Fine needle aspiration cytology in ovarian lesions: an institutional experience of 584 cases Objective: To assess the diagnostic value of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in ovarian lesions. Methods: This was a retrospective study of ultrasound‐guided (US) FNAC of 584 ovarian lesions from January 1998 to July 2010. The lesions were categorized into non‐neoplastic lesions, neoplastic lesions and inadequate aspirates. The results were compared with the corresponding histopathology whenever available. Results: Of the 584 lesions, 180 (30.8%) were reported as non‐neoplastic (48 non‐specific inflammation, 11 tuberculosis, 63 functional cysts and 58 endometriotic cysts), 249 (42.6%) as neoplastic (81 benign lesions/tumours and 168 malignant) and 155 (26.5%) as inadequate. Based on the subsequent histopathology, which was available in 121 (20.7%), the cases were divided into those that were concordant and discordant. Concordant cases comprised 92/121 (76%), including 28 non‐neoplastic lesions (seven non‐specific inflammation, nine functional cysts and 12 endometriotic cysts), 42 surface epithelial tumours (13 benign and 29 malignant), 10 germ cell tumours (five mature cystic teratomas and five mixed germ cell tumours), seven sex‐cord stromal tumours (three granulosa cell tumours, one sclerosing stromal tumour, one strümal leutoma, one Sertoli Leydig cell tumour and one malignant Sertoli cell tumour) and five miscellaneous lesions (one plasma cell tumour, two leiomyosarcomas and two cases of necrosis). Discordant cases comprised 29/121 (24%) (21were inconclusive or inadequate on cytology), including four endometriotic cysts, 14 surface epithelial tumours (one cystadenofibroma, one borderline mucinous tumour and 12 carcinomas), five germ cell tumours (two immature teratomas and three mature cystic teratomas), two thecomas, one fibroma, one sclerosing stromal tumour, one fibrosarcoma and one myxoma. FNAC sensitivity for a diagnosis of malignancy was 85.7%, specificity 98.0%, positive predictive value 97.7%, negative predictive value 87.7% and accuracy 92.0%, if 21 inconclusive/inadequate FNACs were excluded; with the latter taken as false negatives, sensitivity was 73.7% and accuracy 76.0%. Conclusion: FNAC has a high specificity for diagnosis of ovarian/adnexal lesions but greater experience is required for the accurate subtyping of neoplasms and sensitivity is limited by inconclusive/inadequate results.  相似文献

AIM: The aim of the study was to determine values of a quantitative morphometry analysis of nuclear characteristics and argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in differential cytodiagnosis of benign, atypically proliferating (borderline) and malignant serous ovarian tumours. METHODS: Cytological imprints of benign (n = 20), borderline (n = 19) and malignant (n = 20) ovarian serous tumours were analysed. A computerized, digital analysis was used to determine morphometric nuclear features, the number and characteristics of single AgNORs, cluster AgNORs, total AgNOR and AgNOR area/nucleus (relative area) ratio. According to their size AgNORs were classified in three categories. A one-way variance analysis and post hoc test (Scheffé) were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The morphometric nuclear analysis showed that benign, borderline and malignant serous ovarian tumours are statistically different (P < 0.001) according to the area and outline, the values being highest in malignant tumours and lowest in the borderline group. Digital analysis of AgNORs in benign, borderline and malignant groups showed that the total AgNOR number increases with progression of the lesion (meaning tumour malignancy) significantly (P < 0.001) between benign and malignant as well as between borderline and malignant serous ovarian tumours (P < 0.001). The progression of the lesion malignancy was accompanied by a significant (P < 0.001) progressive increase of the total and relative AgNOR area per nucleus. The AgNOR size increases from benign to malignant tumours and a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) was observed in all three groups regarding small and large AgNORs. CONCLUSION: Combining different markers of morphometric nuclear characteristics and AgNOR values could improve differential cytodiagnosis of benign, borderline and malignant serous ovarian tumours.  相似文献

Background

Mammary tumours frequently develop in female domestic cats being highly malignant in a large percentage of cases. Chemokines regulate many physiological and pathological processes including organogenesis, chemotaxis of inflammatory cells, as well as tumour progression and metastasization. In particular, the chemokine/receptor pair SDF-1/CXCR4 has been involved in the regulation of metastatic potential of neoplastic cells, including breast cancer. The aim of this study was the immunohistochemical defininition of the expression profile of CXCR4 in primary and metastatic feline mammary carcinomas and the evaluation of the role of SDF-1 in feline mammary tumour cell proliferation.

