Garfish, Belone belone (L.), were collected from commercial fishermen between May and September of 1987 from around the Swedish coast. Fish belonging to the year classes of 1983, 1984 and 1985 dominated the catch, with very few fish from the year classes of 1980, 1981 and 1982. Maturity stages and condition were investigated, and estimates of fecundity calculated; these ranged from 2193 to 10804 eggs per ripe female. Examination of gut contents showed fish, especially juvenile clupeids and gasterosteids, as well as isopods and amphipods, to be the most important components of their diet. Garfish populations from both the Baltic and the west coasts were parasitized by copepods of the genus Caligus . A study of meristic characteristics showed a significant difference between the number of vertebrae in fish from the Baltic and those captured on the west coast of Sweden.  相似文献

The present work was aimed at determining the growth parameters of the garfish, Belone belone, a commercially important pelagic fish species in Izmir Bay (Aegean Sea). A total of 347 garfish specimens was collected during the period January–December 1997 from purse‐seine boats operating in Izmir Bay. Fork length and total weight of the specimens ranged from 26.0 to 54.5 cm and from 16.51 to 281.73 g, respectively. Maximum age group determined was V for females and IV for males. Female : male ratio was 1 : 0.45. Most specimens belonged to age group II. The von Bertalanffy growth equations for length and weight were for both sexes.  相似文献

An account is given of certain aspects of the biology of the garfish, Belone belone , captured by sea anglers from Courtmacsherry Bay, Co. Cork. Fish were aged by otoliths, and found to grow most rapidly in their first 2 years, females attaining a greater mean size than males. Most of the fish caught had already spawned. From examination of their gonads and lengths of juveniles collected in the neuston, spawning would appear to take place there mostly in the month of June.  相似文献

Adult garfish were captured by rod and line from Courtmacsherry Bay, Co. Cork, southern Ireland. Examination of gut contents showed that they feed on crustaceans, especially crab larvae, and juvenile fish, mostly clupeids. They also take stranded insects from the sea surface. Post-larval garfish were found to be feeding on the smaller elements of the neuston, such as copepods and larval bryozoans.  相似文献

BackgroundGarfish, (Belone belone) is a migratory pelagic fish that inhabits the waters of coastal Europe, North Africa, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea. Little information about garfish has been disseminated mainly because of its low abundance and its brief occurrence in various water bodies. Data is lacking on mercury compounds, particularly dangerous the toxic organic form of methylmercury (MeHg), which endangers the health of fish and their consumers.MethodsThe research material was garfish caught off the southern Baltic Sea coast in Puck Bay during the spawning period. Total mercury (THg) content was assayed with the cold vapour atomic absorption method in an AMA 254 mercury analyser. The MeHg extraction procedure was based on three-step sequential extraction method: hydrolysis using of hydrochloric acid, extract by toluene, bind the MeHg by L-cysteine.ResultsThe concentrations of THg and MeHg was determined in the muscle of garfish. The highest concentrations of THg (0.210 mg kg-1) and MeHg (0154 mg kg-1) were detected in the longest specimens (80 cm). The THg and MeHg concentrations in garfish muscles increased with specimens length, weight and age, which was confirmed by positive correlations. Differences were also noted depending on sex. Males accumulated more THg and MeHg than did females. The mercury in garfish from the southern Baltic Sea occurred mainly in its organic form MeHg and accounted for 84.7% of the THg.ConclusionSignificant differences were noted in mercury concentrations depends on length, weight, age and sex. Concentration of MeHg in garfish must be done by length class, and fish sex when selecting this fish for contamination studies and risk assessment. The toxic MeHg in garfish tissues did not pose a threat to the health of consumers, as indicated by the low values of EDI, TWI and THQ indices.  相似文献

