The pretarsus of Phidippus audax (Hentz) consists of two claws flexibly articulated to a central claw lever which is flanked on either side by a curved plate of tenent setae. The claw apparatus allows for retraction of the claws by means of a dorsal cuticular cable of the pretarsal levator, while extension involves the pull of the pretarsal depressor on a ventral cable attached to the claw lever. A series of slit sensilla are strategically situated on either side of this lever. The anterior and posterior claws of the pretarsus differ in the number and spacing of their constituent teeth. The claw tufts are composed of specialized setae which account for the mechanical traction of the foot-pads. Whorled and filamentous setae of the distal tarsus are associated with the pretarsus. Comparable structures are found on other salticids.  相似文献

Based on analyses with cryo‐scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the present study reports on the morphology and ultrastructure of the attachment structures of the green stinkbug Nezara viridula L. (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), a cosmopolitan pest of different crops in most areas of the world. In addition, the presence and distribution of large proportions of the elastic protein resilin in these structures was revealed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The attachment structures of each leg comprise two sclerotised claws, a pair of smooth flexible pulvilli and a hairy adhesive pad located at the ventral side of the basitarsus. No sexual dimorphism is evident. Contact areas of resting individuals on a smooth surface show that N. viridula creates contact to the substrate with the ventral surface of (a) the distal portions of the pulvilli, (b) the setae of the hairy adhesive pad, (c) the two paraempodia representing mechanosensory setae, and (d) the tips of the claws. Each pulvillus is a sac‐like structure formed by complex cuticular layers that vary in their structure and resilin content. The dorsal side consists of sclerotised chitinous material, while the ventral cuticle consists mainly of resilin and shows a very thin epicuticle and a thick exocuticle. The setae of the hairy adhesive pad are pointed and socketed. They exhibit a pronounced longitudinal gradient in the material composition, with large proportions of resilin being present in the setal tips. In most of these setae, especially in those of the distal‐most part of the pad, also a transverse gradient in the material composition is visible.  相似文献

All carnivorans retract and protract their claws. In felids and some viverrids the claws of digits II through V of both the manus and pes have a larger arc of rotation than those of other carnivorans; the claws retract to the lateral side of the middle phalanx rather than onto its dorsal surface as in most other carnivorans. This condition should be termed hyper-retraction. Morphological features of the middle and distal (ungual) phalanges that have been purported to be necessary for hyper-retraction in felids vary considerably among digits within the manus and pes. These features include the lateral projection of the distal head and the asymmetry of the shaft of the middle phalanx, and the oblique orientation of the articular surface on the distal phalanx. None of these features is necessary in every instance for hyperretraction, and some of the variation in these features is associated instead with protraction. Differences among digits in the orientation of the articular surface on the distal phalanx are associated with differences in the degree to which the claws must move laterally to rotate from the protracted to the retracted position. Differences in the orientation of the distal head on the middle phalanx are associated with the spreading of the claws during protraction. The manual claws are hook-shaped, whereas the pedal claws are more blade-like; this morphological difference is associated with differences in function between the manus and pes. In the manus the medial claws have a larger radius of curvature and a smaller angle of arc as compared to the more lateral claws; in the pes, the claws on digits III and IV have larger radii of curvature and smaller angles of arc. Digit I of the manus lacks the hyper-retraction mechanism; nonetheless, this digit shares many of the attributes that are associated with this mechanism. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Osmotic and ionic regulation in the Crustacea is mostly accomplished by the multifunctional gills, together with the excretory organs. In addition to their role in gas exchange, the gills constitute organs of active, transepithelial, ion transport, an activity of major importance that underlies many essential physiological functions like osmoregulation, calcium homeostasis, ammonium excretion and extracellular pH regulation. This review focuses on structure-function relationships in crustacean gills and excretory effectors, from the organ to molecular levels of organization. We address the diversity of structural architectures encountered in different crustacean gill types, and in constituent cell types, before examining the physiological mechanisms of Na(+), Cl(-), Ca(2+) and NH(4)(+) transport, and of acid-base equivalents, based on findings obtained over the last two decades employing advanced techniques. The antennal and maxillary glands constitute the principal crustacean excretory organs, which have received less attention in functional studies. We examine the diversity present in antennal and maxillary gland architecture, highlighting the structural similarities between both organ types, and we analyze the functions ascribed to each glandular segment. Emphasis is given to volume and osmoregulatory functions, capacity to produce dilute urine in freshwater crustaceans, and the effect of acclimation salinity on urine volume and composition. The microanatomy and diversity of function ascribed to gills and excretory organs are appraised from an evolutionary perspective, and suggestions made as to future avenues of investigation that may elucidate evolutionary and adaptive trends underpinning the invasion and exploitation of novel habitats.  相似文献