Results

A total of 45 mammary surgical samples, including 33 primary tumours (31 carcinomas and 2 adenomas), 6 metastases, and 4 normal mammary tissues were anlyzed. Tumor samples were collected from a total number of 26 animals, as in some cases concurrent occurrence of neoplasm in more than one mammary gland was observed. Tissues were processed for standard histological examination, and all lesions were classified according to the World Health Organization criteria. CXCR4 expression in neoplastic cells was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The level of CXCR4 immunoreactivity was semi-quantitatively estimated as CXCR4 score evaluating both the number of positive cells and the intensity of staining. Six primary, fibroblast-free primary cultures were obtained from fresh feline mammary carcinomas and characterized by immunofluorescence for CXCR4 and malignant mammary cell marker expression. SDF-1-dependent in vitro proliferative effects were also assayed. CXCR4 expression was observed in 29 out of 31 malignant tissues with a higher CXCR4 score observed in 4 out of 6 metastatic lesions than in the respective primary tumours. In 2 benign lesions analyzed, only the single basaloid adenoma showed a mild positive immunostaining against CXCR4. Normal tissue did not show CXCR4 immunoreactivity. CXCR4 score was statistically significantly associated with the histological features of the samples, showing an increase accordingly with the degree of neoplastic transformation (from normal tissue to metastatic lesions). Finally, in the primary cultures obtained from 6 primary feline mammary carcinomas CXCR4 expression was detected in all cells and its activation by SDF-1 in vitro treatment caused a significant increase in the proliferation rate in 5 out of 6 tumours.

Conclusions

These results indicate that malignant feline mammary tumours commonly express CXCR4, with a higher level in malignant tumours, and, in most of the cases analysed, metastatic cells display stronger immunoreactivity for CXCR4 than the corresponding primary tumours. Moreover, CXCR4 activation in primary cultures of feline mammary carcinomas causes increase in the proliferative rate. Thus, SDF-1/CXCR4 system seems to play a tumorigenic in feline mammary gland malignancy and in vitro cultures from these tumour samples may represent an experimental model to investigate the biological and pharmacological role of this chemokinergic axis.  相似文献

Evaluation of aspiration cytology of ovarian masses with histopathological correlation Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and diagnostic accuracy of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in distinguishing non‐neoplastic and neoplastic ovarian lesions and to determine reliable cytological criteria for typing neoplastic ovarian masses into benign and malignant tumours and their subtypes. Methods: FNAC was performed on 50 patients diagnosed as having an ovarian mass clinically and/or ultrasonographically. Detailed history, clinical examination and ultrasound findings in each case were recorded. The cytological diagnoses were categorized as neoplastic and non‐neoplastic and further into benign and malignant neoplasms. These cytological diagnoses were then compared subsequently with the histopathological diagnoses. Results: The study material consisted of 57 aspirates from 50 patients. A comparison of cytological findings with the histological diagnosis was possible in 53 aspirates; in the remaining four cases (7%) the smears were acellular. On cytology, 31 lesions were diagnosed as neoplastic and 22 as non‐neoplastic. The overall sensitivity of cytology in diagnosing neoplastic and non‐neoplastic ovarian lesions was 93.9% and the specificity was 100%. The positive predictive value was 100% and negative predictive value 90.9%. The overall diagnostic accuracy was 96.2 %. Conclusion: FNAC of ovarian masses is a minimally invasive procedure that can differentiate neoplastic from non‐neoplastic ovarian lesions. It may help avoid unnecessary operations and preserve the reproductive ability in young patients. Furthermore, it also enables a satisfactory sub‐categorization of ovarian tumours, which facilitates the choice of appropriate therapy.  相似文献

