Gobies that are phylogenetically related or coexist in the same marine and estuarine systems often exhibit abiotic and/or biotic habitat segregation. Thus, it is possible that species of Gymnogobius inhabiting the same riverine estuaries also exhibit abiotic and/or biotic habitat segregation. The goal of this study was to determine the differences in abiotic and biotic habitat use between these species by sampling goby and host shrimps, and by examining the physical environments of the rivers where these species are found. The surveys of goby and host shrimps were conducted in the estuaries of the Saba and Ibo rivers, which drain into the Seto Inland Sea, a body of water that separates three of the four main islands of Japan. We used hand nets and shovels to collect goby and host shrimps, and measured median sediment particle size, elevation, and salinity at each site. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to assess the preferences in abiotic and biotic habitat use by the goby species. Median particle size, salinity, and elevation were used as the abiotic environmental predictors, whereas the presence/absence of host shrimps were re-organized into four categories consisting of “Upogebia major” only, “Nihonotrypaea japonica” only, “Upogebia major & Nihonotrypaea japonica,” and “Upogebia yokoyai,” which were used as the biotic environmental predictors. The GLMs demonstrated that median particle size had the largest influence of the abiotic variables, with goby species segregating according to differences in sediments; moreover, there was some evidence suggesting that the host and symbiont do not always correlate at the species level. Our results indicated that although there is some overlap in abiotic and biotic habitat use among the four species of Gymnogobius, the differences were broad enough to provide an explanatory mechanism as to how these species can coexist in the same river systems.  相似文献

The red seaweed Pyropia yezoensis has been demonstrated to be a novel resource for the production of high-quality agar. P. yezoensis is grown for the food industry in large-scale Japanese mariculture operations. However, discolored P. yezoensis is mostly discarded as an industrial waste, although it has some kind of utility values. Here, we evaluated the utility of discolored P. yezoensis as a resource for agar production. The quality of agar from the discolored seaweed was comparable to that from normal seaweed. In addition, as a distinguishing characteristic, agar yield was higher from discolored seaweeds than from normal types. Moreover, we successfully used agar from discolored P. yezoensis for bacterial plate media and DNA electrophoresis gels without agarose purification. Thus, our results demonstrate that discolored P. yezoensis is suitable for agar production and use in life science research. Diverting discolored P. yezoensis from disposal to agar production provides a solution to the current industrial waste problem in mariculture, as well as a secure source of agar for research purposes.  相似文献

Nucleated pearls are produced by molluscs of the Pinctada genus through the biomineralisation activity of the pearl sac tissue within the recipient oyster. The pearl sac originates from graft tissue taken from the donor oyster mantle and its functioning is crucial in determining key factors that impact pearl quality surface characteristics. The specific role of related gene regulation during gem biogenesis was unknown, so we analysed the expression profiles of eight genes encoding nacreous (PIF, MSI60, PERL1) or prismatic (SHEM5, PRISM, ASP, SHEM9) shell matrix proteins or both (CALC1) in the pearl sac (N?=?211) of Pinctada margaritifera during pearl biogenesis. The pearls and pearl sacs analysed were from a uniform experimental graft with sequential harvests at 3, 6 and 9 months post-grafting. Quality traits of the corresponding pearls were recorded: surface defects, surface deposits and overall quality grade. Results showed that (1) the first 3 months of culture seem crucial for pearl quality surface determination and (2) all the genes (SHEM5, PRISM, ASP, SHEM9) encoding proteins related to calcite layer formation were over-expressed in the pearl sacs that produced low pearl surface quality. Multivariate regression tree building clearly identified three genes implicated in pearl surface quality, SHEM9, ASP and PIF. SHEM9 and ASP were clearly implicated in low pearl quality, whereas PIF was implicated in high quality. Results could be used as biomarkers for genetic improvement of P. margaritifera pearl quality and constitute a novel perspective to understanding the molecular mechanism of pearl formation.  相似文献

