The prevalence and chronology of enamel hypoplasias were studied in a hominid dental sample from the Sima de los Huesos (SH) Middle Pleistocene site at the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, northern Spain). A total of 89 permanent maxillary teeth, 143 permanent mandibular teeth, and one deciduous lower canine, belonging to a minimum of 29 individuals, were examined. Excluding the antimeres (16 maxillary and 37 mandibular cases) from the sample, the prevalence of hypoplasias in the permanent dentition is 12.8% (23/179), whereas the deciduous tooth also showed an enamel defect. No statistically significant differences were found between both arcades and between the anterior and postcanine teeth for the prevalence of hypoplasias. In both the maxilla and the mandible the highest frequency of enamel hypoplasias was recorded in the canines. Only one tooth (a permanent upper canine) showed two different enamel defects, and most of the hypoplasias were expressed as faint linear horizontal defects. Taking into account the limitations that the incompleteness of virtually all permanent dentitions imposes, we have estimated that the frequency by individual in the SH hominid sample was not greater than 40%. Most of the hypoplasias occurred between birth and 7 years (N = 18, X = 3.5, SD = 1.3). Both the prevalence and severity of the hypoplasias of the SH hominid sample are significantly less than those of a large Neandertal sample. Furthermore, prehistoric hunter-gatherers and historic agricultural and industrial populations exhibit a prevalence of hypoplasias generally higher than that of the SH hominids. Implications for the survival strategies and life quality of the SH hominids are also discussed. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We dissected the forearms and hands of a female chimpanzee and systematically recorded mass, fiber length, and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) of all muscles including those of intrinsic muscles that have not been reported previously. The consistency of our measurements was confirmed by comparison with the published data on chimpanzees. Comparisons of the hand musculature of the measured chimpanzee with corresponding published human data indicated that the chimpanzee has relatively larger forearm flexors but smaller thenar eminence muscles, as observed in previous studies. The interosseous muscles were also confirmed to be relatively larger in the chimpanzee. However, a new finding was that relative PCSA, which reflects a muscles capacity to generate force, might have increased slightly in humans as a result of relatively shorter muscle fiber length. This suggests that the human intrinsic muscle architecture is relatively more adapted to dexterous manipulative functions. Shortening of the metacarpals and the intervening interosseous muscles might accordingly be a prerequisite for the evolution of human precision-grip capabilities.  相似文献

We investigated the taste responses to fructose and tannic acid compounds among 6 western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) at the San Francisco Zoo. We presented the subjects with 12 reference concentrations of 3–300 mM fructose, paired with tap water in paired-choice experimental trials. We subsequently presented them with tap water paired with 8 dilute concentrations of tannic acid (0.25–6 mM) dissolved in 100 mM fructose solutions and 8 concentrations (0.25–6 mM) dissolved in 300 mM fructose solutions. The gorillas exhibited a broadly similar preference threshold for fructose (50 mM) to those of other nonhuman primate and human samples. The gorillas tolerated moderate levels of tanninc acid, especially when presented in a very sweet package. The depressing effect of tannic acid on the ingestion of fructose solutions appeared to increase progressively with tannin concentration and was lower as fructose concentration increased. The inhibition threshold for tannic acid solutions was reached at 4 mM tannic acid in 100 mM fructose solution, and at 6 mM tannic acid in 300 mM fructose solutions. These results suggest that gorillas use sweetness as a criterion for food selection and regard those with moderate levels of tannins as palatable. Our findings corroberate food preference studies and nutritional analyses of wild gorilla foods indicating that they prefer sugary foods and readily consume ones containing moderate levels of tannins. Taste responses may facilitate a flexible frugivorous/folivorous diet among gorillas.  相似文献

Hypoplastic defects of tooth enamel and Harris lines in the long bones have been heralded as potentially useful indicators of health conditions in prehistoric populations. Both result from temporary cessation of growth processes due to similar types of disease, malnutrition, or other metabolic insult. An association test for the first six years of life was conducted on a large series of prehistoric California Indians, using femora and canines from young adults. No significant association was found. This is ascribable to differences in etiology and stability.  相似文献

