The embryology ofStegnosperma halimifolium andS. watsonii has been studied in detail. The tapetum is of the secretory type and its cells become multinucleate. Simultaneous cytokinesis in the pollen mother cells follows meiosis. The ripe pollen grains are 3-celled. The ovule is crassinucellate, bitegmic and amphitropous, with the micropyle formed by the inner integument alone. The female archesporium is one celled, and the parietal tissue 3–5 layered. The embryo sac development conforms to thePolygonum type. A central strand, 6 or 7 cells thick, differentiates inside the nucellus and extends from the base of the embryo sac to the chalazal region. The endosperm is nuclear. The embryogeny conforms to the Caryophyllad type. The seed coat is formed by the outer epidermis of the outer integument and the inner epidermis of the inner integument. Based on this evidence and other data, the status of the genus as an independent family,Stegnospermataceae (Stegnospermaceae) is confirmed. Apparently, it forms a connecting link betweenPhytolaccaceae andCaryophyllaceae.  相似文献

The embryology ofLagascea mollis, Zinnia angustifolia andGalinsoga parviflora has been studied. The anther archesporium is hypodermal and consists of a single row of 6–8 cells, there are two layers below the epidermis of the anther and a periplasmodial tapetum. Ripe pollen grains are tricolpate and 3-celled. The ovary contains a single ovule, but in a few cases ofGalinsoga parviflora two ovules have been found. The female archesporium is unicellular, but sometimes more than one archesporial cell occurs inLagascea mollis andZinnia angustifolia. The embryo sac development is of the Polygonum type, the synergids are hooked, antipodal cells show great variation. The endosperm development is cellular inGalinsoga parviflora and peripheral layer persists in the mature seed. The embryo development conforms to the Senecio variation of the Asterad type. Aspects of the life history ofKyllinga monocephala are described. Anther wall development corresponds to the Monocot type. The endothecium shows spiral thickenings. The tapetum is glandular and has uninucleate cells. Ubisch granules are present. Mature pollen grains (pseudomonads) are 3-celled at maturity. Ovules are bitegmic, crassinucellate and develop a funicular obturator. The embryo development conforms to theJuncus-variation of the Onagrad type. Summary Data on structural and functional aspects of mitotic diplospory and later stages of apomictic seed formation are reported forPoa palustris andP. nemoralis. In this study, the plant material of two Russian populations ofP. nemoralis andP. palustris were used for transmission electron microscope observations. Seed formation was investigated by phase contrast microscopy in two populations ofP. nemoralis collected in The Netherlands. The processes of transformation of the megasporocytes to the megaspore mother cells of diplosporous embryo sacs, and thereafter to one- and two-nucleate diplosporous embryo sacs (Antennaria type) were characterized by an increase of cell size, structural and functional reorganization of the nucleus, nucleolus, and cytoplasm, and cell isolation as a result of thickening of the cell wall. These were accompanied by an increase in the cell metabolic activity inferred from visual evidence of the activation of nucleus, nucleolus, endoplasmic reticulum, dictyosomes, mitochondria, and from the appearance of a dense population of ribosomes and polysomes. The diplosporous embryo sac of the Antennaria type was characteristic for bothP. nemoralis andP. palustris. No signs of the presence of synaptonemal complexes were observed during the process of diplosporous-embryo-sac megaspore mother cell differentiation and division. About 90–95% of the diploid egg cells of diplosporous embryo sacs were able to produce apomictic embryos. These embryos developed before anthesis. However, many of them degenerated at the globular stage because of lack of endosperm. Until now seeds ofAnnonaceae were characterized as mesotestal only. The seed ofArtabotrys hexapetalus, however, is meso- and endotestal. An outer mechanical layer which surrounds the seed as a lignified fibrous tissue is derived from the mesotesta. A complex inner mechanical layer develops from a partially multi-layered endotesta built up by crystal-containing stone cells. The multi-layered endotesta forms a prominent seed plug in the micropylar region which is prolonged along both sides of the perichalaza as inner walls. The endotesta is one-layered on the sides of the seed and participates in rumination. In addition the endotesta may serve for deposition of end-products of metabolism. The complex growing process of the perichalaza and its surrounding tissues is described in detail. The perichalazal pad of tanniferous cells forms an U-shaped septum, in conjunction with the endotesta, dividing the seed into two chambers. During seed development it functions as transmitter of nutrients from the outer chamber filled with starch grains to the nucellus, endosperm and embryo contained in the inner one. During germination this pad probably serves for the uptake of water. — At the initial phases of germination the seed dehisces into two valves along the raphal and antiraphal side. Later on an additional parenchymatous operculum covering the seed apex disintegrates and the endotestal plug fixed by its two prolongations splits along a preformed fracture line into two parts to release the seedling. Rudiments of an aril are recognizable in young seeds only. — The data obtained fromArtabotrys hexapetalus are discussed and compared with published information on seeds in other annonaceous taxa. For systematic considerations the necessity to define the origin of the annonaceous seed plug from one or the other integument is emphasized as it may prove to be an important differential character withinAnnonaceae.  相似文献