The review deals with systematization and generalization of new information concerning the phylogenetic and functional diversity of prokaryotes involved in the methane cycle. Methane is mostly produced by methanogenic archaea, which are responsible for the terminal stage of organic matter decomposition in a number of anoxic ecotopes. Although phylogeny, physiology, and biochemistry of methanogens have been extensively studied, important discoveries were made recently. Thus, members of deep phylogenetic lineages within the Euryarchaeota phylum (Methanomassiliicoccales, “Candidatus Methanofastidiosa,” “Methanonatronarchaeia”) and even outside it (“Ca. Verstraetearchaeota” and “Ca. Bathyarchaeota”) were reported to carry out methyl-reducing methanogenesis. Moreover, evidence was obtained on aerobic methane production by marine heterotrophic bacteria, which demethylate polysaccharide esters of methylphosphonic acid. Methanotrophic microorganisms oxidize methane both aerobically and anaerobically, decreasing significantly the release of this greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. In the presence of oxygen methane is oxidized by methanotrophic members of Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria, as well as by Verrucomicrobia. Methanotrophic gammaproteobacteria have been recently revealed in hypoxic and even anoxic environments, where they probably oxidize methane either in a trophic consortium with oxygenic phototrophs and/or methylotrophs or using electron acceptors other than oxygen. Anaerobic methane oxidation has been known for a long time. Sulfat- and nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation carried out by the ANME archaea via reverse methanogenesis are the best studied processes. While metal-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation is considered possible, the mechanisms and agents responsible for this process have not been reliably identified. Intracellular oxygen production during nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation was shown for bacteria “Ca. Methylomirabilis oxyfera.” These findings stimulate interest in the processes and microorganisms of the methane cycle.  相似文献

The Kellwasser Crisis represents one of the most severe extinction events in the Phanerozoic. The ?umbera section (Moravo-Silesian Basin, Moravian Karst) spans the Upper rhenana to Palmatolepis minuta minuta (or younger) conodont zones and corresponds to the upper part of a carbonate ramp with material derived from shallower areas. A rich association of calcareous algae, cyanobacteria, and microproblematica, comprising renalcids (Izhella), Girvanella, Rectangulina cf. tortuosa, Rothpletzella, “solenoporaceans”, “Keega”-like microfossils, udoteacean alga Paralitanaia, volvocean and radiospherid calcispheres, palaeoberesellids, Umbellina bella, and Wetheredella, is similar in diversity to associations known from China, Australia, Canada, and Belgium. The ?umbera section represents a unique locality where changes in shallow-water biota at the Frasnian-Famennian boundary are well calibrated by detailed conodont biostratigraphy. We track in detail the evolution of shallow-water biota and the features that are often discussed in the context of “anachronistic” facies, such as flourishing microbial structures, enhanced early marine cementation, and flat-pebble conglomerates. Some features which could be indicative of environmental stress such as flat-pebble conglomerates developed during the Frasnian part of the Kellwasser Crisis (Upper rhenana to linguiformis Zones), whereas a renalcid boom started at the Frasnian-Famennian boundary.  相似文献

The Early/Middle Miocene (European Land Mammal Zone MN5) localities of Sandelzhausen and Rothenstein 13 in southern Germany have yielded remains of about 13 ophidian taxa: Eoanilius sp. (Aniliidae), Bavarioboa ultima (Boidae), “Coluber” sp., ?Telescopus sp., Natrix sp., cf. Natrix sp., cf. “Neonatrix” sp., unidentified “colubrines” and “natricines” (Colubridae), Naja sp., an unidentified elapid (Elapidae), Vipera sp. (“Oriental viper”), Vipera sp. (“aspis complex”) (Viperidae). Both faunas document a transitional phase from those reported from several late Early and Middle Miocene sites of Central and Western Europe. The climates of Sandelzhausen and Rothenstein 13, as indicated by ophidian fossils, were warm, although not tropical or subtropical.  相似文献

