We studied DNA from the protogynous sex-changing fish Anthias squamipinnis to evaluate the recent observation that male-specific bands are identified after hybridization with Bkm, a probe originating in the W chromosome of the snake Bungarus fasciatus. Sex-specific hybridization would imply modification of DNA structure during the sex-changing process. No sex-specific Bkm fragments were identified in our study, after digestion of DNA from 15 males and 11 adult females, despite the use of 12 different restriction enzymes. However, hybridization with Bkm did produce a distinct fingerprint pattern, similar to the fingerprint patterns described for other species after hybridization with GATA (GACA) type probes. In other experiments, the pDP1007 probe, which identifies the ZFY gene in the male-determining region of the human Y chromosome, generated identical hybridization patterns in DNA from males and females of A. squamipinnis and estimation of DNA mass by flow cytometry revealed identical genome sizes.  相似文献

An analysis of fluctuating asymmetry was conducted on populations of the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis. The eight groups used in this study consisted of larvae and nymphs and males and females from the states of Minnesota, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina and Georgia and the F1 progenies of reciprocal crosses between ticks from Massachusetts and Georgia. Measurements included 16 larval, 19 nymphal, ten female and 12 male bilateral characters. Only five differences between the right and left bilateral characters had normal distributions with means of zero and differences in variances between the groups. These five characters included three setal lengths of the larvae, the spiracular plate length of females and the coxa I internal spur widths of males. Bivariate plots of character size ((R+L)/2) and asymmetry (R-L) showed no correlation. In the spiracular plate lengths of females and one of the setal lengths, ticks from Massachusetts had significantly less within-group variance than all the other groups. The only character in which fluctuating asymmetry was observed was the coxa I internal spur width of males, in which ticks from Minnesota, Missouri and North Carolina had significantly greater variance than the remaining groups; fluctuating asymmetry in this character may be explained by sexual selection. The cross progeny did not demonstrate any fluctuating asymmetry, as would be expected if the northern and southern forms of I. scapularis were true species. The virtual lack of fluctuating asymmetry in the characters used in this study further supports the conclusions of other studies which concluded that I. scapularis is a species with clinal variation and a broad geographic distribution.  相似文献

A cross between queen butterflies of the Palaeotropical species Danaus chrysippus and the Neotropical D. gilippus was achieved with difficulty in both directions. Only one progeny ( N  = 70) was reared comprising sterile males and inviable females in a precisely 1 : 1 ratio. Both prezygotic and postzygotic barriers to gene flow are strong. The result supports Haldane's Rule, to which we propose a minor amendment. The F1 hybrids were intermediate for background colour between the brown (genotype BB ) of gilippus and orange (genotype bb ) of chrysippus . Most F1 pattern characters were also intermediate. In polymorphic chrysippus populations, because Bb heterozygotes are brown, or nearly so, we suggest the B allele may have evolved towards dominance in sympatry. Hybrid males show positive heterosis for body size. The close similarity of male genitalia between the allopatric, genetically distant species chrysippus  and gilippus , compared to their divergence between gilippus and its largely sympatric sister species eresimus , suggest that reinforcement of sexual isolation or reproductive character displacement have evolved in sympatry.  © 2002 The Linnean Societyof London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 76 , 535–544.  相似文献

To study the reproductive biology of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) in Furnas Reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a total of 1307 specimens were captured in bimonthly sampling from August 1993 to July 1994. The sex ratio showed a predominance of females, representing 65.2% of the total sample. The stages of gonadal maturation and spawning type were determined through macro- and microscopic analysis of the gonads as well as by variation in the gonadosomatic indices. A . fasciatus showed fractionated spawning and reproduction throughout the year, with spawning peaks influenced by water temperature and rainfall. Males and females initiated gonadal maturation at a mean standard length of 6.4 and 6.5 cm, respectively. During gonadal maturation, females showed a reduction in hepatosomatic index (from 1.06 to 0.83), suggesting that hepatic substances are transferred from the liver to the ovaries. In the reproductive period, A. fasciatus had lower stomach repletion and coelomic fat indices, indicating that this species ate less and consumed more fat reserves when reproduction had the maximum GSI (11.3 for females and 2.7 for males). Weight of the ovaries had a positive influence on the condition factor (K1), as the lowest K2 value (weight without gonads) were obtained during maturation, confirming the influence of the ovaries upon the physiological condition of the females. In weight–length relationship, parameter b was 3.02 for females and 2.23 for males, and the correlation coefficient ( r 2) was 0.84 and 0.66, respectively.  相似文献

