The introduction of Eulemur fulvus in 1975 into the Berenty Reserve and their recent attainment of population densities comparable to those of Lemur catta led us to analyze food partitioning among the 3 large prosimian species in the gallery forest. We assessed the diets of ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus) and sifakas (Propithecus verreauxi) from food intake measurements during 3 successive short-term studies. All species exhibited marked seasonal changes in their major food categories. Dietary overlap was very high between ring-tailed lemurs and brown lemurs during 2 of 3 seasons, including the middle of the dry season. During the latter period, Eulemur appeared to compensate for a low quality diet by increasing the amount of food eaten. In contrast, Lemur fed on lower amounts of food and seemed more efficient at coping with fibrous plant materials. There is low dietary overlap of Lemur catta and Eulemur fulvus versus Propithecus, which exhibit by far the highest dietary diversity of the 3 species. We discuss sustainable coexistence among them, based on respective dietary adaptations and potential for dietary flexibility. 相似文献

Hybridization of highly repeated DNA sequences ofEulemur fulvus mayottensis, Lemur catta, andVarecia has been performed on blots of different species of Lemuridae (L. catta, Hapalemur griseus, Varecia variegata variegata, V. v. rubra, E. macaco macaco, E. coronatus, E. mongoz, andE. rubriventer). The probe ofE. fulvus only hybridized with the differentEulemur species, whereas that ofVarecia hybridized with the two subspecies ofVarecia and that ofL. catta with bothL. catta andHapalemur. These results were used to confirm the classification ofVarecia in a separate genus and to review the separation of theL. catta/Hapalemur group from the other species ofEulemur. Comparison of the migration patterns from DNA fragments of these different species has been used to propose a cladogram
of the differentEulemur species. 相似文献

The feeding behavior of two sympatric species of lemurs, Lemur cattaand Lemur fulvus, was studied in an enclosure simulating a natural habitat at the Duke University Primate Center. L. fulvusspent less time feeding during the day than L. catta. But the former species ate more fruit and had longer feeding bouts on preferred food items than L. catta. They also had a shorter food passage time than L. cattaand their choice of resting places was more influenced by food distribution. Furthermore, the two lemur species ate parts
of different plant species and showed different reactions to chemical plant components. According to these results, L. fulvusis a more conservative feeder than L. catta. These interspecific differences in feeding behavior may be one of a number of differences that allow the two species to coexist.
In allopatry, however, L. fulvusmay also adopt feeding patterns similar to those of L. catta. But L. cattawas never found to change its feeding strategies in different areas. It may be this option of L. fulvusto adopt different feeding strategies in different situations that allows this species to have the widest range of all Malagasy
lemurs.

An adult femaleLemur catta and an adult femaleEulemur fulvus were given edible rewards for scratching. Both subjects learned to scratch in order to obtain the rewards, showed diminished
rates of scratching during periods of extinction, and learned to scratch preferentially with one foot when required. TheLemur catta subject was more responsive to the changing experimental conditions than theEulemur fulvus. The conditionability of scratching in primates does not appear to be directly related to the widespread occurrence of scratching
in simian social contexts. 相似文献

Most lemurs yet studied in detail exhibit some mode of adult female social dominance over males. The known exception, a brown lemur subspecies known as rufous or redfronted lemurs (Eulemur fulvus rufus), forms multimale–multifemale social groups within which unambiguous dominance relations are not observed among adults. Resting groups of redfronted lemurs consistently include huddling adult male–female pairs whose males selectively scentmark and rub their heads in the scentmarks of their female huddling partners. Quantitative observations confirmed that some of these male–female pairs maintain special relationships satisfying all criteria originally developed in research on cercopithecine monkeys. Observations before, during, and after mating season, intergroup encounters, male transfers, and changes in male–female affiliations illuminated developmental and functional aspects of male–female partnerships. Each adult female in two semi-free-ranging study groups shared high rates of association, grooming, and agonistic support and low rates of agonistic interaction with one unrelated or distantly related adult male partner. Such affinity characterized small proportions of adult male–female relationships. Several males directed not only support but also aggression toward adult females with whom they sought to affiliate. All bonded males sought to copulate with their partners, and some appeared to ignore estrus in nonpartners. All females accepted copulation attempts from partners and some seemed to prefer their partners as mates. Partial synchronization of brief estrus periods together with concealed ovulation appeared to minimize chances for polygynous mating. Results support the view that the male–female pair is the fundamental social unit of E. fulvus and suggest that female partnership with individual males obviates dominance behavior, including female dominance, in this lemurid primate. We used random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) to determine paternity in two groups of brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus mayottensis). We analyzed the results in relation to behavioral data on observed copulations, dominance relationships among adult males, and female behavior. The association between paternity determination and behavioral sampling shows that paternity determination is a crucial tool for understanding the mating strategies and reproductive success in the studied species. In brown lemurs, dominance relationships between males are correlated with reproductive success, but male social dominance could be altered by female choice as suggested by the ability of subordinate males to sire offspring in the presence of a dominant male. 相似文献

