Summary The insect order Phasmida comprises species with a broad spectrum of wing morphism and flight ability. By monitoring the electrical activity of several pterothoracic muscles the motor output during tethered flight was recorded for several Phasmida, ranging from excellent fliers to non-winged species. Both winged and non-winged species can generate a motor pattern as judged by criteria used to identify the locust flight pattern. However, in non-fliers the probability of expressing this pattern, its duration and precision are reduced. The antagonistic activity of the chosen muscle pairs is clearly different from the motor output during leg movements, which argues for specific motoneuronal coordination released for different behavioural performances. The demonstration of flight motor output in all tested Phasmida indicates that neural structures including their functional connectivity can be maintained independently of the appropriate peripheral structures. With respect to evolution this supports the idea that central neuronal interactions can be more conservative compared to changes in the periphery. Abbreviations of species names and indication of sexes are given in the first paragraph of Results  相似文献

Changes in flight direction in flying insects are largely due to roll, yaw and pitch rotations of their body. Head orientation is stabilized for most of the time by counter rotation. Here, we use high-speed video to analyse head- and body-movements of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris while approaching and departing from a food source located between three landmarks in an indoor flight-arena. The flight paths consist of almost straight flight segments that are interspersed with rapid turns. These short and fast yaw turns (“saccades”) are usually accompanied by even faster head yaw turns that change gaze direction. Since a large part of image rotation is thereby reduced to brief instants of time, this behavioural pattern facilitates depth perception from visual motion parallax during the intersaccadic intervals. The detailed analysis of the fine structure of the bees’ head turning movements shows that the time course of single head saccades is very stereotypical. We find a consistent relationship between the duration, peak velocity and amplitude of saccadic head movements, which in its main characteristics resembles the so-called "saccadic main sequence" in humans. The fact that bumblebee head saccades are highly stereotyped as in humans, may hint at a common principle, where fast and precise motor control is used to reliably reduce the time during which the retinal images moves.  相似文献

Fast moving animals depend on cues derived from the optic flow on their retina. Optic flow from translational locomotion includes information about the three-dimensional composition of the environment, while optic flow experienced during a rotational self motion does not. Thus, a saccadic gaze strategy that segregates rotations from translational movements during locomotion will facilitate extraction of spatial information from the visual input. We analysed whether birds use such a strategy by highspeed video recording zebra finches from two directions during an obstacle avoidance task. Each frame of the recording was examined to derive position and orientation of the beak in three-dimensional space. The data show that in all flights the head orientation was shifted in a saccadic fashion and was kept straight between saccades. Therefore, birds use a gaze strategy that actively stabilizes their gaze during translation to simplify optic flow based navigation. This is the first evidence of birds actively optimizing optic flow during flight.  相似文献

The success of the human species in interacting with the environment depends on the ability to maintain spatial stability despite the continuous changes in sensory and motor inputs owing to movements of eyes, head and body. In this paper, I will review recent advances in the understanding of how the brain deals with the dynamic flow of sensory and motor information in order to maintain spatial constancy of movement goals. The first part summarizes studies in the saccadic system, showing that spatial constancy is governed by a dynamic feed-forward process, by gaze-centred remapping of target representations in anticipation of and across eye movements. The subsequent sections relate to other oculomotor behaviour, such as eye-head gaze shifts, smooth pursuit and vergence eye movements, and their implications for feed-forward mechanisms for spatial constancy. Work that studied the geometric complexities in spatial constancy and saccadic guidance across head and body movements, distinguishing between self-generated and passively induced motion, indicates that both feed-forward and sensory feedback processing play a role in spatial updating of movement goals. The paper ends with a discussion of the behavioural mechanisms of spatial constancy for arm motor control and their physiological implications for the brain. Taken together, the emerging picture is that the brain computes an evolving representation of three-dimensional action space, whose internal metric is updated in a nonlinear way, by optimally integrating noisy and ambiguous afferent and efferent signals.  相似文献

The ability to monitor interactions between individuals over time can provide us with information on life histories, mating systems, behavioural interactions between individuals and ecological interactions with the environment. Tracking individuals over time has traditionally been a time‐ and often a cost‐intensive exercise, and certain types of animals are particularly hard to monitor. Here we use canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) to identify individual Mexican Ant‐thrushes using data extracted with a semi‐automated procedure from song recordings. We test the ability of CDA to identify individuals over time, using recordings obtained over a 4‐year period. CDA correctly identified songs of 12 individual birds 93.3% of the time from recordings in one year (2009), while including songs of 18 individuals as training data. Predicting singers in one year using recordings from other years indicated some instances of variation, with correct classification in the range of 67–88%; one individual was responsible for the great majority (66%) of classification errors. We produce temporal maps of the study plot showing that considerably more information was provided by identifying individuals from their songs than by ringing and re‐sighting colour‐ringed individuals. The spatial data show site fidelity in males, but medium‐term pair bonds and an apparently large number of female floaters. Recordings can be used to monitor intra‐ and intersexual interactions of animals, their movements over time, their interactions with the environment and their population dynamics.  相似文献