Two new coexisting species of crustacean copepods (Poecilostomatoida) belonging to the echinoid-specific genera Mecomerinx Humes, 1977 (Pseudanthessiidae) and Clavisodalis Humes, 1970 (Taeniacanthidae) found associated with the venomous flower urchin Toxopneustes pileolus (Lamarck) (Echinodermata: Echinoidea: Toxopneustidae) in the South China Sea (Vietnam) are described. The diagnostic features of Mecomerinx ohtsukai n. sp. are: (i) three setae and one aesthetasc on the first segment of antennules; (ii) relatively long caudal ramus; (iii) elongated terminal segment of the antenna; and (iv) two claws on the terminal segment of antenna slightly unequal in length. The taeniacanthid copepod Clavisodalis toxopneusti n. sp. is distinguished from all seven known congeners by having two-segmented endopod of the legs 2–4 and four setae on the distal endopodal segment of the leg 1. This is the first report on copepods associated with echinoids of the genus Toxopneustes Agassiz and the first finding of Mecomerinx as well as taeniacanthid copepods in the South China Sea associated with echinoids.  相似文献

The paired thoracic chelipeds or claws of adult snapping shrimp, Alpheus heterochelis, are bilaterally asymmetric, consisting of an enlarged and elaborate, sound-producing major (snapper) claw and a much smaller minor (pincer) claw. These paired claws vary in the composition of their external sensilla. Both possess long serrulate and simple short setae but the snapper also have plumose setae and long serrulate setae on the plunger. The pincers differ in having short serrulate setae and, in males alone, a prominent fringe of plumoserrate setae. During regeneration of each claw type, these setal structures are gradually added over three molts to reach the pristine condition. The long serrulate and simple short setae appear first, being seen in intermolt limb buds and commonly in both claws. Setae exclusive to each claw, i.e., plumoserrate and short serrulate in the pincer and plumose and long serrulate on the plunger in the snapper, appear sparsely in either the regenerated 1st or 2nd postmolt claw, they proliferate in the subsequent 2nd or 3rd postmolt claw. Transformation of the pincer claw to the snapper type begins in the 1st postmolt stage with the loss of pincer setae and addition of snapper setae and is completed by the 3rd postmolt stage. Since changes in composition of the external sensilla are restricted to postmolt stages, the underlying hypodermis is presumably being remodeled during proecdysis.  相似文献

The crustacean cuticle has numerous projections and some of these projections, the setae, have important mechanical as well as sensory functions. The setae display a wide diversity in their external morphology, which has led to great problems separating setae from other projections in the cuticle and problems in making a consistent classification system. Here, the cuticular projections on the mouthparts of seven species of decapods are examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. A new definition is given: a seta is an elongate projection with a more or less circular base and a continuous lumen; the lumen has a semicircular arrangement of sheath cells basally. From the details of the external morphology the mouthpart setae are divided into seven types: pappose, plumose, serrulate, serrate, papposerrate, simple and cuspidate setae, which are suggested to reflect mechanical functions and not evolutionary history. The external anatomy of the ovipositor has generally been overlooked as a source of informative characters in systematic studies of laniatorean harvestmen. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy to examine the ovipositors of nine species representing the families Manaosbiidae (five species) and Nomoclastidae (four species). Similar to the ovipositor morphology of many gonyleptoidean families, the distal tips of the ovipositors of these harvestmen have four external lobes, with the margins most commonly adorned with 10 large peripheral setae. In manaosbiid and nomoclastid species, these peripheral setae have undivided bases, striated shafts and undivided distal tips. There are typically three setae on each anterior lobe and two setae on each posterior lobe. The medial setae on both anterior and posterior lobes insert into sockets that are slightly more dorsal. We observed small, surface denticles, usually associated with a pore, on the external surface of the lobes. There was interspecific and intraspecific variation in the number and shape of these surface denticles. The association of pores with denticles on the ovipositor appears to be a feature common to not only both families but is also a trait that has not been observed on ovipositors in other families of laniatorean harvestmen.  相似文献

