Several specimens of an elasmobranch from the upper Mississippian Bear Gulch limestone of Montana are described. The first dorsal spine and fin closely resemble Stethacanthus erectus and to a lesser extent Stethacanthus altonensis. The new genus and species Orestiacanthus fergusi is proposed for the specimens, and it is suggested that recent attempts to synonymize the species of Stethacanthus on the basis of spines are unjustified. The specimens also share the enlarged cranial denticles, general form of the palatoquadrate, cladodont teeth and pectoral fin with S. altonensis. They differ from S. altonensis in proportions of jaws, numbers of tooth families, numbers of prearticular basals and axial radials, morphology of the second dorsal fin, and in the presence of generalized squamation in some specimens (but not the female). The pelvic fins differ greatly in having a prominent metapterygium.  相似文献

Larges samples of fossil rhizomyids from the Siwalikmolasse deposits of the Potwar Plateau, Pakistan, enable reevaluation of fossil taxa and their evolutionary relationships. Siwalik Rhizomyidae constitute a basis for analysis of poorly represented rhizomyids from other areas in Asia and contribute to biochronological correlation. The extant Tachyoryctinae and Rhizomyinae diverged during the early history of the family and diagnoses of the subfamilies are amended to include extinct genera. Siwalik tachyoryctines include Kanisamys, Protachyoryctes, Rhizomyides, and Eicooryctes nov. gen.; rhizomyines are Brachyrhizomys and Anepsirhizomys nov. gen. Kanisamys, the earliest Siwalik rhizomyid, appeared by about 13 Ma and evolved slowly, displaying stasis in K. sivalensis. Brachyrhizomys evolved from Kanisamys by 9.5 Ma and radiated rapidly. B. nagrii displays rapid increase in size through time. About 7 Ma, Kanisamys and Brachyrhizomys became extinct locally and Protachyoryctes, Eicooryctes, and Rhizomyides appeared, perhaps in response to increasing aridity. After 5.5 Ma, rhizomyids became uncommon in the Potwar and Anepsirhizomys (3.0 Ma) constitutes the latest record of Rhizomyidae in Pakistan.  相似文献

The Upper Devonian localities of the Kerman and Tabas area yielded numerous brachythoracid arthrodire remains, referred here mainly to Golshanichthys asiatica nov. gen., nov. sp., and Holonema cf. radiatumObrouchev. Some specimens are suggestive of species belonging to the genera Plourdosteus, Eastmanosteus and Aspidichthys. G. asiatica is a primitive dinichthyid characterized by e.g. very deep posterior and anterior embayments of the central plates. Some ptyctodontid tooth plates of «Rhynchodus and «Ptyctodus type have been found in the Frasnian and Famennian.  相似文献

Three species of Isorthidae are described in the Lower Devonian of the Armorican Massif. Two of them were hitherto badly known, being never adequately described nor figured: Isorthis (Protocortezorthis) miloni from the Gahard Formation (Gedinnian) and Isorthis (Protocortezorthis) trigeri from the Saint-Céneré Formation (Gedinnian-Siegenian). Isorthis oehlertiSolle, 1976 is considered as a synonym of Isorthis (Protocortezorthis) trigeri. The geographic distribution of these species allows to corroborate that until the top of the Lower Devonian (top of Le Faou Formation), two provinces with different faunal associations exist in the Armorican Massif.  相似文献

A crocodilian jaw fragment from the Jurassicof Thailand is referred to a new species of the genus SunosuchusYoung,, 1948, S. thailandicus.. The genus Sunosuchus,, which is interpreted here as belonging to the family Goniopholididae (Mesosuchia),, was previously known only from the continental Jurassic of north-central China. The occurrence of this freshwater crocodilian in the Khorat Group of Thailand provides evidence that, whatever its previous palaeogeographical history may have been, by Jurassic times South-East Asia was part of Laurasia.  相似文献

Four new species of coelacanths (Actinistia) from the Namurian E2b marine Bear Gulch Limestone of Montana are described, and a fifth species, originally described as an actinopterygian, is redescribed. Two new suborders are diagnosed. The taxonomy is: Suborder Coelacanthocdei, family Rhabdodermatidae, Caridosuctor populosum nov. sp., suborder Hadronectoroidei nov., family Hadronectoridae nov., Hadronector donbairdi nov. sp., Polyosteorhynchus simplex nov. sp. and Allenypterus montanusMelton. Lochmocercus aciculiodontus nov. sp. is incertae sedis.  相似文献

