Abstract. Extracellular single sensillum recordings were made from the double-walled multiporous sensilla coeloconica on the antennae of males and females of Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae). The receptor neurones responded to olfactory stimuli; no thermo- or hygroreceptors were found. Many neurones responded with a decrease of the transepithelial potential and increased rates of nerve impulses to aliphatic hydrocarbons with chain lengths between three and ten carbon atoms. Most abundant were neurones responding best to acids and aldehydes. Receptor neurones responding with a low threshold to only one acid of a certain chain length were considered as specialists. In some sensilla an increase of the transepithelial potential combined with nerve impulse inhibition was observed in response to monoterpene alcohols. Neurones responding with excitation to aliphatic acids and with inhibition to terpenes were found in the same sensilla. Some neurones excited by aliphatic acids were inhibited by terpenes. Responses to headspace volatiles of mulberry leaves, the larval food, were also obtained. Therefore the coeloconic sensilla may be involved in the selection of oviposition sites.  相似文献

Using the electro-physiological technique, the sensory mechanisms of maxillary sensilla styloconica to stimulants and deterrents were explored on two closely related species, the generalist Helicoverpa armigera and the specialist H. assulta. The results showed that: (i) in both species, cells sensitive to sucrose and azadirachtin were mainly in the lateral sensillum styloconicum, and those to inositol were in the medial sensillum styloconicum; (ii) sensitivity of medial sensillum styloconicum in H. assulta to inositol was higher than that in H. armigera; (iii) among 6 tested deterrents, only azadirachtin evoked high impulse discharge from the lateral sensillum styloconicum in both insects; (iv) the deterrents could disturb stimulants evoking impulse discharge from maxillary sensilla styloconica of both species in different degrees: To sucrose evoking impulses on lateral sensillum styloconicum, for H. armigera capsaicin had a strong inhibition and gossypol had a weak inhibition, while for H. assulta tann  相似文献

Electrophysiological evidence is given that water is the specific stimulus for a fourth sensory cell associated with the taste sensilla of the blowfly. Water elicited impulses from a single cell which responded in two distinct phases: an initial rapid rate of discharge followed by a lesser, sustained steady rate. The latter, in the case of sucrose solutions, was inhibited in direct proportion to the log of the osmotic pressure over a 104 range of pressures. Other non-electrolytes inhibited, but the effect could not be simply correlated with parameters of the solutions. Electrolytes inhibited the water response more sharply and at lower concentrations. The inhibition in all cases was not dependent on impulses in the other sensory cells of the taste sensillum.  相似文献

Summary Using glass-capillary microelectrodes, receptor potentials and nerve impulses were recorded from single olfactory units on the antennae of some coleoptera and lepidoptera. These units proved to be the receptor cell endings of sensilla basiconica. Qualitative as well as quantitative differences of responses from single olfactory units might be sufficient for the central-nervous-system to discriminate a rather large number of different odors.  相似文献

Feathered hair sensilla fringe both rami of the lobster (Homarus americanus) swimmeret. The sensory response to hair displacement was characterized by recording afferent impulses extracellularly from the swimmeret sensory nerve while deflecting sensilla with a rigidly-coupled probe or controlled water movements. Two populations of hairs were observed: "distal" hairs localized to the distal 1/3 of each ramus and "proximal" hairs near its base. Distal hairs are not innervated by a mechanosensory neuron but instead act as levers producing strain within adjacent cuticle capable of activating a nearby hypodermal mechanoreceptor. Hair deflections of 25 degrees or more are required to evoke an afferent response and this response is dependent on hair deflection direction. The frequency and duration of the afferent discharge evoked are determined by the velocity of hair displacement. Each proximal hair is innervated by a single mechanosensory neuron responding phasically to hair deflections as small as 0.2 degrees in amplitude. Deflection at frequencies up to 5 Hz elicits a single action potential for each hair movement; at higher frequencies many deflections fail to evoke an afferent response. These sensilla, which are mechanically coupled, may be activated by the turbulent flow of water produced by the swimmerets during their characteristic beating movements.  相似文献