Abstract. Osmotic stress associated with the freshwater environment and desiccation stress associated with the terrestrial environment may have a shortening effect on the length of the innervation of crustacean aesthetascs. Physical stress of the littoral environment may have a similar effect on the length of the cuticular portion of aesthetascs. The aesthetascs of crustaceans that inhabit these environments share a similar ultrastructural feature, which may help animals cope with these environmental stresses. This ultrastructural feature, the position of the basal bodies proximal to the lumen of the aesthetasc, is absent from the aesthetascs of crustaceans that occur in the typical marine environment. Interestingly, the ultrastructural feature associated with these stressful habitats is present in the peduncular aesthetascs of the remipede Speleonectes tanumekes , even though the environmental stresses that may invoke the reduction of aesthetascs are absent in the marine-cave environment where this animal occurs. The importance of the sensitivity of aesthetascs for survival in this lightless environment may result in a selective pressure that favors basal bodies to be positioned proximal to the lumen of the aesthetasc.  相似文献

Although the onychophoran jaw blades are believed to be derivatives of foot claws, serial homology of these structures has not been demonstrated. To shed light on the evolutionary origin of the onychophoran jaws, we searched for morphological landmarks and compared the internal and external anatomy of jaws and distal leg portions in representatives of the two major onychophoran subgroups, the Peripatidae and Peripatopsidae. Our data revealed hitherto unknown structures associated with the onychophoran limbs, such as a soft diastemal membrane separating the anterior and posterior portions of the inner jaw blade (present only in Peripatidae), apodemes associated with feet, an eversible dorsal sac at the basis of each foot claw, and a specific arrangement of musculature associated with the sclerotised claws, jaws and their apodemes. Specific correspondences in structure and position of apodemes support serial homology of claws and jaws, suggesting that the onychophoran jaw evolved from the distal portion rather than the entire limb in the last common ancestor of Onychophora. The epidermis of different scales in the lizard Anolis carolinensis expresses specific keratin-associated beta-proteins (beta-keratins). In order to localize the sites of accumulation of different beta-proteins, we have utilized antibodies directed against representative members of the main families of beta-proteins, the glycine-rich (HgG5), glycine-cysteine rich (HgGC3), glycine-cysteine medium-rich (HgGC10), and cysteine-rich (HgC1) beta-proteins. Immunoblotting and immunocytochemical controls confirm the specificity of the antibodies made against these proteins. Light and ultrastructural immunocytochemistry shows that the glycine-rich protein HgG5 is present in beta-layers of different body scales but is scarce in the oberhautchen and claws, and is absent in alpha-layers and adhesive setae. The cysteine-glycine-rich protein HgGC3 is low to absent in the oberhautchen, beta-layer, and mesos-layer but increases in alpha-layers. This beta-protein is low in claws where it is likely associated with the hard alpha-keratins previously studied in this lizard. The glycine-cysteine medium-rich HgGC10 protein is low in the beta-layer, higher in alpha-layers, and in the oberhautchen. This protein forms a major component of setal proteins including those of the adhesive spatula that allow this lizard to stick on vertical surfaces. HgC1 is poorly localized in most epidermis analyzed including adhesive setae and claws and appears as a minor component of the alpha-layers. In conclusion, the present study suggests that beta- and alpha-layers of lizard epidermis represent regions with different accumulation of glycine-rich proteins (mainly for mechanical resistance and hydrophobicity in the beta-layer) or cysteine-glycine-rich proteins (for both resistance and elasticity in both alpha- and beta-layers).  相似文献