The pairings of Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) and Neoseiulus fallacis (Garman) from western North America were monitored for tending by adult males, males in the mating position and oviposition and the activity of female deutonymphs and adults. The N. fallacis × N. californicus (♂ × ♀) tests had fewer males tending the deutonymphs but more in the mating position with new females than the reciprocal test. Afterwards, most of the females appeared gravid and approximately 20% produced an egg. Some eggs did not hatch but others became adult males, which mated with their mothers, but no eggs were produced. F1 males tended and mated with new N. fallacis females which had normal offspring. When held with new N. californicus females, F1 males tended the deutonymphs but were not seen mating and no eggs were laid. The pairings of N. californicus× N. fallacis had more males tending, less in the mating position and the females appeared non-gravid and produced no eggs. When same-species males were added to females held with F1 males for 15–20 days, normal levels and sexes of the progeny were produced. The female and male adults of N. fallacis were more active (ambulatory) than those of N. californicus. In within-species tests, the males had a high activity except while tending and mating, the female deutonymphs were inactive and the just mated females were more active than the ovipositing females. The timing of the tending and mating differed in the cross-pairings. Overall, these and other life-history data show that these two mites are distinct species, but that their males are promiscuous in tending and mating. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the relationship between rearing temperatures, the presence or absence of Wolbachia endosymbionts, and non-reciprocal reproductive incompatibility in inbred lines of the parahaploid phytoseiid mite Metaseiulus occidentalis (Nesbitt) (Acari: Phytoseiidae).Heat-treated females crossed with infected males reared at room temperature produced few eggs and high proportions of shriveled eggs. No female progeny were produced. The reciprocal cross was normal. A second experiment showed that the incompatible cross from the first experiment could be made compatible if the infected line was heat-treated and those males crossed with the original heat-treated females. Furthermore, a new incompatibility was induced in a formerly compatible cross when the newly heat-treated females were crossed with males from their base colony. Heat-treatment was correlated with the loss of Wolbachia in both experiments. Wolbachia may thus affect non-reciprocal reproductive incompatibility in M. occidentalis, and may produce a unique incompatibility phenotype in this parahaploid species, including both reduced numbers of male progeny and a lack of female progeny.  相似文献

Mixed populations of the twospotted spider mite (TSM),Tetranychus urticae (Koch), and the Banks grass mite (BGM),Oligonychus pratensis (Banks), occur on corn and sorghum plants in late summer in the Great Plains. Interspecific matings between these arrhenotokous species occur readily in the laboratory but yield no female offspring. The effect of interspecific mating on female: male sex ratios was measured by examining the F1 progeny of females that mated with both heterospecific and conspecific males in no-choice situations. TSM females that mated first with BGM males and then with TSM males produced a smaller percentage of female offspring than TSM females that mated only with TSM males (43.1±5.8 and 78.9±2.8% females, respectively). Similarly, BGM females mated with heterospecific males and then with conspecific males produced fewer female offspring than females mated only with BGM males (55.7±5.2 and 77.5±2.5%, respectively). Lower female: male sex ratios were produced also by BGM females that mated with TSM males after first mating with conspecifics (62.4±3.4%). In mixed populations containing males of both species, females also produced lower female: male sex ratios, but these ratios were not as low as expected based on mating propensities and progeny sex ratios observed in no-choice tests. These data suggest that interspecific mating may substantially reduce female fitness in both mite species by reducing the output of female offspring, but in mixed populations this effect is mitigated by unidentified behavioral mechanisms.  相似文献