Peach belongs to the genus Prunus, which includes Prunus persica and its relative species, P. mira, P. davidiana, P. kansuensis, and P. ferganensis. Of these, P. ferganensis have been classified as a species, subspecies, or geographical population of P. persica. To explore the genetic difference between P. ferganensis and P. persica, high-throughput sequencing was used in different peach accessions belonging to different species. First, low-depth sequencing data of peach accessions belonging to four categories revealed that similarity between P. ferganensis and P. persica was similar to that between P. persica accessions from different geographical populations. Then, to further detect the genomic variation in P. ferganensis, the P. ferganensis accession “Xinjiang Pan Tao 1” and the P. persica accession “Xia Miao 1” were sequenced with high depth, and sequence reads were assembled. The results showed that the collinearity of “Xinjiang Pan Tao 1” with the reference genome “Lovell” was higher than that of “Xia Miao 1” and “Lovell” peach. Additionally, the number of genetic variants, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), structural variations (SVs), and the specific genes annotated from unmapped sequence in “Xia Miao 1” was higher than that in “Xinjiang Pan Tao 1” peach. The data showed that there was a close distance between “Xinjiang Pan Tao 1” (P. ferganensis) and reference genome which belong to P. persica, comparing “Xia Miao 1” (P. persica) and reference ones. The results accompany with phylogenetic tree and structure analysis confirmed that P. ferganensis should be considered as a geographic population of P. persica rather than a subspecies or a distinct species. Furthermore, gene ontology analysis was performed using the gene comprising large-effect variation to understand the phenotypic difference between two accessions. The result revealed that the pathways of gene function affected by SVs but SNPs and insertion-deletions markedly differed between the two peach accessions.  相似文献

Crinoids and ophiocistioids from classical fossil localities of the National Geosite “Schlade Valley”, NE of Bergisch Gladbach (Germany) are reported for the first time. The fossils were derived from the reefal Büchel Formation (lowermost Middle Givetian, Middle Devonian) at the northern flank of the Bergisch Gladbach-Paffrath Syncline (eastern Rhenish Massif). From the abandoned quarry “Im Grubenfeld”, skeletal elements of holothuroids, ophiocistioids and crinoids are documented from a bituminous marly shale horizon in the middle Büchel Formation. The finely bedded shales suffocated an already stressed, muddy “reefal” fauna, which followed on top of a massive Actinostroma stromatoporoid biostrome. The shales characterise an apparently regionally occurring event, herein denominated as “Schlade Event”. It is considered to represent the climax of the transgressive Lower pumilio Event. The autochthonous and vagile epibenthic echinoderm fauna on top of the “Schlade Event Layer” is low diverse. It is regarded, herein, as post disaster fauna, recolonising the dysaerobic softground/soupground together with the well-adapted trilobite Goldius. The cupressocrinitids Halocrinites and Procupressocrinus were recognised from a younger stratum of the upper Büchel Formation within the abandoned “Zimmermann Quarry” near-by. The crinoids settled in high-energy environments of a reef flat in association with characteristic brachiopods (Uncites, Stringocephalus) and bivalves (Eomegalodon) and were swept by storms into reef flat pools. In those exceptional fossil lagerstätten, which are marl-filled obrution deposits, they were parautochthonously preserved together with an autochthonous fauna composed mostly of gastropods and extremely rare allochthonous biota from the open marine realm. Published biozonations of the Büchel Formation, especially on ammonoids, are evaluated, partly corrected and supplemented by ecostratigraphic associations of rugose corals and crinoids. Schlade Event below and Taghanic Event above are major factors controlling biozonation. Taxonomic notes concern revision of the holothuroids from the Schlade Valley and discussion of taxonomic attribution of ophiocistoids and crinoids. All species formerly included in “Abbreviatocrinites” are transferred to genus Halocrinites, which has priority.  相似文献

