The adoption of a specific gait sequence pattern during symmetrical locomotion has been proposed to have been a key advantage for the exploitation of the fine branch niche in early primates. Diverse aspects of primate locomotion have been extensively studied in technically equipped laboratory settings, but evolutionary conclusions derived from these investigations have rarely been verified in wild primates. Bridging the gap from the lab to the field, we conducted an actual performance determination of symmetrical gaits in two free-ranging tamarin species (Saguinus mystax and Saguinus fuscicollis) of Amazonian Peru by analyzing high-speed video recordings of naturally occurring locomotor bouts. Tamarins arguably represent viable models for aspects of early primate locomotion. We tested three specific hypotheses derived from laboratory studies to test for the influence of support size and orientation and to gain further insight into the functional significance of primate gait sequence patterns: (1) The tamarins utilize symmetrical gaits at a higher rate on small supports than on larger ones. (2) During symmetrical locomotion on small supports, diagonal sequences are utilized at a higher rate than on larger supports. (3) On inclines, diagonal sequences are predominantly used and on declines, lateral sequences are predominantly used. Our results corroborated hypotheses 1 and 3. We found no clear support for hypothesis 2. In conclusion, our results add to the notion that primate gait plasticity, rather than uniform adoption of diagonal sequence gaits, enabled early primates to accommodate different support types and effectively exploit the small branch niche. 相似文献

South American capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) have been included in a series of nonhuman primates under evaluation for their potential use as models in a study of the basic biology of Schistosoma haematobium. Emphasis has been given to involvement of the urogenital system, a prominent feature of infection in man. Preliminary observations on Cebus apella with moderate numbers of S. haematobium from Iran showed that there may be serious involvement of the urogenital system with development of pronounced hydronephrosis accompanied by pathobiological alteration of the urinary bladder, ureters, and kidneys. There were heavy deposits of parasite eggs in the major viscera. 相似文献

One of the most distinctive aspects of primate quadrupedal walking is the use of diagonal sequence footfalls in combination with diagonal-couplets interlimb timing. Numerous hypotheses have been offered to explain why primates might have evolved this type of gait, yet this important question remains unresolved. Because infant primates use a wider variety of quadrupedal gaits than do adults, they provide a natural experiment with which to test hypotheses about the evolution of unique aspects of primate quadrupedalism. In this study, we present kinematic data on two infant baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in order to test the recent hypothesis that diagonal sequence, diagonal couplets walking might have evolved in primates because their limb positioning provides stability in a small branch environment (Cartmill et al. [2002] Zool J Linn Soc 136:401-420). To assess hindlimb position at the moment of forelimb touchdown, we measured hindlimb angular excursion and ankle position for 84 walking strides, across three different types of gaits (diagonal sequence, diagonal couplets (DSDC); lateral sequence lateral couplets (LSLC); and lateral sequence diagonal couplets (LSDC)). Results indicate that if a forelimb were to contact an unstable substrate, LSLC walking provides as much, and perhaps more, stability when compared to DSDC walking. Therefore, it appears that this moment in a stride was unlikely to be a particularly important selective factor in the evolution of DSDC walking. Further insight into this issue will likely be gained by observations of primate quadrupedalism in natural environments, where the use of lateral sequence gaits might be more common than currently known. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to produce tumors in the large intestine of Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus apella) by the administration of the colonotropic carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). The subjects were 12 monkeys, all males, age 30 months, with a mean weight of 2.858 kg. The DMH was administered subcutaneously to six of the monkeys at a dosage of 25 mg/kg of body weight once a week for 16 weeks; control monkeys received an equivalent volume of the stock solution without DMH. Twenty months after administration of the first dose, the animals were sacrificed. None of the monkeys showed intestinal tumors. Samples of the gastrointestinal tract were removed, fixed, and stained according to standard histological techniques. Histological changes were seen in all of the DMH-treated animals; these consisted of glandular hyperplasia and hyperplasia of the epithelium overlying the lymphoid nodules. In addition, foci of dysplasia were found in three of the animals. Our results suggest that the DMH induced pre-neoplastic changes, characterized by hyperplasia and dysplasia, in the mucosa of the large intestine. 相似文献