Primate social grouping is understood as an adaptive strategy for mitigating environmental selection pressures, but the relative importance of various pressures may vary. Physiological measures of well-being can show their short-term impacts and suggest their relative importance and capacity to provide ultimate or proximate control of group size. I examined correlations between pressures commonly proposed as causes of social grouping (foraging success, intergroup and intragroup agonism, and predation risk) and individual levels of fecal cortisol, a hormonal stress measure, in a free-ranging population of Lemur catta. I collected behavioral data on 45 female Lemur catta at Berenty Reserve, Madagascar, over 3 seasons (August 1999-July 2000) and determined individual cortisol levels from 474 fecal samples. Neither predator alarm rates nor intragroup agonism rates correlated with cortisol levels in any season. However, females with low daily food intake and high rates of escalated intergroup defense exhibited higher cortisol levels. The data suggest that acquisition and defense of food resources are principal challenges in Lemur catta, and may be important factors determining social grouping and other behavioral or life history adaptations. 相似文献

From long-term studies of a number of anthropoid species, many investigators have shown that kinship affinities affect social
relationships. Factors such as proximity, social grooming, dominance rank, and mating patterns have been shown to be related
to kinship. In this paper, we report the results of a preliminary study of the social organization of a group of prosimians
(Lemur catta) in which individuals were identified and kinship affinities were known. We found that close matrilineal kin preferred to
groom one another and to remain in close proximity more than did nonkin and distantly related animals. Furthermore, no copulations
were observed within matrilines. These results are similar to those found in a number of species of anthropoids. This research
was conducted on a semi-free-ranging group at the Duke University Primate Facility, Durham, North Carolina. 相似文献

Researchers studying individual variation in conspicuous skin coloration in primates have suggested that color indicates male
quality. Although primate fur color can also be flamboyant, the potential condition dependence and thus signaling function
of fur remains poorly studied. We studied sources of variation in sexually dichromatic facial hair coloration in red-fronted
lemurs (Eulemur fulvus rufus). We collected data on 13 adult males in Kirindy Forest, Madagascar, during two study periods in 2006 and 2007, to determine
whether variation in facial hair coloration correlates with male age, rank, androgen status, and reproductive success. We
quantified facial hair coloration via standardized digital photographs of each male, assessed androgen status using fecal
hormone measurements, and obtained data on reproductive success through genetic paternity analyses. Male facial hair coloration
showed high individual variation, and baseline coloration was related to individual androgen status but not to any other parameter
tested. Color did not reflect rapid androgen changes during the mating season. However, pronounced long-term changes in androgen
levels between years were accompanied by changes in facial hair coloration. Our data suggest that facial hair coloration in
red-fronted lemur males is under proximate control of androgens and may provide some information about male quality, but it
does not correlate with dominance rank or male reproductive success. 相似文献