Upper Triassic Norian reef boulders, exposed in a locality near the fountain “Tavuk Cesme” (“Chicken Fountain”) in Taurus Mountains, southern Turkey yielded a large number of hypercalcified sponges, including “sphinctozoans”, “inozoans”, “spongiomorphids”, and “chaetetids”. The sphinctozoans from this locality are described in this paper. Geologically, this locality belongs to the Anamas-Akseki autochthonous. The reef boulders of this locality are exposed near the “Tavuk Cesme” fountain, located at the road, leading from the town of Aksu to Yenisarbademli. The following taxa are described: Amblysiphonella taurica nov. sp., Anthalythalamia riedeli Senowbari-Daryan, Calabrisiphonella sphaerica nov. sp., Calabrisiphonella cuifi nov. sp., Cinnabaria minima Senowbari-Daryan, Colospongia recta nov. sp., Colospongia sp. 1, Colospongia sp. 2, Colospongia sp. 3, Cryptocoelia compacta nov. sp., Cryptocoelia? sp., Deningeria crassireticulata Senowbari-Daryan, Zühlke, Bechstädt and Flügel, Discosiphonella minima Senowbari-Daryan and Link, Gigantothalamia ovoidalis Senowbari-Daryan, Hajarispongia dipoyrazensis nov. sp., Hajarispongia cortexifera nov. sp., Kashanella irregularis Senowbari-Daryan, Kashanella cylindrica nov. sp., Parauvanella ferdowsensis Senowbari-Daryan, Parastylothalamia cylindrica nov. gen., nov. sp., Asiphothalamia polyosculata nov. gen, nov. sp., Sollasia norica nov. sp., and Thaumastocoelia sphaeroida Senowbari-Daryan. The most abundant sponge is Amblysiphonella taurica nov. sp. followed by Hajarispongia dipoyrazensis nov. sp., Colospongia and Discosiphonella minima Senowbari-Daryan and Link are also relatively abundant. The stylothalamid sponge Parastylothalamia nov. gen. is an abundant sponge genus in other Norian reefs of the Taurus Mountains, but is rare at the “Tavuk Cesme” locality.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of fatty acids (FA) in neutral lipids and phospholipids of digestive gland and pedal muscle has been performed in molluscs from various ecological groups differing by belonging to sea or fresh water, trophic types or the associated motor activity. In freshwater pulmonary gastropods Lymnaea stagnalis and Lymnaea ovalis and marine prosobranchial molluscs Buccinum undatum and Littorina littorea the total content of ω3-acids in phospholipids of the studied tissues differed more than twice, predominantly due to the combined effect of temperature and salinity of the habitat. The lower viscosity of cell membranes in marine species (ω3/ω6 < 1) is determined to the greatest degree by the presence of eicosapentaenoic acid that accounts for 22–25% of the FA sum in marine species. Comparison of the molluscs by their trophic belonging has revealed the presence of linoleic acid in triglycerides in digestive glands of phytophages (8–12%), but the practically complete absence of this acid in the predator B. undulatum (< 0.8%). By mobility, L. littorea inhabiting the high-low tide littoral was inferior to freshwater pulmonary gastropods and to the marine predator, as it stops moving twice a day during the low tide. In phospholipids of pedal muscle of this mollusc the amount of long-chain polyunsaturated C: 22 FA was 3–6 times lower than that in other studied species, which might possibly indicate the role of these acids in functioning of the pedal muscle contractile tissue. On the whole, use of the FA characteristics as the parameters determining belonging to certain ecological group requires a certain caution due to a complex action of biotic and abiotic factors on the animal metabolism. The exception is the ω3/ω6 ratio in total phospholipids of fresh water and marine gastropods.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the behavior of Formica polyctena Först during interaction with different symbionts (free-living aphids Aphis grossulariae Kalt. and hidden larvae of the sawfly Blasticotoma filiceti Klug) was carried out. Red wood ants demonstrate different levels of functional differentiation in relatively constant groups of foragers collecting honeydew. A deep “professional” specialization with clear division of a number of tasks among foragers was studied in groups of ants tending aphids. Four professional groups of foragers with different tasks were revealed: “shepherds,” “guards,” “transporters,” and “scouts” (or “coordinators”). The groups of foragers caring for sawfly larvae mainly consist of unspecialized ants. Only few ants (about 5%) remain on duty on the fern plant near B. filiceti larvae and protect the food resource from competitors, especially from other ants. In addition, the ants demonstrate simpler behavior while collecting the larval excretion, resembling that at the sugar feeders. On the whole, the behavior of red wood ants is rather flexible. The level of functional differentiation in groups of foragers collecting honeydew is determined not only by the colony size and requirements but by the nature of their interaction with trophobionts, particularly, by the possibility of direct contact.  相似文献

