The micropterygid moth Neomicropteryx nipponensis belongs to the most primitive suborder Zeugloptera of the Lepidoptera. During embryogenesis the small circular germ disk formed on the ventral egg surface invaginates deeply into the yolk. It finally separates from the egg periphery or rudimentary serosa, and becomes a sac-shaped germ rudiment. Its anterior part later develops into the germ band, while its posterior part is the future amnion. Just before revolution of the embryo, the embryo assumes a completely superficial position beneath the yolk. Neither amnion nor serosa rupture during revolution; by completion of dorsal closure they have been incorporated into the yolk to form the secondary dorsal organ. The formation of the germ rudiment and embryonic membranes in N. nipponensis resembles those of swift moths, Endoclyta (suborder Monotrysia) and of the caddisflies, Stenopsyche (Trichoptera), but differs from those of ditrysian Lepidoptera. The secondary dorsal organ has never been found in any other lepidopteran embryos; however, it is formed in N. nipponensis and in the Trichoptera. The results of the present study strongly support the general phylogenetic views that the Zeugloptera have a close affinity to the Trichoptera.  相似文献

External features of the egg, developing embryo, and first instar nymph of Kamimuria tibialis are described. The embryonic development from the germ disc to the full-grown embryo is divided into 12 stages. The saclike embryonic rudiment is formed by the bending and folding of the germ disc. The embryo first elongates at the egg surface and then sinks into the yolk due to caudal flexure. In the head, four paired protocerebral lobes differentiate and the fourth lobes are thought to be the rudiments of preantennal ganglia. The columnar serosal cells appear at the posterior pole of the egg and they disappear before katatrepsis. The coniform chloride cells occur at the hind margins of the first nine abdominal segments in the full-grown embryo and first instar nymph. Amnion formation in K. tibialis is very similar to that of Allonarcys proteus and the Isoptera. It is proposed that the immersed type of growth pattern of embryos is divided into two subtypes in hemimetabolous insects; one is in the Palaeoptera and Paraneoptera, and the other is in the Plecoptera, Orthoptera, Notoptera, Isoptera, Embioptera, and the blattarian, Periplaneta americana.  相似文献

Insect embryo segmentation is largely divided into long and short germ types. In the long germ type, each segment primordium is represented on a large embryonic rudiment of the blastoderm, and segmental patterning occurs nearly simultaneously in the syncytium. In the short germ type, however, only anterior segments are represented in the small embryonic rudiment, usually located on the egg posterior, and the rest of the segments are added sequentially from the posterior growth zone in a cellular context. The long germ type is thought to have evolved from the short germ type. It is proposed that this transition, which appears to have occurred multiple times over the course of evolution, was realized through the acquisition of a localized anterior instruction center. Here, I examined the early segmentation process in the silkmoth Bombyx mori, a lepidopteran insect, in which the mechanisms of anterior-posterior (AP) axis formation have not been well analyzed. In this insect, both the long germ and short germ features have been reported. The mRNAs for two key genes involved in insect AP axis formation, orthodenticle (Bm-otd) and caudal (Bm-cad), are localized maternally in the germ anlage, where they act as anterior and posterior instruction centers, respectively. RNAi studies indicate that, while Bm-cad affects the formation of all the even skipped (Bm-eve) stripes, there is also anterior Bm-eve stripe formation activity that involves Bm-otd. Thus, there is redundancy in Bm-eve stripe formation activity that must be coordinated. Some genetic interactions, identified either experimentally or hypothetically, are also introduced, which might enable robust AP formation in this organism.  相似文献

The embryonic development of the hemipteran insect Rhodnius prolixus was studied by use of contemporary light and electron microscopy. Embryos were staged according to days postoviposition. Eggs laid on day one complete blastoderm formation and anatrepsis, the first phase of blastokinesis, by day 5. The embryo develops in a cephalocaudal orientation which is 180° to the anteroposterior axis of the egg. Subsequent development, prior to the second phase of blastokinesis (katatrepsis), leads to segmentation of the germ band, evagination of appendages, and histogenesis of germ layers. Concomitantly with these events, the amnion undergoes dramatic change. By day 7 the embryo begins a 180° revolution while migrating to the ventral surface of the yolk. This restores its polarity with respect to that of the egg and facilitates hatching. The serosa contracts, pulling the amnion and embryo anteriorly. Eventually the serosa is internalized at a point dorsal to the head and the lateral walls of the embryo grow up and surround the yolk. Development continues until day 15 when the embryo hatches as a first instar larva.  相似文献