AIMS: To evaluate biogenic amine formation and microbial spoilage in fresh and thawed chilled garfish. METHODS AND RESULTS: Storage trials were carried out with fresh and thawed garfish fillets at 0 or 5 degrees C in air or in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP: 40% CO2 and 60% N2). During storage, sensory, chemical and microbial changes were recorded and histamine formation by isolates from the spoilage microflora was evaluated at 5 degrees C. Photobacterium phosphoreum was responsible for histamine formation (>1000 ppm) in chilled fresh garfish. The use of MAP did not reduce the histamine formation. Strongly histamine-producing P. phosphoreum isolates formed 2080-4490 ppm at 5 degrees C, whereas below 60 ppm was formed by other P. phosphoreum isolates. Frozen storage inactivated P. phosphoreum and consequently reduced histamine formation in thawed garfish at 5 degrees C markedly. CONCLUSIONS: Photobacterium phosphoreum can produce above 1000 ppm of histamine in chilled fresh garfish stored both in air and in MAP. Freezing inactivates P. phosphoreum, extends shelf life and markedly reduces histamine formation in thawed MAP garfish during chilled storage. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: At 5 degrees C, more than 1000 ppm of histamine was formed in garfish; thus even when it is chilled this product represents a histamine fish-poisoning risk.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the monthly dietary pattern in migratory garfish and to improve our understanding in the seasonality of prey choice. Gut contents of 597 Belone belone specimens collected from the eastern Aegean Sea (Turkey) were analyzed: 79.2% contained food in their guts and 20.8% had empty guts. Crustaceans (36.7%) were the most important prey with a 36.7 index of relative importance (%IRI). Especially brachyurans (13.0%) and copepods played a major role (10.1%), followed by teleosts (26.1%) and other food categories (23.3%) (much of which was of terrestrial origin, including insects). Nannocalanus minor, Clausocalanus arcuicornis, Temora stylifera, Labidocera wollastoni and Oncea media were important copepods found in the guts of B. belone specimens. Analysis of variance of the monthly weight data indicated no significant seasonal differences, except for January and February.  相似文献

In the present EM study, we investigate the retina of Belone belone , a visually-orientated marine predator living close to the water surface. In the duplex retina, four morphologically different cone types are observed: unequal and equal double cones, long single cones and triple cones. In the light-adapted state, five different cone patterns occur: row, twisted row, square, pentagonal and hexagonal patterns. High double cone densities are found ventro-nasally, ventro-temporally and dorso-temporally. Throughout the retina the double cone/single cone ratio is 2 : 1, in the ventral part, however, a 1 : 1 ratio occurs. In the vitreous body we found a curtain-like intraocular septum dividing the retina into two morphologically different regions. In most areas of the dark-adapted retina the cone patterns are absent at the ellipsoid level, with long single cones standing more vitreally in the light path than double cones. The mosaics are retained, however, in the outer nuclear layer. Typical dark adaptation, i.e. the retinomotor movements of the retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors in response to the dark adaptation (light change) is not present in the peripheral ventral and parts of the central ventral area. In both regions we found a twisted row pattern of cones having a vitreal position. The findings are discussed with respect to the photic habitat and feeding habits of this species.  相似文献

A population of Channa gachua in a small irrigation canal that supplies rice fields was studied by monthly sampling over 2 years. The population density was positively correlated with the rainfall and varied from 0.34 to 0.95 individuals m−2. The growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation determined on monthly size–frequency data were Lx = 179 mm total length and K =0.50. Overall male to female ratio was 0.82 and there were more females than males in the middle size classes. Spawning occurred throughout the year, but all evidence indicated enhanced breeding during major rainy periods of May to July and October to December. The length at first spawning was 102 mm, which is reached in about 20 months. Fecundity, which varied between 389 and 2130, was positively correlated with gonad weight, body weight and total length. Longevity and natural mortality were estimated as 6 years and l.27 yr−1, respectively. However, 99% of the population appeared to live for only 3 years. The mean biomass, average annual production and turnover ratio of the population were 7.35 g m−2, 12.06 g m−2 and 1.64, respectively.  相似文献