Our current knowledge about the forces leapers generate and absorb is very limited and based exclusively on rigid force platform measurements. In their natural environments, however, leapers take off and land on branches and tree trunks, and these may be compliant. We evaluated the influence of substrate properties on leaping kinetics in prosimian leapers by using a combined field and laboratory approach. Tree sway and the timing of takeoffs relative to the movements of trees were documented for animals under natural conditions in Madagascar. Field data collected on three species (Indriindri, Propithecus diadema, Propithecus verreauxi) indicate that in the majority of takeoffs, the substrate sways and the animals takeoff before the elastic rebound of the substrate. This implies that force is “wasted” to deform supports. Takeoff and landing forces were measured in an experimental setting with a compliant force pole at the Duke University Primate Center. Forces were recorded for 2 Propithecus verreauxi and 3 Hapalemur griseus. Peak takeoff forces were 9.6 (P. verreauxi) and 10.3 (H. griseus) times body weight, whereas peak landing forces were 6.7 (P. verreauxi) and 8.4 (H. griseus) times body weight. As part of the impulse generated does not translate into leaping distance but is used to deform the pole, greater effort is required to reach a given target substrate, and, consequently, takeoff forces are high. The landing forces, on the other hand, are damped by the pole/substrate yield that increases the time available for deceleration. Our results contrast with previous studies of leaping forces recorded with rigid platform measuring systems that usually report higher landing than takeoff forces. We conclude that 1) Leapers generate and are exposed to exceptionally high locomotory forces. The takeoff forces are higher than the landing forces when using compliant supports, indicating that the takeoff rather than the landing may be critical in interpreting leaping behavior and related aspects of muscu-loskeletal design. 2) Large-bodied vertical clingers and leapers do not usually take advantage of the elastic energy stored in substrates. Rather, force (and energy) is wasted to deform compliant supports. 3) A compliant force pole approximates the conditions faced by large-bodied vertical clingers and leapers in the wild more closely than do rigid force platforms. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the requirement of luteal progesterone or luteal estrogen for the establishment of pregnancy in the Cebus monkey and to test in a primate species the synergism between RU 486 and letrozole (LTZ) found in rodents for inhibiting implantation. Exposure of target tissues to either hormone was suppressed during the mid-luteal phase of mating cycles by subcutaneous administration of the antiprogestin (RU 486), the aromatase inhibitor LTZ or the antiestrogen (ICI 182780) on days 4-7 of the luteal phase. Administration of 0.1 or 0.5 mg/kg of LTZ on days 5-7 of the luteal phase caused a profound drop in the levels of E(2) in all animals, whereas administration of ICI 182780 0.2 mg/kg on days 4-6 of the luteal phase had the opposite effect. The pregnancy rate in vehicle treated cycles of the same females was (58.3%). Treatment with RU 486, 0.8 mg/kg/day on days 5-7 of the luteal phase-induced endometrial bleeding in 3/5 mated females none of which became pregnant, whereas pregnancy was confirmed in one of the two animals that did not bled. Treatment with RU 486, 0.4 mg/kg/day alone or with LTZ on days 5-7 or ICI 182780 alone, on days 4-6 of the luteal phase failed to induce bleeding, allowing the establishment of pregnancy in 50.0-66.6% of the animals in these groups. We conclude that in Cebus monkeys, progesterone but not luteal estradiol is required for the establishment of pregnancy and that RU 486 and LTZ do not exhibit in this species the synergism found in rodents. 相似文献

Cebus albifrons and Cebus apella, partially sympatric capuchin monkeys from South America, are known to differ substantially in adult body mass and bodily proportions. C. apella possesses a robust, stocky build in contrast to the more gracile, relatively longer limbed body design of C. albifrons. Average birth weights and adult body lengths of these two congeners, however, are remarkably similar and do not serve to distinguish them. This study examines longitudinal growth rates and patterns of ontogenetic scaling in the extremities (humerus, radius, hand, femur, tibia, foot) in order to document the nature and magnitude of skeletal changes associated with increasing age and body mass. Our data indicate that the growth rates of the six skeletal components of the limbs differ only slightly and somewhat inconsistently between the two species. Body mass, however, increases at a consistently faster rate in C. apella. Relative to body mass, therefore, the extremities of C. albifrons scale much faster than those of C. apella. This implies that at any given postnatal body mass, C. albifrons is longer limbed than C. apella. Conversely, C. apella is heavier than C. albifrons at any given limb length or age. We suggest that such differences in body mass distribution are causally related to differences in locomotor behavior and foraging strategies. Specifically, the relatively long-limbed C. albifrons is probably more cursorial and tends to travel longer distances each day than C. apella. C. apella is a much more deliberate quadruped and is also characterized by especially vigorous and powerful foraging and feeding behaviors. We also compare our results to other (mostly cross-sectional) studies of skeletal growth allometry in nonhuman primates. 相似文献