Summary The responses of contact chemosensory sensilla on the tarsi of the apple maggot fly,Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), to a range of concentrations of salt, sucrose and oviposition-deterrent pheromone were studied (Fig. 1). Examination of dose-response curves (Fig. 2), short- and long-term adaptation (Figs. 3+4, Table 1) and impulse height and duration (Fig. 5, Table 2) indicated that each stimulant elicited a characteristic response. Stimulation with mixtures of the solutions demonstrated that salt, sucrose and the pheromone each excites a different sensory cell (Fig. 6). A cell which does not respond to a stimulant with impulses may, nevertheless, be affected by that stimulant (Fig. 7).  相似文献

Sensilla basiconica on the maxillary palps of female Aedes aegypti contain a receptor neuron which produces a phasic-tonic pattern of action potential response to low concentrations (150–300 ppm) of carbon dioxide (CO2), a stimulus known to be involved with host seeking behavior. These receptor neurons respond reliably to small increments in CO2 concentration (e.g., 50 ppm). We were particularly interested in evaluating the possibility that the sensitivity to step increases in CO2 concentration could be modulated by alterations in the background levels of CO2, over a range which might be encountered during host-seeking behavior. We report here that the response (impulses/s) to a single pulse of a given concentration of CO2 appears to be independent of the background level of CO2, unless that level is equal to or greater than the concentration of the stimulus pulse. Females of other mosquito species, including: Anopheles stephensi, Culex quinquefasciatus, Culiseta melanura, and Aedes taeniorhynchus, also possess sensilla with receptor neurons that respond with comparable sensitivity to CO2 stimulation. However, there is much interspecific variation in both the external morphology of the maxillary palp and the distribution of sensilla along the palp. Male Ae. aegypti have morphologically similar sensilla which also contain a receptor neuron that responds to CO2.  相似文献

External morphology of antennal sensilla on female and male Trichogramma australicum (Hymenoptera : Trichogrammatidae) was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Antennae show strong sexual dimorphism in structure and types of sensilla. The female antenna displays 14 types of sensilla: basiconic capitate peg sensilla (types 1 and 2), campaniform sensilla, chaetica sensilla (types 1–3), coeloconic sensilla, falcate sensilla, placoid sensilla (types 1 and 2), styloconic sensilla and trichoid sensilla (types 1–3). The male antenna displays 12 types of sensilla: basiconic capitate peg sensilla (type 2), campaniform sensilla, chaetica sensilla (types 1–5), coeloconic sensilla, placoid sensilla (type 1), and trichoid sensilla (types 3–5). Falcate and styloconic sensilla occur only on the female antenna. Both sensilla probably are associated with host examination, host discrimination and oviposition behaviour. Male antennal trichoid sensilla types 4 and 5 are probably associated with courtship behaviour, because these types occur only on the male. We propose the term “falcate sensilla” for a unique female antennal sensilla; the number of falcate sensilla may be used for identification of Trichogramma spp. In addition, we report the presence of placoid sensilla type 2 and difference in structure of coeloconic sensilla in T. australicum. Variation in structure and position of antennal sensilla are discussed.  相似文献

Eriborus applititus Sheng & Sun (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is a specialist parasitoid of the small carpenter moth Holcocerus insularis Staudinger (Lepidoptera: Cossidae). Each year damages to trees caused by H. insularis lead to extensive economic and ecological losses. E. applititus is thus a promising candidate for use as a biocontrol agent against H. insularis. To investigate the means by which E. applititus locates and parasitizes H. insularis, we used scanning electron microscopy to determine the morphology and distribution of sensilla on antenna, ovipositor and leg of male and female E. applititus. Eight different sensilla types were found: sensilla chaetica, sensilla trichodea, sensilla placodea, sensilla basiconica, sensilla coeloconica, sensilla pit basiconica, sensilla campaniformia and Böhm's bristles. The sensilla types were differently distributed in the three organs. In addition, differences between sexes were found in the distribution of sensilla trichodea type 2, sensilla placodea and sensilla chaetica type 4. Putative functions of the sensilla are discussed based on the morphological and location data and on previous research. Chemosensitive sensilla are putatively involved in host detection, pheromone detection and host discrimination processes. Mechanoreceptive sensilla likely function as vibrational sensors and are thought to be critical for accurate ovipositor positioning.  相似文献

