The catfish C. batrachus were exposed to a long photoperiod of 14 hr light during resting--early preparatory (December-February) phases of the reproductive cycle. At 70-day sampling, both the seminal vesicle (SV) and testis registered marked stimulatory effects in comparisons to control fish maintained under approximately 10.55 L:13.45D as shown by the increased size and weight. In both the SV and testis, concentrations of total proteins, fructose, hexosamines, and sialic acid were significantly high compared to those of the control fish indicating increased activities of the organs. Serum levels of gonadotropin-II, testosterone, and estradiol-17 beta were significantly high in the long photoperiod group. The results show that exposure to long photoperiod can stimulate early development of both the SV and testis by activating the pituitary--gonadal axis.  相似文献

The effects of pinealectomy on testicular activity and secretory activity of seminal vesicles were examined in the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis under various combinations of photoperiod and temperature during different periods of the annual reproductive cycle. Pinealectomy had no effect on gonadal activity during the preparatory, prespawning and spawning periods of the reproductive cycle. However, during the postspawning period, under long (LD 14:10) or short (LD 9:15) photoperiod at 25° C or at gradually increasing ambient temperature, pinealectomy accelerated testicular recrudescence and secretory activity of the seminal vesicles. Nevertheless. during this period the presence of the pineal facilitated the recrudescence of testes and seminal vesicles in catfish exposed to continuous light (LL), continuous darkness (DD) and 12 hL:l2 hD (LD) at 25° C. These findings suggest that the role of the pineal in catfish reproduction is variable and depends upon the photoperiod and temperature regimes to which the fish are exposed, as well as on the time of the year and the state of the reproductive cycle. The results also suggest that the effects of pinealectomy in catfish are mediated through an influence on the hypothalamo-hypophyseal gonadal axis.  相似文献

In the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis, the hypothalamus and telencephalon showed seasonal variations in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) with high levels in prespawning and spawning phases and low levels in preparatory and postspawning phases. Ovariectomy for 4 and 5 weeks reduced significantly the GABA contents only in the hypothalamus. Replacement with E2 (1 microgram/g BW) restored the levels to that of sham ovariectomized or parallel control group. Treatment with GABA (i.p.; 10 or 50 micrograms/g body weight (BW) alone did not produce any significant effect on plasma gonadotropin-II (GTH-II) level in any of the seasons. Injection of GABA, but not baclofen (a GABAB agonist), stimulated GTH-II secretion in pimozide or GnRH analogue-pimozide pretreated fish at both 0.5 and 2 h in early prespawning phase except at 0.5 h in the pimozide--GABA (10 micrograms) group. This stimulatory effect was not evident in other seasons. The results of the present study suggest that Estradiol-17 beta (E2) seems to stimulate GABA which may account for its high level in the recrudescent phase. GABA seems to have a permissive role in GTH-II secretion when dopamine receptor function is inhibited.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to investigate the circadian melatonin system in two tropical teleost species characterized by different behavioral habits, Nile tilapia (diurnal) and African catfish (nocturnal). To do so, fish were subjected to either a control photoperiod (12L:12D), continuous light (LL) or darkness (DD), or a 6L:6D photoperiod. Under 12L:12D, plasma melatonin levels were typically low during the photophase and high during the scotophase in both species. Interestingly, in both species, melatonin levels significantly decreased prior to the onset of light, which in catfish reached similar basal levels to those during the day, demonstrating that melatonin production can anticipate photic changes probably through circadian clocks. Further evidence for the existence of such pacemaker activity was obtained when fish were exposed to DD, as a strong circadian melatonin rhythm was maintained. Such an endogenous rhythm was sustained for at least 18 days in Nile tilapia. A similar rhythm was shown in catfish, although DD was only tested for four days. Under LL, the results confirmed the inhibitory effect of light on melatonin synthesis already reported in other species. Finally, when acclimatized to a short photo-cycle (6L:6D), no endogenous melatonin rhythm was observed in tilapia under DD, with melatonin levels remaining high. This could suggest that the circadian clocks cannot entrain to such a short photocycle. Additional research is clearly needed to further characterize the circadian axis in teleost species, identify and localize the circadian clocks, and better understand the environmental entrainment of fish physiology.  相似文献

Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT) is the rate-limiting enzyme of melatonin biosynthetic pathway. In vitro effects of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and indoleamines (serotonin, N-acetylserotonin and melatonin) were studied on AA-NAT activity in the pineal organ of the fish, C. gariepinus during different phases of its annual breeding cycle. Further, in vitro effects of leptin on AA-NAT activity in the pineal organ were studied in fed and fasted fishes during summer and winter seasons. Treatments with 5-HTP and indoleamines invariably stimulated pineal AA-NAT activity in a dose-dependent manner during all the phases. However, leptin increased AA-NAT activity in a dose-dependent manner only in the pineal organ of the fed fishes, but not of the fasted fishes irrespective of the seasons.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the daily hypothalamic mRNA expression profiles for two core circadian regulatory proteins, CLOCK2 and PER1, and for two neuropeptides that regulate wakefulness and food intake, OX and NPY, in goldfish. The profiles were determined for fish at different nutritional states (i.e. fed or unfed on sampling day) and held at different photoperiods (i.e. 16L:8D photoperiod vs. constant light LL). Our results show that under a 16L:8D photoperiod, both fed and unfed goldfish exhibit clear antiphasic daily rhythms of hypothalamic Clock2 and Per1 mRNA expression levels, whereas under LL, daily Clock2 rhythms are seen in both fed and unfed fish while significant rhythms of Per1 mRNA expression only persist in unfed fish. In fish held under 16L:8D, but not under LL, there was significantly higher Per1 expression in fed fish at feeding time than in unfed fish. Daily variations in hypothalamic OX mRNA expression levels with peaks observed prior to both feeding time and the onset of darkness, were displayed under a 16L:8D photoperiod, whereas exposure to LL resulted in lower expression levels with no significant daily variations. Fish held under LL, but not under 16L:8D, showed significant daily variations in NPY mRNA expression with a peak prior to feeding time. Taken together, our results suggest that the mRNA expression of both appetite-regulating and circadian proteins display daily variations and that these patterns can be affected by external cues such as feeding and photoperiod.  相似文献

The present study attempted for the first time to explore the importance of photoperiod in the regulation of seasonal ovarian functions in any subtropical major carp. Adult Indian major carp Catla catla were transferred to a long photoperiod (LP; LD 16:8) or a short photoperiod (SP; LD 8:16) for 30 days on 4 dates corresponding to the beginnings of 4 reproductive phases in an annual cycle, and responsiveness of the ovary was evaluated by comparison with the gonadal weight (I(G)), relative number of developing oocytes, serum levels of vitellogenin, and the activity of 2 important steroidogenic enzymes, that is, Delta(5)3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and 17.beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, in the ovary of fish in a natural photoperiod. Exposure of fish to LP during the preparatory phase (February-March) resulted in a significant (p < 0.001) increase in the values of vitellogenin and in the activity of both the steroidogenic enzymes but not in the ovarian weight and in the relative number of different stages of oocytes. A more stimulatory influence of LP was noted during the prespawning phase (April-May), when precocious maturation of ovary was evident from a significant (p < 0.001) rise in the values of each studied features of ovarian functions. However, no ovarian response was found when the fish were transferred to LP during the spawning (July-August) and the postspawning (September-October) phases. On the other hand, the SP was found to have an inhibitory influence on ovarian growth and maturation during the prespawning and the spawning phases or to have no influences on ovarian functions during the preparatory and the postspawning phases of an annual cycle. The results of our study provide the first evidence that photoperiod per se plays an important role in the seasonal maturation of ovary in a subtropical freshwater major carp.  相似文献

