The effects of high atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on ecosystem processes have been explored using temporal facilities such as open-top-chambers and free-air CO2 enrichment. However, the effects of high [CO2] on soil properties takes decades and may not be captured by short-term experiments. Natural CO2 springs provide a unique opportunity to study the long-term effects of high [CO2]. In this study, we investigated soil properties at a natural CO2 spring. We found that the amounts of total carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stored in the soil at the high [CO2] site exceeded those in the reference site by 60 and 30%, respectively. The effects of high [CO2] were large in the upper slope position where the canopy openness was high and plants grew faster, but no effects were detected in the lowest position where the canopy openness was lower (half of that at the upper slope position). In contrast, effects of high [CO2] on soil N dynamics, such as N mineralization and nitrification rates, did not exhibit a slope gradient. This suggests that effects of high [CO2] differed among soil stoichiometric characteristics and N dynamics. These complicated effects of high [CO2] imply that the future effects of high [CO2] on ecosystems could vary widely in conjunction with environmental conditions such as light availability and/or topographic conditions.  相似文献

Profiles of subsurface soil CO2 concentration, soil temperature, and soil moisture, and throughfall were measured continuously during the years 2005 and 2006 in 16 locations at the free air CO2 enrichment facility situated within a temperate loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stand. Sampling at these locations followed a 4 by 4 replicated experimental design comprised of two atmospheric CO2 concentration levels (ambient [CO2]a, ambient + 200 ppmv, [CO2]e) and two soil nitrogen (N) deposition levels (ambient, ambient + fertilization at 11.2 gN m−2 year−1). The combination of these measurements permitted indirect estimation of belowground CO2 production and flux profiles in the mineral soil. Adjacent to the soil CO2 profiles, direct (chamber-based) measurements of CO2 fluxes from the soil–litter complex were simultaneously conducted using the automated carbon efflux system. Based on the measured soil CO2 profiles, neither [CO2]e nor N fertilization had a statistically significant effect on seasonal soil CO2, CO2 production, and effluxes from the mineral soil over the study period. Soil moisture and temperature had different effects on CO2 concentration depending on the depth. Variations in CO2 were mostly explained by soil temperature at deeper soil layers, while water content was an important driver at the surface (within the first 10 cm), where CO2 pulses were induced by rainfall events. The soil effluxes were equal to the CO2 production for most of the time, suggesting that the site reached near steady-state conditions. The fluxes estimated from the CO2 profiles were highly correlated to the direct measurements when the soil was neither very dry nor very wet. This suggests that a better parameterization of the soil CO2 diffusivity is required for these soil moisture extremes.  相似文献

CO2 exchange components of a temperate semi-desert sand grassland ecosystem in Hungary were measured 21 times in 2000–2001 using a closed IRGA system. Stand CO2 uptake and release, soil respiration rate (R s), and micrometeorological values were determined with two types of closed system chambers to investigate the daily courses of gas exchange. The maximum CO2 uptake and release were –3.240 and 1.903 mol m–2 s–1, respectively, indicating a relatively low carbon sequestration potential. The maximum and the minimum R s were 1.470 and 0.226 mol(CO2) m–2 s–1, respectively. Water shortage was probably more effective in decreasing photosynthetic rates than R s, indicating water supply as the primary driving variable for the sink-source relations in this ecosystem type.  相似文献

