The conventional chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) phenotype assay was conducted using 11-day-old embryonatic eggs of white Leghorn strains, each inoculated with 0.2 ml of subgroup A Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) and subgroup C RSV separately containing 10(3)pfu ml(-1). Eggs were further incubated for hatching. Harvesting of CAMs for counting of pocks and monitoring chicks for liver tumour (LT) mortality during 4 weeks of post-hatching period were followed. The conversely associated phenotype (CAP) incidence i.e. CAM(+) LT(-) and CAM(-) LT(+) was observed in all three lines for both subgroup A and C virus infection. The LT deaths of chicks in all strains occurred within 21 days post-hatch irrespective of virus subgroups. The regression analysis of %LT death (transformed data) distributed within pock count range (PCR) basis was performed. The regression coefficients (b(i)'s) were found to be non-significant, indicating that %LT death did not correlate with number of particles that entered the cells because the chicks that had at least 25 pock counts in CAMs died with few exceptions. This study upheld the view that the CAM phenotypes (S and R) under the control of a pair of alleles, a(s) and a(r) at the tva locus and c(s) and c(r) at the tvc locus as reported extensively. Because of a high correlation coefficients between CAM and LT phenotypes [S and LT(+)] in respect of subgroup A (r = 0.72) and subgroup C (r = 0.81) infection, it is obvious that one could postulate a pleiotropic control of the two traits by the tva and tvc genes, respectively. Indeed fitting a 4-allele model in both tva and tvc locus, suggesting that CAPs are the indicator for nullifying the conventional 2-allele model proposed for the induced tumour expression phenotypes by leukosis sarcoma viruses.  相似文献

Chicks that hatch from eggs containing group specific antigen (gs antigen) of lymphoid leukosis virus (LLV) subgroups, grow poorly. In our laboratory for more precise identification of LLV-of subgroup A (LLV-A) resistant and susceptible genotypes by progeny testing, the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay in complemented by liver tumour (LT) assay, wherein Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) of subgroup A (homologous to LLV-A) was used. The present study was conducted in a light breed (White Leghorn) and also in a heavy breed (Rhode Island Red) to ascertain the effect of infection on embryonic growth by RSV subgroup A. Mean relative body weight (rbw) of infected LT negative chicks of either breed exceeded the control highly significantly (P < 0.01) by 2%. However, neither the dose of virus inoculated per embryo, nor egg size influenced the relative body weight of day old chicks (P > 0.05). No difference in relative body weight of LT positive and control chicks was observed.  相似文献

Embryos (II day-old) of Australorp breed were inoculated via chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) with subgroup A Rous sarcoma virus, and hatched subsequently. The post-hatch survival period in chicks was recorded upto the last chick that died by virus-induced liver tumour, which had a range from 3 to 50 days with an average of 13 +/- 8.7 days. The survival potential of progency tested Australorp parents selected on the basis of negative CAM-infection and those selected on uninoculated embryos, differed significantly (P less than 0.01) while maintaining an inverse relationship between liver tumour mortality and degrees of infection of CAMs. The homozygous susceptibles lacking either ar1 or ar2 or both alleles of the tva (tumour virus a) locus died within 7 days of post-hatching, supporting thereby 4-allele genetic model of tva locus recently proposed for the control of LT- and CAM-infection phenotypes.  相似文献

Response to wing-web challenge (WWC) of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) subgroups was studied in 4-8 weeks old chicks of a light breed, a heavy breed and a cross between an indigenous black plumage Bantam fowl and Australorp breed. Wing-web tumor (WWT) began to develop within one week in response to virus subgroups A (BS-RSV) and C [RSV (RAV-49)] challenge. In chicks challenged with subgroup D [RSV (RAV-50)] virus it took a minimum of 4 weeks for development of WWT. Positive response to WWC by subgroups A, C and D virus was 84%, 100% and 52%, respectively. The duration of exhibition of positive response was maximum for subgroup A virus, followed by subgroup D and minimum for subgroup C virus.  相似文献

