cypermethrin) were selected as those commonly used in Nordic forest nurseries and afforestation sites. In general, the fungicides proved to be more toxic to ectomycorrhizal fungi than the herbicides and cypermethrin. The fungicides, chlorothalonil and propiconazole, had the clearest inhibitory effect on growth of mycorrhizal fungi. Conversely, maneb, glyphosate and terbuthylazine stimulated the growth of some mycorrhizal fungi. Leccinum versipelle and L. scabrum, Paxillus involutus and Cenococcum geophilum were the most sensitive ectomycorrhizal fungi to the various pesticides.  相似文献

The toxicity of organo-mercury fungicides to sugar-beet seed increased with the amount added and with the moisture content of the seed. Methyl mercury dicyandiamide was more phytotoxic than the less volatile ethyl and phenyl mercury compounds tested. In a bioassay for organo-mercury fungicides on seeds, the area of inhibition decreased when moist treated seed was stored in airtight containers.  相似文献

The effects of soil fertility (two levels of soil nitrogen and two levels of soil phosphorus) and mycorrhizal infection on pollen production and pollen grain size were studied in two cultivars of the common zucchini (Cucurbita pepo). Overall, soil fertility and mycorrhizal infection had significant effects on traits affecting the male function of plants (staminate flower production, pollen production per flower and pollen grain size). There were also differences between the cultivars for these male traits in all three experiments. In addition, pollen grain size decreased toward the end of the growing season. In the mycorrhiza experiment, both phosphate concentration per pollen grain and total phosphate content per anther were greater but not significantly greater in the mycorrhizal plants than in the non-mycorrhizal plants. A significant negative relationship between pollen production and pollen grain size was found in the mycorrhiza and soil phosphorus experiments, indicating that there was a trade-off between pollen production and pollen size. This study is the first to show that mycorrhizal infection has an effect on male function (pollen production and size) in addition to the well-documented effects on female function (fruit/seed production and size).  相似文献

The present investigation examines whether the crop plant, increased nitrogen (N) fertilization and fungicide application influence the pattern of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAM) populations. For this purpose, two arable field locations in Lower Saxony (Hotteln and Langreder) were chosen and the formation of mycorrhiza, spore density, number of infectious propagules (MPN) and frequency of spore types within VAM populations were investigated. The influence of crop plants was examined over two cultivation periods (1986/1987 and 1987/1988) in Hotteln, comparing winter wheat, winter barley and sugar beet. The effects of increased N fertilization and fungicide application were investigated on winter wheat in Langreder in the cultivation period 1988 only. Both the frequency of mycorrhizal infection and the spore dynamics in soil differed with the crops grown. Spore density and MPN increased until harvesting when host plants (winter wheat, winter barley) were cultivated, whereas both diminished with a non-host plant (sugar beet). Different spore types increased or decreased, according to the plant species grown, but the predominating types of the location remained constant. Increased N fertilization caused marginal inhibition of mycorrhizal infection and sporulation on winter wheat, whereas both leaf and base application of fungicides resulted in minor increases in mycorrhizal colonization of roots and sporulation in soil. Both increased N fertilization and fungicide application distinctly decreased the sporulation of one type in May, but the characteristic compositions of the VAM populations remained unchanged.  相似文献

The effects of 10 fungicides on the growth of Colletotrichum coccodes in agar culture and on the germination of conidia was investigated. In field experiments in 1990 and 1991 the extent to which treating black dot-affected potato seed tubers with fungicides affected the development of the disease on stem bases, roots and tubers was assessed. Black dot was also assessed on plants from field trials in 1990 which were designed to investigate the efficacy of the soil sterilant 1,3-dichloropropene (Telone) and two nematicides, aldicarb (Temik) and ethoprophos (Mocap). Prochloraz and fenpiclonil were the most effective fungicides in decreasing the size of C. coccodes colonies on agar. Imazalil, propiconazole and dichlorophen were also effective, but at higher concentrations, whereas tolclofos-methyl, thiabendazole and benomyl were only moderately effective. Resistant sectors developed from inhibited colonies on agar containing fenpiclonil and tolclofos-methyl. Conidial germination was prevented at 1 mg/litre fenpiclonil and 5 mg/ litre dichlorophen; imazalil, benomyl and thiabendazole were also moderately effective. Fenpiclonil and propiconazole seed tuber treatments consistently decreased black dot infection on roots, stem bases and daughter tubers early in the season, but only fenpiclonil decreased disease on tubers at harvest in October. Propiconazole also delayed emergence and decreased stem numbers. Soil treatment with 1,3-dichloropropene, aldicarb or ethoprophos had no effect on black dot but Rhizoctonia solani tuber infection and black scurf were increased.  相似文献