Norway spruce bore an abundance of cones in Finland in 2000, but these cones were often fungal-infected. The seeds had structural injuries that were revealed when seed samples were examined using light (LM) and a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Two main types of spores were found either in the tissues inside the seed coat or on the sarcotesta, the outermost layer of seed coat. The spores of Chrysomyxa pirolata appeared particularly in the nucellar tissue, where the cell walls were disintegrated at the middle lamellae and cytoplasm was disrupted. Degenerated remnants of fungal structures resembling aecial peridium were found close to aeciospores. The tissue of the megagametophyte differed also from that of a normal mature seed. Conidia of Thysanophora penicillioides were often encountered on the sarcotesta where the ordinary wax cover was missing. Fungal injury occurred in the nucellar layers that shelter the embryo and megagametophyte from desiccation and oxidation. Destruction of these structures together with rapid opening of the seed coat advance deterioration of seeds during storage and may cause unexpected economic losses in forest plant production.  相似文献

The integrity of ribosomal RNA (the percentage of complete, un-nicked molecules) in seeds was studied by electrophoresis under denaturing conditions. Two batches of carrot seed, harvested at different stages of maturity, and four batches ofNicotiana seed stored for various times were used. Within each species, there was a correlation between the integrity of the rRNA of the dry seed and the rate of germination of that seed. In carrot seed, there was extensive degradation of existing rRNA in both the embryo and endosperm during the first two days of imbibition.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy demonstrate that the mature thread cells in Eptatretus deani and Myxine glutinosa consist of a single, coiled thread up to 10 cm long. Mature thread cells apparently loose the cell membrane within the slime gland before expulsion. Thus the old idea that rupture of the cell membrane causes the uncoiling in sea water is no longer tenable. If the thread cells are transferred without additional fluid to a microscope slide, no uncoiling occurs until sea water or distilled water is added when the process occurs rapidly; however, in double strength sea water uncoiling is slowed down. In tetrahydrofuran or glycerin there is no uncoiling in 100 % or 50 % solutions; however in 5 % solutions uncoiling occurs slowly. Thus the availability of adequate amounts of water seems to be necessary for uncoiling. Presumably, water acts directly on the thread, causing the organelle to straighten and thus uncoil. The defensive value of the slime production is discussed.  相似文献

The nature of the protocorm of theOrchidaceae has fascinated morphologists for more than a century. In the present study, the development of the protocorm was followed using in vitro germination of seeds on a culture medium containing sugar, but without a symbiont. Inside the seed, the embryo consists of about a hundred cells. In the embryo, cells are arranged along a longitudinal axis according to size; these cells contain protein and lipid reserve material. In the first stages of seedling development, the embryo is transformed into a protocorm and meristematic tissue becomes organized into a meristematic dome (promeristem) at the anterior pole. This meristematic dome will give rise to a scale and the apex of the seedling. At first, the apex and the scale leaf develop synchronously. The development of the root always follows that of the apex. The study of the development of the seed ofCypripedium acaule showed that the protocorm is a distinct morphological system with respect to the rest of the cormus. The protocorm may be interpreted as an extension of the proembryonic stage.  相似文献

Previously reported electrophoretic seed albumin data have shown an unexpected association ofVicia faba withV. kalakhensis. In the present work, seed albumins ofV. faba (subsp.paucijuga and subsp.faba) were compared with those ofV. kalakhensis using ionexchange (IE) and reversed-phase (RP) high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Two subspecies ofV. faba displayed similar seed albumin profiles. On the other hand, seed albumin profiles ofV. faba andV. kalakhensis showed no major protein peak in common either in IE-HPLC or RP-HPLC chromatograms. The reported differences in seed albumin composition ofV. faba andV. kalakhensis are consistent with other taxonomical data showingV. faba to be genetically distant from the wild relatives.  相似文献