Survivorship of Little Tern Sterna albifrons eggs and chicks was followed on an islet in the Nakdong Estuary, Republic of Korea, in 1995 and 1996. Mean egg size and incubation period were significantly different between the 2 years. The maximum clutch size was three eggs, and the second egg in the clutch often hatched earlier than the first, while most of the third eggs hatched last. In 1996, when the fate of 249 eggs from 106 nests was followed for 40 days, hatching success, fledging success and breeding success were 77%, 40% and 31%, respectively. High mortality occurred in the early chick stage, mostly because of rain and predation by Weasels Mustela sibirica. The breeding success per egg was 14% in one-egg clutches, 28% in two-egg clutches and 34% in three-egg clutches. This difference was mainly attributed to the lower hatching success in the smaller clutches. In three-egg clutches, the third egg showed significantly lower breeding success than siblings. The main foods of the Little Tern were Tridentiger obscurus, Engraulis japonicus, Hyporhamphus intermedius, Acanthogobius flavimanus (all fish), Palaemon sp. and Crangon affinis (shrimps). The feeding frequency was, apparently, not affected by time of day and age of chicks but was probably influenced by weather conditions. Newly hatched chicks failed to eat 25% of the prey brought to them, although this decreased with the age of the chicks.  相似文献

The mortality of Sandwich tern Sterna sandvicensis chicks held in enclosures was studied in colonies on Griend, in the Dutch Wadden Sea, from 1992 to 1999, and on Hirsholm, in the Danish Kattegat, in 1997. Survival of chicks until fledging was 73% for chicks hatching from first-laid eggs or single-egg clutches and 59–64% for partially hatched two-egg clutches, whereas 6% of second hatchlings survived until fledging. Less than 2% of all two-chick broods actually fledged two chicks. Because 18% of the two-egg clutches only hatched one egg, 7% of fledglings of two-egg clutches originated from a second-laid egg. In nests where both eggs hatched, the number of chicks was usually reduced soon after hatching. Within five days of hatching more than 50% of the second hatchlings died of starvation or were preyed upon. It seems that overproduction commonly occurs in Sandwich terns and that investment in a surplus egg mainly serves as an insurance mechanism. On Griend and Hirsholm, chick productivity of two-egg clutches was somewhat higher than for one-egg clutches. Undernourishment was an important cause of death, either directly by starvation or by selective predation of chicks in poor condition. This, in combination with earlier, studies suggests that Sandwich tern parents on Griend are exposed to severe food stress.  相似文献

Since Darwin, the nature of the relationship between evolution and domestication has been debated. Evolution offers different mechanisms of selection that lead to adaptation and may end in the origin of new species as defined by the biological species concept. Domestication has given rise to numerous breeds in almost every domesticated species, including chickens. At the same time, so-called artificial selection seems to exclude mechanisms of sexual selection by the animals themselves. We want to forward the question to the animal itself: With whom do you reproduce successfully? This study focused on the sexual behavior of the domestic chicken Gallus gallus f.dom., particularly the White Crested Polish breed. Experiments on mate choice and the observation of fertilization and hatching rates of mixed-breeding groups revealed breed-specific preferences. In breeding groups containing White Crested Polish and a comparative breed, more purebred chicks hatched than hybrids (number of eggs collected: 1059). Mating was possible in equal shares, but in relation to the number of eggs collected, purebred offspring (62.75%±7.10%, M±SE) hatched to a greater extend compared to hybrid offspring (28.75%±15.32%, M±SE). These data demonstrate that the mechanism of sexual selection is still present in domestic chicken breeds, which includes the alteration of gene frequencies typical for domestication and evolutionary speciation. Due to selection and mate choice we state that breeding in principle can generate new species. Therefore, we see domestication as an evolutionary process that integrates human interests of animal breeding with innate mate choice by the animal.  相似文献

Growth and development of six hand-reared red bird of paradise chicks was documented at the New York Zoological Park from March 1988 to May 1989. A total of 16 eggs were laid, of which 10 were fertile. Clutches consisted of two eggs and the female left the next infrequently during incubation. Two chicks left in the nest were apparently victims of parental abuse. Eggs were subsequently removed from the nest after 10–14 days, candled, and if fertile, were artificially incubated. The average incubation period was 16.6 days. Newly hatched chicks were without down and their eyes remained closed until approximately 6 days of age. Hand-reared chicks were maintained in Air Shield Infant Isolettes. The weight of newly hatched chicks was about 8 g, and the weight typically doubled during the first week. Ratios of food intake to body weight were highest between day 4 and 10. Pin feathers were visible on the wings after 4 days, and after 3 weeks, the chicks were fully feathered. Analysis of the diet revealed acceptable levels of iron, but vitamin A and E levels were higher than recommended for poultry chicks. This paper documents the first successful hand-rearing of any species of birds of paradise from hatching to fledging.  相似文献