A progeny of the native Florida cycad Zamia integrifolia grown from seeds planted in 1986 was monitored until 1995 to record mortality and the nature and time of expression of primary and secondary sex characters. In addition to gender-specific cone morphologies, males and females differed in secondary sex characters such as age at first cone production, frequency of cone production, mean cone numbers in second and later coning episodes, and, in older plants, mean leaf and branch numbers. Gender differences expressed themselves at different stages in the life history: their nature and extent varied during the years following sexual maturation. By 1995, 46% of the plants in the progeny had died, most of them before producing cones. Prior to 1988 the mean leaf number of plants that died did not differ from that of survivors, but the mean leaf number of plants dying between 1988 and 1989 was 0.4 times that of the survivors during that period, suggesting reduced vigor prior to death. Mean age at first cone production was 5.8 yr for males and 6.6 yr for females. Mean dry masses of individual male cones increased between the first and second coning episodes, but not between the second and third coning episodes. Mean dry masses of the entire cone crop of individual males increased through the third coning episode due to an increase in mean cone number per episode, but mean cone number was unchanged between the third and fourth coning episodes. Mean dry mass of unpollinated female cones did not change between the first and second coning episodes; mean cone numbers did not change between the first and third coning episodes. After the first coning episode, males produced higher mean cone numbers than females. By 1995, the mean dry mass of an individual male's cone crop was greater than that of a female. Coning frequency of males was 1.7 times greater than that of unpollinated females, suggesting a gender difference in the genetic control of coning frequency. Coning frequency of females pollinated 1 or 2 yr previously was reduced compared with that of unpollinated females. Cone production did not affect subsequent leaf production by either gender. Mean leaf numbers increased in some years and not in others. Mean leaf numbers of males and females did not differ prior to cone production. After cone production mean leaf numbers of males were greater than of females. Mean age of males producing first branches was 6.3 yr, with a mean of 2.5 first branches per plant. Mean age of females producing first branches was 7.7 yr, with a mean of 2.5 first branches per plant. By 1995 the mean branch number of males was 5.7 per plant and of females was 2.7 per plant. Between 1993 and 1995 the mean branch number of males and females increased incrementally, but mean leaf numbers did not change. In early years of branching, leaf number increased with branch number; higher mean leaf numbers of males of an age class thus reflected their earlier branching. Males produced first cones earlier than females. Since branch production was associated with cone production, higher branch numbers of males in an age class reflected their earlier first cone production. In 1995 the sex ratio of known males and females in the progeny was 1:1, with a few individuals not having produced cones by that year.  相似文献

Glyptapanteles flavicoxis (Marsh) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a gregarious larval parasitoid of the Indian gypsy moth Lymantria obfuscata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), that is believed to have potential for inundative releases against gypsy moth populations, because it can be reared in large numbers with few hosts. Unfortunately, sex ratios in laboratory reared G. flavicoxis are usually male-biased, hindering efforts to mass release this species for biological control by making the production of females costly. Because parental age at time of mating is known to affect the sex ratio in some Braconidae, we crossed haploid males and virgin females at 0, 1, 4, 9, and 16 d old with at least 10 trials for each of the 25 combinations. Numbers and sex ratios of progeny produced by females each day were recorded. Both progeny and sex ratios (percentage of females) among progeny produced by ovipositing females of G. flavicoxis decreased markedly over time, so only the first days production need be used in mass rearing. The reduction in the proportion and numbers of females among progeny as females aged is consistent with sperm depletion. Approximately 30% of females in all age classes mated to newly emerged males (day 0) produced all male progeny, whereas only 10-15% of those mated to older males failed to produce any daughters. When crosses with only male progeny were excluded from the analysis, females mated to males 1 d old had higher sex ratios in progeny than those mated to males in other age classes. In addition, females mated the day that they emerged tended to have progeny with the highest sex ratios.  相似文献