The embryology ofCrocus thomasii is described. Male meiosis is of simultaneous type, and gives rise to starchy microspores which develop into lipoid pollen grains; these are two-celled and show a spinulate acolpate, abaculate exine lacking apertures. The tapetum is glandular and its cells become bi- or sometimes multinucleate. The ovule is anatropous and bitegmic; the inner integument forms the micropyle. Megasporogenesis is heteropolar with starch accumulation in the functional chalazal megaspore. Embryo sac development conforms to thePolygonum type. The endosperm development is nuclear. The embryo develops according to the Caryophyllad type. In the ripe seed it is differentiated and enveloped by a starchy cellular endosperm. The seed set and breeding system in a naturalized population ofEuonymus europaeus is described. The average seed set is lower (5.7%) and more variable in male than in female plants (9.3%). Some male plants set little or no seed. The role of maternally derived abscisic acid (ABA) during seed development has been studied using ABA-deficient mutants of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia Viviani. ABA deficiency induced seed abortion, resulting in reduced seed yield, and delayed growth of the remaining embryos. Mutant grafting onto wild-type stocks and reciprocal crosses indicated that maternal ABA, synthesized in maternal vegetative tissues and translocated to the seed, promoted early seed development and growth. Moreover ABA deficiency delayed both seed coat pigmentation and capsule dehiscence. Mutant grafting did not restore these phenotypes, indicating that ABA synthesized in the seed coat and capsule envelope may have a positive effect on capsule and testa maturation. The embryo position in a seed is stable in most plant species, indicating the existence of a strict regulatory mechanism that specifies the embryo position in the seed. To elucidate this mechanism, we analyzed the gypsy embryo (gym) mutant of rice, in which the position of the mature embryo in the seed is altered at a low frequency. Analyses of early embryogenesis and ovule development showed that the ectopic embryo was derived from an ill-positioned egg cell, which resulted from the incomplete curvature of the ovule. Although the development of both the inner and outer integuments was impaired, the ovule curvature was associated closely with the extent of inner integument growth. Therefore, inner integument development controls ovule curvature in rice. The expression patterns of OSH1 and OsMADS13 indicated that, in gym, a small number of indeterminate cells are maintained on the style side of the ovule and then in the integument primordium at a low frequency. The prolonged survival of these indeterminate cells disturbs normal integument development. The gym fon2 double mutant suggests that GYM and FON2 are involved redundantly in floral meristem determinacy. Possible functions of the GYM gene and the ovule developmental mechanism are discussed.  相似文献

The mature seeds ofHampea nutricia are glabrous, ovoid, arillate and dark tan in colour. Longitudinal streaks on the seed surface correspond to the underlying integumentary vascular strands. Testa and tegmen are derived from the outer and inner integuments, respectively. The outer epidermis of the tegmen forms a palisade-like macrosclereid layer, the inner epidermis a fringe layer. The endosperm is single-layered and also fills the space between the two cotyledons. The embryo is nearly straight, gland-dotted; it has asymmetrical and folded cotyledons, and gossypol ducts. The ovule ofGnetum gnemon has three envelopes around the nucellus. The outer one forms two clear swellings at the lateral sides during the early developmental stages. The middle envelope also shows two swellings in many cases arranged decussately with respect to those of the outer one. All these swellings become obscure or disappear later. The inner envelope arises as an annular primordium and forms several manifest lobes at the stage of pollination. it develops two proliferating structures from its middle portion, viz., a flange and a micropyle-closing tissue. The three envelopes differentiatiate into the fleshy outer, sclerenchymatic middle and compressed inner layers of the seed coat, respectively. The inner one, however, remains restricted to the apical part of the seed owing to endochalazal growth. The outer envelope is derived from both dermal and subdermal cells of the ovule primordium and, therefore, is of dual origin. The middle and inner envelopes are subdermal in origin. The present study has cleared up some conflicting reports in the previous publications.  相似文献

Summary The development ofGasteria verrucosa ovules and seeds seems to follow a pattern of growth in which the majority of carbohydrates is first used in the sporophytic tissue (nucellus, integuments, and arillus) around the gametophyte-derived cells. After fertilization the carbohydrates are used for further development of the arillus and seed coat. During the next stage carbohydrates are directed to develop the endosperm, followed by carbohydrate investment in the developing embryo and in storage products. This utilization pattern is deducted from a localization study on sucrose synthase and invertase. These two enzymes break down imported sucrose and are in that perspective used as markers for carbohydrate transport since diffusion is expected to be induced towards cells and tissues with high sucrose-hydrolyzing activities.  相似文献

