The behavior of polar deep-sea nekton is very poorly known. To obtain insight into mating behavior of the abundant and ecologically important sub-Antarctic deep-sea squid Onykia ingens, our goals were to (1) quantify spermatophore production; (2) determine the preferred location for spermatangia deposition; (3) investigate whether male and female O. ingens mate with multiple mates; and (4) discuss the location of implanted spermatangia in light of mating behavior and egg fertilization. Toward this end, we examined male and female O. ingens specimens from Falkland Island and New Zealand waters. Male O. ingens store up to 198 spermatophores (mean 103 ± 61; n = 12) in their reproductive system, which are produced over a period of considerable somatic growth (200–400 mm ML), and which may have a considerable size range. Males insert their long extendible terminal organ in the mantle cavity of the female, potentially through the funnel, to deposit spermatophores in one or more of four regions on the female’s body. Most implanted spermatangia (52.5 %) were found in the funnel region, but many were also found inside the mantle cavity closer to the oviducts. Males with longer terminal organs therefore may be able to position closer to the oviducts where fertilization chances are higher than for spermatangia located in the funnel region. The number of implanted spermatangia per individual female (4–60, mean 29 ± 20; n = 24), the multiregional spermatangia deposition, and the different outer appearance of spermatangia, suggested that females have multiple mating events. Since males produce more spermatophores (up to 200) than the number of spermatangia in one region (<60), it is likely that males too mate with more than one female. We show how quantitative assessment of reproductive characteristics can provide insight into the reproductive behavior of deep-sea species for which in situ observations are currently lacking.  相似文献

Behavioral interactions between individuals of the same sex can affect the outcome of intersexual selection. For this reason, intrasexual selection is oftentimes examined independently from intersexual selection in studies aimed at understanding mating behaviors. However, a more complete understanding of sexual selection effects within a population can only come from exploring both intrasexual and intersexual selection and the potential interactions between the levels of selection. Association preferences in male and female Etheostoma fonticola do not reveal a size preference for same sex or opposite-sex individuals. However, male-male interactions may influence female choice in E. fonticola. We examined whether male E. fonticola that differ in body size exhibit differences in agonistic behaviors and mating success. Larger males do exhibit higher rates of aggressive behaviors and smaller males, in turn, exhibit more defensive behaviors. However, differences between larger and smaller males in male-male interactions did not translate into differences in spawning success. These results suggest that male size influences dominance relationships in E. fonticola but not mating success. There were also no differences between large and small males in mating attempts, which could be an outcome of the year-round breeding season found in this species, females laying eggs singly, or males fertilizing eggs individually.  相似文献

Bactrocera carambolae and B. dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae) are extremely destructive pests of fruits and vegetables in the Asia-Pacific region. Earlier reports have described that B. carambolae and B. dorsalis, respectively, use mainly star fruit and mango, suggesting a certain level of host partitioning which can be ascribed neither to differences in larval food qualities nor host-specific parasitoid mortality. This study specifically examined reproductive interference (antagonistic sexual interaction) between B. carambolae and B. dorsalis as a potential factor strongly affecting their host partitioning. We observed mating behaviors, especially interspecific courtships and mating, by cohabiting the conspecific and heterospecific pairs together. Consequently, we quantified their effects on the reproductive success of females. Males of both species frequently courted their own females, but they also courted females of other species. Courtship refusal by females was not selective in males of either species. This incomplete discrimination of both sexes led to frequent occurrences of interspecific sexual interactions in both species, but only B. carambolae females showed reduced reproductive success. These results suggest that B. dorsalis, superior in reproductive interference, can occupy high-quality mango, whereas B. carambolae, inferior in reproductive interference, must use low-quality star fruit.  相似文献

As an initial contribution to understanding the adaptive value of behavioral and life-history strategies, the life cycle and mating behavior of an unstudied species of tephritid fruit fly in the genus Rhagoletis are characterized for the first time. Over a 9-month fruiting period, a small proportion of Solanum appendiculatum Dunal (< 10 %) was found to be infested with a single larva of Rhagoletis solanophaga (Hernández & Frías). The average duration of R. solanophaga lifecycle (c.a. 140 days from egg laying to death of adults) exceeded the three month fruitless period. Additionally, R. solanophaga is capable of exploiting Solanaceous plants in at least two genera. These features could have selected for a non-diapausing species of Rhagoletis, a genus where most species are univoltine. Nevertheless, some individuals in the population became dormant. As other members of the genus, R. solanophaga exhibited a resource defense mating system with forced copulations and multiple mating. Both males and females could be highly promiscuous and individual mating success exhibited a wide range of outcomes. Regardless of mating success, mated females stored similar amounts of sperm in two spherical spermathecae. Long copulations were observed, perhaps functioning as a form of mate guarding with probable disadvantages for females. We outline hypotheses and opportunities for future comparative studies examining sperm competition and mate guarding.  相似文献