Vasa is a widely conserved germline marker, both in vertebrates and invertebrates. We identify a vasa orthologue, Sgvasa, and use it to study germline development in the grasshopper Schistocerca gregaria, a species in which no germ plasm has been identified. In adults, Sgvasa is specifically expressed in the ovary and testis. It is expressed at high levels during early oogenesis, but no detectable vasa RNA and little Vasa protein are present in mature unlaid eggs. None appears to be localized to any defined region of the egg cortex, suggesting that germline specification may not depend on maternal germ plasm expressing vasa. Vasa protein is expressed in most cleavage energids as they reach the egg surface and persists at high levels in most cells aggregating to form the embryonic primordium. However, after gastrulation, Vasa protein persists only in extraembryonic membranes and in cells at the outer margin of the late heart-stage embryo. In the embryo, it then become restricted to cells at the dorsal margin of the forming abdomen. In older embryos, these Vasa-positive cells move toward the midline; Vasa protein accumulates asymmetrically in their cytoplasm, a pattern closely resembling that of germ cells in late embryonic gonads. Thus, we suggest that the Vasa-stained cells in the abdominal margin are germ cells, as proposed by Nelson (1934), and not cardioblasts, as has been proposed by others.  相似文献

The fate of the embryonic endoderm (generally called visceral embryonic endoderm) of prestreak and early primitive streak stages of the mouse embryo was studied in vitro by microinjecting horseradish peroxidase into single axial endoderm cells of 6.7-day-old embryos and tracing the labelled descendants either through gastrulation (1 day of culture) or to early somite stages (2 days of culture). Descendants of endoderm cells from the anterior half of the axis were found at the extreme cranial end of the embryo after 1 day and in the visceral yolk sac endoderm after 2 days, i.e. they were displaced anteriorly and anterolaterally. Descendants of cells originating over and near the anterior end of the early primitive streak, i.e. posterior to the distal tip of the egg cylinder, were found after 1 day over the entire embryonic axis and after 2 days in the embryonic endoderm at the anterior intestinal portal, in the foregut, along the trunk and postnodally, as well as anteriorly and posteriorly in the visceral yolk sac. Endoderm covering the posterior half of the early primitive streak contributed to postnodal endoderm after 1 day (at the late streak stage) and mainly to posterior visceral yolk sac endoderm after 2 days. Clonal descendants of axial endoderm were located after 2 days either over the embryo or in the yolk sac; the few exceptions spanned the caudal end of the embryo and the posterior yolk sac. The clonal analysis also showed that the endoderm layer along the posterior half of the axis of prestreak- and early-streak-stage embryos is heterogeneous in its germ layer fate. Whereas the germ layer location of descendants from anterior sites did not differ after 1 day from that expected from the initial controls (approx. 90% exclusively in endoderm), only 62% of the successfully injected posterior sites resulted in labelled cells exclusively in endoderm; the remainder contributed partially or entirely to ectoderm and mesoderm. This loss from the endoderm layer was compensated by posterior-derived cells that remained in endoderm having more surviving descendants (8.4 h population doubling time) than did anterior-derived cells (10.5 h population doubling time). There was no indication of cell death at the prestreak and early streak stages; at least 93% of the cells were proliferating and more than half of the total axial population were in, or had completed, a third cell cycle after 22 h culture.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

The egg structure and outline of the embryonic development of Metallyticus splendidus of one of the basal Mantodea representatives, Metallyticidae, were described in the present study. The results obtained were compared with those from the previous studies, to reconstruct and discuss the groundplan of Mantodea and Dictyoptera. In M. splendidus, the egg is spheroidal, it has a convex ventral side at the center in which numerous micropyles are grouped, and it possesses a conspicuous hatching line in its anterior half. These are the groundplan features of mantodean eggs and the “grouped micropyles in the ventral side of the egg” are regarded as an apomorphic groundplan feature of Dictyoptera. A small circular embryo is formed by a simple concentration of blastoderm cells, which then undergoes embryogenesis of the typical short germ band type. Blastokinesis is of the “non-reversion type” and the embryo keeps its original superficial position and original orientation throughout embryonic development. During the middle stages of development, the embryo undergoes rotation around the egg's anteroposterior axis. These features are a part of the groundplan of Mantodea. It is uncertain whether sharing of the “non-reversion type” of blastokinesis by Mantodea and blaberoidean Blattodea can be regarded as homology or homoplasy.  相似文献

