The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of traditional resistance training equipment in the measurement of muscular power. This was accomplished by measuring the velocity of movement through a measured distance during maximal effort lifts using a Smith rack. The reliability of the method was established using 10 male volunteers who performed both bench press and squat exercises in a Smith rack. Maximal power output was determined at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% of the subject's 1 repetition maximum (1RM). Test-retest power values were not statistically different. Another 15 male volunteers who had previous muscle biopsy data from the vastus lateralis muscle performed the same maximal power output evaluation. There were no significant relationships between peak power outputs and fiber-type expressions when linear regressions were performed. The power curve produced by graphing power output vs. the percentage of 1RM indicates that peak power output occurs between 50 and 70% of 1RM for the squat and between 40 and 60% of 1RM for the bench press. These data indicate that this method of evaluation of muscle power is reliable, although it is not predictive of muscle fiber-type percentages. 相似文献

While different studies showed that better fitness level adds to the efficiency of the thermoregulatory system, the relationship between muscular effort and skin temperature is still unknown. Therefore, the present study assessed the relationship between neuromuscular activation and skin temperature during cycle exercise. Ten physically active participants performed an incremental workload cycling test to exhaustion while neuromuscular activations were recorded (via surface electromyography – EMG) from rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius medialis. Thermographic images were recorded before, immediately after and 10 min after finishing the cycling test, at four body regions of interest corresponding to the muscles where neuromuscular activations were monitored. Frequency band analysis was conducted to assess spectral properties of EMG signals in order to infer on priority in recruitment of motor units. Significant inverse relationship between changes in skin temperature and changes in overall neuromuscular activation for vastus lateralis was observed (r<−0.5 and p<0.04). Significant positive relationship was observed between skin temperature and low frequency components of neuromuscular activation from vastus lateralis (r>0.7 and p<0.01). Participants with larger overall activation and reduced low frequency component for vastus lateralis activation presented a better adaptive response of their thermoregulatory system by showing fewer changes in skin temperature after incremental cycling test. 相似文献

To investigate the relationships between race performance and parameters at the optimal power output for lactate removal, 10 male triathletes were examined. Exercise intensities for lactate removal were defined by calculating 50% of difference (DeltaT) between running velocity (V(r)) at individual anaerobic threshold (IAT) and at individual ventilatory threshold (IVT), then choosing 3 V(r): at IVT plus 50% DeltaT (IVT(+50%DeltaT)), at IVT, and at IVT minus 50% DeltaT (IVT(-50%DeltaT)). After a 6-minute treadmill run at 75% of difference between IAT and V(.-)O2max, all triathletes performed a 30-minute active recovery run at IVT(+50%DeltaT), IVT, and IVT(-50%DeltaT). Capillary blood lactate was determined at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes of recovery. The IVT(-50%DeltaT) recovery was the most efficient V(r) for lactate removal. Running velocities at IVT and IVT(-50%DeltaT) were highly (p < 0.01) related to cycle, run, and overall race time. V(.-)O2max values at IAT, IVT(+50%DeltaT), and IVT were less (p < 0.05) related to split and overall race time. The variable most related to overall race time, as determined by stepwise multiple linear regression analysis, was the V(r) at IVT(-50%DeltaT) (r = 0.87, p = 0.001). The R(2) value of 0.76 indicated that V(r) at IVT(-50%DeltaT) could account for 76% of the variance in triathlon race time. This study shows that the race performances of triathletes are highly related to the V(r) at which the most efficient lactate removal (IVT(-50%DeltaT)) occurs. These findings suggest that the assessment of V(r) at IVT and IAT (from which V(r) at IVT(-50%DeltaT) are calculated) may be a useful method for monitoring training-induced adaptations and performance improvements in athletes who participate in Olympic triathlons. 相似文献

