Weight gain of adult femalesPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot was determined after they were fed eggs or adult females ofTetranychus urticae Koch reared on either Lima bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) or nightshade (Solanum douglasii Dunal). No significant difference was found when the predator was fed eggs ofT. urticae reared on either host. Predators were heavier when fed adult femaleT. urticae reared on bean. Apparently, a factor determining the prey's suitability is incorporated into its hemolymph or tissues and
is not restricted to its gut content.

The management of Tetranychus urticae, a key pest of clementine trees, is mainly based on the use of acaricides. However, more environmentally safe measures, such
as biological control, are being encouraged. Life-history traits of the three most abundant phytoseiid mites associated with
T. urticae on this crop (Euseius stipulatus, Phytoseiulus persimilis and Neoseiulus californicus) were studied. The experiments were performed under laboratory conditions (25°C, 80 ± 5% RH and 16:8 h (L:D)) on clementine
leaves and T. urticae as prey. Euseius stipulatus could not complete its life cycle, whereas P. persimilis and N. californicus completed it satisfactorily. The estimated intrinsic rate of increase (r
m) was significantly higher for P. persimilis (0.344 day−1) than for N. californicus (0.244 day−1) and both were higher than the r
m value of T. urticae on clementine leaves. Implications of these results for the biological control of T. urticae in this crop are discussed. 相似文献

The present study reports life-table parameters and compares the longevity, fecundity, egg-to-adult development times and the length of the reproductive periods for five phytoseiid species (Typhlodromus annectens, Amblyseius californicus, A. idaeus, Euseius concordis, andPhytoseiulus macropilis) when reared onMononychellus progresivus orTetranychus urticae. Recommendations regarding the use of these species for classical biological control ofM. tanajoa in Africa are made. 相似文献

Summary Two chitin synthesising systems in Tetranychus urticae are described: one chitosomal system located in the oocytes where spatial and temporal distances are large, and one membrane bound system located in the hypodermis. Similarity of mechanisms of chitin synthesis in animals and plants is suggested. 相似文献

Survey of natural enemies of spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) in citrus orchards in eastern Spain
Abad-Moyano R Pina T Dembilio O Ferragut F Urbaneja A 《Experimental & applied acarology》2009,47(1):49-61
Field surveys were conducted from 2004 to 2007 to determine the species composition and relative abundance of natural enemies
associated with colonies of either the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri, or the two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in Valencian citrus orchards (eastern Spain). Fourteen species were recorded, six phytoseiid mites and eight insect predators.
Two of them are reported for the first time on citrus in Spain and two more are first reports as predators associated with
T. urticae. The community of predators associated with T. urticae and P. citri was almost identical, and the Morisita–Horn index of similarity between both natural enemy complexes was close to one, suggesting
that predators forage on both pest species. Quantifying the presence of many known spider mites predators in Valencian citrus
orchards is an important first step towards spider mite control. A challenge for future studies will be to establish conservation
and/or augmentation management strategies for these predators, especially to improve T. urticae biological control. 相似文献

Summary The prosomal glands of Tetranychus urticae (Acari, Tetranychidae) were examined light and electron microscopically. Five paired and one unpaired gland are found both in females and males. The silk spinning apparatus consists of paired silk glands which extend laterally on both sides of the esophagus into the pedipalps. There, they enter the terminal silk gland bag which opens into a silk bristle at the apex of the pedipalps. The salivary secretions are formed in three paired glands which have an interconnecting duct, the podocephalic canal. The dorsal podocephalic glands may produce a serous secretion, the anterior podocephalic glands a mucous secretion, and the coxal organ may add a liquid, ion-rich secretion. These secretions pass the podocephalic canal and reach the mouth at the apex of the gnathosome. The function of the paired tracheal organs and the unpaired tracheal gland is still unclear. The tracheal gland may produce a secretion which facilitates the movement of the fused chelicerae and the stylets. This study was financed by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG Se 162/12) 相似文献

Effects of chlorpyrifos and sulfur on spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) and their natural enemies 总被引:7,自引:2,他引:5