In March of 1984 an immature Rhamida guatemalensis (Günther, 1864) lacking the right pectoral fin (Fig. 1) was captured in the Sangregado sector, Arenal Dam, Guanacaste, Costa Rica (10°28' N, 84°46'W) The body colouration and morphometric characteristics were as described for this species (Bussing 1966; Zúñga, 1980). X-ray examination revealed the absence of the radial bones and the fin rays of the right peoctoral fin. External examination of the tegument of this region showed no scars or evidence of accidental loss of the appendage, indicating that the fin had never developed.
Morphometric data from this abnormal specimen are: total length, 14.25 cm, standard length, 11.98cm; maximum height of body, 22.35 cm; maximum width of body, 2.40 cm, caudal peduncle width, 1.27 cm; head length, 3.00cm.  相似文献

Examination using light and transmission electron microscopy showed that each superficial neuromast of the New Zealand sole, Peltorhamphus novaezeelandiae , consists of a typical sensory epithelium lying between two epidermal lappets. The neuromasts occur both singly and in rows over the head and along and above the lateral-line on the body. As well as variation in the shape of the lappets and the size of the organs from different areas of the fish, there is a marked difference between their distribution on the left and right sides. It is suggested that the lapperts may improve the directional sensitivity of the neuromasts, or alternatively, that their function may be purely protective. The possibility is discussed that variation in the size and form of the organs reflects functional differences.  相似文献

(Stockh.) 61(3): 161–170. The structure and development of the olfactory organ in the garfish Belone belone (L.) were studied by light and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). The olfactory organ has the shape of an open groove with a protruding papilla. In embryos and early juveniles the groove is smooth and is provided with a continuous sensory epithelium. During ontogenesis the papilla develops and the composition of the epithelium is changed as areas of nonsensory epithelium appear and eventually separate the sensory epithelium into islets. In adults the sensory epithelium consists of supporting, basal, and two types of receptor cells, ciliated and microvillous. In juveniles also ciliated nonsensory cells are present. This difference can be correlated with differing locomotory habits of adults and juveniles. The receptor cilia show a 9 + 0 microtubular pattern while the nonsensory cilia have the general 9 + 2 pattern. Deviating dendritic endings were found and are considered an indication of ongoing cell dynamics.  相似文献

The peripheral blood cells of Acanthopagrus australis include erythrocytes, elongated and rounded thrombocytes, lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes. The ultrastructure of lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes is described. Type 1 cells with characteristic elongated, eosinophilic granules and type 2 cells with rounded, apparently labile granules are common in the gill filaments and do not increase or decrease significantly in abundance in ectoparasite-infested gill filaments. Extravascular neutrophils tend to be more evident in pathologic tissue. Lymphocytes and the macrophage-like type 3 cells are the most abundant infiltrating cells in pathologic gill tissue. Apart from ultrastructural and histochemical data, granule length and width are sufficient criteria to distinguish between the neutrophil, type 1, type 2 and type 3 cells.  相似文献

Underwater electro‐olfactogram (EOG) recordings involving 150 steroids and eight prostaglandins were used to determine which of these potential odorants are detected by the olfactory organ of an African cichlid, Haplochromis burtoni. In initial EOG tests at 10?9 M, H. burtoni did not respond to unconjugated steroids or prostaglandins, but did respond to 17 conjugated steroids, 11 of which (17β‐oestradiol‐17β‐glucuronide; 17β‐oestradiol‐3‐sulphate; 17β‐oestradiol‐3,17β‐disulphate; epiandrosteron‐3β‐sulphate; etiocholanolone‐3α‐glucuronide; testosterone‐17β‐sulphate; dehydroepiandrosterone‐3β‐sulphate; 5α‐pregnan‐3β‐ol‐20‐one‐3β‐sulphate; 5β‐pregnan‐3α,17‐diol‐20‐one‐3α‐glucuronide; 5β‐pregnan‐3α,17,21‐triol‐11,20‐dione‐3α‐glucuronide; pregnenolone‐3β‐sulphate) were selected for EOG concentration‐response, cross‐adaptation and binary mixture tests. The EOG detection thresholds ranged from 10?11 to 10?9 M in all but one instance (female threshold to pregnenolone‐3β‐sulphate; 10?8 M), and males and females exhibited only minor differences in EOG threshold or response magnitude. Results of EOG cross‐adaptation tests, which were supported by results of binary mixture tests, indicated that the response to the 11 steroid conjugates is mediated by five putative olfactory receptor mechanisms characterized by specificity for conjugate position and type: 3‐sulphate, 17‐sulphate, 3,17‐disulphate, 3‐glucuronide, 17‐glucuronide. Although there is no evidence that H. burtoni releases, or exhibits biological response to, the steroids shown to be detected in this study, the present results are suggestive of a complex pheromone system utilizing steroid conjugates.  相似文献

