Food habits of Melaniris sardina, Astyanax fasciatus and Dorosoma chavesi (n=562) were analyzed in Lake Xolotlán (Managua). Quality and quantity of ingested food were studied by dissecting the alimentary canal and observing its content. Cladocera were the main food for M. Sardina and A. fasciatus. Melaniris sardina could play an important role in maintaining low cladoceran population densities in the lake. Rotifers are the main food for D. chavesi. 相似文献

This work revises the rhinoceros remains from the well-known early Villafranchian locality of Étouaires (Auvergne, France), which have been collected on multiple occasions since the late 18th century. The species Stephanorhinus elatus and S. etruscus are present, both represented mainly by postcranial elements. To identify them, a detailed preliminary analysis of the morphological differences between the postcranial skeletons of the two species has been undertaken, using the material from Vialette (Haute-Loire, early Villafranchian) and Senèze (Haute-Loire, early late Villafranchian) as comparison for S. elatus and S. etruscus respectively, plus some specimens of S. etruscus from Upper Valdarno (Tuscany, middle Villafranchian). These localities have been chosen because they all yielded only one of the two species. The morphological distinction between the two species is not easy, since the interspecific variability often overlaps and includes polymorphic characters. However, a few diagnostic characters are described, and intra-specific variability has been investigated as much as possible with the fossil material under investigation. 相似文献

Cost–benefit considerations of wildlife monitoring are essential, particularly, in areas outside national park boundaries,
where resources for conducting wildlife censuses are scarce, but that, at the same time, are subject to high pressure for
wildlife utilization, such as hunting. Large mammal survey data from various sources were collated and analyzed to investigate
which methods are best suited for monitoring purposes at low cost in the Tarangire–Manyara ecosystem, northern Tanzania. Our
results indicate that primary data (from aerial and road transects counts) that involve direct species observations, although
sometimes very expensive, are required for establishing the status of the target species in terms of density or population
size. Concomitantly, secondary data from various sources, such as interviews, hunting quota, and damage reports, obtained
over wide areas and over longer periods of time, can provide important information on presence/absence and distribution of
species within an area. In addition, the study revealed that hunting quotas set did not correlate with species abundance/numbers
from the primary data surveys for most of the large mammals hunted within the ecosystem. For a better conservation and management
of wildlife, in particular with respect to the forthcoming formation of Wildlife Management Areas, we propose an integrated
approach to wildlife monitoring using primary and secondary data sources through the involvement of local people’s knowledge. 相似文献

New rodent and lagomorph fossils from the Hasnot–Tatrot area of northern Pakistan are presented here to complement knowledge of stratigraphic ranges and morphology of key late Neogene Siwalik taxa. Most of the material is from two sites near the village of Bhandar in strata of the late Miocene age Dhok Pathan Formation; one specimen comes from the Pliocene Tatrot beds. We apply previously established magnetostratigraphy to date the fossils, the Bhandar sites dating to 6.6–6.7 Ma. In describing the fossils, we emphasize new morphological information represented by the material. As surface finds, these fossils represent relatively large body size species: three bamboo rat relatives, a porcupine, and a rabbit. The bamboo rats (Rhizomyinae) are an endemic group, and both the porcupine ( Hystrix) and the rabbit ( Alilepus) represent late Miocene immigrants into the Indian subcontinent. 相似文献

The Tertiary floras play an integral role in understanding the biodiversity and interactions between climate and vegetation in Yunnan, China. The fossil spores, pollen grains, and leaves in this region have been investiaged intensively. In comparison, the woods have been studied relatively little. A large number of Pliocene wood specimens was collected from the opencast lignite coal mine of Hongxing situated in Changning County of Yunnan Province. Among the collection, Tsuga cf. dumosa (D. Don) Eichler and Pinus cf. armandii Franchet were identified based on wood structures. The subtle feature oftori extensions is reported in the wood of T. cf. dumosa. Considering the climatic requirements of modern T. dumosa and P.armandii, the two species of conifer described from Pliocene sediments probably grew in mountainous terrain at an elevation of approximately 2 300 m, in a cool and humid environment. 相似文献

A slightly crushed but otherwise nearly complete specimen of the recently described rhombiferan echinoderm genus Vizcainoia Zamora and Smith, 2012 is documented from the “Middle” Cambrian Jince Formation of the P?íbram–Jince Basin of the Czech Republic. Isolated thecal plates, earlier determined as calyx plates of the eocrinoid Acanthocystites briareus Barrande, 1887 and/or as eocrinoid sp., occurring in diverse levels of the Jince Formation are reassigned to Dibrachicystidae gen. et sp. indet. Similarly, isolated thecal plates collected from the Buchava Formation of the Skryje–Tý?ovice Basin could be classified as Dibrachicystidae gen. et sp. indet. Specimens from the Barrandian area are the first records of the family Dibrachicystidae outside of southwestern Europe, of the family otherwise known only from the Languedocian of Montagne Noire of France and from the Caesaraugustian and Languedocian of Iberian Chains of northern Spain. 相似文献