Chromosome studies in six wild-caught specimens of Cebus apella xanthosternos showed a distinctive chromosome pair number 11 that made it possible to distinguish this subspecies from other Cebus apella. The characteristic chromosome pair had intercalar heterochromatin unlike the “standard” chromosome type of Cebus apella and other species of the same genus, in which this chromosome pair shows a large, terminal, heterochromatic block. A comparison at the chromosomal level between different Cebus apella populations suggests that chromosome 11 in Cebus apella xanthosternos is a derived chromosome that has probably become fixed in this subspecies, either by selection or by drift in a small isolated population. 相似文献

The coordination of limb movements during mammalian locomotion has been well documented in the literature. Most mammals use lateral sequence (LS) gaits, in which a forelimb follows an ipsilateral hind limb during the stride cycle. Primates, however, tend to utilize diagonal sequence (DS) gaits, whereby a contralateral forelimb follows a given hind limb during the stride cycle. A number of scenarios have been offered to explain why primates favor DS gaits, most of them relating to the use of the arboreal habitat and, in particular, the exploitation of a terminal branch niche. Yet to date, there is surprisingly little evidence to support the advantage of DS gaits for negotiating different aspects of the terminal branch environment. Nonetheless, it is apparent that primates possess unique morphologies and a higher than typically recognized degree of flexibility in gait sequence pattern, both of which likely offer advantages for moving upon discontinuous and unstable terminal branches. This paper reviews potential explanations for the use of DS gaits in primates and considers mechanisms by which gait sequence may be altered during different types of arboreal challenges. 相似文献

Mammalian locomotion is characterized by the frequent use of in-phase gaits in which the footfalls of the left and right fore- or hindlimbs are unevenly spaced in time. Although previous studies have identified a functional differentiation between the first limb (trailing limb) and the second limb (leading limb) to touch the ground during terrestrial locomotion, the influence of a horizontal branch on limb function has never been explored. To determine the functional differences between trailing and leading forelimbs during locomotion on the ground and on a horizontal branch, X-ray motion analysis and force measurements were carried out in two European red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris, Rodentia). The differences observed between trailing and leading forelimbs were minimal during terrestrial locomotion, where both limbs fulfill two functions and go through a shock-absorbing phase followed by a generating phase. During locomotion on a horizontal branch, European red squirrels reduce speed and all substrate reaction forces transmitted may be due to the reduction of vertical oscillation of the center of mass. Further adjustments during locomotion on a horizontal branch differ significantly between trailing and leading forelimbs and include limb flexion, lead intervals, limb protraction and vertical displacement of the scapular pivot. Consequently, trailing and leading forelimbs perform different functions. Trailing forelimbs function primarily as shock-absorbing elements, whereas leading forelimbs are characterized by a high level of stiffness. This functional differentiation indicates that European red squirrels ‘test’ the substrate for stability with the trailing forelimb, while the leading forelimb responds to or counteracts swinging or snapping branches. 相似文献

