1. Temporal fluctuations were measured in the concentrations of the trace metals cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in six insect taxa collected from the same sites in a temperate zone lake over a 14-month period. The consequences of temporal changes in insect contaminant concentrations for biomonitoring studies are assessed. 2. Significant temporal fluctuations in the concentrations of the three metals were measured in almost all of the insect taxa studied. In no case was there a greater than sixfold change in the concentration of a trace metal over the course of the year. The extent of the fluctuations was generally greater for CD, a non-essential metal, than for the essential micronutrients Cu or Zn. 3. Temporal fluctuations in CD concentrations appeared to follow a seasonal periodicity for most taxa. Minima were measured during the winter period in the megalopteran Sialis spp. and in the dipteran taxa Chaoborus punctipennis, Glyptotendipes sp., and Procladius spp., whereas a maximum was measured in the mayfly Hexagenia Hmbata during the same season. In general, temporal fluctuations in Cu and Zn concentrations were less seasonal in character than were those of Cd. 4. For some of the taxon—metal combinations studied, temporal fluctuations in metal concentrations could be ignored in biomonitoring studies, whereas in other cases a temporal window of minimum variability should be chosen for the collection of organisms from different sites.  相似文献

The burying depth of many bivalve molluscs on intertidal mudflats varies throughout the year and differs between places. Many factors are known to influence burying depth on a seasonal or spatial scale, with temperature and tidal regime probably being very important. Burying depth, body condition and gonadal development of Macoma balthica were followed throughout winter and spring in an experiment in which water temperature and immersion time were manipulated. Unexpectedly, relative water temperature, in contrast to the prediction, did not generally affect body condition or burying depth. This was probably a consequence of the exceptionally overall low water temperatures during the experimental winter. Differences in temperature did, however, result in different timing of spawning: M. balthica spawned earlier at higher spring temperatures. Longer immersion times led to higher body condition only late in spring, but led to deeper burying throughout almost the whole period. There was no effect of immersion time on the timing of spawning. We conclude that a longer immersion time leads to deeper burying, independent of body condition. We also conclude that burying behaviour of M. balthica is not determined by the moment of spawning. The surface deposit feeding speciesPygospio elegans andMacoma balthica are dominant members of many sandy bottom communities of northern boreal regions. The feeding mode of both species and the tube-building ofP. elegans are assumed to affect community structure by interactions with other species. The weight of tubes ofP. elegans varied between 2 and 13 g DW/100 cm2 at the two stations investigated and during the year, which is equivalent to 230–1500 cm of tubes per 100 cm2 of sediment surface. Sediment stability may be affected directly or indirectly by the amount of tubes present.M. balthica shows a linear relation between the maximum size of particles which can be inhaled and animal length. In Kiel Bay, particles>0.5 mm are out of the range of this species. In summer, the potential feeding area (PFA) of aP. elegans population at one station in Kiel Bay was 1.8 times the available surface area. The PFA of three different populations ofM. balthica in Kiel Bay exceeded the available surface area by factors of 2.6, 2.7, and 3.2. These findings indicate strong intra- and interspecific competition for food. Additionally, the feeding of both species may strongly affect the recruitment of benthic species via pelagic larvae. Seasonal dynamics of macrobenthos were studied at five stations located at depths of 10–60 min in the Far East State Marine Reserve (southern Peter the Great Bay) during 1984–1987. Sampling was conducted at stations once per season. Stable seasonal fluctuations of the population density and the biomass in basic taxonomic groups were found. As a rule, the quantitative parameters were augmented in spring and summer, and decreased in fall and winter. This was caused, first of all, by summer fluctuations of the number of small and short-lived species of polychaetes and bivalve molluscs. The amplitude of fluctuations decreased with increasing depth. Variation in the quantitative parameters was significant at the community level only at the most shallow-water stations. It was assumed that this phenomenon might be caused by the seasonal consumption of macrobenthos by bottom fish and by the periodicity of detritus supply to the bottom from the water column with a background of varying environmental temperature parameters and of mass settling of benthic larvae. The seasonal changes in parameters began and ceased earlier in 1986–1987 than 1984–1985, which was related to an appreciable decrease in water temperature in 1986. During the period of study, an increasing trend of parameters, apparently part of a long-term cycle, was recorded both for individual groups and for entire communities, and was the most appreciable at greater depths (47–60 m).  相似文献