The pollination of the genus Arum (Araceae) is mainly achieved by deception, the floral odour mimicking the pollinator ovipositing site. In order to discover the sensory organs involved in this attraction, we have studied the antennae of five species of psychodine moth-flies (former Psychoda sensu lato=Psychodini), pollinators of Arum spp. The antennae of the five Psychodini reveal seven types of sensilla: multiporous tribranched sensilla basiconica (sensilla ascoidea), multiporous sensilla basiconica, multiporous sensilla coeloconica, multiporous sensilla auricillica, uniporous sensilla basiconica, aporous sensilla chaetica, aporous Böhm’s sensilla. Each species possesses three, five or six of these sensillum types. All the multiporous sensilla are probably olfactory receptors while the uniporous sensilla basiconica must possess a contact chemoreceptive function. The multiporous tribranched sensilla basiconica (s. ascoidea), present in all the species, are the best candidates for the reception of the odours given off by the ovipositing sites and the inflorescences of Arum. The multiporous sensilla basiconica and the multiporous sensilla coeloconica may be involved respectively as CO2 receptors or thermoreceptors. Psychoda phalaenoides, which is the main pollinator of A. maculatum, is the species which possesses the largest number of antennal sensilla. The sexual dimorphism, studied only in Psycha grisescens, as concerns the number of sensilla and the absence of a sensillum type which differ according to sex, is difficult to interpret.

Most species of Staphylinidae are predators in an agroecosystem. They acquire prey information from their environment through receptors. In this study, the sensilla on maxillary and labial palps of Philonthus kailiensis, Philonthus lewisius and Quedius robustus were examined with scanning electron microscopy to identify and analyse the external morphology and distribution of the sensilla to enhance our knowledge of the sensilla of Staphylinidae and provide a rationale of taxonomical studies on the two genus. Results showed that the sensilla are classified into six types: Böhm bristles, sensilla chaetica, sensilla furcate, sensilla coeloconica, sensilla placodea and sensilla basiconica. No sexual dimorphism exists among the three species. The relationships and functions of sensilla on maxillary and labial palps were also speculated. There may be a certain correlation between the sensilla on maxillary and labial palps of the staphylinid and its habitat.  相似文献

Tetrastichus sp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is a primary parasitoid of the Metisa plana (Lepidoptera: Psychidae), an oil palm bagworm. The sensilla on the surface of the antenna and ovipositor of Tetrastichus sp. were examined using a scanning electron microscope. The antennae of both male and female Tetrastichus sp. are geniculate in shape and hinged at the scape-pedicel joint. The female antenna is about 200 µm longer than the male antenna. However, the male antenna has an additional flagellomere compared to the female antenna. In total, eight different types of antennal sensilla were observed on the antenna of Tetrastichus sp.: trichoid sensilla type 1, 2, 3, 4, placoid sensilla type 1 and 2, basiconic sensilla, and campaniform sensilla. The antenna of the female Tetrastichus sp. lacks placoid sensilla type 2 and campaniform sensilla. The distribution and abundance of the antennal sensilla were compared between the male and female Tetrastichus sp. and discussed. On the ovipositor stylet of Tetrastichus sp., coeloconic sensilla, styloconic sensilla and campaniform sensilla were observed. Trichoid sensilla were observed at the medial part of the distal extremity of the ovipositor.  相似文献