The inheritance mode of Drosophila melanogaster female sexual maturation speed and hybridization with D. simulans males was measured in F1 females from crosses between isofemale lines of D. melanogaster chosen for their high or low hybridization and maturation speed values. The results suggest dominant inheritance for rapid female maturation and intermediate inheritance for hybridization. In Drosophila species of the obscura group, males exhibit sperm-heteromorphism, simultaneously producing both long sperm, capable of fertilization, and short sperm that are not. The production of multiple sperm types calls into question whether mating system correlates, such as sperm length and number trade-offs and female remating behavior, are the same as previously described in sperm-monomorphic systems. We examine three obscura group species, D. pseudoobscura, D. persimilis, and D. affinis that differ significantly in the lengths of their long fertilizing sperm, to test predictions about the relationship between sperm length and four mating system characters: male age at sexual maturity; sperm number; female remating; and male reproductive output. In D. affinis, where males produce the longest fertilizing sperm, their sexual maturity is delayed and they produce fewer long sperm compared to the other two species, as predicted if long sperm are costly to produce. Female D. affinis, although they receive fewer sperm than females of the other two species, do not remate more frequently or produce fewer progeny from a single mating. Different responses between sperm-heteromorphic and sperm-monomorphic systems underscore the complex nature of the coevolution between male and female mating system characters.  相似文献

Most theoretical models on evolution of male secondary sexual characters and female preferences for these characters suggest that the male characters evolve in response to female preferences that may themselves evolve in response to direct or indirect benefits of choice. In Drosophila montana (a species of the D. virilis group), females use male song in their mate choice, preferring males that produce songs with short sound pulses and a high carrier frequency. We demonstrate here that the females get indirect benefits from their choice: in our data the frequency of the male song correlated with the survival rate of the male''s progeny from egg to adulthood (indirect benefit for the female), but not with the fecundity of his mating partner (no direct benefit for the female). Male wing centroid asymmetry did not correlate with male wing song characters, nor with female egg production nor the fitness of her progeny, suggesting that fluctuating asymmetry in male wings does not play a major role in sexual signalling. The fact that the male song gives the female information on the male''s condition/genetic quality in D. montana suggests that in this species the evolution of female preferences for male song characters could have evolved through condition-dependent viability selection presented in some ''good genes'' models.  相似文献

Ethological isolation was found among North American members of the fasciatus species group of Eumeces. Ethological isolation was investigated by staging a series of interspecific and intraspecific heterosexual encounters. No male E. laticeps or E. fasciatus courted heterospecific females. In both species, males courted and copulated with conspecific females in a significantly higher frequency of trials than with heterospecific females. However, male E. inexpectatus courted females of all three species, courting conspecific females and female E. laticeps at similar frequencies, but female E. fasciatus at a significantly lower frequency. No females of any of the three species were sexually receptive to heterospecific males, but forced copulation occurred in two of nine courtships of female E. fasciatus by male E. inexpectatus. Thus, ethological isolation in the fasciatus group appears to be complete with the possible exception of occasional forced copulation between male E. inexpectatus and female E. fasciatus. Preliminary evidence on the role of chemical stimuli in maintaining ethological isolation was obtained from experiments involving interspecific transfers of female odors. Male E. inexpectatus courted female E. fasciatus labelled with the odor of female E. inexpectatus in a significantly greater proportion of trials than they courted such females lacking the conspecific female odor. In a similar experiment, male E. fasciatus did not court female E. inexpectatus even if the females bore odors of female fasciatus.  相似文献