The extremely high diversity of spined loach biotypes in the Lower Danube has been detected by biochemical genetic investigation and cytometric analysis of 358 specimens collected in the riverbed and shallow channels. Along with two diploid species (C. elongatoides and C. “tanaitica”), six hybrid forms were revealed, namely, diploid C. elongatoides-“tanaitica”; triploid C. 2 elongatoides-“tanaitica,” C. elongatoides-2 “tanaitica,” and C. 2 elongatoides-species-1; and tetraploid C. 3 elongatoides-“tanaitica” and C. elongatoides-species-2-2 “tanaitica.” In addition, specimens with recombinant genotypes were also found. In spite of the apomictic mode of reproduction, the polyploids did not possess clonal structure, but according to the level of polymorphism and the genotype distribution, they were isomorphous to parental diploid species. Thus, in contrast to the polyploidy in Cobitids of the Dnieper, which have appeared in the basin due to the expansion, the polyploids of the Lower Danube are autochthonous and were derived by crossing with local diploid species. The process is apparently proceeds without any limitations.  相似文献

Sequencing of the fragment of control region in mitochondrial DNA in sculpin Cottus volki and the comparison of obtained data with homologous nucleotide sequences in the other species from genus Cottus demonstrated that C. volki occupies the basal position in the “poecilopus” group, which includes also typical sculpin C. poecilopus Heckel, 1837 from water bodies of Europe, sculpin C. szanaga Dybowski, 1869 from the Amur River basin, and sculpin Cottus cf. poecilopus from the Lena River basin. Early separation of C. volki line from common trunk of “poecilopus” group explains the presence in C. volki of several primitive (plesiomorphic for this group) morphological characters: long interior ray of ventral fin, practically complete lateral body line, and well-developed dentition of palatine bones.  相似文献

Numerous termite species have been introduced outside their native ranges by human transport, and some have become invasive. The dampwood termite Zootermopsis nevadensis (Hagen), which is native to western North America, has been introduced to and become established in Kawanishi City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Zootermopsis nevadensis is subdivided into two subspecies based on cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) phenotypes: Znevadensis nevadensis and Znevadensis nuttingi (Haverty and Thorne). Here, we identified Znevadensis in Japan as hybrids between the two subspecies. Chemical analysis showed the presence of 7,15-dimethylhenicosane and 5,17-dimethylhenicosane in the CHCs of Znevadensis in Japan, corresponding to the CHC phenotype of Znnevadensis. Conversely, all mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences of Znevadensis in Japan were identical to sequences from Znnuttingi and hybrids between the two subspecies from a native hybrid zone in California, USA. In addition, phylogenetic analysis showed that Znevadensis in Japan formed a clade with Znnuttingi and hybrids between the two subspecies. Our results show discordance between the chemical and genetic features of Znevadensis in Japan, indicating that individuals of Znevadensis in Japan are hybrids between the two subspecies.  相似文献

Hydrochemical and hydrobiological characteristics have been studied at 13 sites in the Okhta River within the precincts of St. Petersburg in 2010. The Water Pollution Index (WPI), calculated according to hydrochemical parameters, characterizes the river water quality as “very polluted” to “extremely polluted.” According to the Pantle–Buck–Sláde?ek Saprobity Index, obtained on the basis of macrozoobenthos characteristics, polysaprobic and α-mesosaprobic zones can be distinguished in the watercourse. The species richness of river macrophytes is low (18 species). The Macrophyte Water Quality Index makes it possible to assess water quality in the range from “polluted” to “very polluted” water. Macrophyte trophic indexes MTR, IBMR and TIM indicate a high trophy level in the watercourse sites. Based on the analysis of hydrochemical materials and the data on macrozoobenthos and macrophytes, the general tendency is similar: deterioration of water quality downstream. Macrophyte characteristics reflect changes in hydrochemical parameters downstream the river course. А strong correlation (r =–0.76) is found between the Macrophyte Water Quality Index and WPI. The possibility of using the data on macrophytes in small rivers for assessing water quality is demonstrated.  相似文献