Female Clarias batrachus acclimated to long photoperiod (13L:11D), were subjected to 30º ± 1ºC thermopulses of either 6-hour or 12-hour duration at different phases of the LD cycle during the late resting phase (first week of January) of their annual reproductive cycle. Six-hour pulses were given either at 0600 or 1200 or 1800 or 0000. Twelve-hour thermopulses were given at 0600 or 1800. The long photoperiods were started at 0530 and that of ambient at 0630 coinciding with the average timing of sunrise that prevailed during the period of the study. The results indicate that exposure to long photoperiod or constant high temperature induced gonadal growth (GSI) and elevated testosterone and oestradiol levels in plasma. The high temperature was significantly more effective in its action. Further, combination of long photoperiod and high temperature produced the strongest gonadal stimulation as gauged from GSI and the levels of steroid hormones. Interestingly, 30ºC thermopulses of 12-h duration when given at 0600 to fish held under long photoperiod induced gonadal development of comparable magnitude as observed in response to constant high temperature under long photoperiod. Thermopulses (30ºC) of 6-h duration given at 0600 or 1200 also induced significant gonadal recrudescence but of much lesser magnitude. Thermopulses either of 6-h or 12-h duration at 1800 failed to elicit any change in the variables under study. The results of cosinor analysis performed on the responses to 6-h thermopulses also substantiate that there is a rhythm in the sensitivity of C. batrachus to thermopulses. Thus it appears that in this species temperature-induced gonadal recrudescence would occur only following coincidence of high temperature with the thermoinducible phase. The underlying mechanism of this phenomenon might be circadian in nature.  相似文献

The effects of a photoperiod reduction in the entrainment of circadian rhythms of systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR), and spontaneous locomotor activity (SLA) were determined in conscious Wistar rats by using radiotelemetry. Two groups of seven rats were maintained in a 12:12-h light-dark (12L/12D) photoperiod for 11 wk and then placed in a reduced photoperiod of 8:16-h light-dark (8L/16D) by advancing a 4-h darkness or by advancing and delaying a 2-h darkness for 6 wk. Finally, they were resynchronized to 12L/12D. Advancing a 4-h dark phase induced a 1-h advance of acrophase for SBP, DBP, and HR, but not for SLA. The percent rhythm, amplitude, and the 12-h mean values of all parameters were significantly decreased by the photoperiod reduction. When symmetrically advancing and delaying a 2-h dark phase, a 1 h 20 min delay of acrophases and a decrease in percent rhythms and amplitudes of SBP, DBP, HR, and SLA were observed. Only the 12-h mean values of HR and SLA were decreased. Our findings show that the cardiovascular parameters differ from SLA in phase-shift response to photoperiod reduction and that the adjustment of circadian rhythms to change from 12L/12D to 8L/16D photoperiod depends on the direction of the extension of the dark period.  相似文献

The effect of stocking density on the locomotor activity of African catfish C. gariepinus under different light regimes was investigated. C. gariepinus were stocked under different densities (1, 5, or 10 fish/tank), and their locomotor activity recorded under light-dark (LD), constant light (LL), constant darkness (DD), and LD-reversed (DL) regimens. Under the LD cycle, catfish showed a crepuscular activity pattern, irrespective of stocking density, with most of the daily activity concentrated around the light-onset and light-offset times. When fish were subjected to DD, all 4 tanks with medium (5 fish) and high (10 fish) stocking densities showed circadian rhythmicity, with an average period (?) of 23.3???0.5 and 24.6???0.5?h, respectively. In contrast, only 2 low (1 fish) density tanks showed free-running rhythms. Under LL, activity levels decreased significantly in comparison with levels observed under LD and DD. Moreover, fish of 1, 2, and 3 out of the 4 tanks with low, medium, and high densities, respectively, showed free-running rhythms under these conditions. When the photocycle was reversed (DL), fish of 3, 2, and 4 out of the 4 tanks with low, medium, and high stocking densities, respectively, showed gradual resynchronization to the new phase, and transient cycles of activity were observed. These results suggest that stocking density of fish affected the display of circadian rhythmicity and the intensity of activity levels. Thus, fish kept in higher densities showed more robust rhythmicity and higher levels of daily activity, indicating that social interactions may have an influence on behavioral patterns in the African catfish.  相似文献