Blue mussels of the genus Mytilus form extensive hybrid zones in the North Atlantic and elsewhere where the distributions of different species overlap. Mytilus species transmit both maternal and paternal mtDNA through egg and sperm, respectively, a process known as doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI), and some females produce offspring with extremely biased sex ratios. These two traits have been shown to be linked and maternally controlled, with sex determination involving nuclear–cytoplasmic interactions. Hybridization has been shown to disrupt DUI mitochondrial inheritance and sex ratio bias; however, the effect of hybridization on reproductive fitness has not previously been examined. We investigated this effect in M. edulis × M. trossulus crosses through histological examination of mature F1 progeny, and spawning of F1 hybrids to monitor survival of their progeny through to the D stage of larval development. For progeny produced from mothers with a strong bias toward female offspring (often 100%) in pure-bred crosses, there was a clear breakdown in female dominance of progeny and significantly more hermaphrodites in the hybrid crosses produced from sperm with the M-tr1 mitotype. We also found significant sex-specific differences among hybrid progeny, with females producing normal eggs while males and hermaphrodites evidenced impaired gonadal development with significantly greater numbers of Sertoli cells, phagocytic hemocytes, and degenerating germ cells, all associated with gonad resorption. Males from crosses where DUI was disrupted and where male progeny were homoplasmic for the female mtDNA were the most severely compromised. Allelic incongruity between maternal and paternal mitotypes in hybrid crosses was associated with significant disruption of male gonadal development.  相似文献

Developmental success on 47 species of plant and reproductive compatibility were studied for four strains of the European red mite,Panonychus ulmi (Koch), collected from dwarf bamboo, elm and apple trees. The host range was variable in those strains and there was no plant species on which all four strains were able to reach maturity.Intra-populational crosses in the dwarf-bamboo strain and the two apple strains of mites, as well as crosses between the two apple strains, gave both female and male progeny. Inter-populational crosses between the dwarf-bamboo and apple strains produced only male progeny, as in the case where females of each strain were kept virgin, indicating that these two were reproductively incompatible and had an arrhenotokous reproductive system. When females of the elm strain were crossed with males of the elm, dwarf-bamboo or apple strain, no males were produced, as in the case for virgin females of the elm strain which had a thelytokous reproductive system. It is thus concluded that the strains derived from different host species were reproductively incompatible with one another.  相似文献

Studies on intraguild interactions between phytoseiid species have shown that intraguild predation occurs and is most commonly manifested as adult females of one species feeding on juveniles of another. Whether such intraguild interactions can also occur between adult females of one species and adult males of another, is not known. Herein, we report on intraguild interactions between adults of the two sexes in cross-pairing experiments involving three related phytoseiid species (Neoseiulus paspalivorus, N. baraki and N. neobaraki) that are potential candidates for controlling the coconut mite Aceria guerreronis, a serious pest of coconut palms in tropical countries. For comparative reasons, the experiments were repeated with larvae instead of males, and with only males or only females of two different species together. In the presence of an ample supply of prey, females of N. neobaraki never fed on individuals of their own species, yet appeared to be very aggressive against males, as well as larvae of the other two phytoseiid species. They also fed on females of N. paspalivorus, but rarely on females of N. baraki. Males of N. neobaraki did not suffer mortality when together with females of either of the two other phytoseiid species. Males of N. baraki did not suffer predation from females of N. paspalivorus, but males of N. paspalivorus suffered some mortality (15 %) from N. baraki females. Larvae of each of the three species were vulnerable to intraguild predation by heterospecific adult females, except for N. neobaraki larvae when together with N. baraki females. The absence or presence of intraguild predation is largely explained by the size ratios of the individuals that were put together: large individuals feed on smaller ones, but never the reverse. For each sex, size declines in the following order: N. neobaraki > N. baraki > N. paspalivorus. Moreover, for each species, females are larger than males and males are larger than larvae. Strikingly, however, females did not kill males and larvae of their own species. We propose that niche competition between related phytoseiid species is not only determined by intraguild predation on heterospecific larvae, but also by imposing great mortality on males from the intraguild prey because phytoseiid females being pseudo-arrhenotokous require insemination to produce offspring of both sexes.  相似文献