Leaf area index (LAI) and its seasonal dynamics are key determinants of terrestrial productivity and, therefore, of the response of ecosystems to a rising atmospheric CO2 concentration. Despite the central importance of LAI, there is very little evidence from which to assess how forest LAI will respond to increasing [CO2]. We assessed LAI and related leaf indices of a closed-canopy deciduous forest for 4 years in 25-m-diameter plots that were exposed to ambient or elevated CO2 (542 ppm) in a free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment. LAI of this Liquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum) stand was about 6 and was relatively constant year-to-year, including the 2 years prior to the onset of CO2 treatment. LAI throughout the 1999–2002 growing seasons was assessed through a combination of data on photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) transmittance, mass of litter collected in traps, and leaf mass per unit area (LMA). There was no effect of [CO2] on any expression of leaf area, including peak LAI, average LAI, or leaf area duration. Canopy mass and LMA, however, were significantly increased by CO2 enrichment. The hypothesized connection between light compensation point (LCP) and LAI was rejected because LCP was reduced by [CO2] enrichment only in leaves under full sun, but not in shaded leaves. Data on PAR interception also permitted calculation of absorbed PAR (APAR) and light use efficiency (LUE), which are key parameters connecting satellite assessments of terrestrial productivity with ecosystem models of future productivity. There was no effect of [CO2] on APAR, and the observed increase in net primary productivity in elevated [CO2] was ascribed to an increase in LUE, which ranged from 1.4 to 2.4 g MJ–1. The current evidence seems convincing that LAI of non-expanding forest stands will not be different in a future CO2-enriched atmosphere and that increases in LUE and productivity in elevated [CO2] are driven primarily by functional responses rather than by structural changes. Ecosystem or regional models that incorporate feedbacks on resource use through LAI should not assume that LAI will increase with CO2 enrichment of the atmosphere.  相似文献

We studied the temporal sequence of changes in the photosynthetic CO2/H2O gas exchange intensity, as well as leaf water status, contents of soluble carbohydrates, starch, proline, pigments, and MDA, in maize seedlings (Zea mays L., cv. Luchistaya) under adaptation to increasing water deficit. The duration of drought was 2, 3, 5, and 6 days. Withholding water from maize plants caused gradual increase in the intensity of water deficit: from mild (2 or 3 days) to moderate (5 days) and nearly severe (6 days) water stress. After 6 days, relative leaf water content decreased by 19.8% as compared to the control. On the second day after the onset of drought, slight reduction in the photosynthetic CO2/H2O gas exchange intensity of the treated plants was observed. After 6 days, photosynthesis and transpiration of leaves synchronously reduced almost threefold due to stomatal closure. The progressive soil drought had substantial impact on the carbohydrate metabolism. After 2 days of water deficit, the content of reducing sugars and sucrose increased slightly, whereas after 6 days, it increased ten and four times, respectively. After 2, 3, and 5 days of drought, the starch content declined slightly; however, under severe drought (6 days), it increased by 30% as compared to the control. Simultaneously with the increase in the content of soluble sugars, proline content increased significantly and it was the highest on the sixth day of drought. At all stages of water deficit, the proline content increased more significantly than the content of reducing carbohydrates and sucrose. Under increasing water deficit (5 and 6 days), the content of MDA was found to rise. At the initial drought stage (2 or 3 days) and under severe water deficit (6 days), no significant changes in the pigment content were observed. Thus, at the initial stages of progressive drought, in the leaves of this maize cultivar, a decline in photosynthetic activity proceeded simultaneously with accumulation of reducing sugars, sucrose, and proline. The results obtained showed that, at the first stages of adaptation of maize seedlings to drought, the changes in carbohydrate and proline metabolism have been observed, which have increased upon further plant dehydration.  相似文献

Climate change is significantly altering rainfall patterns globally and will likely cause increases in extreme rainfall events. Grassland systems are particularly vulnerable to these changes as their productivity is strongly mediated by soil water content (SWC). SWC mean and variability are driven by the amount of rainfall received as well as the distribution through time of that rainfall. In this study, we used a model grassland system in a controlled glasshouse experiment to identify whether SWC mean or variability is a stronger driver of productivity. We then examined how extreme rainfall events alter this driver and the resulting effect this has on productivity and biomass allocation under ambient and elevated carbon dioxide (CO2). Rainfall amount was held constant, but distribution through time varied (control, one in 20 years event, one in 100 years event). SWC variability was a stronger driver of productivity (mesocosm biomass) than SWC mean, with increasing extreme rainfall event magnitude resulting in greater SWC variability. Surprisingly, elevated CO2 only had a small effect on these productivity and biomass allocation responses which may be due to the relatively small CO2 difference tested. Our results suggest that distribution of rainfall in time is an important driver of grassland productivity and that increases in extreme rainfall events, for a given total rainfall, will result in reduced grassland productivity.  相似文献

