Two analogues of insect juvenile hormones (JH) have been shown to interfere with the development of Elminius modestus Darwin larvae when dispersed as acetone solutions in sea water. Stage VI nauplii metamorphosed to morphologically abnormal larvae which were intermediate in size between the nauplius and cypris stages; although these larvae were cypris-like they apparently retained some nauplius characteristics. Cyprids either metamorphosed to non-attached adults or formed larvae which were larger or morphologically abnormal. There was evidence that the effects may be related to the physiological development of the larvae at time of exposure. These observations appear to be the first report of the induction of size and morphological abnormalities in a crustacean species by analogues of insect JH and resemble those arising from the hormonal imbalance which such compounds induce during the development of holometabolous insects.  相似文献

Examination of the coenenchyme tissues of Renilla reniformis revealed two regions of crystal formation: the endoderm containing small oval deposits of unknown composition and the mesoglea containing larger elongated spicules composed of calcite. Spicule formation takes place intracellularly in scleroblasts and may be explained by the following sequential processes: an organic matrix consisting of a homogeneous ground substance and fibers is formed in a large vacuole. Calcite needles 0.4 μ in diameter develop in close association with matrix fibers and vesicles, and grow to form the central core of the spicule. Large electron dense bodies dominate the scleroblast cytoplasm during these early stages of growth. In a later stage, smaller needles 0.2 μ in diameter develop surrounding the core to form the distal lobes of the spicule. ‘Lollipop’-shaped vesicles containing fibers appear in the scleroblast cytoplasm at the onset of this stage. This material is released at the calcification front and presumably is incorporated into the spicule as an organic matrix of crystals in the distal lobes.  相似文献

The modian dorsal longitudinal indirect flight muscles from the mesothorax and metathorax of Homorocoryphus nitidulus vicinus have been studied to determine whether structural differences might offer an explanation for reports that the mesothoracic musculature effects a wing-beat rate of 140 beats/sec during stridulation, whereas during flight, it, like that of the metathorax, effects wing-beat frequencies of 14 to 20 beats/sec. No differences were observed and it is concluded that the high wing-beat rate, reported during stridulation, is not reflected in any specific modification of mesothoracic muscle fine structure.  相似文献

The cells of the mantle edge of Cerastoderma edule are described after light and electron microscopical observations. Histochemical tests for calcium in the mantle edge and digestive gland (Dahl, 1952; McGee-Russell, 1958) and analytical electron microscopy of the mantle edge of C. edule both failed to show calcium. Similar results were obtained for Mytilus edulis and Chlamys opercularis. However, calcium was detected in the digestive gland of the terrestrial gastropod Helix aspersa. The outer secretory fold of the mantle edge is composed of tall columnar cells. These cells have highly convoluted lateral cell membranes with which many mitochondria are closely associated. These features are indicative of an ion pump which could move calcium from the mantle space to the extrapallial cavity (compare with Bubel's findings, 1973b). There are many features of the cells lining the periostracal groove of C. edule that have not been reported previously (e.g. Bubel, 1973b) and which are now discussed. The periostracal sheet arises within a line of basal cells in the fundus of the periostracal groove. Within these cells the periostracum in section has a spiral form. It is suggested that the newly formed periostracum adheres to the microvillous border through secretions produced from the middle fold cells lining the groove. During its passage along the groove the periostracum is gradually thickened by secretions from the outer fold cells.  相似文献

Nauplii batch cultures of Balanus amphitrite were reared with four different diatoms (Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Chaetoceros gracilis, silicate-limited C. gracilis) at three different cells concentrations: 1×105, 5×105, and 1×106 cells ml−1. The cyprid energy reserves were quantified as the ratio of triacylglycerols (TAG) to DNA. Energy reserves of larvae fed on different diatoms at a concentration of 1×106 cells ml−1 were ranked in the order: silicate-limited C. gracilis>C. gracilis>T. pseudonana>S. costatum. There was a significant linear relationship between the TAG content of the diet and cyprid energy reserves. The effect of cyprid energy reserves on metamorphosis to polystyrene surface in the presence and the absence of conspecific settlement factor (SF) was studied after 12, 24, and 48 h of incubation. A strong positive correlation between energy reserves and percent metamorphosis was observed in the absence of SF (r12 h=0.88, r24 h=0.82, r48 h=0.68, P<0.05). A weak positive correlation was observed in the presence of SF (r12 h=0.43, r24 h=0.48, r48 h=0.50, P<0.05). In both treatments, more than 80% of the cyprids with high energy reserves metamorphosed within 24 h. In contrast, a high proportion of cyprids with low energy reserves metamorphosed in response to SF in 24 h. Our results indicate that discriminatory metamorphic behavior of cyprids is closely linked to their TAG/DNA ratio, a proxy for energy reserve.  相似文献