The patterns of accumulation of Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Fe, Mn and Al in plant species which are members of the flora of soft-water central Ontario (Canada) lakes are presented. The allocation of each metal between roots and shoots varies with the metal and the overall level of metal enrichment of the site. There is interspecific variation in metal accumulation, but the greatest differences are between vascular plants and bryophytes, rather than within these groups. An index of overall metal enrichment of each site is developed using Cu and Ni sediment concentrations. In Eriocaulon septangulare With., plant metal concentrations were uncorrelated to environmental levels of the corresponding metal but did show trends relative to the index. High plant metal concentrations did not correspond to high index levels for Zn, Mn, Cd and Al. It is suggested that in highly metal-enriched environments competitive exclusions by more common metal ions may be occurring at uptake sites within the plant. As a result of this complexity, metal accumulation in E. septangulare has no predictive value as an indicator of environmental metal contamination.  相似文献

Because of methodological problems, macrobenthic studies usually neglect the juvenile stages of invertebrate communities, due to the fact that appearance of recruits in samples is only detected some weeks or even months after their true recruitment. During this period, the temporary meiobenthos undergoes high rates of mortality. From year to year, juvenile survival rate is thus responsible for temporal patterns observed in adult population densities.The results presented here relate to the population dynamics of the tellinid bivalve Macoma balthica (L.). A study of temporary meiobenthos was conducted over two consecutive years in an intertidal Macoma-community located at the mouth of the Gironde Estuary in southwest France. Sampling of juvenile stages required short intervals (2 weeks) between successive samplings and a fine sieving mesh size (63 µm). Other population parameters, such as temporal patterns in density, reproductive cycle, and individual growth, were recorded.Recruitment processes showed a year-to-year variability, with regard to settlement density, settlement period, and survival rate. In 1983, recruitment was moderate and protracted over several months. Only one main recruitment period was detected in 1984, resulting in a high juvenile density. In a previous study (1977), by contrast, recruitment was almost non-existent.This variability is discussed as a function of climatic and sedimentological conditions which prevailed in the estuary throughout the study period. However, none of these physical factors appeared to underlie the recruitment fluctuation in Macoma balthica. It is suggested that biological interactions are of prime importance in regulating population densities in this community.  相似文献

Water and intertidal sediment samples were collected from 28 stations along the Thames Estuary, from the tidal limit to the outer estuary. Surveys were conducted in 1997, 1999 and 2001 to assess spatial distributions and short-term variability. Highest concentrations of trace metals in water coincided with high turbidity in the mid-estuarine region, although the particle-associated fraction varied from 22% (As) to 95% (Pb). Theoretical dilution line (TDL) plots showed that dissolved metals were largely derived from a combination of diffuse (sediment desorption) and localised point sources (outfalls, industry). Dissolved Cu and Zn both exceeded environmental quality standard (EQS) levels during the survey period. The majority of sediment metals showed common distributional patterns, with increasing concentrations upstream. This increase was greatest for pollutant metals: Ag, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn. Partial extraction of sediment metals with 1 M HCl showed that >50% of Ag, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn were potentially bioavailable and that the proportion of bioavailable sediment metals also increased upstream. The majority of sediment metal concentrations exceeded Interim Sediment Quality Guideline threshold effects levels (TELs) over much of the estuary. Sediment concentrations of Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn also exceeded probable effects levels (PELs) at many estuarine sites. Despite improvements in recent years, the Thames Estuary remains chronically contaminated with a range of metals.  相似文献

The distribution of the macrobenthic infaunal community within the upper 25 cm of the sediment was studied at 16 stations in the lower Chesapeake Bay. Stations were located from the tidal freshwater to the polyhaline zone of major tributaries (James, York and Rappahannock Rivers) and in the polyhaline portion of the lower bay mainstem. Profiles for total number of individuals, total ash-free dry weight biomass and species encountered with depth were calculated. Except for the deep dwelling bivalve, Macoma balthica, tributary macrobenthic communities had a shallow depth distribution compared to the mainstem sites which were found in generally coarser sediments in the higher salinity region of the estuary.  相似文献