Several studies have shown improved soil stability under elevated atmospheric CO2 caused by increased plant and microbial biomass. These studies have not quantified the mechanisms responsible for soil stabilisation or the effect on water relations. The objective of this study was to assess changes in water repellency under elevated CO2. We hypothesised that increased plant biomass will drive an increase in water repellency, either directly or through secondary microbial processes. Barley plants were grown at ambient (360 ppm) and elevated (720 ppm) CO2 concentrations in controlled chambers. Each plant was grown in a separate tube of 1.2 m length constructed from 22 mm depth × 47 mm width plastic conduit trunk and packed with sieved arable soil to 55% porosity. After 10 weeks growth the soil was dried at 40°C before measuring water sorptivity, ethanol sorptivity and repellency at many depths with a 0.14 mm radius microinfiltrometer. This provided a microscale measure of the capacity of soil to rewet after severe drying. At testing roots extended throughout the depth of the soil in the tube. The depth of the measurement had no effect on sorptivity or repellency. A rise in CO2 resulted in a decrease in water sorptivity from 1.13 ± 0.06 (s.e) mm s−1/2 to 1.00 ± 0.05 mm s−1/2 (P < 0.05) and an increase in water repellency from 1.80 ± 0.09 to 2.07 ± 0.08 (P < 0.05). Ethanol sorptivity was not affected by CO2 concentration, suggesting a similar pore structure. Repellency was therefore the primary cause of decreased water sorptivity. The implications will be both positive and negative, with repellency potentially increasing soil stability but also causing patchier wetting of the root-zone.  相似文献

CO<Subscript>2</Subscript> bio-mitigation using microalgae   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Microalgae are a group of unicellular or simple multicellular photosynthetic microorganisms that can fix CO(2) efficiently from different sources, including the atmosphere, industrial exhaust gases, and soluble carbonate salts. Combination of CO(2) fixation, biofuel production, and wastewater treatment may provide a very promising alternative to current CO(2) mitigation strategies.  相似文献

CO2 efflux (ECO2) from stems and branches is highly variable within trees. To investigate the mechanisms underlying the temporal dynamics and vertical variations in ECO2, we measured the stem ECO2 by infrared gas analysis (IRGA) and meteorological conditions at 10 different heights from 0.1 to 3.7 m aboveground on two consecutive days every month for 1 year in six Styphnolobium japonicum trees with a similar size. The results indicated that the seasonal change in ECO2 roughly followed the seasonal variations in woody tissue temperature (TW) and stem radial diameter increment (Di). Together, TW and Di explained the monthly change in ECO2, and the contributions of TW and Di changed with the stem positions and growth stages. The diurnal patterns of ECO2 differed greatly between the growing and dormant season, showing a bimodal distribution with an obvious midday depression in the former and a unimodal distribution in the latter. The strong vertical variation in the day-time ECO2 of the growing season was mainly caused by the vertical gradients of TW, Di and difference in sapwood volume per unit of the stem surface along the trunk. The temperature-sensitivity coefficient (Q10) was not constant, as assumed in some models, but was instead vertically altered and highly dependent on the measurement temperature. For all stem positions, the highest Q10 value appeared at approximately 5?°C, and both higher and lower temperatures decreased Q10. Our study demonstrated that application of a constant Q10 would cause an estimation error when scaling up chamber-based measurements to annual carbon budgets at the whole-stem level.  相似文献

Do short-term fluctuations in CO2 concentrations at elevated CO2 levels affect net CO2 uptake rates of plants? When exposed to 600 μl CO2 l?1, net CO2 uptake rates in shoots or leaves of seedlings of two tropical C3 tree species, teak (Tectona grandis L. f.) and barrigon [Pseudobombax septenatum (Jacq.) Dug.], increased by 28 and 52% respectively. In the presence of oscillations with half-cycles of 20 s, amplitude of ca. 170 μl CO2 l?1 and mean of 600 μl CO2 l?1, the stimulation in net CO2 uptake by the two species was reduced to 19 and 36%, respectively, i.e. the CO2 stimulation in photosynthesis associated with a change in exposure from 370 to 600 μl CO2 l?1 was reduced by a third in both species. Similar reductions in CO2-stimulated net CO2 uptake were observed in T. grandis exposed to 40-s oscillations. Rates of CO2 efflux in the dark by whole shoots of T. grandis decreased by 4.8% upon exposure of plants grown at 370 μl CO2 l?1 to 600 μl CO2 l?1. The potential implications of the observations on CO2 oscillations and dark respiration are discussed in the context of free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) systems in which short-term fluctuations of CO2 concentration are a common feature.  相似文献