The halteres of flies are mechanosensory organs that provide information about body rotations during flight. We measured haltere movements in a range of fly taxa during free walking and tethered flight. We find a diversity of wing–haltere phase relationships in flight, with higher variability in more ancient families and less in more derived families. Diverse haltere movements were observed during free walking and were correlated with phylogeny. We predicted that haltere removal might decrease behavioural performance in those flies that move them during walking and provide evidence that this is the case. Our comparative approach reveals previously unknown diversity in haltere movements and opens the possibility of multiple functional roles for halteres in different fly behaviours.  相似文献

Activity of 50 dopamine and 67 non-dopamine neurons was studied during motivated behavioural actions in the cat brain black substance. 66% of former and 88% of latter neurons modified their activity before and during autoinitiated voluntary movements. The data obtained suggest that dopamine neurons are involved in organisation of movements in behavioural actions with cognitive components.  相似文献

This paper presents a model of saccadic eye movements. Eye movements are considered as being ballistic, since saccades (rapid concurrent movements of both eyes) occur several hundred thousand times per day; visual perception of the environment is interrupted by a saccade. The optimal control was constructed for the motion considered in three consecutively refined assumptions. The controls included in the time-optimal problem were the resultant moment of force exerted by the extraocular muscles, individual moments of force exerted by either muscle of the agonist–antagonist pair, and finally, the rate of change of these moments. This approach is consistent with the view that is currently upheld by physiologists, who believe that a saccade is programmed by the central nervous system before the beginning of an eye movement and is scarcely adjusted during the movement itself. The solution of the optimal control problem and the results obtained by subsequent numerical modeling of saccadic trajectories were compared with the published experimental data. The saccadic trajectories were compared based on the main sequence, the known consistent relationship between saccade amplitude and duration, which is the most widely applied and commonly accepted way of describing saccade data. The main sequence of saccades obtained from the solution of the optimal control problem formulated in the most complete form agreed well with published experimental results.  相似文献

The non-supervised construction of a mass spectral and retention time index data base (MS/RI library) from a set of plant metabolic profiles covering major organs of potato (Solanum tuberosum), tobacco (Nicotiana tabaccum), and Arabidopsis thaliana, was demonstrated. Typically 300-500 mass spectral components with a signal to noise ratio > or =75 were obtained from GC/EI-time-of-flight (TOF)-MS metabolite profiles of methoxyaminated and trimethylsilylated extracts. Profiles from non-sample controls contained approximately 100 mass spectral components. A MS/RI library of 6205 mass spectral components was accumulated and applied to automated identification of the model compounds galactonic acid, a primary metabolite, and 3-caffeoylquinic acid, a secondary metabolite. Neither MS nor RI alone were sufficient for unequivocal identification of unknown mass spectral components. However library searches with single bait mass spectra of the respective reference substance allowed clear identification by mass spectral match and RI window. Moreover, the hit lists of mass spectral searches were demonstrated to comprise candidate components of highly similar chemical nature. The search for the model compound galactonic acid allowed identification of gluconic and gulonic acid among the top scoring mass spectral components. Equally successful was the exemplary search for 3-caffeoylquinic acid, which led to the identification of quinic acid and of the positional isomers, 4-caffeoylquinic acid, 5-caffeoylquinic acid among other still non-identified conjugates of caffeic and quinic acid. All identifications were verified by co-analysis of reference substances. Finally we applied hierarchical clustering to a complete set of pair-wise mass spectral comparisons of unknown components and reference substances with known chemical structure. We demonstrated that the resulting clustering tree depicted the chemical nature of the reference substances and that most of the nearest neighbours represented either identical components, as judged by co-elution, or conformational isomers exhibiting differential retention behaviour. Unknown components could be classified automatically by grouping with the respective branches and sub-branches of the clustering tree.  相似文献

