The physiological parameters of heterothermy (e.g. minimum body temperature and oxygen consumption, percentage metabolic reduction, and bout length) were measured in two species of Elephantulus elephant shrews (Elephantulus myurus and Elephantulus rozeti; Macroscelidea) as a function of ambient temperature. Both species displayed deep torpor whereby the body temperatures of ca. 5 °C and oxygen consumption as low as 2% of basal metabolic rate were attained. Torpor bout length (n=57 bouts) never exceeded 24 h. These data are characteristic of both hibernation (minimum body temperature and metabolism) and daily torpor (bout length), and argue that these two physiological responses may not necessarily have separate evolutionary origins. Photoperiodic time measurement regulating larval diapause in the pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, varies in a close relationship with latitude. The critical photoperiod mediating the maintenance and termination of diapause is positively correlated with latitude (r 2 = 0.977) among six populations from southern (30–31° N), intermediate (40° N), and northern (46–49° N) latitudes in North America. The developmental response to unnaturally short and to unnaturally long photoperiods declines with increasing latitude, so that longer critical photoperiods are associated with a downward rather than a lateral shift in the photoperiodic response curve. Exotic light and dark cycles of varying period (T) with a short (10 h) photophase and a scotophase ranging from 14 (T = 24) to 62 (T = 72) h, reveal two geographic patterns: a decline in perturbability of the photoperiodic clock with increasing latitude, and no change with latitude in the 21-h period of rising and falling development with increasing T. These results show (1) that there is a rhythmic component to photoperiodic time measurement in W. smithii, (2) that the period of this rhythm is about 21 h in all populations, and (3) that more northern populations show decreasing responsiveness to photoperiod and increasing stability against perturbation by exotic period lengths (T > 24). Previous studies on W.␣smithii indicate that this single temperate species of a tropical and subtropical genus has evolved from south to north. We therefore conclude that the evolution of increasing critical photoperiod in W. smithii during its adaptive radiation into North America has more likely involved the amplitude and not the period of the underlying circadian pacemaker. Thermoregulation, energetics and patterns of torpor in the pygmy mouse lemur, Microcebus myoxinus, were investigated under natural conditions of photoperiod and temperature in the Kirindy/CFPF Forest in western Madagascar. M. myoxinus entered torpor spontaneously during the cool dry season. Torpor only occurred on a daily basis and torpor bout duration was on average 9.6 h, and ranged from 4.6 h to 19.2 h. Metabolic rates during torpor were reduced to about 86% of the normothermic value. Minimum body temperature during daily torpor was 6.8 °C at an ambient temperature of 6.3 °C. Entry into torpor occurred randomly between 2000 and 0620 hours, whereas arousals from torpor were clustered around 1300 hours within a narrow time window of less than 4 h. Arousal from torpor was a two-step process with a first passive climb of body temperature to a mean of 27 °C, carried by the daily increase of ambient temperature when oxygen consumption remained more or less constant, followed by a second active increase of oxygen consumption to further raise the body temperature to normothermic values. In conclusion, daily body temperature rhythms in M. myoxinus further reduce the energetic costs of daily torpor seen in other species: they extend to unusually low body temperatures and consequently low metabolic rates in torpor, and they employ passive warming to reduce the energetic costs of arousal. Thus, these energy-conserving adaptations may represent an important energetic aid to the pygmy mouse lemur and help to promote their individual fitness. Accepted: 2 November 1999  相似文献

We analysed the effect of daily temperature cycles in relation to constant temperature on day/night melatonin synthesis in frog eyecups in culture. Eyecups were cultured for 24 h under 12L:12D photoperiod and two thermal regimes, constant temperature (25, 15 and 5 °C) and thermoperiod (WL/CD, thermophase coinciding with photophase and cryophase coinciding with scotophase; and CL/WD, cryophase coinciding with photophase and thermophase coinciding with scotophase). A negative correlation between ocular serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity and culture temperature for both diurnal and nocturnal activities has been observed. This effect of increased ocular activity at low temperature is more pronounced than the well-known stimulatory effect of darkness, and it does not depend on the photoperiod phase. The lack of interactions between the phase of photoperiod and culture temperature indicates that the effects of both factors are independent. Nighttime temperature is the key factor in determining the amplitude of the melatonin rhythm in the Rana perezi retina. However, daytime temperature can not counteract the inhibitory effect of light on ocular melatonin synthesis. Accepted: 22 June 1995  相似文献