Respiration rates are reported to increase exponentially with temperature. Respiration rates of woody tissues are commonly measured as CO2 efflux rates () from that tissue. However, this paper describes clear variations in stem that were not related to temperature for the case of a young beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and oak (Quercus robur L.) tree during the dormant season. The CO2 concentration ([CO2]) in the xylem of the beech tree showed similar temperature-independent variations. The trees were grown in a growth chamber in which radiation patterns and temperature were kept constant. was measured with an IRGA connected to cuvettes surrounding a stem segment. Xylem [CO2] was measured in situ using a CO2 microelectrode. Depressions in and [CO2] occurred during the light period, despite equal temperatures in the light and dark period. Explanations found in literature for discrepancies in the exponential relationship between temperature and are the influence of (1) sap flow or (2) decreased cell water content. However, (1) the variations were observed in the dormant season, when no sap flow was observed yet, and (2) reduced cell water content was not likely to be apparent as differences in stem transpiration rates between the dark and light period were not significant. Hence, previously formulated theories failed to explain our results. This work therefore provides a new ground for discussion on other possible causes of daytime depressions in . One might be the refixation of respired CO2 by corticular photosynthesis in the stem parts adjacent to the stem segment enclosed by the cuvette.  相似文献

Introduction

The rising atmospheric CO2 level is continuously driving the dissolution of more CO2 into the oceans, and some emission scenarios project that the surface waters may reach 1000 μatm by the end of the century. It is not known if fish can detect moderately elevated CO2 levels, and if they avoid areas with high CO2. If so, avoidance behaviour to water with high CO2 could affect movement patterns and migrations of fish in the future. It is also being increasingly recognized that fish behaviour can be altered by exposure to CO2. Therefore this study investigated how long-term exposure to elevated pCO2 affects predator avoidance and CO2 avoidance in juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The fish were exposed to control water or CO2-enriched water (1000 μatm) for six weeks before being subjected to tests of behaviour.

Results

Despite long term exposure to elevated pCO2 the cod still strongly avoided the smell of a predator. These data are surprising because several coral reef fish have demonstrated reversal of olfactory responses after CO2 exposure, turning avoidance of predator cues into preference for predator cues. Fish from both treatment groups also demonstrated strong avoidance of CO2 when presented with the choice of control or CO2-acidified water, indicating that habituation to the CO2 sensory stimuli is negligible.

Conclusions

As Atlantic cod maintained normal behavioural responses to olfactory cues, they may be tolerant to CO2-induced behavioural changes. The results also suggest that despite the long-term exposure to CO2-acidified water, the fish still preferred the control water over CO2-acidified water. Therefore, in the future, fish may alter their movements and migrations in search of waters with a lower CO2 content.

Tropical peatlands release significant quantities of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, yet the relative contributions of heterotrophic and autotrophic respiration to net CO2 fluxes remains sparsely quantified. We used a combination of in situ trenching and vegetation removal in ex situ pots to quantify root-derived CO2 under two plant functional types within a mixed species forest. Trenching significantly reduced surface CO2 flux, indicating that approximately two-thirds of the released CO2 was derived from roots. In contrast, ex situ vegetation removal in pots indicated that root-derived CO2 accounted for 27% of the total CO2 flux for Campnosperma panamensis, a broadleaved evergreen tree, and 49% for Raphia taedigera, a canopy palm. The results show that root-derived CO2 is a major contribution to net CO2 emissions in tropical peatlands, and that the magnitude of the emissions is affected by plant species composition. This is important in the context of land use change driving alterations in vegetation cover.  相似文献

Increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere or continuous nitrogen (N) deposition might alter the carbon (C) cycle in boreal mires and thus have significant impacts on the development of climate change. The atmospheric impact of the C cycle in mires is twofold: C accumulation attenuates and CH4 release strengthens the natural greenhouse effect. We studied the effects of an increased supply of CO2 or NH4NO3 on the vegetation and annual CO2 exchange in lawns of a boreal oligotrophic mire in eastern Finland over a 2-year period. Ten study plots were enclosed with mini-FACE (Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment) rings. Five plots were vented with CO2-enriched air (target 560 ppmv), while their controls were vented with ambient air; five plots were sprayed with NH4NO3, corresponding to a cumulative addition of 3 g N m−2 a−1, while their controls were sprayed with distilled water only. A raised NH4NO3 supply seemed to affect the composition of the moss layer. Raised CO2 did not affect the vegetation, but gross photosynthesis increased significantly. The change in net CO2 exchange depended on the annual weather conditions. Our results suggest that C accumulation may increase in wet years and compensate for the warming effect caused by the increase in CH4 release from this mire. In contrast, a relatively dry and warm growing period favors decomposition and can even make the CO2 balance negative. Along with the increased CH4 release under raised CO2, the decreased C accumulation then increases the radiative forcing of boreal mires. Received 22 October 2001; accepted 13 May 2002.  相似文献

Subsidies are donor-controlled inputs of nutrients and energy that can affect ecosystem-level processes in a recipient environment. Lake ecosystems receive large inputs of terrestrial carbon (C) in the form of dissolved organic matter (DOM). DOM inputs may energetically subsidize heterotrophic bacteria and determine whether lakes function as sources or sinks of atmospheric CO2. I experimentally tested this hypothesis using a series of mesocosm experiments in New England lakes. In the first experiment, I observed that CO2 flux increased by 160% 4 days following a 1,000 m C addition in the form of DOM. However, this response was relatively short lived, as there was no effect of DOM enrichment on CO2 flux beyond 8 days. In a second experiment, I demonstrated that peak CO2 flux from mesocosms in two lakes increased linearly over a broad DOM gradient (slope for both lakes=0.02±0.001 mm CO2·m–2 day–1 per m DOC, mean±SE). Concomitant changes in bacterial productivity and dissolved oxygen strengthen the inference that increasing CO2 flux resulted from the metabolism of DOM. I conducted two additional studies to test whether DOM-correlated attributes were responsible for the observed change in plankton metabolism along the subsidy gradient. First, terrestrial DOM reduced light transmittance, but experimental shading revealed that this was not responsible for the observed patterns of CO2 flux. Second, organically bound nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) accompanied DOM inputs, but experimental nutrient additions (without organic C) caused mesocosms to be satuated with CO2. Together, these results suggest that C content of terrestrial DOM may be an important subsidy for freshwater bacteria that can influence whether recipient aquatic ecosystems are sources or sinks of atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

We describe the long-term effects of a CO2 exhalation, created more than 70 years ago, on a natural C4 dominated sub-tropical grassland in terms of ecosystem structure and functioning. We tested whether long-term CO2 enrichment changes the competitive balance between plants with C3 and C4 photosynthetic pathways and how CO2 enrichment has affected species composition, plant growth responses, leaf properties and soil nutrient, carbon and water dynamics. Long-term effects of elevated CO2 on plant community composition and system processes in this sub-tropical grassland indicate very subtle changes in ecosystem functioning and no changes in species composition and dominance which could be ascribed to elevated CO2 alone. Species compositional data and soil δ13C isotopic evidence suggest no detectable effect of CO2 enrichment on C3:C4 plant mixtures and individual species dominance. Contrary to many general predictions C3 grasses did not become more abundant and C3 shrubs and trees did not invade the site. No season length stimulation of plant growth was found even after 5 years of exposure to CO2 concentrations averaging 610 μmol mol−1. Leaf properties such as total N decreased in the C3 but not C4 grass under elevated CO2 while total non-structural carbohydrate accumulation was not affected. Elevated CO2 possibly lead to increased end-of-season soil water contents and this result agrees with earlier studies despite the topographic water gradient being a confounding problem at our research site. Long-term CO2 enrichment also had little effect on soil carbon storage with no detectable changes in soil organic matter found. There were indications that potential soil respiration and N mineralization rates could be higher in soils close to the CO2 source. The conservative response of this grassland suggests that many of the reported effects of elevated CO2 on similar ecosystems could be short duration experimental artefacts that disappear under long-term elevated CO2 conditions.  相似文献