The specific features of mating females and males of different morphs collected from a population of the wasp P. dominulus in Southern Ukraine were studied. Data analysis of mating individuals in experiments indicated a random mate choice by size and assortative mating by coloration. The most actively copulating males in the experiments had light-colored mesopleuron, sternite, and fore and middle coxae. They were similar in the color pattern and size to resident males, which defend their territories in the habitat. Most P. dominulus females mated only once. In their coloration, those females represented the majority of the individuals in the population. The color variability of the foundresses was shown to change in a cyclic pattern. The possibility that such variability may result from selective or assortative mating is discussed. The color and pattern traits of P. dominulus females and males could serve as markers of their reproductive strategies and their reproductive success on the whole.  相似文献

Sperm production is costly and so males are expected to prudently allocate sperm to matings in a manner that maximizes their fitness. Sperm competition hypotheses predict that when facing increased sperm competition risk males should increase their investment in ejaculates. In contrast, when facing high future mating opportunities, males are expected to decrease their sperm investment in the current mating. This is because males should keep in reserve an amount of sperm proportional to their expected future mating opportunities. We experimentally tested whether male Cook Strait giant weta (Anostostomatidae: Orthoptera: Deinacrida rugosa) phenotypically adjust their investment in ejaculates in relation to their perceived risk of sperm competition and future mating opportunities. D. rugosa is a large flightless orthopteran insect in which males pass multiple spermatophores to females during a day-long mating bout. Contrary to expectation, we found that low female availability (i.e. increased sperm competition risk) had no effect on male resource allocation to sperm (i.e. number of spermatophores) compared to controls whereas, contrary to expectation, males experiencing high female availability increased their ejaculate investment by transferring significantly more spermatophores to their mates. Our results might be a consequence of males being insensitive to increased presence of rival males, reducing their allocation to sperm under increasingly risky circumstances, or due to females prolonging copulations when their perceived future mating opportunities are low.  相似文献

Effective population size (N e) quantifies the effects of micro-evolutionary processes and the rate of loss of genetic diversity in a population. Several demographic and mating parameters reduce N e. Theoretical studies elucidate the impacts of various demographic and mating system parameters on N e, while empirical studies illustrate realized N e for species with differing life histories and mating systems. However, effect of intra-specific variation in mating system on effective size remains largely unexplored. In this paper we investigated the effect of promiscuous and polygynous mating on N e in two wild populations of the short-nosed fruit bat, Cynopterus sphinx. N e/N (ratio of effective population size to census size) was lower than unity in both populations, and much lower for the polygynous population compared to promiscuous population. Elasticity analyses reveal that N e/N was sensitive to deviations in the sex ratio. Variance in female reproductive success had a higher impact on N e compared to variance in male reproductive success in the promiscuous population. However, for the polygynous population, impact of variance in male reproductive success on N e was higher than that of variance in female reproductive success. Our results suggest that depending on mating system, different populations of the same species could have alternate evolutionary trajectories. The rate of loss of genetic diversity would be lower for the promiscuous population compared to the polygynous population. Our study is the first to highlight which parameters would most significantly impact population specific N e under different mating systems.  相似文献

Dispersal ability may influence antipredator and mating strategies. A previous study showed a trade-off between predation avoidance and mating success in strains of the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum selected for walking distance. Specifically, beetles derived from strains selected for longer walking distance suffered higher predation pressure and had higher male mating success than their counterparts derived from strains selected for shorter walking distance. In the study reported here, we compared the locomotor activity, biogenic amine expression in the brain, and death-feigning behavior of the red flour beetle strains selected for walking distance. The results indicated that individuals genetically predisposed to longer walking distance had higher locomotor activity and lower intensity of death-feigning behavior than those genetically predisposed to shorter walking distance. However, no significant differences were found in the expression of biogenic amines in the brain among strains selected for walking distance, although the level of dopamine in the brain differed from that of the strains divergently selected for duration of death-feigning behavior. The relationships between walking speed, activity, death-feigning behavior, and brain biogenic amines in T. castaneum are discussed.  相似文献

