Biodiversity of Vibrios   总被引:29,自引:0,他引:29       下载免费PDF全文
Vibrios are ubiquitous and abundant in the aquatic environment. A high abundance of vibrios is also detected in tissues and/or organs of various marine algae and animals, e.g., abalones, bivalves, corals, fish, shrimp, sponges, squid, and zooplankton. Vibrios harbour a wealth of diverse genomes as revealed by different genomic techniques including amplified fragment length polymorphism, multilocus sequence typing, repetetive extragenic palindrome PCR, ribotyping, and whole-genome sequencing. The 74 species of this group are distributed among four different families, i.e., Enterovibrionaceae, Photobacteriaceae, Salinivibrionaceae, and Vibrionaceae. Two new genera, i.e., Enterovibrio norvegicus and Grimontia hollisae, and 20 novel species, i.e., Enterovibrio coralii, Photobacterium eurosenbergii, V. brasiliensis, V. chagasii, V. coralliillyticus, V. crassostreae, V. fortis, V. gallicus, V. hepatarius, V. hispanicus, V. kanaloaei, V. neonatus, V. neptunius, V. pomeroyi, V. pacinii, V. rotiferianus, V. superstes, V. tasmaniensis, V. ezurae, and V. xuii, have been described in the last few years. Comparative genome analyses have already revealed a variety of genomic events, including mutations, chromosomal rearrangements, loss of genes by decay or deletion, and gene acquisitions through duplication or horizontal transfer (e.g., in the acquisition of bacteriophages, pathogenicity islands, and super-integrons), that are probably important driving forces in the evolution and speciation of vibrios. Whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomics through the application of, e.g., microarrays will facilitate the investigation of the gene repertoire at the species level. Based on such new genomic information, the taxonomy and the species concept for vibrios will be reviewed in the next years.  相似文献

Abstract The gut microbiota of 7 species of deep-water (300–400 m) invertebrates from the Gulf of Mexico was examined. High populations of Vibrio spp. were observed in crustaceans (ranging from 105 to 7 × 106 cells/g gut content) while relatively low populations of Vibrio spp. were found in annelids, the water column, and sediment. Although saprophytic Vibrio species were isolated, Vibrio fluvialis and Vibrio hollisae , potential human pathogens, were isolated from the crustaceans, Pleoticus robustus, Nematocarcinas sp., Plesionika sp., and Munida sp., and Vibrio vulnificus was isolated from Nereis sp. These observations confirm the finding of Ohwada et al. [18] that the gut of deep-water invertebrates has a bacterial flora abundant in Vibrio spp. These results also suggest that some marine invertebrates may serve as reservoirs for certain potential pathogenic Vibrio species.  相似文献

The authors studied the enteropathogenic properties of 11 strains of hemolysing E1 Tor vibrios, of which 8 in enteric administration to suckling rabbits caused no death of the animals, and 3 caused the animal death with the phenomena of diarrhea, but without any typical cholerogenicity syndrome. In case of administration with mucine the pathogenic properties were revealed in 6 strains more. Use of strains grown on media with starch for the infection led, in individual cases, to the manifestation of enteropathogenic properties. Consequently, the strains of hemolysing E1 for vibrios under study should be regarded as weakly virulent, and some--as avirulent ones.  相似文献

The prevalence of the two-chromosome configuration was investigated in 34 species of vibrios and closely related species. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of undigested genomic DNA suggested that vibrios commonly have two chromosomes. The size of the large chromosome is predominantly within a narrow range (3.0 to 3.3 Mb), whereas the size of the small chromosome varies considerably among the vibrios (0.8 to 2.4 Mb). This fact suggests that the structure of the small chromosome is more flexible than that of the large chromosome during the evolution of vibrios.  相似文献