Largemouth (Micropterus salmoide) and smallmouth (M. dolomieui) blackbasses tested in an electronic shuttlebox exhibited behavioral thermoregulatory rhythms which were temporally complementary. With a LD 12 : 12 photoperiod, M. dolomieui exhibited a preferred-temperature peak of 30.1°C during the latter portion of the photophase, when M. salmoides reached a minimum of 27.1°C. M. dolomieui exhibited a minimum of 26.6°C during the latter portion of scotophase, while M. salmoides remained at a significantly higher plateau of about 29°C, with a peak of 29.5°C at the midpoint of scotophase. The phase relations of the thermoregulatory rhythms relative to photoperiod suggest that they are endogenously timed circadian rhythms entrained by photoperiod. The thermotemporal complementarity of these rhythms suggests an aspect of niche segregation between these largely sympatric congeneric species.  相似文献

PvLHY and Lhcb expression has been studied in primary bean leaves after exposure of etiolated leaves to two or three white light-pulses and under different photoperiods. Under the tested photoperiods, the steady-state mRNA levels exhibit diurnal oscillations with zenith in the morning between ZT21 and 4 for PvLHY and between ZT4 and 6 for Lhcb. Nadir is in the evening between ZT12 and 18 for PvLHY and ZT18 and 24 for Lhcb. Light-pulses to etiolated seedlings induce a differentiated acute response that is reciprocally correlated with the amplitude of the following circadian cycle. In addition, the clock modulates the duration of the acute response (descending part of the curve included), which according to the phase of the rhythm at light application extends from 7 to 18 h. This constitutes the response dynamics of the Phaseolus clock to light. Similarly, the waveform of PvLHY and Lhcb expression during the day of different photoperiods resembles in induction capability (accomplishment of peak after lights-on) and duration (from lights-on phase to trough) the phase-dependent progression of acute response in etiolated seedlings. Consequently, the peak of Lhcb (all tested photoperiods) and PvLHY (in LD 18:6) attained in the photophase corresponds to the acute response peak, while the peak of PvLHY during the scotophase (in LD 12:12 and 6:18) corresponds to the circadian peak. Thus, the effect of the response dynamics in the photoperiod determines the coincidence of the peak with the photo- or scotophase, respectively. This represents a new model mechanism for the adaptation of the Phaseolus clock to light.  相似文献

Plasma glucose concentrations in birds are much higher than those in mammals of similar body mass, and they are thought to be kept more or less constant. We investigated plasma glucose concentrations of Malachite Sunbirds (Nectarinia famosa) to determine whether there was a circadian rhythm in plasma glucose and whether plasma glucose concentrations rose at lower temperatures. We explored the possibility that glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis might be used by birds before daylight to generate body heat during arousal from torpor or from overnight adaptive heterothermy. Plasma glucose concentration of Malachite Sunbirds were relatively high, between 13.6 and 21.4 mmol/L. Plasma glucose concentrations were higher at 5°C than at 25°C, and generally lower during the scotophase, particularly in the early hours of the morning. Therefore, it appears that Malachite Sunbirds are not increasing plasma glucose concentrations during arousal from torpor or to increase scotophase body temperature levels to photophase levels. It is apparent that these nectarivorous birds have a circadian variation in plasma glucose concentrations that is affected by ambient temperature and feeding patterns.  相似文献