Correct species identification and delineation are crucial for effective conservation and management. However, species delineation can be problematic in the presence of morphological ambiguities due to phenotypic plasticity, convergence, and/or interspecific hybridization. Here, we investigated the degree of hybridization between two closely related freshwater mussel species [Bivalvia: Unionidae; Lampsilis siliquoidea (Barnes) and L. radiata (Gmelin)] that present intermediate forms in areas of sympatry. Unionids have a distinct form of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) inheritance, termed doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) where female mtDNA (F-type) is transmitted to all progeny but male mtDNA (M-type) is mostly inherited by the males resulting in mostly homoplasmic females and heteroplasmic males. An individual was identified as hybrid when F-type and M-type mtDNA of the two different species were found in the same individual. Twelve out of 116 sequenced males were identified as hybrids indicating that these species hybridize where their geographic range overlaps in the lower Great Lakes and St. Lawrence basins. Microsatellite analyses further support the occurrence of hybridization but at a larger spatial scale than indicated by the mitochondrial analyses. We also found that strong within-species population genetic structure affects the detection of purebred individuals overestimating the number of hybrids. Given the large geographic scale and proportion of hybrids found in this study, natural hybridization and introgression need to be considered when implementing local biodiversity inventories, identifying waterbodies as source of organisms for relocation and restoration projects and when setting appropriate conservation policies.Subject terms: Evolutionary genetics, Genetic hybridization  相似文献

In the Australian red-claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens) (Decapoda, Parastacidae), a gonochoristic species, seven different combinations of intersex individuals (with both male and female genital openings) have been described. However, to date, the genetic basis for this phenomenon has not been investigated. This study was designed to test a simple chromosome-based sex-determination model for C. quadricarinatus that assumes the male to be the homogametic (ZZ) sex. According to our model, intersex individuals that are functionally males are genetically females (WZ). Individual crosses were performed between intersex and female crayfish, with control crosses being performed between normal males and females. The control crosses yielded, in most cases, the expected 1:1 sex ratio in the F1 progeny. Crosses between intersex individuals and females yielded a 1:3 (male:female) sex ratio in most crosses. According to our hypothesis, one-third of the females produced in a cross of a female with an intersex animal should be WW females. The hypothesis was tested by crossing normal males with F1 females, which were progeny of intersex fathers. These crosses yielded almost 100% females, a finding that conforms to the above-suggested sex determination model for C. quadricarinatus and the female WZ genotype of intersex individuals.  相似文献

Summary A new method is suggested for controlling species of insect pests in which the female is heterogametic. This method, involving the use of balanced lethals on the Z chromosome, causes the death of females in the embryonic stage. The method has already been tested in practical sericulture for the production of entirely male progeny of the silkworm. The method requires the construction of two strains of the pest, one carrying two balanced nonallelic but closely located lethals on the Z chromosome, and another with two other pairs of lethals of the same type. In the hybrid progeny from the crosses between the two strains, 100% of the female embryos would die, thus making it possible to release only males without any laborious procedure for sex discrimination. In the progeny from the crosses between the released males and females from the natural population, again 100% of females would die, but the males would survive and when they mated — 62.5% of the female progeny would die. This rate would decline to 34.4 and 16.6% in the sons and grandsons respectively. The repeated release of hybrid males would lead to a progressive increase, with each successive generation, in the percentage of female mortality in the natural population until its total extinction.  相似文献

Most studies on size–fitness relationships focus on females and neglect males. Here, we investigated how body size of both sexes of an aphid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi Haliday, affected the reproductive fitness. Reproductive fitness was generally positively correlated with body size for both sexes in this species. Large individuals of both sexes had greater longevity, large males fathered more progeny, and large females had higher fecundity, parasitism, and greater ability in host searching and handling. We demonstrated in this study that size effects of males and females were asymmetric on different reproductive fitness parameters. With increasing body size females gained more than males in longevity and fecundity while males gained more than females in the number of female progeny. Regardless of female size, large males sustained a female-biased population longer than small males. These results suggest that male body size should also be considered in the quality control of mass-rearing programs and the evaluation of parasitoid population growth.  相似文献