Analyses of dental function are an essential component of the study of human evolution. However, with few exceptions, they have utilized the traditional analogizing method of comparative anatomy, and have assumed rather than demonstrated that proposed adaptive characters confer a performance benefit. Since food reduction is a mechanical process, it is appropriate to measure performance using mechanical parameters, specifically the ability of a given morphology to induce failure in food particle by either of the two major regimes: crush and shear, corresponding to simple stresses (tensile and compressive) and shear stress, respectively. We apply finite elements stress analysis to model the relationship between the angulation of the intercuspal occlusal surfaces in a “puncture crushing” mode of mastication. On the basis of morphological data acquired from sectioned great ape molars, we have predicted the nature, magnitude and distribution of stress in a standard food particle by models representing each morphotype. Results indicate that the blunt-cusped molars ofHomo, the gradually-sloping supporting (buccal) cusps but high-angled guiding (lingual) cusps of the lower molars ofPan, and the high angled occlusal surfaces ofGorillaare all more likely to fracture small food particles by shear, while the gradually sloping occlusal surfaces ofPongomolars are more likely to break them down by “crush”. Mechanisms of food failure induced by molars ofPanandHomowill vary according to the orientation of the tooth–food contacting surfaces, which in turn will vary according to the size of the food particle. These genera may be able to break food down either by shear or by “crush”.  相似文献

Two hundred black and white adult human skeletons and 200 living black and white children from the greater Cleveland area were examined for evidence of enamel hypoplasia. Enamel hypoplasia, present in varying expressings (pits, lines and grooves), was found to be more prevalent in both skeletal samples, than in the living groups. In the majority of cases, sex differences between white and black males and females through time and space are highly significant for all tooth catagories. Regardless of the mechanisms behind it, prevalence of enamel hypoplasia for both white and black group has significantly declined through time. No evidence suggesting specific etiologies responsible for enamel hypoplasia can be found. In the majority of previously published reports, the etiology is still idiopathic. The reduction in the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia in the groups examined through time may be related to improved nutritional conditions and the elimination or decline of childhood diseases that have been implicated in this condition.  相似文献

This paper reports the results from a study of enamel hypoplasia in the deciduous dentition of free-living Liberian chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus). The entire study collection includes 280 specimens (278 skulls plus two unassociated mandibles), of which 70 are young enough to retain some decidous teeth. Among the subsample of infants, the total frequency of hypoplasia summed over all teeth in any individual reaches 80%, being expressed in the form of pits rather than transverse lines. Hypoplasia of a linear form was common in the permanent dentition, attaining a frequency of 46.7% on maxillary central incisors and 69.7% on mandibular canines.  相似文献

Data on foods consumed by gorillas and chimpanzees living in primary forest in Gabon were collected, mainly by examination of the contents of feces. Gorillas ate fruit very regularly (some fruit remains were present in 97.6% of 246 fecal samples examined), in addition to leaves, stems, pith, and bark. Some fruit remains were present in all chimpanzee fecal samples examined. Mean numbers of fruit species per fecal sample were 2.5 for gorillas and 2.1 for chimpanzees. Sixty percent of all identified foods recorded for gorillas were recorded for chimpanzees as well. Our results indicate that important differences in diet exist between western lowland gorillas and the eastern gorilla populations of Kahuzi-Biega and the Virunga Volcanoes. It is now clear that western gorillas cannot be accurately classed as folivores.  相似文献

The external morphology of a fragmentary right proximal femur from southwestern Uganda is described here. Discovered in the Kikorongo Crater of Queen Elizabeth National Park in 1961, this specimen was informally assigned to Homo sapiens (although never described) and tentatively dated to the late Pleistocene. However, because aspects of the external morphology of the femur align the fossil with the African great apes, we suggest that the Kikorongo femur may be the first postcranial fossil of the genus Pan. Like the African apes, the Kikorongo specimen lacks both an obturator externus groove and an intertrochanteric line. It has a short femoral neck with a circular cross section, and a narrow and deep superior notch. Using resampling statistics and discriminant function analysis, the Kikorongo femur clustered with the genus Pan, as opposed to Gorilla or Homo. However, if the specimen is from Pan, it would be large for this taxon. Furthermore, features that clearly distinguish the external morphology of Plio-Pleistocene hominin proximal femora from African ape femora, such as the shape of the femoral neck in cross section and femoral neck length, have converged in Holocene humans and African apes. Unfortunately, the internal morphology of the femoral neck of the Kikorongo fossil was not discernable. Although we hypothesize that the Kikorongo femur is from the genus Pan, there is such variability in the proximal femora of modern humans that, although it would be an unusual human, it remains possible that this fossil represents H. sapiens.  相似文献