In many agricultural systems spider mites are believed to be induced pests, only reaching damaging densities after pesticides decimate predator populations. Wine grapes typically receive two types of pesticides, insecticides and fungicides. Chemicals in either class could impact spider mite densities both directly through spider mite mortality, and indirectly by negatively affecting natural enemies. The impact of a broad-spectrum insecticide (chlorpyrifos) and an inorganic fungicide (sulfur) on mites and their natural enemies was monitored in replicate open-field experiments conducted in an abandoned vineyard in Washington State. In both experiments, chemicals were applied within a 2 × 2 factorial design, allowing assessment of both main and interactive effects of the two chemicals. Following typical management practices on wine grapes in Washington State, we made a single insecticide application early in the season, but repeatedly applied sulfur throughout the season. In the absence of sulfur, chlorpyrifos application led to higher spider mite densities. The main effect of chlorpyrifos appeared to be indirect, perhaps mediated through mortality of generalist phytoseiid mites; generalists appeared to be unable to recover following even a single insecticide application, while there was no evidence for harmful effects of chlorpyrifos on specialist phytoseiid mites. Sulfur had direct suppressive effects on both pest and predatory mites, although in the second experiment the suppressive effect of sulfur on spider mites was weaker when chlorpyrifos was also applied. These field experiments suggest that a complex mix of direct and indirect effects of the two chemicals impacted spider mite population dynamics in our system. 相似文献

We determined the effect of ground cover on phytoseiid predatory mite populations and the potential biological control of Panonychus citri (McGregor). Results showed that citrus trees with ground cover contained higher population densities of predatory mites and provided better regulation of P. citri than trees in bare soil. The ground cover Ageratum conyzoides L. performed better than Palspalum notatum Flugge in sheltering phytoseiid mites. 相似文献

The predator efficacy ofPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot andAmblyseius californicus (McGregor) (Acarina: Phytoseiidae) when feeding on the Banks grass mite (BGM),Oligonychus pratensis (Banks) (Tetranychidae), was compared under controlled laboratory conditions. Predation byP. persimilis andA. californicus reduced the BGM densities by 60% and 28%, respectively. In general, phytoseiids preferentially fed upon the more abundant
instars. Ovipositional rates forP. persimilis while feeding on BGM approximated rates when feeding onTetranychus spp.

Predator–predator, predator–prey, and prey–prey associations among nine species of mites were studied in a plot of 100 Red Delicious apple (Malus pumila Miller) trees from 1990 to 1997. In 1990, seven-year-old trees were inoculated with Panonychus ulmi (Koch), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) or both, and sprayed with azinphosmethyl (alone or plus endosulfan), or nothing. The species Zetzellia mali (Ewing) (Acari: Stigmaeidae), Amblyseius andersoni Chant (Acari: Phytoseiidae), Eotetranychus sp., Bryobia rubrioculus (Scheuten) (Acari: Tetranychidae), and Aculus schlechtendali Nalepa (Acari: Eriophyidae) were already present or immigrated into plots, and Galendromus occidentalis (Nesbitt) and Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were introduced. Yule's V association index was used to measure positive, neutral, or negative interspecific associations for each species pair, because of its robustness with spatially autocorrelated data. We found that pesticide and release treatments did not greatly affect the association results, but there were strong seasonal differences. Predator–predator associations were the strongest and most consistent, showing negative associations in the early and mid seasons, and neutral ones in late season. Negative associations of T. pyri with other predators were the strongest, which is consistent with evidence that this mite can detect other predators on a leaf. Predator–prey seasonal associations were mixed, with some positive and others negative, with most significant associations occurring in the mid season. One prey–prey interaction was positive, again in mid season, most likely because of similar habitat preferences. 相似文献

The predacious miteTyphlodromus pelargonicus El-Badry preyed on the different developmental stages of the two spotted spider miteTetranychus urticae Koch. The development was quickest and the number of prey consumed was highest when individuals were maintained on eggs compared
with nymphs or adult female stages. The predator was able to develop and reproduce on the eriophyid miteEriophyes dioscoridis. Soliman & Abou-Awad, nymphs of the tobacco whiteflyBemisia tabaci (Genn.) and pollen grains ofPhoenix dactylifera andRicinus communis. The average number of eggs/♀/day was 1.4, 0.7, 1.2 and 0.9 on eriophyid, whitefly,Ph. dactylifera andR. communis respectively.