林下植被是生态系统的重要组分。通过对比分析红壤侵蚀区植被恢复过程中,林下有无芒萁覆盖地的土壤可溶性有机碳(DOC,Dissolved Organic Carbon)含量及其与地下根系生物量、地上植被淋溶液DOC含量的关系。结果表明:林下植被芒萁覆盖增加了地上叶片和地下根系生物量,土壤DOC含量及储量也显著增加(P0.05),芒萁覆盖对表层土壤(0—20cm)DOC的影响大于深层土壤(20—100cm)(P0.05);相关分析结果表明,林下芒萁覆盖地土壤DOC储量与细根生物量的垂直变化呈显著的正相关关系(P0.05),且随植被恢复年限的增加相关性显著增加,地下根系的垂直分布直接影响各土层DOC储量。不同植被恢复时期,林下芒萁覆盖地土壤DOC与鲜叶(马尾松+芒萁)和枯落物(马尾松+芒萁)淋溶液DOC均呈显著的正相关关系(P0.01),而林下裸露地土壤DOC仅与鲜叶(马尾松)淋溶液DOC呈显著的相关性(P0.01),林下芒萁覆盖地相对于裸露地枯落物淋溶液对土壤DOC储量的影响大于鲜叶。植被恢复过程中芒萁覆盖地土壤微生物生物量碳和微生物熵显著高于林下裸露地。因此,在植被恢复进程中,芒萁能够提供更多底物参与土壤物质与养分循环,对土壤DOC的贡献较大,为侵蚀区马尾松林恢复提供了重要的养分再吸收来源;同时芒萁覆盖增加了微生物活性,促进了微生物对土壤DOC的同化作用,提高了微生物碳源的利用率,对土壤有机碳的积累起着重要的作用。  相似文献

The dormancy status ofFraxinus excelsior embryos at different developmental stages under environmental conditions was examined over a period of 2 years. For each sampling date the length of the fruit, of the seed, and of the embryo were measured, and the embryological stage determined. The depth of dormancy was assayed by the germination behaviour of isolated embryos under aseptic conditions on an agar medium without nutrients. As an approach towards a quantitative estimate of the dormancy status, the degree of inhibiton of germinative growth in the embryonic organs was evaluated on the basis of four categories from none to full germinative growth. From these ratings a dormancy index was calculated, expressing the mean dormancy status of the embryos at a given date. Embryo dormancy already became apparent during embryogenesis and reached its highest level during the later phase of reserve deposition in the seed. A marked loss of embryo dormancy occurred during the phase of maturation drying in autumn, followed by a moderate increase in winter. In hydrated seeds in spring the embryo was gradually released from dormancy and enlarged further. In maintaining the embryo ofF. excelsior in a developmental but not germinative mode, dormancy mechanisms within the embryo and the endosperm, combined with environmental factors, may be involved.  相似文献

Algal extracts provide a safe regime for enhancing crop productivity under stressful conditions. The present study evaluated the efficiency of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the brown alga Dictyota dichotoma in alleviation of salt stress on germination of rice seeds. Firstly, seeds were germinated using the aqueous extract of D. dichotoma at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 20, and 50 g L−1, prepared either at room temperature (RTE) or by boiling (BLE). The % germination of rice increased from 84% in non-treated seeds to 100% when treated with 20 g L−1 BLE, although this treatment caused reduced uniformity of germination. Embryo growth was maximum at 20 g L−1 of both extracts with superiority of BLE over RTE. In the second experiment, the effect of 20 g L−1 aqueous and ethanolic extracts relative to a balanced nutrient supply on germination of seeds treated with 0, 40, 90, and 170 mM NaCl was investigated. Salinity reduced % germination with delayed onset but high uniformity of germination, whereas algal amendments counterbalanced the effect of salinity to a greater extent relative to the nutrient supply. Upon withdrawal of salt stress, seeds promptly recovered, with more efficient recovery of seeds exposed to 170 mM than from 90 mM NaCl. The lower recovery of salt-treated seeds compared with the control seed germination suggests that rice suffered from the toxic ion effect of salinity on embryo rather than from the osmotic effect. Extracts of D. dichotoma can enhance and also alleviate salinity stress on rice seed germination.