Part of a large capitosaurid skull, similar to that of Cyclotosaurus posthumus from the Upper Triassic of Germany, has been discovered in the upper part of the Huai Hin Lat Formation near Chulabhorn (Nam Phrom) Dam. This discovery is consistent with the presumed Norian age of this formation. Although the phylogeny of the Capitosauridae is still unclear, the group of Upper Triassic Cyclotosaurus species to which C. posthumus belongs is monophyletic and seems to be known only from Laurasia or Northwestern Gondwana (Morocco). The occurrence of C. cf. posthumus in Thailand is consistent with the hypothesis previously put forward, that this part of Southeast Asia was bound to Laurasia in Mesozoic times.  相似文献

Lower Devonian strata from the drill cores from Poland have yielded new Heterostraci material. One ventral shield of Toombsaspis (Traquairaspididae, Phialaspidinae) discovered in the Białopole IG-1 drill core, and a fragment of dorsal shield of cf. Paraliliaspis (Cyathaspididae, Anglaspidinae) with the impressions of internal structures from Ciepielów IG-1 are described and provide new information on paleogeographic disparity of these groups.  相似文献

Black carbonate rocks («ampelitic limestones)exposed in la Meignanne, NW of Angers, Massif Armoricain, as tectonic lenses within a complex tectonic structure of grey Pragian limestones are assigned from Bivalvia and Chitinozoa to the Upper Silurian and Lowermost Devonian. Biostratigraphical and paleoecological analyses show that the Silurian-Devonian boundary in this area is developed in offshore facies and that it may be correlated directly with the international stratotype of the Prague Basin (Barrandian, Bohemia). Paleogeographical communication between the two areas is indicated by 28 species of bivalves in common from two Pridolian assemblages (with Cheiopteria bridgei and with Snoopyia insolita) and one Lochkovian (with Antipleura bohemica). Stratigraphical correlation with the Prague Basin is also based on the chitinozoan zonal index species for the Uppermost Pridolian (Urnochitina urna) and Lowermost Lochkovian (Eisenackitina bohemica). A Lochkovian age is further supported by the discovery of Monograptus uniformis uniformis in the assemblage with Antipleura bohemica. A Ludlovian age is indicated by the occurence of «Hemicadium elevatum and an abundance of the ostracode Entomozoe (Richteria) migrans, which is an index species for the Middle Ludlovian in Bohemia.  相似文献

The recently discovered late Triassic vertebratelocality at Chulabhorn Dam (North-Eastern Thailand) has yielded incomplete remains (jaw fragments and teeth) of phytosaurs, which are apparently indicative of a form related to Belodon and Rutiodon. They can be interpreted as showing that in the late Triassic North-Eastern Thailand was already biogeographically part of Laurasia.  相似文献

In 1909 John Smith, a Scottish naturalist and geologist, described 23 «genera and 51 «species of trace fossils from small patches of sediment associated with andesite lava flows at Dunure, Ayrshire. He interpreted the traces as evidence of a diverse invertebrate fauna which inhabited small pools and fissures in the lava surface between eruptions. Smith's collection (c. 300 specimens) was presented to the British Geological Survey, Edinburgh but has remained largely unstudied.Re-examination of the Smith collection shows thatit came from 3 separate localities which differ in composition of the ichnofaunas, associated sediments and sedimentary structures. Arthropod trackways dominate the ichnofauna occurring in laminated siltstone frequently with ripple marks and foam marks suggesting formation in shallow lacustrine conditions. Preservational and behavioural analysis of trace fossils reveals about 10 valid ichnogenera of locomotion and swimming trackways, resting traces, feeding trails but few burrows. Presence of early terrestrial arthropod traces is uncertain. Palaeocological interpretation is of ephemeral lakes in distal braid-plain situation subject to subsurface invasion of andesite lava producing fluidization and deformation of wet sediment. The Dunure ichnocoenosis shows unique diversity of Devonian arthropod trace fossils.  相似文献