The egg morphology and successive changes of developing embryos of the whirligig beetle, Dineutus mellyi (Adephaga: Gyrinidae) are described from observations based on light and scanning electron microscopy. The egg surface is characterized by minute conical projections covering the entire egg surface, a stalk‐like micropylar projection at the anterior pole of the egg, and a longitudinal split line along which the chorion is cleaved during the middle embryonic stages. The germ band or embryo is formed on the ventral egg surface, and develops on the surface throughout the egg period; thus, the egg is a superficial type, as is the case in most coleopteran species. A pair of lateral tracheal gills (LTGs) of the first abdominal segment originates from appendage‐like projections arising at the lateral side of pleuropodia, and the LTGs of the second to ninth abdominal segments are arranged in a row with that of the first segment. Therefore, LTGs are structures with serial homology. The paired dorsal tracheal gills (DTGs) of the ninth abdominal segment are formed on the regions just latero‐dorsal to the LTGs of this segment. Regarding the pleuropodia as the structures being homologous with thoracic legs, neither the LTGs nor DTGs are homologous with thoracic legs, but originate in the more lateral region corresponding to the future pleura of the thoracic segments. The last (10th) abdominal segment in the larva is formed by the fusion of the embryonic 10th and 11th abdominal segments. Four terminal hooks at the end of the last abdominal segment originate from two pairs of swellings on the posterior end of the embryonic 11th abdominal segment. It is proposed that the terminal hooks possibly correspond to the claws of medially fused cerci of the embryonic 11th abdominal segment. J. Morphol. 2012. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The morphogenetic changes of the serosal membrane during embryonic development of Cardiochiles nigriceps Viereck (Hymenoptera : Braconidae) were investigated. Eggs observed soon after oviposition into the natural host Heliothis virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) showed a transparent chorion and a uniform texture. After 5 hr, the embryo exhibited a distinct granular appearance and by 12 hr attained the germ band stage. A serosal membrane originated from the anterior pole of the embryo between 14 and 15 hr after the egg was laid, eventually forming with the cells both in the anterior and posterior pole a continuous envelope around the developing embryo.Ultrastructural observations revealed that the serosal cells in contact with the abdominal region of the embryo, beginning 24–25 hr after oviposition, formed a syncytium. However, the syncytial tissue did not extend to the cells around the head and thorax. The serosal cells at both embryo poles increased in size without losing their structural organization, and developed into teratocytes when the larva hatched. In contrast, the serosal cells surrounding the body of the embryo persisted longer on the head and thorax region of the newly hatched larva, while the syncytial tissue degraded more rapidly after hatching. In vitro rearing experiments showed that C. nigriceps embryos removed from parasitized host larvae just before and just after serosa formation, hatched only when the medium used was formulated with the addition of fetal bovine serum. Embryos did not develop or hatch when placed in a serum-free medium. Once the syncytium deriving from the serosal membrane became evident, embryos readily developed and hatched in serumfree media. The results of this study seem to suggest that the serosal embryonic membrane could have a nutritional role for the developing parasitoid embryo.  相似文献

We collected 20 checkered keelback snakes (Xenochrophis piscator) to study embryonic growth and mobilization of energy and material during incubation. Females laid eggs between late May and late June. The eggs were incubated at 27 degrees C (+/-0.3). One egg from each clutch was dissected at five-day intervals starting at oviposition. The mean incubation length at 27 degrees C was 48.9 days. We identified three phases of embryonic growth or yolk depletion in X. piscator. Phase 1, between oviposition and Day 20, was one of minimal transfer of energy and material from yolk to embryo. Phase 2, between Day 20 and Day 39-40, was characterized by increasingly rapid embryonic growth or yolk depletion. Phase 3, between Day 39-40 and hatching, was characterized by reduced embryonic growth or yolk depletion. Approximately 71% of dry mass, 53% of non-polar lipids and 66% of energy were transferred from the egg contents to the hatchling during incubation. Our data confirm that oviposition is not timed to coincide with the onset of rapid embryonic growth in oviparous squamate reptiles. The greater conversion efficiencies of energy and material from egg to hatchling in snakes can be attributed to their lower energetic costs of embryonic development and greater residual yolk sizes.