Biclustering is an important tool in microarray analysis when only a subset of genes co-regulates in a subset of conditions. Different from standard clustering analyses, biclustering performs simultaneous classification in both gene and condition directions in a microarray data matrix. However, the biclustering problem is inherently intractable and computationally complex. In this paper, we present a new biclustering algorithm based on the geometrical viewpoint of coherent gene expression profiles. In this method, we perform pattern identification based on the Hough transform in a column-pair space. The algorithm is especially suitable for the biclustering analysis of large-scale microarray data. Our studies show that the approach can discover significant biclusters with respect to the increased noise level and regulatory complexity. Furthermore, we also test the ability of our method to locate biologically verifiable biclusters within an annotated set of genes.  相似文献

During natural activities, two types of eye movements - saccades and vergence - are used in concert to point the fovea of each eye at features of interest. Some electrophysiological studies support the concept of independent neurobiological substrates for saccades and vergence, namely saccadic and vergence burst neurons. Discerning the interaction of these two components is complicated by the near-synchronous occurrence of saccadic and vergence components. However, by positioning the far target below the near target, it is possible to induce responses in which the peak velocity of the vertical saccadic component precedes the peak velocity of the horizontal vergence component by approximately 75 ms. When saccade-vergence responses are temporally dissociated in this way, the vergence velocity waveform changes, becoming less skewed. We excluded the possibility that such change in skewing was due to visual feedback by showing that similar behavior occurred in darkness. We then tested a saccade-related vergence burst neuron (SVBN) model proposed by Zee et al. in J Neurophysiol 68:1624-1641 (1992), in which omnipause neurons remove inhibition from both saccadic and vergence burst neurons. The technique of parameter estimation was used to calculate optimal values for responses from human subjects in which saccadic and convergence components of response were either nearly synchronized or temporally dissociated. Although the SVBN model could account for convergence waveforms when saccadic and vergence components were nearly synchronized, it could not when the components were temporally dissociated. We modified the model so that the saccadic pulse changed the parameter values of the convergence burst units if both components were synchronized. The modified model accounted for velocity waveforms of both synchronous and dissociated convergence movements. We conclude that both the saccadic pulse and omnipause neuron inhibition influence the generation of vergence movements when they are made synchronously with saccades.  相似文献

Despite evidence of the clustering of metabolic syndrome components, current approaches for identifying unifying genetic mechanisms typically evaluate clinical categories that do not provide adequate etiological information. Here, we used data from 19,486 European American and 6,287 African American Candidate Gene Association Resource Consortium participants to identify loci associated with the clustering of metabolic phenotypes. Six phenotype domains (atherogenic dyslipidemia, vascular dysfunction, vascular inflammation, pro-thrombotic state, central obesity, and elevated plasma glucose) encompassing 19 quantitative traits were examined. Principal components analysis was used to reduce the dimension of each domain such that >55% of the trait variance was represented within each domain. We then applied a statistically efficient and computational feasible multivariate approach that related eight principal components from the six domains to 250,000 imputed SNPs using an additive genetic model and including demographic covariates. In European Americans, we identified 606 genome-wide significant SNPs representing 19 loci. Many of these loci were associated with only one trait domain, were consistent with results in African Americans, and overlapped with published findings, for instance central obesity and FTO. However, our approach, which is applicable to any set of interval scale traits that is heritable and exhibits evidence of phenotypic clustering, identified three new loci in or near APOC1, BRAP, and PLCG1, which were associated with multiple phenotype domains. These pleiotropic loci may help characterize metabolic dysregulation and identify targets for intervention.  相似文献

There is an increasing interest in the quantitative proteomic measurement of the protein contents of substantially similar biological samples, e.g. for the analysis of cellular response to perturbations over time or for the discovery of protein biomarkers from clinical samples. Technical limitations of current proteomic platforms such as limited reproducibility and low throughput make this a challenging task. A new LC-MS-based platform is able to generate complex peptide patterns from the analysis of proteolyzed protein samples at high throughput and represents a promising approach for quantitative proteomics. A crucial component of the LC-MS approach is the accurate evaluation of the abundance of detected peptides over many samples and the identification of peptide features that can stratify samples with respect to their genetic, physiological, or environmental origins. We present here a new software suite, SpecArray, that generates a peptide versus sample array from a set of LC-MS data. A peptide array stores the relative abundance of thousands of peptide features in many samples and is in a format identical to that of a gene expression microarray. A peptide array can be subjected to an unsupervised clustering analysis to stratify samples or to a discriminant analysis to identify discriminatory peptide features. We applied the SpecArray to analyze two sets of LC-MS data: one was from four repeat LC-MS analyses of the same glycopeptide sample, and another was from LC-MS analysis of serum samples of five male and five female mice. We demonstrate through these two study cases that the SpecArray software suite can serve as an effective software platform in the LC-MS approach for quantitative proteomics.  相似文献