A sample representing a population of the Florence district of middle 19th century was studied to determine the age of occurrence of enamel hypoplasias. The age interval most affected was that between 1.5 and 3.5 years. Historical sources on weaning habits of 19th-century Italian populations indicate a weaning period between 12 and 18 months. This is in agreement with the data on enamel defects, showing that children of post-weaning age are more subject to stress. Wide “grooves”, with prolonged duration, are concentrated between 2 and 2.5 years, whereas “lines” occur primarily between 2.5 and 3 years. We suggest that this distribution could reflect the gradual introduction of dietary supplements until weaning is complete. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A ground section was prepared from a lower right M3 attributed to Gigantopithecus blacki as close as possible to axial plane of the mesial cusps. Daily cross striations were imaged, measured and counted in each cusp using polarised light microscopy. Long-period striae of Retzius were counted in the lateral enamel and their periodicity determined from counts and measurements of daily cross striations between adjacent striae. Cross striation spacings in the cusps were between 3.8 microm at the enamel dentine junction and 6 microm close to the enamel surface. Cuspal enamel formation times were long (800 days in the protoconid and 620 days in the metaconid). Linear enamel thickness was as much as 3.75 mm in the protoconid. There were 63 and 61 long-period striae of Retzius in the mesial aspects of the lateral enamel and the periodicity was 11 days. Lateral enamel formation took 1493 and 1291 days and when summed with cuspal enamel formation times totalled 4 years in the protoconid and 3.5 in the metaconid. Relative enamel thickness was 23, calculated through the mesial cusps. This falls short of that in the so-called 'thick hyper-thick' enamel described in 'robust' australopithecines to which Gigantopithecus blacki has previously been compared in both its dental and mandibular morphology. With respect to enamel thickness, therefore, Gigantopithecus blacki falls squarely among an increasingly large number of Miocene hominoids that can all be described as having 'thick enamel'.  相似文献

Variation in enamel microhistology (the schmelzmuster) and other features were examined in adult Ogmodontomys poaphagus molars from the Meade Basin of southwestern Kansas. Measurements of total enamel thickness and thickness of tangential enamel were taken on individual triangles of first upper molar samples from the superposed Ripley B, Hornet and Rexroad 2A local faunas. Although thickness of total enamel layers and the tangential zone were not statistically different between triangles and sites, the quality of tangential enamel on the trailing edges increased, from incipient tangential and well-developed tangential enamel (Ripley B and Hornet) to solely well-developed tangential enamel (Rexroad 2A). The fundamental schmelzmuster of O. poaphagus is radial enamel on the leading edges and radial plus incipient or well-developed tangential enamel on the trailing edges. These results support the assertion that the schmelzmuster is a consistent and genetically controlled character mosaic, and confirm suggestions in the literature that Ogmodontomys is distinct from Mimomys. Paired sample Student’s t-tests of trailing/leading edge samples for each triangle were used to test for differentiation. Although the molars of Ogmodontomys poaphagus appear undifferentiated under the light microscope, and are indeed separable from the distinctly negatively differentiated molars of Mimomys by this technique, our results show that the M1s of O. poaphagus are slightly negatively differentiated, with various triangles being either undifferentiated or negatively differentiated. O. sawrockensis has a more primitive schmelzmuster than O. poaphagus, and the presence of discrete (primitive) lamellar enamel on the apices of at least one triangle in 55% of the sample from Fallen Angel B, combined with the absence of lamellar enamel in molars of O. poaphagus from Fox Canyon and all subsequent Ogmodontomys samples, conclusively demonstrates that the Fallen Angel B population of O. sawrockensis was not ancestral to O. poaphagus in the Meade Basin. A unique mosaic of dental and size features indicates that the early Blancan O. pipecreekensis from Indiana is a sister species to O. sawrockensis and not ancestral to O. poaphagus.  相似文献