Salivary and plasma progesterone were measured in normally cycling (n=10) and castrated (n=4) femaleCebus monkeys (Cebus apella). During the follicular phase, progesterone levels in saliva ranged between 0.05 and 1.40 ng/ml and in the luteal phase they
increased to between 0.22 and 4.70 ng/ml. These values represented on average 6.5 and 3.2% of those values measured in plasma,
for the follicular and luteal phases, respectively. The regression analysis of the steroid concentrations in both fluids showed
a highly significant correlation (r=0.8985,n=180,P<0.0001). Ovariectomized monkeys had consistently low salivary (0.37±0.02 ng/ml) and plasma (4.70±0.25 ng/ml) progesterone,
showing a low, but significnat, correlation coefficient (r=0.2592,n=58,P=0.047). The ratio of plasma/salivary progesterone was significantly higher in the luteal phase (31.09±1.65) than in the follicular
phase (23.06±2.26) and in castrated monkeys (16.00±1.38). The free fraction of progesterone constituted 5.3±0.2% of the total
plasma progesterone during the follicular phase and 3.3±0.1% during the luteal phase. Ovariectomized monkeys showed a significantly
higher percentage of free progesterone in plasma (7.7±0.1%). In contrast, free progesterone made up 64.4 and 70.9% of the
total salivary progesterone for the follicular and luteal phases, respectively. The proportion of free progesterone in castrated
animals was within the range observed in cycling animals. We suggest that the levels of progesterone in the saliva of capuchin
monkey follow a pattern similar to that for plasma progesterone, reflecting the free steroid fraction. Thus, the measurement
of such steroid in saliva may offer a valuable alternative to plasma determinations for the assessment of the ovarian function
inCebus and probably other New World monkey species. 相似文献

A primate model of leishmaniasis was developed with the objective of future vaccine testing. Lesion development and immunological parameters were studied upon primary and secondary infections. Seven Cebus apella were injected subcutaneously with 2×106 Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis promastigotes. Erythematous nodules appeared 19–29 days p.i., which disappeared 100 days p.i. Four months later, six of the monkeys were challenged with the same inoculum; three of them developed erythematous nodules after 7 days p.i., with ulcer formation in two of these subjects. The lesions were short-lived and all were cured 40 days post challenge. Anti-Leishmania IgG antibodies were detected and they increased after the challenge infection. Leishmania antigen-induced lymphoproliferation was found 1 month post-primary infection, which coincided with IFN-γ production and lesion development. It decreased to control levels afterwards, but at the time of the challenge dose, it was significantly above the initial level. After the challenge infection, it first increased then decreased sharply at 40 days post-challenge, coinciding with the healing of the lesion. It increased again to a higher level at 60 days post-challenge. Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis-infection in C. apella did not induce complete protection against a secondary infection with a homologous parasite although specific antibody production and lymphoproliferation with IFN-γ production were observed. This fact indicates that vaccine has to be better than infection in the induction of protective immunity, and raises a question on in vitro parameters that should be considered as a counterpart of expected protection induced by vaccine candidate. In addition, we conclude that this is a useful primate model for the evaluation of candidate vaccines. 相似文献

An important computational technique for extracting the wealth of information hidden in human genomic sequence data is to compare the sequence with that from the corresponding region of the mouse genome, looking for segments that are conserved over evolutionary time. Moreover, the approach generalises to comparison of sequences from any two related species. The underlying rationale (which is abundantly confirmed by observation) is that a random mutation in a functional region is usually deleterious to the organism, and hence unlikely to become fixed in the population, whereas mutations in a non-functional region are free to accumulate over time. The potential value of this approach is so attractive that the public and private projects to sequence the human genome are now turning to sequencing the mouse, and you will soon be able to compare the human and mouse sequences of your favourite genomic region. We are currently witnessing an explosion of computer tools for comparative analysis of two genomic sequences. Here the capabilities of two new network servers for comparing genomic sequences from any pair of closely related species are sketched. The Syntenic Gene Prediction Program SGP-I utilises sequence comparisons to enhance the ability to locate protein coding segments in genomic data. Brosnan and de Waal [Nature 425:297-299, 2003] reported that capuchin monkeys responded negatively to unequal reward distributions between themselves and another individual when comparing their own rewards with that of their partner. It was suggested that social emotions provided the underlying motivation for such behavior and that this inequity aversion is specific to the social domain. However, alternative hypotheses such as the "frustration effect" or the "food expectation hypothesis" may provide more parsimonious explanations for Brosnan and de Waal's [Nature 425:297-299] results, while others have argued that these findings are not congruent with the Fehr-Schmidt inequity aversion model cited by the authors. The claim that inequity aversion behavior is specific to the social domain has also been questioned, as primates also develop expectations about rewards in the absence of partners, and react negatively when those expectations are violated. In this study, a modified Dictator game was used to investigate whether capuchins would exhibit either disadvantageous inequity aversion behavior or reference-dependent expectancy violation in social and nonsocial conditions, respectively. When given the choice between an equitable and an inequitable outcome, the subjects showed disadvantageous inequity aversion behavior, choosing the equitable outcome significantly more in the social condition. In the nonsocial condition, however, subjects did not show negative expectancy violation resulting from the formation of reference-dependent expectations, choosing the equitable outcome at chance levels. These results suggest that capuchins attend to differential payoffs and that they are averse to inequity, which is disadvantageous to themselves. 相似文献