Effect of fungicides on mycorrhizal colonization and growth of onion   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Effect of five fungicidesviz Agrosan. Benlate, Captan, Ceresan and Plantavax on VA mycorrhizal symbiosis in onion was studied in a phosphorus deficient, sandy loam soil. Two levels of fungicides (2.5 g and 25 g/g soil) were applied to the soil. Agrosan, Benlate and Plantavax applied at 25 g/g soil reduced the mycorrhizal colonization significantly. All the fungicides, except Captan, applied at lower concentration reduced plant growth and P uptake. Captan applied at the lower concentration had no effect on mycorrhizal colonization, plant growth and P uptake, and when applied at higher concentration had least effect on plant growth compared to other fungicides.Contribution of U.A.S. Stimulation of vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi may secure the early establishment of symbiosis and benefit the host plant at an earlier stage of development. The application of Bacillus mycoides resulted in particular in the acceleration of early VA mycorrhiza formation. An increase in vigour of the symbiosis could be measured later in terms of increased sporulation of the mycorrhizal fungi after shoot removal. Natural sporulation during later mycorrhizal development was affected by combination of bacteria and just one mycorrhizal isolate. The stimulation of mycorrhizal development was shown to be non-specific with regard to host plant and the isolate of the VAM fungus. However, the effect could not be achieved in all combinations of soil types and host plants. Application of the systemic fungicides triadimefon and pyrazophos promoted VAM formation. Combinations of fungicide and bacterial treatments were not synergistic.  相似文献

Andropogon gerardii seed obtained from Kansas and Illinois was grown in a controlled environment in their own and each other's soils, with and without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Each ecotype grew comparatively better in its own soil indicating adaptation to its soil of origin. Overall, A. gerardii benefited more from AMF in low-nutrient Kansas soil than Illinois soil. The two ecotypes, however, did not benefit equally from mycorrhizal infection. The Kansas ecotype was three times more responsive to mycorrhizal infection in the Kansas soil than was the Illinois ecotype. Our results indicate that plant adaptation to the nutrient levels of their local soils is likely to be due, at least in part, to a shift in their dependence on mycorrhizal fungi. The Illinois ecotype of A. gerardii has evolved a reduced dependence upon these fungi and greater reliance on a more highly branched root system. In contrast, the Kansas ecotype had a significantly coarser root system and invested proportionately greater carbon in the symbiotic association with AMF as measured by spore production. This study provides the first demonstration that plants can adapt to changing soil nutrient levels by shifting their dependence on AMF. This result has broad implications for our understanding of the role of these fungi in agricultural systems.  相似文献

Benomyl and thiabendazole, applied as dusts to seed potatoes before chitting (sprouting), reduced the incidence of silver scurf disease on the progeny at lifting and during subsequent storage. Treatment of seed tubers 4 months prior to planting almost completely suppressed sporulation during storage, even under conditions very favourable for the growth of the fungus. The fungicides appeared not to act systemically because developing tubers grown from treated seed were just as susceptible to infection after inoculation as those from untreated. Control was due to effective inhibition of sporulation on the surface of diseased seed tubers after planting. There was no reduction in the amount of disease in subsequent generations of potato crops without further fungicidal treatment. Seed virtually free from silver scurf, produced from seed treated with fungicide in the previous year, yielded progeny with as much disease as progeny from untreated seed stocks.

Chalkbrood is a serious disease of alfalfa leafcutting bee Megachile rotundata (F.) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) larvae, causing upward of 20% infection in the field. The causative agent is the fungus Ascosphaera aggregata. This bee is used extensively for alfalfa seed pollination in the United States. Using laboratory bioassays, we previously demonstrated that fungicides can reduce chalkbrood levels in the larvae. Here, we evaluate the toxicity of four fungicides, Benlate, Captan, Orbit, and Rovral, to adult bees by using three different bioassays. In the first test, fungicides were applied to bees' thoraces. In the second test, mimicking foliage residue, a piece of filter paper soaked in fungicide was placed on the bottom of a container of bees. The third test evaluated oral toxicity by incorporating fungicides into a sugar-water solution that was fed to the bees. The filter paper test did not discriminate among the fungicides well, and the oral test resulted in the greatest mortality. Toxicity to males was greater than to females. The use of fungicides for chalkbrood control is a logical choice, but caution should be used in how they are applied in the presence of bees.  相似文献