A study has been made of the effect of photoperiodism on the ovarian maturation of fresh water teleost, Mystus tengara (Ham.). The magnitude of ovarian recrudescence is more during maturing virgin phase as compared to during immature virgin and preparatory virgin phases in long photoperiod (14 hours/day) treated fish. Thus, the response of the ovary to long photoperiod increases with the approach of natural spawning period. The mature eggs are more in long photoperiod treated fish than in controls exposed to 12 hours/day photoperiod. In long photoperiod treated fish, prespawning period is reduced considerably. During spawning and post-spawning periods, the ovaries are refractory, since long photoperiod is ineffective in maintaining gravid ovaries beyond spawning period and the ovarian regression during post spawning period sets in regardless of nature of photoperiod treatment.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of pharmacological inhibition of catecholaminergic activity on hCG-induced spawning was evaluated and correlated with tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity, the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis. Gravid female H. fossilis collected in both prespawning and spawning phases were given alpha-methylparatyrosine (alpha-MPT: 250 microg/g body weight, ip, an irreversible inhibitor of TH) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG: 100 IU/fish, ip) alone or in combination. The fish were sampled at different intervals for measuring hypothalamic and ovarian TH activity and checking spawning response. The administration of hCG resulted in ovulation and spawning in both phases with a higher response in the spawning phase. The administration of alpha-MPT did not induce any response, like the control fish. In the hCG + alpha-MPT groups, the spawning response of hCG was significantly inhibited and delayed by the inhibitor. The spawning response of hCG was accompanied by a significant increase in both hypothalamic and ovarian TH activity at 6 and 12 h of the injection. However, at 24hr the activity decreased except in the spawning phase. The alpha-MPT treatment inhibited TH activity significantly in a duration-dependent manner. In the hCG + alpha-MPT groups, enzyme activity was inhibited at all duration. The results indicate the involvement of catecholamines during the hCG-induced spawning and the specific functional nature of the involvement needs further investigation.  相似文献

Diurnal variations of nitrate reductase (NR) activity and stability have been studied in leaves of barley seedlings ( Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Herta) grown in an 8 h light/16 h darkness regime. Stability (decay) of NR was tested both in the extracts and in the plants. In the morning, when the plants were transferred to light, NR activity increased rapidly during the first hour and then remained constant. After the photoperiod, activity decreased rapidly during the first hour of darkness and then remained fairly constant during the rest of the dark period. The high NR activity during the photoperiod was associated with low NR stability both in the extracts and in the plants. On the other hand the low NR activity during the dark period was associated with high stability in the extracts and in the plants.  相似文献

Synopsis The effects of pinealectomy, blinding, and exposure to constant darkness were examined in female goldfish during different seasons. Neither blinding nor pinealectomy under short or decreasing photoperiod conditions, nor exposure to constant darkness had an effect on ovarian activity in goldfish during fall and winter. In spring, constant darkness has an inhibitory effect on ovarian activity. Pinealectomy under increasing photoperiod conditions partially inhibits reproductive activity, but not to the extent of constant darkness. Blinding, under the same regime also inhibited to some extent the ovarian response to increasing photoperiod. Our data suggest that retinal pathways and the pineal organ are involved in the photosexual response to increasing day lengths.Address correspondence to: Dr. V. The stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch, 1974) is a commercially important fish species in Asia. This is an important food fish as is enriched with high amounts of protein, iron and calcium. The current research demonstrates the population structure, size at sexual maturity, spawning- and peak-spawning season and fecundity of H. fossilis in an important wetland ecosystem - Gajner Beel in northwestern Bangladesh with an aim of its sustainable conservation through induced breeding and aquaculture practices. A total of 426 stinging catfish captured from the Gajner Beel through monthly sampling from January to December 2019 used in the study. Total length (TL), standard length (SL) and body weight (BW) of individual fishes were measured. The size ranges were with 6.70–24.10 cm TL, 1.37–83.94 g BW. Gonads were removed carefully through ventral dissection and weighted. Lm was 14.02, 13.5, 13.0 and 15.0 cm based on maximum length (Lmax), TL vs. GSI (%), TL vs. SL and logistic model, respectively. Monthly variations of GSI and maturation stages were confirmed in April to August as spawning season and June as peak spawning month. Fulton’s condition factor (KF) was found to be with significant relations with GSI values. Fecundity was 1,730 to 23,870 and significantly correlated with both TL and BW. Temperature has been increasing 0.029 °C/year with the falling of rainfall at 2.96 mm/year in the study area. Environmental factors -Temperature, rainfall, dissolved oxygen and pH were found to be significantly correlated with GSI. We found the optimal range of temperature (29–31 °C), rainfall (350–380 mm), dissolved oxygen (5.0–6.0 mg/l) and pH (7.1–7.5) for spawning of H. fossilis. The paper recommended the policy guidelines to pave the ways of the aquaculture, conservation and management of H. fossilis in the changing eco-climatic events through specific management measures.  相似文献