The study of numerous fossil solitary forms ofStreptelasmatina (Coelenterata, Rugosa) and some ones belonging to different suborders from the Devonian of the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain), shows the importance of such organisms concerning the relations among the major faunal provinces during the Devonian time. The analysis of the Devonian Rugose coral fauna(from Emsian to Frasnian) lets to establish the paleobiogeographical relations of the Cantabrian genera. Particularly, during the Lower Devonian (Emsian) the relationships between the Eastern of North America and Spain would be closer than it was supposed until now.The evidence on the world distribution of thestudied forms suggest possible migration roads.  相似文献

Hitherto the earliest positive record of ankylosaurs(armored dinosaurs) has been from beds well up in the Lower Cretaceous; in fact, however, specimens referable to the ankylosaurian family Nodosauridae are present in the Middle and Upper Jurassic of England: from the Middle Callovian [partial mandible Sarcolestes leedsiLydekker]], the Upper Oxfordian [femur Cryptodraco eumerus (Seeley)), maxilla Priodontognathus phillipsii (Seeley))], and the Upper Tithonian [caudal vertebra, tooth]. The Tithonian tooth and those of Priodontognathus are large and similar to those of the nodosaurids Priconodon and Sauropelta (Lower Cretaceous, U.S.A.). The incomplete mandible of Sarcolestes is similar to that of Sauropelta with a dermal scute fused to the lateral surface, and a tooth row extending to the anterior end of the jaw; an unusual feature is the caniniform first tooth. The quadrupedal ankylosaurs and stegosaurs probably represent separate evolutionary lines that extend back at least into the Lower Jurassic, and both lines probably evolved from ornithopod dinosaurs that were bipedal. Nodosaurid ankylosaurs occur in Europe from the Middle Jurassic to Late Cretaceous and probably reached North America via a filter route in the early Cretaceous.  相似文献

Biometrical study of the metapodials of modern wild species (E. grevyi, E. burchelli boehmi, E. zebra hartmannae, E. africanus, E. hemionus and E. przewalskii) and some fossil forms (E. stenonis vireti and cf. vireti from the Villafranchian of France and Spain; E. tabeti and E. mauritanicus from the Lower and Middle Pleistocene of Northern Africa; E. mosbachensis from the Middle Pleistocene of Germany). Classical functional and evolutive interpretations of some characters are discussed: development of the distal keel, of the distal supra-articular and articular widths, of the proximal widths and antero-posterior diameters.  相似文献

The holotype of Paranthodon africanus (Broom) from the Kirkwood Formation (Lower Cretaceous) of the Algoa Basin, Cape Province, South Africa consists of a partial skull, the bones of which are very similar to those of Stegosaurus. Both sides of the maxillary tooth crowns have a bulbous cingulum and a very prominent central vertical ridge above the large apical denticle that is bordered anteriorly and posteriorly by four to seven smaller denticles. Diagnostically stegosaurian material is also known from the Lower Cretaceous of England (Craterosaurus) and China (Wuerhosaurus) and the Upper Cretaceous of India (Dravidosaurus).  相似文献

The Deleted in Azoospermia (DAZ) family of RNA binding proteins consists of highly conserved genes boule, daz and daz-like (dazl) essential for germ cell development. boule is known for its unisexual meiotic expression in invertebrates and mammals, but meiotic-specific female expression plus meiosis-preferential male expression in trout, and meiosis-preferential bisexual expression in medaka. dazl shows highly conserved bisexual expression throughout gametogenesis in diverse species. Here we report the cloning and expression of boule and dazl in the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), an important aquaculture fish. Molecular cloning and sequence analysis led to the identification of tilapia boule and dazl cDNAs. The predicted partial Boule contains a conserved RRM motif and Dazl has the C-terminal sequence. On a phylogenetic tree, tilapia Boule and Dazl are in separate clades of Boule and Dazl homologs from other species, indicating their divergence during early vertebrate evolution. By RT-PCR analysis, boule and dazl showed bisexual gonad-specific expression. By in situ hybridization analysis, both boule and dazl RNAs were restricted to female and male germ cells of adult gonads but absent in gonadal soma. In the ovary, boule and dazl RNAs were abundant in oocytes. In the testis, boule and dazl RNAs were prominent in meiotic spermatocytes but barely detectable in meiotic products. These data show that boule and dazl are expressed bisexually in germ cells and provide useful markers to study gametogenesis in the adult tilapia.  相似文献