BackgroundOvarian cancer is one of the most frequent types of gynaecological malignancy among women. Despite the advances in diagnostic techniques, ovarian tumours are still detected at a late stage, thus the survival rate is very low. Iron is an essential metal in the human body, yet its potential role in ovarian carcinogenesis is yet to be determined. The aim of this study was to check if iron oxidation state in tissue and cystic fluid can be treated as an indicator of the malignancy of the ovarian tumours. Another aspect of this study was to investigate the role of iron in carcinogenesis mechanism in ovarian tumour transformation.MethodsSynchrotron radiation X-ray absorption near edge structure (SR-XANES) spectroscopy was used to analyze the human ovarian tumour tissues and cystic fluids of different types and grades of malignancy. Fresh, non-fixed, frozen samples were used to analyze the state of iron oxidation in all the biological materials. The samples were obtained from patients requiring surgical intervention. The High Energy X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XANES) measurements were performed at the beamline P65 at Petra III Extension, DESY – Deutsches Elektronen - Synchrotron.ResultsFe XANES spectra were collected at selected points of a few different regions of the samples. For each specimen, an average of these points was probed. Having been measured, the spectra were compared with organic and inorganic reference materials. Also, the position of the absorption edge was calculated using the integration method. In all specimens, iron occurred in the oxidation states, Fe2+ and Fe3+, although the fraction of iron in the third oxidation state was substantial, especially in malignant cases. The results also show differences in the chemical form of iron in the tissue and cystic fluids of the same patient.ConclusionsThe cryo-XANES measurement carried out for ovarian cancer tissues and cystic fluids showed changes in the chemical form of iron between non-malignant and malignant tumours. For both types of sample can be observed that they contain iron on second and iron on third oxidation state. Moreover, the tendency was observed that malignant tumours of the ovary contain a larger fraction of iron in the second oxidation state compared to non-malignant ones.  相似文献

Summary Lymphocytes infiltrating human ovarian carcinoma obtained directly from the tumour mass (tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes, TIL) or from the carcinomatous ascites (tumour-associated lymphocytes, TAL) were expanded in vitro in long-term cultures with interleukin-2 and tested for their specific cytolytic activity. Killing of the autologous tumour was detected only in a proportion of the patients, less frequently in TIL compared to TAL. In fact two out of ten TIL and four out of nine TAL cultures tested showed significant levels of lysis against the autologous tumour. This cytotoxic activity was not restricted to the autologous tumour, as other tumour cell lines, including non-ovarian ones, were lysed as well. The cultures that were not cytotoxic against the autologous tumour were in most cases able to lyse other tumour cell lines of ovarian or other histology. Cloning of TIL from one patient was performed: of 22 clones tested, 4 displayed higher cytotoxicity against the autologous tumour compared to the uncloned population and 3 out of these 4 did not kill an irrelevant carcinoma cell line. In order to stimulate the expansion of putative specific effectors we performed mixed lymphocyte/tumour cultures (MLTC) with autologous or allogeneic tumour cells. No stimulation of cytotoxicity against the autologous tumour was detected after MLTC in nine different TAL populations, using autologous or allogeneic tumours as stimulators. On the contrary, peripheral blood lymphocytes from two patients after MLTC with the autologous tumour showed increased killing of the autologous and decreased killing of an allogeneic target. In conclusion TIL and TAL from ovarian carcinoma expanded in vitro with interleukin-2 usually have non-MHC-restricted cytotoxicity and variable degrees of reactivity against the autologous tumour. A preferential killing for the autologous tumour was not observed even after MLTC. These results do not exclude the existence of tumour-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes in ovarian carcinoma; nevertheless they suggest that putative specific effectors have very low frequency and that culture techniques for expanding their growth more selectively are still to be optimized.  相似文献

Multicellular tumour spheroids were prepared from a total of 46 human brain tumour biopsies by collagenase digestion and plating into agar coated flasks. Both primary malignant and secondary tumours formed spheroids with some correlation between the malignancy of tumour and the ability to undergo spheroid formation. The spheroids were capable of progressive growth, the rate of which was dependent, to some extent, on environmental conditions and was reflected by an increase in cell number within the spheroids. Spheroids prepared in this way may prove to be useful models for in vitro chemosensitivity and the general biology of brain tumours.  相似文献