Contraction work (CW) was recorded for each of 200 repetitive isokinetic plantar flexions (1.05 rad.s-1) and knee extensions (1.57 rad.s-1) in 14 elite male orienteers. Simultaneous recordings of integrated electromyograms (iEMG) were obtained from the 3 parts of triceps surae and from 3 superficial portions of quadriceps femoris. CW in both muscle groups decreased significantly during the first 30 contractions (the fatigue phase), followed by a steady state level. The relative steady state level was higher for the plantar flexors (70 +/- 17%) than for the knee extensors (56 +/- 12%). For quadriceps a significant increase in iEMG occurred during the first 10 contractions followed by a decrease, whereas the iEMG of the plantar flexors showed a gradual decrease to the steady state level, which was similar for the two muscle groups (71-72%). The chosen expression of output/input balance (CW/iEMG) was constant throughout the plantarflexion test but decreased during the initial 20 knee extensions down to 82%. Thus, the fatigue phase of the knee extensions appeared to be divided into two; the first part had decreases in both CW and CW/iEMG and the second part with a decrease in CW alone. In contrast the plantar flexors only showed the characteristics of the second part. 相似文献

To demonstrate the most satisfactory way of using electrical activities of respiratory nerves and muscles, activities of phrenic nerve and external intercostal muscle (ICM) and the airway pressure changes generated by respiratory muscle contraction were recorded in anesthetized cats during complete airway occlusion. Electrical activities were rectified, integrated and processed in terms of peak and average inspiratory rates per 0.1 s and of total activity per breath. Peak rate of phrenic nerve activity exhibited a high linear correlation (r = 0.974) with peak inspiratory pressure. Average phrenic rate showed a similar high correlation (r = 0.973). Peak rate of external ICM was linearly related to peak pressure but the correlation was less good (r = 0.915). Total phrenic activity per breath was too dependent upon inspiratory duration to be a satisfactory correlate (r = 0.674). In this experiment occlusion pressure was an index of muscle force generation and respiratory control system output. It is concluded that peak or average rates of phrenic activity provide an electrical index of output changes. On theoretical grounds, peak rate is probably better. 相似文献

Values of oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, ventilation and blood lactate concentration were determined in eight active male subjects during the minute following submaximal square-wave exercise on a treadmill under two sets of conditions. Square-wave exercise was (1) integrated in a series of intermittent incremental exercises of 4-min duration separated by 1-min rest periods; (2) isolated, of 4- and 12-min duration, and of intensity corresponding to each of the intermittent incremental periods of exercise. For square-wave exercise of the same duration (4 min) and intensity, no significant differences in the above-mentioned parameters were noted between intermittent incremental exercise and isolated exercise. Only at high work rate (greater than 92% maximal oxygen uptake), were blood lactate levels in three subjects slightly higher after 12-min of isolated exercise than after the 4-min periods of isolated exercise. Examination of these results suggests that (1) 80-90% of the blood lactate concentration observed under our experimental conditions results from the accumulation of lactate in the blood during the period of oxygen deficit; (2) therefore the blood lactate concentration/exercise intensity relationship, for the most part, appears to represent the lactate accumulated early in the periods of intermittent incremental exercise. 相似文献

Summary Lactate concentration was measured in the abdominal muscle of the shrimpPalaemon serratus. Rapid and seasonal temperature changes result in an increase of the lactate content of approximately 3–4 fold.Lactate dehydrogenase from the abdominal muscle exhibits a temperature dependent pyruvate inhibition with pyruvate as substrate. The kinetic parameters of lactate dehydrogenase fromPalaemon serratus are found to vary during rapid temperature changes: Vmax increases with temperature from 0.06 mol min–1 (mg protein)–1 at 10°C to 0.28 mol min–1 (mg protein)–1 at 30°C with lactate as substrate, and from 5.5 mol min–1 (mg protein)–1 at 10°C to 26.2 mol min–1 (mg protein)–1 at 30°C, with pyruvate (Table 1). The Hill coefficientn
H, decreases with temperature from 2.2 to 1.2 when the pyruvate reduction is examined, but remains near 1.2 when the activity is measured with lactate as substrate (Table 1). The S0.5 values for lactate show a tendency to increase below 30 °C (18.9 mM l–1 at 20 °C) whereas the S0.5 for pyruvate is found to increase greatly with temperature (0.004 mM l–1 at 10 °C and 0.06 mM l–1 at 20 °C).Long term temperature changes involve variations of lactate dehydrogenase activity leading to inverse thermal compensation (Table 2).Activation energy (about 56 kJ both with pyruvate and lactate) does not vary during the year, suggesting that temperature adaptation does not induce important catalytic changes (Table 3).Abbreviation LDH