In bone-eating carnivores such as the hyena Crocuta crocuta, the tooth enamel contains a secondary vertical prism decussation phyletically derived from the wavelike horizontal decussation of primitive carnivores. The structure resists fracture under vertical, oblique, and horizontal tensile stresses, owing to the following modifications of the primitive structure. Positions of wave crests and of wave troughs are synchronized in the vertically successive layers of decussating prisms. Prisms in each successive layer run in a common direction at the crests and in a common but reversed direction at the troughs. Between the crests and troughs, prisms in obliquely slanting layers often retain their primitively reversed prism directions. Near the enamel–dentine junction (EDJ), irregular horizontal decussation is retained. In the upper canine of C. crocuta, a consumer of large bones, secondary vertical decussation is largely confined to the labial and anterior sides of the crown toward the tip where modeling of the static stresses predicts the tensile stresses to be highest and aligned vertically. In Puma concolor, which does not consume large bones, secondary vertical decussation is absent, indicating stress magnitude to be a critical factor in the selection for secondary vertical decussation. The canine enamel in Borophagus secundus, an extinct canid with derived aspects of skull and dental shape like those in hyenas, has dental structures similar to those in C. crocuta but which differ in several ways. The wavelike shapes of the decussation planes are better developed in transverse sections in B. secundus than in C. crocuta, suggesting either the folds are less modified or they dip at a steeper angle. Secondary vertical decussation in B. secundus is more extensive around the circumference of the canine than in C. crocuta, related to a difference in cross-sectional shape of the tooth. Vertical prism decussation may have been more frequently attained in carnivorous mammals than in ungulates because of the more random orientation of dental stresses which creates a selective advantage for wavy decussation planes—a structural transition to vertical decussation.  相似文献

Although molecular-based phylogenetic studies of hosts and parasites are increasingly common in the literature, no study to date has examined two congeneric lineages of parasites that live in sympatry on the same lineage of hosts. This study examines phylogenetic relationships among chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) of the Geomydoecus coronadoi and Geomydoecus mexicanus species complexes and compares these to phylogenetic patterns in their hosts (pocket gophers of the rodent family Geomyidae). Sympatry of congeneric lice provides a natural experiment to test the hypothesis that closely related lineages of parasites will respond similarly to the same host. Sequence data from the mitochondrial COI and the nuclear EF-1alpha genes confirm that the two louse complexes are reciprocally monophyletic and that individual clades within each species complex parasitize a different species of pocket gopher. Phylogenetic comparisons reveal that both louse complexes show a significant pattern of cophylogeny with their hosts. Comparisons of rates of nucleotide substitution at 4-fold degenerate sites in the COI gene indicate that both groups of lice have significantly higher basal mutation rates than their hosts. The two groups of lice have similar basal rates of mutation, but lice of the G. coronadoi complex show significantly elevated rates of nucleotide substitution at all sites. These rate differences are hypothesized to result from population-level phenomena, such as effective population size, founder effects, and drift, that influence rates of nucleotide substitution.  相似文献

Our study extends quantitative analyses of insect-eating by gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) to Cameroon. During a 2-mo period (May–June 2001), we recorded and analyzed feeding traces on plants and insects and in gorilla feces. We found 180 feeding traces, 17% of which involved insectivory. Seventy-eight percent of the fecal samples (n = 36) contained insects. Ants were found in 61% of the samples, termites in 39%, while 56% of the samples contained remains of other insects. We added 14 new species to the known insect diet of western lowland gorillas. Overall, social insects are predominant. The choice of prey by the Ntonga gorillas gives new clues for the existence of cross-cultural differences among gorilla populations. A comparison of the overall frequency of insectivory with those at other sites in Central Africa indicate a possible effect of forest disturbance on the insectivorous behavior of gorillas. The study suggests the existence of temporal variation in ant- and termite-eating by gorillas.  相似文献