Borderline ovarian tumors are a low grade form of epithelial ovarian carcinoma with a low rate of growth and a low potential to invade or metastasize. According to the new World Health Organization classification, these tumors are placed between clearly benign and obviously malignant tumors because they exhibit some, but not all, of the morphologic features of malignancy. For a distinction between borderline lesions and cystadenomas or carcinomas, 2 criteria are of the utmost importance: presence of nuclear atypia and absence of stromal invasion. The pathologic subtype ofperitoneal implants is probably one of the main prognosticfactors in patients with serous tumors of low malignant potential, while the prognostic value of micropapillary serous carcinoma in patients with noninvasive implants remains debatable. Although fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the most accurate diagnostic method in cytopathology, its value in the diagnosis of borderline lesions is limited, mainly because of its inability to establish the absence of stromal invasion. The diagnostic accuracy of RNA can be improved by supplementing cytologic examination with such diagnostic techniques as immunocytochemistry and cytometry.  相似文献

Ovarian carcinoma is the most lethal gynaecological malignancy, most tumours being advanced at presentation. However, little is known about precursor lesions and the cell of origin of epithelial ovarian malignancy. In this review, the proposed cell of origin is discussed as well as recent molecular data relating to ovarian cancers of different morphological types. It is stressed that ovarian carcinoma is a heterogeneous group of neoplasms with several different morphological types, each with their own underlying molecular genetic events. Recent data suggest that mucinous ovarian cancers and a small subset of serous cancers (low grade ovarian serous carcinoma) develop through a well-defined adenoma-carcinoma sequence while the much more common high grade ovarian serous carcinoma develops de novo from the ovarian surface epithelium or the epithelium of cortical inclusion cysts. The realisation that various morphological types of epithelial ovarian cancer are associated with different molecular genetic events is a major advance in the study of ovarian cancer. It can be anticipated that this will lead to the development of specific therapeutic agents of value against a specific tumour type.  相似文献

Experimental and epidemiological evidence has implicated environmental factors in the increasing incidence of bladder cancer. Papillary tumours are less malignant than solid. Of 36 patients with papillary growths in the renal pelvis, 20 lived five years but 11 of 15 with solid tumours died within one year.Social and geographical influences have affected the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the kidney. Experimentally it has been produced by hormones, carcinogens, viruses and irradiation. Clinically the most adverse factor was histological anaplasia; renal vein invasion was three times as common in high-grade tumours. The postoperative five-year survival was 30 out of 42 patients with low-grade lesions but 12 out of 42 with high-grade lesions. In the case of low malignancy tumours without adverse factors, 25 out of 29 patients survived for five years. This unpredictable behaviour is characteristic of urinary tract tumours.  相似文献

The clinical value and limitations of a previously described cytomorphometric method, based on nuclear size and anisonucleosis, for evaluation of routine fine-needle aspiration of the breast were assessed in a series of 313 histologically investigated primary breast lesions. Limitations were analyzed by histomorphometry and DNA flow cytometry in 116 consecutive cases of histologically confirmed breast carcinoma. Eighty per cent of histologically proven malignant tumours were classified cytomorphometrically as malignant and no false-positive results were encountered. For benign lesions a benign cytomorphometric classification was reached in 66% of the cases. Histomorphometry showed that on the whole the assignment of histologically malignant tumours to a non-malignant cytomorphometric classification was determined by smaller nuclei and not by sampling error. Tumours assigned to a malignant cytomorphometric classification had on average significantly higher DNA indices than did tumours not assigned to a malignant cytomorphometric classification (P less than 0.001). The mean-nuclear areas in cytomorphometry and histomorphometry were strongly correlated with DNA indices indicated by DNA flow cytometry (P less than 0.001 for both). The present findings show that this cytomorphometric method is appropriate for routine quality control of a cytological diagnosis of malignancy in FNA of the breast. However, an inconclusive result in 15-25% of the tumours is inevitable.  相似文献