Diversity of A mating type in Lentinula edodes has been assessed by analysis of A mating loci in 127 strains collected from East Asia. It was discovered that hypervariable sequence region with an approximate length of 1 kb in the A mating locus, spanning 5′ region of HD2-intergenic region-5′ region of HD1, could represent individual A mating type as evidenced by comprehensive mating analysis. The sequence analysis revealed 27 A mating type alleles from 96 cultivated strains and 48 alleles from 31 wild strains. Twelve of them commonly appeared, leaving 63 unique A mating type alleles. It was also revealed that only A few A mating type alleles such as A1, A4, A5, and A7 were prevalent in the cultivated strains, accounting for 62.5% of all A mating types. This implies preferred selection of certain A mating types in the process of strain development and suggests potential role of A mating genes in the expression of genes governing mushroom quality. Dominant expression of an A mating gene HD1 was observed from A1 mating locus, the most prevalent A allele, in A1-containing dikaryons. However, connections between HD1 expression and A1 preference in the cultivated strains remain to be verified. The A mating type was highly diverse in the wild strains. Thirty-six unique A alleles were discovered from relatively small and confined area of mountainous region in Korean peninsula. The number will further increase because no A allele has been recurrently observed in the wild strains and thus newly discovered strain will have good chances to contain new A allele. The high diversity in small area also suggests that the A mating locus has evolved rapidly and thus its diversity will further increase.  相似文献

Rapid displacements of resident Aedes aegypti by invasions of Aedes albopictus have been documented in the southeastern United States and Bermuda. Interspecific mating has been detected in nature between these species and proposed as a likely mechanism for these displacements by means of asymmetric reproductive interference, or satyrization. However, rapid displacements of A. aegypti have not been detected in most localities where these two invasive species are known to co-occur. Aedes albopictus invaded the United States and Brazil at approximately the same time, in the mid-1980s, but the origins of the invading strains are known to be different. Here we tested the hypothesis, in standardized cage environments, that A. albopictus males from Brazil are less capable of satyrizing A. aegypti females than A. albopictus males from the United States. Using strains of A. aegypti and A. albopictus from the United States of known susceptibility to and capacity for interspecific mating, we demonstrate that A. albopictus colonized from collections in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Manaus were relatively unsuccessful in inseminating virgin female A. aegypti from Key West Florida compared to A. albopictus from peninsular Florida. We suggest that the low satyrization potential of Brazilian A. albopictus males may contribute to the lack of documented competitive displacements of A. aegypti in that country.  相似文献

Emergence of male dimorphism within a species is the evolutionary process of disruptive selection. In squids, two types of male mating behaviour, known as alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs), are causally associated with adult body size. Males inseminate promiscuously with the same females; large “consort” males internally, and small “sneaker” males externally. Previously we found that in Heterololigo bleekeri, sneaker (but not consort) spermatozoa are able to swarm by sensing self-emitted CO2. This suggests that a swarming trait might have arisen in sneakers as a “sperm cooperation” strategy among sibling sperm in order to compete with consort males, or as a consequence of adaptation to external fertilization. To address these possibilities, we examined six species where three patterns of insemination are present, namely, only internal, only external, or both ARTs. In three species that employ both ARTs (H. bleekeri, Loligo reynaudii and Uroteuthis edulis), sneaker spermatozoa always exhibited self-swarming capacity. In Idiosepius paradoxus and Todarodes pacificus, which use only external insemination, spermatozoa formed a swarm. However, in Euprymna morsei, which use only internal insemination, sperm were unable to swarm. These results suggest that the self-swarming trait is likely to be linked to the mode of insemination rather than the alternative strategy used by sneaker males. Thus we propose a new hypothesis in which cooperative sperm behaviour has evolved not only through kin selection against sperm competition risks, but also through adaptation to the insemination/fertilization environment.  相似文献

The males of the species of frogs Engystomops pustulosus produce simple and complex calls to lure females, as a way of intersexual selection. Complex calls lead males to a greater reproductive success than what simple calls do. However, the complex calls are also more attractive to their main predator, the bat Trachops cirrhosus. Therefore, as M. Ryan suggests in (The túngara frog: a study in sexual selection and communication. University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1985), the complexity of the calls lets the frogs keep a trade-off between reproductive success and predation. In this paper, we verify this trade-off from the perspective of game theory. We first model the proportion of simple calls as a symmetric game of two strategies. We also model the effect of adding a third strategy, males that keep quiet and intercept females, which would play a role of intrasexual selection. Under the assumption that the decision of the males takes into account this trade-off between reproductive success and predation, our model reproduces the observed behavior reported in the literature with minimal assumption on the parameters. From the model with three strategies, we verify that the quiet strategy could only coexists with the simple and complex strategies if the rate at which quiet males intercept females is high, which explains the rarity of the quiet strategy. We conclude that the reproductive strategy of the male frog E. pustulosus is rational.  相似文献