This study comprises a comparative taphonomic analysis of three endobenthic bivalves (Mya arenaria, Cerastoderma edule, and Macoma balthica) derived from a mass accumulation of mainly vertically packed shells from the “Wurster Watt” in Lower Saxony’s Wadden Sea, German Bight. Bulk samples from two transects were analyzed with respect to taxonomic composition, left/right valve presence, counts and weight percentages of taxa, and size-frequency distributions. Taphonomic features including abrasion, fragmentation, encrustation and bioerosion were subjected to a semi-quantitative analysis. Taphonomic results show significant differences with respect to bivalve taxa as well as between transects. Mya arenaria, a large endobenthic bivalve, shows the greatest amount of fragmentation and is often encrusted by balanids and bryozoans. The smaller and more robust Cerastoderma edule has the greatest values for bioerosion especially by the polychaete Polydora ciliata. Macoma balthica, which has the thinnest valves, shows the highest values for abrasion, but low values for the rest of the measured taphonomic features. Taphonomic differences between the taxa, samples and transects are related to (1) the origin of the bivalves (from living populations or exposed colonization horizons), (2) the different size and morphology of the valves (themselves related to mode of life), (3) the taphonomic trajectories of the different bivalves, as well as (4) the varying depositional environment of the two transects.  相似文献

Rock Sandpipers Calidris ptilocnemis have the most northerly non‐breeding distribution of any shorebird in the Pacific Basin (upper Cook Inlet, Alaska; 61°N, 151°W). In terms of freezing temperatures, persistent winds and pervasive ice, this site is the harshest used by shorebirds during winter. We integrated physiological, metabolic, behavioural and environmental aspects of the non‐breeding ecology of Rock Sandpipers at the northern extent of their range to determine the relative importance of these factors in facilitating their unique non‐breeding ecology. Not surprisingly, estimated daily energetic demands were greatest during January, the coldest period of winter. These estimates were greatest for foraging birds, and exceeded basal metabolic rates by a factor of 6.5, a scope of increase that approaches the maximum sustained rate of energetic output by shorebirds during periods of migration, but far exceeds these periods in duration. We assessed the quality of their primary prey, the bivalve Macoma balthica, to determine the daily foraging duration required by Rock Sandpipers to satisfy such energetic demands. Based on size‐specific estimates of M. balthica quality, Rock Sandpipers require over 13 h/day of foraging time in upper Cook Inlet in January, even when feeding on the highest quality prey. This range approaches the average daily duration of mudflat availability in this region (c. 18 h), a maximum value that annually decreases due to the accumulation of shore‐fast ice. Rock Sandpipers are likely to maximize access to foraging sites by following the exposure of ice‐free mudflats across the upper Cook Inlet region and by selecting smaller, higher quality M. balthica to minimize foraging times. Ultimately, this unusual non‐breeding ecology relies on the high quality of their prey resources. Compared with other sites across their range, M. balthica from upper Cook Inlet have relatively light shells, potentially the result of the region's depauperate invertebrate predator community. Given the delicate balance between environmental and prey conditions that currently make Cook Inlet a viable wintering area for Rock Sandpipers, small variations in these variables may affect the suitability of the site in the future.  相似文献

The seasonal variability of the intracellular free amino acid (FAA) concentration was studied in 5 Macoma balthica populations and 7 Mytilus spp. populations along their European distribution. Because of the well known physiological role of FAA as organic osmolytes for salinity induced cell volume regulation in marine osmoconformers, FAA variations were compared in bivalve populations that were exposed to high vs. low intraannual salinity fluctuations. In general, seasonal FAA variations were more pronounced in M. balthica than in Mytilus spp. In both bivalve taxa from different locations in the Baltic Sea, highest FAA concentrations were found in autumn and winter and low FAA concentrations were measured in summer. Seasonal patterns were less pronounced in both taxa at locations with constant salinity conditions. In contrast to Baltic Sea populations, Atlantic and Mediterranean bivalves showed high FAA concentrations in summer and low values in winter, regardless of seasonal salinity fluctuations. Significant seasonal FAA variations at locations with constant salinity conditions showed that salinity appeared not to be the main factor in determining FAA concentrations. The seasonal patterns of the main FAA pool components, i.e. alanine, glycine and taurine, are discussed in the context of seasonal variations in environmental factors (salinity, temperature) and physiological state (glycogen content, reproductive stage).  相似文献