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether excessive CO2 output (VCO2excess) is dominantly attributable to hyperventilation during the period of recovery from repeated cycling sprints. A series of four 10-sec cycling sprints with 30-sec passive recovery periods was performed two times. The first series and second series of cycle sprints (SCS) were followed by 360-sec passive recovery periods (first recovery and second recovery). Increases in blood lactate (DeltaLa) were 11.17+/-2.57 mM from rest to 5.5 min during first recovery and 2.07+/-1.23 mM from the start of the second SCS to 5.5 min during second recovery. CO2 output (VCO2) was significantly higher than O2 uptake (VO2) during both recovery periods. This difference was defined as VCO2excess. VCO2excess was significantly higher during first recovery than during second recovery. VCO2excess was added from rest to the end of first recovery and from the start of the second SCS to the end of second recovery (CO2excess). DeltaLa was significantly related to CO2excess (r=0.845). However, ventilation during first recovery was the same as that during second recovery. End-tidal CO2 pressure (PETCO2) significantly decreased from the resting level during the recovery periods, indicating hyperventilation. PETCO2 during first recovery was significantly higher than that during second recovery. It is concluded that VCO2excess is not simply determined by ventilation during recovery from repeated cycle sprints. 相似文献

Although progressive resistance training of trunk muscles on devices is very common, today, the effects of increasing resistance on trunk muscle activity during dynamic extension and flexion movements on training devices have not been reported yet. Thirty healthy subjects participated in maximal isometric and submaximal dynamic (at 30%, 50% and 70% of maximum mean torque (MMT)) extension and flexion exercises on Tergumed lumbar training devices. The normalized (as a percentage of maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC)) electromyographic activity of 16 abdominal and back muscles was investigated. The results of the present study indicated that in general, with increasing resistance from 30% MMT to 50% MMT and 70% MMT, the activity of all back muscles during the extension exercises and the activity of all abdominal muscles during the flexion exercises increased significantly. To train strength (>60% of MVIC), low intensities (30% and 50% MMT) appeared sufficient to affect the back muscles, but for the abdominals higher resistance (70% MMT) was required. In contrast to the other back muscles, the lumbar multifidus demonstrated high activity levels during both the extension and the flexion exercises. As the lumbar multifidus is demonstrated to be an important muscle in segmental stabilization of the lumbar spine, this finding may help in understanding the efficacy of rehabilitation programs using specific training devices. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between spontaneously chosen crank rate (SCCR) and power output during two upper body exercise tests: firstly, an incremental maximal aerobic power test (T1), with an initial intensity of 50 W followed by 15-W increases at each subsequent 90-s stage and secondly, a test (T2) with consecutive exercise periods set at 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 110% and 120% of maximal power (Pmax) separated by passive recovery periods. Eight nationally and internationally ranked kayakers, aged 20 (SD 2) years, performed the tests. During both T1 and T2, mean SCCR values were correlated (r = 1) and increased significantly (P < 0.05) in association with the increases in power output. The finding that the subjects consistently increased their crank rate as the power output increased in different tests, i.e. at submaximal, maximal and supramaximal intensities, strongly suggests that SCCR depended on power output and not on the type of exercise (incremental or rectangular exercise). Moreover, the equation relating crank rate and power output determined from T1 suggests that it may be used to predict the crank rate which will be chosen in upper body exercise, whatever the intensity. Finally, the results of testing at 110% and 120% of Pmax would suggest that a high crank rate (>90 rpm) should be used during the test procedure using supramaximal exercises where accumulated oxygen deficit is calculated, and more particularly when exercise is performed using the upper body. 相似文献