The transformation studies were performed on genetically pure hen breeds: the donor was Russian white (white colour is a dominant character), the recipient was New Hampshire (pale-yellow-brown). The high-polymeric DNA (2.10(9) dalton) was isolated from erythrocytes and testicles of donor cocks and introduced to a fresh-laid egg of the recipient by replacing the protein. Two sets of experiments on 570 eggs were made. The single injection with 150 micrograms of donor DNA to the recipient egg induced a stable change of feathering colour (particoloured) in 46% of the hatched chicks, which remained for 6 months of observation. Thus, the high-polymeric DNA possesses the property of somatic transformation, that evidences for a high intact character of these preparations.  相似文献

A total of 216 23-week-old laying hens from two different genetic backgrounds (half of the birds were Lohmann brown [LB] and [LSL] hens, respectively) and 24 adult roosters were assigned to a feeding trial to study the effect of increasing concentrations of deoxynivalenol (DON) in the diet (0, 5, 10 mg/kg) on the reproductive performance of hens and roosters, and the health of the newly hatched chicks. Hatchability was adversely affected by the presence of DON in LB hens’ diet, while the hatchability of the LSL chicks was significantly higher than LB chicks. An interaction effect between DON in the hens’ diet and the breed was noticed on fertility, as the fertility was decreased in the eggs of LB hens receiving 10 mg/kg DON in their diet and increased in the eggs of LSL hens fed 10 mg/kg DON. Moreover, spleen relative weight was significantly decreased in the chicks hatched from eggs of hens fed contaminated diets, while gizzard relative weight was significantly decreased in LB chicks with 10 mg/kg DON in their diet compared with the control group. On the other hand, the chicks’ haematology and organ histopathology were not affected by the dietary treatment. Additionally, the presence of DON in the roosters’ diet had no effect on fertility (the percentage of fertile eggs of all laid eggs). Consequently, the current results indicate a negative impact of DON in LB hens’ diet on fertility and hatchability, indicating that the breed of the hens seems to be an additional factor influencing the effect of DON on reproductive performance of the laying hens.  相似文献

The pathogenicity of avian nephritis virus (ANV) for embryonating hen's eggs was studied by various routes of inoculation. When inoculated with ANV by the yolk sac route, 6-day-old embryos showed the highest susceptibility and all of them died 3 to 14 days postinoculation (PI). They manifested hemorrhage and edema of the whole body (3 to 6 days PI) and stunting (7 to 14 days PI). The 50% egg-infective dose of the virus by yolk sac inoculation coincided well with the virus titer expressed in plaque-forming units determined on the monolayer of chicken kidney cell cultures. The virus could be passed serially through the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of embryonating hen's eggs. In these eggs the CAM presented edematous thickening at the inoculation site, and the embryo stunting. when inoculated by the CAM route, high virus doses killed all embryos, but low virus doses allowed some of the infected embryos to hatch normally. When inoculated by the allantoic cavity route, the virus did not multiply in the allantoic cavity of embryonating eggs, but some of these eggs became infected. Fluorescent antigens were present only in the kidneys and CAM of embryos infected with the virus. The virus was recovered at a low rate from cloacal swabs of chicks from normally hatched eggs inoculated with the virus by the CAM route. These chicks were variable in growth, but had antibodies against the virus and developed nephritis at 36 days of age.  相似文献

The timing of egg hatching in Cryptotympana facialis was examined in relation to short-term weather conditions. The brief underwater submergence, once a week, of dead twigs bearing cicada egg nests resulted in high hatching rates both at 25 degrees C and under outdoor conditions protected from rainfall. Under outdoor conditions with natural rainfall, most eggs hatched on rainy days. There was a significant positive correlation between the number of hatching eggs and daily relative humidity (RH). When eggs picked from twigs were exposed to various humidity levels, many eggs hatched quickly at higher humidity without direct contact with liquid water. Newly hatched nymphs showed a low tolerance to desiccation; at 81% RH at 25 degrees C, most of them died within 6 h. Under outdoor conditions, most nymphs died within 2 h on sunny days, whereas nymphs survived longer on rainy days. When newly hatched nymphs were released on dry ground, only 24% of them succeeded in burrowing into the soil, and many were killed by ants or desiccation. However, 92% of nymphs released onto wet ground successfully burrowed into it. The direct induction of hatching by high humidity ensures the survival and establishment in the soil of newly hatched nymphs in this species.  相似文献