Highly aneuploid tumours are common in epithelial ovarian cancers (EOC). We investigated whether NuMA expression was associated with this phenomenon.NuMA protein levels in normal and tumour tissues, ovarian cell lines and primary cultures of malignant cells derived from ovarian ascitic fluids were analysed by Affymetrix microarray analysis, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF), with results correlated to associated clinical data. Aneuploidy status in primary cultures was determined by FACS analysis.Affymetrix microarray data indicated that NuMA was overexpressed in tumour tissue, primary cultures and cell lines compared to normal ovarian tissue. IHC revealed low to weak NuMA expression in normal tissues. Expression was upregulated in tumours, with a significant association with disease stage in mucinous EOC subtypes (p = 0.009), lymph node involvement (p = 0.03) and patient age (p = 0.04). Additional discontinuous data analysis revealed that high NuMA levels in tumours decreased with grade (p = 0.02) but increased with disease stage (p = 0.04) in serous EOC. NuMA expression decreased in late disease stage 4 endometrioid EOCs. High NuMA levels decreased with increased tumour invasion in all subtypes (p = 0.03). IF of primary cultures revealed that high NuMA levels at mitotic spindle poles were significantly associated with a decreased proportion of cells in cytokinesis (p = 0.05), increased binucleation (p = 0.021) and multinucleation (p = 0.007), and aneuploidy (p = 0.008).NuMA is highly expressed in EOC tumours and high NuMA levels correlate with increases in mitotic defects and aneuploidy in primary cultures.  相似文献

The primary challenge in the management of a multinodular thyroid gland is to rule out malignancy. The present study was undertaken to assess the value of preoperative ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in diagnosing tumours of the thyroid gland. Of the 80 patients operated for multinodular lesions, malignant tumours were found in 29 and benign tumours in 36 patients (81%) and non-tumorous lesions in 15 (19%) patients. Compared with the histopathological postoperative diagnosis, the overall sensitivity of FNAC was 85% and specificity 88%. Current morphological diagnosis of the nodules in multinodular goitre requires thorough preoperative examination, including ultrasound-guided FNAC in order to establish the appropriate management.  相似文献

The most common human brain tumours - gliomas - have poor prognosis with and without treatment. The current therapy conditions act sub-lethally and cannot effectively suppress the proliferation of glioma cells. Here we show differential protein expression patterns in surviving human malignant U87-MG glioma cells under clinically relevant chemo/radiotherapy. In parallel experiments, the cells underwent either irradiation (2 Gy, 200 KV X-ray) or chemotreatment with 30 microg/mL of temozolomide in the cultivation medium or combined chemo/radiation treatment. The cell cultures were treated during 5 days from day 4 until day 9 of growth. Modulated expression patterns of vimentin and RhoA GTPase indicate a potentially increasing grade of malignancy in treated cell fractions correlating well with extremely aggressive tumour phenotypes observed clinically at recidivation of treated malignant gliomas.  相似文献

An understanding of the mechanism that controls growth and differentiation in normal cells would seem to be an essential requirement to elucidate the origin and reversibility of malignancy. For this approach I have mainly used normal and leukemic blood cells, and in most studies have used myeloid blood cells as a model system. Our development of systems for the in vitro cloning and clonal differentiation of normal blood cells made it possible to study the controls that regulate growth (multiplication) and differentiation of these normal cells and the changes in these controls in leukemia. Experiments with normal blood cell precursors have shown that normal cells require different proteins to induce growth and differentiation. We have also shown that in normal myeloid precursors, growth-inducing protein induces both growth and production of differentiation-inducing protein so this ensures the coupling between growth and differentiation that occurs in normal development. The origin of malignancy involves uncoupling of growth and differentiation. This can be produced by changes from inducible to constitutive expression of specific genes that result in asynchrony to the coordination required for the normal developmental program. Normal myeloid precursors require an external source of growth-inducing protein for growth, and we have identified different types of leukemic cells. Some no longer require and other constitutively produce their own growth-inducing protein. But addition of the normal differentiation-inducing protein to these malignant cells still induces their normal differentiation, and the mature cells are then no longer malignant. Genetic changes that produce blocks in the ability to be induced to differentiate by the normal inducer occur in the evolution of leukemia. But even these cells can be induced to differentiate by other compounds, including low doses of compounds now being used in cancer therapy, that induce the differentiation program by other pathways. This differentiation of leukemic cells has been obtained in vitro and in vivo, and our in vivo results indicate that this may be a useful approach to therapy. In some tumours, such as sarcomas, reversion from a malignant to a non-malignant phenotype can be a result of chromosome changes that suppress malignancy. But in myeloid leukemia, the stopping of growth in mature cells by induction of differentiation bypasses the genetic changes that produce the malignant phenotype. These conclusions can also be applied to other types of normal and malignant cells.  相似文献