Human joint torques during gait are usually computed using inverse dynamics. This method requires a skeletal model, kinematics and measured ground reaction forces and moments (GRFM). Measuring GRFM is however only possible in a controlled environment. This paper introduces a probabilistic method based on probabilistic principal component analysis to estimate the joint torques for healthy gait without measured GRFM. A gait dataset of 23 subjects was obtained containing kinematics, measured GRFM and joint torques from inverse dynamics in order to obtain a probabilistic model. This model was then used to estimate the joint torques of other subjects without measured GRFM. Only kinematics, a skeletal model and timing of gait events are needed. Estimation only takes 0.28 ms per time instant. Using cross-validation, the resulting root mean square estimation errors for the lower-limb joint torques are found to be approximately 0.1 Nm/kg, which is 6–18% of the range of the ground truth joint torques. Estimated joint torque and GRFM errors are up to two times smaller than model-based state-of-the-art methods. Model-free artificial neural networks can achieve lower errors than our method, but are less repeatable, do not contain uncertainty information on the estimates and are difficult to use in situations which are not in the learning set. In contrast, our method performs well in a new situation where the walking speed is higher than in the learning dataset. The method can for example be used to estimate the kinetics during overground walking without force plates, during treadmill walking without (separate) force plates and during ambulatory measurements. 相似文献

This research examined the use of naturally-occurring metal tools by monkeys. We presented groups of capuchins (Cebus apella) with copper nuggets and apparatus that accommodated the use of tools to crack open nuts and penetrate barriers. Six of fourteen
monkeys placed copper nuggets in forceful contact with hard surfaces. Five of these animals used copper nuggets to crack open
nuts and penetrate acetate. In follow-up tests capuchins preferred stone tools over copper tools, and used an iron meteorite
as a multi-purpose tool. We hypothesize that human metal-tool technology probably came about as a consequence of existing
stone-tool practices. 相似文献

Most primates typically use a diagonal-sequence footfall pattern during walking. This footfall pattern, which is unusual for mammals, is believed to have originated in ancestral primates in association with the use of grasping extremities for movement and foraging on thin, flexible branches. This theory was tested by comparing gait parameters between the grey short-tailed opossum Monodelphis domestica and the woolly opossum Caluromys philander , two didelphid marsupials that are strongly differentiated in grasping morphology of the extremities and in their reliance on foraging strategies involving thin branches. One hundred and thirty gait cycles were analysed quantitatively from videotapes of subjects moving quadrupedally on a runway and on poles of different diameters (7 and 28 mm). Duty factor (i.e. duration of the stance phase as a percentage of the stride period) for the forelimb and hindlimb, as well as diagonality (i.e. phase relationship between the forelimb and hindlimb cycles), were calculated for each of these symmetrical gait cycles. We found that the highly terrestrial Monodelphis , like most other non-primate mammals, relies primarily on lateral-sequence walking gaits on both runway and poles, and has relatively higher forelimb duty factors. Like primates, the highly arboreal Caluromys uses primarily diagonal-sequence walking gaits on the runway and pole, with relatively higher hindlimb duty factors and diagonality. The fact that the woolly opossum, a marsupial with primate-like feet that moves and forages mainly on thin branches, uses primarily diagonal-sequence gaits when walking supports the view that primate gaits evolved to meet the demands of locomotion on narrow supports. This also demonstrates the functional role of a grasping foot, in association with relatively higher hindlimb duty factors, protraction, and substrate reaction forces, in the production of such walking gaits. 相似文献