Coordination of primate group movements by individual group members is generally categorized as leadership behavior, which entails several steps: deciding where to move next, initiating travel, and leading a group between food, water sources, and rest sites. Presumably, leaders are able to influence their daily foraging efficiency and nutritional intake, which could influence an individual's feeding ecology and long-term reproductive success. Within anthropoid species, females lead group movements in most female-bonded groups, while males lead groups in most nonfemale-bonded groups. Group leadership has not been described for social prosimians, which are typically not female-bonded. We describe group movements in two nonfemale-bonded, lemurid species living in southeastern Madagascar, Propithecus diadema edwardsi and Eulemur fulvus rufus. Although several social lemurids exhibit female dominance Eulemur fulvus rufus does not, and evidence for female dominance is equivocal in Propithecus diadema edwardsi. Given the ecological stresses that females face during reproduction, we predict that females in these two species will implement alternative behavioral strategies such as group leadership in conjunction with, or in the absence of, dominance interactions to improve access to food. We found that females in both species initiated and led group movements significantly more often than males did. In groups with multiple females, one female was primarily responsible for initiating and leading group movements. We conclude that female nutritional needs may determine ranging behavior to a large extent in these prosimian species, at least during months of gestation and lactation. 相似文献

Chromosome studies have been conducted in Lemur catta, L. macaco, L. mongoz, L. fulvus fulvus, and a hybrid L. fulvus fulvus x L. fulvus albifrons. Comparative analysis shows that inter- and intraspecific chromosome variability is a common finding in Lemurs. The Lemuridae are divided into three groups according to the characteristics of their chromosome complement. A reclassification of L. catta with the Hapalemurs is suggested, based on chromosomal and nonchromosomal data. 相似文献

Male displacement of copulatory (sperm) plugs from female vaginas provides further evidence for sperm competition in ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), a gregarious prosimian species with a multimale, multifemale mating system. During two mating seasons, I studied two groups of free-ranging ring-tailed lemurs on St. Catherines Island, GA, USA. I observed 22 mating pairs in which males achieved penile intromission. Copulatory plug displacement by males occurred in 9 cases. Plugs were displaced during copulation by male penes upon withdrawl following deep vaginal thrusting. In every case of copulatory plug displacement, the male displacing a plug mated to ejaculation with the estrous female. In a mating system in which females typically mate with more than one male during estrous, often in succession, copulatory plug displacement may function to disrupt or preclude other males' successful insemination of estrous females. The effects of sperm plug displacement on paternity in Lemur catta are unknown, as no study had heretofore documented copulatory plug displacement in this species. The first-male mating advantage suggested for Lemur catta should be re-evaluated where mating order is known, and copulatory plug displacement during mating, or lack thereof, is identified. Because there is a tendency for first-mating males to mate-guard for longer periods of time in Lemur catta, the latency period between the first mate's ejaculation and that of subsequent mates may be an important determinant of male fertilization success. 相似文献

In group‐living species with male dominance hierarchies where receptive periods of females do not overlap, high male reproductive skew would be predicted. However, the existence of female multiple mating and alternative male mating strategies can call into question single‐male monopolization of paternity in groups. Ring‐tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) are seasonally breeding primates that live in multi‐male, multi‐female groups. Although established groups show male dominance hierarchies, male dominance relationships can break down during mating periods. In addition, females are the dominant sex and mate with multiple males during estrus, including group residents, and extra‐group males—posing the question of whether there is high or low male paternity skew in groups. In this study, we analyzed paternity in a population of wild L. catta from the Bezà Mahafaly Special Reserve in southwestern Madagascar. Paternity was determined with 80–95% confidence for 39 offspring born to nine different groups. We calculated male reproductive skew indices for six groups, and our results showed a range of values corresponding to both high and low reproductive skew. Between 21% and 33% of offspring (3 of 14 or three of nine, counting paternity assignments at the 80% or 95% confidence levels, respectively) were sired by extra‐troop males. Males siring offspring within the same group during the same year appear to be unrelated. Our study provides evidence of varying male reproductive skew in different L. catta groups. A single male may monopolize paternity across one or more years, while in other groups, >1 male can sire offspring within the same group, even within a single year. Extra‐group mating is a viable strategy that can result in extra‐group paternity for L. catta males. 相似文献