Abstract. The grape berry moth, Lobesia botrana Denn. & Sciff. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), one of the most injurious pest of grape berries in Greece, is a multivoltine species that overwinters as diapausing pupae. The effects of several diel and non-diel photoperiods and of temperature, experienced by eggs and larvae, on pupal diapause induction were investigated. The diapause response curve was of Type I (long day type) and the determining factor was the duration of scotophase (> 11 h), regardless of the duration of photophase. However, at very short (< 4 h) photoperiods, the incidence of diapause was also high. Diapause was positively and significantly correlated with the egg-larval developmental time, pupal mortality and the duration of the pupal stage. Eggs and larvae reared under LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod and various temperatures (from 12 to 30 °C) produced diapausing pupae (almost 100%), but the duration of the pupal stage (intensity of diapause) increased with increasing temperature. Under continuous darkness, however, the percentage diapause decreased with increasing temperature. Single and double 1-h light pulses were applied systematically at various times during the scotophase of six diapause-inducing diel photoperiods. Two photosensitive points in time (called A and B) were revealed, during which illumination resulted in a significant decrease of diapause induction. The decrease was much greater during the first sensitive period (early in scotophase) rather than in the second (late in the scotophase).  相似文献

The characteristics of daily torpor were measured in the round-eared elephant shrew Macroscelides proboscideus (Macroscelidea) in response to ambient temperature and food deprivation. Elephant shrews are an ancient mammal order within a superordinal African clade including hyraxes, elephants, dugongs and the aardvark. M. proboscideus only employed torpor when deprived of food; torpor did not occur under an ad libitum diet at ambient temperatures of 10, 15 and 25?°C. Torpor bout duration ranged from <1?h to ca. 18?h. The times of entry into torpor were restricted to the scotophase, despite normothermic body temperature patterns indicating a rest phase coincident with the photophase. Full arousal was always achieved within the first 3?h of the photophase. When food deprived, the onset of the rest phase, and hence torpor, advanced with respect to the experimental photoperiod. The lowest torpor body temperature measured was 9.41?°C. Daily torpor in M. proboscideus confirms a pleisiomorphic origin of daily heterothermy. Torpor facilitates risk-averse foraging behaviour in these small omnivores by overcoming long-term energy shortfalls generated by the inherent variability of food availability in their semi-arid, El Niño-afflicted habitats.  相似文献

Codling moth female calling and male pheromone responsiveness under the defined conditions of 23°C and light:dark (LD) 16:8 occurred primarily during scotophase. Under either continuous photophase or scotophase females called with periodicities very similar to their periodicity under the LD cycle, indicating that the rhythmicity is circadian. Male response rhythmicity was maintained under continuous photophase. A decrease in the temperature from 23° to 16°C resulted in a reduction in the proportion calling when the decrease in temperature occurred during scotophase and a shift of maximal calling into photophase when the decrease in temperature occurred 3 hr prior to the initiation of scotophase. Decreases of temperature from 23° to 16°C and of light intensity did not produce similar shifts in the periodicity of male upwind orientation. Of 6 pheromone dosages from 10?5 to 102 μg, 10?1 and 100 μg elicited the most male upwind orientation.  相似文献

Little is known about how animals from tropical and subtropical climates adjust their energy expenditure to cope with seasonal changes of climate and food availability. To provide such information, we studied the thermal physiology, torpor patterns and energetics of the nocturnal blossom-bat (Syconycteris australis 18 g) from a subtropical habitat in both summer and winter. In both seasons, S. australis frequently entered daily torpor at ambient temperatures between 12 and 25°C when food and water were withheld. Unlike patterns observed in temperate animals, mean minimum metabolic rates during torpor were lower in summer (0.47 ± 0.07 ml O2 g−1 h−1) than in winter (0.75 ± 0.11 ml O2 g−1 h−1). Body temperatures during torpor were regulated at 19.3 ± 1.0°C in summer and at 23.4 ± 2.0°C in winter. Torpor bout duration was significantly longer in summer (7.3 ± 0.6 h) than in winter (5.5 ± 0.3 h), but in both seasons, bout duration was not affected by ambient temperature. Consequently, average daily metabolic rates were also significantly lower in summer than in winter. Body temperatures and metabolic rates in normothermic bats did not change with season. Our findings on seasonal changes of torpor in this bat from the subtropics are opposite to those made for many species from cold climates which generally show deeper and longer torpor in winter and are often entirely homeothermic in summer. More pronounced torpor in subtropical S. australis in summer may be due to low or unpredictable nectar availability, short nights which limit the time available for foraging, and long days without access to food. Thus, the reversed seasonal response of this subtropical bat in comparison to temperate species may be an appropriate response to ecological constraints. In the laboratory rock elephant shrews (Elephantulus myurus; mean body mass 56.6 g) displayed the lowest torpor Tb min yet recorded (ca. 5°C) in a placental daily heterotherm. It was unknown whether these low Tbs were characteristic of daily heterothermy in free-ranging animals. It was also unclear how cost effective these low Tbs were since considerable energy is required to arouse from low Tbs on a daily basis. We continuously measured body temperature once every hour for 85 days in 13 free-ranging E. myurus from May to August 2001 (winter) in Weenen Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We recorded a total of 412 torpor bouts. Free-ranging E. myurus had a high propensity for torpor with females displaying higher torpor frequency than males. The lowest Tb recorded was 7.5°C at Ta=2.7°C and the minimum torpor Tb was strongly correlated with ambient temperature. Torpor arousal was tightly coupled with ambient temperature cycles. Low torpor Tb min at low Tas was therefore cost-effective because the animals offset the high cost of arousal through exogenous passive heating. Laboratory studies under constant ambient temperatures may therefore underestimate the energetic benefits of torpor in free-ranging small mammals that inhabit regions where seasonality is moderate.