The belief that high-carbohydrate diets enhance training capacity (mean power output) has been extrapolated from studies that have varied dietary carbohydrate over a few days and measured muscle glycogen but did not assess power output during training. We hypothesized that a high-carbohydrate (HI) diet (10 g.kg body mass-1.day-1) would promote greater muscle glycogen content and greater mean power output during training than a moderate-carbohydrate (MOD) diet (5 g.kg body mass-1.day-1) over 4 wk of intense twice-daily rowing training. Dietary protein intake was 2 g.kg body mass-1.day-1, and fat intake was adjusted to maintain body mass. Twelve male and 10 female collegiate rowers were randomly assigned to the treatment groups. Training was 40 min at 70% peak O2 consumption (VO2) (A.M.) and either three 2,500-m time trials to assess power output or interval training at 70-90% peak VO2 (P.M.). Mean daily training was 65 min at 70% peak VO2 and 38 min at greater than or equal to 90% peak VO2. Mean muscle glycogen content increased 65% in the HI group (P less than 0.05) but remained constant at 119 mmol/kg in the MOD group over the 4 wk. Mean power output in time trials increased 10.7 and 1.6% after 4 wk in the HI and MOD groups, respectively (P less than 0.05). We conclude that a diet with 10 g carbohydrate.kg body mass-1.day-1 promotes greater muscle glycogen content and greater power output during training than a diet containing 5 g carbohydrate.kg body mass-1.day-1 over 4 wk of intense twice-daily rowing training.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to compare trunk muscle activity during stability ball and free weight exercises. Nine resistance-trained men participated in one testing session in which squats (SQ) and deadlifts (DL) were completed with loads of approximately 50, 70, 90, and 100% of one-repetition maximum (1RM). Isometric contractions during 3 stability ball exercises (quadruped (QP), pelvic thrust (PT), ball back extension (BE)) were also completed. During all exercises, average integrated electromyography (IEMG) from the rectus abdominus (RA), external oblique (EO), longissimus (L1) and multifidus (L5) was collected and analyzed. Results demonstrate that when expressed relative to 100% DL 1RM, muscle activity was 19.5 +/- 14.8% for L1 and 30.2 +/- 19.3% for L5 during QP, 31.4 +/- 13.4% for L1 and 37.6 +/- 12.4% for L5 during PT, and 44.2 +/- 22.8% for L1 and 45.5 +/- 21.6% for L5 during BE. IEMG of L1 during SQ and DL at 90 and 100% 1RM, and relative muscle activity of L5 during SQ and DL at 100% 1RM was significantly greater (P < or = 0.05) than in the stability ball exercises. Furthermore, relative muscle activity of L1 during DL at 50 and 70% 1RM was significantly greater than in QP and PT. No significant differences were observed in RA and EO during any of the exercises. In conclusion, activity of the trunk muscles during SQs and DLs is greater or equal to that which is produced during the stability ball exercises. It appears that stability ball exercises may not provide a sufficient stimulus for increasing muscular strength or hypertrophy; consequently, the role of stability ball exercises in strength and conditioning programs is questioned. SQs and DLs are recommended for increasing strength and hypertrophy of the back extensors. 相似文献

The purpose of the investigation was to estimate change of a thermal condition of an organism during exhausting work (maximal aerobic test) on cycle ergometer on the basis of studying of dynamics of temperature of a forehead skin. Regularly training 20 men have taken part in the research--sportsmen of various specializations (skiers, rock-climbers, boxers, etc.). Temperature of forehead skin was registered by infrared thermovision chamber Nec TH 9100SL. These results compared with the data of measurements of heart rate, gas exchange, the lactate concentration in peripheral blood, and also with anthropometrical characteristics. It was shown that on dynamics of skin temperature at maximal work load it was possible to divide all subjects into 2 unequal groups: 1 (2/3 subjects, the majority of which trains endurance) - after temperature decrease take place its smooth increase up to refusal ofwork; 2 (1/3 subjects, concerning various sports specializations)--from the moment of the beginning of active evaporation of sweat the temperature decreases to the work termination. In group 1 lactate threshold (lactate concentration in blood--4 mm/l) corresponds to the beginning of rise in temperature after its decrease as a result of sweat evaporation. In group 2 lactate threshold was necessary on a phase of decrease in temperature at the moment of active evaporation of sweat. Distinctions between groups in structure of correlation relationship between the measured indicators are revealed, inversion of a sign ofcorrelation quotient in some cases were shown. Thus significant distinctions between groups in the level of the working capacity indicators were not revealed. All it testifies to existence possibility at least two various successful strategy of urgent adaptation of system of thermoregulation to intense muscular work. 相似文献