In Mytilus californianus, root lamellae of the byssus stem are formed by two morphologically distinct exocrine cell types. Type 1 cells contain large ellipsoid granules which are ultrastructurally identical to those of the collagen gland associated with byssus thread formation: these granules are secreted only at the base of the stem generator. Type 2 cells contain small cylindroid granules which are secreted only from the lateral surfaces of generator septa. The resultant matrix is biphasic because the two secretions are incompletely mixed. Lamellar sheets of matrix are propelled outward by the action of cilia and are molded into a cylinder at the neck region of the stem. However, the stem retains a lamellar pattern. Byssus threads are attached to the stem by flattened rings formed from thread material which is secreted into the cervical crevice surrounding the neck. The microanatomy of the stem forming region is described and a new term, “stem generator,” is proposed for this organ.  相似文献

Adult barnacles, Chathamalus fragilis, were removed carefully from the leaves and stems of marsh grass and floated base-up in algae-supplemented sea water. During the next 24-72 h, the animals secreted onto their exposed bases, a fluid, the cement precursor secretion (CPS), aliquots of which were collected in glass micropipets and pooled. The concentration of protein in pooled samples of CPS averaged 1.5 g +/- 0.42 protein/l of secretion. Protease activity was expressed as A(492) units/h/g of CPS protein. Aliquots of 5-45 l of pooled CPS samples, incubated in the presence of FTC-casein at 37 degrees C for 24 h, exhibited 8.31 x 10(-5) +/- 1.55 x 10(-5) DeltaA(492) units/hr/g of protein on average. Protease activity was optimized by the addition of 10 mM Ca(++) ions. Activity was detectable over a broad pH range, but was optimal around pH 8. Protease activity was inhibited up to 40% in the presence of 2.7 mM ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and up to 97% in the presence of 2.5 mM 1,10-phenanthroline (OP) in the presence of 10 mM Ca(++) ions. Although low concentrations of Zn(++) ions (10 M) had little effect on protease activity, higher concentrations of Zn(++) ions (50 M to 15 mM Zn(++)) inhibited CPS protease activity. Protease activity was not inhibited by 1 mM phenylmethylsulfonylfluoride (PMSF), nor by 28 M E64, nor by 20 M leupeptin. At the present time, the protease activity in the barnacle CPS may best be characterized as a Ca-stimulated Zn-metalloprotease.  相似文献

We isolated aerobic and anaerobic facultative bacteria inhabiting the crop of adult Dusky-billed Parrotlets (Forpus modestus). We looked for bacteria capable of hydrolyzing starch, the most abundant polysaccharide in seeds. We compared our results with bacteria isolated from the crop of three species of doves with granivorous–frugivorous diet and three carnivore birds. Forpus modestus has 107–108 of colony formation units (CFU); these values were higher by one to three orders of magnitude compared with those observed in the other species studied. Bacillus pumilus, one of the most abundant bacteria isolated in F. modestus (6.03 × 106 CFU), was capable of hydrolyzing starch. We found higher diversity and abundance of bacteria in granivorous than in carnivorous birds or birds without a developed crop. Additionally, we found yeasts in the three species of doves. These findings suggest microbial activity in the crop, although its importance in food digestion needs to be determined.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of an intertidal population of the barnacleBalanus amphitrite was studied close to a sewage outfall nearQuequén, Argentina (38° 34S,58° 38 30 W). All individuals within an areaof 0.8 m2 were mapped during 12 censuses, from September 1990to May 1993. Population density within the study area varied between 401 and99 ind m-2. Spatial pattern was analysed using mean distancesto the nearest neighbour (NND), goodness of fit tests between observed andexpected frequency distributions of NND, and analysis of crowding. Thespatial pattern of the population was clumped during most of the studyperiod. This trend persisted, although not reaching statisticalsignificance, when the population density decreased as a consequence ofmortality and failure of successive annual recruitments. The cohortrecruited in summer 1992 (49 individuals) was randomly distributed relativeto adult barnacles already present within the study area. No consistentrelationship was observed between mortality and NND.  相似文献