The large «crocutoïd hyaenas from the Plio-Pleistocenedeposits of Eurasia do not belong to the same lineage as the extant species Hyaena hyaena and must be referred to the genus PachycrocutaKretzoi, of which an emended diagnosis is given. This revision takes into account some undescribed or ill-known specimens from Russia, China and Africa. They definitely establish that Pachycrocuta ranged over Eurasia, from West Europe to East China, as early as the early Villafranchian at least, and that it was present in North Africa too; a large sample from the Odessa Catacombs affords an estimation of the intraspecific variation in the Ruscinian species, H. pyrenaica, known until now by only a few specimens from the western part of the Mediterranean basin, and it shows H. pyrenaica to be the ancestral form of the Villafranchian Eurasian species P. perrieri, from which derived P. brevirostris, the last species of the lineage, as previously shown by other authors. It appears that the “Hyaena lineage evolved simultaneously in Africa; we knew already that the root of this lineage is H. abronia, a species from the late Miocene of South Africa whose generic attribution is discussed relative to some Ictitheres from Shan-Si, Samos, Sahabi and Klein Zee. The hypothesis of a common African origin of the two lineages is not excluded, if not demonstrated. The relationships of the Pleistocene European species H. prisca and that of the extant African species H. brunnea are discussed.  相似文献

Fertility genes boule and dazl constitute the evolutionarily conserved DAZ (Deleted in AZoospermia) family of RNA binding proteins essential for germline development across animal phyla. Here we report the cloning and expression analysis of boule and dazl from the Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer), a marine fish that undergoes sequential male-to-female sex reversal. Molecular cloning and sequence comparison led to the identification of boule and dazl cDNAs. RT-PCR analysis showed that both boule and dazl RNAs were restricted to the gonads among adult organs examined. Chromogenic in situ hybridization revealed germ cell-specific expression for both boule and dazl in female and male adults. Importantly, distinct differences were found between boule and dazl in terms of temporospatial expression and subcellular distribution. The boule RNA was abundant in late gametogenic cells except sperm. Interestingly, dazl expression increases in early oocytes and concentrates in a perinuclear speckle that appears to develop ultimately into the Balbiani body in advanced oocytes. The dazl RNA was found to be abundant in spermatocytes but hardly detectable in sperm. These data demonstrate that boule and dazl are germ cell markers in the adult Asian seabass, and that bisexual germline-specific expression has been conserved for boule and dazl in fish.  相似文献

A large sample of skulls and associated dentitions of Cormohipparion sphenodus (Cope, 1889). new combination, is described from Miocene deposits of Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, and California. This species is morphologically more advanced than the most primitive species of the genus, C. goorisiMacFadden & Skinner, 1981, and more primitive than a third and more advanced species of this genus. C. occidentale (Leidy, 1856). In several characters such as configuration of the preobrital fossa, size, hypsodonty, shape of protocone, and complexity of enamel plication, C. sphenodus is morphologically similar, and potentially related to, some Old World Vallesian «Hipparion. In addition, based on radiometric calibration of stratigraphic sequences in Nebraska and California, C. sphenodus spans an interval of time from about 13.6 to 11 Ma. Inasmuch as the Old World «Hipparion Datum is calibrated at about 12 Ma, we conclude that C. sphenodus exhibits the morphological and chronological prerequisites to have been directly ancestral to some of these Old World forms. The hipparion horses apparently were a polyphyletic assemblage of several genera, and their biogeographic and biochronologic history is more complex than classically thought. Several dispersal events involving these horses may have occurred between the New and Old Worlds during the late Miocene.  相似文献

Three osteostracan genera, Tannuaspis, Tuvaspis and Ilemoraspis, from the Silurian and Devonian of the Autonomous Republic of Tuva and the Autonomous Region of Khakassia (USSR), are revised on the basis of the type material briefly described by Obruchev (1956, 1961, 1964). Tannuaspis bears some resemblances with the Tremataspididae. Tuvaspis may be closely related to Tannuaspis. Finally, there is no evidence of paired fins and cornual processes in Ilemoraspis (neither is there any evidence of their absence). Tannuaspis and Ilemoraspis share some characters which are not found in any other osteostracan: widely separated orbits, very small and oval lateral fields, situated at the same level as the median dorsal field. These resemblances may suggest that these two genera (to which Tuvaspis may be added) form a monophyletic group of osteostracans, which may be endemic to this part of Central Asia.  相似文献