A comparison was performed of the antennal sensilla of females of four chalcid wasp species Ceratosolen emarginatus Mayr, 1906, Sycophaga sp., Philotrypesis longicaudata Mayr, 1906, and Sycoscapter roxburghi Joseph, 1957, which are specific and obligatory associated with Ficus auriculata (Lour, 1790). The four species exhibit different oviposition strategies in the fig ovules where their offspring hatch and develop. Antennal sensilla morphology was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. Females of the four species present 11 morphologically similar types of sensilla: trichoid sensilla, sensilla obscura, chaetica sensilla 1 and 2, which all have mechanosensory functions; uniporous basiconic sensilla, which are presumably contact chemosensilla; basiconic capitate peg sensilla, coeloconic sensilla 1, multiporous basiconic and placoid sensilla, which may be regarded as olfactory sensilla, and coeloconic sensilla 2 and 3, which are presumed to be proprioreceptors or pressure receptors. The four species have significant differences in the abundance and arrangement of trichoid sensilla and chaetica sensilla 1 on the flagellum. The coeloconic sensilla and sensilla obscura only occur on the antennae of C. emarginatus that enter figs. The chemosensilla which are presumably involved in host discrimination, i.e., basiconic sensilla, multiporous placoid sensilla and basiconic capitate peg sensilla, are similar in shape and configuration, although they present some differences in abundance. These findings provide practical information on the adaptations of fig wasps and the relationship between multisensory antennae and functions in fig wasp behaviour.  相似文献

The antennal sensilla of male and female Pseudoperichaeta nigrolineata Walker (Diptera: Tachinidae) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Five types of sensilla were identified on the funicle. The trichoid sensilla are most conspicuous, with a characteristic distal curvature and wall pores. Basiconic types I and II sensilla show a small peg with a pitted surface. Basiconic type III sensilla can be distinguished from the preceding ones by the swelling of the distal region of the peg. The function of these sensilla is likely to be olfactory. Coeloconic sensilla consist of a short grooved peg sunk in a socket. The number and distribution of the sensilla of each type are described. Female antennae bear more basiconic sensilla than those of males. These results are compared with previously published studies on other muscoid species.  相似文献

Metaphycus parasaissetiae Zhang & Huang (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is an important adult parasitoid of Parasaissetia nigra Nietner (Hemiptera: Coccoidea). The external morphology of the antennal sensilla of male and female M. parasaissetiae was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The geniculate antennae of male and female M. parasaissetiae were composed of a scape with a basal radicula, a barrel-shaped pedicel, and a long flagellum. Twelve morphologically distinct types of sensilla were identified, including multiporous placoid sensilla, campaniform sensilla, finger-like sensilla, multiporous basiconic sensilla (BS-1), three aporous types of basiconic sensilla (BS-2, BS-3, and BS-4), two types of aporous trichoid sensilla (TS-1 and TS-3), a type of multiporous trichoid sensilla (TS-2), and two types of sensilla chaetica (CH-1 and CH-2). Sex dimorphism in the sensilla composition of M. parasaissetiae is also observed. Major differences between the sexes were found in the number, distribution, shape, structure, and size of the identified sensilla. We also discuss on the functional aspects of these sensilla to elucidate the mechanisms involved in host searching and courtship behavior of M. parasaissetiae.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of antennal sensilla was investigated in males and females of 5 European Yponomeuta species. Three types of olfactory sensilla could be distinguished, i.e. sensilla trichodea, sensilla basiconica, and sensilla coeloconica. Sexual dimorphism in the number of cells innervating sensilla trichodea could be established in 3 species. Most of these sensilla in males of Y. vigintipunctatus, Y. rorellus, and Y. cagnagellus are associated with 3 sensory cells, whereas in females of these species these sensilla contain 2 sensory cells. In both males and females of Y. padeltus and Y. malinellus, the great majority of the sensilla trichodea is innervated by 3 cells. So-called sensilla chaetica type 1 show features typical of a combined mechano/contact-chemoreceptor. No structures indicating a sensory function were found in sensilla chaetica type 11. Sensilla styloconica contain 3 cells, the dendritic outer segment of one being lamellated; most likely, these cells have a thermo- and hygroreceptive function. The findings concerning the olfactory sensilla are discussed in the context of olfactory communication and reproductive isolation in European Yponomeuta.  相似文献