The distal parts of the legs of Sceliphron caementarium (Sphecidae) and Formica rufa (Formicidae) are documented and discussed with respect to phylogenetic and functional aspects. The prolegs of Hymenoptera offer an array of evolutionary novelties, mainly linked with two functional syndromes, walking efficiently on different substrates and cleaning the body surface. The protibial-probasitarsomeral cleaning device is almost always well-developed. A complex evolutionary innovation is a triple set of tarsal and pretarsal attachment devices, including tarsal plantulae, probasitarsomeral spatulate setae, and an arolium with an internal spring-like arcus, a dorsal manubrium, and a ventral planta. The probasitarsal adhesive sole and a complex arolium are almost always preserved, whereas the plantulae are often missing. Sceliphron has retained most hymenopteran ground plan features of the legs, and also Formica, even though the adhesive apparatus of Formicidae shows some modifications, likely linked to ground-oriented habits of most ants. Plantulae are always absent in extant ants, and the arolium is often reduced in size, and sometimes vestigial. The arolium contains resilin in both examined species. Additionally, resilin enriched regions are also present in the antenna cleaners of both species, although they differ in which of the involved structures is more flexible, the calcar in Sceliphron and the basitarsal comb in Formica. Functionally, the hymenopteran distal leg combines (a) interlocking mechanisms (claws, spine-like setae) and (b) adhesion mechanisms (plantulae, arolium). On rough substrate, claws and spine-like setae interlock with asperities and secure a firm grip, whereas the unfolding arolium generates adhesive contact on smooth surfaces. Differences of the folded arolium of Sceliphron and Formica probably correlate with differences in the mechanism of folding/unfolding.  相似文献

Platypus koryoensis is a minute ambrosia beetle found in forests. It can cause significant economic damage to oak trees. Recently in Korea, it has been reported as a major pest of oak trees, because it causes sooty mold of oak by introducing the pathogenic fungus Raffaelea sp. In this paper, we demonstrate the fine structural aspects of the external body of the ambrosia beetle using field emission scanning electron microscopy, as a part of basic research into this pest so that strategies for its control might be developed. This beetle has a sensory system well developed to respond to both visual and chemical stimuli. Both sexes have a pair of faceted compound eyes and a pair of knobbed antennae, but simple eyes are absent. The mouthparts on its distinct snouts are effective devices for penetration and for boring holes. The mouthparts consist of the labrum, a pair of mandibles, a pair of maxillae and the labium. Both the maxillary and the labial palpi have the function of directing the food to the mouth and holding it while the mandibles chew the food. The distal ends of these palpi are flattened and have shovel‐like setae. The thorax has a particularly hard exoskeleton and hard elytra, including powerful muscles that operate both the wings and the legs. The legs are multi‐segmented and have a strong femur and tibia, including one pair of claws on the end of each tarsal segment. Characteristically, both male and female beetles have mycangial cavities for storing spores and other microorganisms, but only females have three pairs of large depressions on their dorsal thorax.  相似文献

Pedipalps are the most versatile appendages of arachnids. They can be equipped with spines (Amblypygi), chelae (Scorpiones), or adhesive pads (Solifugae), all of which are modifications to grasp and handle fast‐moving prey. Harvestmen (Opiliones) show a high diversity of pedipalpal morphologies. Some are obviously related to prey capture, like the enlargement and heavy spination of Laniatores pedipalps. Many Dyspnoi, by contrast, exhibit thin, thread‐like pedipalps that are covered with complex glandular setae (clavate setae). These extrude viscoelastic glue that is used to immobilize prey items. Comparable setae (plumose setae) have previously been found in representatives of both Eupnoi and Dyspnoi, yet comprehensive data on their distribution are lacking. This study examined the distribution and ultrastructure of glandular setae in harvestmen and related them to pedipalpal morphology. Pedipalpal and setal characters were analysed in a phylogenetic framework. We found that glandular setae are synapomorphic for and widespread in the Palpatores clade (Eupnoi plus Dyspnoi). Their occurrence correlates with pedipalp morphology and feeding habit. Remnants of arthropod cuticular structures or secretions, frequently found attached to glandular setae, and behavioural observations, underlined the importance of the setae for capturing and securing prey. We hypothesize that glandular setae evolved as an adaptation to capture small and agile prey, which are hard to catch with a capture basket. Details of ultrastructure indicate that the setae are derived sensilla chaetica, with both a secretory and sensory function. Derived ultrastructural characters of the glandular setae, such as slit‐like channel openings and a globular arrangement of the microtrichia, may increase their effectiveness. The functional role of further pedipalpal modifications, such as apophyses, stalked and hyperbendable joints, and curved segments, as well as sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic polymorphism, are discussed. Some implications of the results obtained for the taxonomic treatment of Phalangiidae are also discussed. These results shed new light on the biology and evolutionary history of this fascinating group of arthropods.  相似文献