The “mid”-Cretaceous carbonate succession of the Apulia Carbonate Platform cropping out in northern Murge area (Apulia, southern Italy) is composed of shallow-water carbonate rocks and is over 400 m in thickness. This paper focuses on the lithofacies analysis of this carbonate succession, its paleoenvironmental interpretation, and its sequence-chronostratigraphic architecture. Lithofacies analysis permitted to identify deposits which can be grouped into the following three facies belts: (1) terrestrial facies belt formed by: intraclast-supported paleosoils; solution-collapse breccias; (2) restricted facies belt made up of lithofacies deposited in protected peritidal environments; (3) normal-marine facies belt made up of lithofacies formed in moderate- to high-energy subtidal environments. The detailed study both in outcrops and in thin-sections revealed that, at the bed scale, lithofacies are cyclically arranged and form shallowing-upward small-scale depositional sequences comparable to parasequences and/or simple sequences. The following three small-scale sequence types have been distinguished: (1) subtidal sequences mostly made up of lithofacies formed in the normal-marine open subtidal domain; (2) peritidal sequences made up of lithofacies formed in the restricted peritidal domain; (3) peritidal sequences showing a cap formed by paleosoils. Small-scale sequences are not randomly arranged in the compiled succession but form discrete packages, or sets, that alternate in the sedimentary record. The repetition of such small-scale sequence packages in the succession has been the key to recognize large-scale sequences comparable to third-order depositional sequences. Although sedimentological data are often fragmentary due to late dolomitization, four large-scale sequences have been distinguished. The data support a generalized landward-backstepping of facies belts during transgression, which implies a gradual gain of accommodation culminating with the deposition of a package of small-scale sequences formed by normal-marine subtidal deposits. These mark periods of maximum accommodation space and form the maximum-flooding zones of large-scale sequences. A gradual seaward progradation of facies belts is recorded during highstand conditions, which implies a gradual loss of accommodation culminating with the deposition of a package of peritidal small-scale sequences capped by paleosoils or by solution-collapse breccias. The occurrence of terrestrial deposits marks periods of minimum accommodation on the platform and determines the sequence boundary of large-scale sequences. The large-scale sequences identified in this study fit with the main transgressive/regressive cycles published in the sequence-chronostratigraphic chart of European basins. As a consequence, it is interpreted that changes of the sea level recorded at the scale of European basins played an important role in determining the sequence-stratigraphic architecture of the studied succession. In spite of this, the occurrence of solution-collapse breccias, which implies a significant gap in carbonate sedimentation in between Early and Middle Cenomanian times, may also have an alternative interpretation. In particular, this deposit may represent the local fingerprint of the well-known tectonic phase which, during Late Albian-Early/Middle Cenomanian times, determined the subaerial exposure of large parts of Periadriatic carbonate platforms producing a marked regional unconformity. 相似文献

The Lake Petén Itzá is located in the multiple use zone of the Maya Biosphere Reserve. It belongs to the subtropical moist forest (warm) life zone, and has very important flora and fauna diversities. Among the fish species, the white fish (Petenia splendida) is of high commercial value. The main goal of the present work was to clarify the taxonomic position of the two forms of the white fish in Petén (Guatemala), and to compare it with the Usumacinta (Mexico) form, based on the collected material from 1978 and 2006 (Usumacinta), and collections made during 2008 and 2009 in the Lake Petén Itzá. Samples were obtained from 10 different locations in the lake. From the total of 57 fish specimens collected, 50 fish were selected (25 yellow form and 25 silver form); besides, 21 specimens from 10 locations of the Usumacinta river in Mexico, from the Fish Collection, FCB, UANL. A total of 36 morphometric and 16 meristic characteristics, were analyzed, and also coloration, habitat and fishing method. This study reports the P. splendida of the Lake Petén Itzá with the following characteristics: the yellow form at a depth of 0.5-1.5m with dorsal fin XIV-(XV)-XVI/11-(12)-13, the silver form at a depth of 2-3m with dorsal fin XIV-(XV)-XVI/10-(12)-13, and the Usumacinta form with a dorsal fin XIV-(XV)-XV/12-(13)-13. The discrimination analysis demonstrates a differentiation among the three analyzed populations. Some of the characteristics are the ocular diameter, the anal source-pelvic source distance and the dorsal source-anal source distance. The geographic area studied has a high diversity of fish fauna along the watershed, and it is possible to observe the anthropogenic damage, due to the overexploitation based the unapplicability of the existent regulation and the urbanization. If this situation continues it could jeopardize the survival of this emblematic specie. 相似文献