When inoculated with chicken anemia agent (CAA) via the yolk sac at 6 days of age, chick embryos could develop normally into chicks. All the chicks hatched suffered from anemia and died at 10 to 15 days of age with bone marrow aplasia. Specific pathogen free laying hens were inoculated with CAA, and eggs were collected from them over a period from 1 to 28 days after inoculation. Two of 67 chicks hatched from the eggs revealed anemia at 14 days of age. CAA was recovered from 3 of 40 chicks. From the results, a possibility of egg transmission of CAA from dams to their progeny was experimentally suggested.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to describe causes of morbidity and mortality in a breeding colony of double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) on Doré Lake (Saskatchewan, Canada), and to determine cause-specific mortality rates of juvenile birds. Morbidity and mortality were monitored every third day during the breeding season from 1994 to 1996 from inside a tunnel-and-blind system. Affected eggs and birds were collected for examination and diagnosis. The cause of mortality was determined for 105 eggs, 178 nestlings (< or = 4-wk-old), 1393 post-nestling chicks (> 4-wk-old), and 10 adults. The main causes of mortality were infertility or embryonal death, avian predation, displacement of eggs and chicks from the nest, starvation from sibling competition, Newcastle disease, coyote predation, human-induced suffocation, and entrapment. In 49% of the cases, avian predation and displacement from the nest of eggs or nestlings was associated with human disturbance. Thirty-six nestlings, 40 post-nestling chicks, and three adults were examined for the presence of parasites. Contracaecum spiculigerum was found in the proventriculus; Amphimerus elongatus in the liver. Piagetiella incomposita in the gular pouch; Eidmanniella pellucida, Pectinopygus farallonii, and Ceratophyllus lari in the plumage; and Theromyzon sp. in the nasal and oral cavity. Contracaecum spiculigerum was associated with ulcerative gastritis, A. elongatus with multifocal hepatitis and bile duct hyperplasia, and P. incomposita with ulcerative stomatitis, but these lesions were not considered fatal. Other diseases included beak deformity, abnormal rotation of the carpal joint, hypopigmentation, and eye loss. Overall mortality of cormorant chicks between hatching and the end of the breeding season varied from 25 to 48%. The most important causes of mortality were Newcastle disease, which killed 21% of hatched chicks in 1995, sibling competition (maximum 12% in 1994), and coyote predation (2% in 1994).  相似文献

在室内观察了小菜蛾颗粒体病毒PlutellaxylostellaGranulosisVirus(RxGV)在小菜蛾种群水平上可能的垂直传播途径。结果表明 :(1 )上代小菜蛾Plutellaxylostella(L .)幼虫期饲毒不能将小菜蛾颗粒体病垂直传递到下代 ;(2 )取食病毒的雌蛾产的卵所孵化的幼虫中 ,没病毒感染出现 ,说明病毒不能经小菜蛾成虫体内传播到下一代。 (3 )用小菜蛾颗粒体病毒处理卵卡时 ,其初孵幼虫有少量被病毒感染死亡 ,浓度高时感染率也较高 ,但感染率均在 1 0 %以下 ,说明小菜蛾颗粒体病毒能经卵表垂直传递给下代 ,但传递效率不高。但当用病毒处理叶片上的卵时 ,初孵幼虫死亡率高达 77 73 % ,而且孵化出的幼虫大多数染病且死于 3龄以前 ,因此田间病毒的施用时间可提早到卵高峰期。  相似文献

In birds, competitive abilities of siblings in relation to their sex and the magnitude of hatching delay are still poorly understood. We compared the sex-specific growth of the last-hatched, competitively disadvantaged chicks with that of synchronously hatched chicks in two successive years. Sons exhibited higher growth rates than daughters in a year with delayed onset of breeding, and this sex-related difference was more pronounced among the asynchronously hatched chicks. Females apparently do not selectively allocate more resources to the last-laid eggs because neonatal body mass and the growth rate of asynchronously hatched chicks did not differ between years, despite the fact that in one of the years, asynchronous chicks hatched from replaced eggs taken randomly from other nests and not from eggs laid last by the incubating female. Among chicks that survived, moderately asynchronous siblings grew at a lower rate than synchronous ones, whereas no difference in mass gain was revealed between synchronous and strongly asynchronous siblings irrespective of their contrasting competitive abilities. We suggest that selection of the fittest asynchronous chicks may improve the overall quality of asynchronous broods, thus favouring the maintenance of asynchronous hatching strategies in variable environments.  相似文献