Nonhuman primates represent a strong model for examining the chromosomal, biochemical, and temporal normality of embryos produced byin vitro fertilization. Morein vitro fertilized embryos from the squirrel monkey(Saimiri sciureus) have been produced and examined than with all other primate species combined. In studies over a 13 year period a fertilization rate approximating 60 % has been developed in this species with 30% of these embryos proceeding to the two cell stage and 50% of these to the three-four cell stage. Chromosomal abnormalities (primarily missing or extra chromosomes) at a level of nine to 16% have been found, a value corresponding to that found inin vivo mating andin vitro fertilization in other species. An incidence of triploidy of 16.7% was observed. RNA and protein synthetic rates appear comparable with those of laboratory species subjected toin vitro fertilization and indicate the initial stages of metabolic activity of the newly formed embryo. Similarly, increases in estrogen incorporation appear after fertilization but no effect is observed in progesterone incorporation. Utilizing 2-deoxy-glucose and insulin, it was determined that the glucose requirement as an energy source for early preimplantationin vitro fertilized primate embryos is very low.Of very great importance is the temporal relationship of the development ofin vitro fertilized squirrel monkey embryos compared with similar development in other primates (including humans) afterin vivo andin vitro fertilization. An analysis of over a decade of work with the squirrel monkey embryos demonstrates a pattern of temporal development that is comparable with all other primate species that have been examined (including the human) and comparable with development afterin vivo fertilization.  相似文献

1. There are numerous data that support the trade‐off between flight capability and reproduction in female wing polymorphic insects, but the relationship between wing form and fitness remains poorly investigated in males. 2. In the present study, the development of flight muscle and gonads, spermatophore size, and multiple copulation ability were investigated in both long‐winged (LW) and short‐winged (SW) males to verify this trade‐off, using a wing dimorphic cricket species Velarifictorus aspersus (Walker). 3. The LW males had better‐developed wing muscles than the SW males on the day of emergence, and both of them developed wing muscles after emergence, but the peak of weight in SW males was achieved 4 days later than that of the LW males. The accessory glands (AG) of the LW males developed significantly slower than that of the SW males. These results suggest that development and maintenance of flight muscles have a cost on the development of reproductive organs in male V. asperses. 4. The SW males produced significantly heavier spermatophores in a single copulation and mated more often than LW males. This indicates the SW males have a higher mating success than the LW males, thereby increasing their chance of siring offspring.  相似文献

Alebion Krøyer, 1863 is one of the genera of the Caligidae Burmeister, 1835 and can easily be distinguished from other genera by the presence of modified exopodal spines on legs 1–3. Currently there are eight recognised species infecting a variety of elasmobranch hosts. Alebion difficile (van Beneden, 1892) is resurrected based on the difference in the structure of the spermatophores on the genital complex of the female but also the difference in the relative lengths of the posterior processes of the genital complex, the lateral processes on the first abdominal somite and the caudal rami. Additionally, the adult male of A. difficile is described and illustrated and notes provided about the morphology of the sub-adult females and males. Other Alebion species and their hosts collected off South Africa are reported and an updated key to the adult females of the species of Alebion is provided.  相似文献

Sexual selection is believed to play a major role in speciation processes of cichlid fishes in the East African Great Lakes, in particular Lakes Malawi and Victoria, by driving diversification in male nuptial coloration. In Lake Tanganyika, a high rate of color pattern diversification is found in the genus Tropheus, where more than 100, mostly allopatric, color morphs have been described. Whether color pattern differentiation in Tropheus could follow from sexual selection as well, has not yet been conclusively shown. Unlike typical sexually selected species, Tropheus are sexually monomorphic, establish temporary pair bonds and spawn monogamously. Variance in mating success among individuals would still allow for sexual selection, but due to their high population census sizes, parentage data from natural populations are difficult to obtain. Simulations designed according to existing data on mating behavior in Tropheus suggested that variance in male reproductive success can be substantial and lead to levels of opportunity for selection, which are similar to values estimated, for example, from natural populations of sexually dimorphic songbirds. Variance in male success was mostly affected by the way females perceived and reacted to differences between males, and to a lesser extent by the duration of components of the reproductive cycles of males and females. These results indicate that future work on the importance of sexual selection in Tropheus should concentrate on mate choice cues and female mate choice behavior, but does not depend critically on the acquisition of more detailed life history data.  相似文献