Comparison of the complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of the high-Arctic ringed seal (Phoca hispida) and the sub-Arctic harbour (P. vitulina) and grey (Halichoerus grypus) seals shows that they are genetically equidistant from one another. We relate the evolutionary divergence of the three species to expanding glaciation in the Arctic Basin and establish, in conjunction with mtDNA data, a standard reference for calibration of recent divergence events among mammalian taxa. In the present study, we apply the “Phoca standard” to the dating of divergences within the hominid phylogenetic tree. After determining the relative rates of substitution over all mitochondrial protein-coding genes in the different evolutionary lineages, we estimate that humans and chimpanzees diverged from each other 6.1 Mya (95% confidence limits: 5.2–6.9 Mya). The corresponding lower-limit divergence between common chimpanzee,Pan troglodytes, and pygmy chimpanzee,P. paniscus, occurred 3 (2.4–3.6) Mya, and the primary split within theP. troglodytes complex 1.6 (1.3–2.0) Mya. The analyses suggest that the split betweenGorilla andPan/Homo occurred 8.4 (7.3–9.4) Mya. They also suggest thatPongo (orangutan) and the lineage leading to gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans diverged 18.1 (16.5–19.6) Mya. The present analysis is independent of the hominid paleontological record and inferential morphological interpretations and thus is a novel approach to the lower-limit dating of recent divergences. Repetitive linear enamel hypoplasia (rLEH) is often observed in recent large-bodied apes from Africa and Asia as well as Mid- to Late Miocene sites from Spain to China. The ubiquity and periodicity of rLEH are not understood. Its potential as an ontogenetic marker of developmental stress in threatened species (as well as their ancient relatives) makes rLEH an important if enigmatic problem. We report research designed to show the periodicity of rLEH among West African Pan troglodytes (12 male, 32 female), Gorilla gorilla (10 male, 10 female), and Bornean and Sumatran Pongo pygmaeus (11 male, 9 female, 9 unknown) from collections in Europe. Two methods were employed. In the common chimpanzees and gorillas, the space between adjacent, macroscopically visible LEH grooves on teeth with two or more episodes was expressed as an absolute measure and as a ratio of complete unworn crown height. In the orangutans, the number of perikymata between episode onsets, as well as duration of rLEH, was determined from scanning electron micrographs of casts of incisors and canines. We conclude that stress in the form of LEH commences as early as 2.5 years of age in all taxa and lasts for several years, and even longer in orangutans; the stress is not chronic but episodic; the stressor has a strong tendency to occur in pulses of two occurrences each; and large apes from both land masses exhibit rLEH with an average periodicity of 6 months (or multiples thereof; Sumatran orangutans seem to show only annual stress), but this needs further research. This is supported by evidence of spacing between rLEH as well as perikymata counts. Duration of stress in orangutans averages about 6 weeks. Finally, the semiannual stressor transcends geographic and temporal boundaries, and is attributed to regular moisture cycles associated with the intertropical convergence zone modified by the monsoon. While seasonal cycles can influence both disease and nutritional stress, it is likely the combination of seasonal variation in fruiting cycles with specific stressors (malaria and/or intestinal parasites, especially hookworm) that results in this widespread phenomenon. This seasonal stress is sufficiently common and of long duration (6 weeks on average in orangutans) that we think rLEH may reflect significant stress in recent and, inferentially, fossil apes. Increasing seasonality may have impinged negatively on later Miocene apes, especially if they lacked a clear birth peak or seasonality in their reproductive cycles.  相似文献

Brief results of a survey are reported for the primate fauna in south-eastern Cameroon and northern Congo. The survey was carried over the period from October 1988 to January 1989. I confirmed the occurrence ofMandrillus sphinx in the south-eastern part of Cameroon, viz. the south bank of the Dja river, the occurrence ofCercocebus albigena in almost all the survey areas, the occurrence ofCercopithecus cephus, C. nictitans, C. pogonias, andGorilla g. gorilla throughout the areas, and the occurrence ofCercopithecus neglectus andColobus badius near Bomassa, 70 km north of Ouesso, in Congo. I also confirmedColobus polykomos satanas in some parts of Cameroon, but this species is declining. Local people provided information onCercocebus galeritus agilis, Colobus guereza, andPan troglodytes in almost all the areas, in some of which I confirmed the animals directly. They also provided information aboutCercocebus torquatus on the north bank of the Dja river in Cameroon andMiopithecus talapoin in Sembe in Congo, although I could not confirm these species myself. Human activities had begun reducing the populations of the above primates, particularly those ofMandrillus sphinx, Colobus polykomos satanas, andGorilla g. gorilla, in south-eastern Cameroon and in northern Congo despite the low density of the human populations.  相似文献

An additional method for the investigation of the microstructure of enamel is described using the teeth of Coryphodon, Uintatherium, Entelodon, and Crocuta. Under low magnification natural surfaces or sections of teeth display details of the enamel microstructure when the light guide effect of prisms is used. Under the same low magnification even more details were obtained from sputter-coated surfaces of sections. The method is of particular significance for the investigation of large teeth with thick enamels when structures are somewhat irregular. The new method provides a better general survey, where scanning electron microscope images often show confusing details. The enamel of Coryphodon shows oblique lines of nested chevrons that are similar, to some degree, to the zigzag enamel in Crocuta, but a distinct asymmetry between ascending and descending lineaments was observed. This specific Coryphodon -enamel was also found in Uintatherium and Entelodon. This enamel type, which evolved several times in parallel, cannot be attributed to a specific diet, but must be regarded as one of the several ways to strengthen the enamel against breakage.  相似文献