Lemur catta shares a male-biased dispersal pattern with most primate species and the majority of mammals. Individuals in a free-ranging
population of ringtailed lemurs were captured, marked, released, and monitored for a 40-month period. Sixty-four percent of
the males (43 of 67) migrated or were missing within this period and all nine censused groups were affected by migration.
Males migrate from their natal group and then may migrate again after reaching full adult body weight. Full-sized adult males
migrate at a rate of 0.28 per year or once every 3.5 years and may change groups a number of times during their life. Migrations
occurred within a 6-month period, ending just after the mating season. However, there is no direct connection between mating
success and male migration. Females mate with transferring males, with group males, and with visitors from adjacent groups.
The age-related pattern of male migration and the occurrence of extragroup mating inLemur catta is similar to that described for several species of macaques. 相似文献

The influence of social status, reproductive and agonistic contexts and environmental change on scent-marking and allomarking rates were studied in captive groups of Lemur fulvus and Lemur macaco. No evidence of female social dominance over males appeared in either species. In L. fulvus, intrasexual relationships were characterized by the dominance of one adult male over another and by the existence of female affiliative association ('central' vs. 'peripheral' females). In L. macaco, no intrasexual dominance relationships were apparent except for a brief ostracism of one female. In both species, (1) intrasexual differences in social status were related to differences in marking rates, (2) no direct relation appeared between marking rates and aggression or reproduction, (3) allomarking was not differentially directed towards specific individuals and (4) physical environmental factors clearly influenced scent-marking and allomarking rates. These results are discussed in relation to the possible functions of marking behaviour in intragroup relations. 相似文献

The systematic position of the extinctPachylemur insignis has been controversial: some authors consideredPachylemur as a lemur, whereas others viewed it closer toVarecia. Its classification in the genusLemur orVarecia thus remained an open question. DNA extraction from subfossil bones, using a non-destructive method, allowed us to obtain
enough material to make a Southern blot. The hybridization ofPachylemur withEulemur fulvus, Lemur catta, andVarecia variegata highly repeated DNA probes showed that only theVarecia probe gave a positive signal on hybridization on thePachylemur blot. These results indicate thatPachylemur must be considered closer to the genusVarecia than toEulemur andLemur. 相似文献

Olfaction plays an important role in the social communication of all prosimians. (The experiment reported in this paper forms
part of an intensive chemobehavioral study of olfaction in Lemur catta (ring-tailed lemur) being carried out in this laboratory.) Five male Lemur cattawere tested on their behavioral responses to paired scent stimuli. Responses measured were (1) total investigation time, (2)
arm-marking, (3) ABO/BO rubbing, and (4) flehmen. Males showed a strong discrimination between the scent stimuli, giving higher levels of response to female scent on measures 1, 3, and 4. This response suggests an olfactory-related preference
by males for female scent under controlled conditions. This preference may be a consequence of the females’ dominance over
males and the brevity of estrus in L. catta, both of which would favor such choice behavior. 相似文献

The olfactory behavior of a captive population of crowned lemurs (Lemur coronatus)was studied during their annual breeding season in order to investigate its possible role in the fine-tuning of mating synchrony
after photoperiodic initiation of reproductive activity. The frequencies of five stereotyped olfactory behavior patterns were
recorded in four male-female groups during 315 1-hr observation sessions between October and March. The mean total scent-marking
frequency of all males was positively correlated with their mean testicular size. Male anogenital-, head-, and allomarking
frequencies decreased during the breeding season, whereas hand-marking frequencies remained constant. Male head-marking increased
significantly in the 5 days preceding female vaginal estrus. Furthermore, males responded to many female scents by olfactory
investigation and/or overmarking, whereas females never showed an observable behavioral response to male scent marks. The
marking frequencies of two females did not change significantly during the breeding season, while those of two others decreased
significantly. These results suggest qualitative changes of female scents during estrus and a less important role of male
scents in intersexual communication in the context of reproduction than previously thought. 相似文献

The karyotype of Propithecus verreauxi coquereli isdescribed in this report using G-, Q-, and C-banding and silver staining for nucleolus organizer regions. The banded chromosomes
of P. v. coquereli(family Indriidae) are compared with those of Lemur fulvus fulvus(family Lemuridae), revealing few karyotypic similarities between the two groups and suggesting a wellestablished phylogenetic
divergence between these families. 相似文献