An experimental study has been carried out on the stability of adenine (one of the five nucleic acid bases) under hydrothermal conditions. The experiments were performed in sealed autoclaves at 300 degrees C under fugacities of CO(2), N(2) and H(2) supposedly representative of those in marine hydrothermal systems on the early Earth. The composition of the gas phase was obtained from the degradation of oxalic acid, sodium nitrite and ammonium chloride, and the oxidation of metallic iron. The results of the experiments indicate that after 200 h, adenine is still present in detectable concentration in the aqueous phase. In fact, the concentration of adenine does not seem to be decreasing after approximately 24 h, which suggests that an equilibrium state may have been established with the inorganic constituents of the hydrothermal fluid. Such a conclusion is corroborated by independent thermodynamic calculations.  相似文献

The chemistry induced by atmospheric pressure DC discharges above a water surface in CO(2)/N(2)/H(2)O mixtures was investigated. The gaseous mixtures studied represent a model prebiotic atmosphere of the Earth. The most remarkable changes in the chemical composition of the treated gas were the decomposition of CO(2) and the production of CO. The concentration of CO increased logarithmically with the increasing input energy density and an increasing initial concentration of CO(2) in the gas. The highest achieved concentration of CO was 4.0 +/- 0.6 vol. %. The production of CO was crucial for the synthesis of organic species, since reactions of CO with some reactive species generated in the plasma, e. g. H* or N* radicals, were probably the starting point in this synthesis. The presence of organic species (including the tentative identification of some amino acids) was demonstrated by the analysis of solid and liquid samples by high-performance liquid chromatography, infrared absorption spectroscopy and proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry. Formation of organic species in a completely inorganic CO(2)/N(2)/H(2)O atmosphere is a significant finding for the theory of the origins of life.  相似文献

Environmental factors that influence stomatal conductance (g s) interact through a complex network of signal transduction and have therefore highly interdependent effect. In the present study we examined how plant water status affects stomatal sensitivity to the change of CO2 concentration ([CO2]). We investigated the short-term dynamic of stomatal response to a sudden [CO2] increase (from 400 to 700 μmol(CO2) mol−1) in maize supplied with different amounts of water (resulting ψw = −0.35, −0.52 and −0.75 MPa). Gas exchange measurements were performed in short logging intervals and the response was monitored under two different levels of water vapour pressure deficit (VPD) of 1 and 2 kPa in order to observe the impact of air humidity. Generalized logistic curves were fitted to standardized stomatal response data, which enabled us to objectively estimate the level (relative decrease of g s) and the dynamics of the response.  相似文献

In sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) grown under controlled conditions and subjected to drought by withholding watering, net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) of attached leaves decreased as leaf water potential (Ψw) declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. Although g s decreased over the whole range of Ψw, nearly constant values in the intercellular CO2 concentrations (C i) were observed as Ψw decreased to −1.8 MPa, but C i increased as Ψw decreased further. Relative quantum yield, photochemical quenching, and the apparent quantum yield of photosynthesis decreased with water deficit, whereas non-photochemical quenching (qNP) increased progressively. A highly significant negative relationship between qNP and ATP content was observed. Water deficit did not alter the pyridine nucleotide concentration but decreased ATP content suggesting metabolic impairment. At a photon flux density of 550 μmol m−2 s−1, the allocation of electrons from photosystem (PS) 2 to O2 reduction was increased by 51 %, while the allocation to CO2 assimilation was diminished by 32 %, as Ψw declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. A significant linear relationship between mean P N and the rate of total linear electron transport was observed in well watered plants, the correlation becoming curvilinear when water deficit increased. The maximum quantum yield of PS2 was not affected by water deficit, whereas qP declined only at very severe stress and the excess photon energy was dissipated by increasing qNP indicating that a greater proportion of the energy was thermally dissipated. This accounted for the apparent down-regulation of PS2 and supported the protective role of qNP against photoinhibition in sunflower.  相似文献