Previously, we found that the ancient Chinese remedy of Suanzaorentang was a promising anxiolytic drug (Chen and Hsieh, 1985; Chen and Hsieh, 1985a). We also found that Suanzaorentang decreased the turnover rate of central monoamines and central catecholaminergic activity (Hsieh, et al., 1986). In this study, we found that 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) induced decrease in locomotor activity was significantly antagonized by Suanzaorentang, p-chlorophenylalanine (p-CPA) induced increase in locomotor activity was significantly inhibited by Suanzaorentang, Suanzaorentang had no significant effects on baclofen, muscimol, aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA) and thiosemicarbazide induced changes in locomotor activity, Suanzaorentang significantly decreased vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) in striatum and hippocampus, homovanillic acid (HVA) in hippocampus and 5-hydroxyindol acetic acid (5-HIAA) in striatum and hypothalamus, Suanzaorentang significantly reversed the alpha-methyltyrosine (alpha-MT) produced decrease in DA concentrations in striatum and hippocampus, and (6) Suanzaorentang significantly reversed the p-CPA produced decrease in 5-HT concentrations on amygdala. These facts implied that Suanzaorentang might decrease the serotonergic activity but have no significant effect on GABAergic activity. The main locus of action might be in the limbic system.  相似文献

Effects of daily administration of melatonin for 15 days were evaluated with respect to ovarian activities and plasma gonadotropin (GtH II) and vitellogenin (Vg) levels in intact (INT) and pinealectomized (Px) female catfish, C. batrachus, during preparatory (April), prespawning (May and June), spawning (July) and post-spawning (September) periods. Px (saline control groups) caused a stimulatory effect during preparatory (with respect to Vg synthesis and incorporation) and prespawning (with respect to Vg synthesis) periods whereas no effect was observed during spawning and post-spawning periods with respect to the reproductive parameters studied. During April, melatonin-treatment significantly decreased plasma GtH II levels and percentage of vitellogenic oocytes without any significant changes in plasma Vg levels and gonadosomatic index (GSI). During early prespawning period, in May, 50microg melatonin brought about a significant reduction in plasma GtH II levels in INT group, whereas 100microg caused a decrease in all parameters; on the other hand, in Px groups both dose levels proved to be inhibitory. In June (late prespawning period) melatonin-treatment could not bring about any change in GSI and plasma Vg levels compared to the control groups regardless of Px but plasma GtH II and mean number of yolky oocytes were significantly reduced in melatonin-treated INT group. During spawning period (July) melatonin inhibited the GSI, mean number of yolky oocytes and plasma GtH II levels without affecting plasma Vg levels. In September (post-spawning period), melatonin did inhibit both GSI and plasma GtH II levels. The results, thus, indicate that melatonin showed variable effects (inhibitory and/or no effect) to GSI, mean number of yolky oocytes and plasma Vg levels but a consistent inhibiton of plasma GtH II levels indicating that melatonin may control the reproduction by blocking the GtH II release from the pituitary via affecting the hypothalamo-hypophysial axis.  相似文献

Short periods of light or no light (18D : 06L and 24D : 00L) resulted in an increased growth compared to extended periods of light (06D : 18L and 12D : 12L) in African catfish Clarias gariepinus . Fish under longer periods of light (12D : 12L and 18D : 06L) showed higher swimming activity, more aggression (injuries on the body) and higher lactate, free fatty acids and cortisol levels compared to those who were reared at shorter periods of light (24D : 00L and 18D : 06L). Feeding activity during light and dark periods in this experiment showed that C. gariepinus had both night and day feeding activities, with a preference to diurnal feeding in the 12D : 12L photoperiod. The results showed that light plays an important role in the African catfish behaviour and its well‐being. As the hours of light increased during the 24 h cycle, data suggests that the fish were more stressed and aggressive, compared to those under a reduced number of light hours.  相似文献