Protein, glycogen, and lipid concentrations were followed in Solenopsis invicta queens, the imported fire ant, from egg deposition until the production of the first minim workers approximately 21 days later. During this time, the weight of the queens decreased from 14·7 to 7·5 mg. Immediately following egg deposition, total protein decreased by over 50 per cent for the first 6 days, then rose steadily for 9 days, then once again decreased markedly throughout the remainder of the study. Glycogen concentrations decreased rapidly from the 0·35 mg/ant found at oviposition until day 12. From this time until the end of the study, this polysaccharide remained constant at about 10 mg/ant. Lipid concentrations remained at 4·1 mg/ant for the first 9 days following oviposition, then steadily decreased to 2·3 mg/ant when the first minim workers were produced 12 days later.  相似文献

The mode of sexual reproduction and embryogenesis was compared in 3 species of Botrylloides: B. simodensis, B. lenis, and B. violaceus. In all species, a testis and an egg (occasionally 2 eggs), the former being anterior to the latter, mature in the mantle on either side of a zooid. The egg is surrounded by 2 follicular layers and is attached by a vesicular follicle stalk (oviduct) to the atrial brood pouch. The egg is ovulated into the brood pouch, where it is fertilized and undergoes embryogenesis. The egg of B. simodensis is heavily yolked and measures about 180 μm in diameter. The course of embryogenesis in this species is that typical of ascidians. A mature tadpole larva is produced and shed in about 5 days; then, the mother zooid degenerates. The larva is smallest of the three species and has 8 ampullae. The metamorphosed oozooid bears a single bud on the right side only. Extraembryonic nutrition seems to be very limited. Both Botrylloides lenis and B. violaceus are species which display extreme examples of viviparity. Their eggs are devoid of yolk granules, measuring about 90 μm in diameter in the former species and 60 μm in the latter. The course of embryogenesis is similar in these 2 species. The neurula stage is characterized by a spherical vesicular shape owing to precocious differentiation of the embryonic pharynx, whose ectoderm becomes vacuolated. At the posterior end of the neurula, the mesodermal cells are located in a mass, from which the tail is extended later. In B. lenis, embryogenesis takes about 20 days. At the neurula stage of the embryo, the mother zooid becomes a mantle sac as a result of visceral disintegration. During further embryogenesis, the growth of buds of successive generations in the colony is characteristically arrested. A swimming larva of this species is somewhat larger than that of B. simodensis. It has 14–24 ampullae, and the oozooid carries a single bud on its right side. In B. violaceus, the gestation period lasts for more than a month. At the early gastrula stage of the embryo, the body of the mother zooid fully disintegrates. Only the brood pouch bearing the embryo survives and remains connected with the colonial vascular system. In this species, sexual reproduction does not affect the growth of buds in the colony. The swimming larva is gigantic, being furnished with 24–34 ampullae, and the oozooid always bears 3 buds, 2 on the right side and one on the left side.  相似文献

We used the red-necked keelback (Rhabdophis tigrinus lateralis) as a model animal to study embryonic growth and mobilization of energy and material in oviposited snake eggs. Females (N=12) laid eggs between late May and early June. Eggs were incubated at 30 (+/-0.3) degrees C. One egg from each clutch was dissected at five-day intervals starting at oviposition. Incubation length averaged 27.9 days. Three phases of embryonic growth or yolk depletion could be detected in this study. The first phase, between oviposition and Day 10, was one of minimal transfer of energy and material from yolk to embryo. The second phase, between Day 10 and Day 22-23, was characterized by increasingly rapid embryonic growth and yolk depletion. The third phase, between Day 22-23 and hatching, was characterized by a gradual reduction in embryonic growth and yolk depletion. Approximately 73.6% of dry mass, 50.0% of non-polar lipids and 57.8% of energy were transferred from egg to embryo during incubation. Embryos withdrew mineral from the eggshell mainly during the last quarter of incubation. Our data show that oviposition does not coincide with the onset of rapid embryonic growth in oviparous species of squamate reptiles that are positioned midway within the oviparity-viviparity continuum, and that the greater conversion efficiencies of energy and material from egg to hatchling in snakes can be mainly attributed to their lower energetic costs of embryonic development and greater residual yolk sizes.  相似文献