Deoxyribonucleic Acid Relationships Among Marine Vibrios   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) relationships of 80 strains identified either as Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, and V. anguillarum, or as allied marine vibrios were delineated by DNA-DNA competition experiments as well as by measuring the thermal stabilities of the DNA-DNA duplexes formed in direct binding studies. The tested strains included isolates from Japan, Europe, and the United States. The V. parahaemolyticus and V. alginolyticus groups showed an average of 67% homology to one another and 30% to strains of V. anguillarum. Significantly, a number of the isolates from the Pacific Northwest which had been previously identified as V. parahaemolyticus based on morphological, biochemical, and serological evidence were shown either to be strains of V. anguillarum or to belong to as yet unnamed groups. Most strains isolated from diseased salmon in the Pacific Northwest proved to be virtually identical with V. anguillarum type C by DNA homology experiments, thereby differentiating them from similar strains isolated from diseased herring and occasionally from salmon. The latter Pacific Northwest isolates fell into two distinct genotypic groups. A plot of the per cent homology by competition versus the difference in the thermal stabilities of heterologous and homologous duplexes (DeltaT(m,e)) between the same DNA species shows a linear decline in homology of 4.25% per degree of DeltaT(m,e). The use of this relationship for estimating the percentage of the mispaired bases distinguishing DNA preparations directly from competition experiments is discussed.  相似文献

Vibrios in the Louisiana gulf coast environment   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

A polyphasic approach, using bacteriological, immunological, and molecular biological techniques was used to elucidate the distribution of pathogenicVibrio species in the Louisiana coastal environment. A variety ofVibrio species pathogenic for man, includingV. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, V. fluvialis, andV. vulnificus, were found to be ubiquitous in Louisiana.Vibrio species monitored were shown to fluctuate in response to environmental factors of temperature, salinity, and nutrient level, and to vary independently of fecal coliform counts. A comprehensive serological screening system, based on species specific H antigens, was developed to identify pathogenicVibrio sp. 1 step after primary isolation.Vibrio sp. were correctly identified with accuracies ranging from 93–100%, depending on the specific H antiserum. Over 2,500V. cholerae isolates were rapidly screened for production of cholera toxin by DNA hybridization of specific toxin gene probes to colonies inoculated on nitrocellulose filter paper. The toxin gene probes, together with O antigen analysis, revealed that enterotoxigenicV. cholerae 01 serovars were recovered only from sewage stations or human disease, whereas enterotoxigenicV. cholerae non 01 serovars were recovered from environmental samples in addition to clinical and sewage samples. The results of this study indicate that techniques of immunology and molecular biology are very valuable supplements to conventional bacteriological techniques in studying the epidemiology and ecology of pathogenicVibrio sp.  相似文献

Vibrios are Gram-negative curved bacilli that occur naturally in marine, estuarine, and freshwater systems. Some species include human and animal pathogens, and some vibrios are necessary for natural systems, including the carbon cycle and osmoregulation. Countless in vivo and in vitro studies have examined the interactions between vibrios and their environment, including molecules, cells, whole animals, and abiotic substrates. Many studies have characterized virulence factors, attachment factors, regulatory factors, and antimicrobial resistance factors, and most of these factors impact the organism's fitness regardless of its external environment. This review aims to identify common attributes among factors that increase fitness in various environments, regardless of whether the environment is an oyster, a rabbit, a flask of immortalized mammalian cells, or a planktonic chitin particle. This review aims to summarize findings published thus far to encapsulate some of the basic similarities among the many vibrio fitness factors and how they frame our understanding of vibrio ecology. Factors representing these similarities include hemolysins, capsular polysaccharides, flagella, proteases, attachment factors, type III secretion systems, chitin binding proteins, iron acquisition systems, and colonization factors.  相似文献

In an enzymatic reaction it was observed that lysates of Vibrio cholerae serovar 01 from human origin produced a reversal of the redox indicator while lysates of V. cholerae non-01 serovar, and 01 serovar isolated from the environment in cholera-free areas did not produce such change. This observation was utilized in a rapid visual test (RVT) which may be useful in the identification of cholera vibrios. There seems to be no correlation between RVT positives and toxin production. The composition of the media seems to be a major factor affecting the outcome of the test. The mechanism of the reaction is under study. Preliminary observations suggest participation of the oxidase system of V. cholerae , atmospheric oxygen and perhaps selective action of Triton X-100.  相似文献