In crustaceans, grooming behaviors decrease fouling by removing debris from the exoskeleton and body structures; these grooming behaviors improve respiration, sensory reception, movement, and reproduction. Setal morphologies of the following grooming appendages in the decapod crustacean spider crab Libinia dubia are examined including the first pereiopod (cheliped), first, second, and third maxillipeds (mouthparts), and first, second, and third epipods (internal extensions of the maxillipeds). The objective of this study was to describe setal morphologies of these grooming appendages and to elucidate possible functions and efficiencies of setal structures. Spider crabs are hypothesized to have elaborate setal morphologies, mainly for cleaning specialized decorating setae as well as for cleaning inside the gill chamber, which has a higher likelihood of becoming fouled compared to other decapods such as shrimps. Fourteen setal types are documented and included several varieties of serrate and pappose setae as well as simple setae, cuspidate setae, papposerrate setae, and canoe setae. Maxillipodal epipods in the gill chamber are free of fouling, suggesting the setation on the third maxilliped protopod has an efficient functional morphology in removing debris before water enters the gill chamber. Serrate setae may function for detangling and separating structures whereas pappose setae may function for fine detailed grooming. The cheliped is the only grooming appendage that can reach decorating setae and it contains only pappose setae; thus decorating setae is not likely groomed in a manner that would greatly decrease fouling. We investigated the morphology of adult and juvenile stages of females and males of Bosmina longispina Leydig from a North Icelandic population. There are additional setae near the basis of the second antenna and between its branches in adult males, not described in Bosmina, but known from other Anomopoda. New features of female morphology are also found. The development of the first limb and postabdomen of the male is described in detail. Tricorythodes molinerii sp. n. is described and illustrated based on nymphs from southeastern Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from other species of Tricorythodes Ulmer by the following characters: 1) genal projection present; 2) maxillary palp bi-segmented, with short apical seta; 3) pronotum with well developed anterolateral projection; 4) dorsum of fore femora with a transverse row of setae; 5) tarsal claws without marginal denticles and with one submarginal denticle on each side; 6) operculate gills triangular, shaded with black, and with whitish mark in subbasal zone; and 7) very large size.  相似文献

Remipedia are enigmatic crustaceans of uncertain phylogenetic position with the general consensus that they are crucial for understanding the crustacean/arthropod evolution. It has been demonstrated previously that the features of the ovary organization and subcellular aspects of oogenesis are useful in resolving phylogenetic relationships in arthropods such as hexapods and onychophorans. The structure of the female gonads in Remipedia remains largely unknown; therefore, we examined the gross morphology and ultrastructural details of the ovary in a remipede, Godzilliognomus frondosus, with special emphasis on characters relevant to phylogenetic reconstructions. The ovaries of G. frondosus are located in the anterior part of the body and are composed of a single anterior proliferative zone (the germarium) and paired ovarian tubes (the vitellarium). The oocytes undergo subsequent stages of development within the lumen of the ovarian tubes, hence the remipede ovaries can be classified as endogenous. During oogenesis, each oocyte is enveloped by a set of characteristic somatic follicular cells, which results in the formation of distinct ovarian follicles. Here, we demonstrate that Remipedia share significant similarities in the ovary organization with Cephalocarida, including the anterior location of the ovary, the anterior-most position of the germarium and the endogenous type of oocyte development. Phylogenetic implications of our findings are discussed.  相似文献

A new species of Apobaetis is described based on nymphs and male imago, and the male imago of A. fiuzai. Specimens were collected in the state of Amazonas, northern region of Brazil. Apobaetis hamadae sp. n. can be easily distinguished from the other congeners by the following combination of characteristics: male imago: (1) abdominal colour pattern; (2) area between forceps not excavated medially. Nymphs: (1) distal margin of labrum with shallow medial emargination and with four to five spatulated setae near midline; (2) maxillary palp 1.4× longer than galea-lacinia; (3) tarsal claws 1.2× times longer than tarsus. The male imago of A. fiuzai can be easily distinguished by the following characteristics: (1) abdominal colour pattern; (2) area between segments I of forceps with a deep V emargination.  相似文献