富集重金属的枯落物分解可能提高重金属暴露率,增加人体接触健康风险。为了解南方城市土壤重金属在森林生态系统中的分布及流转情况,通过调查研究了佛山市8个典型森林群落土壤及枯落物重金属含量,分析了各森林群落枯落物对不同重金属的富集效应及重金属随枯落物回归土壤流通量。结果表明:1)城市森林各土壤重金属含量在不同典型群落间差异显著(P<0.05),差异最大为Pb、Cr、Zn,As、Cu、Ni次之,Hg、Cd最小;土层深度(0—20,20—40,40—60 cm)对重金属含量影响显著(P<0.05),差异最大为Cd、Hg,其次为As、Cu,最小为Zn、Ni、Pb、Cr。整体上,Cd、Hg、As、Pb、Zn在0—20 cm最高,表层富集特征明显,Cr和Ni在40—60 cm最高。2)8个森林群落中阴香—白楸—醉香含笑群落(CMMC)枯落物对8种重金属的综合富集系数(TBCF,66.76)最高,其中以Cd的富集效果最突出,富集系数为44.45,且对Pb、Cu、Zn也相对富集;最低的为黧蒴锥—香椿—樟树群落(CTCC),综合富集系数(TBCF)为8.09,仅对Cd、Cr、Cu相对富集,对其余...  相似文献

Two Jordanian sandy beaches, one at the northern end and the other at the southern end near the Saudi-Jordanian border, were examined during November 1984 to October 1985. Sediments of the South station were made of coarser sand than the North station. In general, low organic carbon and calcium carbonate levels were found at both stations. A total of 15839 animals representing 45 taxa were collected from both stations. Major differences in community structure were found between the two stations. An average density of 7981/m2, 39 taxa. an average diversity value of 1.78 and an evenness of 0.37 were characteristic of the South station. Lower number of taxa (39) and density (818/m2) were found on the North station. However, the average diversity (3.18) and evenness (0.74) were higher. Using the biological index value of MCCLOSKEY (1970), the archiannelid Saccocirrus sp. was the most dominant species at the South station and the bivalve Tellina perna at the North station.  相似文献

The relationship between sediment trace metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) and bioaccumulation in tissue of macrobenthos (Parvilucina tenuisculpta, Tellina spp., Macoma spp., Pectinaria californiensis, Nephtys spp., Glycera spp., Metasychis sp., Euphilomedes spp., and Ampelisca spp.) was described from 1975 to 1985 on the San Pedro Shelf, California. Results indicated that: 1) sediment trace metals were elevated at an ocean outfall station; 2) tissue trace metals were never statistically higher at the outfall compared to a reference station except for Zn in Macoma spp.; 3) there were a few statistically significant associations (r) between tissue and sediment metals, but no consistent trends emerged; 4) peak tissue metal concentrations occurred more frequently in the winter than in the summer.  相似文献

To evaluate the effects of a deposit-feeding bivalve on meiobenthic assemblage structure in muddy habitats, a laboratory experiment was performed at the Askö Laboratory in the northwestern Baltic proper. Microcosms, surface area 104 cm2, containing a c. 7-cm thick layer of sieved (0.5 mm) sublittoral mud were established in June 1990. Two months later the tellinid bivalve Macoma balthica was added in quantities varying from 0 to 40 individuals per microcosm. After 5 months the effects of the bivalves on the meiofauna were surprisingly small. The density of harpacticoid copepods was lowest (P <0.05) in microcosms containing a high density of M. balthica. It is suggested that competition for food resources was responsible for this pattern. For all other meiofaunal groups, including nematodes which were the most abundant taxon (99%), no significant differences (P>0.05) were observed among treatments. The assemblage structure of the nematodes was similar between treatments. The vertical distribution of both major taxa and nematode species appeared to be unaffected by the presence of the bivalve.  相似文献

基于2009—2018年亚洲季风区7个大气本底站[印度尼西亚Bukit Kototabang(BKT)站、中国鹿林(LLN)站和瓦里关(WLG)站、日本Ryori(RYO)站和Yonagunijima(YON)站、韩国Tae-ahn Peninsula(TAP)站、蒙古Ulaan Uul(UUM)站]地面观测资料,利用谐波模型拟合和最大信息非参数探索方法,对亚洲季风区大气CH4浓度时空变化特征及影响因素进行分析。结果表明: 亚洲季风区大气CH4浓度范围在1853.04~1935.61 nmol·mol-1,高于同期美国夏威夷Mauna Loa(MLO)站观测值(1838.33 nmol·mol-1),总体呈现由北向南依次递减的纬向分布特征,两个高值中心为韩国TAP站(1935.61 nmol·mol-1)和日本RYO站(1907.19 nmol·mol-1)。大气CH4浓度平均季振幅最大为日本YON站(108.20 nmol·mol-1),最小为中国WLG站(29.48 nmol·mol-1),同时韩国TAP(4.49 nmol·mol-1·a-1)站表现出更高的季振幅变化速率;除中国WLG站和韩国TAP站外,其他本底站均呈现夏低冬高的季节循环特征;从长期变化上看,中国LLN站(7.68 nmol·mol-1·a-1)和WLG站(7.56 nmol·mol-1·a-1)大气CH4浓度增长趋势最明显。相对于风速而言,气温和降水量对亚洲季风区大气CH4浓度的影响程度更高,两个气象因子与大气CH4浓度之间均呈现显著负相关;局地排放对部分站点大气CH4浓度具有显著正向效应。  相似文献