“Air (aire, also aigre) in the body” is a frequent explanation of illness according to the traditional medical beliefs in Mexico. Anthropologists have generally scrutinized aire in the context of other common folk illnesses treated by traditional healers (curanderas). However, drawing on my research in the communities of Northern Oaxaca I suggest that aire occupies a more distinct position in the folk medical cosmology than it has usually been credited with. This distinction rests on the notion’s exceptional ambivalence and openness to multiple interpretations. “Air” is recurred to as the cause of illness mainly in situations where every other explanation, either “traditional” or “biomedical,” seems to be inadequate. The physical properties of air—its transparency, invisibility, apparent immateriality, near omnipresence, and virtual “nothingness”—render it a suitable explanation of the last resort. Local understandings of what aire “is” are often vague and elusive, and in many respects the term functions in folk medical discourse as an “empty signifier.”  相似文献

Erianthus arundinaceus, a member of the Saccharum complex, is of interest as a potential resource for sugarcane improvement and as a bioenergy crop. Genetic analyses of germplasm collections of E. arundinaceus are being used increasingly. To expand the genomic resources in E. arundinaceus, we aimed at developing simple sequence repeat markers. Using pyrosequencing on the 454 GS FLX system, we sequenced genomic DNA from “JW630” collected in Japan. A total of 1682 candidate loci were used to design the primers, and 1234 primer pairs amplified fragments of the expected size in the primer screening with three wild E. arundinaceus accessions (JW630, “JW4,” and “IJ76-349”). The efficiency of genotyping was validated with a subset of 174 primer pairs and 8 E. arundinaceus accessions. Of these primer pairs, 171 amplified fragments in all accessions tested and 162 detected polymorphic loci. The average values of genetic parameters were estimated as 0.30 (range, 0.09–0.49) for polymorphic information content, 1.65 (0.00–5.87) for marker index, and 2.78 (0.00–8.75) for resolving power. Using these parameters, we selected 61 primer pairs with large discriminatory power for the analyzed loci. Of the 174 primer pairs, 45 (25.9%) were also applicable to Saccharum and 33 (19.0%) to Miscanthus species. These markers would provide a valuable tool for estimating genetic diversity and constructing linkage maps in E. arundinaceus, which would be useful for genetic study and breeding.  相似文献

The postural stability on a seesaw generating anterior–posterior instability with the eyes open (EO) and then the eyes closed (EC) in young healthy subjects (n = 28) before and 6 min after the maximum bicycle exercise (Wingate test) performed using lower limbs (“leg exercise”) or upper limbs (“hand exercise”) was investigated. It was found that “hand exercise” caused the same increase in average velocity (V, mm/s) and in the average range of sway of the centre of pressure (Qy, mm) as “leg exercise.” However, the duration of V recovery (EC: 2 min 30 s and 50 s; EO: 60 s and 40 s after “leg exercise” and “hand exercise,” respectively) and Qy (EC: 1 min 10 s and 30 s after “leg exercise” and “hand exercise,” respectively; EO: no changes from baseline) was shorter after “hand exercise.” In the presence of visual information, the increment in V decreased more than 2 times after “leg exercise” (+100.5% and + 40.5%, p < 0.01 for EC and EO, respectively) and after “hand exercise” (+73.0% and +30.3%, p < 0.01 for EC and EO, respectively). Moreover, Qy after both exercises remained at the initial level under EO conditions but significantly increased under EC conditions (+42.8%, p < 0.01 after “leg exercise” and +40.3%, p < 0.01 after “hand exercise”). Thus, the maximum exercise for the muscles of the upper limbs causes the same reduction in postural stability as analogous exercise for the muscles of the lower limbs, but the recovery period after “hand” exercise was shorter. The presence of visual information allows the baseline maintenance of postural stability and significantly reduces the strain of postural regulation while standing on a movable support after the maximum “leg exercise” and “hand exercise.”  相似文献