The goal of the study was to evaluate the changes in the thermal state of the body during a maximal aerobic test on a bicycle ergometer on the basis of the dynamics of the skin temperature on the forehead. Twenty male athletes regularly training in various sports (skiers, rock-climbers, boxers, etc.) participated in our study. The forehead’s skin temperature was recorded using a NEC TH9100 Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera. These results were put together with the data on the heart rate, gas exchange, and lactate concentration in peripheral blood, as well as with anthropometrical parameters. It was shown that on the basis of the dynamics of the skin temperature at the maximal workload, the subjects could be divided into two groups of different sizes. In the first group (two-thirds of all subjects, most of the athletes of this group practiced endurance sports), after a temperature decrease, a smooth temperature increase took place until exhaustion. In the second group (one-third of all subjects, athletes of various sports specializations), from the beginning of active sweat evaporation, the temperature decreased until exhaustion. In the first group, the lactate threshold (a blood lactate concentration of 4 mmol/l) corresponded to the beginning of the increase in temperature after its decrease as a result of sweat evaporation. In the second group, the lactate threshold corresponded to the phase of the decrease in temperature during active sweat evaporation. The differences between the groups were expressed in the correlations of the measured parameters; in a number of cases, the inversions of the signs of correlation were found. At the same time, no significant differences in the parameters of working capacity were found between two groups. All these findings indicate the possibility of at least two successful strategies of urgent adaptation of the thermoregulatory system to intense muscular work. 相似文献

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the effect of unstable and unilateral resistance exercises on trunk muscle activation. Eleven subjects (6 men and 5 women) between 20 and 45 years of age participated. Six trunk exercises, as well as unilateral and bilateral shoulder and chest presses against resistance, were performed on stable (bench) and unstable (Swiss ball) bases. Electromyographic activity of the upper lumbar, lumbosacral erector spinae, and lower-abdominal muscles were monitored. Instability generated greater activation of the lower-abdominal stabilizer musculature (27.9%) with the trunk exercises and all trunk stabilizers (37.7-54.3%) with the chest press. There was no effect of instability on the shoulder press. Unilateral shoulder press produced greater activation of the back stabilizers, and unilateral chest press resulted in higher activation of all trunk stabilizers, when compared with bilateral presses. Regardless of stability, the superman exercise was the most effective trunk-stabilizer exercise for back-stabilizer activation, whereas the side bridge was the optimal exercise for lower-abdominal muscle activation. Thus, the most effective means for trunk strengthening should involve back or abdominal exercises with unstable bases. Furthermore, trunk strengthening can also occur when performing resistance exercises for the limbs, if the exercises are performed unilaterally. 相似文献

This study examined the relationship between the work rate at which blood lactate accumulation begins (lactate threshold) during running and relative gastrocnemius area in four different groups. Twenty nonathletic and 11 athletic boys (age 9-12 yr), 15 female adult runners, and 11 male nonathletic students participated in this study. The muscle composition of the leg and thigh were measured by ultrasound. The lactate threshold was assessed in terms of both the absolute work rate (ml.kg-1.min-1) and relative work rate. The relative cross-sectional area of the gastrocnemius to the plantar flexor (relative gastrocnemius area) was significantly negatively related to the absolute and relative lactate threshold in all groups. These results suggest that the relative gastrocnemius area may play an important role in determining the relative and absolute lactate threshold during running. 相似文献