Trace metal/metalloid (As, Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn) bioaccumulation was measured over a period of ten years (1985–1995) in five species of epibenthic macroinvertebrates (EMI) from the San Pedro Shelf, California. Four of the species are numerical dominants in the Southern California Bight (SCB) and two species are commercially harvested. Among three echinoderms, a predatory sea star yielded highest tissue concentrations compared to a sea cucumber and a sea urchin, and concentrations measured in a mantid shrimp exceeded those from a prawn. Comparison of trace metal bioaccumulation from the study area, including the ocean outfall, and elsewhere indicated that bioaccumulation in local EMI was generally low. Measurements from an outfall station and two reference stations were used to evaluate the spatial and temporal relationship between trace metal bioaccumulation and the wastewater discharge. It was concluded that there was no spatial or temporal relationship between EMI trace metal bioaccumulation and the discharge.  相似文献

We conducted a survey to provide knowledge on mechanisms controlling spatial and temporal variability of macrobenthos in an intertidal Wadden Sea area partly covered by invasive Spartina anglica. Benthic macrofauna was collected seasonally at seven stations along a transect covering non-vegetated mudflat and vegetated marsh areas. Shannon diversity index was consistently higher for macrobenthos in the open mudflat compared to the marsh area. Infaunal species, like Arenicola marina, Tubificoides benedeni and Macoma balthica, were more abundant in the mudflat than the marsh, while the opposite was evident for epifaunal species, like Hydrobia ulvae and Littorina littorea. The infaunal crustacean, Corophium volutator, on the other hand, appeared particularly attracted to the mudflat–marsh boundary. The biomass of below-ground plant materials and macrodetritus was positively correlated with the total macrofaunal abundance, while the biomass of dead below-ground plant materials alone showed a significant negative correlation with infaunal abundance. Total macrofaunal abundance was highest during summer in the mudflat, while no seasonal pattern was evident in the marsh. The negative influence of S. anglica invasions on infaunal abundance may have serious implications for higher trophic levels, such as waterbirds, that forage in Wadden Sea areas and thus for the overall biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Diatom Succession and Interaction in Littoral Periphyton and Plankton   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0  
Periphyton and plankton samples were collected at four littoral stations in a relatively shallow, eutrophic lake (Elk Lake, B.C., Canada) over a six month period from August 1967 to January 1968. The most abundant planktonic diatoms demonstrated a pattern of seasonal succession typical of temperate lakes, and all were present in the periphyton. This pattern was identical at all stations:Fragilaria crotonensis was dominant from August to October,Asterionella formosa in November and December, andMelosira italica (plusM. varians) in January.F. virescens, although never dominant, peaked in October. Periphyton communities were dominated byAchnanthes minutissima, Cocconeis placentula, F. crolonensis andF. virescens. Considerable station variation in successional patterns occurred over different exposure periods; station differences were least in those samples immersed for monthly intervals, and greatest in those immersed for a cumulative four-month period. Interaction between the phytoplankton and periphyton was illustrated by the occurrence of species common to both habitats. A decrease in cell numbers and percent abundance of these species in planktonic populations coincided with their increase in the periphyton, a relationship which appeared dependent on the breakdown of thermal stratification in November. For example, following turnover,F. crotonensis andA. formosa settled out of the plankton and correspondingly increased in percent abundance in the periphyton. This interdependence was less evident in the four-month samples, whereA. minutissima andC. placentula dominated throughout the entire period and appeared to out-compete the more typical planktonic components for diminishing substrate area. Species interaction or competition was accentuated as exposure duration and periphyton total cell standing crops increased and species diversity decreased, and appeared to account in part, for station differences in successional patterns.  相似文献