Circadian clocks govern daily physiological and molecular rhythms, and putative rhythms in the expression of metabolizing xenobiotics have been described in insects. Such rhythms could have important consequences for outcomes of chemical exposures at different times of the day. The proportion of photophase (light) and scotophase (dark) also influence the enzyme activities. Several studies have been done on the mechanism of insecticide resistance in Spodoptera litura exposed to chemical insecticides. This study is aimed at understanding the circadian variations of cypermethrin detoxification mechanisms in S. litura. The toxicity of insecticide, cypermethrin exposed to three different photoperiods in 3rd instar larvae of S. litura has been investigated. Detoxification enzyme profiles of α- and β-esterases, glutathione S-transferase (GST), and cytochrome P450 (Cyt P450) were assessed. The results showed that larvae were more tolerant to cypermethrin treated larvae at 8 h L: 16 h D photoperiod as compared with two other photoperiods tested. We observed significant increases in α- and β-esterases and cyt P450 activities in 4 and 8 h at different photoperiods. GST activity was significantly changed at different photoperiods at different timings. Activities of specific detoxification enzymes fluctuated during the time, and for specific insecticides, the concentration resulting in 50% mortality varied significantly during the different photoperiods. The time of the day when chemical exposure is imposed should be an important consideration in the experimental design, and use of pesticides.  相似文献

The evolution of endothermy is thought to have been facilitated by the advent of endothermic energy sources such as brown adipose tissue (BAT), the principal site of non-shivering thermogenesis (NST). In marsupials, heat is primarily produced through shivering and NST in skeletal muscle because BAT is either absent or appears to be non-functional. The most basal group of the eutherian lineage are the Afrotheria. Rock elephant shrews, Elephantulus myurus are amongst the smallest members of the Afrotheria and are also known to use exogenous passive heating. The aim of this study was to determine whether the reliance on passive heating compromised the capacity for thermogenesis in E. myurus. We measured the thermogenic response to noradrenalin (NA) injection in E. myurus acclimated to short photoperiod. The thermogenic response at 25°C was 1.58 ml O2 g−1 h−1. We used phylogenetically independent analyses to establish how this thermogenic response compared to other eutherians that display classical NST. The thermogenic response of E. myurus was not significantly different from phylogenetically independent allometric predictions. However, it is unclear whether this thermogenic response is indicative of classical NST and molecular data are required to verify the presence of BAT and UCPs in elephant shrews.  相似文献

