African trypanosomiasis research: 100 years of progress, but questions and problems still remain

Past and present progress in our understanding of African trypanosomiasis is briefly reviewed. Although tremendous scientific strides have been achieved, an epidemic of the disease is currently underway. Three areas of research which are believed necessary for the control of African trypanosomiasis are discussed. It is suggested that a better understanding of the host-parasite relationship is essential; more emphasis and a broader approach to drug development is required; and finally, further research into the socio-economic aspects of African trypanosomiasis is urgently needed before the human disease can again be controlled.     

Stem cell politics, ethics and medical progress

Tremendous controversy has surrounded efforts to undertake research on totipotent human stem cells. To date public policy in the United States has attempted to skirt the ethical and social questions raised by this research. Annas et al. argue that research using human embryos as a source of totipotent stem cells can secure broad public support if there is an open and public discussion about the ethical justification for undertaking such research and the assurance of adequate federal regulation and oversight.     

HIV-AIDS: ethics in healthcare,research, and access to treatments

Violence and gravity cannot be ignored when considering HIV and AIDS challenges. However, coping with this pandemic disease caused us to build up and experience new ways of solidarity that have transformed our views of medical care and public health. The few achievements of these years throw a new light on the figure of the ill person. They brought new references allowing a different understanding of the political stakes of public health. Partnership or even therapeutic alliance are now a framework to the understanding of respect, solidarity and equity. New viewpoints exist on the health care relationship. Our achievements show at first injustice in the access of treatments at the international level. They make clear our moral responsibilities toward every person that require a treatment. This idea should be emphasized when applied on the most vulnerable communities. The most urgent challenges that remain today are extreme precariousness situations, treatment access conditions, information, and quality of life.     

Module one: introduction to research ethics

This module will introduce you to the ethical concepts underlying applied ethical decision-making in the area of research involving human participants. We will also learn what the issues are that people involved in research on research ethics are concerned with. Ethics without an understanding of historical and legal context makes arguably little sense. It is for this reason that this module will begin with a brief history of research ethics and ends with a brief overview of the relevant national and international guidelines pertaining to ethical issues in research involving human participants.