The growth of charr ( Salvelinus willughbii Günther ) caught in Windermere from 1941–1952 has been studied. Scales were used for determination of age and back-calculation of length for age. Autumn and spring spawners, males and females, and charr of normal and dwarf growth were treated separately. In fish of normal growth, the spring spawners were significantly smaller than the autumn spawners at ages 1 and 2 years, and significantly larger from age 4 years onwards. There was little difference in growth between males and females within the two spawning populations. Charr of lengths of less than 200 mm at age 4 years were considered to be dwarfs. Mean lengths at capture of male charr were: autumn spawners normal growth 272 mm, dwarf 218 mm; spring spawners normal growth 327 mm, dwarf 194 mm. The oldest recorded age was 8 years.  相似文献

The heart of Leiopotherapon unicolor comprises 0.135±0.005% of total body weight compared to the average teleost heart size of 0.081±0.002% body weight. The respiratory surface area of 569 mm2 g−1 is also much larger than that found in most freshwater fish. The exponent b in the equation Gill Area = a. body wtb was evaluated at 1.04, whereas the theoretical value for b is only 0.75. It is therefore evident that L. unicolor has an excessively large gill area and a large heart, which facilitate oxygen uptake in hypoxic environments.  相似文献

A recent study concerning the reproductive biology of the garfish (Belone belone, L. 1761) has been carried out in the eastern part of the Adriatic Sea along the Croatian coastline. Specimens of the fish (N = 3,393) were collected over a 6-year period (2003–2008). Their length varied between 20.8 and 75.4 cm (mean ± SD = 38.3 ± 7.94). Female garfish were dominant in larger length groups being most apparent during the resting phase of sexual cycle and in the peak of the spawning period, occurring in April and May. The sexual ratio of all specimens was m/f = 0.98. Males were prevalent in March—at the beginning of the highest spawning activities. Fifty percentage of the garfish population sexually matured at 28.5 cm of total length. Males and females reached their sexual maturity at 28.0 and 31.5 cm of total length, respectively. Spawning began in January peaking during March to May. According to their maturity stages, gonad weight and the gonadosomatic index, males began to spawn one month earlier (April) than females (May). The mean batch fecundity of garfish was 1,242.46 ± 843.64 of matured oocytes per ovary. Matured oocyte diameters ranged from 1.223 to 4.283 mm with the mean value of 2.269 ± 0.332 mm.  相似文献

A Hin dIII repetitive DNA family from Acrossocheilus paradoxus , a cyprinid fish endemic to Taiwan, was isolated and identified as a tandem arrangement of satellites in the genomic DNA. Cross-hybridization revealed similar patterns across fish genera and two families and suggested that this repetitive DNA is a conserved satellite sequence in fish. Forty-five monomeric repeat units of the repetitive DNA were cloned and sequenced, and found to be approximately 210 base pairs long and to have an average base composition of 52·8% A+T. Alignment analysis by examining 45 cloned repeat DNA strands from 22 individuals from nine different streams suggested that this repetitive DNA is highly polymorphic. The variability of sequences was mainly attributable to point mutations within the sequences. Genetic distances in all repeated DNAs ranged from 0 to 0·129 (average, 0·06). The high levels of genotype diversity and low levels of nucleotide diversity in satellites suggest population expansion of A. paradoxus .  相似文献