The blood of 21 teleosts and 1 elasmobranch was analysed for antifreeze-protein activity by determining the thermal hysteresis. The fish were caught in the summertime at different locations in West Greenland (Disko Bay area). The difference between the melting and hysteresis freezing point (thermal hysteresis) is a numerical indication of the presence of antifreeze-protein activity. No thermal hysteresis was detected in the blood of the elasmobranch, Raja radiata (thorny skate) and, as expected, its blood was isosmotic to seawater. Of the 21 teleost species examined, 11 were found to have a thermal hysteresis greater than 0.1°C, an indication of the presence of substantial amounts of antifreeze. The remaining 10 species had a hysteresis less than 0.1°C, and thus their summertime possession of antifreeze protein was concluded to be very low or absent. No hysteresis was detected in Gadus morhua (Atlantic cod), but there was a slight faceting of the seed crystal, indicative of a low, possibly physiologically unimportant, level of antifreeze protein. This study is the first time antifreeze-protein activity has been detected in the species Stichaeus punctatus (Arctic shanny). 相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWR) were estimated for four fish species caught in the Tucuruí Lake Conservation Units Mosaic (03°48’15.7”S, 049°033’033,3”W; 04°13’18.2”S, 049°041’038.5”W and 04°17’57.1”S, 049°026’006.3”W). The samples were collected trimonthly between March 2013 and December 2014, using seven different gill nets (20 × 3.0 m; mesh size: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 mm between opposing knots) spending for twelve hours per day. 相似文献

A new non-marine ostracod fauna from the Paleogene “hamadian deposits” outcropping west of Bechar (southwestern Algeria) has been recovered from lacustrine to fluvial deposits of the Oued Méridja section and fluvial deposits on the southern edge of the Hamada de Méridja section. Recently, these sections have been dated as late Thanetian – early Ypresian (latest Paleocene to earliest Eocene) and Ypresian – earliest Lutetian (early to earliest middle Eocene), respectively, based on charophytes. The associated ostracod fauna recovered consists of relatively mostly moderately to badly preserved specimens and comprises 14 taxa, none of which could be identified to species level in view of its poor state of preservation; we have nevertheless been able to identify and describe the following taxa: Herpetocypris sp., Cyprinotus? sp., Heterocypris? sp. 1 and sp. 2, Cypris? sp., Ilyocypris sp., Cytheroidea indet. sp. 1 and sp. 2, Limnocytheridae indet. sp. 1, Cypridoidea indet. sp. 1, Cyprididae indet. sp. 1, and Ostracoda indet. sp. 1, 2 and 3. Only Heterocypris sp. 1 occurs in both sections. Although the fauna can as yet not be related to the few other contemporaneous faunas reported from the wider palaeogeographic area, it adds important new information to our poor knowledge on Eocene non-marine ostracods in North Africa and southern Europe. The Méridja sections and area are promising regarding the discovery of more, better preserved material and further studies, and one main limitation to the correlation of the fauna is the hitherto insufficient taxonomic knowledge on many faunal elements of Eocene non-marine ostracods to which our section contributes considerably. 相似文献

We studied feeding behavior and prey selection of topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva), big-scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) and pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) in Lake E?irdir, the second largest freshwater lake in Turkey. Fish specimens were collected between January and August in 2010 and 2011 using gill-nets and purse seines. A total of 941 specimens were analyzed for stomach contents analysis. We expressed the importance of the food items present in their guts with the relative importance index (IRI) and estimated their diet selectivity indices with Pearre’s index. Pseudorasbora parva had a diverse diet comprising mainly Nitokra hibernica (copepod), Chydorus sphaericus, and Bosmina longirostris (cladoceran) (each, at p?<?0.01), but Chironomus sp. (insect) was not a significant component of its diet (p?>?0.05). Big-scale sand smelt often preferred B. longirostris, N. hibernica, and Alona quadrangularis (each at p?<?0.01). Pike-perch positively, but not statistically significant, selected Atherina boyeri (p?>?0.05), Carassius gibelio was not preferred by pike-perch as food item (p?>?0.05). Our results indicate that invasive species altered the food chain in Lake E?irdir. Thus, because these fish species constitute a major threat for native fish species for food and breeding grounds, extensive care should be taken to prevent invasive fish species entering lakes in Turkey. 相似文献