Male Ilyoplax pusilla perform a waving display, a simple up-down movement of the claws during the reproductive season. Large males dedicated most of their surface activity to waving displays and gained higher mating success. On the other hand, small males infrequently performed waving displays and devoted their time exclusively to foraging. To examine female preference for the size of waving males, two female-release experiments were conducted. In the experiments, we recorded female choice between small- and large-waving claw models over short (10 cm) and long (25 cm) distances. In both the short- and long-distance choice experiments, significantly more females chose the large-claw model over the small-claw model. The following characteristics may produce obvious age-dependent sexual advertisement in I. pusilla, which grows throughout a life: (1) the strong female preference for large claws; (2) the short, 2-year lifespan that includes only two reproductive seasons; and (3) the lack of alternative mating strategies (e.g., surface mating).  相似文献

Genes involved in mating type determination and recognition were examined in Metschnikowia and related species, to gather insights on factors affecting mating compatibility patterns among haplontic, heterothallic yeast species of the genus. We confirmed the universality of the special mating locus organisation found in Clavispora lusitaniae across and exclusive to the family Metschnikowiaceae (i.e., Metschnikowia and Clavispora). Timing of the divergence between idiomorphs was confirmed to coincide with the origin of the larger (CUG-ser) clade comprising the Debaryomycetaceae and the Metschnikowiaceae, exclusive of Cephaloascus fragrans. The sequence of the a mating pheromone is highly conserved within the large-spored Metschnikowia species, including Metschnikowia orientalis and Metschnikowia hawaiiana, but not Metschnikowia drosophilae or Metschnikowia torresii, which have a pattern of their own, as do other clades in the genus. In contrast, variation in α pheromones shows a more continuous, although imperfect correlation with phylogenetic distance as well as with in vivo mating compatibility.  相似文献

Background

The carambola fruit fly, Bactrocera carambolae Drew & Hancock is a high profile key pest that is widely distributed in the southwestern ASEAN region. In addition, it has trans-continentally invaded Suriname, where it has been expanding east and southward since 1975. This fruit fly belongs to Bactrocera dorsalis species complex. The development and application of a genetic sexing strain (Salaya1) of B. dorsalis sensu stricto (s.s.) (Hendel) for the sterile insect technique (SIT) has improved the fruit fly control. However, matings between B. dorsalis s.s. and B. carambolae are incompatible, which hinder the application of the Salaya1 strain to control the carambola fruit fly. To solve this problem, we introduced genetic sexing components from the Salaya1 strain into the B. carambolae genome by interspecific hybridization.

Results

Morphological characteristics, mating competitiveness, male pheromone profiles, and genetic relationships revealed consistencies that helped to distinguish Salaya1 and B. carambolae strains. A Y-autosome translocation linking the dominant wild-type allele of white pupae gene and a free autosome carrying a recessive white pupae homologue from the Salaya1 strain were introgressed into the gene pool of B. carambolae. A panel of Y-pseudo-linked microsatellite loci of the Salaya1 strain served as markers for the introgression experiments. This resulted in a newly derived genetic sexing strain called Salaya5, with morphological characteristics corresponding to B. carambolae. The rectal gland pheromone profile of Salaya5 males also contained a distinctive component of B. carambolae. Microsatellite DNA analyses confirmed the close genetic relationships between the Salaya5 strain and wild B. carambolae populations. Further experiments showed that the sterile males of Salaya5 can compete with wild males for mating with wild females in field cage conditions.

Conclusions

Introgression of sex sorting components from the Salaya1 strain to a closely related B. carambolae strain generated a new genetic sexing strain, Salaya5. Morphology-based taxonomic characteristics, distinctive pheromone components, microsatellite DNA markers, genetic relationships, and mating competitiveness provided parental baseline data and validation tools for the new strain. The Salaya5 strain shows a close similarity with those features in the wild B. carambolae strain. In addition, mating competitiveness tests suggested that Salaya5 has a potential to be used in B. carambolae SIT programs based on male-only releases.