A cell line, ROSE 199, derived from rat ovarian surface epithelium (ROSE) formed papillary structures which resembled, histologically, serous papillary cystadenomas of borderline malignancy seen in the human ovary. Crowded cultures produced two layers of cells separated by a thick layer of collagen fibers. Such cultures shed viable cells into the growth medium, while no cells were shed by short-term ROSE cultures. The resemblance to ovarian tumors exhibited by ROSE 199 cells in culture, reinforces the hypothesis that the common epithelial tumors of the ovary are derived from the ovarian surface epithelium. ROSE 199 cells, while retaining their epithelial morphology and ultrastructural characteristics, express stromal activity such as abundant collagen production. Perhaps this ability to express epithelial and stromal behavior is a contributing factor to the ready neoplastic transformation of the ovarian surface epithelium.  相似文献

To characterise AQP subtype localisation and expression in epithelial ovarian tumours, immunohistochemistry was used to assess the localisation and expression of AQP1-9 in 30 benign tumour cases, 30 borderline tumour cases, 50 malignant tumour cases and 20 normal ovarian tissue cases. Multiple AQP subtypes were expressed in epithelial ovarian tumours, with each AQP subtype displaying a different pattern of localisation and expression. AQP1 was mainly expressed in the microvascular endothelium, and AQP 2-9 were mainly expressed in tumour cells. Most AQP subtypes co-localised in the basolateral membranes of the epithelia of benign tumours and plasma membranes of malignant tumour cells. The positive rates for AQP1, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 were over 50%, but those for AQP2, 3 and 4 were only 10-40%. The expression of AQP1, 5 and 9 in malignant and borderline tumours was significantly higher than that in benign tumours (P<0.05) and normal ovarian tissue (P<0.05). However, AQP6 expression in ovarian malignant and borderline tumours was significantly lower than that in benign tumours (P<0.01) or normal ovarian tissue (P<0.01). AQP1 expression was increased in cases with ascites volumes greater than 1000 mL (P<0.05), AQP5 expression was greater in cases with lymph node metastasis (P<0.05), and more AQP9 expression was observed in G3 cases versus G1 and G2 cases (P<0.01). These results suggest that changes in the distribution and expression of AQP subtypes may be involved in ovarian carcinogenesis. This study presents a novel avenue of research that could illuminate the mechanism of ovarian carcinogenesis and treatment.  相似文献

Summary Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynecological cancer mortality, and 85–90% of this malignancy originates from the ovarian surface epithelium (OSE). The etiology of ovarian epithelial cancer is unknown but a role for estrogens has been suspected. However, the effect of estrogens on OSE cell proliferation remains to be determined. Using the rabbit model, our studies have demonstrated that 17β-estradiol stimulates OSE cell proliferation and the formation of a papillary ovarian surface morphology similar to that seen in human ovarian serous neoplasms of low malignant potential. Immunohistochemical staining of ovarian tissue sections with an antibody to the estrogen receptor α demonstrates its expression in both OSE cells and stromal interstitial cells. In primary ovarian cell cultures, the proliferative response of the epithelial cells to 17β-estradiol depends on the expression of the estrogen receptor α in the epithelial cells. However, when the epithelial cells are grown together with ovarian stromal cells, their proliferative response to this hormone is greatly enhanced, suggesting the involvement of stromal-epithelial interactions. These studies suggest a role for estrogens and the estrogen receptor α in OSE growth.  相似文献

Peritoneal washings were performed on 48 patients with suspected or known ovarian carcinoma. The procedure was part of the initial surgical staging in 27 patients with presumed stage I and II ovarian cancer and was performed during second-look operations in 21 other cases with proven ovarian malignancy. This paper presents the microscopic features of the washings, with particular emphasis on the cytologic differentiation between benign and malignant findings outside of the ovary. Thirty-four cases showed benign or reactive mesothelial cells and no evidence of peritoneal disease. The washings of six patient showed malignant cells, which were confirmed histologically. Notable atypia that mimicked ovarian carcinoma was found in eight patients who had benign or borderline lesions. These findings included papillary and glandlike epithelial structures, with varying degrees of cellular atypia and psammoma bodies. The histologic counterparts of these atypicalities were Müllerian inclusions, mesothelial proliferations and borderline serous tumors. The differential diagnosis between these entities is essential because false-positive cytologic diagnoses may alter postoperative treatment in some patients.  相似文献