The band-legged ground cricket Dianemobius nigrofasciatus enters diapause at an early embryonic stage when adults are reared under short-day conditions or the eggs are exposed to a low temperature. We examined the morphological features of the embryo during early development and determined the exact stage of entry into diapause. In non-diapause eggs, no periplasmic space was observed in the surface region and a small number of nuclei surrounded by cytoplasm (energids) were found among the yolk granules and lipid droplets 12 h after egg laying (AEL) at 25°C. The energids sparsely but evenly populated the surface region at 40 h AEL, but there were some gaps between these energids. A continuous thin layer of nuclei with cytoplasm had completely covered the egg surface at 56 h AEL, suggesting that the blastoderm is formed between 40 and 56 h AEL. At 72 h AEL, we found a germ band at the posterior pole. Electron microscopy revealed clear cell membranes at 40 h AEL. Staining with rhodamine-dextran dye demonstrated that the cell membrane is formed when the nuclei appear on the egg surface at 12–24 h AEL. These results indicate that cellularization occurs before blastoderm formation. In diapause eggs, neither the embryonic rudiment nor germ band was formed, but a continuous layer of cells covered the egg surface. It is concluded that D. nigrofasciatus enters diapause at the cellular blastoderm.  相似文献

In the machilid Pedetonutus unimaculatus, a germ disc is formed by the aggregation and proliferation of cells within a broadly defined embryonic area. Cells adjacent to the embryonic area form the serosal fold that grows beneath the embryo. Then the embryonic margin is extended to form a cell layer or amnion that lies between the embryo and serosal fold. Thus, an amnioserosal fold is formed by the addition of the amnion to the serosal fold. Serosal cells cover the entire surface of the egg and begin to secrete a serosal cuticle. Soon the amnioserosal fold is withdrawn, and the embryo is exposed to the egg surface. The spreading amnion replaces the serosal cells that finally degenerate through the formation of a secondary dorsal organ. In the areas of amnion anterior and lateral to the embryo, yolk folds form and encompass the embryo. The amnion is a provisional dorsal closure and never participates in the formation of the definitive one. The amnioserosal fold of the Microcoryphia appears to have the functional role of secreting a serosal cuticle beneath the embryo. This fold of the Microcoryphia may be regarded as an ancestral form of the amnioserosal folds of the Thysanura-Pterygota. the yolk folds may appear to be passive transformation of the yolk mass linked to positioning of the growing embryo within the egg. There is no evidence that the yolk folds and the cavity appearing between them in the Microcoryphia are homologous to the amnioserosal fold and amniotic cavity in the Thysanura-Pterygota. The yolk folds appear to be one of the embryological autapomorphies in the Microcoryphia. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Early embryonic development, from the first cleavage to the germ-disk stage, in the theridiid spider Achaearanea japonica was examined by light and electron microscopy. The eggs are syncytial during the first four cleavages, and then invaginations of cell membranes fuse to generate the blastomeres at the sixteen-nucleus stage. The cleavage pattern is a modified type of total cleavage. It appears that radial bundles of microtubules that radiate from the perinuclear cytoplasm may participate in the migration of cleavage nuclei for the formation of the blastoderm. The large yolk granules are sequestered by cell membranes from the blastomeres or blastoderm cells into the interior of the embryo together with various organelles and glycogen granules. Most of the blastoderm cells converge in the upper hemisphere to form the germ disk, whereas a few cells remain in the lower hemisphere. The embryo at the germ-disk stage contains many spherical germ-disk cells. Almost no large yolk granules are found in these cells, but the flat remaining cells each contain several large yolk granules. These remaining cells may preserve a flat shape to cover the surface of the embryo that does not include the germ disk. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