The first fossil record of Vipera “Oriental vipers complex” (Serpentes: Viperidae) in the western Mediterranean islands is presented. Two large-sized vertebrae were found in an Early Pliocene karstic deposit located on the eastern coast of Mallorca, close to Caló den Rafelino (Manacor). The centrum length of the trunk vertebra (12.7 mm) represents the largest-sized known specimen of the European vipers belonging to the “Oriental vipers complex” and it suggests a body length close or greater than 200 cm. The arrival of this snake to Mallorca probably took place during the Messinian Salinity Crisis of the Mediterranean Sea (Late Miocene, 5.6-5.32 My ago) and it should be considered as one of the largest predators in Mallorca during the Early Pliocene. Although patterns of body size change in island snakes are unclear, some considerations about the large size of the Caló den Rafelino viper and co-evolution with endothermic preys are proposed. 相似文献

The Amazon region holds most of the biological richness of Brazil. Despite their ecological and biotechnological importance, studies related to microorganisms from this region are limited. Metagenomics leads to exciting discoveries, mainly regarding non-cultivable microorganisms. Herein, we report the discovery of a novel β-glucosidase (glycoside hydrolase family 1) gene from a metagenome from Lake Poraquê in the Amazon region. The gene encodes a protein of 52.9 kDa, named AmBgl-LP, which was recombinantly expressed in Escherichia coli and biochemically and structurally characterized. Although AmBgl-LP hydrolyzed the synthetic substrate p-nitrophenyl-β-d-glucopyranoside (pNPβG) and the natural substrate cellobiose, it showed higher specificity for pNPβG ( kcat/ Km = 6 s −1·mM −1) than cellobiose ( kcat/ Km = 0.6 s −1·mM −1). AmBgl-LP showed maximum activity at 40 °C and pH 6.0 when pNPβG was used as the substrate. Glucose is a competitive inhibitor of AmBgl-LP, presenting a Ki of 14 mM. X-ray crystallography and Small Angle X-ray Scattering were used to determine the AmBgl-LP three-dimensional structure and its oligomeric state. Interestingly, despite sharing similar active site architecture with other structurally characterized GH1 family members which are monomeric, AmBgl-LP forms stable dimers in solution. The identification of new GH1 members by metagenomics might extend our understanding of the molecular mechanisms and diversity of these enzymes, besides enabling us to survey their industrial applications. 相似文献

The present work is focused on the hipparionine remains from the late Miocene to early Pliocene deposits of the Haritalyangar areas, Himachal Pardesh, India. These remains are taxonomically ranked to five genera ( Plesiohipparion, Proboscidipparion, Cormohipparion, Sivalhippus, and Eurygnathohippus) and seven species. The described taxa are predominantly known from China, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Among these, Proboscidipparion is reported for the first time from the Siwaliks; the material assigned to Plesiohipparion sp. is a potential candidate for a new species. Hipparionines from this area have long been poorly known and are helpful to understand the palaeontological context of the Indian Siwalik mammalian fauna. The hipparionines suggest a wide variety of environmental conditions ranging from grasslands to forests. 相似文献

We describe a new genus and species of hadrosaurid dinosaur, Latirhinus uitstlani, from upper Campanian strata of the Cerro del Pueblo Formation in northern Mexico. The new taxon differs from other hadrosaurids, except Gryposaurus, in possessing a deep and arcuate dorsal process of the nasal; it differs from Gryposaurus, as well as from all other saurolophines, in having a broader narial foramen, and an anterodorsally curved deltoid crest of the scapula (convergent with Lambeosaurinae within the context of Hadrosauridae). L. uitstlani appears to be allied to ‘kritosaurs’, particularly to species of Gryposaurus, and it represents one of the southernmost saurolophines of North America. Likewise, L. uitstlani adds to the diversity of saurolophines in the southern Western Interior Basin and its occurrence in northern Mexico is consistent with the apparent predominance of ‘kritosaurs’ in southern Laramidia during late Campanian times. 相似文献

Biological characteristics of “Kunimasu” ( Oncorhynchus kawamurae), poorly known even before the species was prematurely believed extinct, have now become apparent following the examination of 59 specimens from Lake Saiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan and comparison with 58 examples of “Himemasu” (kokanee of Oncorhynchus nerka in Japan), also from Lake Saiko. Significant ( p < 0.01) differences between Kunimasu and Himemasu from Lake Saiko occurred in counts of anal-fin rays, pectoral-fin rays, gill rakers (no overlap found) and pyloric caeca. Secondary sexual characters related to maturity level were also found in Kunimasu, the body being more compressed in pre-spawning and spawning males and females than in immature and maturing individuals. Furthermore, maturing male Kunimasu and Himemasu also differed in body shape. Body coloration of Kunimasu also differed according to level of maturity, the nuptial coloration in both sexes being olive-green when alive and black when fresh. Dark dots, found in ca. 40 % of Kunimasu individuals examined, were less distinct than in Himemasu. The spawning season of Kunimasu extended through winter and early spring in Lake Saiko, with spawning males and females remaining near the bottom, compared with non-spawning individuals which occupied the upper and middle profundal zones in the daytime. 相似文献