From 1972–1975 Whitebreasted Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo bred at the Cedara Dam, Natal, South Africa (29 32S, 30 17E), and from 1973 they fished for food at Midmar Dam, 5 km away and carried the food back to the nestlings. Breeding occurred from April to October and was preceded by a period of courtship. Nesting material was collected by the males and the nests built by the females. The mean clutch size for 1972–1973 was 3,1. Both parents incubated the eggs and guarded the nest and chicks. Growth of the chicks was studied in 1972–1973. The mean number of chicks reared was 1,6 per nest although seven nests contained three nestlings. At 28 days they left the nest when alarmed, but could not fly until 49 days old. The average flying age appeared to be about 53 days. The height of the nests above the ground seemed to determine the nest leaving age. Of the 186 eggs laid in the 60 nests observed over two years, 74% hatched. Fledging success was 52% of eggs laid and 69% of eggs hatched. Chick mortality seemed to be caused mainly by falling from the nests and dying of starvation.  相似文献

Canine perinatal mortality is known to be relatively high. However, the literature on perinatal mortality in dogs is still sparse and often refers to a single or only a few breeds. The aim of this large-scale observational study was to describe the perinatal mortality in purebred dogs of various breeds at both puppy and litter level. In addition, the influence of breed, breed size, litter size, age of the bitch, litter number and season for whelping on the risk of perinatal mortality at litter level was studied and the mean litter size at eight days and eight wks after birth was calculated. A retrospective cohort study was performed by studying 10,810 litters of 224 breeds registered in the Norwegian Kennel Club in 2006 and 2007. Perinatal mortality was defined as the sum of stillborn puppies and puppies that died during the first wk after birth (early neonatal mortality) and was present in 24.6% of the litters. Eight percent of the puppies died before eight days after birth, with 4.3% as stillbirth and 3.7% as early neonatal mortality. For most breeds the perinatal mortality was low, but for some breeds a higher perinatal mortality was found. The mean litter size at eight days and eight wks after birth was 4.97 (±0.02) and 4.92 (±0.02) puppies, respectively. Of all puppies born, only 1% died during the period from eight days to eight wks after birth. Random effects logistic regression analysis indicated that increasing litter size and age of the bitch were associated with an increased risk of stillbirth, early neonatal mortality and total perinatal mortality at the litter level (P < 0.001). The random breed effect was significant for all outcomes. Litter number also had a significant effect on stillbirth, early neonatal mortality and total perinatal mortality at the litter level, with the highest risk of perinatal mortality found in the first litter (P < 0.001). Further, the risk of early neonatal mortality was doubled in litters with stillborn puppies. No significant effect of whelping season on perinatal mortality at litter level was found. An interaction existed between the age of the bitch and litter number and the risk of stillbirth was three times as high (odds ratio = 3.00) in litters from bitches having their first litter after the age of six y. Breed was a more important determinant of perinatal mortality in litters than breed size. However, more than 90% of the variation in perinatal mortality was found at the individual litter level and efforts to minimize puppy mortality should be targeted at the management of the individual litter rather than at the breed level.  相似文献

In the work the influence of the artificial sound stimulation during incubation on the speed of the Pekin duck breed hatching as well as on their mortality during that period was observed. The set eggs were hatched in four hatcheries. The eggs of the first two hatcheries (control groups Ka and Kb) were not sound stimulated. In the other two groups the set eggs were, from the very first hour of hatching, stimulated by the "knocking" sound from an electronic sound generator (experimental groups "a" and "b"). For the stimulation, the acoustic signal with intensity of 25 dB and frequency 5.68 Hz was applied. The fastest hatching process was recorded in the groups with sound stimulation. The "a" experimental group was the fastest, the ducks were hatched after 640.75+/-10.15 hours, in the "b" experimental group the ducks were hatched after 656.50+/-1.70 hours of incubation. In both sound stimulated experimental groups (a, b) the increased embryonic mortality resulted in the decrease of the percentage of hatchability--to 68.09+/-1.77% and 76.44+/-2.68%, respectively. This is statistically evident (P<0.01) when compared with the respective control groups which reached the 88.81+/-1.86% and 89.35+/-0.81% hatchability.  相似文献

The potential of producing viable houbara bustard Chlamydotis undulata undulata progeny with cryopreserved semen was investigated during the 1998 breeding season. Houbara semen was diluted and rapidly frozen into pellet form in LN2 using dimethylacetamide (DMA) as a cryoprotectant. Thawed semen exhibited 24.86± 10.61% recovery of fresh sperm motility levels and 36.44±16.17% of fresh viability counts. Two second‐year females were inseminated on two and three occasions, respectively, with thawed semen. One female laid four eggs between two clutches and the second female laid two eggs in a single clutch. All eggs were fertile; two developed to 18–21days but failed to pip; one chick died at pip and three chicks hatched. This is the first documented occasion that houbara bustard chicks were conceived with cryopreserved semen and it demonstrates the feasibility of using a rapid, simple, and relatively inexpensive methodology to achieve this result.