The predatory miteAmblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) is an important biological control agent for thrips in commercial greenhouses, but its effectiveness in fall and winter is limited by reproductive diapause induced under short day conditions. Influence of photoperiod and temperature on diapause induction was investigated to provide information for successful management of the predator. Under 8∶16 (L∶D) photoperiods and 22°C photophase temperatures, diapause incidence was inversely related to scotophase temperature, decreasing from 100% diapause at 15°C to no diapause at 21°C. In continuous darkness, diapause was induced by thermoperiods of 20∶10 and 22∶17 and 22∶17 but not 25∶15°C (T∶C) (8h thermophase). Critical daylength for inducing diapause under 22∶17°C (T∶C) was 12.45 h, which was consistent with the trend in diapause incidence in mites collected from an established greenhouse population September to November. MostA. cucumeris diapaused only when exposed to diapause inducing conditions throughout their juvenile development and none stopped laying eggs when transferred from nondiapause to diapause inducing conditions as adults. After 14 generations of genetic selection for a nondiapause strain, diapause incidence was 33.3%.   相似文献

Little is known about torpor in the tropics or torpor in megachiropteran species. We investigated thermoregulation, energetics and patterns of torpor in the northern blossom-bat Macroglossus minimus (16 g) to test whether physiological variables may explain why its range is limited to tropical regions. Normothermic bats showed a large variation in body temperature (T b) (33 to 37 °C) over a wide range of ambient temperatures (T as) and a relatively low basal metabolic rate (1.29 ml O2 g−1 h−1). Bats entered torpor frequently in the laboratory at T as between 14 and 25 °C. Entry into torpor always occurred when lights were switched on in the morning, independent of T a. MRs during torpor were reduced to about 20–40% of normothermic bats and T bs were regulated at a minimum of 23.1 ± 1.4 °C. The duration of torpor bouts increased with decreasing T a in non-thermoregulating bats, but generally terminated after 8 h in thermoregulating torpid bats. Both the mean minimum T b and MR of torpid M. minimus were higher than that predicted for a 16-g daily heterotherm and the T b was also about 5 °C higher than that of the common blossom-bat Syconycteris australis, which has a more subtropical distribution. These observations suggest that variables associated with torpor are affected by T a and that the restriction to tropical areas in M. minimus to some extent may be due to their ability to enter only very shallow daily torpor. Circadian rhythms, which are ubiquitous and adaptive, occur across all species, from microbes to humans, in which they organize and modify behavior and physiology. timeless (tim) is a canonical clock gene. The core composition of the Drosophila melanogaster endogenous circadian clock has been extensively investigated; however, in lepidopteran insects, including Bombyx mori, the mechanism is complicated and little is known regarding the participation of tim in the negative feedback loop responsible for behavioral activities. To arrive at a comprehensive understanding of the role of tim in the B. mori endogenous circadian clock, we exploited the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 gene editing system. We attempted to elucidate the functions of tim in the circadian clock of B. mori using Bmtim mutants. The knockouts affected two circadian behavioral activities: adult emergence and embryo hatching rhythms. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction results confirmed that tim-knockouts induced relative reductions in the expression levels, and thereby the oscillation amplitudes, of Bmper and Bmclk messenger RNAs during both the photophase and scotophase. Additionally, the daily rhythmic expression of Bmdbt was upregulated in the photophase and downregulated in the scotophase in a tim-knockout. Our study reveals that tim is integral to the B. mori circadian clock and may be involved in regulating eclosion and hatching rhythms.  相似文献

Information regarding passerine heterothermy and torpor is scant, although many species are small and must cope with a fluctuating food supply and presumably would benefit from energy savings afforded by torpor. We studied whether insectivorous Dusky Woodswallows (Artamus cyanopterus; ∼35 g) enter spontaneous torpor (food ad libitum) when held outdoors as a pair in autumn/winter. Woodswallows displayed pronounced and regular daily fluctuations in body temperature (T b) over the entire study period. The mean T b ranged from ∼39°C to 40°C (photophase, day time) and ∼33°C to 36°C (scotophase, night time). However, on 88% of bird nights, nocturnal T b minima fell to < 35°C. The lowest T b observed in air was 29.2°C. However, when a bird fell into water its T b dropped further to ∼22°C; this T b was regulated for several hours and the bird survived. Our observations suggest that heterothermy is a normal part of the daily thermal regime for woodswallows to minimise energy expenditure. Spontaneous nocturnal torpor in captive woodswallows suggests that torpor in the wild may be more pronounced than recorded here because free-living birds are likely challenged by both low food availability and adverse weather.  相似文献