Female budgerigars, provided with nest-boxes and exposed to male vocalizations, lay more rapidly under a 14 L: 10 D photoregime than under regimes involving shorter light periods, though some birds will lay even when kept under continuous darkness. Summary The distribution of lanthanum on the taste disc of the frog,Rana esculenta, afteren bloc staining of the tongue with lanthanum nitrate was studied at the ultrastructural level by means of scanning electron microscopy (in the secondary electron mode or in the back scattered electron mode), energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis, transmission electron microscopy and electron spectroscopic imaging. It was consistently found that lanthanum distribution on the surface of the taste disc is not homogeneous and that the surface of putative receptor cells is in contact with strongly lanthanum-positive material. Calcium co-localizes with lanthanum at that level. These results suggest that different microenvironments exist at the surface of the taste disc and that this could be relevant to the receptor function.  相似文献

Adhesives that are naturally produced by marine organisms are potential sources of inspiration in the search for medical adhesives. Investigations of barnacle adhesives are at an early stage but it is becoming obvious that barnacles utilize a unique adhesive system compared to other marine organisms. The current study examined the fine structure and chemistry of the glandular system that produces the adhesive of the barnacle Lepas anatifera. All components for the glue originated from large single‐cell glands (70–180 μm). Staining (including immunostaining) showed that L ‐3,4‐dihydroxyphenylalanine and phosphoserine were not present in the glue producing tissues, demonstrating that the molecular adhesion of barnacles differs from all other permanently gluing marine animals studied to date. The glandular tissue and adhesive secretion primarily consisted of slightly acidic proteins but also included some carbohydrate. Adhesive proteins were stored in cytoplasmic granules adjacent to an intracellular drainage canal (ICC); observations implicated both merocrine and apocrine mechanisms in the transport of the secretion from the cell cytoplasm to the ICC. Inside the ICC, the secretion was no longer contained within granules but was a flocculent material which became “clumped” as it traveled through the canal network. Hemocytes were not seen within the adhesive “apparatus” (comprising of the glue producing cells and drainage canals), nor was there any structural mechanism by which additions such as hemocytes could be made to the secretion. The unicellular adhesive gland in barnacles is distinct from multicellular adhesive systems observed in marine animals such as mussels and tubeworms. Because the various components are not physically separated in the apparatus, the barnacle adhesive system appears to utilize completely different and unknown mechanisms for maintaining the liquid state of the glue within the body, as well as unidentified mechanisms for the conversion of extruded glue into hard cement. Four muscular systems of the Tetraclita squamosa barnacle were observed by means of an electron microscope and it was revealed that these systems each bore different types of muscle cells. The four systems were the adductor (A), the lateral scutal depressor (LSD), the ventral scutal depressor (VSD), and the tergal depressor (TD). The A-system included cross stiated muscle cells which showed long sarcomeres (about 10 μm) and rather disordered arrays of myofilaments. The LSD-system included cross striated muscles which had medium length sarcomeres (about 6.7 μm) and rather ordered myofilamental arrays. The VSD-system was constructed of cross striated muscle cells which bore shorter sarcomeres (4.6 μm) than the previous three systems and ordered myofilamental arrays. This last type of cell also bore well-developed sarcoplasmic reticular systems. The TD-system included smooth muscle cells which showed rather ordered arrays of myofilaments and dense-bodies. Each muscular system, as described above, included to its advantage one type of cross striated or smooth muscle cell for its characteristic contraction. The relations between ultrastructures and functions of each muscular system will now be discussed.  相似文献