The commercially available strains of Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, the biological control agent of Tetranychus urticae Koch, perform poorly in the Western Mediterranean, probably because they are not well adapted to local climatic conditions. For that reason, efforts are being focused on the development of a biological control programme using native phytoseiid mites. Four species of red spider mites can be found in vegetable crops in eastern Spain: T. urticae, Tetranychus turkestani Ugarov and Nikolski, Tetranychus ludeni Zacher and the recently introduced Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard. To evaluate their potential role as biological control agents, the present study evaluates the life-history of local populations of Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) and P. persimilis when fed on T. urticae, T. turkestani, T. evansi, and T. ludeni in the laboratory. Results indicate that N. californicus and P. persimilis are able to feed and complete their development on the four tested red spider mite species. The predators may exhibit a particularly high capacity for population increase when fed on T. urticae, T. turkestani, and T. ludeni, thus may be able to provide effective control of these species in the field. When fed T. evansi, however, predator performance was poor; significant increase in development and preoviposition times, and a reduction in oviposition period and fecundity were recorded. The resultant low capacity for population growth suggests poor ability of the two tested predators to suppress T. evansi populations on commercial crops. It is unlikely therefore that P. persimilis and N. californicus, now being widely used to control T. urticae in greenhouse crops in Central Europe, will be able to halt any spread of T. evansi to greenhouse crops in temperate areas. 相似文献

The effect of residues of esfenvalerate on oviposition of the resistant strain of the predatory mite Typhlodromus pyri and its main prey, European red mite Panonychus ulmi and two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae, were investigated. T. pyri showed a significant linear reduction in oviposition after 24h in the presence of increasing levels of esfenvalerate residue applied at the field rate. Furthermore, when given a choice, T. pyri preferred to lay eggs on residue-free surfaces. Of the two prey species, only P. ulmi showed significant avoidance of increasing levels of residues of the field rate concentration of esfenvalerate, as measured by runoff mortality, however both P. ulmi and T. urticae, when given a choice, showed a preference for esfenvalerate-free surfaces. As with the predatory mite T. pyri, both prey species showed a significant linear reduction of oviposition with increasing esfenvalerate residues and a preference to lay eggs on esfenvalerate-free surfaces. Esfenvalerate residues as high as 15X field rate were not repellent to pyrethroid-resistant T. pyri. The possible effects of these sublethal effects on predator-prey dynamics and implications for integrated mite control programmes in apple orchards are discussed. 相似文献

The shape and dimensions of the spermathecae are taxonomically important characteristics in phytoseiid mites. In experiments with Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) and Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten, the shape of the cervix of the spermatheca changed considerably and its diameter was increased by 42–49% when mites were flattened, compared to being mounted with 140m spacers underneath the coverslips. Dimensions of the dorsal shield were also affected by flattening, increasing by 3–5%. 相似文献

Typhlodromalus manihoti and Typhlodromalus aripo are exotic predators of the cassava green mite Mononychellus tanajoa in Africa. In an earlier paper, we showed that the two predators were attracted to odors from M. tanajoa-infested cassava leaves. In addition to the key prey species, M. tanajoa, two alternative prey mite species, Oligonychus ossypii and Tetranychus urticae also occur in the cassava agroecosystem. Here, we used a Y-tube olfactometer to determine the attraction of the predators
to odors from O. gossypii- or T. urticae-infested cassava leaves and their prey-related odor preference. T. aripo but not T. manihoti was slightly attracted to odors from O. gossypii-infested leaves. Both predator species showed a stronger response to odors from cassava leaves infested by M. tanajoa over odors from cassava leaves infested by O. gossypii. Neither predator species was attracted to odors from T. urticae-infested leaves and the predators preferred the odors from M. tanajoa-infested leaves over those from T. urticae-infested leaves. When O. gossypii was present together with M. tanajoa on the same leaves or on different sets of leaves offered together as an odor source the two predators were attracted. In
contrast, after mixing non-attractive odors from T. urticae-infested leaves with attractive odors from M. tanajoa-infested leaves, neither T. aripo nor T. manihoti was attracted. Ecological advantages and disadvantages of the predators’ behavior and possible implications for biological
control of M. tanajoa are discussed.