High-throughput molecular-profiling technologies provide rapid, efficient and systematic approaches to search for biomarkers. Supervised learning algorithms are naturally suited to analyse a large amount of data generated using these technologies in biomarker discovery efforts. The study demonstrates with two examples a data-driven analysis approach to analysis of large complicated datasets collected in high-throughput technologies in the context of biomarker discovery. The approach consists of two analytic steps: an initial unsupervised analysis to obtain accurate knowledge about sample clustering, followed by a second supervised analysis to identify a small set of putative biomarkers for further experimental characterization. By comparing the most widely applied clustering algorithms using a leukaemia DNA microarray dataset, it was established that principal component analysis-assisted projections of samples from a high-dimensional molecular feature space into a few low dimensional subspaces provides a more effective and accurate way to explore visually and identify data structures that confirm intended experimental effects based on expected group membership. A supervised analysis method, shrunken centroid algorithm, was chosen to take knowledge of sample clustering gained or confirmed by the first step of the analysis to identify a small set of molecules as candidate biomarkers for further experimentation. The approach was applied to two molecular-profiling studies. In the first study, PCA-assisted analysis of DNA microarray data revealed that discrete data structures exist in rat liver gene expression and correlated with blood clinical chemistry and liver pathological damage in response to a chemical toxicant diethylhexylphthalate, a peroxisome-proliferator-activator receptor agonist. Sixteen genes were then identified by shrunken centroid algorithm as the best candidate biomarkers for liver damage. Functional annotations of these genes revealed roles in acute phase response, lipid and fatty acid metabolism and they are functionally relevant to the observed toxicities. In the second study, 26 urine ions identified from a GC/MS spectrum, two of which were glucose fragment ions included as positive controls, showed robust changes with the development of diabetes in Zucker diabetic fatty rats. Further experiments are needed to define their chemical identities and establish functional relevancy to disease development.  相似文献

Estimating migration parameters of individuals and populations is vital for their conservation and management. Studies on animal movements and migration often depend upon location data from tracked animals and it is important that such data are appropriately analyzed for reliable estimates of migration and effective management of moving animals. The Net Squared Displacement (NSD) approach for modelling animal movement is being increasingly used as it can objectively quantify migration characteristics and separate different types of movements from migration. However, the ability of NSD to properly classify the movement patterns of individuals has been criticized and issues related to study design arise with respect to starting locations of the data/animals, data sampling regime and extent of movement of species. We address the issues raised over NSD using tracking data from 319 moose (Alces alces) in Sweden. Moose is an ideal species to test this approach, as it can be sedentary, nomadic, dispersing or migratory and individuals vary in their extent, timing and duration of migration. We propose a two-step process of using the NSD approach by first classifying movement modes using mean squared displacement (MSD) instead of NSD and then estimating the extent, duration and timing of migration using NSD. We show that the NSD approach is robust to the choice of starting dates except when the start date occurs during the migratory phase. We also show that the starting location of the animal has a marginal influence on the correct quantification of migration characteristics. The number of locations per day (1–48) did not significantly affect the performance of non-linear mixed effects models, which correctly distinguished migration from other movement types, however, high-resolution data had a significant negative influence on estimates for the timing of migrations. The extent of movement, however, had an effect on the classification of movements, and individuals undertaking short- distance migrations can be misclassified as other movements such as sedentary or nomadic. Our study raises important considerations for designing, analysing and interpreting movement ecology studies, and how these should be determined by the biology of the species and the ecological and conservation questions in focus.  相似文献

The question of whether animals possess ‘cultures’ or ‘traditions’ continues to generate widespread theoretical and empirical interest. Studies of wild chimpanzees have featured prominently in this discussion, as the dominant approach used to identify culture in wild animals was first applied to them. This procedure, the ‘method of exclusion,’ begins by documenting behavioural differences between groups and then infers the existence of culture by eliminating ecological explanations for their occurrence. The validity of this approach has been questioned because genetic differences between groups have not explicitly been ruled out as a factor contributing to between-group differences in behaviour. Here we investigate this issue directly by analysing genetic and behavioural data from nine groups of wild chimpanzees. We find that the overall levels of genetic and behavioural dissimilarity between groups are highly and statistically significantly correlated. Additional analyses show that only a very small number of behaviours vary between genetically similar groups, and that there is no obvious pattern as to which classes of behaviours (e.g. tool-use versus communicative) have a distribution that matches patterns of between-group genetic dissimilarity. These results indicate that genetic dissimilarity cannot be eliminated as playing a major role in generating group differences in chimpanzee behaviour.  相似文献