Bifenazate is a novel carbazate acaricide discovered by Uniroyal Chemical (now Chemtura Corporation) for the control of phytophagous mites infesting agricultural and ornamental crops. Its acaricidal activity and that of its principal active metabolite, diazene, were characterized. Bifenazate and diazene had high toxicity and specificity both orally and topically to all life stages of Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus citri. Acute poisoning was observed with no temperature dependency. No cross-resistance was found to mites resistant to several other classes of acaricides, such as tebufenpyrad, etoxazole, fenbutatin oxide and dicofol. Bifenazate remained effective for a long time with only about a 10% loss of efficacy on T. urticae after 1 month of application in the field. All stages of development of the predatory mites, Phytoseiulus persimilis and Neoseiulus californicus, survived treatment by both bifenazate and diazene. When adult females of the two predatory mite species were treated with either bifenazate or diazene, they showed a normal level of fecundity and predatory activity in the laboratory, effectively suppressing spider mite population growth. Even when the predators were fed spider mite eggs that had been treated previously with bifenazate, they survived. These findings indicate that bifenazate is a very useful acaricide giving high efficacy, long-lasting activity and excellent selectivity for spider mites. It is, therefore, concluded that bifenazate is an ideal compound for controlling these pest mites. 相似文献

A photographic sampling method for mites on plants was evaluated using Tetranychus urticae and Phytoseiulus persimilis on pepper plants. It was found to be 92% accurate for T. urticae eggs and 98% accurate for P. persimilis eggs at densities up to 45 eggs per cm2 for T. urticae, and up to 3 eggs per cm2 for P. persimilis. The motiles of the two species were not confused, nor were they confused with exuviae or other matter. 相似文献

AbstractStudies on the life history and life table parameters of Neoseiulus cucumeris Oudemans (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were carried out under laboratory conditions of 25?±?1?°C and 65?±?5% RH; 30?±?1?°C and 60?±?5% RH; 35?±?1?°C and 55?±?5% RH. As prey, immature stages of tetranychid spider mite T. urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) and the moving stages of the Tomato Russet Mite A. lycopersici (Massee) (Acari: Eriophyideae) were selected. The predatory phytoseiid mite, Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) was able to develop successfully from egg to adult stage through the entire life history on both preys. The higher of different temperatures and relative humidities shortened the development and increased reproduction and prey consumption and vice versa. The maximum reproduction (3.91, and 3.09 eggs/♀/day) was recorded at 35?°C and 65% RH, while the minimum (2.12, and 1.90 eggs/♀/day) was at 25?±?1?°C and 55?±?5% RH. when N. cucumeris fed on A. lycopersici and T. urticae, respectively. The reproductive rate on eriophyid was significantly higher than previously recorded on tetranychid. Life table parameters indicated that feeding of phytoseiid mite N. cucumeris on tomato russet mite A. lycopersici led to the highest reproduction rate (rm?=?0.268, 0.232 and 0.211 females/female/day), while feeding on T.urticae gave the lowest reproduction rate (rm?=?0.159, 0.143 and 0.131) at 35?°C and 55% RH, 30?°C and 60% RH and 25?°C and 65% RH, respectively. The population of N. cucumeris multiplied (36.81, 28.71 and 20.47) and (24.60, 19.58 and 14.62 times) in a generation time of (20.10, 23.20 and 25.14) and (22.35, 25.36 and 27.79 days) when a predator fed on A. lycopersici and T. urticae at the same temperature above mentioned, respectively. These results suggest that the two mites, particularly A. lycopersici, proved to be suitable prey for N.cucumeris, as a facultative predator. 相似文献

ITS2 sequences as barcodes for identifying and analyzing spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The use of DNA barcodes, short DNA sequences from a standardized region of the genome, has recently been proposed as a tool
to facilitate species identification and discovery. Here we show that second internal transcribed spacer of nuclear ribosomal
DNA (rDNA-ITS2) barcodes effectively discriminate among 16 species of spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) from Israel. The
barcode sequences of each species were unambiguously distinguishable from all other species and formed distinct, nonoverlapping
monophyletic groups in the maximum-parsimony tree. Sequence divergences were generally much greater between species than within
them. Using a 0.02 (2%) threshold for species diagnosis in our data set, 14 out of 16 species recognized by morphological
criteria would be accurately identified. The only exceptions involved the low divergence, 0.011–0.015 (1.1–1.5%), between
Tetranychus urticae and Tetranychus turkestani, where speciation may have occurred only recently. Still, these species had fixed alternative rDNA-ITS2 variants, with five
diagnostic nucleotide substitutions. As a result, we tentatively conclude that rDNA-ITS2 sequence barcodes may serve as an
effective tool for the identification of spider mite species and can be applicable as a diagnostic tool for quarantine and
other pest management activities and decision-making. We predict that our work, together with similar efforts, will provide
in the future the platform for a uniform, accurate, practical and easy-to-use method of spider mite species identification. 相似文献
